Normally this column, Letter Rip, is the last thing completed before it goes public, or to “press”. Restarting the Public News has been as exciting for us as much as it will be for you, our fine readers, to consume. The latest delay was due to me, the publisher, also known as the guy who writes this column. It was not so much about Ken Petty writers block, which was probably 40% of the problem, but about political block. The fear of pissing off our readers who do not like our politics. Granted I did not vote for Mr. Trump (giant sigh of relief from the left) but at the same time I did not vote for Ms Clinton either (massive knawing of teeth from the left). Was this a surprise to you? I did vote but not for the two very flawed candidates that the major parties were able to fling together. Come on, Bernie Sanders was the only other Democrat to challange Clinton?

So what is our political bend, if we had one? It would be as a Constitutional Conservative. Notice I did not say Republican or Democrat? The reason being is that both parties are bought and sold to the highest bidder. They are establishment parties, existing only to enslave the masses via excessive taxation and regulations. That is taxation and regulations that the establishment exempt themselves from. After all, the elites (slang for the establishment) believe that all are equal, just some are more equal than others, meaning the rank and file, little people (or as Clinton called us all, the deplorables). We have got to get a clue and stop voting in these wolves. Congressmen Kevin Brady and Congresswoman Shiela Jackson Lee are two stripes from the same zebra. Some are getting the hint and did two things, stayed home on election day or voted third party. Now that the Commission of Presidential Debates got their hands slapped for stacking the deck against third parties, maybe there is still hope for this country. For the record, we bend Libertarian.

Correlation does NOT equal Causation by Bart Pearston One year ago, in my column was a famous quote from Mark Twain that “Statistics don’t lie, but liars use statistics”. It seems that the importance of a knowledgeable, informed electorate that was deemed a necessity by our founding fathers must be married to being informed CORRECTLY.. No longer do our politicians expect that their prewritten speeches will be the basis of voters’ choices. The Information Age has meant a competition to use figures and statistics to support an agenda has reached a crescendo. This in and of itself is fine. The danger comes when only one side’s numbers or polls are ever examined. Examples like the Brexit, House and Senate, or Trump’s election make 2016 a case in point. Will we learn in this, this new year?

when watching this league, race isn’t factor. Yesterday’s game between the Chiefs and Steelers had every defensive starter on both teams from the race that makes up 13% of the population. The question is: Does this prove “racial discrimination”? Does the absence of “non-white kickers”?

The questions are obviously absurd, but are the arguments in today’s political discourse any less so? The range stretches from racial criminal justice figures to gender income disparity, but be careful when an isolated correlated factor is submitted as “the cause” or “proof ”. Whenever you are dealing with human populations, there are multitudinous factors involved. Sadly, this nascent year shows signs of this politically increasing rather than decreasing so far. LSC-Tomball and Tomball ISD Affirm Early College High School Agreement at Interactive Forum Lone Star College-Tomball President Dr. Lee Ann Nutt and Tomball Independent School District Superintendent Huey Kinchen signed a ceremonial agreement on Tuesday, January 24, solidifying the partnership between the two entities to establish an early college high school, Tomball Star Academy, beginning fall 2017. The event rounded out an interactive Community Forum, hosted by Dr. Nutt, at which she shared information and updates about LSC-Tomball with community members. “It was in 1972 that Tomball ISD passed a resolution declaring its support of a college campus in Tomball,” Dr. Nutt reminded the forum attendees. “And now, here we are, signing an agreement with TISD for an early college high school. I really feel things have come full circle. I’m proud of how fruitful our partnership has been.”

ily. “We are the option for those who want a college education, but cannot attend a four-year university away from home,” she said. According to the presentation, thousands of community members utilized LSC-Tomball facilities such as the Beckendorf Conference Center, the Performing Arts Center, and the LSC-Tomball Community Library over the last year. Recent construction on the third-floor of the Health Science Building located near the Tomball Regional Medical Center now places LSC-Tomball in the top-tier when it comes to training in Allied health programs such as pharmacy technology and surgical technology.

Attendees were invited to provide feedback to the information they received via a real-time mobile app that displayed responses on a screen for all to see. Based on the answers provided, it was inReaffirming the fact that comnovative programs such as LSCmunity colleges are intended to be “college for all,” Dr. Nutt began Tomball’s work with GRIT in the the forum outlining LSC-Tomball’s classroom as well as the lifePATH current enrollment and how Lone degree that delighted the audience most. lifePATH is a unique Star College compares to other community colleges in the country. program that allows adult students She also explained why a “two-year who have disabilities that affect school” often ends up being a “six- executive functioning learn the social and skill expectations needed year school” for most students, in the business world, academic who often attend part-time while also working and/or raising a fam- world, and personal relationships. OWN YOUR GREATNESS

“Life Coaching?” So, what is life coaching? This is the question I get asked the most often. What do we actually do? How can we help, and what is the process? First, let me introduce myself. My name is Debbie Warren, I am the founder of “Own Your Greatness” Life Coaching. I hold my certification of Debbie Warren completion in Life Coaching, as well as Anxiety Therapy. Furthermore, I have additional training in nutrition, interpersonal communication, counseling and psychology. I believe in order to be at our best, it is imperative that we feed and nourish the three parts of us that make us a whole person. Our physical self, our emotional self and our spiritual self. When one of these is off, it does indeed affect the others. For it is a fact, if you

have a weakened link, then the chain itself becomes susceptible to breaking. Life coaching is about taking our past experiences, both good and bad, and using them to better ourselves. We do this in order to make ourselves more compassionate human beings. It can then leave us open to understanding and change. Remember, our past does not have to define us, rather we have the power to use it to make us better, stronger individuals for ourselves and others. It is about teaching you to be solely responsible for actions and reactions. It is also about setting goals and reaching them. In doing so, we must learn how to break down roadblocks, both emotional and physical that prevent us from reaching our goals. We need to feed our bodies, our minds, as well our spirituality in such a way that we as a whole are connected and at our healthiest. Statistics show an alarming num-

ber of people suffer from anxiety and depression. It is normal to have emotional setbacks as situations occur in everyday life. Unfortunately, there are many that suffer alone and in silence. This is not necessary, as there are healthy alternatives and solutions. It is important for each of us to have a support mechanism in place as we go through these experiences or setbacks. This is especially true as we may be too overwhelmed to see it ourselves. I would like to utilize this publication as an informational support exchange and open public forum, for the readers. If you have topics you would like more information on or addressed, please feel free to forward them. If you are looking for something more personal, or one on one, please feel free to reach out as well. I would like to close with a quick lesson in ‘Relationship Coaching.’ 1. You cannot fight someone else’s

demons for them. Strength comes to us when we conquer those fears ourselves. It is then that we can then empower ourselves. 2. We are responsible for the things we say and do to others. Not only as an action, but as a reaction as well. Finally, do not blame others for the choices you make, they are yours to make. Think, examine and really look at what you are about to say. How will it affect those that will hear it, or even see it. I challenge everyone to be gentle, kind and understanding of each other. We were created to love and support each other. Please visit my Facebook page @ ownyourgr8tness. I would love to get feedback and help in any way I can. Isn’t it time to “Own Your Greatness”?

FREEDOM FRAME OF MIND

Is banning things going to make America great? Would you support banning computers from America? How about oil? It’s insane to keep the tools of productivity out of America. But U.S. immigration policy is doing just that, and Donald J. Trump Arvin Vohra seems dead set on making it worse. The most valuable resource on earth is highly skilled labor. Highly skilled labor turns 40 cents worth

of plastic and metal into an iPad. It turns a little more plastic and metal into an MRI or PET machine. It turns a few knives and power tools into life saving surgery. Skilled workers dine at restaurants, buy clothing, and support many other businesses. They often eventually start businesses and create jobs. If Trump really wants to put America first, he will do everything he can to bring highly skilled labor here, instead of continuing on his lunatic plan to curtail our supply of human capital.

DEBT?

Let’s stop keeping out great customers and job creators. Let’s put America first by bringing the best and brightest here.

Remove those laws, and let’s save lives and money.

Instead of outsourcing jobs, let’s insource the skilled workers that do those jobs. Instead of having computer programmers in Asia spend money at businesses in Asia, let’s bring them here and let them spend that money here. They’re working for American companies anyway. They are “taking jobs” anyway. Why not allow them to also patronize American businesses?

1. Eliminate the H1 cap entirely. Stop keeping out skilled workers, job creators, and entrepreneurs who create jobs. 2. JONATHAN BROWN HOUSTON MOSAIC ARTIST TURNED LOOSE story by Samantha Matcovsky all photos by Craig Bryon

When you think of glass or tile...or rather, when you picture the face of a massive city building, a driveway or a hospital waiting room, you probably don’t think of mosaic art. You probably don’t think of art at all. But it only takes one imaginative person to change that all around. Enter Houston’s own Jonathan Brown, a mosaic master with over 25 years of turning everyday environments into intricate, bedecked works of art. After an influential backpacking trip to Central America at age 17, Brown was hooked on this ancient artistic medium. His career began shortly after, spending nearly every moment laying colorful tiles and pieces of glass side-by-side to create the masterpieces he’s known for today. Brown has built his career on mosaicing anything, in any place. His projects are often commissioned by large institutions and notable individuals, such as a residential floor piece for one of NASA’s engineers. In Houston’s Midtown, his work can be found in nearly every hospital, adorning the walls of waiting rooms. There are landscapes of rushing rivers, billowing trees, children playing baseball surrounded by wild animals, all utilizing Brown’s unique painting-esque aestnd motivation for brightening his environment. With a studio and team, Modern Mosaics, based in Houston, it’s easy to understand why the city has brought this art into the public eye. In Texas alone, the work of Jonathan Brown and Modern Mosaics can be seen in multiple wings of the Memorial Hermann Hospital’s Pavilion, McGowen and Fannin South MetroRail Station, St. Luke’s Hospital ER, even UT among countless interior and exterior, corporate as well as residential projects. lishment, the now-closed La Strada was once completely designed by Brown, including custom lighting, metal work, the glowing glass and steel chandeliers and a copper staircase. “For years now, I have been exclusively working in series. It begins with drawings and then refining the ideas into a coherent concept. This leaves a trail of works that stand on their own, but those works also reflect the journey to the final piece.”

Outside of Houston, in his most recent endeavor, Brown and his team created a 123ft x 15ft mosaic mural of a “waterfall” in the middle of Madison, WI. The waterfall, which took over the face of a 10 story building owned by local politician, Eric Hovde, consists of 517 color changing LED lights, 60 large hand painted panels and features the simulation of a massive waterfall in motion with a “splash pond” awning of glass and steel at the base. The unveiling of the project titled Technology in Motion. Brown adds “While my team knew the title the city had begun to refers to it as “The Electric Waterfall”. The project was celebrated by a citywide party in mid November of this year. Currently, Brown and Modern Mosaics are working in Boston with the company BostonArt on a large glass mosaic entry. While on the drawing table is a large theater marquee to be made of clear of acrylics and detailed glass, “glowing of course!” Brown adds. “The marriage between the transhumanism of electronic arts and the ancient form of mosaics epitomizes the human longing in 2016. We want to go forward into a technological future, but we don’t want to forget nature and how it’s shaped us. The use of electronic art combined with the ancient medium of mosaics is an aesthetic that is as much about storytelling as were the multi-story paintings of the Great French Salons.” Keep up with Jonathan Brown by visiting his website: http://mosaicart.us/

It’s not as one dimensional as “My Apocalypse”, and has a great dual guitar part which was almost worth listening to “Here Comes Revenge” to get here. The opener is serviceable oldschool thrash metal “Atlas, Rise!” is another great song drawing influences from NWOBHM and Maiden in particular, with little hints of ‘...And Justice For All’ in the tempo changes and structuring. “Moth Into Flame” gives the first disc the edge over the second, giving the disc a much needed boost of speed, and it’s another good heavy/thrash song that reminds me of “Disposable Heroes” with the guitar doodle part when it’s in full flow, ‘...And Justice For All’ in the mid-section and ‘Black album’ in terms of overall vibe. Overall I would say that Dadtallica is now back to full fledge Metallica we have all known was still in there and was just waiting to peek it’s head out once again.

STAGGER LEE by Mark Crampton

I’m sure that at some time in your life, you have heard someone sing the old song, Stagger Lee. Believe it or not, Stagger Lee [I will continue to call every version of the song Stagger Lee, no matter what the artist calls it], with well over 200 known variations, recorded over 600 times by just about any and every musician you could ever name, was about a real crime, a saloon shooting between two real men, that occurred 121 years ago! So now I’ll tell you the REAL story behind the song Stagger Lee. But be warned, this article is NOT – I say again – NOT - PC by modern standards! [Auto correct went nuts! Kept trying to replace damn near everything!] This article is from the Dec 28, 1895 St. Louis Daily Globe-Democrat newspaper: Shot in Curtis’s Place William Lyons, 25, colored, a levee hand, living at 1410 Morgan Street, was shot in the abdomen yesterday evening at 10 o’clock in the saloon of Bill Curtis, at Eleventh and Morgan Streets. by Lee Sheldon, also colored. Both parties, it seems, had been drinking and were feeling in exuberant spirits. Lyons and Sheldon were friends and were talking together. The discussion drifted to politics and an argument 18

FEB. 15- MAR. 7, 2017

was started, the conclusion of which was that Lyons snatched Sheldon’s hat from his head. The latter indignantly demanded its return. Lyons refused, and Sheldon drew his revolver and shot Lyons in the abdomen. Lyons was taken to the Dispensary, where his wounds were pronounced serious. He was removed to the city hospital. At the time of the shooting, the saloon was crowded with negroes. Sheldon is a carriage driver and lives at North Twelfth Street. When his victim fell to the floor Sheldon took his hat from the hand of the wounded man and coolly walked away. He was subsequently arrested and locked up at the Chestnut Street Station. Sheldon is also known as “Stag” Lee. [Note: Shelton’s last name was misspelled in the article as Sheldon. And this is the actual newspaper article, 121 years old, so, again, it was NOT PC!] Now, obviously this article just sets up and begs for some follow-up! Both Stag Lee Shelton and Billy Lyons were notorious members of the St. Louis lawless underworld and politics (Gee, criminals engaged in politics, or perhaps politicians engaged in lawbreaking – who would ever believe that?). PUBLIC NEWS

Stag Lee was a well-known member of the Macks, a St. Louis group of organized procurers and panderers (Pimps, to be more modern and less PC!), and connected with the floating Mississippi Riverboat brothel Stack Lee (owned by the Memphis Lee family). Macks were readily discernable by their “flash” clothing and lifestyle. (No! Pimps wearing flashy clothing and living large? Really?) Stag Lee was likewise one of the leaders of the Four Hundred Club, a St. Louis “black-and-tan [interracial] social club” with an extremely unsavory reputation! He was also a Democratic political party Negro organizer (at the time the Democrats were in a vicious battle to retain their political control of St. Louis, at that time one of the largest Democratcontrolled cities in America.) In other words, Stag Lee was the epic incarnation of a “dangerous black man”; one who was sly, streetwise, cool, lawless, unscrupulous and violent; a “big bad man” (shades of Leroy Brown!). Less is known about Billy Lyons, except that he also had criminal and political connections. He was a Stevedore, a Union organizer, a Republican political party Negro organizer, and apparently a “business” as well as political rival of Stag. According to witnesses, a

www.publicnewsonline.com

couple nights after Christmas, Stag Lee and Billy were in a local bar, drinking, had some kind of argument, and Lee grabbed and crushed Billy’s bowler hat. Billy in turn knocked off or took Stag Lee’s Stetson hat (genuine Stetsons were just as expensive then as they are now, time-wise cultural “symbols of masculinity”!) So Stag Lee pulled out his pistol, shot Billy without remorse, retrieved his Stetson, and left. Billy eventually died, and Stag Lee was tried for murder and sent to prison (but pardoned and released 10 years later). Well, someone made up a song about the event – first heard on the docks as a “working shanty” - and it became common on the lower end of the Mississippi, on the docks and in the fields both, within a few more years! The first known stage production of Stagger Lee was an instrumental version by Prof. Charlie Lee (itinerate piano player), promoted in the Kansas City Leavenworth Herald newspaper in 1897. The first known instrumental recording of Stagger Lee was in 1923, by Fred Waring’s Pennsylvanians, and it was a hit, leading to several other recordings – all instrumentals - in the north east! https://youtu.be/7TT1gFqxN8 4?list=PLXN6CjTsfmb3t-hFR_ xv39trAm_otY_FE

The first recorded version of Stagger Lee with lyrics – as “blues”, naturally – was in 1924 by Lovie Austin https://youtu.be/ PwGNzCkJ-tk Ma Rainey recorded another lyrical version – released for a ‘B” side in 1926 - with a smiling young fellow named Louis Armstrong on cornet! https://youtu. be/eyaeJEWiAik Well, since then, it seems like every artist/singer/musician out there HAD to record a version of Stagger Lee – some good, some bad – some really bad. Apparently, each one also felt compelled to rewrite, add to or change the lyrics, name and story! Here are a few: How about the 1961 version by Pat Boone! https://youtu.be/ VvwVR3-A_n4 Another traditional version I like is by Huey Louis and the News – I don’t know if it’s on an album, but they sometimes play it in concerts https://youtu.be/FUiVGlU3Rx8 I am not always a fan of Quentin Tarantino, but I am a BIG fan of Kurt Russell (especially when he plays a bloodthirsty killer – good or bad!), and the Pacific Gas & Electric version of Stagger Lee is certainly, undoubtedly my favorite version – so the Death Proof movie soundtrack – which it is on - is great! By the same token, Samuel L.

Jackson’s version in Black Snake Moan is about the most terrible thing I have ever heard! (So I am NOT going to link to it!) OK, OK, since you insist – it’s on your OWN heads! https://youtu.be/ vrs4yqwL-Wg Or, possibly, the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds video version might be the worst! https://youtu.be/ uINi-b5Fi1o (The version he sings in concert is much better.) Nope, nope, Jackson’s is STILL the worst! Now please don’t hiss or boo, but folks, believe it or not, the version of Stagger Lee I like SECOND BEST (remember, I already said I like the PG&E version BEST!), was by – wait for it! – by Sonny and Cher on their TV show! Sonny and Cher actually sang it twice on their TV shows – on an early show in April 1971, and again on another show in a later season. This is from the later show https:// youtu.be/qecN_6ToVIc So, somewhere out there, I am sure there is a version of Stagger Lee, by some artist you will love, waiting for you to discover it! And, honestly, is there just ANY song ANYWHERE that Elvis DIDN’T record? Well, even Elvis recorded a short one minute version (a live rehearsal out-take, actually, from a 1970 Vegas show)! So that’s how I will end this article https://youtu.be/4qiaI6SZqK8
