SECURITY TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATORS

July 2022 Welcome to Benchmark Magazine’s July issue.

S

ome of the apparent trends in the industry today are simplifying security operations, making them scalable and remotely accessible, and extracting more information from surveillance systems to extract more information. End users and installers no longer want to be restricted in either technology they use, their graphical location, or by proprietary technology from one manufacturer brand. These days, compliance regulations are numerous, and the threat landscape is constantly changing. This is why organisations, installers and enterprises look for the utmost flexibility and reliability in their security systems. Cloud-based solutions, such as the ones offered by webeyeCMS, provide one of the pieces to the flexibility puzzle. webeyeCMS is a SaaS (Software as a service) cloud-only alarm handling platform tailored for the CCTV industry. It uses fail-safe methods via the cloud to send, receive and monitor alarms. The scalable video monitoring solution does not require a capital infrastructure and, according to the company, could save clients around 40% a year in costs. (read more on page 21) The use of artificial intelligence to obtain enhanced data from the video captured by cameras is another path to finding flexibility and expanding the usability of security systems. A good example is A.I. Tech's A.I. PPE (Personal Protective Equipment ). The video analytic app uses A.I. to detect the presence of workers inside the monitored areas and raise the alarm if some are not using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as helmets

and visibility jackets. There are no restrictions on the number of workers and areas to be monitored; the app can deal with multiple workers and areas simultaneously and can be used indoors and outdoors (read more on page 16). Saving overall costs is the third leg of the stool. IDIS Solution Suite v3.5 is challenging the sector's long-established pricing structures, understanding that customers want fairer, more sustainable options for security infrastructure development. Unlike most major enterprise system vendors, IDIS does not charge annual licence fees, camera connection fees, or bundled-in fees for features that customers never use. With no yearly charges, the cost of owning and running an IDIS video system is significantly lower, letting more customers access the latest video and analytics tool (read more on page 13). Webeye looks forward to more opportunities to meet in person The Webeye team reported remarkable success from its participation at IFSEC 2022 and said it is looking forward to IFSEC Europe 2023. The stand was constantly busy, with the technical team walking visitors through the three key areas for which webeye provides security solutions: Self Monitoring, Monitoring Stations and Rapid Deployment.

A

t the centre of it all is webeyeCMS, the company’s cloud video alarm platform that offers a cost-effective way of keeping track of even the most vulnerable sites. As demonstrated on the Monitoring Station Zone at the stand, webeyeCMS can be seamlessly integrated with any current monitoring setup. The webeyeCMS solution saves time and reduces the cost for operators as they can have a sophisticated IT solution without needing an in-house development team. The video alarm monitoring platform is a powerful tool to monitor, manage and quickly distribute alarms. If required, ‘Calipsa AI’ can also be used to visually verify any intrusion or disturbance within seconds after the alarm has been triggered. An automated alarm

How HID helped physical access control solutions to take off HID Global has its origins in the aerospace industry. For over 30 years HID has been leading the way on what it takes to make access to buildings easy and secure and how to help businesses evolve with the times.

W

e interviewed Steven Commander, HID Global’s director of consultant business management to find out where the company, and in particular its Physical Access Control Solutions [PACS], is and what can we expect in the near future. Steven has been at HID for 14 years. His role focuses on liaising and engaging with security consultants, electrical engineers and

8

access control system designers. His depth of knowledge gives an in-depth insight into HID’s complete range of physical access control solutions so that consultants can include them in their designs.

Can you provide a short introduction to your company? HID originates from the aerospace industry. The name, HID, is an acronym for Hughes Identification Devices. The business was founded in 1991 and was originally a subsidiary of Hughes Aircraft. You may remember the 2004 Martin Scorsese film, Aviator, starring Leonardo di Caprio which depicts the life of the founder of the firm, Howard Hughes. HID was acquired in 2000 by the Swedish conglomerate, Assa Abloy AB, a global leader in access solutions, and is now a whollyowned business within the group. The group has 190 brands, such as HID and Yale [locks

and home security]; significant market leaders in their own right. HID Global’s vision is powering the trusted identities of the world’s people, places and things. Every day millions of people in more than 100 countries use its products and services to securely access physical and digital places. And over two billion things that need to be identified, verified and tracked are connected through HID’s technology. The company structure comprises six business areas: Physical Access Control Solutions (PACS), Secure Issuance (SI), Identity and Access Management Solutions (IAMS), Citizen ID Solutions (CID), Identification Technologies and Extended Access Technology (EAT). Put simply, HID Global sells products and services to enable authorised access to buildings, allows people to securely log into computer networks and track assets in manufacturing plants and other commercial settings. HID Global also makes the various components like chips that go into passports, national ID cards and driving licences. The scope of its portfolio is broad. From a PACS perspective, the mission of the company is to be a market leader for trusted identity solutions by providing a seamless customer experience leveraging a connected architecture complemented by cloud services. To provide some scale to this, as international markets recovered after Covid19, group sales increased 8% in 2021 to SEK 95,007 million [Kronor] with operating profits up 19% to SEK 14,181 million. In Pounds Sterling, that’s around £7.74 billion and £1.14 billion respectively. HID Global employs about 4,400 people worldwide.

Millions of HID readers and hundreds of millions of HID cards are therefore in use today. HID solutions are used in all industry sectors such as government, education, healthcare, financial services and so on.

HID’s main flagship PACS products are: • Seos® – credential technology platform; • HID Signo™ Readers – the signature line of HID readers launched in 2020 • HID Mobile Access® – allows an individual’s mobile device to be used to gain access to secured doors, gates, networks, and services • HID Aero™ and HID Mercury Controllers – a controller range which provides a flexible, open architecture, IP-enabled platform for deploying a broad range of access control systems • HID Origo™ – a cloud platform which allows technology partners to create access control solutions. It stores identity information about users in a database, their access rights to a building, specific zones and so on.

What are the company’s flagship PACS products? When a person wishes to enter a building, they walk up to a door, use a badge to touch a reader on the wall and then – if authorised – a controller unlocks the door giving them access. The component and platform technology behind this simple scenario is what HID Global designs, manufactures and sells. In other words, the badges, readers, [door] controller modules and associated management software. This has now evolved into a mobile and digitally based approach underpinned by cloud-based services.

Pyronix NanoShock offers discreet perimeter protection Pyronix has released its compact Grade 2 wireless shock sensor, the NanoShock (Product code: NANO/SHOCK-WE).

F

lexibly fitting out of sight within uPVC window or door frames, or surface mounted with its low profile and pleasing design, the NanoShock has been designed to deliver fast and easy professional installation and reliable protection. Pyronix Marketing Director, Laurence Kenny, said: “We’re really pleased to introduce the NanoShock, as it brings with it a wealth of benefits; not only its optimised installation and calibration features, but also how it’s been developed to provide resolute performance in changeable environments alongside its high-end and attractive finish.” The NanoShock is an accelerometer device that detects impacts caused by potential

intruders as they attempt to break into any residential or small-commercial property. Installed without having to worry about the positioning of any detection chamber or requiring further adjustments, the NanoShock is simply positioned where required and as soon as the sensitivity is set, it autoorientates. Once placed, calibration is also quick and simple with the pinhole button on the front with LED indication. Using the included pin needle calibration tool, all the installer has to do is hold the button and cycle through 5 increments to the required sensitivity using the LEDs to guide them, with 1 being the least sensitive and 5 the most sensitive. With this enhanced installation process there’s no need to open the device to configure the PCB, which is encased in the front of the sensor along with the batteries. This setup makes maintenance very straightforward too; replacing its batteries without having to unscrew anything. Recognising that the device will be fitted in changeable environments that can be humid
