Letter Phew! It was a MAD rush putting this issue together. Why, you ask? Well we wanted you guys to have the magazine with you just in time for Eid (and yes, we wanted to enjoy the festive break as well! Wink wink!) Our August issue is packed with excitement; we’ve covered the most happening events taking place all this month – the highlight being Ministry of Culture’s Festival (pg 14) – and as usual we have some interesting features too including how you can really enjoy some quality time this summer by keeping your kids busy during the holidays (pg 18) and an interview with a unique scholarship charity foundation in Bahrain (pg 42). Also, Ali Mohammed Musa shares a few thoughts on his newly published book and his ongoing fight with physical disability (pg 36). Talking of charity, we feature Pierre Fourie, the Country Manager of Azadea Group who is set to run a marathon next month. If

you think you want to fund this project then go to (pg 38). Don’t look too far for a fashion guide, for this season – the issue you’re reading has everything you need to know; what sun shade best suits your personality? What your kid needs to have for the ‘Back to School’ season (pg 44) AND who is the BIG Spanish debut in the Kingdom (pg 56)? After all the festive cuisine and altered food habits during Ramadan, give your body a break – our teen contributor Dilara shares tips on the ideal summer workout (pg 66) and our health section (pg 68) is sure to help you get a good night’s sleep. Look up our motoring section for the latest cars and updates on the automobile industry (pg 106). Enjoy the festive season, you guys and see you’ll next month with yet another scintillating issue! Until then, stay beautiful!

High-end Property, Middle East Dear Editor, I’m an independent real estate agent and came across your property pages in the last few issues. While I could never afford these penthouses and apartments myself, I must say they are luxurious. I was wondering if I could give you a few good leads for property in Bahrain and the region; will you be able to publish them? House Broker

Dear House Broker, we’ve received a good response from readers and advertisers since we’ve launched the high-end property section in Bahrain Confidential. Please get in touch with us on info@arabianmagazines.com and we can discuss further.

Freelance with Bahrain Confidential I’m a freelance motoring journalist and would love to contribute articles to your magazine by way of car reviews and other motorsport news. Please do let me know how we can take this forward. Vroom

Dear Vroom, please share your details along with a few samples of your work on info@ arabianmagazines.com and our editorial team will consider.

We second your thoughts, Nizam. Bahrain’s culture and tourism has definitely been under the spotlight, thanks to the Ministry’s efforts. We wish them all the best!

Monthly Movie & Show Guide Dear Ed, I’m a regular reader of Bahrain Confidential. I would like to know if you can include info on movies and shows, like a guide, every month. Ryan

Dear Ryan, thanks for your suggestion. We do not run with the TV pages as they tend to become outdated. So it’s better to check the GDN for updates. We prefer to use the space for information which will benefit you and Bahrain.

An advocacy to promote unity through arts and music

R

eem Events Management, an innovative group of highly energetic and pro-active professionals, are currently in the middle of a huge production that will be made available to all of us this Eid on October 06, 2014, from 8:00pm to 10:00 pm at the Bahrain International Circuit. Aptly titled “Bahrain in Harmony”, the concert features multi-awarded singer/ songwriter David Pomeranz. The event is actually beyond a musical concert production, it is an ambitious campaign that help develop a harmonious community in the Kingdom by staging big productions year after year involving arts and music. Ms. Suzanne Baldago, Reem Chairman says “Bahrain is a small country with a lot of different nationalities as residents. Having a clear communication amidst the differences in language is crucial in maintaining a harmonious community. That’s why we try to achieve this through music and arts, because these are universal. A great music is a great music whether you are a Bahraini or a Filipino. Same thing with arts, a wonderful painting or any work of art will appeal to everyone regardless of their nationality”. Reem Events Management has designed “Bahrain in Harmony” to become an

This project is not just another event; it’s an advocacy, a campaign to promote harmony through arts and music. This is for everyone... it’s for you and me. As what have been mentioned above, Reem Events Management is bringing multi-awarded international singer/songwriter David Pomeranz for its pilot production under the “Bahrain in Harmony” banner. “We have chosen Mr. David Pomeranz for this initial project because his brand of music is so universal that it would appeal to any nationality, age and gender. In 2013, he had a sold out concert in Dubai and we want our people in Bahrain to enjoy the same experience” says Reggie, the group’s in charge of Marketing, Social Media

Branding and PR. “In the next 8 weeks, expect us to intensify our campaign as we promote both the long term advocacy and this concert during Eid. Joining David Pomeranz on stage is multitalented, multi-awarded international actress/ performer/host Ms. Isabel Granada, a Fil-Spanish mestiza beauty who incidentally is also a fully licensed commercial pilot. Talk about versatility! She will be hosting the whole event and will double up as David’s front act. Ms. Suzanne was a picture of confidence during the whole interview process. She was beaming with pride for having a team that can help her realize her vision. She was also thankful to everyone involved in the production, from the sponsors/partners, to the Ministry of Culture and to all the other ministries that have helped the project become a reality. The “Bahrain in Harmony” Eid concert event tickets will be available at the Virgin Megastore City Center (Both online and in-store). Tickets are priced at BD 15 for Gold and BD 50 for Diamond/VIP.

poem

Another Surface

In this poem, David Hollywood talks of the notion of re-discovering who we were at a happier time in our lives, but how we buried these senses even though we always wished for and wanted them, and how with a little honesty we can be re-found once more.

Surfaced, from the depths we find, Loves spirits which we left behind, Remembered not, foreseen somehow, Our clement thoughts retained? We bow, And welcome treats come clearer now. And reason speaks to stay the search, For speech, to state, what matters? Worse, Was order, lost to mind, our heart? Instead we gathered not, what’s kind, Of something’s, sometime’s wished, can’t find. Oh, show me how I’m where I stand, When all before, seemed so profound, And when in fact I wasted, fast, Attempts, that vanished. Moments bound, My efforts and my thoughts refound. Have come emerged up to, at last, This place wherein I hid my past.

By Sumit Sharma, artist and photographer staying in Bahrain.

“I still haven’t figured out how I can capture the smell of a place in photographs, so that I can bring back more than just a frozen moment. Imagine if you could get the sweet and warm aroma of freshly baked bread and cakes from some beautiful French bakery in Pondicherry, which you photographed on your last winter break!”

Sumit Sharma

How long have you been into photography? Ever since I can remember, I had better relationship with machines than humans. They work on a simple formula you treat them well, they will treat you the same. I learned to express myself better with them. The small black box that could freeze moments for posterity always fascinated me. But I started shooting fervently only two years back, after I got my first DSLR.

32 | Bahrain Confidential | August 2014

art space

“If I’ll tell you about my gear, you‘ll stop taking me seriously!”

What do you love to shoot the most? Everything, especially streets. I see so much life and energy there. They are full of interesting characters which we normally don’t pay any attention to. I like how, they’re a perfect ecosystem holding so many emotions - a sense of urgency, chaos, order, uncertainty, routine, perplexity, warmth and hustle bustle, all in the same place. If you just stand in the corner of any street and observe, you will see many stories unfold right in front of you. But honestly I want to be able to capture a lot more than just images. I still haven’t figured out how I can capture the smell of a place in photographs, so that I can bring back more than just a frozen moment. Imagine if you could get the sweet and warm aroma of freshly baked bread and cakes from some beautiful French bakery in Pondicherry, which you photographed on your last winter break! But I am working on it.

Sumit clicked this image at Bab Al Bahrain and worked on it till it started looking like this. He doesn’t take credit for the original sketch that he found on the streets.

Do you have any mentors or role models? No role models as such but some really good local names must be mentioned like Jody Peck & Ali Barqawi who have done amazing work. Not forgetting upcoming artists who are shooting some great photos; check out OSnap Pictures on Facebook and Instagram.

A lesson you’ve learned from your experience that you always follow?

Any inspirations? I grew up among artists from various streams, painters, sculptors, musicians, writers, so they were all a great influence. Music, movies, books, childhood memories, day to day experiences, conversations with friends, they’re all contributing factors. In terms of photography, works of Prabuddha Dasgupta and Pablo Bartholomew have always fascinated me.

Stop wasting your time on insipid Canon vs Nikon arguments and start shooting. Don’t worship your gear, use it. You’ll always learn more with limited gear. If I’ll tell you about my gear, you‘ll stop taking me seriously! And most importantly understand and learn your art; people will appreciate you for your art and creative sense, and not because of your 1D (equipment).

WPN ART CHARITY Making the world a better place one painting at a time.

The organisers with the Bahraini artists. (Centre) Ali Mohammad Musa & (Extreme Right, Sitting) Salah

“Though Bahrain has registered an improvement in the education for disabled and special needs persons, in the recent years, Ali insists that there is still a need for more awareness measures to sensitise society to such people.”

T

he Women’s Professional Network (WPN) invited families and guests across the Kingdom to attend its 2nd Art Charity event held at the Riwaq Art Space. The event was organised and co-sponsored by UTalk and Al Riwaq Art Space, in collaboration with Bahrain Mobility Center and Yousif & Aysha Al Moayyed Charity. The evening featured art work sales by talented disabled Bahraini artists, including an exclusive book launch for Ali Mohammad Musa, a Bahraini special need, called ‘A Dream without Limits’. All proceeds from the event were donated to disabled artists, care of the Bahrain Mobility Center.

My Story with Disability

Ali Mohammad Musa is a 21-year old young man with special needs. What makes

36 | Bahrain Confidential | August 2014

him special, you ask? Well, we believe it’s his drive for life and his determination to fight every obstacle that comes in between him and this drive! Ali had an overwhelming childhood, dealing with his physical condition. “Everything in my body is incapacitated with the exception of my head and what is inside it,” he writes in his book. Ali faced a lot of difficulties coping at school as well. He believes that being the only disabled child in class was challenging for the teachers. Though Bahrain has registered an improvement in the education for disabled and special needs persons, in the recent years, Ali insists that there is still a need for more awareness measures to sensitise society to such people. The book also speaks of a few people who were more than mentors and care givers to Ali. “When I turned 9, Lynda came to our home every day for my physiotherapy sessions,” he writes. “One day she told me that a friend of hers, Anna wished to see me. When I first met Anna, I never imagined

that my relationship with her would last for years.” Anna was dedicated to rescue Ali from submission, disability and isolation at home. Ali attributes his love for the English language and his ability to communicate in English to her. Anna introduced Ali to the Bahrain International Mobility Center which gave him a lot of happiness – friends and fun activities that kept him positive and going. Ali also talks of Sarah, a caregiver employed by his mother. He calls her a second mother, a sister and friend. Sadly after four years of dedicated humanitarian work, Sarah left the island. Later, Ali found Jennifer who he says is another significant person in his life. Jennifer writes in the book, about her happiness to have worked with Ali and their deep friendship. Ali is an intelligent person and aspires to own a small electronics or grocery shop some day. We wish him all the best! For more information on the art charity visit wpnbahrain.org

world youth day

World Y outh Day 12th August

40 | Bahrain Confidential | August 2014

T

he United Nations’ (UN) International Youth Day is celebrated on 12th August each year to recognise efforts of the world’s youth in enhancing global society. It also aims to promote ways to engage them in becoming more actively involved in making positive contributions to their communities. The UN defines the worlds’ youth as the age group between 15 and 24 years old, making up one-sixth of the human population. Many of these young men and women live in developing countries and their numbers are expected to rise steeply. The idea for International Youth Day was proposed in 1991 by young people who were gathered in Vienna, Austria, for the first session of the UN’s World Youth Forum. The forum recommended that an International Youth Day be declared, especially for fundraising and promotional purposes, to support the United Nations Youth Fund in partnership with youth organisations. In 1998, a resolution proclaiming 12th August as International Youth Day was adopted during the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. That recommendation was later endorsed by the UN General Assembly in 1999. International Youth Day was first observed in 2000. One of the year’s highlights was when eight Latin American and Caribbean youth and youthrelated organisations received United Nations World Youth Awards in Panama City, Panama. The theme of International Youth Day 2014 is “Youth and Mental Health” under the slogan ‘Mental Health Matters’. Youth with mental health conditions can often experience stigma and discrimination, which in turn can lead to exclusion and/or discourage people from seeking help for fear of being negatively ‘labelled’. Efforts are needed to overcome this stigma to ensure that young people with mental health conditions can lead full and healthy lives free of isolation and unnecessary shame, and that they openly seek the services and support they need. You can be part of these efforts! International Youth Day gives an opportunity to celebrate young peoples’ energy, imagination and initiatives. Celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters and around the world will recognise the vital contributions young people make to promoting mental health and overcoming challenges. With access to the right support, every person can reach their potential. The event will draw together young people, experts, UN and members states to discuss and raise awareness of the issue of youth and mental health conditions. A panel discussion, together with performances by young artists will be held, so that the issue of youth and mental health conditions can be explored in a variety of interactive and informative ways.

world youth day

As a child, I was always interested in physics and mechanics. I used to like building my own “toys” and fixing them when they stopped working. However, when I got to year 10 and started studying business studies, I developed an interest in marketing. My internship at Bahrain Confidential was related to marketing and provided me with a general idea about how it is to work in that kind of environment. Nevertheless, I still believe that I am more interested in physics and would like a career that is to do with it. Life is a test and I urge my fellow youth to follow their dreams. As part of my midyear resolutions, I intend to start learning Muay Thai (a form of combat sport)!

I remember spending the most of what I would call my youth simply wishing I was older! Each year that passed brought with it more liberation. Global society rewards those who get to certain ages with new accesses and responsibilities... everything from being able to go to the movies with your friends to being able to drive a car. My desire was always to reach and surpass these specific ages as soon as possible! There seemed to be a never ending annual increase in the amount of respect that you could command from the world, the older I became the more the world recognised my presence. But something changed a few years ago, I suppose I could pinpoint the moment, it was when I returned to college. I came back as a mature student and in the process of doing so I ventured on a week’s long work experience module with Bahrain Confidential; it was positive and confidence-enforcing. It was such engaging experiences and many more that gave me peace from my innate desire to grow and age. Being young is wonderful but we never grasp its beauty at the time. All I wish for now is the return of my youth!

Message from Ramadan Youssef Ex Intern at Bahrain Confidential

Growing up I always believed in the saying ‘Dream Big’ and it seemed that year-by-year I had a new goal I was aiming to achieve. I later began to notice a pattern in my goal-setting, I aimed for experience. Bahrain Confidential introduced me into the media world of Bahrain. I was able to get a hands-on experience through many opportunities such as conducting interviews, writing articles and coordinating a photo-shoot. They did not make me feel like merely an “intern”; I was a part of the family and felt like a journalist! I aim to expand my horizons for there is a world of possibilities that I intend to seek. At the moment, travel-journalism and public relations seem intriguing. What I do know for sure is that I want to give back and help others through writing and exploring.

SPECIAL FEATURE

AlMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation Interview by Melissa Nazareth

A

lMabarrah AlKhalifia Foundation (MKF) is an NGO founded under the Chairmanship of HH Sh. Zain bint Khalid AlKhalifa, focused on supporting Bahrain’s educational and youth developmental needs, since 2011. In keeping with the Bahrain 2030 vision, MKF is committed to enriching education, providing training opportunities and instilling social responsibility.

Scholarship Programme

One of MKF’s main focuses is its scholarship programme which was developed as a comprehensive approach to the personal growth of Bahraini youth. The programme offers full scholarships at accredited universities in Bahrain and

42 | Bahrain Confidential | August 2014

in addition includes financial incentives, enrichment workshops, internships and community service opportunities. “We don’t just provide college seats,” says Shaikha AlFadhel, Scholarship Affairs Coordinator at the foundation, highlighting how MKF’s scholarships are unique. “We want to create a second family in addition to offering financial support. For instance, the team dined at a restaurant, with the students on National Day and at another time enjoyed camping with them.” Shaikha also talks about the educational features of the programme, another element that sets MKF apart from similar initiatives in Bahrain. We organise talks by speakers who have achieved success in their respective fields and conduct training workshops for students.

Personalised Approach

MKF believes in customising programmes for its students. A part of the selection process involves asking candidates about their strengths and weaknesses which helps guide students in a better way. “If students are failing any courses we sit with them and solve the problem,” says Shaikha. Another thing unique to MKF’s scholarships is that students are asked for their subject preferences instead of forcing something down their throats. Students are also given one chance to switch their major in case they feel they are not able to cope or that is not really their area of interest. Internship programmes, a new concept at MKF, are offered to students, again based on their interest. Recently, reputed companies like GPIC, Batelco, Aramex, Kuwait Finance House, Sylvan

world youth day

The selection and screening process at MKF is tough. Applications are screened and then have to be approved by board members. This is followed by a personal interview after which the results are calculated and scaled.

Learning, DTEB and even Ministry offices have hired students as interns. Community Service is another module made mandatory at MKF. “We are still in the planning stage for this,” says Shaikha “and are yet to decide the details. For instance, students will need to complete 40 hours of community service.”

New Ideas

Applying for Scholarships

“Getting a scholarship in Bahrain is a challenge,” says Shaikha. She adds how sometimes students with a cumulative grade of even 95 and above find it difficult to get a college seat. She goes on to tell me how MKF’s scholarships are accessible and students with a grade of even 80 and above can apply. Last year, mostly public schools applied at MKF but this year the foundation has received applications from a lot of well known private schools. “As our scholarships are comprehensive they are highly preferred by most students and schools. For instance, we recently had to deny one of our candidates a scholarship only because she was covered by another one in Bahrain. But she insisted

Shaikha AlFadhel

that we give her a scholarship and that she was willing to drop the other one.” Shaikha believes that at the end of the day it’s not a competition as all foundations and institutions are working towards the same goal, education and development of Bahraini youth.

MKF have a whole bag of new ideas which they intend to execute at some stage. CSR is one of them. “We want to approach companies to propose an arrangement where we do the event planning for the CSR activity and organise all other aspects like media coverage etc,” says Shaikha. “This makes it easier for the company which then has to only finance the project. It also gives our students a great platform.” MKF recently accepted a batch of applications for scholarships. Their new student induction meeting will be held on 30th August 2014.

YOUR SUMMER WORKOUT Dilara Nagib vouches for healthy weight-loss.

Dilara Nagib

And the best way to eat a good amount but also to stay on a healthy route is to keep a food diary. Begin by writing out your current weight and then a realistic aim next to it. Do not give yourself an exact deadline. That will only cause stress and pressure, and in the end, you will resolve back to comforting foods. Every day, jot down what you had for breakfast, lunch and dinner and any healthy snacks between – not all snacks are bad for you, see. An apple or a raisin granola bar once or twice a day would be perfect. Obviously, any other fruit or vegetable would do. But by doing this, you will be able to physically see your progress and keeping a record of all of this is a great way to judge what foods will help you reach your target and what foods you’d best stay away from.

W

ith summer having dawned upon the people of Bahrain, the dominating number of teenage girls residing amid the sunny island have already started aiming high to gain the famous golden summer body. I, for one, like to grasp the idea of going out to the nearby gym every other day as a way of maintaining weight balance. I do not and will not force myself to shed off any vital organs or muscle along with the puppy fat nuisance. Achieving a cool, slender beach figure is not by any means easy. You will need to work long and hard and, obviously, eat properly.

“Most girls my age have come to the solution of starvation.” Most girls my age have come to the solution of starvation. This is ridiculous. Not eating anything and limiting the amount of liquid and vitamins your body receives is a lazy loop hole with a dead end. By skipping breakfast, lunch, dinner; your body suddenly adds on extra calories to even the tiniest of snacks. And also note that breakfast is mandatory and must not be excluded. It’s the meal that starts your metabolism for the long day ahead. The longer you go without breakfast, the longer it will take for your metabolism to burn fat. A friendly reminder to stay away from all salty and sugared snacks jammed with loads of fatty goodness. Mouthwatering? Oh, most certainly. A good way to welcome that perfect new figure? Try again.

Jog, do sit-ups, pushups, cardio exercises, cycle – anything to get your muscles working and your body moving. Naturally, it depends on how much weight you would like to lose and where: do you want to get toned or lose the flabby belly? Don’t forget to mix up your exercises but stick to your routine. Plus, doing it with a friend always helps. That way, you have someone to enjoy the experience with you and you begin to feel more motivated as it becomes less of a chore and much more fun. Don’t exceed your limitations. Everybody’s body is of different structure. Don’t push yourself so much that you hate exercise all together. But don’t be tired, bored or lazy about it. Keep a balance and be patient. Either way, that summer body is on its way.

Lumineers: A Hollywood Smile!

‘We are always looking for ways to achieve a beautiful smile, and Lumineers do just that.’ Gulf Dental Specialty Hospital has been successfully offering patients Lumineers and it has proved to not only be extremely popular, but also life changing! Patients are always lifted after they apply Lumineers and they never stop smiling!

So what are Lumineers?

“Lumineers are digitally designed to be ultrathin (about as thin as a contact lens), so they can be applied seamlessly over your teeth to deliver a natural looking smile,” explains the Hospital’s CEO Dr Amina Mustafa. That is why Lumineers is the #1 patient-requested veneer system in the world. Why Lumineers? That is a good question! Traditional veneers are generally thicker, and thus require more aggressive and irreversible removal of healthy tooth structure. The

extensive preparation technique frequently requires shots and anesthesia to minimise sensitivity and pain, and typically involves placement of acrylic temporaries for over two weeks bet, ween visits. “The minimally invasive Lumineers technique typically eliminates the need for shots or temporaries, so while you wait for your custom-made Lumineers, you’ll look great and feel great. While many dentists offer veneers, not all dentists have been trained to deliver the signature benefits of Lumineers. However, Gulf Dental Specialty Hospital has dentists who are certified to offer you class service and satisfaction. Staining and discolouration are common problems. Teeth whitening tend to be the common option, but this may not eliminate all the stains, or last very long. Lumineers,

however, provide a long-lasting white smile, no matter what you eat or drink. Whether the stains are caused by time, drinking coffee, or by tetracycline staining, Lumineers can transform your smile with a permanently bright and natural look. The benefits are endless. “The truth is that Lumineers offer much more than a beautiful smile,” explains Dr Amina, “They can help restore chipped teeth, eliminate spacing and gaps, align crooked teeth, reshape small and misshapen teeth.’ Book your Appointment with a Lumineers Certified Doctor at Gulf Dental Speciality Hospital now. WATCH YOUR ACCENT!

Katarzyna Richter, Cross Cultural Psychologist discusses language discrimination and other problems at the workplace.

I

f you ever missed a promotion or if a dream job was given to a person with a more desirable accent, you are a victim of linguistic discrimination. Identified in the 1980’s, this phenomena refers to making judgements and decisions about someone’s character, education, social status, and competencies solely based on language skills. Discrimination can be pervasive. Even in countries with anti discriminatory laws, hiring a candidate for a job can be affected by his or her accent. For example in the United Kingdom, a cockney or provincial accent is often associated with a lower social class, and as many as 28 per cent of people admit to have been discriminated due to their regional accent. According to a research conducted by the UK law firm Peninsular, 80 per cent of employers admit to making discriminating decisions based on accents. On the other hand in the USA and the Middle East, any sort of British accent is highly regarded and often desired as it projects competence and status. A Journal of Applied Psychology recently published a study led by Laura Huang from the University of Pennsylvania which showed that non-native speakers of English are perceived as having fewer social management skills essential for career success. Scientists suspect that this hurts non-native English speakers in obtaining executive jobs and venture

capital for business. Management skills involve confidence, an understanding of what others want and value, and how to build networks based on the context, “knowledge that may be more difficult for immigrants to obtain”, they write. They also suggest that human resource professionals consider training hiringmanagers on accent-bias awareness, and encourage executive recruiters and venture capitalists to stop and to consider their own

attitudes when looking for the best talent and most promising business investments. Linguistic bias behavior can be explained by a psychological phenomenon called reverse halo effect or the devil effect. This is a tendency to over-generalise and to evaluate an entire personality based on just one undesirable trait. This effect is often exposed in “first impressions” which often are a deal breaker during the job interview or work evaluations. For example when a candidate turns up for a job interview in scruffy clothes he or she leaves an impression of being less competent or knowledgeable. Similarly, a candidate with a foreign accent may be considered more or less adequate for the job based on a hiring person’s stereotype that associates a nationality with particular types of work – for instance, French chefs, German engineers etc. Stereotyping mostly occurs unconsciously, our mind simply retrieves associations acquired and behaviors seen when growing up. Using stereotypes helps people to categorise the world and make sense of it without spending too much time and effort assessing all facts. Thus we can never completely avoid stereotypes. But it is important to recognise when stereotypes are helpful from when they cause misjudgment of someone’s talents. Cultural stereotypes decrease management’s ability to assess correctly and utilize the full potential of multinational staff. Therefore employers and managers of multicultural organisations should make extra efforts when hiring and promoting their staff to look beyond stereotypes.

LETTER FROM BAHRAIN John Ridley on plagiarism.

P

atrick, my son, and I spent an inordinate amount of time researching, writing, and taking photographs for an article about the work of a man believed to be the sole remaining traditional dhow builder in Bahrain; it was the first time we had worked together. Like any father, I was so proud of Patrick, especially when the photography for the article received much acclaim. Earlier this year I found a (badly) rewritten version of our article in another magazine (not in Bahrain), the writing and the photographs were instantly recognisable; it was of course published under the name of another “author”.

John R Ridley

The real cost of plagiarism became apparent to me just recently; some readers will know that I have been working on “Taste Life,” a project intended to raise awareness of food issues, especially gluten intolerance, it’s been two years hard work. A trusted “friend” had taken the Taste Life brand and idea, selling gluten free produce in his shop, branded as Taste Life; he chose to use my work for his own gain. Plagiarism is far more than copying others original work, it is destructive; friendship, trust and integrity destroyed. Whilst theft of others work and ideas has always existed, there has never been a time where it has been so prevalent - driven by easy access to technology. We find examples throughout history, artists, writers, composers, architects copying others, and

today, we see technology companies stealing the intellectual work of their competitors; it is driven by a self-centred desire to create something without expending any effort whilst attempting to reap praise and financial rewards. Through theft, the work of the original author becomes devalued - as must the self esteem of the plagiarist. Let other people’s efforts inspire you, and in turn you can inspire others, but please be original. Creating your own content takes time and effort, but nothing beats the pride and satisfaction of producing original work. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster, visit his web site at www.johnridley.nu

I’m frequently inspired by the work of others, that inspiration can, and often does, drive the direction my work takes; many recipes in my cookbooks are inspired by tradition, then modified and adapted to be gluten free. I get great satisfaction receiving emails from people who have been inspired by my work; but the theft of other people’s ideas is unethical, illegal, and rarely fools anyone but the plagiarist - stolen work stands out!

Swiss-Belhotel There Is A New Hotel In Town! Herve Peyre

General Manager of Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain. Tell us a little about yourself

Coming from France, I bring with me at least 25 years experience in the hotel industry, starting my career with the Hilton group. I joined Swiss-Belhotel last September to prepare it for the grand opening in Bahrain. I like a good challenge, and opening a hotel from scratch seemed like the perfect one.

What is your view of the hotel industry in Bahrain?

Well everyone can agree that the trend in the hotel industry in Bahrain is to incline largely towards luxury. Sometimes in the midst of being the best, this particular market misses having the perfect 4-star hotels. There is a niche area in the market right below that luxury line that has been untapped, until now! We fit perfectly in that area.

Tell us about the concept of Swiss-Belhotel and its brand personality

It is an Asian group based in Hong Kong. This is a group that is developing rapidly making us the leader in the Asian market. Our new development is the strong focus of expansion in the Middle East. We have about 5 hotels in the pipeline, with already one in Kuwait and the other in Doha. Bahrain will be the third with more to come in the Middle East. We want this hotel to describe what our brand is all about- “Swiss hospitality with an Asian touch”.

With so much competition in Bahrain’s hospitality industry, what sets this hotel apart from the others?

Swiss-Belhotel has a strong product, with strong consistency and quality of service that is sufficient to standout. We strive to do things differently and love providing what the guest wants. It is important to be flexible when it comes to satisfying customers’ expectations on what a hotel can provide. Three unique facts of Swiss-Belhotel: 1. Our prime location 2. Large and spacious rooms 3. Our service, our international standard of quality.

What are your hopes and goals for Swiss-Belhotel?

Primarily, our main aim is to launch Swiss-Belhotel into the Bahrain market. We are positioning ourselves as a 4-star+; it is sort of at the entry level of a 5-star. We don’t pretend to be luxury, but we are definitely willing to place this new four-star international standout in everyone’s mind. As mentioned, we have a strong product. Our rooms are large and spacious with a sea view, a 360 angle for most of the rooms, placed at Bahrain’s prime location. Swiss-Belhotel has a number of amenities that one can compare to a 5-star, which also includes our innovative restaurants. *The 149-room Swiss-Belhotel is offering an opening rate of BHD55++ per night that consists of a rooftop bar and restaurant, lobby café, dining restaurant, outdoor swimming pool, Jacuzzi and conference facilities. STORIES OF A TRAILING SPOUSE

Maria Sorger

Maria Sorger shares tips on how to stave off the negative effects of relocating.

H

ere I am living on a beautiful tropical island, my house a few steps away from the sea; I sleep and wake to the sound and within sight of the ocean. An abundance of exotic fruits, fish and local Indonesian fare make up my daily diet. Miles of sandy beach beckon me to go jogging, or take a stroll as I pass local fishermen bringing in their daily catch while young children greet me with a ‘hello you English?’ and buskers try to sell me anything from freshly cut baby pineapples to pearls and sarongs. What more could one ask for? And yet, something is missing. Very often as trailing spouses move into their new role they feel a loss of identity. Prior to becoming trailing spouses they knew exactly who they were, what their role within their society was - be it an executive

in a multinational company, a lawyer or a teacher - whatever their job was they had a place in the ‘business world’. Now they find themselves in a strange land, days stretching ahead, lost as to what the next step should be. They can become frustrated or even resentful towards their partners who are working up the career ladder while they have left everything behind and feel they have gained nothing in return. Negativity sets in and they decide that everything was better before they moved abroad – which we all know is never the case.

“I did that for 4 years and found myself travelling to remote places in central Java which I would not have otherwise visited.”

Lombok pottery items

Survival of a trailing spouse depends on how to take the time spent in a foreign land and do something meaningful with it. I know it is easy to dish out advice – as one friend said to me, while she was overcoming cultural shock her former colleague became president of the company. However, you must forget what you had and focus on what you can do NOW. During my time in Indonesia I met several people who were in the furniture business and were coming here to select what they needed. Light bulb! Why not start an export business? I could source suppliers locally and export furniture and accessories from Indonesia. I did that for 4 years and found myself travelling to remote places in central Java which I would not have otherwise visited. I learned the language, stayed at small inns, ate local food at street ‘warungs’ (street side restaurants) and saw first-hand how stunning pottery is made on open fire using coconut shells. My work took me to tiny villages where everyone, including children, is involved in making the beautiful accessories that are found in so many western homes. I was invited to try my hand at weaving baskets out of ‘pandan’ leaves (leaves of a certain tropical plant) with often disastrous results! I was humbled by the villagers I met, people who have almost nothing but are always smiling. It was perhaps not the promotion I would have obtained had I remained in my previous job but certainly an enriching and rewarding experience that I will carry with me forever. VIVA-MUSS

Ali Fareed, one of Bahrain’s favourite bloggers joined VIVA during the MUSS programme in Manchester as part of wining the media competition.

It all started back in April when I got an invitation to cover a football tournament from which 22 boys and girls would be selected to go on the Manchester United Soccer Schools training program in Manchester, UK. As an added bonus the invited media/bloggers with the best and most creative social media coverage for the event were promised a seat to accompany the winners on their journey. Little did I know that lucky person would be me! I remember it was the end of the week and I was coming back from a long day at the office when I got the e-mail. It really caught me by surprise! It took a little while for the news to sink in. After that, I got my things in order, packed my suitcase, and two months later, I met the rest of the group at the airport ready to take off!

The winning students with the VIVA team

I was tasked with covering the MUSS training programme across the various social media channels. This was a great opportunity for me to interact with the boys & girls from the programme, see them develop their skills and grow as a team, get an in-depth look at MUSS training routine, and to top things off enjoy the beautiful city of Manchester. The MUSS program was nothing short of exciting. We would wake up early morning, have breakfast and head over to the training facility everyday from 8am until 3 in the afternoon. The coaches would train the youth on different football skills such as dribbling, passing,

maneuvering, shooting from various positions, teamwork and other vital skills. In order to motivate the players to give their best, every day the two top performers would be awarded points by the coaches and on the last day of training, a signed Manchester United team jersey was awarded to the best overall player! It’s a totally different thing when you attend an event for a couple of hours, take a few shots, then be on your way, than when you go on an immersive experience such as the MUSS training programme. Apart from covering the daily training, I had to play my part in supervising the participating youth & providing them with help and guidance when needed it. At one point I even got to join them in part of the training by helping the coach with the training routine. Being joined by other VIVA mentors was great. Each added to the experience by providing valuable input. It’s not easy to handle a big group of energetic youth but they made it look easy. We shared a few laughs along the way and I’m glad to say I returned from this trip with new friends.

CAR NEWS Toyota’s Citélib An innovative 100 per cent electric car-sharing scheme connected to public transport. You hear a lot about future mobility, smart cities, and other innovations designed to make cities and urban transport more pleasant and manageable in years to come. This dream is said to become a reality, in October, in Grenoble and the outlying area, making the French Alps city a pioneer in future mobility with assistance from Toyota. Toyota i-ROAD and COMS ultra-compact electric vehicles, and around 30 charging stations developed and managed by EDF’s subsidiary Sodetrel, will be open for service for a period of three years thanks to a unique partnership between the City and the Metropolitan Area of Grenoble, French energy company EDF, Japanese car maker Toyota and Citélib, a local car-sharing operator. Connected to the public transport system’s IT infrastructure, this new car-sharing scheme will complement Citélib, the current car-sharing service of Grenoble, by allowing users to pick up one of the small EVs at one location and drop it off at another. The project also aims to promote interconnectivity of public transport methods (trams, buses, trains) and a new type of personal mobility using small vehicles that don’t take up as much space as a normal car. NISSAN PATROL SALES HIKE

Nissan Patrol has notched up another proud feat in Bahrain. Performing against market odds, the SUV has achieved a 100 per cent increase in sales in the financial year 2013 compared to the year 2012. Nissan Patrol is a name synonymous with ruggedness; a legendary off-roader capable of going anywhere, anytime. With rich heritage spanning over 60 years, the Patrol is Nissan’s flagship SUV model and enjoys a passionate following in Bahrain and across the Middle East. As per the latest sales statistics, Nissan Patrol commands a commendable 28% of the top-end SUV segment in the Middle East. The model is developed specifically with the Middle East’s climate and terrains in mind and by Nissan engineers had invested over 13,000 hours in testing Patrol prototypes in the region. The successful launch of the all-new 2014 model is attributed to Nissan Patrol’s exceptional sales performance in Bahrain. The 2014 Nissan Patrol features the 3rd generation Around View Monitor with parking assist. Using four cameras, the monitor displays a bird’s eye view of the vehicle to help you park the Patrol even in tight spots. This is complemented by the availability of Back-up Collision Intervention which alerts the driver when a moving object is detected behind the vehicle when in reverse mode.

The Nissan Patrol has introduced many of the world’s leading automotive technologies for the first time. The Hydraulic Body Motion Control System kept the car flatter with less body roll during lane-changing and cornering, while delivering superb stability on rugged and sandy tracks. The Patrol employs an All Mode 4x4 system, which allows the driver to quickly switch between four drive modes: sand, on-road, snow and rock, with the flick of a switch. The new Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control functions also can be selected easily with the touch of a button for braking purposes on slope road surfaces. The all-new Nissan Patrol comes with a refreshed styling both inside and out. A vigorous new bumper design is matched with a muscular grille pattern with surrounding chrome at the front. LED headlamps with daytime running light and pop-up headlamp washer are also added to the new Nissan Patrol. In addition to the 6-speed manual transmission and 7-speed automatic on other grades, a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode is introduced on the entry-level XE grade. The 2014 Nissan Patrol’s price in Bahrain starts from BD 15,995. For a test drive call, Tel. +973 1773 2732 or visit the YK Almoayyed & Sons showroom in Sitra

THE ALL-NEW JAGUAR XE Technology package announced and world premiere date set.

Jaguar will unveil the latest addition to its sports saloon car family, the Jaguar XE in September this year. Jaguar will bring levels of innovation never seen before in this segment – with its lightweight construction expertise and sophisticated chassis technology in addition to the new family of Ingenium engines – all designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK. Built around an allnew, aluminium-intensive architecture, the XE combines thrilling performance, agile handling and precise, responsive steering, with outstanding levels of refinement. Integral Link Rear Suspension Unique to this segment, the Integral Link suspension delivers major benefits over conventional multi-link designs. By providing lateral and longitudinal stiffness, the integral link delivers sharp response and handling while retaining a refined, luxurious ride. Many components of the Integral Link suspension have been forged or hollow-cast in aluminium. These are the optimum production techniques to produce a strong, lightweight solution. Front Suspension based on F-TYPE Sports Car Mounted to a subframe with cast aluminium suspension towers, the XE’s double wishbone front suspension delivers the highest levels of handling and road holding. The advanced design is based on Jaguar’s flagship F-TYPE sports car and includes some key components designed to deliver Jaguar XFR-levels of stiffness. These ensure the XE enjoys a similar level of agility and ‘connected’ steering feel. Like the rear suspension, many components are made from cast and forged aluminium and some are produced using a patented process.

Class-leading Steering Feel Jaguar is renowned for its steering feel and this will now move to the next level as the XE becomes the first Jaguar to be equipped with the latest generation Electric Power Assisted Steering. Our latest software algorithms now allow much greater scope for tuning than hydraulic-based systems and deliver better quality steering feel. Other benefits include variable steering damping, ease of low-speed manoeuvring and the ability to adapt to Jaguar Drive Control settings. EPAS also enables a range of Active Safety and Driver Aid features. All Surface Progress Control Even with the best traction control, rear-wheel drive cars can struggle to pull away from rest on very slippery surfaces. For that reason, Jaguar has developed All Surface Progress Control, a completely new feature in its class. Developed with the input of decades of Jaguar Land Rover experience in off-road traction systems, ASPC can electronically gain traction with far less drama than a human driver can achieve. The system works like a low-speed cruise control to deliver optimum traction in the most slippery conditions without skidding and without the driver using the pedals. blogger We bring you the scoop on your favourite bloggers. This month, Anita Menon bakes a tray of glutenfree cookies with her daughter, Anumita.

Main Image: Blogger’s Own

As much as summer holidays bring a smile on your child’s face, it can be quite an anxious time for a parent. Baking is definitely an interesting way to keep your child busy and wouldn’t you love that extra help! I engage my daughter with some easy bakes like cookies, cupcakes and some simple cakes during her holidays. She enjoys the mixing and the measuring of ingredients and has a fair idea about what goes into the batter. The only parts where I take over are breaking eggs and handling the oven. Throughout the process, I simply supervise and guide her and when the baking is done, I can see the sense of accomplishment on her face as she proudly shares her cookies with her friends and family.

ChocolateChocolate Cookies Ingredients: • 450 gm Icing Sugar • 3/4 cup good quality Cocoa Powder • 1/2 tsp Salt

Method: • Preheat the oven at 350 degree F • Sieve the icing sugar to remove all lumps and to air it, in a large bowl. • Sieve the cocoa powder next and to this add the salt as well. Mix all the dry ingredients well. • In a separate bowl, break the eggs carefully and separate the yolks from the white. To the egg whites add vanilla essence and mix well. • Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and give it all a thorough mix, incorporating all the icing sugar and the cocoa powder well. • At this point, add the chocolate chips and incorporate it well. Place it in the freezer to chill for sometime while you prepare your baking tray for about 10-15 minutes or so. The batter shouldn’t be runny when you scoop it out on the baking tray. • Prepare a tray by laying a parchment paper on it. Spray it with oil to grease it well. • Bring the batter out of the freezer and remove small, coin-sized scoops and place it 2-3 inches away from each other. The batter, when it starts cooking begins spreading madly! • Place the baking tray on the center rack and let it bake for 13 minutes.

Blogger Bytes • 3 large Egg Whites (at room temperature) • 1 tbsp Vanilla Essence • 1 1/2 cups of semi-sweet Chocolate Chips

Anita with her daughter, Anumita & Inset: Chocolate-Chocolate Cookies

Best Blog – Kitchen & Dining

• Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for 5-7 minutes before transferring them elsewhere. They might be soft to touch but in some time they will be firm. For more of Anita’s recipes visit sliceofmylyfe.com

The Most Expensive Food in the World

nsive Fruit Most Experisbane Mangos

You’ve read about value for money food. Now learn about these 10 lavish alternatives to your everyday dishes.

st B First Harve ch BD1,584 ea

Now, before you get upset, though these items are unabashedly opulent, many of them were created for fundraising programmes. But why is a dish so expensive you ask? Well, there are a number of reasons: the chef sprinkled some diamonds, luxury pearls, or gold as a side attraction, such as the spoon, plate, goblet, or a decor. Yes, that’s cheating; you can always make anything the most expensive by throwing in some diamonds.

chef interview

Interviewing the chefs at …

Bayti The newly opened Middle Eastern, casual dining restaurant.

“...our Chocolate Shawarma made in conjunction with a local chocolatier is a 35kg white and dark chocolate roll. We shave the chocolate into freshly made crepe style sweet wraps and then serve with marshmallows, nuts and fruits. It’s a visual treat and is sure to be popular with the kids!” Favourite ingredients?

Seasoning. It is surprising what a little pinch of salt or a touch of olive oil can do to a dish.

Favourite dish at Bayti?

It has to be the Gourmet Shawarma which we have developed to evolve this Middle Eastern staple. The concept is fresh as are the all the sauces, marinades, proteins and bread prepared in the restaurant. Guests get to choose their bread and filling from a wide selection; we have added a few interesting ones like the seafood variant and a vegetarian option. Finally guests can select from five unique signature marinades. Jagath Nickson Jayasekara, Executive Chef and Anthony Gomes, Sous Chef

Cooking tips?

Always cook with passion and don’t be afraid to experiment. And like I said before, seasoning is the key to bring your dishes to life; always season your meat.

Guests’ favourite at Bayti?

The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive. Guests love that we have evolved many traditional dishes, that we have included some Bahraini dishes and that all our dishes are 100 per cent freshly prepared.

New ideas at Bayti?

As chefs we’re always looking for ways to re-invent, present and cook dishes. For instance, our Chocolate Shawarma made in conjunction with a local chocolatier is a 35kg white and dark chocolate roll. We shave the chocolate into freshly made crepe style sweet wraps and then serve with marshmallows, nuts and fruits. It’s a visual treat and is sure to be popular with the kids! For bookings call, Tel. + 973 1722 9778 or log onto Facebook: Bayti Bahrain or visit bflc.com.bh

Taste Life! John Ridley shares a family favourite.

explodingbakery.com

John R Ridley

T

he taste and smell of fresh strawberries, tomatoes growing on the vine, or wild garlic billowing in the meadows, revives memories of long summer holidays on my grandparent’s farm; where the wait for afternoon tea, sponge cake, baked that afternoon, and filled with cream and strawberries, was a time of anticipation. Our palettes change with the years; today I’d find the cake, so much anticipated in my youth, overly sweet, and lacking texture. I now spend much of my time in Italy; exploring farmers’ markets for local cheeses, olives, fruits, and lesser known vegetables; or sampling regional cuisine in family run cafes. Throughout the year, the markets are an ever-changing display of local and seasonal produce; agretti, a leafy green vegetable grown in marsh land, is much sought after during the spring and early summer; and in late autumn and early winter, fresh olives, citrus fruits and cheeses fill the stalls. Alongside, queues form around the growing numbers of artisan bakers and millers, displaying their breads and stone ground polenta and kamut flours - so often overlooked outside of Italy.

“Our palettes change with the years; today I'd find the cake, so much anticipated in my youth, overly sweet, and lacking texture.” Cooking with different flours requires patience and experimentation, polenta flour with a grainier texture than wheat, makes a wonderful cake; moist and fresh tasting, lemon polenta cake is a family favourite; served with berries and Greek yoghurt, it’s the perfect accompaniment to an autumn afternoon in the garden. Ingredients • 225 grams softened butter • 225 grams caster sugar 225 grams ground almonds 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • 3 lightly beaten eggs • Grated rind of two lemons Juice of 1 lemon 110 grams fine Polenta 1 teaspoon gluten free baking powder • Pinch of salt 23cm cake tin To serve Cooked berries Sour cream, or Greek yoghurt

Method: • Preheat oven to 160 degree C • Brush cake tin with melted butter and flour tin with rice flour. • In a large mixing bowl beat the butter until pale and soft, add the sugar and beat again until light and creamy. • Stir in ground almonds and vanilla extract. • Add the eggs, one at a time, and beat thoroughly between additions. • Fold in the lemon juice and rind, polenta, baking powder and salt. • Pour mixture into a prepared tin and bake for about 60 to 80 minutes until the top of the cake is a deep golden brown and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. • Remove from the cake tin and allow to cool on a wire rack. Serve in slices with berries and sour cream. John Ridley is a Bahrain based journalist, writer and broadcaster, visit his web site at www.johnridley.nu August 2014 | Bahrain Confidential | 117

Things to know Taxis

Taxis are easily available in the capital, Manama, and have meters but be sure to make the driver use the meter. 99% of drivers won’t switch on the meter and will try to charge you double the legal fare. Beware! Confidential Tip: BD1 per five minutes in the cab is the most you should pay for an un-metered journey. If traveling from the airport or busy taxi rank, add BD2/after midnight add BD1 to the total e.g. a 10 minute drive from the airport after midnight should cost you no more than BD5 (BD2 + BD2 + BD1= BD5). Taxis do use meters and companies may use similar rates.

Avoiding Offence

Generally speaking, very short skirts and tight midriff tops are frowned upon in public, although acceptable by hotel pools, in private clubs and on the beach. If visiting a mosque, cover the body well (women should ensure that arms and legs and hair are fully covered). Shoes should always be left outside the entrance.
