SWAN VALLEY LOCATION

Getting to the Western Australian capital has never been easier, with comfortable flying times from most Asian countries and non-stop flights connecting the city to the UK. Once in Perth, the Swan Valley is one of the most accessible day trip or overnight experiences on offer, whether by private car, tour, taxi, rideshare service or bicycle.

FROM THE AIRPORT

The Swan Valley is located a mere 10-minute drive from Perth Airport Terminals 3 & 4 and just a 20-minute drive from Perth Airport Terminals 1 & 2.

VIA PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Regular train services operate from the Airport and Perth CBD to Guildford and Midland. There is no public transport from these locations to the Swan Valley. Transport arrangements, such as a hire car, tour or bicycle, should be made prior to your arrival.

The wineries featured on the Fine Wine Trail produce some of the best and most typical wines in the Swan Valley. All have won trophies at the Swan Valley Wine Show in recent years.

Wine and Art Off the Beaten Track is an authentic meet-the-maker experience where you can discover the creative talent behind family owned and operated wineries, handcrafted products and stunning artistic works.

There is a bounty of produce grown in the Swan Valley. Buy or pick your own from friendly locals, vignerons and farmers at stores, stalls and farm gates on our Fresh Seasonal Produce Trail.

If your family loves a good adventure, then give one of the Swan Valley’s free family fun trails a go. Half car rally, half treasure hunt, the Great Valley Rally is not only loads of fun, it's educational. Navigate the route and solve the cryptic clues at each of the checkpoints. On completion, you’ll be rewarded with a certificate and a small gift for the kids. This is a FREE activity, available any day of the year, with instructions, a clue sheet and map available to download from swanvalley.com.au or they can be collected from the Swan Valley Visitor Centre.

Regional wine styles

The Swan Valley's Mediterranean climate allows winemakers to grow and produce a remarkably wide range of varieties suited to a smorgasbord of cuisines. While the wines listed here are most typical of what is found in the Valley, visitors will discover Durif, Tempranillo, Rose, Grenache, Viognier and more. Follow the Swan Valley Fine Wine Trail, where you can visit wineries producing some of the best and most typical wines that have won trophies in recent years.

SPARKLING WINES

Sparkling wines have long been the favoured drink to celebrate any occasion. Making sparkling wine in the traditional Methode Champenoise, the same method that produces Champagne in France, is labour intensive but well worth the extra effort. In the Swan Valley, delicious and creamy sparkling wines are produced from traditional varieties such as Chardonnay as well as Chenin Blanc and Shiraz.

VERDELHO

Verdelho thrives in the climate of the Swan Valley. The variety is crisp and dry with tropical notes and is great with or without food. Ideal to serve with tapas, freshly shucked oysters and most Asian cuisines.

CHENIN BLANC

Chenin Blanc is grown extensively in the Valley and often forms the basis of wines called ‘classic’. This crisp, dry, minerally style with intense flavour is ideal to serve with seafood and light-style chicken dishes.

PETIT VERDOT

Petit Verdot has gained a strong following in the Swan Valley. Dense in colour and highly aromatic with notes of blueberries and spice flavours on the palate, it is best matched with rich foods such as hearty casseroles, roast duck and strong cheddar cheese.

SHIRAZ

Shiraz is used to make a full bodied red wine suitable for early consumption or for cellaring. The use of new and old oak adds greater complexity and depth. In the Swan Valley, there are still some blocks of very old Shiraz vines that produce a minimum yield but very high quality wine. Great food matches include grilled red meats, coq au vin and dry cheddar-style cheeses.

FORTIFIED WINES

Fortified wines are often referred to as liquid sunshine as the fruit is left on the vines for extended ripening in the summer sun. The berries are semi-dried which concentrates the grape sugars and flavours. The term ‘fortified’ refers to the addition of a small amount of brandy to strengthen the partly fermented wine, which is then left to mature in an oak barrel. Luscious fortified wines you will find on the Swan Valley Fortified Wine Trail include Pedro Ximenes, Muscadelle, Liqueur Shiraz and Liqueur Verdelho.

The first grapevines in Western Australia date back to 1829 with plantings established by Thomas Waters at Olive Farm in South Guildford. In 1840, table grapes were planted at Sandalford in Caversham. There was a steady increase in demand for table grapes during the 1850s and by the 1890s the Swan Valley had established a thriving export industry.

Table grapes remain the region's largest commercial crop, their distinctive A-frame trellising distinguishing them from grapes being grown for wine. From December to March, you can enjoy a variety of white (green), red and black grapes including popular new seedless and traditional vintage varieties. Buying or picking your own grapes is an experience locals love as much as visitors.

Year round you will also find Swan Valley artisan produce such as sourdough bread, honey, jams, relishes, oils and vinegars.

The Swan Valley has plenty of stalls jam-packed with produce freshly-picked from the farm. What's available is seasonal but you will find something full of flavour, no matter what time of year you visit.

In summer, expect to feast on delicious grapes, watermelons, rockmelons, peaches, figs, mangoes and tomatoes. Come autumn, the Valley offers late season grapes, pomegranates and an array of veggies perfect for roasting. Winter is full of zesty citrus and strawberries, while in spring you'll find asparagus and broad beans.

The picturesque village of Guildford was established during the founding of the Swan River Colony in 1829 and today it is one of only three towns in Perth on the National Trust register. Guildford has also been officially added to the State Register of Heritage Places. Exquisite colonial architecture is just the tip of the iceberg in historic Guildford – there are also fascinating museums, churches, theatres and the oldest wineries in the State to discover nearby.

The Swan Valley’s history starts more than 40,000 years ago with the original custodians of the land, the Noongar Aboriginal people of the Whadjuk tribe. The Whadjuk people have a deep connection with the land and tell of a Dreamtime serpent, the Wagyl, which once travelled across the country, carving out the Swan Valley and the Swan River. They say the Wagyl still lives deep beneath the Swan River waters.

Historic locations such as WA's oldest church, All Saints in Henley Brook, are denoted on the Swan Valley and Guildford maps with this symbol .

The Swan Valley is also home to the oldest vines in the State. Western Australia’s first vines were planted at Olive Farm in 1829, at the Millendon winery’s original location in South Guildford. While Sandalford is best known for its wines today, the Roe family were initially significant table grape producers for the region. By 1950, Houghton (now Nikola Estate), Sandalford, John Kosovich, Pinelli Estate, Garbin Estate and Talijancich wineries were all boasting flourishing vines. Most of these vintage vines are still family owned and run by descendants with generations of passionate winemaking in their blood.

Guildford HeritaGe Walking trails

Guildford was one of the first towns established when WA was settled in 1829, so it is brimming with historic significance and is also pretty as a picture. With lush, green flat grounds, Guildford is a a glorious spot for a stroll, or follow one of four self-guided walking trails. Each offers a history lesson, tales of colonial life and an introduction to some intriguing characters who have called Guildford home.

Beyond the swan valley

GIDGEGANNUP

Gidgegannup is a rural neighbour of the Swan Valley, made up of beautiful native bushland and quiet country charm. The name of the area has Noongar origins, meaning "the place where spears are made". The Aboriginal people of the area called it Gidjeejarnup, which later developed into its current name with the influence of colonial settlers.

Gidgegannup has some of the most beautiful natural walking trails and national parks around, so get your hiking gear ready. FR Berry Reserve, Noble Falls, Walyunga National Park, Paruna Sanctuary and Karakamia Sanctuary show off the area’s beautiful natural fauna and flora, and provide seriously breathtaking views of Perth and the metropolitan area.

Gidgegannup has the goods. Grab a bite at the local country pub, a treat from the bakery or pack a picnic and visit stunning Noble Falls. Check out the annual Small Farm Field Day in May and the family fun-filled Gidge Show every October.

bullsbrook

This charming rural town with beautiful surrounds and a rich history is populated largely by farmers and nestled among national parks and bushland. It’s hard to believe Bullsbrook is barely an hour out of Perth’s CBD and 25 minutes from Midland.

Since 1949, Bullsbrook has been home to Pearce Airbase, a training facility for the Royal Australian Air Force. The airbase is the busiest in Australia and the only permanent one in WA.

Dotted in and around town you will find sculptures of the Bullsbrook's Bull Trail, crafted by creative locals using recycled materials. There is also a 3km West Bullsbrook Heritage Trail that starts at the Bullsbrook Museum.

Bullsbrook is close to the beautiful Walyunga National Park, the Bullsbrook Nature Reserve, the Avon Valley National Park and the nearby Moondyne Nature Reserve.

Perhaps the most iconic attraction in Bullsbrook is Perth's Outback Splash. From thrilling water slides to mazes, to cuddly native animals, there’s plenty to do all year round.

If you want to learn more about the history of Bullsbrook, the BRRA Museum at West Bullsbrook Hall has collected, preserved and displayed fascinating district heritage items, including documents, photographs, oral histories, artefacts and machinery.

Bullsbrook is also home to several strawberry farms where you can pick your own straight from the field when they are in season!
