hink of What’s On Perth as like having a local in your pocket. We know our city inside and out and whether you’re a first-time visitor, or have lived here for years, What’s On Perth is an invaluable guide to what’s happening in the best capital city on earth (OK, we’re probably biased). As summer roars into our state, there are so many fun things to do with all the family. Our cover story is a good start; Perth’s Outback Splash has undergone something of a revamp with an incredible new collection of slides for thrill-seekers of all ages. The calendar of events is really ramping up now too, with plenty of outdoor concerts to enjoy, attracting stars from around the world including Fatboy Slim, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly and U2 There’s the weekly treat of a wonderful market by the seaside to enjoy at Scarborough -with more than 100 food and drink trucks and the traditional Scarborough Applause as the sun goes down, it’s really a

WELCOME celebration of all that’s great about summer in WA. Theatre and live performance is an important part of Perth’s DNA, so don’t miss the incredible line-up at 2020’s Perth Festival. If you’re heading out of town, we’ve got ideas about how to spend time in Mandurah, the Swan Valley and the Araluen Botanic Gardens which is offering a series of seasonal events to enjoy. We’ve put all our local knowledge into this guide, and recommend that you go forth and explore. If you have time, why not head south to Margaret River or north to the Coral Coast or Broome? It’ll be an experience you never forget. We hope you enjoy your stay. GABI MILLS, EDITOR

WHAT’S NEW

Edgewalk ers

Perth seems to be changing every day and it can be hard to keep up with what’s new in town. Fortunately, that’s where we come in . . .

Nature and nurture Ever wanted to combine a walking tour with deeply inspiring conversation and insight? Look no further than an Edgewalkers tour. Created and curated by Dr Erika Jacobson, when you walk with an Edgewalker guide, you aren’t just walking with a tour guide, you are walking with a philosopher, an artist, a writer, a passionate adventurer, and most importantly, they want you to feel like you are walking with a friend; someone who can offer you a unique perspective and sensitivity to the 8

whole experience. The company is currently offering multi-day walking tours along the Cape to Cape track and throughout the Fitzgerald Biosphere during the breathtaking wildflower season in WA’s south west. “If you’re keener on going even deeper, there are also retreats to be explored and a 30-day creativity habit created just for you. “By naming this business adventure Edgewalkers, I am conjuring the possibility of playing a role in bringing people closer to the edges

In what is sure to be a triumphant performance, The Cat Empire will prove the long-standing rumour that they headline major festivals all over the world because no band is brave enough to take the stage after them. Such is the power of their live show and world class musicianship, which sees their infectious, genreembracing anthems sweep audiences into a dancing, singing frenzy of waving arms and smiling faces. The Cat Empire will be joined by special guests Dan Sultan, Caravãna Sun and Grace Barbe. JANUARY POIROT STAR RETURNS TO PERTH David Suchet will once again entertain audiences around Australia with tales of his 50-year long career, in conversation with journalist Jane Hutcheon in the new year. Jane, who interviewed David in 2012, is looking forward once again to sitting down with the veteran star. “The show is so much more than either a retrospective or a classic inconversation,” she says. “It will be a feast for theatre lovers. David will perform some of his best-known and most-loved monologues from his repertoire.

There will be video and images. “My role will be like the thread in a string of pearls, bringing out his connection to the excerpts and unlocking the secrets of some of the most poignant turning points in David’s life and career.” Poirot and More: A Retrospective, Perth Concert Hall, January 18, 2pm and 7.30pm. FEBRUARY MISSY, MEG AND DIDIRRI BRING ALL THE FEELS One of Australia’s most dearly-loved singer/songwriter/performers, Missy Higgins is joined by he ever-ascendant Meg Mac and acclaimed new talent, Didirri. This show marks a special return to Kings Park & Botanic Garden for Missy. In February earlier this year, she was supporting good friends the John Butler Trio for two special shows, but on the second night, fell ill and wasn’t able to take the stage. So this event is Missy’s way of thanking her fans for their patience and support as well as shining a light on two other great Australian artists. “Back in February I had a careerfirst when I was forced to cancel my slot at the Coming Home Tour show in Perth with John Butler because I was sick as a dog,” Missy says. “At the time I was so

ALL THE STARS FLOCK TO FREO Laneway 2020 is set to be one of the biggest festivals to date, with a line-up guaranteed to whet the appetite. You’ll find The 1975, Charli XCX, teen wunderkind Ruel, Triple J faves Ocean Alley and DMA’s as well as multi-Aria nominated Tones and I all taking a spot during this epic day of music.  Laneway 2020, Esplanade Reserve and West End, Fremantle, February 9. Lowe will be touring with Los Straitjackets, a band known for channelling the peak years of the guitar instrumental, and for performing in the famous Lucha Libre fighting masks. Lowe, aka Basher, was not just producer for the cream of the British New Wave – Elvis Costello, Pretenders, Graham Parker, The Damned, Wreckless Eric – and had a burst of fame on the pop charts himself with songs such as Cruel To Be Kind, I Knew The Bride When She Used To Rock And Roll and that song about the dog who ate the film star, Marie Provost. In his current ‘second act’ as a silver-haired, tender-hearted but

sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal. Unmissable.  Nick Lowe’s Quality Rock & Roll Revue, starring Los Straitjackets, Astor Theatre, Perth, February 21.

WASO JOINS BEN ON TOUR Ben Folds is teaming up with WASO as part of a nationwide concert tour, performing at Perth Concert Hall on March 16 and 17 next year. Known for his musical versatility across the pop and classical genres, Folds has travelled the globe performing with some of the world’s best orchestras for over a decade. “I grew up playing in orchestras, so being on stage with one feels like home to me,” Ben said. “In these concerts, the orchestra is my band. When I perform with an orchestra, I tell audiences that I’m expressing myself through a different form than what they have come to expect in a rock show, a form that happens to be done by people who are among the best musicians on the planet and who do it all the time.” The multi-platinum selling artist first joined with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, fifteen years ago in a performance which included a live improvisation on stage with the full orchestra.  Ben Folds and WASO, Perth Concert Hall, March 16 and 17. ATTRACTION

AT PERTH’S

NEW WATERSLIDES

OUTBACK SPLASH

A thrilling new six-storey waterslide tower at Perth’s Outback Splash has opened in time for summer, featuring four of the country’s most breathtaking waterslides.

T

he new attractions at Perth’s Outback Splash are the height of excitement for thrill seekers, with two raft slides, an enclosed golden speed slide and WA’s fastest body slide, aptly named ‘The Wedgie’, where riders plunge to the ground at speeds of up to 75km/hour. The state-of-the-art waterslides have added a new dimension to the fun park, which has long been one of WA’s most popular outdoor entertainment attractions for a day out with family or friends. Located on the doorstep of the Swan Valley, only 30 minutes from the city, Perth’s Outback Splash caters for all ages in a fun and safe environment. In addition to the four new waterslides and its other water-based kids’ attractions (open from September to April), the park offers year-round fun, with mini golf, mazes, sensory play activities,

18

children’s playground, Australian animal experiences, picnic areas and two recently upgraded food outlets.

Slide Splash Action The Wedgie • Solo open tube body slide • Max speed - 75km/hour • Fastest body slide in WA • One of the tallest of its kind in Australia • Near-vertical drop

Gold Rush • Solo enclosed body slide • Max speed - 60km/hour • Named in homage to WA’s mining prospector history • One of the world’s most exhilarating slide paths • Glistening golden design

The Wall • Two-person raft slide • Mammoth quarter-pipe • Only one of its kind in WA • An almost free-fall drop into the 11-metre wall and near-vertical ascent

Blackout • Two-person raft slide • Feeling of intergalactic space travel • ‘Black hole’ slide experience • Mind-blowing lighting sequence • High-speed twists and turns • Epic ski-jump-style final drop

Fun Splash Facts

• There are 101 steps to the top of the new six-storey waterslide tower. For every three slides, you’ll earn bigger bragging rights than climbing Jacob’s Ladder (which has a mere 242 steps). • The only way to get from the top to the bottom of the new waterslide tower faster than The Wedgie, is to bungee jump! • Look familiar? The Wall is based on all the best features of ‘The Boomerang’ – the No. 1 slide experience at Bali’s Waterbom Park, recently voted the top

waterpark in Asia. The Wall is a slight variation, with some improvements added. • The Gold Rush is a slide named in homage to WA’s mining history and the inspirational prospectors seeking their fortune in the 1890s. The translucent golden design is visually stunning and one of the most exhilarating slide paths in the world. • The Blackout is the closest thing to intergalactic space travel in Perth, with a sequence of pitch black, disorientating colours and mind-blowing natural light effects. Thor’s Bifrost bridge, Willy Wonka’s boat ride and Dr Who’s Tardis don’t compare to this ‘black hole’ slide experience. • The new slide tower gives excellent shade for riders, with a solid 20-metre-high roof providing almost full shade all day. It also includes a giant UV-rated shade sail over the queuing area and a part-shaded stairwell when ascending the tower. • The four new waterslides combine to be 489 metres long – that’s almost half a kilometre of twisting, turning, heart-pumping slide action. MARCH Hometown hero After selling out his national tour in

record breaking time and receiving rave audience reviews across the country earlier this year, internationally renowned, award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, Tim Mincnin is coming back, with BACK in 2020. Back was Tim’s first Australian tour since returning to the country after almost a decade of living overseas and was seen by almost 69,000 Australians after a seven year absence from the stage. The long-awaited tour also saw him pick up a prestigious Helpmann Award for Best Australian Contemporary Concert. In March 2020, BACK will make two new stops in Hobart and Newcastle and see return dates in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne. BACK is billed as “Old Songs, New Songs, F*** You Songs”, hinting at a set list of material from all corners of Minchin’s eclectic – and often iconoclastic – repertoire. Minchin has been celebrated globally for writing the music and lyrics for “Matilda the Musical”, which has gone on to become one of the most acclaimed musicals of the last 20 years, winning masses of awards. It continues to run in the West End and has already played in over 50 cities worldwide. Visit timminchin.com for tickets.

Bangarra Dance Theatre

EVENT

Perth Festival set to ignite the City of Lights On a bedrock of Indigenous culture, Perth Festival 2020 will be welcoming everyone to a glorious summer celebration of people and place.

M

ore than 250 events across theatre, music, dance, opera, film, visual arts and literature and ideas – many of them free including the much-anticipated 10km AC/DC tribute on the Canning Highway – will dazzle audiences from near and far from February 7 to March 1. Mavis Staples, Neil Gaiman, Meow Meow, Rufus Wainwright, Kate Tempest, Bryony Kimmings, Paul Kelly – the 2020 Festival artists are as wondrous as the 14 brand new Festival commissions that celebrate such diverse figures as Gurrumul, Philip Glass, Beethoven and Bon Scott. New artistic director Iain Grandage’s four annual programs on Noongar Boodjar will capture an everexpanding orbit of stories from the local to the global. “Perth Festival 2020 will be a huge, euphoric celebration of Perth, Western Australia – it’s my home town and I love it,” Iain says. “We will be introducing a sparkling new Festival hub, City of Lights, including our new contemporary music venue Chevron

22

Lighthouse, as well as welcoming the return of the much-loved Chamber Music Weekend and premiere exciting new theatre, dance and music works made especially for you by talented local artists working with artists from across the country and around the world.” The theme of Karla – a Noongar term meaning fire and by extension country and home - is at the heart of the Perth Festival 2020. Future Festivals will sweep beyond Karla’s warm glow across the Bilya (River) and Wardan (Sea) and finally out into the vast expanse of Djinda (the cosmos, the stars). “Our Festival is a campfire for sharing stories and inviting belonging,” Iain says. “In celebrating place, and the depth and range of Australian indigenous culture, our entire first week is dedicated to First Nations performances. “This is a first for any major Australian international arts festival and a celebration of Australia’s unique voice in the world.” Visit perthfestival.com.au.

BESK, WEST LEEDERVILLE

S

pending a couple of hours in Besk is like having a grown-up’s play date with 200 people at your best friend’s house. One where you can amuse yourself with all the toys, wallow in the joy of being with good mates and marvel at elegantly rustic surroundings designed to celebrate life – friendships, a tipple or two, watching the footy, reading the paper and food that hits the spot – almost. The typical pub staples coming from an open kitchen where the chefs are as much a part of the party as the punters, are not the main reason people are swarming into this vast newlyopened neighborhood bar on a come hither strip in West Leederville. It’s a bar. No, it’s a bottleshop. No, it’s a pub. Whatever, it’s pure genius by owners Elliot Moore (Mane Liquor) and Ben Braham (Braham Architects). Apart, that is, from leathery kingfish tostadas ($19), dense house-made foccacia and lacklustre labneh ($14) which let the food side of things down slightly, considering they are right next door to Mary Street Bakery. But a beef burger ($22) made with

32

Angus beef and a sensuous brioche bun brought back a sense of well being, thanks to a tender, pink-in-the-middle patty cooked lovingly over the charcoal fired grill. The accompanying crisp, fat chips – salted to perfection – released a dopamine wallop and cried out for another Coopers Sparkling Ale ($9). Woodlands Chardonnay ($24, 750 ml) served in a carafe added to the sense of comfort pervading this vast space which wins the award for best street presence of any venue around. The best, as in four shopfronts rejigged

to create a venue which is already something of a landmark to welcome local residents and train commuters – and dogs – with equal warmth. There are outside nooks where you can feel the sun on your back while you sink a craft beer. There’s a wine room you can get lost as you browse a rotating selection of well-chosen labels to drink in house (for a small corkage fee) or take away. No wonder its Subiaco neighbours on the other side of the tracks are seething with envy. Besk, 264 Railway Parade, West Leederville. Aperitivo with a strong focus on local vermouths and Australian botanicals will be offered in the early afternoon, and as the light fades, Sunset Hour will feature a songbird-inspired cocktail and an accompanying hors d’oeuvre. Songbird’s signature drinks will be served with large blocks of ice carved to order - something of a first for the city famous for its long, hot summers. FEED ME If early reviews are anything to go by, then they are indeed onto something of a winner. We recommend putting yourself in the hands of the kitchen with the $55 per head feast option. One of the city’s hottest chefs - Danny Sanchez (ex-Hadiqa, The Flour Factory) is in charge, and you’ll be treated to a generous spread of six courses to enjoy from the menu, including perhaps shocking pink beetroot dip with heavenly pitta, dinky chicken and harissa pizzas with the crispiest base, and one of the most delicious Porterhouse steaks we’ve ever tasted. Peru-born Chef Danny has criss-crossed the Mediterranean - which explains some notable Moroccan and Spanish influences - to produce an unbelievably distinctive and delicious menu. The party crowd will love the $12 bottomless fries option (for an hour), while for cocktail lovers, there’s the $99 40

LEGENDARY HOTEL IN NEW HANDS The Subiaco Hotel has new owners for the first time in half a century. Dave Allan and Lawson Douglas recently took over the Subiaco favourite from the Monaghan family. The business partners own two historic landmark hotels in Western Australia, the Rose Hotel in Bunbury and the Exchange Hotel in Kalgoorlie, which they have meticulously restored to become vibrant, community venues in the local bar and restaurant precincts, employing more than 120 people. “Like the Rose Hotel and the Exchange Hotel, the Subiaco Hotel is a much-loved local institution with a long, rich history and we are proud to become only the second owners of the property and continue the tradition of one of Perth’s favourite pubs,” Dave said. “It is a grand building with great charm and an important Perth landmark, dating from 1897. We don’t plan to make significant changes, other than enhancing what is there and ensuring our offering is in line with the market.” The business partners said they looked forward to working with the new wave of operators now establishing businesses in an evolving local entertainment zone which painted an exciting future and a renaissance for Subiaco. BAR HOP

By Sloane Carvell

Joe’s Juice Joint W

hen my editor suggested a review of the number one dive bar in the world so many thoughts ran through my head. Firstly, we’re number one in the world for something? Go us! Secondly, a dive bar hasn’t been my scene since uni days (they were some years back, for those wondering). Third, a quick check online to make sure a dive bar was what I still understood it to be (because often words change meaning over time where things with negative connotations are now the opposite) confirms what I thought. A ‘dive’, according to Merriam-Webster, is ‘a shabby and disreputable establishment’, the same meaning as I still expected. So it was with some trepidation that I donned my faux leather pants and headed out with the best friend for drinks on a Saturday night to get to the bottom of just how Joe’s Juice Joint in Northbridge attained this worldwide gold star status according to the global travel company ‘Big 7 Travel’ list of the world’s best dive bars. We head down a graffitied laneway behind William Street and in through a dodgy doorway manned by friendly

48

doormen, and here we are, about to discover Joe’s Juice Joint. Down a peeling band poster-plastered stairway you enter a dimly lit, dark and moody bar with booths and tables, Elvis pinball machines and rock music. The bar shines with bottles of American bourbon and a huge range of whiskeys. There are cocktails like the Tequilaquarium, served in a fishbowl for sharing, frozen Long Island cocktails, rum and whiskey cocktails, craft beers, wine;, a plethora of booze choices in fact. I order a delicious whiskey sour and a bowl of complimentary unshelled peanuts was delivered too; we settle into one of the

Joe’s is everything you want from a classic dive bar

Verdict:

Dive in for a great place to party, drink whiskey and enjoy late night rock vibes. Grab a group of friends and a Tequilaquarium. Hours: Weds – Thurs 8pm – 2am, Fri to Sun 8pm – 4am Price: $2 Cheezels, $10-20 burgers and dirty fries, cocktails start at $14 booths. Thanks to that ever-present rock music, this is not the place for quiet and meaningful conversation but we can hear each other talk at least. There is a small food menu of cheeseburgers and fried chicken burgers, dirty fries, and chicken wings.

There are also Cheezels for $2 a bowl and I’m not going to lie, whiskey and Cheezels is life-changing. The music ranges across rock genres from grunge rock to some classic Pink Floyd to Bon Jovi rock anthems and a sneaky favourite from The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army. The bar fills quickly with groups of guys on boys’ nights out, a hen’s party, and couples on dates. The vibe is fun and the whiskey selection is hot. Joe’s is everything you want from a classic dive bar; I dove in and loved its late night vibes. If you’re in Northbridge it’s definitely worth a visit to end your night. Just don’t forget to order the Cheezels.

Since their legendary Last Stand way back in 1983, Cold Chisel has reformed for just four national tours, but they almost always played indoors and those gigs didn’t happen over the holidays. Now, for the first time ever, this legendary Australian band will be playing some very special outdoor shows in Australia for BY THE C, including Fremantle and Busselton. You’ve never seen anything like it before. You’ll never see anything like it again. It’s called the Blood Moon Tour 2020 - named after a rare lunar eclipse where the sun, earth and moon all briefly align before returning to their own orbits. R OUT ABOUT ON ROTTNEST ISLAND

ottnest Island is Western Australia’s very own island getaway, featuring a casual atmosphere, picturesque scenery and some of the world’s finest beaches and bays. Best of all, it’s located just 19 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle. It’s a special place for Western Australians and a popular destination for interstate and international visitors. Mediterranean-style climate and Indigenous flora and fauna of this Island provide the backdrop to a special holiday experience. Take a day trip to Rottnest (or Rotto as the locals call it), or book a stay for a few days or more. It’ll be a memorable part of any visit to Perth.

DON’T MISS . . . See food and eat it ...by Bev Ligman Do yourself a summer favour. Grab your bestie, boyfriend or partner and get yourself over to Rotto for Rottnest Cruises’ Wild Seafood Experience. The day starts as any day to Rotto should, jumping aboard a SeaLink ferry to get to the island. Then of course there’s the obligatory ‘snack’ pie from the Rotto Bakery to line your stomach and by 11am you’re all set to go on the seafood cruise of a lifetime. The Wild Seafood experience is fully interactive – they’ve put the cray pots out, but you have to haul them back in and catch your own lunch. It’s hard work – but let’s face it you’ve already had a couple of Champagnes by this time so you’re basically up for anything! Once lunch is caught (and everyone gets a go at pulling up a cray pot) it’s time for a swim off the back of the boat. Delightful. My bestie and I went on a blisteringly hot 40-degree day so we couldn’t wait to throw ourselves into the deep blue sea and cool down. Then just when you think things couldn’t get any better, you’re served fresh oysters and a Champagne as you dry off from your dip. Yep this, my friends, is living. 80

The Rottnest Cruise staff are brilliant, they knew my bestie and I both got seasick so they made sure to tell us where not to sit on the boat when it was rocky and they also filled up our glass whenever they were empty. Definitely our kind of people. For lunch a long table is set up on the boat and you tuck into fresh crab, prawns, pickled octopus, seafood tacos and a whole bunch of amazing salads. You definitely won’t leave this cruise hungry. Then the crays are cooked on the BBQ right in front of you. Honestly, if they were any fresher, .you’d slap their face. Whether you’re a tourist, a local who hasn’t been to Rotto for a while or you’re showing someone WA’s best bits, the Wild Seafood Experience is the perfect activity. The cruise itself is only three hours long so you’re not on a boat the whole day and, as, there’s only about 15 people on board, it never feels cramped or crowded. And because you don’t go out that far or stay out that long, it really is suitable for all ages, so why not make it a family day out? The Wild Seafood Experience is $175 for adults and $125 for children. To book visit rottnestcruises.com/

See the sealife From January 2019, experience Rottnest’s pristine, crystal waters from above and below on a glass bottom sea kayaking tour. Your tour will start with a short bus ride to the calmest bay on the island arriving asthe guides unload the kayaks, fit everyone for a life jacket and set off on an adventure. Paddle into secluded bays, inaccessible to those on the land and too shallow for those on a boat. Even if you have been going to Rottnest for years, you have probably never seen it like this. The clear floored kayaks also offer guests a window into the world below. See colourful marine life, coral, and fascinating reef formations while staying (relatively) high and dry. The glass bottom sea kayaking tours are for those looking for an active, yet relaxed experience of the island. Yes, you will need your sense of adventure, but you do not need to be an elite athlete. If you have decent upper body strength and are capable of sitting in a small craft for two hours, then you can do this.Book your tour at rottnestkayak.com.au or at the Rottnest Island Visitors Centre.

ON THE BEATEN TRACK

SUMMER TRACKS There are lovely trails to be discovered while in Perth and its surrounds. Here are some which are especially beautiful in summer, thanks to our friends at Trails WA.

F

irst things first if you’re planning on exploring a walk trail this summer; here are a few tips to remember: • Don’t overestimate your abilities. Choose a trail that is suitable for the least fit or youngest member of your walking group. • Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day. Start early to skip the heat. • Tell someone where you are walking and what time you expect to be back. • Drink plenty of water before, during and after your walk. In hot weather, bring at least 2 litres of water per person. • Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen whenever you’re outside walking. • Wear sturdy, comfortable and enclosed shoes. Save the thongs for the beach.

86

• Snakes are more active during summer. Watch where you’re putting your feet and avoid walking through long grass. If you do spot a snake, leave it alone. Move away quickly and calmly.

ON THE RECORD with Spacey Jane’s CALEB HARPER

A

s most bands do, Caleb, Kieran, Ashton and Peppa came together through blooming friendships and lucky connections. A debut gig in Caleb’s dad’s backyard kicked it all off and in the year that followed, Freo’s very own garage pop outfit Spacey Jane went from backyards to bright lights. They’ve since shared the stage with

92

Alex Lahey, The Jungle Giants and more, along with Australian festival appearances at Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Yours & Owls and WA Day’s SOTA Festival, and have just been nominated for a J Award. WILCO/YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT It’s probably Wilco’s best-known album but I think it really is the most

special. Hailing from rhythmic, guitar heavy alt folk, the album is wildly experimental in lots of ways and was a huge risk for the band. I think Jeff Tweedy’s raw storytelling (heartbreak and Illinois) along with Glenn Kotche’s amazing drumming are my favourite parts of the album. ARCTIC MONEY/WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT’S WHAT I’M NOT I listened to this album almost exclusively for the entirety of my first summer out of school. I had my own car and just tore around Geraldton with it blasting on CD. The energy it gave me was like nothing I had felt before from music, I was 17 years old in rural WA but I could feel grimy Sheffield and I wanted to be a part of it badly. THE STROKES/IS THIS IT I watched The Strokes at Splendour 2016 just after Spacey Jane played our first ever show. This album sound tracked a period of beginning to love music again. I’m obsessed with Nick Valensi’s stand out yet simple riffs - I think his work is really underrated when people talk about The Strokes. Of course, Julian’s the star of the show, he’s the one artist I most want to meet. KINGS OF LEON/YOUTH AND YOUNG MANHOOD My first introduction to Kings of Leon was through the documentary, Talihina Sky. Being raised in a strict religious household myself, I felt some kinship to the story. The album is so biting - it just drew me in at 16/17 and made me want to make thrashing six-string rock. Still Running was inspired heavily by that album.

ARCADE FIRE/ THE SUBURBS The Suburbs always scared me a little bit, the concepts throughout never really made sense to me as a kid but I could understand the tone. Win’s haunting light voice and dissonant piano sounds create an arid soundscape that reminds me of many west coast road trips. ALVVAYS/ALVVAYS I ran out of mobile data about four days into a seven-week trip overseas and this was one of the only albums I had downloaded on my phone. Molly’s beautiful melodies over big reverb guitar sounds really transport me to another place when listening - it’s the perfect travel music. Anytime I listen to that record I can clearly picture long walks through forests in southern France and the Swedish countryside. THE SMITHS/THE QUEEN IS DEAD Morrissey has the greatest male voice I’ve ever loved, and Johnny Marr is the father of guitar-based indie music in my humble opinion. I think The Queen is Dead is the best combination of those two things. I’m not a very broody person but this album nearly brought on a goth stage. PREFAB SPROUT/STEVE MCQUEEN Ashton and I first heard this album during our first time in a recording studio. It was the first time I’d ever really appreciated how special vinyl could sound especially well preserved 80’s original pressings. When I show this album to people they tell me it’s Yacht Rock - but that’s why I love it. Catch Spacey Jane on February 9, Laneway Festival Fremantle Esplanade Reserve and West End, or their headline tour at Fremantle Arts Centre on November 23. 93

Ngaire Pigram

INTER VIEW ... by Helen Ganska

BRAN NUE

SHOW

One of Australia’s favourite musicals has a fresh new cast, same important message.

A

s idyllic a place as tropical Broome sounds it hasn’t always been a paradise for its Aboriginal people. 1960s Western Australia, the setting for Jimmy Chi’s coming-ofage musical comedy Bran Nue Dae, could have made for a dark slice of history because of the trauma facing Aboriginal families. But instead this first ever Aboriginal musical goes on a journey of discovery with young Willie who hitchhikes his way back from mission school to Broome, seeking to win the heart of the girl he left behind. The Pigram family, musical icons of Broome play a big part in bringing Bran Nue Dae back to the stage 30 years after its 1990 debut.

94

Speaking from Broome, Ngaire Pigram, dancer, singer, writer and director, takes on the role of Aunty Theresa in this new production which reprises the roles of many of the actors, including Ernie Dingo who starred in both the stage version and the film. Ngaire, mother of two young adult sons, 23-year-old Bojesse, who is also part of the ensemble and 19-year-old apprentice boilermaker, Seth, has been performing professionally for around 15 years. “I love it and I’ve never really wanted to do anything else,” she says, particularly growing up in a family who love to perform as well in a creative family. Ngaire is a proud Yawuru/Wajarri woman whose Wajarri maternal grandmother came from the Murchison

where she was taken as part of the Stolen Generation and grew up at Sister Kate’s. Her Yawuru father is part of the Broome mob. “Being able to say that means a lot to me, knowing who my people are and where we come from. “Although there is still a lot I have to learn about my mother’s side because of the Stolen Generation,” she says. While Ngaire doesn’t believe celebrating 30 years of Bran Nue Dae puts pressure on the cast she says it definitely gives them energy which creates a sense of excitement to be bringing it back. “We feel complete and utter excitement and pride to be a part of it. “So many of us that are connected to it are a part of it and it’s a privilege to bring it to today’s society. “Although there is a little bit of pressure, because the first time around 30 years ago it blew everyone away as the first Indigenous musical.” Ngaire says she saw the first Bran Nue Dae theatre production while living in Perth when she was about 10 years old and it blew her away. The Pigram family is heavily involved in this production of Bran Nue Dae. Her sister and father, son Bojesse, cousin Danielle, nephew and niece, an uncle and several others are all involved in the production. She grew up with the three original members of the band, Kuckles, Stephen Pigram, Michael Mavromatis and Jimmy Chi, listening to them play. Her sister Naomi Pigram is Associate Director for the musical, something Ngaire says makes her very proud. “I have total faith in her ability to bring to this production what she knows in her heart is what Uncle Jimmy would have wanted. “He’s up there smiling, I’m pretty sure, or laughing. “It’s definitely a family affair and I’m very excited about how that’s going to be. It feels right.” Ngaire had a part in the film as

a dancer, but has done stage work before so is not worried about the transition from film to stage. “There’s a very different energy when you are doing film to live performance. It’s almost an instant high from the gratification you get each and every night with live performance. “To tell this story over and over each night is going to be very moving for me. “Even in the auditions, singing the songs got me choked up because I know how much it means to my people, how much truth is speaks and

Ernie Dingo

where Uncle Jimmy was coming from when he wrote it. “It’s going to be a roller coaster ride, but a very enjoyable one.” Ngaire is excited to be taking on the role of Aunty Theresa, a strong woman who has been through much. “She finds her place with God and he inspires her to make the changes she needs and I think anybody, no matter who they see that inspiration through, whether it’s God or someone they know, to be able to do that is an amazing thing. “I like that she has been through so much, but still triumphs.” Bran Nue Dae opens in Perth at the Regal Theatre from February 6.
