Scarborough-based Econoplas, which makes drainage systems from recycled plastic, is celebrating after winning a Yorkshire Post Environment Awards on 4 March, being named Manufacturer of the Best Green Product. The Aquadyne capillary substrate is made by Econoplas’s unique manufacturing process from mixed recycled plastics sourced from municipal collection services and farms – so a highly sorted feedstock is not required. Econoplas cites “a wide range of innovative drainage applications that have global potential”, including green facades, green roofs/roof gardens, other construction/civil engineering applications and sports surfaces. The company claims substantial environmental benefits for the product, with a saving of the equivalent of up to 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions for every 44 square metres of Aquadyne drainage. Econoplas received backing from the resource efficiency team at CO2Sense Yorkshire, a business support and market development programme funded by Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund. CO2Sense provided investment support to Econoplas to trial Aquadyne in new markets, conducted research to identify sources of recycled plastic feedstock and helped the company to fine tune its production and financial processes to help secure further private and public sector funding, and improve performance and efficiency. Commenting on the news, CO2Sense operations director Andy Hartley said: “Econoplas shows that recycled materials can be used to make fantastic products which cut carbon emissions and save costs.
