We all have a role to play in creating a healthier environment in Port Coquitlam. In consultation with the community, the City of Port Coquitlam adopted our first environmental strategic plan, or EnviroPlan, in 2011. We’re now implementing that plan, and that includes working with our citizens to address some specific goals. www.portcoquitlam.ca/green

Are You Watching Your Waste-Line? PORT COQUITLAM

CHALLENGE

Join the Waste-Loss Challenge! The Waste-Loss Challenge encourages residents to “watch their waste-line” – that is, think more closely about how they discard the unwanted material in their household. About 75% of what is typically sent to the landfill can go into the blue and green carts. For more information, call 604.927.5488 or visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss.

BLUE CART:

The contestants were randomly selected last fall after the City invited individuals, couples and families to sign up for our second Waste-Loss Challenge contest. The contestants will be sharing their waste-loss journey through blogs, stories and videos, so keep an eye on the local newspapers, www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss and our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PortCoquitlam until April. Then watch for opportunities to vote in April to select your favourite contestant and be entered to win great prizes! Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss for contest details.

GREEN CART:

Include: clean and dry plastic, papers, tins

Include: leftover food, food-soiled papers, yard trimmings

IT’S ALL RECYCLING!

Sold as a commodity for re-use

Choose Your Favourite Contestant and Win! Port Coquitlam residents are invited to follow our Waste-Loss Challenge contestants from January to April as they try to divert as much as possible from the landfill.

97% composted and sold as garden soil products

OTHER OPTIONS:

Instead of sending it to the landfill: • Return your drink containers for refund. • Bring milk cartons and beverage/food tetra paks to your local bottle depot. • Glass jars and bottles cannot go into your blue cart. Bring them to one of six glass depots in the City (visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/bluecart for locations). • Take small appliances and electronics to return-it centres (find locations online at www.portcoquitlam.ca/ recyclingdirectory). • Consider donating or selling other unwanted items. • Get a backyard composter from the city. www.portcoquitlam.ca/ composting

Celebrating 100 Years of PoCo Pride S POCO PRIDE YEAR OF

1913-2013

How We’re Celebrating Expect 2013 to be a year of celebration as we join our community to mark the City of Port Coquitlam’s 100th birthday on March 7, 2013. The City’s centennial recognizes and brings together all facets of Port Coquitlam, from sports to arts to business, in a community-wide celebration of our past, present and future. More than just a party, the centennial is about celebrating the existence and history of our community, about building our community, and about the legacies we leave behind. Special centennial events include a 100th Birthday Launch on January 4, a 100th Birthday Party on March 7, and a 100th Birthday Homecoming on August 17 and 18, at which former residents are invited to reconnect with Port Coquitlam. A number of existing City and community events will also take on a centennial flavour this year, and some local organizations are hosting their own centennial events.

The preparations were spearheaded by Port Coquitlam’s Spirit of BC Community Committee, which coordinated the successful community celebrations and legacy projects associated with the 2010 Winter Olympics. With more than 27 members, the committee consists of volunteers representing a variety of sectors, including business, sports, arts, seniors, heritage and culture and the community at large. Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/100 and check this calendar for details about the events planned throughout 2013 as well as interesting PoCo Facts. Centennial events throughout the calendar are distinguished by a signature golden colour. To receive ongoing updates about centennial events throughout the year, “like” the Facebook page at www.facebook.com/PortCoquitlam100.

100 Years of Being Vibrant Since Port Coquitlam split from Coquitlam and became a city in its own right 100 years ago, our residents and businesses have been the heart of our vibrant community. PoCo Pride shines through in our volunteer-driven programs and organizations, in the high attendance at our community events, and in our thriving local commerce. Events: Port Coquitlam has a long tradition of community celebration. One of our first signature civic events was the May Day Festival, which was created in 1923. In the years since, many other celebrations have been added to Port Coquitlam’s annual events calendar. For more information, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/events. Volunteerism: The City provides volunteer opportunities to suit all ages and interests, from recreational programs to event planning to serving as citizen advisors to Council. It’s a great way to learn something new, share your skills, meet new people and give back. Visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/volunteer or contact the Volunteer Coordinator at 604.927.7906 or volunteer@portcoquitlam.ca for information. Economic Development: From our historic downtown to new growth areas such as the Dominion Triangle, businesses play a key role in making Port Coquitlam a vibrant community. The City promotes economic development through the Smart Growth Committee, by improving access to business areas, and other initiatives. For information about services and resources, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/business.

100 Years of Being Healthy 100 Years of Being Engaged As Port Coquitlam has developed as a community over the years, we’ve focused on becoming a healthy and safe place to live and do business. Here are some of the ways we work with the community to achieve that goal: Being Active: Port Coquitlam encourages our citizens to have a healthy and active lifestyle. Free offerings include: • Walking or cycling the 25-km Traboulay PoCo Trail (see map in back pages of calendar). • The active corridor that includes an outdoor gym at Gates Park and three exercise pods on the trail between Gates Park and Lions Park. • Resources and information at www.pocomotion.ca. Staying Safe: • Our bear awareness program teaches the community how to avoid making their neighbourhood a target for bears. Learn more at www.portcoquitlam.ca/bears. • Free emergency preparedness courses teach residents how to prepare for a major emergency. Call 604.927.5466 or visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/ep for information. • Our Community Police Stations offer programs aimed at improving community safety. For information, call 604.927.2383 or visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/policing. Living Green: We provide residents with a variety of opportunities to help protect the environment, including diverting waste from the landfill, reducing energy and water use, and green lawn care. For information, visit www.portcoquitlam.ca/green.

We’ve made great strides over the years engaging a wider variety of residents in decisions affecting our community, and in recent years we’ve been recognized as a leader in using technology to engage our citizens. Opportunities for involvement are advertised in a variety of ways and at www.portcoquitlam.ca/getinvolved. Get connected online: • www.portcoquitlam.ca – City services, news, programs, initiatives and online services • m.portcoquitlam.ca – for mobile devices • www.experienceit.ca – online program registration • www.pocoyouth.com – youth programs and more • www.pocomotion.ca – get healthy and active • www.portcoquitlam.ca/leighsquare – arts and culture • e-Update – sign up for e-Update email newsletters at www.portcoquitlam.ca/e-update • Facebook – www.facebook.com/portcoquitlam and www.facebook.com/portcoquitlam100 • Twitter – www.twitter.com/cityofpoco • YouTube – view videos: www.youtube.com/cityofpoco Other opportunities to get involved: • Watch for Update newsletters with your utility and tax bills and in the Leisure Guide • Attend Council meetings – schedule, minutes and agenda information: www.portcoquitlam.ca/council • Watch the local newspapers for news and advertisements concerning City initiatives.

Watch for updates from January to April in the Tri-City News, on Facebook and online at www.portcoquitlam.ca/wasteloss and then vote for your favourite for a chance to win an iPad! What’s Your Snow IQ? Did you know that occupants of single-family, multi-family, industrial or commercial buildings must clear snow and ice from their sidewalks as soon as possible after it snows? If you have a neighbour who is elderly or has a disability, consider clearing their sidewalks when you do your own. www.portcoquitlam.ca/snow A Year of Art A new season of visual art exhibits opens Jan. 17 at Leigh Square Community Arts Village. Major fire on Kingsway shifts commercial centre to Shaughnessy

hen European explorers discovered this region in the early 1800s, the Coast Salish people had already been hunting, fishing and farming between the Pitt and Coquitlam rivers for thousands of years. In addition to fertile land, rivers teeming with salmon and forests providing wood and game, the area offered a strategic location near the important transportation links of the day: rivers and, after 1885, rails. By the time the 1860s arrived, homesteads, businesses and roads were starting to sprout up throughout the area. Surveyed land was selling for 10 shillings an acre, and two reserves were set aside for the Kwikwetlem First Nation, named for Chief Kwikwetlem William (later the namesake for Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam). In 1886, the first train passed through the Westminster Junction railway station on what is now Kingsway Avenue, further spurring growth.

A City Is Born

An estimated 1,200-1,500 people had settled in the area when the City of Port Coquitlam was incorporated on March 7, 1913, splitting off from the largely rural District of Coquitlam. Lively Kingsway Avenue, the town centre at the time, was lined with businesses and wooden sidewalks, while Canadian Pacific Railway was the biggest employer. A devastating fire on Kingsway in 1920 shifted the downtown core to the Shaughnessy Street area, where the City Hall had been built in 1914. Growth was slowed by war and the Great Depression, but the end of the Second World War in 1945 and completion of Lougheed Highway in 1948 brought an influx of residents and businesses to both the north and south sides of the CP Rail operations. Between 1941 and 1951, the population more than doubled from 1,539 to 3,232. By 1961 it had more than doubled again, to 8,111.

Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope

Coming Into Our Own

By 1980, when a young Port Coquitlam hero named Terry Fox inspired the world with his Marathon of Hope, the population was approximately 27,000. The late 1990s and 2000s saw more population and infrastructure growth, with the renovation of City Hall, Hyde Creek Recreation Centre and the Port Coquitlam Recreation Complex, and construction of Fire Hall #1, the Operations Centre, Leigh Square Community Arts Village, Coast Meridian Overpass and other facilities. The population reached 50,000 in the early 2000s.

Today & Tomorrow

Today, Port Coquitlam is a community of 57,000 with a strategic location in Metro Vancouver, a healthy base of businesses, exciting new commercial and industrial areas, 271 hectares of parkland including the 25-km Traboulay PoCo Trail,

Coast Meridian Overpass Opens well-established neighbourhoods, and a strong sense of community spirit known as PoCo Pride. It also has a growing reputation for progressive governance for its innovative approaches to managing waste, sustainable development and using technology to engage the community. Yet while it has grown and remained relevant to the changing times, Port Coquitlam has retained its small-town charm, its authentic historic downtown core, and a tradition of community pride and involvement evident in the widespread public support for new civic initiatives, attendance at community festivals, energetic Spirit of BC Commmunity Committee, and strong culture of volunteerism. This unique blend of the best of the past and the present will continue to serve Port Coquitlam well as it greets its 100th birthday and the years to come.
