LABOR DELIVERING $140 MILLION FOR HEAVY VEHICLE REST AREAS

For the first time in ten years, a Labor Budget was presented to the people of this country in October.

A budget which is responsible, right for the times and ready for the future.

The Albanese Labor Government understands that making good decisions now is critical to making sure no one is held back, and no one is left behind.

I am so proud to say that this Government is delivering on our commitment to truckies through a $80 million commitment to new and refreshed rest areas. This funding is in addition to the $60 million already set aside to fund rest areas and supplements the existing Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program funding.

The $80 million commitment the Labor Party took to the election brings the total commitment in dedicated funding for heavy vehicle rest areas to $140 million.

In delivering the Rest Area Program, the Government will be working side by side with truckies and industry experts to deliver a suite of heavy vehicle rest areas across the country. Truckies will be at the table, providing their expert advice for the targeted rest area projects.

On top of this, the Government has committed $12.4 billion to infrastructure this financial year and $55.1 billion dollars over the next four financial years.

The funding the Government has committed to through the budget will include upgrades to freight routes heavily used by truck drivers across the country – from the Bruce Highway in Queensland, through to the Bass Highway in my home state of Tasmania.

We’re continuing to invest in the Roads of Strategic Importance (ROSI) initiative which supports the upgrade of key freight routes, and to help connect regional businesses to local

and international markets, and better connect regional communities.

The ROSI initiative is ensuring our key freight roads efficiently connect areas of regional and remote economic activity to ports, airports and other transport hubs. ROSI is delivering works such as road sealing, flood immunity, strengthening and widening, pavement rehabilitation, bridge and culvert upgrades and road realignments.

We know that the improved access provided through the ROSI initiative is making work easier and, importantly, safer for truckies by improving freight routes you travel often.

and valuing the talent, potential and contribution of all workers in Australia.

This is a responsible budget, a budget that starts to clean up the mess the Liberals left behind and begins to build a better future, a future that all Australian’s deserve.

On top of the budget measures, during budget week the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Tony Burke, introduced the ‘Secure Jobs, Better Pay’ Bill.

The Bill proposes new laws around work flexibility which will mean that parents of school aged children, carers and workers over 55 are able to negotiate more flexible hours.

Under the Bill, if an employer refuses a request for roster flexibility, an employee can seek the assistance of the Fair Work Commission, first by conciliation and then, if necessary, by arbitration.

Further, the Albanese Labor Government has committed $65 million per year through the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. The Program provides funding for projects which work to make our most utilised freight routes safer for truckies, and other road users. Infrastructure is critical to building the nation we all want. Through the Budget the Albanese Government is investing in infrastructure that delivers the best outcomes for the Australian people now and into the future.

The Budget takes an important first step in ensuring the Commonwealth’s infrastructure spending is responsible, affordable and sustainable.

Further, the Bill opens up access to multiemployer bargaining by giving workers performing work in workplaces with common characteristics the ability to negotiate for the one collective agreement. Importantly, the Fair Work Commission will decide on whether multiemployer bargaining is appropriate and in the public interest.

Our Government recognises the importance of the TWU’s ‘Safe Rates, Save Lives’ campaign. The ‘Secure Jobs, Better Pay’ Bill aims to lift wages and standards across the country; from transport through to early childhood education, aged care and beyond.

I am immensely proud that Minister Burke, and Labor, has introduced this legislation and look forward to seeing it through to being enshrined in law.

From a budget that puts working people first, through to legislation that will make real, meaningful change to the lives of millions of Australians, the Albanese Labor Government is working towards the future you deserve.

We’ve been working hard to clean up the 10 years of mess the Liberals left behind. We know we can’t clean it all up overnight, but we are working every day to build a better future for Australia.

The Albanese Government is also delivering on its commitments to support truck drivers. Heavy vehicle drivers in Australia deserve access to the facilities they need when they need them, just like every other worker. That’s why it was wonderful to see the Albanese Labor Government’s first Budget deliver an additional $80 million for new and upgraded heavy vehicle rest areas across the country, bringing dedicated heavy vehicle rest area funding up to $140 million over 10 years.

Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Senator Carol Brown announced on the 1st of December that the Albanese Government would deliver on that commitment and a steering committee would be established to guide the process and give truckies a voice in shaping the projects which are funded through this initiative.

The membership of long haul truckies and their expertise on this committee will be crucial. The work of the committee will be extremely important in making sure that we get the design and location of new rest areas right. Never before have truck drivers been consulted like this and I am very proud that the Albanese Government has delivered on this commitment.

As a former truck driver with over forty years’ experience and who still drives trucks to raise money for charity, it is an honour to Chair this committee and work with truck drivers and industry to deliver projects under the Heavy Vehicle Rest Area initiative.

Prior to the election, we also committed that projects would be guided by advice from a committee that would be comprised of truck drivers so we make sure funding goes to where it is most needed.

In early December, drivers had an opportunity to express their interest in being a part of the committee with applications being assessed by the Department. The committee will commence its important work in early 2023.

Anna Stewart Program 2022 A Great Success Report

ThisSeptember I was lucky enough to be nominated by the TWU to attend The Anna Stewart memorial project at Unions WA. It was a week-long program for women unionists held in Hay St Perth (as opposed to my usual PUD truck driving job which was a welcome change.)

We attended various workshops aimed at growing skillsets and empowering women in the union movement.

Many prominent women ran workshops on improving mental health, gaining skillsets for delegates training and public speaking seminars to name a few. We also visited the Industrial Commission and Parliament House. Participants were invited to attend their own union office for a day.

The program was attended by around 20 women representing different unions, from nurses, lab technicians, aviation workers, and police. One lady was a high school maths teacher who flew in from Karratha. She said it was an eye-opening experience to see the involvement of some of these activists.

One of my favourite days of the program was getting to spend a day with your union. The relatively new headquarters is vibrant office with lots of room for the big rigs to be able to park out the front.

First on the agenda was tagging along with our organiser Charlie Nichols who always seems to be volunteering me to do stuff. Off we went to Star Track to sit in on a consultation with management regarding their plans for the Christmas/peak season. Rod, their delegate, came in on his time off to attend the meeting. The members out there are very fortunate to have such a dedicated delegate representing them. Was a pretty cool experience to be able to sit in on what you normally wouldn’t get a chance to and see first hand how proceedings go.

Next, back to head quarters and Rose (another member attending the program representing Swissport) and I were off with Chris Gibbs who is the organiser for the bus drivers.

We visited the depot in O’Connor and along the way chatted about some of the struggles the bus drivers are up against. I have the utmost respect for bus drivers. I think it’s a tough gig and they should absolutely be better compensated.

A couple of ladies from management sat with us to chat about their relationship with the union.

I also really enjoyed visiting parliament. I have only ever been on the steps for a rally, not inside. We all stood on the steps for a photo opportunity where it took all my might not to chant, “When I say union, you say power!”

I wore my steel caps and TWU hoodie and wasn’t sure they’d let me in for not meeting the dress code. I got through security and they did let me in.

Really regal, stunning interior, something from another era. A panel of prominent women in politics sat with us to have an informal question time, giving an honest account of navigating parliament as a female and how they have been fitting into a system that was never designed for them in a hope to pave the way for women in the future.

We had lunch and continued a candid chat while enjoying some of the best mini scones, jam and cream ever. After this we sat up in the gallery to view some parliament question time.

We finished up with some reflection at Solidarity Park opposite Parliament House. The significance of the site is when in 1997 the union had parked a caravan on Parliament

grounds as “First Aid van”. They returned and it had been towed and left across the road on vacant land. This became a Workers Embassy throughout the protests against the industrial relations third wave legislation on which we were given a firsthand account. Apparently during the protests truck convoys circled Parliament House.

Today it is a monument to trade union workers who died at work. Also, a special monument to Mark Allen, a CFMEU organiser who tragically lost his life on a building site as he attended to warn workers about an unsafe roof they were on.

The Anna Stewart memorial project was first initiated in 1984 in Victoria (one year after Anna Stewart’s tragic death aged just 36). Traditionally a two week internship consisting of two days at trades hall with the rest to be attended at the unions.

Anna worked as union official in the 1970s. While in the late stages of her third pregnancy she spearheaded the first campaign for maternity leave.

Later Anna joined Victorian Vehicle Builders Federation in 1975, advocating for childcare facilities in car plants. Sexual harassment was also something Anna was able to have acknowledged as an industrial issue leading campaigns against sexual harassment. These were some of her accomplishments. To this day women from all over Australia are being empowered through Anna’s legacy and people who attend to project are referred to as ‘the Anna’s’. It was a pleasure and honour to meet so many remarkable trail blazers in the union movement. The commonality being most never expected to end up on the path they found.

Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations milestone and opportunities for women in transport.

TheWA State Government’s $6.1 million Heavy Vehicle Driving Operations Skill Set has hit a key milestone, with 232 people now employed through the program, which started in April 2021, and more gaining employment as they receive their licences. The aim is to train up to 1,000 workers to combat skills shortages in WA’s transport industry.

Developed in collaboration with industry, and in response to the truck driver shortage emphasised during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Australian-first program provides theoretical and practical hands on truck driving experience at the state of the art Driver Risk Management facility located at the Perth Airport.

Around 30 per cent of participants have been women, and this has has led to the development of a tailored course specifically for a women-only cohort now also available.

We’re seeing a strong interest from women wanting to join the industry and the trend is very welcome news, as so many employers are keen to employ more female drivers because of the different skills and positive attributes they bring. Having a women only cohort and the supportive structure of the course, means it is also perfect for Women who feel that they may need time to build their confidence.

• The six-week course is currently available in metropolitan areas through Central Regional and South Regional TAFEs, in collaboration with industry.

• D ue to the program’s success, it has now been expanded to regional areas with a 10week course running in the South West.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti says “Western Roads Federation and the Transport Workers’ Union approached the Premier, the Minister for Education and Training,

and myself in 2020 asking us to create a dedicated training course for truck drivers, and it’s fantastic to see that this program is exceeding expectations. It is an excellent example of collaboration with industry to help match jobseekers looking to boost their employability with an industry in need of skilled workers. Participants are mentored and supported on the path to employment, connecting them to industry employers that are looking for workers before they’ve even completed their training.”

The skill set is fee-free for eligible students, and the Practical Driving Instruction Training and Assessment and licencing costs are $500 for concession students and up to $1,250 for non-concession students.

The program aims to train 500 new workers in Heavy Rigid (HR) licences, and upskill 500 existing workers from HR licences to Heavy Combination and/or Multi-Combination licences to combat skills shortages.

A MUST-READ FOR OWNER-DRIVERS says

Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Amendment Bill 2022: More Power for Family Businesses

TheTransport Workers Union has been campaigning to increase the powers of owner operators in the transport industry. For too long WA Owner drivers have been subjected to taking rates that are not safe or sustainable. Take it or leave it will no longer be the norm.

And the clients and economic employers who use owner operators to transport their goods based on the lowest price. Will no longer be the norm

Fuelling a race to the bottom forcing owner operator into undercutting each other. The Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Amendment Bill 2022 will go a long way to stopping that.

In 2008, the TWU was instrumental in the State Government implementing the RFTIT (Road Freight Transport Industry Tribunal) established under the Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Act of 2007. The Tribunal seeks to promote a safe and sustainable road freight transport industry by regulating the relationship between persons who enter into contracts to transport good in heavy vehicles who hire them to do so.

Referred to as the “OD Act” it governs employees, sub-contractors, cooperations and partnerships that carry out the business of transporting goods. But despite some amendments in 2010, the act fell short in providing adequate protections for a safe and sustainable transport industry.

Until now.

The TWU has been tirelessly working to amend the Owner Driver Act, with changes made by a new Owner Driver Bill being very beneficial to owner-drivers.

The Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Amendment Bill 2022 will give Owner-drivers greater protections against

hirers. Which include protections against unfair or unreasonable terms in owner-driver contracts, making it easier, and quicker for owner-drivers to recover monies owed by to them by hirers.

The changes will also allow the Road Freight Transport Industry Tribunal (“the Tribunal”) the ability to arbitrate disputes relating to negotiations of owner-drivers’ contracts between a group of owner-drivers and a hirer. The amended OD Act will also make an owner-driver contract unconscionable if the contract provides for payment to the owner-driver at a rate that is less than the Guideline rates.

Act could be improved, discussions with Government Ministers and Premier to make sure that the Government delivers on its promises to amend the OD Act, consultation with industry and discussions with the Department of Transport.

Those efforts have paid off, and as a result owner-drivers will have greater protections, and will have access to a wider range of remedies in matters that go to the Tribunal. Accordingly, hirers will be required to pay owner-drivers rates that are safe and sustainable.

The TWU is still campaigning to get this legislation to include vehicles under 4.5 tonne. The small vehicle, courier and parcel delivery sector is the fastest growing sector in the transport industry, and is open to exploitation of Owner-drivers and workers. Having an industry body and tribunal to bring disputes will go a long way to cleaning up the industry and clawing back more power for transport workers that are exploited by the clients at the top of the supply chain.

The changes to the OD Act that are made by the OD Amendment Bill, are substantial and will result in owner-drivers having significantly more rights and protections than they currently have.

As well, owner-drivers will have access to an expanded range of remedies if they refer a matter to the Tribunal. Importantly, for many owner-drivers, the OD Amendment Bill makes the Guideline Rates enforceable, which is not the case presently.

The OD Amendment Bill is a big win for owner-driver members of the TWU and, owner-drivers generally. This win is a result of several years of hard work by the TWU. That included, making submissions to the Government about how the OD

The next step in a more safe and sustainable transport industry is for the Federal Government to introduce legislation against the drive to the bottom by the clients.

Ahuge win for the bulldozer operators at Hanson Sands who’ve secured a 6.95% wage increase in their first year of a three year agreement.

This is inclusive of bonuses that have now been locked into their hourly rate which are also paid on overtime. It’s a big win that keeps up with the rising cost of living in WA at 7.3% which is much higher than any other Australian state.

The drivers have also won a 3% increase in their second and third year of the agreement, or CPI capped at 4% if CPI is higher.

The agreement got voted up which was a great bonus for Christmas for the heavy lifters.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Steering Healthy Minds (SHM) is a collaboration between key organisations with interests in the transport industry. All of these organisations recognise that mental health issues in the industry are on the rise and want to offer meaningful support for workers and establish programs and support for employers.

The Transport Workers Union WA Branch has teamed up with SHM to make meaningful mental health support and solutions for transport workers. Steering Healthy Minds continues to roll out across the state, training transport workers in Mental Health First Aid. Mental Health

First Aid training gives participants the skills to recognise declining mental health or crisis, and the confidence to intervene.

Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA) is skills based, early-intervention training that aids to mobilise and empower communities by equipping people with the knowledge and confidence to recognise, connect and respond to someone experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis.

1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health problem in any given year. That means that every person is likely to know someone who is experiencing a mental health problem, whether that is a family member, a friend or colleague. In fact, mental illness is now said to affect every Australian either directly or indirectly. Transport is an

industry that is at an even greater risk of deteriorating mental health, risk factors that include isolation, poor diet and nutrition, lack of communication and an industry heavily dominated by males.

That is why the team at Steering Healthy Minds are in the TWU offices this week to provide MHFA training and improve mental health literacy and support skills in the community to help catch more Australians experiencing mental health problems and improve the lives of transport workers.

ANOTHER STRONG YEAR FOR TRANSPORT WORKERS Bring on 2023

Thiswas the year that Australians called for change, for an end to the reckless stagnation of the Morrison Government, and when the opportunity arose the nation grabbed it with both hands.

In a magnificent show of unity that transcended industries and state lines, we threw out the toxic government that had allowed – in fact encouraged – wages to flatline, job security to crash, and working families to suffer.

Right up until the May election, supply chains were in disarray because workers’ calls for covid protections like RAT tests had been ignored. Aviation workers to this day are still suffering the chaotic consequences of inaction over illegal sackings and attacks on workers which led to chronic understaffing and a mass exodus of experienced workers during covid.

There have been challenging times this year, but there has also been great triumph. Following years of hard work, protests and convoys – including an outstanding national industry convoy in July – TWU members achieved a commitment from the Albanese Government to empower the Fair Work Commission to set enforceable standards in road transport.

Work has already begun to back in this commitment and get lifesaving reform off the ground, including to regulate the gig economy – the biggest threat to traditional transport jobs.

Years of campaigning and holding gig companies to account even cracked the toughest nut – bringing gig giants Uber and DoorDash to sign agreements with the TWU for minimum standards for food delivery and rideshare drivers.

After remarkable wins across our majors last year, we locked, sealed and delivered job security agreements, with hefty pay increases reaching workers’ pockets bringing great relief to the cost-of-living pressures. The hard work to enforce these agreements is underway as we build to another bargaining round next year.

Following the lead of the majors, retail transport companies are growing their union strength, preparing to bargain next year and again in 2026 with more of the industry standing together.

Bus drivers have led the charge to improving safety for workers and passengers, keeping up the fight for better protections against violence and abuse, which no worker should be forced to contend with in their job.

Workers have stepped up with strong actions across the country in waste, cash-intransit, buses, owner-drivers, and concrete. For the second time, Qantas workers defeated the corporate dictator in the Federal Court, with four judges unanimously declaring their outsourcing illegal.

Across Menzies and Dnata, ground and catering workers stood strong together and achieved high pay rises, job security protections and many conversions to fulltime or permanent positions.

Swissport is kicking off with workers joining the TWU like never before to lift standards, pay and conditions. In September, Swissport

workers bravely lifted the lid on appalling safety practices at their employer, putting workers and passengers in danger.

In 2022, Australians called for change. TWU members are delivering it. We won’t rest until the roads and skies are safer places of work, with good quality, secure jobs and a dependable income.

ROAD ROUND UP!

In2022, members have been making their voices heard in road transport. From national convoys to members lobbying in Parliament House or in their yards, we’re closer than ever to real reform and a fairer, safer industry for all road transport workers.

ENFORCING OUR AGREEMENTS IN MAJORS

After a huge year in 2021 fighting for job security and achieving industry first 15% super, in majors we turned this year to enforcing agreements. We’ve been holding companies to account on commitments they made, especially:

• Passing on wage and super increases, including CPI increases

• Enhanced TWU induction rights to keep building our density and power

• Auditing of outside hire and ensuring compliance

• Consultation and dispute resolution rights.

With bargaining to commence again in 2023 for several of the majors, it’s crucial that we continue to stand together as we did so successfully in 2021.

RAMPING UP IN RETAIL

As we build to our next industry push in 2026, solidifying our union power in companies with key retail contracts is essential. In 2022, we’ve been building our membership in these companies, improving our delegate structures and making sure we’re ready to fight for same job, same pay and better conditions across the industry.

WINS FOR OWNER DRIVERS

With sky-rocketing fuel prices causing financial stress to many owner drivers already with tight margins, your TWU has been hard at work to ensure a fairer system. We made sure that the Fuel Tax Credits system, effectively abolished by the Morrison government, was brought back in when the fuel excise returned in full.

We’ve also had big wins in NSW with minimum rates for couriers and Amazon Flex drivers, and in QLD with proposed legislation that would mean access to unfair dismissals, minimum rates for cost recovery for owner drivers.

CHARTERS SIGNED WITH GIG GIANTS

In 2022 we’ve made massive strides in the gig economy off the back of strong efforts from gig workers, and have now signed charters with Doordash and Uber to pursue minimum standards and modernise our outdated laws. This is huge for gig workers who have faced rampant exploitation for far too long, and we’ll be working further with these companies to ensure fair and safe work in the gig economy.

SAFE RATES ON THE HORIZON

After years of campaigning from members, we’ve had a major triumph in road transport.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In July, a TWU delegation met with dozens of politicians from all sides of politics, who committed to taking action for a fairer and safer road transport industry.

Following the lobbying meetings, hundreds of TWU members from around the country participated in national convoys that were splashed across every major news channel.

With industry participants joining our calls for change, it was impossible to ignore. Off the back of members’ lobbying, national convoys and an industry roundtable, as well as the years of work that’s led us to this point, we’ve had a major triumph in our fight for safe rates.

The Federal Government has now announced a plan to empower the Fair Work Commission to set fair standards for the entire transport industry. Having these minimum standards for all workers – including those in the gig economy – will allow a level playing field, make sure companies at the top of the supply chain pay their fair share, and allow drivers a seat at the decision-making table. Now that we’re this close, we can’t afford to lose momentum. In 2023, it’s more important than ever for us to stand together and get these life-saving reforms over the line.

STAND WITH THEO

In November, an important court case opened and its result will affect workplace health and safety across Australia.

In the first ever prosecution of its kind, Qantas has been hit with criminal charges for targeting and standing down HSR Theo Seremetidis at the start of the pandemic. Through ten days of hearings in November, Theo has shown exceptional bravery in continuing to stand up for workers against Australia’s worst corporate bully. The case will now continue in 2023.

This is a big case for every worker in Australia. If Qantas is successfully prosecuted, it will be a huge win for workplace safety everywhere.

THEO’S STORY

• In early 2020, workers were made to clean planes arriving from covid hotspots in China without disinfectant, PPE, or covid safe training at the start of the pandemic.

• Q antas called the risk to workers “negligible”, and dismissed their concerns

• Theo advised workers on their legal rights to cease unsafe work

• Q antas stood Theo down, accusing him of spreading misinformation and causing anxiety at work.

• Theo never worked another day at Q antas. Exactly one year after he was stood down, he and his workmates were illegally outsourced by the airline.

THE IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH AND SAFETY REPS

A health and safety representative (HSR) is elected by fellow workers to represent members of a work group in health and safety matters, and have powers under WHS legislation.

HSRs exercising their powers and functions are a crucial part of maintaining a safe workplace. Trained HSRs have the right to:

• Inspect your workplace

• Meet with workers about safety issues

• Issue provisional improvement notices

• Request the assistance of another person e.g. union representative or an inspector from the regulating body

• Protect workers by directing them to cease unsafe work.

The WHS Act protects HSRs because of the important role they play in keeping workers safe.

No employer has the right to discriminate against an HSR or discipline them for exercising their functions under the Act. By standing down Theo, Qantas has again shown its utter disregard for workers’ safety and their legal rights.

FIGHT FOR REFORM

This year, three of your delegates from cabin crew, ground and pilots were in Canberra meeting with over 90 members of Government lobbying for a fairer aviation industry. National Secretary Michael Kaine was also one of 150 attendees of the Federal Government’s Jobs and Skills Summit.

Congrats to these workers for sharing your stories and speaking up not just for yourselves but for everyone in the industry. We raised members’ concerns about industry-wide issues, including:

• Crippling staff shortages

• The need for Government support of the industry

• What needs to be done to attract and retain staff

CABIN CREW AND PILOTS

TWU Pilots is well and truly up and running, from meetings in Canberra with CASA, the ATSB and Airservices to discuss members’ safety concerns, to our united fight alongside cabin crew regarding breaks at Virgin.

As the breaks dispute continues in the Fair Work Commission, we’re calling on cabin crew and pilots to stand together and make your voices heard on the safety risks of not receiving adequate rest.

BIG WINS IN GROUND

After 96% of Dnata members voted to take industrial action, the company came back with a deal that guaranteed huge improvements in pay and job security. They were quickly followed by agreements in Menzies and Dnata Catering, a huge win for workers who stood side by side during tough months of negotiations.

In Virgin we’ve also had big wins for members, including backpay for unpaid meal allowances and higher duties, and increases in full-time jobs across different ports.

At Swissport the bargaining process has commenced, and we’re building our union power in preparation to fight to bring up pay and conditions.

We’re in discussion with Transport Minister Catherine King on an aviation white paper to address the issues, and the TWU and members will return to Canberra to continue lobbying.

QANTAS OUTSOURCING CASE CONTINUES

With Qantas having now been granted leave to appeal in the High Court, our fight remains at full throttle for a fair outcome for the 1700 illegally outsourced ground workers. The High Court’s decision to hear the appeal shows the magnitude of Qantas’ illegal conduct, and the company is now relying on a narrow legal argument to attempt to prove its actions were legal. Because of members’ strong efforts, the public is already seeing Qantas’ true colours – we’ll be putting everything we have behind a strong fight in the High Court, and see this right through to the end.

WA Bus Drivers Deserve Respect

Lastyear we began to feel the brunt from the fallout of the global pandemic. It’s brought with it a rise in the cost of living that we haven’t seen for decades. Inflation and interest rate rises, and the soaring price of petrol have left most working people scraping by to make ends meet.

Working as a bus driver is a tough job in 2023. On top of the challenge of the costof-living, incidences of anti-social behaviour and attacks against drivers that are increasing in severity and frequency.

People have had enough and are leaving the industry, sick of being treated like secondclass citizens. Leaving a surplus of work that fatigued drivers are being asked to fill.

In 2023 the TWU has a plan to turn this culture around and hold your economic employer, the State Government to account.

The TWU believes every bus driver should:

• Receive the same pay and conditions for doing the same work

• B e guaranteed their job regardless of the tender process

• B e safe at work

• Receive pay rises that keep up with the cost of living

• Look forward to a retirement with dignity

So the TWU 5-point plan for a better bus industry will involve campaigning for:

1. S ame pay and conditions for all drivers in all companies

2. G uaranteed transfer for all employees when tenders/ contracts change

3. C omprehensive driver safety and security systems

4. Wage increases of 5% or CPI (whichever is greater) annually

5. 1 5% Superannuation

The WA bus system is a public service. The Government relies on bus drivers, but refuses to guarantee job security, safety at

work, fair wages, or dignity in retirement. Bus Drivers Deserve Better! It’s time for bus drivers to stand up, stand united and join the TWU for a better industry.

Union members are working hard to get results for all bus drivers. But the success of this campaign will rely on the industrial strength and membership of drivers at every Perth metro and regional WA depot, to sign up to the TWU and stay united.

I would like to acknowledge the hard work of Bus Organiser Chris Gibbs, a former bus driver of 15 years, who has recently come on board at the TWU to organise full time and every one of the workplace delegates who work so hard every day to deliver for the membership.

The hard work of these people proves that the TWU is, and always will be, the only union for bus drivers.

Transit officers across the Northern Territory have been granted more powers to deal with anti-social behaviour on public transport.

People caught misbehaving on bus networks could face bans and be arrested under the amendments made to the Public Transport Act.

The changes come in from Monday after being passed in February, with weeks of training provided for workers.

Transit officers will be able to ban people from travelling on public transport who they believe have engaged in unlawful activity on buses, as well as at bus stops or interchanges.

They are able to make arrests if an officer is assaulted and for a range of offences witnessed in the vicinity of buses and bus interchanges.

Contracted security officers working for the network will also receive extra powers. They can ask for people to supply their name, date of birth and address and can stop people from getting on a bus.

DON POTTHOFF

This month we’re shining a spotlight on one of our impressive delegates. Don is doing some great work on the buses in Bunbury and deserves a great commendation for his achievements.

Born in the wheatbelt town of Narrogin, TWU delegate Don Potthoff lived most of his life in Karlgarin Hill (Kulin). Starting off his work in Bunbury, Don was volunteering at the Koombana Bay Sailing Club when he decided to apply for a job as a bus driver and before he knew it, he was representing SouthWest Coachlines. He explains that he was looking for a new job and a mate of his suggested to apply, little did he know that this shifted his career path as he went on to become a Health and Safety Representative for Swan Transit at the Bunbury regional depot.

Don’s passion for unity showed up within his workplace as he was an unofficial delegate for three years after joining the Transport Workers Union.

This enhanced during mid-2020 when Don became a union delegate during the height of the pandemic, he felt being a union delegate gave

him a strong voice and he wanted to be able to enable his colleagues to have the same opportunity.

Especially in the regional areas, Don recognised that the regional depots were not as prioritised as the metro depots. So, being able to directly discuss with management positively changed his job role as he was able to access information before anyone else and give his fellow union members integrity, support, information and direction.

Don loves being a union delegate as it allows him to connect with old friends and fellow union delegates through training which has been one of his favourite parts of representing the Union, especially being the only regional representative in the bus industry.

Don always supports his fellow unionists and consistently reminds them that, “you are not alone and through unity you achieve”.

Don’s motto he wanted to share with fellow unionist is:

Plenty of Pennies to Spend

The toilet paper aisle at your local continues to stay fully stocked thanks to distributors at Toll Kimberly Clark winning big on their recent agreement.

BeforeChristmas the Toll logistics workers in the Kimberly Clark Distribution Centres in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne were pursuing rights to take protected industrial action over outsourcing concerns and pay rates falling far behind their co-workers doing the same job at other distribution centres.

Workers filed an application with the Fair Work Commission to hold a protected action ballot, which if successful would give all TWU members across the three sites the right to take protected industrial action. Fortunately their employer stepped in at the death knock to offer the workers conditions that would hold off the need for protected action. These included: 9.2% wage rise, shift allowance, ability for TWU delegates and officials to attend inductions of new hires and much more.

Most importantly workers were seeking job security protections against work being pushed to outside hire. Some assurances from their employer have been agreed to in the agreement to make sure these workers have a secure job.

Kimberly Clark uses Toll Group to distribute their product lines which include Kleenex toilet paper, Kleenex tissues, paper towel, nappies, and sanitary products.

TWU Vets from the Old School!

TheVeterans of the TWU organised a formal catch up at the TWU premises twice before the end of 2022.

It’s great to have a group of long-term TWU members who have served on average between 20 and 50 years in the transport industry. These are the dyed in the wool, salt of the earth unionists who have carried Australia through the good times and bad. They are a pleasure to catch up with and enjoy sharing a story from the old times. We host a catch up at least three times a year and call on our Vets for campaigns and rallies throughout the year. Let’s be honest,

the conditions we are fighting to protect today are the ones these Veterans won all those years ago. Our Veterans know that and want to continue to fight to protect what they’ve won for their grandkids when they enter the workplace in the future.

I say to our retired members: You may have retired from work, but you have not retired from life. Your TWU still needs you!

IN THE COURTS

BUS DRIVER WORKING FOR SWISSPORT WINS DECISION ON HIGHER DUTIES

ATWUmember who works for the Swissport subsidiary “Carbridge” as an bus driver at Perth Airport, came to the TWU with a claim he had was being underpaid as the company should be paying him at a higher grade. The member drives buses both landside (on public roads at the airport, and airside (in the restricted area where the planes manoeuvre and park).

Airside driving involves a higher-risk, and, to drive airside bus drivers must obtain qualifications above those of bus drivers generally. That includes obtaining an Aviation Security Identification Card and an Authority to Drive Airside (ADA). To get an ADA a bus driver must undertake and pass a theoretical exam as well as a practical airside driving exam.

Being able to drive both landside and airside involves skills, initiative, and knowledge of procedures at a higher level than a bus driver who drives landside. These include communicating with the company’s clients to confirm arrival and departure schedules,

the number of passengers to be collected and dropped off, and the pick-up and drop off locations. Further, airside drivers need to exercise initiative and make quick decisions when things are not going as planned. These skills are developed and learned over time. The member initially approached Carbridge management and requested that he be reclassified as a Grade 5 driver considering his additional qualifications and responsibilities as an airside driver, and the flexibility that he gave to the company by being able to do both roles. Carbridge refused that request.

The member then came to his Union, the TWU for assistance with this matter. The TWU considered that the member had a good case, so we took the matter to the Fair Work Commission (FWC). The dispute went to a hearing, at which the TWU represented the member. Carbridge engaged a high-end lawyer to represent it at the FWC hearing, for whom it paid top dollar. Carbridge could have distributed that money to its workers to

pay them better wages.

At the FWC hearing the company argued that driving a bus airside was no different to driving a bus landside, and that airside driving did not require a bus driver to use any initiative, and, and, also, that, the airside drivers did not have the level of knowledge required for a Grade 5 bus driver. This shows the gap between the workers and the company, and highlights the disregard that Carbridge has for its workers. The FWC accepted the TWU lawyers’ arguments, and recommended that the member be classified as a Grade 5 bus driver.

In this matter Carbridge spent a considerable amount of money on lawyers, and lost. This speaks volumes, as the company is willing to pay high fees to lawyers, but it will not pay their employees appropriate wages.

HAVE YOU ACCRUED ANNUAL LEAVE WHILE ON WORKERS COMPENSATION ?

It has recently come to our attention that employees of a major bus company in Perth do not accrue annual leave while they are off work on workers’ compensation. We are investigating that matter, and, if we are satisfied that the company in question is not giving its injured employees their correct annual leave entitlements, then we will take appropriate action.

For the past seven years it has been clear that employees in Western Australia who are in the WA workers’ compensation system, accrue annual leave during the time that are absent from work due to a work-related injury. This has been the case since the ruling by the Federal Court of Australia in Anglican Care v NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association [2015] FCAFC 81 (“Anglican

Care Case”). That interpretation of the Fair Work Act has been confirmed by the Fair Work Ombudsman.

Although the Anglican Care case concerned a worker in NSW, and was based on the wording of a provision the NSW Workers Compensation Act, the WA Workers Compensation Act has a nearly identical provision to the provision in NSW Act that was considered by the Federal Court. Therefore, the above Federal Court decision applies to workers in Western Australia. The bottom line is, that workers in WA have a right to accrue annual leave during the time that they are off work on workers’ compensation. It is, therefore, disappointing that seven years after the Federal Court

clarified the law on this issue, some employers are ignoring the Federal Court ruling, and disadvantage vulnerable workers. That is especially so where the employer is part of a large national company, with its own in-house legal department.

Therefore, if you have had time off work on workers compensation, then you should check your pay slips to make sure that you accrued annual leave during that time. If you believe that you did not accrue annual leave, then you should contact the TWU and we will look into the matter.

IT’S AN IMPORTANT TIME TO REMAIN A TWU MEMBER

Therehas never been a more important time to become a member of the TWU.

In the last 2 years the strength and resilience of transport workers has been tested.

If it wasn’t Covid, it was flooding of major freight routes, cancellation of flights, understaffing in an industry desperate for transport workers, rock throwing and harassment on the buses, cost of living increases and the rising cost of petrol. Issues that affect everyone in the supply chain but having lasting effects on the transport industry with transport workers at the core.

The Transport Workers Union has always been there for the fight.

Backing transport workers in when they need representation and a strong and powerful voice at the bargaining table. This is evident in agreements underpinned by CPI.

When we were negotiating in 2021, who would have known that CPI would have reached 6% nationally? But when you’re a part of a campaigning and fighting union, we future proof our agreements for exactly that reason.

The TWU has taken Qantas to the Federal court following their illegal outsourcing of 2500 Qantas jobs. Qantas continues to appeal, but the TWU acts in the name of justice and what is right. We want to hold Qantas to account and over the past 2 years TWU members have done exactly that.

Showing the public Qantas’ true colours and recently being named the ‘Spirit of Disappointment’ and Alan Joyce in the running to become the worst boss in the world. Right now, politicians are using the example of Qantas to prove why we need reform in our workplaces which will have enduring effects for the workplaces and jobs our children and children’s children work in.

For a strong and prosperous future, not working like slaves. In 2022/23 we begin rebuilding the aviation industry from the bottom up and as a TWU member and joining the fight we will ensure we’re negotiating from a place of strength.

The TWU WA Branch is on the precipice of legislating for Owner Drivers, with amendments to the Owner-Drivers (Contracts and Disputes) Act of 2007. By giving more teeth to the Road Freight Transport Industry Tribunal and ensuring owner drivers have minimum enforceable rates to earn a liveable wage and have somewhere to arbitrate unconscionable conduct between owner-drivers and their hirers.

The next big step in this legislation is to rally to cover vehicles under 4.5 tonne under the legislation. The small vehicle, couriers and parcel delivery sector of the transport industry is the fastest growing sector and is most susceptible to companies doing the wrong thing. It’s time for couriers and small businesses to get their fair share of the pie. In the last 12 months we have trained transport workers in Mental Health First Aid

training, to recognise deteriorating mental health in their workplace. Transport is a high-risk industry for poor mental health. Every risk factor, from isolation, strict Covid protocols over the last few years, lack of communication, diet, and nutrition when on the road and an industry heavily dominated by males, points toward mental health red flags. Having a dedicated peer-to-peer mental health training initiative will help to change the discussion around mental health and save lives.

We’ve been making inroads in the Gig Economy, signing charters with DoorDash and Uber. These are huge steps to futureproofing jobs and ensuring the future of the transport industry is not vulnerable to exploitation.

After working as an organiser at the TWU for the last 4 years, I was looking for a change of scenery, so I approached State Secretary Tim Dawson for a new challenge.

He was happy to oblige, offering me the Northwest Organisers job.

I’m not unfamiliar with the isolation and the challenges the NorthWest dishes up for transport workers. Back in another life I was drove triple road trains all over the northwest on and off the bitumen, Newman, Hedland, Broome, Kununurra and the Northwest coastal hwy, Karratha, Carnarvon, Geraldton, the whole nine yards.

So I think I’ll bring a sense of familiarity and empathy to our membership that works up here.

I’ve made a few visits since taking on the role in October. One was a ‘stop for safety’ meeting at Toll where the employers had various guest speakers talk to the workers about the challenges of transport work in the north west. Many of those challenges aren’t new since I was working up there, but it is clear that the priorities and direction of the TWU is set on aiming to make a better working life for transport workers.

And that’s thanks to the lobbying work of your State Secretary Tim Dawson and Senator Glenn Sterle whos advocating for you in Parliament. State and Federal funding is dedicated to fixing and maintaining roads and building and maintaining amenities and ablution facilities for long haul drivers. How else can the industry attract new drivers if the basics aren’t being prioritised?

I’ve also managed to visit Port Hedland, Newman, Karratha and Kalgoorlie since taking on the role, meeting various members, seeing some familiar faces and reminding myself why I left to become an organiser in the first place. But all jokes aside, I’m having a great time and looking forward to meeting you and being a representative the north west can count on.

Einstein dies and goes to heaven.

He is informed upon arrival that his room is not yet ready.

“I hope you will not mind waiting in a dormitory. We are very sorry, but it is the best we can do and you will have to share the room with others,” the doorman, Clyde, tells him. Einstein says that is perfectly fine and there isn’t any need for a big fuss. So, Clyde leads him to the dorm where Einstein is introduced to the current residents.

“Well, here is your first roommate, he has an IQ of 180!”

“Why that’s splendid!” exclaims Einstein, “We can discuss literature!”

“And here is you second roommate, she has an IQ of 150!”

“What fun!” exclaims Einstein, “We can discuss mathematics!”

“Meet your third roommate, his IQ is 100!” “Jolly good!” exclaims Einstein, “We can discuss the latest plays showing at the theatre!”

Just then another gentleman comes up to greet Einstein and shake his hand, “I’m your last roommate, and I wanted to apologize in advance, my IQ is only 80.”

Einstein smiles back at him and inquires, “So, where do you think interest rates are headed?”

“How many times did I say it, Harold? How many times?

‘Make sure that bomb shelter’s got a can opener - ain’t much good without a can opener,’ I said.”

A chef went to a dentist.

He’d recently had a new plate implanted and felt some pain in the area.

Upon examination, the dentist stated, “The acrylic is starting to deteriorate. Tell me, have you been eating a lot of Hollandaise sauce?”

“Yes,” said the chef, “It’s a favourite. Is that bad?”

“Well,” explained the dentist, “Hollandaise has lemon juice as a base so it’s highly corrosive to this material. I could do a replacement but we’d likely be in the same spot a few months down the road. I think we will have to make a new plate, but this time I’ll have to use a chrome base.”

“Why?” asked the chef. And the dentist replied, “Because there’s no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise.”

Lone Ranger, long since retired, makes an unpleasant discovery.

“When I was a young girl,” she moans, “you could go to the store with a dollar and come home with enough food to feed your family for weeks!”

“Well, Grandma,” the boy replies, “we learned about that in school recently, and that’s called inflation.”

“Inflation nothing!” the grandmother answered. “It’s all these darn security cameras they’ve got today!”

On a visit to see his grandmother, a teen boy listens as she goes on and on about the cost of living.

that add bulk, not warmth – then wonder why the weather bites. Notice how cosy your down doona is? Fluffy down is a far better insulator than feather, and it’s lighter too. So get yourself a high fill down coat with a 700+ fill power, chuck it over a t-shirt and never complain about the weather again.

4. Good towels

A few things in life don’t really need splurging on. Like toilet paper (just keep it recycled). Sparkling water (tap water is fine). And sports cars (is it just because you can?). But for some things, it’s worth forking out for the good stuff. So don’t call them expensive; call them investments. Here’s our shortlist of things we think are worth spending good money on.

1. A good mattress

It’s said we spend a third of our life in bed, making your mattress virtually a lifetime investment. Don’t underestimate the power of a good sleep – and the impact of a bad one. Throw in a good pillow and some good quality linen while you’re at it. After the couple of years we’ve had, every home should be a sanctuary, and the bedroom is a good place to start.

2. Whitegoods

While whitegoods now come in a range of different colours, the ‘good’ part should never change. Like a good toaster that won’t short circuit your power, or a good washing machine that won’t need regular call-outs. And a good fridge that won’t build ice sculptures in the freezer, keep you awake with a motor that rivals an old Datsun, or keep your beer warmer than an English pub.

3. A good coat

Sure, we live in a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains. But if you live or travel down south of Australia, it pays to have one good coat. Many of us forget how cold Oz can be, so we compensate with five sweaty layers

You know you’re getting old(er) when all you want are good towels. Absorbent? Tick. Doesn’t shed fluff when you dry yourself off? Tick. And looks good? Big tick. Sure ‘cheap’ towels do the job. But they’re not as efficient, tidy, good looking, or just darn pleasurable. And good towels are a pleasure you can indulge in, every day.

5. Good health

Your body is a temple, and even temples need maintenance to stand the test of time. We’re not talking mortar to fill the cracks and plumbing to fix the leaks (though we might need those too). Humans need prevention, upkeep and repair to maintain good health. Think sporting club memberships to keep injury, obesity and related health issues at bay. Specialist care, like optometrists, for regular maintenance. Adequate health insurance for when things go awry. And, from mindfulness apps to psychological support, don’t underestimate the importance of good mental healthcare.

6. Good shoes

Hands up how many of you have shoes you don’t wear tucked away in storage because they’re uncomfortable? That’s a lot of hands. A lot of wasted bucks. And a lot of heels coming soon to a charity shop near you. A well-made, comfy pair is a true investment, because it’s something you’ll reach for every day. Remember, if you don’t pay for good shoes now, you’ll likely pay for a cobbler or a podiatrist later.

7. Good food

Like wine (which could also be on this list, but you’d be here all day), life’s too short for bad food. So put your money into quality fresh produce when you cook at home. Good choices when you eat out, especially with takeaway. And good chocolate when you need a treat (when it comes to cheap chocolate, a bag of white sugar would do the same job). Trust ME, there’s no going backwards from good quality food.

8. Union membership

Did you know on average union members earn 38% more per week than the median part time non-member. With representation and legal help when you need it most, we would say union membership is priceless!

What is debt consolidation?

Many Australians experience debt stress, so the first thing to remember is that you’re not alone. It’s in your lender’s best interests to help you manage it. When you consolidate debt, you fold several outstanding debts into one loan.

Simple changes like comparing deals, planning ahead, and reducing your carbon footprint can all contribute to saving you money.

2. Use a personal loan as a debt consolidation loan.

A personal loan is a useful tool for consolidating debt. If you shop around, you may find you can get a low rate loan with zero account keeping fees, which will help your budget stretch further.

Choosing the shortest loan term you can afford also means you’ll pay less interest over time. Watch out for lenders that charge early payment fees – you shouldn’t be penalised for clearing the debt sooner.

3. Use your home loan for debt consolidation.

If you have a mortgage already, it might be possible to use your home loan for debt consolidation.

The main benefit is that a home loan comes with the lowest rates of all types of credit. Consolidating debt may be as simple as refinancing, topping up the balance of your loan to pay out other debts, or refinancing to a new, bigger loan if you believe this lets you access a better loan rate or improved features.

This does mean your overall loan will take longer to pay down, but repayments on your debt consolidation will be much lower. If you can afford to, pay some of the extra you’re

Continue the process until you have created a dapper and debt-free snowman.

Banana Juice

A farmer is riding his horse and cart through his village while carrying a large metal flask. A policeman sees this and stops him. “What’s in the flask?” he asks suspiciously. “Is it alcohol? You know it’s forbidden to ride a horse and cart while you’re drunk.”

“It’s just Banana juice”, replies the farmer innocently.

“I don’t believe you”, says the policeman, and grabs the flask from the farmer. He takes a huge swig, and grimaces at what he’s just swallowed. “Urgh! That’s disgusting!”

“It’s just Banana juice”, repeats the farmer. “Doesn’t taste like bananas to me”, says the policeman, “but it doesn’t taste of alcohol either. So I’ll have to let you go.”

“Thank you very much”, says the farmer with a smile, as his flask is returned to him. Then he gathers up the reins, gives them a flick, and says to his horse, “Giddy up, Banana!”

The Smith family is having a reunion

The matriarch is a 110 year old woman who is confined to a wheelchair and cannot speak, so she uses a pen and notepad to communicate.

While watching her great grandchildren play, she begins to leeeaaan to the left. So cousin Joe lifts her back up and puts a pillow on her left side. Later she begins to leeeaaan to the right, so cousin John lifts her back up and puts a pillow on her right side.

Later, Uncle Bob approaches and asks if she’s enjoying the family reunion. She takes out her notepad and slowly writes, “They won’t let me fart”.

Peanut in the ear

Sitting at home with his wife, a man is casually tossing peanuts into the air and catching them in his mouth while watching TV.

The man loses concentration for a split second and a peanut goes into his ear. He tries to get it out, but succeeds only in forcing the thing in deep.

After a few hours of fruitless rooting, the couple decide to go to the hospital, but on their way out of the front door, they meet their daughter coming in with her boyfriend.

The boyfriend takes control of the situation. He tells them he’s studying medicine and not to worry about a thing. He then sticks two fingers up the man’s nose and asks him to blow. The nut shoots from the ear and out across the room.

As the daughter and her boyfriend go through to the kitchen to get drinks the man and his wife sit down to discuss their luck. “So ...” the wife says, “What do you think he’ll become after he finishes school ... a General Practitioner or a Surgeon?”

“Well ...” says the man, rubbing his nose, “By the smell of his fingers I think he’s likely to become a proctologist.”

Choose a Profession

An old country preacher had a teenage son, and it was getting time the boy should give some thought to choosing a profession. Like many young men his age, the boy didn’t really know what he wanted to do, and he didn’t seem too concerned about it.

One day, while the boy was away at school, his father decided to try an experiment. He went into the boy’s room and placed on his study table four objects:

1. A Bible.

2. A silver dollar.

3. A bottle of whiskey.

4. A Playboy magazine.

‘I’ll just hide behind the door,” the old preacher said to himself. “When he comes home from school today, I’ll see which object he picks up..”

“If it’s the Bible, he’s going to be a preacher like me, and what a blessing that would be!”

“If he picks up the dollar, he’s going to be a business man, and that would be okay, too.”

“But if he picks up the bottle, he’s going to be a no-good drunken bum, and Lord, what a shame that would be.”

“And worst of all if he picks up that magazine he’s going to be a skirt-chasing womanizer.”

The old man waited anxiously, and soon heard his son’s footsteps as he entered the house whistling and heading for his room. The boy tossed his books on the bed, and as he turned to leave the room he spotted the objects on the table. With curiosity in his eye, he walked over to inspect them.

Finally, he picked up the Bible and placed it under his arm. He picked up the silver dollar and dropped into his pocket. He uncorked the bottle and took a big drink, while he admired the magazine’s centerfold.

“Lord have mercy,” the old preacher disgustedly whispered. “He’s gonna run for Parliament.”

Some word can have multiple meanings

A boy is selling fish on a corner. To get his customers’ attention, he is yelling, “Dam fish for sale! Get your dam fish here!” A pastor hears this and asks, “Why are you calling them ‘dam fish?’” The boy responds, “Because I caught these fish at the local dam.” The pastor buys a couple fish, takes them home to his wife, and asks her to cook the dam fish. The wife responds surprised, “I didn’t know it was acceptable for a preacher to speak that way.” He explains to her why they are dam fish. Later at the dinner table, he asks his son to pass the dam fish. He responds, “That’s the spirit, Dad! Now pass the f*cking potatoes!”

VOICES ON THE BUSES GROW LOUDER AND LOUDER

Since writing this article we’ve already had a series of wins: In January bus drivers received a pay increase of 2.7% come July 2023 bus drivers should also receive another 3% pay rise which will be 5.7% for the year. Our attention now turns to the cost of living payment other public sector workers received and we believe bus drivers should also get from the government. Keep an eye out for petitions circulating and a participate in a social media campaign.

Announced by PTA to come in later this year Credit and Debit card arrangements will be introduced into the Buses, which is a great win for bus drivers that are often a target of anti-social behaviour and attacks over spare change.

A great deal of urgency has been placed by TWU Organiser Chris Gibbs on the security and safety at all bus depots, due to the rise in anti-social and violent behaviour throughout the state. Chris has pushed for more security with earlier starts which started as of Jan 2023.

Please also note toilet facilities are being negotiated to be at Murdoch University in 2023 and that Warnbro toilet facility is currently in the process of being looked in to by the TWU and PTAPlease be mindful when using these facilities that other Drivers use them as well. Together our voices are growing louder and stronger, keep up the fight!

2022 was a busy year on the buses, but I’m looking forward to the upcoming challenges in 2023. We’re still hard at work campaigning to make the buses safer for our members, speaking about antisocial behaviour and shining a light on the tough job our bus drivers do. I think the Government needs to work on attracting more commuters riding buses, because there is safety in numbers and you would hope that if there are more commuters on the bus, attacks are less likely. Something as simple as accessibility on the buses when it comes to the Smart card machines. Having the ability to pay with your debit card or smart phone would be a step in the right direction when it comes to keeping drivers safe. More people using buses, means the driver is less likely to be attacked.

Its tragic isn’t it. What ever happened to respect for your fellow man?

I’ve had a great year working as an organiser at the TWU. I’ve really enjoyed meeting new drivers coming through the inductions and I hope I’ve been able to pass on some wisdom as someone who’s driven buses for a long time.

I was humbled when I was approached by the Swan Mechanics to join the TWU and negotiate on their behalf. The mechanics are in strong negotiations along with the Swan bus drivers and with the regional agreements expiring in May 2023, we are working on a strong deal to come out of Swan. Now is the time to join, now is the time to stand up and fight for a real pay rise. 771 workers voted the last offer Swan put up down

We’re ramping up at Transdev, building power at sites and having surveyed the membership for their log of claims with negotiations commencing in February.

Path is very quiet at the moment, but watch this space. Path has a regional agreement expiring in 2023 and the tender for Welshpool and Kalamunda and Redcliffe coming up for expiry in 2023 too, so they’ll be working hard to hang on to that.

I’ve been working with the Government Chauffeurs compiling their log of claims with them preparing to negotiate early in 2023.

A trial of new bus driver screens is occurring in each of the contractors, and the TWU is promoting the need for the screens and hoping the drivers who use the buses report back their honest feedback. There is nothing worse than screens that glare or are covered in finger prints and prevent you from doing your job safety. Report back your honest feedback and don’t settle for less.

Finally I’ve started conversations around bus drivers being able to access the toilet facilities at Murdoch University. The state of toilets for bus drivers across the metro area are appalling with many being left in an unhygienic state. Holding it can cause more issues that its worth, so bus drivers need access and options when nature comes calling. So we’re working on that. Keep making complaints, remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so I’m all ears.

Safety News

Everyday the people of Perth trust bus drivers to transport their most precious cargo. It is their right to expect their driver to present for their shift fit for work. It is reassuring for the public to know that the person driving their children to school or checking the brakes on a bus before it is released into traffic has had a good night’s sleep and is free from the effects of drugs and alcohol. Sadly, in Australia, alcohol continues to be one of the major contributors of fatalities on the road (according to the National Road Safety Partnership Program).

Even after consuming only a small quantity of alcohol (eg. a blood alcohol content [BAC] of 0.02%) the following effects can be observed:

• Impaired judgement

• Slowed reaction time

• Reduced attention span

• Impaired vision

Being under the influence of alcohol, whatever the quantity, is unacceptable while in control of a heavy vehicle.

In recognition of the effects of alcohol, even in low quantities and the significant responsibility bestowed on drivers of heavy vehicles, the legal allowable BAC is 0.00%. This means drivers of heavy vehicles must not consume alcohol before commencing their shift. It also means that drivers need to be mindful of the quantity of alcohol consumed the day before a shift and the number of hours between their last drink and starting work. Every person metabolises alcohol at a different rate. This is affected by several factors including size, gender and health status – it’s just not worth the risk.

Alcohol breath testing can occur at any time. It can be performed by your employer, or the Police. Whilst the rate of bus drivers failing a breath test is very low, it does happen.

Presenting for work in an unfit state puts yourself, your passengers, other road users and your job at risk. This industry has a zero tolerance for alcohol impairment because we are responsible for transporting precious cargo every day.

Workers new to transport - or not already with TWUSUPER - could end up paying for insurance that doesn’t cover transport jobs. That’s because many super funds and insurers classify transport roles as dangerous occupations and won’t pay up when the time comes to claim.

The New Kids on the BLOCK

Thelast two and a half years have been a blur.

Anyone would think the world was coming to an end with the amount of tragedy in the news.

The war in Ukraine, rising interest rates and inflation. Oh yeh, that global pandemic and health scares.

At times of crisis, we find ourselves seeking hope.

The TWU is always willing to give opportunities to those who have a good attitude. So we thought we’d let the next generation have a crack. Rob Taylor and Kim Scarlett have just come on board as organisers at the TWU. Many of you would know Kim from his work as a delegate at Toll

Energy Forrestfield. He took his site to 90% union density and walked them out in 2021 as part of the majors campaign for improved job security. Prior to that Kim worked in construction and was a CFMEU member and worked on the wharf and was an MUA member. Kim is proud to be union and we’re proud to have him as part of the TWU.

Rob Taylor came on as an organiser full time in October. He’s worked as a forkie in the transport industry, in data storage and warehousing and has some good union roots. Rob’s passion and drive for our membership is what inspired us to give him a go, and he’s working hard and wants to get the message of being union to his mates and the young people of today. Giving people like Rob a go and him having his best crack

is what makes our union thrive is what we’re all about.

So back the boys in, support them and they’ll support you.

The kids are alright and the union with thrive with fresh faces like these a part of the team.

LAST LAUGH

A woman is badly burned in a car accident and requires a skin graft on her face.

Because of her injuries the doctors are unable to take skin from any part of her body, so they must rely on a donor. Her husband of 25 years volunteers and the operation goes ahead. Whilst deciding which bit of his skin to use he mentions he has a smooth bottom and perhaps that would be the best place to take the graft from. The surgeon agrees and after five gruelling hours of surgery the operation is a complete success.

When the woman wakes up and sees the result, she is so overwhelmed that she says, “I can never thank you enough for this. I will do whatever you want by way of thanks.”

The husband smiles and says, “We’ve been married for 25 years and there’s nothing you can give me that you haven’t already. Besides, when your mother kisses your cheek, that’ll be all the thanks I’ll ever need.”

The restaurant in Paris

Two retired couples are having dinner together.

The meal was pretty good, but one of the men said that it’s nothing compared to the best steak he ever had at a small brasserie in Paris.

“Which one, do you remember the name?” asked his friend.

Scratching his head and trying hard to recall, the man finally had a clue.

“What’s the name of that red flower called? The one you give on valentines?”

“Why, Rose of course!” answers his friend.

“Rose. Right!!! Rose, what’s the name of that place we went to in Paris?”

A bartender squeezes all the juice from a lemon.

All the strongest men in the bar took turns trying, but nobody could even squeeze a single drop. The bartender thought he’d won, when a thin, wiry old man walked up from the back. He grabbed the lemon, and six drops were squeezed out.

Flabbergasted, the bartender asked, “How did you do that? What did you do for a living? Were you a lumberjack, or a body builder?”

The old man smiled, and said, “I worked for the ATO.”
