SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

June 2022 Welcome to Benchmark Magazine June 2022 edition. In the past couple of months, we have had the good fortune of experiencing the powers of networking at trade show events.

T

he much anticipated IFSEC International 2022, on its 49th edition despite the pause because of COVID 19, provided an excellent opportunity to see the latest technologies and most prominent players in the security industry under one roof. Visitors were a mixture of security installers and integrators, end-users, distributors, consultants, manufacturers and key security associations. At IFSEC, leading security suppliers across access control, video surveillance, perimeter protection, cyber security and more collectively showcased the most innovative products launched since COVID-19. This year there was a big focus on training. For the first time at IFSEC International, engineers and integrators were given the opportunity to attend 4–6-hour training sessions hosted by a mix of specialist training providers and leading vendors in security and fire. As an added value, attendees secured CPD points. The shortage of trained engineers in the security and fire industries has worried the industry for a while. To bridge the gap, PSI Next Generation Events, held in June and September, will bring together apprenticeship candidates and companies to recruit the best. The two-day events will comprise a day of presentations held under the guidance of fire and security apprenticeship provider Skills for Security and include a programme of in-depth technology installation and application

demonstrations and a table-top exhibition area featuring key manufacturers, service providers and recruitment companies. This will be followed by a networking dinner in the evening and a golf day on the second day in which players will compete for the IFSEC Cup. Here are the dates for your diary: • Warren Weir at Luton Hoo on 22nd & 23rd June 2022 • Celtic Manor on 14th & 15th September 2022 For more information, check here Last but not least, the Benchmark Innovation Awards voting is now open! We have had a significant number of nominations for the 2022 Innovation Awards. Now is your time to make your vote count. Voting online is easy, just follow this link and make your choice. Enjoy this issue, in particular it’s worth listening to the insightful profiles on IPS and Johnson Controls.

Johnson Controls offers unified solutions in Europe Johnson Controls has been growing its security offerings every year by acquiring other companies such as Tyco and Qolsys, enabling it to offer tailored solutions for its clients’ needs.

W

e interviewed Jeremy McLerran, Director of Global Marketing for Johnson Controls Security Products, who walked us through the company’s growth strategies, and plans. Johnson Controls is offering smart building solutions to the European residential market.. In this sector, a star brand from the Johnson Controls family is Qolsys. After having had the majority shares on Qolsys since 2014, Johnson Controls fully acquired the residential and commercial security and smart-home

manufacturer in 2020. Jeremy, who was previously working at Qolsys, tells us that one of the main hurdles when merging companies is that they come with their own cultures. The other challenge is when products that once competed need to start working together. “When it comes to people, one of the things we are very proud of,” says Jeremy “, is that we have a very diverse and accepting company culture.” “Amalgamating products can be taxing, but we rise to the challenge. All parts of the business, from the technical team, marketing, and sales to the products team, collaborate to put everything into one platform. We take these technologies and the best practices from these technologies and put them together into one solution to help solve our client’s needs.” Some companies within the JCI group, such as Tyco or Qolsys, still conserve their brand names. Jeremy explains that the link between the established brand and Johnson Controls happens gradually to avoid confusing endusers and customers.

The Open Blue cloud Johnson Controls Open Blue cloud platform is the umbrella brand for all cloud-based products and solutions. “We believe the future is cloud-based and software-based,” Said Jeremy, “Users will increasingly connect through their mobile devices and computers. No matter what it is, everything will become connected, and this can happen in a single platform, Open Blue.” “Our experience in North America has shown us that people find it very exciting to have visibility to all aspects of their home at the touch of a button. They can also keep control locks, heating, etc., giving clients a great experience even when away. Control and visibility of homes and smart business is our future.” “Johnson Controls continues its mission to deliver smarter, safer, intelligent and more connected buildings by deploying emerging technologies such as embedded IP, artificial intelligence and machine learning through best-in-class solutions and partnerships. Johnson Controls is leading a fundamental transformation of how spaces and places are perceived and enjoyed by balancing and responding to the flow of information, services and people that occupy buildings. By applying data from inside and outside buildings, Johnson Controls OpenBlue digital platforms empower customers to manage operations while delivering safety and security in dynamic and agile environments.” Close to the company’s core value is to provide its clients with solutions that will make their lives more sustainable. Automation allows to switch off anything that doesn’t need to be on if the dwelling is empty. “At Johnson Controls, we transform the environments where people live, work, learn and play. We drive the outcomes that matter most, from optimising building performance to improving safety and enhancing comfort. We’ve been making buildings smarter since 1885, and our capabilities, depth of innovation experience, and global reach have been growing ever since. Today, we offer the world’s largest portfolio of building products, technologies, software, and services; we put that portfolio to work to transform the environments where people live, work, learn and play.” Qolsys’ mission is to improve the quality of life through innovation and technology. Qolsys capitalises on PowerG, the industry’s leadingedge wireless intrusion technology, to offer robust features that decrease operational costs while providing ultimate reliability in a security system. “Qolsys redefines security by providing a powerful yet user-friendly and low maintenance security system that integrates wired and wireless devices to expand the system based on your needs. With a wide range of smart home and commercial security solutions, the power of simpler, quicker, and more convenient management is right in your hand. Next-generation security management is with the most important person – the client – placed at the centre.” The flagship product in the security and smart home lineup is the IQ Panel, a 7″ touchscreen control panel that combines a mobile operating platform with an all-in-one security and life safety panel. The Qolsys IQ Panel connects to devices installed in a home or business using seven different wireless radios, like PowerG, a proprietary long range wireless security frequency for door sensors, motion sensors, glass break detectors, smith detectors, flood detectors and more. A

ll phone lines in the UK will be switched from analogue to IP by the end of 2025. The BT Openreach ‘All-IP’ migration program for the PSTN network has already started and shown successful results UKwide.

From the moment the analogue PSTN is switched off, everyone, including businesses currently using PSTN-based services for voice calls and security systems, lifts, or others, will be affected. Any system depending on the current analogue PSTN will

need to move to a digital solution to continue operating.

Why do you need to act now? Waiting to deal with this issue for a couple of years time will not work. By September 2023, a ‘Stop Sell’ will be implemented in all Wholesale Line Rental (WLR) products. The WLR product family comprises broadband products, WLR3 Analogue, ISDN2, ISDN30, LLU SMPF, SLU SMPF, Narrowband Line Share and Classic products running on analogue. Hardware that depends on WLR lines may not work when the line is converted to ‘All IP.’ Anyone using WLR and related products must migrate to alternative products based on Broadband. Users should be notified about the switchover by letter or email, telling them when their switchover date is likely to be. However, the time between the official notification and actual switchover may vary, so

PS, a business unit of Securiton Germany, has as its tagline ‘Intelligent Video Software.’ We talked to Peter Treutler, IPS Director and member of the management board of Securiton, to find out how the company has evolved into designing and implementing high-level intelligent video analytics. Peter joined IPS in 2013 and has overall responsibility for the IPS division. As a member of the management board, he is jointly responsible for the strategy and success of Securiton. Read the article and watch the video to get the full picture.

Can you provide a short introduction to IPS Securiton? IPS was founded in 1965 in Munich by Peter Schuberth. IPS is today a business unit of Securiton Germany; it’s not a separate business. The IPS technology brand has been part of Securiton Germany since 2006. The name IPS does include the initials of the founder, ‘PS’ and the ‘I’ stands for Industrial

technology. Originally it was focused on radio and television, but Schuberth’s passion for video centric technology changed its focus. Schuberth focused on video sensor technology; needless to say, IPS has been the leader in early and advanced video technology since then. In 1970 the first IPS video sensor was ready for the market. The IPS Deltaguard. IPS has developed numerous innovative and advanced video analytics products in the following decades, especially for highsecurity applications. Customers have been authorities, military, police and the energy industry – for instance, refineries and nuclear research centres. Schuberth died in the early 1990s. The new owner, a former business partner, enthused the company to achieve this goal: ‘To develop the best video analytics the world has ever seen.’ And the staff did it. This was the birth of our multiple award-winning video analysis IPS Outdoor Detection including the patented IPS 3-zone concept, one of the fundamental concepts for modern video analytics. Also, the IPS 3D geo-referencing and simultaneous object confirmation were developed at this time. Both are still basic elements of another award-winning video analytics, the IPS Dome Tracker. In 2006 IPS was bought by Securiton GmbH, and this presented new opportunities

Our partners buy from us because they can expect state-of-the-art, innovative and reliable products and new challenges to IPS. In those days, the IPS team was used to their processes set-up and was not accustomed to the management structures of a midsized company. However, after a short orientation phase, a common strategy for positioning the company in the German and the European marketplace could be defined and implemented The last 15 years have been hectic for us. Lots of technical achievements, cooperative partnerships and awards took place. In 2021 we launched two new products, the IPS NextGen Client and the IPS NextGen Video Analytics. We have started a new age for intuitive and advanced configuration and operation of video analytics and management with these products.

What are our vision and mission? Our vision is to make the world more secure. Our mission is to provide our customers with highly reliable, robust and intuitive, easy-touse video analytics and video management

Hikvision launches TandemVu PTZ Hikvision’s new TandemVu PTZ camera range integrates PTZ and bullet camera capabilities into a single unit. TandemVu PTZ cameras can monitor large areas and zoom in on specific security incidents while maintaining focus on both ‘viewpoints’ simultaneously, eliminating the need to deploy separate PTZ and bullet cameras in pairs.

T

he TandemVu technology features Hikvision’s next-generation camera design, integrating multiple lenses in one unit to provide the big picture and small details in tandem. The new TandemVu PTZ cameras offer a range of benefits vs. deploying stand-alone PTZ cameras, or pairs of PTZ and bullet cameras mounted together. These include:

100% security coverage with no ‘blind spots’ TandemVu PTZ cameras allow security teams to continue monitoring large areas with no interruptions, while simultaneously zooming in to monitor specific security incidents that occur. This ensures that there are never security blind spots related to PTZ zooming, tilting, or panning.

Extraordinary image performance The cameras provide high-definition imaging with 2 x 4MP lenses and a super-wide view of 180°, with no image distortion (i.e., no curving of the image at the edges). Specifically, its bullet unit features Hikvision’s signature ColorVu technology, which provides crystalclear, full-colour imaging 24/7; while its PTZ unit employs Hikvision DarkFighter technology that enables excellent HD colour images down to 0.0005 Lux – ensuring that

Security and safety increasingly matters in higher education Robust security, including reliable monitoring and recording of activity in communal areas, is a key feature at the new Chapter White City student accommodation residence in West London. The site, run by Greystar Real Estate Partners – a leading developer of high-quality rental housing – caters for students from several leading higher education institutions, including Imperial College, BPP University and London College of Fashion UAL.

A

CCTV upgrade at the site reflects how security is increasingly recognised as significant asset across the higher

education sector. University leaders and their accommodation partners are keenly aware of the value that students bring in the fees they pay. And they know that perceptions of safety strongly influence prospective students, and their parents, when they are choosing where to study and live. This is particularly true for international students and those moving long distances from home for the first time. At the White City development safety and security enhanced by CCTV are selling points as well as its location and facilities. he implementation of its HID Mobile Access solution and mobile-enabled readers in Varso Place, the site of the tallest skyscraper in the European Union, allows more than 7,000 people to move more freely and securely throughout the building. Due to the size and scope of the project, HB Reavis – a renowned international workspace developer – sought a single access system for the entire building so that every tenant would have a simple, easy-touse, one-stop solution for security management. It wanted to move away from tenants having to use a traditional keyfob or card-based solution and rather implement a high-tech system that also allows for the management of digital credentials using smartphones as a primary form factor. The solution of choice included HID Mobile Access and mobile-enabled readers from HID Global which are equipped with Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) and Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies, as well as a Software Development Kit (SDK) that integrates with HB Reavis’ More App. The app covers all building services from concierge services, events, room booking systems, car or bike sharing and, of course, easy access when people enter and exit and move around.

BT Redcare provides tangible support for installers on IP migration Tele-communications, as we know it, is changing now- and there is no way back. To future proof the UK, the whole of the Public Switch Telephone Network (PSTN) will be migrated to IP by 2025. Landlines and many security alarm systems that rely on the analogue PSTN will become obsolete over the next three years.
