Who doesn’t have a social media presence these days? Whether it’s on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Tumblr or every other social network we missed, chances are just about everyone you encounter at work or at school has at least one social media page that he or she actively maintains. While the internet has revolutionized the way people live, social media has pretty much taken it into a whole new personalized level. Nowadays, anyone can become an instantly celebrity just by, say, creating a YouTube channel and uploading short videos that are compelling enough to go “viral” and generate thousands, even millions of views. Not everyone featured in this special issue took the YouTube path to success but one thing they do have in common as that they all have a strong presence on social media. Cover girl Rachel Ann Daquis transformed from star volleyball player to one of the country’s sexiest women for three years running largely through online votes. “Bunny Baker” Aila Sim-Yonzon has generated awareness about her passion for fitness and the extraordinary cakes that she and her husband concoct thanks in large part to her social media pages. DJ Patty Tiu’s online presence continues to make her a formidable force to reckon with in the local club scene. And journalist James Deakin continues to champion the causes of motorists and ridesharing operators through a voice mostly heard on, yes, social media. Oh, and if you’re looking to find more gems as well as a few cool freebies on social media, don’t forget that we have our own Facebook and Instagram pages. iPhone and iPad users can also download the PopsicleApp for more free features. Enjoy!

Confidently sexy with her heart in the right place, Crizelda Roberts is certainly one of social media’s best kept secrets

Words Edwin P. Sallan

But alas, education is Crizelda’s priority as the now 21-year old model intends to finish her bachelor’s degree where she majors in tourism management. That does not prevent her increasing number of fans to keep tabs on her on social media. Considering she’s not yet officially a part of the entertainment industry, the online buzz on Crizelda is becoming louder and louder as she now has nearly 100,000 followers on Facebook, with her Twitter and Instagram fan base not too far behind.

As the clamor for her to be in show business remains very strong, Crizelda said while acting is not yet in the cards for her, she is not totally closing her doors for it. While she’s not surprised that people find her sexy because it does come with the territory of her modeling profession, Crizelda has a more philosophical view of the subject.

Crizelda Roberts was only 19 when she first attracted the attention of a men’s magazine. With her innocent, girl-next-door looks that she said reminded people of young actresses Barbie Forteza and Kathryn Bernardo, not a few wondered if she intended to pursue a similar career in entertainment.

“To me, being sexy means being confident in the skin you’re in. Because it not only deals with physical features but also with one’s accomplishments and the things that he or she does well,” she explained to Popsicle in a recent interview. As she continues to strengthen her presence online and offline, expect Crizelda Roberts to achieve influencer status in no time, possibly sooner than we think.

REAL TIME ruling the

Social Media World Words Rona Marie Cruz-Field

The sun has set on plenty of TV shows, magazines and even radio stations and many agree that this is because of the innovation brought about by technology. No one has to wait for showbiz TV on weekends for exclusives because celebrities are already posting updates on their own social media accounts. Juicy revelations can be found in between posts, captions or even in comment threads. It is undeniable — whether it’s entertainment, politics, current events, marketing and advertising for businesses, and even daily lives of common people — the Internet, social media in particular, is one of the best, if not the best platform.

James Deakin

(@james.deakin) facebook: 426,570 followers A CNN Philippines’ TV host, multi-awarded journalist, and online celebrity, James Deakin is certainly taking his social media influence to the next level. He is very vocal about serious concerns on public transportation and other current issues, the importance of safe driving and dash cams especially for private car owners and many other things in general. He is the fearless yet fair voice of the riding and driving public. He is popular for a reason and his fame certainly serves an important purpose.

On the pressure of having to post about current issues or his personal opinions and views on social media just because people expect it from him:

I’ll even go as far as meeting the people first. You can usually fish out the agenda from there. But my motto is: When in doubt, stay out.

There can be a lot of pressure, but I try to not let it get to me because I’d rather be fair than first. I’ve seen some people get totally burned simply because they placed so much importance on being first that they didn’t bother to check the facts, or worse, made them up to suit their narrative. That’s not my game. I’d rather analyze something and come in with a balanced and well-thought out opinion, because at the end of the day, that is what people are looking for. There are just some things that don’t microwave well.

Does a gentleman like Mr. James Deakin ever get bashers or hate comments? If so, how do you handle these?

With great power comes great responsibility. How do you screen posts that are sent to you, especially from senders you are not personally connected with, to assure that they are accurate or at least social media-worthy? After 15 years in this business you can feel if you’re being fed a story. So I always tread lightly. I have a series of questions I ask and

Very, very few, thankfully. But as your voice gets louder, you are bound to offend some people or trigger envy in others. But so long as you’re well-researched and balanced, you don’t provide a good environment for trolls or haters to survive. It’s the latter you need to worry about because they are coming from a very dark and lonely place. They resent your success and will stoop to almost anything to take away what they feel should have been theirs. But I don’t mind because they keep me on my toes and bring out the best in me simply because I know they are watching my every keystroke and waiting for me to make a mistake. So it is like having a free imaginary proofreader.

The Numbers Game It doesn’t matter how pretty or handsome you are, how good your business or product is, how amazing and talented you may be— if numbers don’t show, then you haven’t reached the point of success in social media yet. Now the Philippines takes a huge part on all this social media madness. We’re currently at 103 million and counting as a country.

Guinness World Records lists #AlDubEBTamangPanahon as the “most used hashtag in 24 hours” when it took Twitter by storm back in October 2015. The hashtag was used 40,706,392 times!

Bea Valera (@whoisbv)

All the time! I feel like nowadays, aesthetic and branding is very important. When the minimalist trend came up, I felt the need to follow the trend but I realized that it doesn’t represent my brand so I stayed true to what I really like and who I am. I gained my following by being myself and I want that message to come through.

Instagram: 39,800 followers

Aside from her singing talent, another thing that Bea Valera is most famous for is her hair and all the fun colors she experiments with. We’ve seen her in red, blonde, blue, purple and even rainbow. Mermaid hair goals, her laid back and cute fashion sense plus random things that seem nothing but become interesting because it’s from BV are only some of the reasons people follow her on Instagram. She’s also super talented and has performed numerous times in front of thousands in the audience so it’s inevitable that she’ll take over this side of social media in no time.

What is the best thing that happened to you that you would attribute to social media? I feel like without social media, I wouldn’t be a musician right now. It has opened doors for me and I’m now even getting opportunities to be an influencer. Social media has been my tool to reach my dreams on my own.

Do you ever feel pressured to become someone who you aren't because of your followers' expectations?

P&P Tattoo

(@pandptattoo) facebook: 309,012 followers The perfect example of a business becoming very successful in the age of social media, P&P Tattoo started out with friends helping each other out and an existing clientele and following their artists already had. They now have four branches around the country — Makati, Eastwood (Quezon City), Boracay and Palawan. Of course, you have to give it to the main guys who worked extra hard to promote the brand, the two P’s in P&P, Ron Poe and Joel Poniente, their partners, as well as their tattoo artists including industry pioneers Myke Sambajon and Jake Cuerpo. With numerous celebrity clients, locals, and even tourists who fly to the country to get inked by their exceptionally talented artists, P&P Tattoo is, without a doubt, the shop you need to visit if you’re longing for new skin bling. Why do you think P&P Tattoo is one of the most, if not the most popular tattoo shop in the country?

We think P&P has become one of the most popular tattoo shops because we established it as not just your regular neighborhood tattoo parlor, but a brand that people trust when it comes to the art of tattooing. P&P Tattoo has evolved from being a mere tattoo shop into a brand and a lifestyle. Did social media play a big role in the company's success? Yes, it did. Social media helps us reach out to our followers and target market. It helps us know our market better and what our clients want and need. It also helps us share our art and vision in the tattoo industry. With over 300,000 Facebook fans and counting, how do you choose the photos/posts you share on social media? We usually check each photo that our artists upload on their own social media accounts. From there we choose one per artist so all of them can showcase their work. We also post a lot of tattoo articles and new trends so our audience will always be updated.

The Numbers Game Just recently, Anne Curtis broke the Philippine record on Instagram when her wedding photo with Erwan Heussaff received over a million likes. These are nothing compared to international celebrities. Next to the @instagram account, Selena Gomez gets the most number of followers on this platform at a whopping 130.2 million.

It’s very interesting though that Beyonce (108.4 million followers) and Taylor Swift (104.5 million followers) both do not follow anyone on Instagram. Now that’s a whole new level of power. With these stats, then we’d have to agree with the Queen B, “Who run the world? Girls!”

want to show that women can be “ Istrong and sexy at the same time... ” Words Ephraim Sarcer

LOCATION SHAW RESIDENZA SUITES

A 36-year old mom of three isn’t quite what you’d expect to show up on the pages of Popsicle mag, but entrepreneur Aila Sim Yonzon has managed to defy a lot of expectations lately. Aila caught the attention of Cosmopolitan Philippines with the arguably NSFW Instagram account she’d originally intended as a way for her to document her progress in the gym. This curvaceous fitness buff intersperses her workout vids with an abundance of heart-stopping side boob and derrière pictures, fueling gossip and speculative chatter within her conservative Filipino-Chinese community. cosmo.ph featured her for her DGAF attitude towards convention.

She says she hits the gym hard so she can eat whatever she wants and downplays the attention she gets. “I’m just a mom who likes to work out,” Aila stresses, “if you saw me on the street, you wouldn’t give me a second look.” It’s more likely that this tattooed beauty is oblivious to the whiplash she gives observers wherever she goes with her skimpy outfits that accentuate her voluptuous curves. “I’m really low-maint,” says the freckled Chinese mestiza who eschews make-up on a daily basis. “I’m only high maintenance when it comes to my husband,” she laughs, “I demand his complete attention. I’m a spoiled princess.”

She lifts heavy at the gym and encourages other women to lift, too. “I want to show that women can be strong and sexy at the same time,” Aila explains, “too many women are afraid to lift because they think they’ll look manly.” When we look at her buxom figure, ‘manly’ is the last word that comes to our minds. Her petite, muscled physique is all woman despite being different from the stereotypical thin aesthetic we’ve come to expect from most models.

She admits that he sometimes spoils her too much, indulging even her Instagram antics. “He takes most of my pictures and shoots all my workout vids,” Aila explains. Her uninhibited confidence and beastly approach to the gym has inspired other women to go on their own fitness journeys. Commenters on her posts include women who see her as a role model as well as throngs of thirsty men. Occasionally, there are haters who can’t seem to wrap their heads around the idea of a wife and mother who’s not only confident in her skin but shows a great deal of it. Aila takes it all in stride, saying that none of it matters as long as she has the support of her husband and children. She can count on our full support, too! And if there’s anything we expect, it’s only great things from this sizzling hot mama.

Unlike most of the girls who land pictorials in magazines, Aila isn’t a model. A lover of all things cute, this selfprofessed geek and toy collector started a home-based online cake business in 2010 with her husband called The Bunny Baker which later grew into an actual restaurant. For a woman whose livelihood consists of making sinful, indulgent desserts, Aila is unexpectedly sexy and fit.

SIDE OUT Words Edwin P. Sallan

From one of the country’s sexiest women to social media darling, Rachel Ann Daquis’ popularity continues to spike in a big way

Since 2015, volleyball superstar Rachel Anne Daquis has been voted as one of the country’s sexiest women, thanks in large part to her strong social media following that consists of nearly 800,000 followers on Facebook, 235,000 on Twitter and over 500,000 on Instagram. It certainly does not hurt that most of the videos about her that were uploaded mostly by fans on YouTube have earned hundreds of thousands of views. With these impressive numbers, it comes as no surprise that not a few consider the 29-year old athlete as a social media influencer, even if Rachel is the least bit concerned about how people view her online conduct. “People will judge you anyway. Just be who you are,” she declared in an interview with Popsicle.

For starters, her posts are mostly geared towards sports and fitness, which she acknowledges are part and parcel of her success. “I want to motivate people to be strong and to stay fit by joining sports and fitness. I was elated by how people supported me and am still overwhelmed by how people have regarded volleyball athletes in general as some of the sexiest in the country. For me, strong is the new sexy. An athletic body combined with a fit uniform certainly makes a volleyball player look a lot more attractive,” she quipped. Thanks in large part to her commitment to sports and fitness, Rachel is more than just an eye candy in the sport. Having won just about every individual accolade in volleyball: From Conference and Finals Most Valuable Player to Best Server in both the UAAP, Shakey’s V-League and the Philippines Super Liga tournaments, she is as competitive as they come.

Of course, that does not in any way mean that she does not behave responsibly on social media. On The teams she played for, from the FEU Lady the contrary, Rachel is every bit the inspiring figure Tamaraws to the Ateneo Lady Eagles to the that her fans look up to. TMS and later Generika Army Lady Troopers to her current team, the Cignal-HD Lady Spikers have also emerged victorious in their respective competitions.

With her angelic face and drop dead gorgeous figure wrapped in a towering 5 feet 10 frame, Rachel also helped in bringing back the glamor to the once low-key sport and giving it a much welcome, uh, spike in popularity. But even as she is one of the acknowledged faces of the sport, Rachel refuses to take credit for Philippine volleyball’s resurgence in recent years. “Decades ago, volleyball programs were very scarce. Years later, participation increases and with more and more youth showing interest in the sport. I attribute much of the sport’s success to the simple fact the volleyball is fun to watch and opportunities are growing,” Rachel told Popsicle in a recent interview. “All the fanatics and supporters who have been there believing in the sport through the ages and those who made a lot of noise about it in social media should be given due credit for making volleyball in the Philippines what it is now.” As Rachel’s star continues to rise in the sports, so does her stock as a sought-after celebrity. Having also worked as a model and displaying an equally fierce passion towards culinary arts, she has proven that she is more than just a one trick pony. Recently, Rachel has also recently made her acting debut. She plays a fictionalized version of herself in the short film, “Poser,” a horror thriller where she encounters a stalker trying to impersonate her on, yes, social media. Being a public figure who is constantly under a microscope, Rachel’s personal life is something that continues to draw keen interest as well. Rachel admits that she is not in a relationship right now but would love to be with a guy who is “sports-minded and God fearing.” Not that she is in any hurry to find Mr. Right. Most of her spare time is devoted to traveling and just hanging out on the beach. “I love spending my off-season traveling abroad and being on the beach. The beach makes me relax and unwind as I just love laying on the sand, hearing the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea, closing my eyes and thinking about my dreams.” Not that it has ever crossed her mind but when asked what she would rather have with her if by any unlikely chance, she will find herself marooned on a deserted island or beach. “My cellphone, of course. So I can be rescued,” she declared smiling. Now that is one scenario that would quickly go viral on social media.

Social media is all eyes and ears as DJ Patty Tiu a.k.a. Deuce takes over the Philippine club scene Words Edwin P. Sallan

As the first Filipina DJ to represent the Philippines in the “Zouk Out Prelude”—the expanded edition of Singapore’s definitive annual dance party—Patty Tiu a.k.a. Deuce is definitely an influential figure in the local club scene. Known for her frenetic sets and charismatic stage presence, Patty has shared the same turntables with the likes of David Guetta, Steve Aoki, Icona Pop, and Kaskade to name a few. Not surprisingly, she was also ranked by DJane magazine as among the world’s best female DJs in 2015. Naturally, she’s also a formidable presence on social media. Her personal Facebook page combined with Deuce Manila’s have a total combined following of over 75,000. Her 45,000 plus followers on Twitter is not bad at all either while her combined fans of over 170,000 on Instagam are all testaments to her still growing popularity. Getting to this stage of her still young career, however, took a lot of hard work and more importantly, determination on Patty’s part. “I started in the club scene as a promoter back in 2010. I got into DJing a year after getting hired as a marketing manager for a DJ school/studio. My closest friends were DJs and it was only a matter of time before I got myself into it as well, and fell in love with it,” she recalled in a recent interview with Popsicle.

“You know, we’ve always fought that battle that us women are not just meant in the kitchen sort of thing. That us women can bring something to the table as well.”

After competing and yes, winning in a DJ competition, Patty’s luck started to change. Asked who among the world’s top DJs she considers as her role model, she points to Dutch DJ Armin Van Buuren. “He has the biggest heart and you can see how passionate he is all these years. If you watch some of his documentaries, you’ll know what I’m talking about,” she pointed out. “I aspire to become like him one day, I have to work harder.” And it seems like she’s on her way. Breaking through in an industry once considered to be male dominated is already a feat in itself. “You know, we’ve always fought that battle that us women are not just meant in the kitchen sort of thing. That us women can bring something to 46

the table as well. And no, we’re not just about the looks. We know how to bring it. We can be DJs, we can be world class performers, we can be athletes, we can be champions. Women can be anything they want to be,” Patty emphatically noted. Like Van Buuren, Patty herself has become an inspiration to others, especially to girls who are aspiring to follow in her footsteps. “I remember meeting a few people on some gigs and they always tell me how I inspire them to follow their dreams and not take shit from others. The tattoo on my right arm says ‘Aut Viam Inveniam Aut Faciam’ which means ‘Either I will find a way, or I will make one.’ You can be an average Jane but if you have the heart, passion, dedication to match with hard work and a sassy attitude, you’ll go places.”

And yes, women DJs can be athleticallyinclined, too as Patty talks animatedly about her other passion: weightlifting. “I got into it two years ago and for me, it’s like an outlet and an escape to everything DJ related. I fell in love with fitness as much as I fell in love with DJing and performing. I could go to Anytime Fitness gym at BGC High Street at any time whether I’m happy or sad, and it will always be there for me. Like having a friend that’s there for you when you need it,” she further shared. As for being considered a social media influencer, Patty is very much aware of the responsibility that comes along with the tag.
