Dear Readers, It’s time to get serious with the political landscape and abolish the income tax. This is a nearly impossible task considering that both Republicans and Democrats are as corrupt and rotten to the core as they come. There has been a meme going around that states taxation is theft. I’ll go one better, taxation is extortion. The average AmeriKen Petty can family pays $13,758 in federal income taxes. This is enough money to buy a quality pre-owned car. This is enough money to pay tuition for one year at many in-state universities. This is enough money for a down-payment on a nice house. In short, the amount of money the average American family pays in income taxes is enough money to substantially improve their quality of living. Every dollar that the federal government takes from Americans every

year is a dollar they can’t use to make a better life for themselves and their families. Instead, it is used by politicians to benefit their special interest cronies. The best thing the government could do is to stop stealing money from hard-working people and that’s why I’m calling for a 100% tax

refund to every American...and then abolish the IRS and the Income Tax. I’d even go as far as repealing the 16th amendment and fully abolish even the thought of an income tax. You may ask, well, who will build the roads? This is a subject I will tackle in a future Letter Rip column.

Adam Schiff demanded he recuse himself for showing these documents to Trump before informing the House Intel Committee first. Forget the “content” again, investigate the leaking of them was the top Democrat’s focus. When FBI Director Comey and NSA Director Rogers testified the questions went clearly along party lines even after White House Counsel McGhan had shared the documents in question with Schiff and the Committee. But like the 3 Card Monte game, it was the GOP members asking about the leaking and unmasking of the names and not the content. Ex-National Security Advisor Susan Rice, who had previously denied any knowledge about the surveillance and the unmasking of Trump associates’ names, miraculously recalled everything about it when reported by Bloomberg’s Eli Lake and knew “for

a fact” that “none of it was ever done for political reasons”, less than 2 weeks later. These hearings are normally held privately, and the publicly broadcast hearings reminded me of the “crowd” who surrounded the “action” of the hustler on the NY City streets. Prepare for the prestidigitation to accelerate as each side attempts to confuse those who think they know a crime has occurred, but are quickly trying to get them to change the focus as fast as they can. Grab the popcorn folks, this is gonna be good! Just don’t let them pull the old ”Razzle-Dazzle” play and let those who were outraged by the leakers claim that the illegal leaking of classified information and private citizens’ names suddenly “disappear” like a hidden football.

Mural Celebrating a Local Legend to be Unveiled at Rising Stars & Legends of Texas Local artist Theresa Thornhill prepares mural honoring Conroe native, Pulitzer Prize-winner Annette Gordon-Reed CONROE, Texas – A new mural will be unveiled on one of downtown Conroe’s building exteriors as part of Rising Stars & Legends of Texas, a celebration of arts and culture in the Lone Star State, scheduled for April 21 and 22 in downtown Conroe. During the festive event, the Greater Conroe Arts Alliance will present art and artists from Conroe and around Texas for a fete of visual, performing, literary and cultural arts. Local artist Theresa Thornhill is creating the mural of Annette Gordon-Reed, a Conroe native who became a Pulitzer Prize winner, for the occasion. The piece will be installed on the Conroe Legends Mural Wall, located on the south side of 202 N. Main St., which features individuals from the area who have garnered statewide, national or international recognition for their professional efforts. Serving as the Charles Warren Professor of American Legal History at Harvard Law School, GordonReed also is a professor of history in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University. Before this post, she was the Harold Vyvyan Harmsworth Visiting Professor of American History at The Queen’s College, Oxford. Gordon-Reed won the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 for “The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family.” She also is the author of “Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy,” “Andrew Johnson” and most recently “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination.” Her honors include a fellowship from the Dorothy and Lewis B. Organization for Women in New York City. She also was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011 and is a member of the Academy’s Commission on the Humanities and Social Sciences. Thornhill has been immersed in research about Gordon-Reed in preparation of creating the mural. “She’s a Pulitzer Prize winner and a Conroe High School graduate,” Thornhill said. “She’s a big deal.” Thornhill has already completed three murals in Conroe – honoring Mary McCoy, Roy Harris and Colin Edwards II. For each project, the digital artist spends time reading about the person online, interviewing relatives and gathering all the information she can. “I incorporate elements of what I learn about the person into the mural,” Thornhill said. “There are usually images that stand out to me, things that jump out that I think would make a good story – and I put that into the piece. The impression I get will tell me what direction to go.” She is still working on the concept for the mural honoring GordonReed. “I have some ideas floating around, and I kind of know what I’m going to do,” she said. “But mark on the downtown landscape once I start playing, it could all with her art honoring hometown completely change.” Thornhill is originally from Beau- heroes. mont and moved to the Spring area Rising Stars & Legends of Texas kicks off at 6 p.m. on Friday, April in 1997. Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary Officially Opens Conroe, Texas – Henry’s Home Horse and Human Sanctuary officially opened its new facilities in Grand Central Park in Conroe, TX on Wednesday, furthering its mission to enhance the quality of life for horses and humans who have suffered trauma, known neglect or simply need a quiet place in nature with a loving family to heal from unseen wounds. The Leadership Montgomery County (LMC) Class of 2017 chose Henry’s Home as its class project where class members can apply their leadership skills while benefiting the community. The class divided the project into four primary components: · Strategic Support: Focused on helping Henry’s Home improve as an organization and created bylaws, strategic planning and developed a master site plan; · Capital Improvements: Dedicated to physical improvements to Henry’s Home, including renovation and the arena; · Marketing: Created mar-

keting collateral to support the requirements of fundraising, and developed the long term marketing strategy; · Fundraising: Supported the project fundraising needs while also providing a long-term fundraising plan. Judy Chance Duroy, member of the LMC Class of 2017, shared, “I had great hopes for LMC when I first submitted my application to join the class. My expectations have been surpassed by this amazing experience of coming together with other members of my community to have a common goal and work together to achieve it. Our project, Henry’s Home has forever impacted my life personally. Not only have I had the privilege to be a part of expanding the mission of Henry’s Home through LMC, but I also was able to join and be so kindly accepted into their Herdmate program, which was an added bonus! I will always be eternally grateful for LMC, my classmates, and Henry’s Home that provided me this incredible journey.”

Florescence Waves 2017 by Rosanne Friedman

Chagall holds his painting up to nature to find if the painting rings true, does it have the push and pull of the organic—is it wild enough? The Japanese say if nature is not cultivated it is not worthy. Unruly nature is random, not interesting, not true. The sense of humanity must be integrated with nature for nature to be meaningful. Tomas De Bruyne writes, “To work is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit, giving nature a voice and let her speak through your hands.” The general truth is that people love flowers. Research insists that flowers are good for one’s emotional health. My dear friend, Gwen speaks of flowers as God’s art work.

Every other year Art and Nature meet to combine, compete, and resonate at the MFAH in a national flower exhibit organized by The River Oaks Garden Club and The Houston Garden Club called Flo-

rescence: Waves 2017. It is the International Quilt Show of flowers and horticulture in Houston. Like the International Quilt Show, people come in from all over the United States and overseas. Tomas De Bruyne, superstar florist, is being flown in from Belgium to be the keynote speaker. This is an exciting time! Two intense days for viewing these competitive floral arrangements and floral arrangements that echo American and French paintings selected from the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Art Houston. Four dresses from the collection were chosen to inspire flower arrangements. The Beck building will be teaming with botanical art, horticulture, needlepoint, and photography April 25 and 26, 2017.

“If you think squash is competitive, you should try floral design.” — Alan Bennett Water is the special conservation exhibit intended to increase awareness in native plant choices to improve water quality and mitigating storm water flows. Such an important study, be sure to spend time here. Flowers reveal ideas as light and witty as hummingbirds’ wings, as well as the iron heavy hands of control to transform toward another idea. For decades artists have been using non-art materials to make art. Or as Brian Eno has said, art is anything that sets up aesthetic impulse for seeing, feeling and believing. Anything. Flowers even. Flowers especially. The wonder of looking at flowers with the awareness of the energy and intensity that goes into each display, each transformation is astounding. Knowing of the immediacy and transience of these floral exhibits as they resound with the colors and energy of the paintings brings new marvel to both. There is a depth to their possibilities that invites us to look and look again. The opulence is unequalled. Seeing is breathing, it is intoxicating.

JESSE RAE

THE SCOTTISH FUNK WARRIOR by Mark Crampton

PUBLIC NEWS

www.publicnewsonline.com

MARK’S MUSICAL MUSINGS

I first came across Jesse Rae’s 1985 ‘Over the Sea’ music video https://youtu.be/dOad0FU9zF8 about a year ago while researching another article. I thought the video was a hoot, mostly because of my extreme interest in all things Scottish, but had other involvements at that time, so I just passed it by. Later, I looked it up again, and eventually ordered directly from Jesse Rae a CD/DVD combo (a 2014 limited edition – only 1,000 pressed - re-release of 1984’s ‘The Thistle’, a compilation with the original album, 3 videos and 16 previously un-released tracks) from Amazon for my library.

Jesse is an interesting character, a purveyor of what he terms “Scots Parliament-Funkadelic music”, an extreme Scottish patriot, visionary video artist, musician, song writer, who has, since 1984, dressed in Great Kilt (Feileadh Mòr) and sporran, leather armor, feathered helmet and claymore sword (Claidheamh-Mòr). Unfortunately, Jesse is also a classic story of ‘Almost-Was’ or ‘Might-Have-Been’ – his career had so many possibilities, but just never made the big time! Almost a successful music video/film director, almost an inventor, almost a music star. Jesse first came to America from his native Scottish Lowlands in the ‘70s as the vocalist/bass player for the UK heavy metal band Granicus - they released one album ‘Granicus . . . plus’ in 1973 https://youtu.be/GV6WK2FZ4E. Working a day job at the NY Stock Exchange (and developing a keen talent for finances while doing so!), Jesse became heavily involved in the Funk music industry – more about that in a minute – bouncing around America

between studios in NYC, Boston, Cleveland and LA. The Funk style Jesse was interested and involved in is ‘Electro Funk’ – it forgoes traditional instruments for electronics, synthesizers, Vocoders and talkboxes instead. At these Funk studios, Jesse developed personal and professional relationships with funk artists such as G-funk’s Roger Troutman, Talking Heads’ Bernie Worrell, P-funk’s Nairobi Sailcat, the Parliament/Funkadelic’s Michael Hampton, Sly Stone, Darryl Hall (I never knew Hall was also a producer) among the more prominent. [NOTE: OK, Funk music – I never particularly gave any thought of it as a musical genre. Officially, Funk is defined as a rhythmic mixture of soul, jazz and R&B that simply stresses the electric bass and drum lines and sustained chords while de- emphasizing melody. So, I guess I AM a closet Funk Music fan, after all - I mean, I guess EVERYBODY considers James Brown funky. George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, of course. Rick James, sure. The Time; Earth,

Wind, & Fire, likewise. But Aretha Franklin? Sly and the Family Stone? War? The Talking Heads? Prince? Prince, the Purple One, for gosh sakes? These are all considered Funk artists?] In 1976, Jesse sang and played, along with Bernie, on Ruth Copeland’s album ‘Take Me to Baltimore’ https:// youtu.be/_eBOEJGtFfM. (Copeland was actually English, but was very dark-skinned -eyed and –haired, and adopted an American Native stage persona over here. Hey, it worked for Cher and Elizabeth Warren!) In 1981 Jesse, Bernie and Nairobi formed the briefly-lived – and briefly revived in 2016 - band Space Cadets for one album https://youtu.be/ RQwET43HpWg and https://youtu. be/uCE89u3hOdg. In 1982 the band Odyssey had their biggest single hit with Jesse’s song ‘Inside Out’ https://youtu.be/s41fhNaJDCE. Jesse was also a pioneer in early music video development and filmology, never without a video camera in

his hands. He even won a film award from Francis Ford Coppola for one of his early videos! Jesse conceived, Jesse planned, Jesse directed, Jesse filmed, Jesse edited, and Jesse starred in his videos. He designed and built (but never patented or licensed – thereby losing millions of dollars) various different frames and mounts – he called them “Raeboxes”- to support video cameras on flying helicopters. [NOTE: In his ‘Over the Sea’ video, you notice that Jesse and Bernie are on top of the Brooklyn Bridge. By themselves! They simply climbed over safety and security barricades – without permission or permits, of course – and climbed to the top where his chartered camera helicopter filmed those scenes. They also filmed the scenes in Times Square the same way, without permission – why do

you think Jesse is running?!] By the time Jesse was back in Scotland, he had firmly established his ‘Scottish Funk Warrior’ character – complete with kilt (although he appears to wear different tartans continuously), armor, helmet and Claymore – which, of course, is (mostly) hype and promotion – about the same as Cincinnati-born Silver Screen Cowboy Roy Rogers’ ‘western’ authenticity was! Roy wore ‘Cowboy’ outfits outside the studio, maintained a level of commitment to character in his daily life that people today cannot understand – well, Jesse does the same! Neighbors in St. Boswell say that he wears his kilt and armor everywhere! It’s who he is now! Back in Scotland, Jesse released three self-filmed music videos, ‘The Thistle’ https://youtu.be/fw91zI9OScY, ‘Chainsaw’ https://youtu.

be/1ab9e838Hn8 and ‘Over the Sea’ (linked above), none of which made the charts in America, and only ‘Over the Sea’ barely charted in the UK, in 1985. All three songs were on his 1987 album ‘The Thistle’. [Note: This cut is previously unreleased, never on any album: ‘The Thistle National Anthem Mix’ by Roger Troutman https://youtu.be/YvNS8je2VI.] Jesse paid for those three videos entirely out of his own pockets – well over 100,000 1984-era English pounds (can’t even imagine what that would be in 2017 money!) – practically bankrupting himself – recall, he never patented his camera frame designs – causing himself years of financial hardship! [NOTE: ‘Over the Sea’ was in fact an unabashed love song written for Audrey, Jesse’s then fiancée – now wife - in Scotland – she was the blonde www.publicnewsonline.com

drummer in the video! The Scottish scenes were filmed on the mountains of Kintail – called ‘The Five Sisters’ and at Eilean Donnain Castle – both are the ancestral strongholds of my clan, the MacKenzies.] While Jesse had returned to Scotland with visions of bringing his American music, video and film industry contacts and developing the then virtually non-existent English music/video industry – he was handcuffed by English residency laws that required him to sign only with the sole English subsidiary company instead of keeping his American contacts/contracts. The English executives had NO interest in his crazy “Scottish Parliament-Funkadelic music” – they never took him seriously, never backed or promoted him, merely considering him a novelty act of some kind and totally blew him off!

MARK’S MUSICAL MUSINGS

Worse, because of the sole contract Jesse was forced to sign, they controlled all production and development of his future music and videos. Making the video for his version of ‘Inside Out’ https://youtu. be/aNwjotSf898 over the company’s interference was the breaking point and caused him to file bankruptcy – a nightmare under then English laws that kept him tied up in courts for 18 years – but which he eventually won! The truth is, Jesse brought this unhappy situation about, at least partially, on his own, because of his own ingrained distrust of English – and especially English record executives - and his refusals to travel to England and try to improve their creative and management differences! [NOTE: You remember, I did call him an EXTREME Scottish patriot – he actually ran for Parliament TWICE – while wearing full Highland armor regalia - on a Separation ticket! https://youtu.be/m2LqoOUCy7U and https://youtu.be/Idra5qy7J38. And this was long before the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum, which he

vigorously campaigned for, as well!] Also, because at that time, despite being linked to Scotland since 1603, generally the English have always considered Scotland and all things Scottish – especially Highlanders – bucolic if not outright barbaric! One UK record company Executive stated Scotland was” just an inferior little provincial nation”! So the English Execs considered Jesse’s music and Scottish Highlander persona a trick, a bad-taste joke at best, and could not nor would not promote him properly. Nowadays, despite the post 2014 revival of Scottish nationalism – or maybe because of it - there is still an upper limit, an “acceptable display of Scottishness” in the UK music industry – and Jesse is WAAAAAY beyond that limit! Jesse says that the UK music establishment cannot differentiate his appearance and authenticity from his extreme nationalism! So his personal music career has languished since the 1980’s! Jesse was also one of the pioneers in Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) recording – in 1995 he

released his album ‘Compression’ (unfortunately, I do not have this one in my library – but here is one of the cuts https://youtu.be/xIwRxhJdR2o) thru a German record company to bypass English legal restrictions. It was recorded entirely via ISDN, and Jesse was in his home town of St. Boswells, other artists were in South Africa and America, the studio was in Germany – again, entirely financed out of Jesse’s own pockets. Jesse mentors music students from the Borders College, helped them create and maintain the BRICK FM (the Funk and Soul of the Scottish Borders Community Radio) https://youtu.be/ EKlngGUZQf4. And he also still writes lyrics and music and produces other artists. ‘Tak’n My Time’ recorded by Nicola Cassells for her album - written by Jimmy Douglass and Jesse - started in 1992 then finally finished in 2002 https://youtu.be/bdFw85JCs2k - and yes, Jesse is in full Warrior regalia in the studio! In 2013, Jesse recorded a Gaelic ver-

sion of ‘Over the Sea’ for AN DROCHAID ‘The Bridge Rising’ album project – I simply cannot find a complete recording anywhere – at a price I am willing to pay - so far! This clip has some raw footage and sound and one verse of Jesse singing in Gaelic https:// youtu.be/vNDRo9OmcD4. Jesse has teamed up with Adam Ant since 2010 (another costumed 1980’s glam-rocker, who, unfortunately, is definitely on the has-been trail! Too bad! I really liked Adam back in the day!), and frequently opens shows for him in the UK. He also maintains a still-active Scottish Pub Concert schedule of his own. So, unfortunately, there is not a lot of Jesse Rae’s own music out there – two albums and one compilation, along with three videos. But Jesse does have his own YouTube channel, and has posted dozens of behind-thescenes and making-of videos that are very interesting. Check him out.

TONY & CHRISTY PONTE

CHRISTY PONTE AND PH2 story and photos by Matt Vernon Christy Ponte owns, operates and cooks at PH2 on FM1960 and I-45. Christy Ponte is a good friend and neighbor who has a heart of gold, and a dream. She says she first found she enjoyed cooking after spending time in the kitchen with her father. Her dad was military and was not at home a lot. When he was home, he cooked and baked for their large family. She helped him in the kitchen to bond with him. Food gives people feelings. Great food makes people happy, excited, content. She started young and still loves cooking! Christy worked at the Pour House for over 20 years before they closed. When asked why she opened a great bar and restaurant, her answer was unexpected. She told me a story of another waitress, whom she worked with for 2 decades. They were close friends. Her friend came to her on a Thursday. (Christy says she remembers the incident like it was yesterday) and asked her to keep the tradition going. Christy was confused, but her friend persisted, “Promise me you will keep this place going!” Christy thought about it, then made that promise. “I promise to keep it going.” Christy said. The Sunday after making that promise, her long-time friend lost her life in a car accident. Christy is a woman of her word and when it became impossible to keep the Pour House opened, Christy opened PH2, in December of 2011, to keep a promise to a good friend. The name PH2

stemmed from being Pour House #2. She kids that it is not a Pho place! When asked about her philosophy, Christy opened up about her beliefs. She says as an owner she treats her staff with respect and courtesy. The staff is an extension of the owner and represents her. She runs her restaurant/ pub in the old-fashioned way. She gets to know her customers, talks to them, becomes friends with them. Guests are more than family, more than just a dollar. As a cook, she makes all her dishes from scratch. Christy designs, preps and cooks her entire menu from scratch daily. She still believes in serving a great quality delicious dish at a great price. Her lunch specials are only $5.99 and for the quality, that is near impossible to beat! When I ask her how she’s doing, she always replies simply, “Living the dream!” Sometimes, restaurant owner operators work 100-110 hours a week. They sacrifice family time. They prepare fresh recipes, cook, bartend, run numbers, place orders, check on guests, advertise, etc. And some months, when you spend more than you make, you don’t get a paycheck. It is a hard and thankless calling. Christy remembers her promise and holds on her dream. It is important when you have a vision to hold on to it and never let go. Please go help support our promise keepers and dream makers by checking out PH2 on Facebook and in person!

WHAT IS A POP-UP DINNER? Pasta e Pesto features a dining event unlike anything that occurs anywhere else in Houston. It’s called a Pop-up Dinner. So, to the uninitiated, the obvious question is ‘what is a pop up?’ We sat down with Pasta e Pesto owner Matt Vernon and asked him to explain what that is. “It’s something that we started from the time we opened for business. Our talented chefs love to create, trying to come up with recipes that no one has seen before, something original, something different. Something really delicious, something hand crafted. We put them all together and create an entire evening out of it,” Vernon explained Pasta e Pesto’s Pop-ups are held once a month, usually the last Monday of the month. These are reservation only events and Pasta e Pesto closes regular dinner service in order to accommodate the pop-up event. The dinner consists of five courses: Appetizer, Pasta, Entre’, Salad or Soup, Dessert. The food served is not on the menu as

normal Pasta e Pesto fare. The dishes are one-of-a-kind creations made by their talented staff or highly trained professionals. The dishes presented at the Pop ups are so special, diners take pictures of their meal and post them on Yelp and on to the many foodie groups. “We’ve had folks who came in on the basis of seeing a dish presented on Yelp from a Pop Up and wanted to buy it. We had to explain that it was a once in a lifetime dish and that it isn’t made anymore. That’s how special these events are.” Vernon explained that, weeks before the Pop Up, his chefs experiment with various tastes and dishes. The proposed dishes are presented to Vernon, his wife Mary and his design chef David for tasting. “Some tweaks are made. A little extra garlic here, a little spice there. We want to make sure that everything presented in the Pop Up is very tasty. In the end, everyone who comes is very well fed.” The next dinner is scheduled for Monday April 24th.

DEPECHE MODE OFFERS UP SPIRIT by Robert Castro

Spirit is Depeche Mode’s 14th studio album, and couldn’t have come at a better time. Opening with the pointedly political “Going Backwards,” frontman Dave Gahan laments ‘We’re goin’ backwards/turnin’ back our history.’ Sung over an electro beat emulating a march (a protest march?) the album begins with what feels like a passionate plea. In this Trump/Brexit time, there is little nuance to the songs on Spirit. The political bend is heavy

loved like “People are People” and “Policy of Truth” are too few and far between for this to be a really great album. “Cover Me” is one of those redemptive songs that Depeche Mode are so good at, beginning slow and then giving us an optimistic climb in

Overall, Spirit is broody and melancholy. It’s a tough listen. If you listen straight through and make it to the end, there’s a bit of hope inside you that the album will leave us WITH some hope. Unfortunately, all we got is Martin Gore reminding us that “We’re fucked,” on “Fail”, the final track. I used to listen to Depeche Mode all the time, growing up. So much so, that now, some 20 years laterI wanted to like this album more than I did. I really tried. The best music brings out emotions, or memories or just makes us feel. To be honest? All Spirit did is make me feel like turning it off.

For those of us that grew up with a soundtrack of Depeche Mode songs playing in the background of most of our days, Spirit will at times, bring us back to the same feelings of our youth. However, the similarities to songs we
