Bears will return again and again to a known source of food. Residents and businesses on both the north and south sides of Port Coquitlam are urged to lock up their garbage and green carts and other food sources to avoid attracting bears into their neighbourhoods. Sadly, bears who become habituated to human food sources can become aggressive and may have to be killed.

Protect your family, neighbours and bears LOCK IT UP: Secure your garbage and green carts in a wildlife-resistant enclosure (e.g. garage or shed) or with a wildlife-resistant lock. SET IT OUT: Set out your carts between 5:30 and 7:30 am on collection day, and re-secure them by 7 pm.

What attracts bears to your property Potential food sources include garbage, food scraps and food-soiled papers, unpicked or fallen fruit and berries, beverage containers, barbecue grills, compost piles, pet food, bird feed, diapers, grease barrels, petroleum products and chemical products.

Be bear smart Hundreds of bear sightings and encounters take place in Port Coquitlam every year. Bears are increasingly being seen on our streets, in our yards and parks, and in areas of the City they never ventured before – drawn by unsecured garbage and green carts, unpicked or fallen fruit from trees, and carts set out at the curb the night before collection day.
