EDITOR’S NOTE There was an air of unprecedented excitement and anticipation surrounding the release of our final phase here at Limassol Marina. Cyprus, for its image and its position in the world of yachting. Did this ultimate milestone come tinged with any sadness? I would be dishonest if I said it didn’t, for me and for the team that has worked so passionately to bring this vision to reality over the years. But upon reflection, it is clear as crystal that the fairytale is nowhere near over. In fact, it is just beginning. Fit for royalty, this next issue rolls out the red carpet and introduces you to our crown jewel: Castle Residences. It points the sceptre at the luxury world of living, yachting, dining and shopping at Limassol Marina and beyond. BLUE FLAG MARINA The first one in Cyprus Limassol Marina is proud to announce it has achieved ‘Blue Flag Marina’ status in recognition of its commitment to environmental awareness and protection, the first Marina in Cyprus to achieve this international award. The award distinguishes the Marina’s high standards in environmental protection throughout its facilities and operational procedures, as well as its efforts to ensure and promote environmentally friendly practice from all visitors, residents and boat owners. The Blue Flag Marina programme is a highly-regarded and worldrenowned accolade for environmental education, information and management, promoting and implementing safety regulations and procedures for the protection of the environment and water quality. Its regulations will continue to be communicated to all Limassol Marina customers and visitors to ensure that their activities adhere to the guidelines in place for clean waters and a safe environment for marine life and protected species in Cyprus. The ‘Blue Flag for Boat Owners’ scheme is also available to all resident or visiting boats via the Marina Reception. The international Blue Flag Programme is run by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE), a nongovernmental environmental organisation. It is also represented by national organisations in each of the participating countries in Europe, the Caribbean, New Zealand and South Africa.

ENVIRONMENTAL AWARENESS DAY Inform, educate, entertain

Every June Limassol Marina hosts an Environmental Awareness Day to coincide with the weekend of ‘World Environment Day’. The event aims to raise awareness, promote conservation and educate Marina users or visitors on the marine environment and issues surrounding the topic more broadly. A range of activities took place again within the project last June, accompanied by games, live entertainment and music, fundraising, as well as exhibits of an interactive and educational nature. A school choir performed themed songs along the promenade, followed by a band using instruments made from recycled materials. The event continues to provide an ideal platform for people to learn more about the marine environment in an engaging and interactive way.

OUR TEAM ON GOCYCLE Limassol Marina has teamed up with Enviromotion Ltd to add to its fleet of environmentally friendly vehicles with award-winning Gocycle electric bikes for staff to use around the Marina. The clever folding electric bike was designed by the McLaren Car designer Richard Thorpe in London. Some celebrity owners include Christiano Ronaldo, Eddie Jordan, Chris Evans and Cara Delevingne. The Gocycle is enjoying enormous worldwide success within the boating community for its suitability in and around marinas. Elegant, lightweight, ingenious and fun, it provides an easy and efficient way of getting around town, the open road or along the beachfront. Enviromotion Ltd is selling the revolutionary Gocycle through its trade partners on the island. Enquiries can be made at Limassol Marina’s Blue Point Yachting and Princess Yachts. Both shops have demonstration models in their showrooms.

CYPRUS – ISRAEL REGATTA New on our annual calendar

The 6th International Sailing Regatta organised by the Israel Yacht Club (IYC) and the Famagusta District Sailing Club Begafigo (BF) was held in October, after the ORC Ioannideia International Offshore Regatta. Over 30 participating yachts from different countries sailed between Limassol, Larnaca and Tel Aviv in the largest international sailing event in the Eastern Mediterranean. The Cyprus-Israel Regatta is a continuation of the relationship that started between the two organising clubs, Israel Yacht Club IYC and Begafigo in 2010. IYC Chairman Mr Easy Swissa commented: “As sailors we believe that there is a need to enhance the relationship between the countries in the Eastern Mediterranean. Our aim is to promote sailing in the Eastern Mediterranean and to make this Regatta an annual international event.” He continued: “The 2011-2015 Regattas were a big success with entries from both Cyprus and Israel. The regatta spirit was very high during racing and during the social events in Cyprus and Israel. The new 2016 Regatta programme and cooperation with Limassol Marina took it to the next level and made for an even more successful event!” The Regatta started with a ‘Friendship Flotilla’ from Tel Aviv Marina to Limassol Marina; two coastal races and the famous offshore race from Larnaca to Tel Aviv Marina followed. Each race was regarded as separate, with prizes awarded at ceremonies in Zygi, Larnaca and Tel Aviv.

ICPAC REGATTA

SOCHI REGATTA

As part of its 55th anniversary celebrations, The Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC), organised the ‘ICPAC Regatta’ at Limassol Marina. Starting with a skippers’ meeting, with the off-shore race to follow later in the morning, the Regatta’s participants were members and other related parties of ICPAC.

The Business Yacht Club, with the support of Vedomosti newspaper, held a sailing weekend for the members of its club at Sochi Grand Marina by Burevestnik Group. With a total of ten participating teams, a business breakfast in the Olympic area was followed by seminars on sailing, team training and two days of racing.

With the support of the Bank of Cyprus, the Regatta’s starting and finishing port was Limassol Marina. The sailing yachts followed an impressive route through the waters of Limassol bay. This was followed by a private cocktail reception at the Marina Beach Bar. The first ICPAC Regatta was held under the auspices of the Limassol Mayor with net proceeds donated to the Association of Children with Liver Diseases – George Psaras – Round Table Cyprus. ICPAC is recognised by the state and society as the primary stakeholder for the accountancy profession and the economy, in general, in Cyprus.

Limassol Marina’s sales team was a key player in the Regatta weekend, with members from Cybarco’s sales offices in Moscow and St Petersburg sailing for Cyprus. With ten participating boats, ten skippers and 38 participating crew, the businessmen and investors also attended a presentation between races to discover Limassol Marina, the destination. Built for the Winter Olympic Games back in 2014 and operated by Burevestnik Group, the luxurious Sochi Grand Marina offers a modern, comfortable and safe berth on the Black Sea for up to 300 yachts, including superyachts up to 140 metres in length.

ROYO AT HALCYON GALLERY

“Painting is a passion, an obsession, an addiction: it is life. Like children play, I love to paint. When I open my box of colours, it’s a surprise and a joy, like a Pandora’s Box.” Obsessively painting since the age of seven, Royo (Jose Mateu San Hilario) is a Spanish Contemporary Figurative painter who continues to be inspired by many historical periods: from the Old Masters such as Velazquez and Goya, to the 19th-century Impressionists such as Degas, and Sorolla. He has participated in a number of international art fairs and exhibited throughout his native Spain, across Europe, Japan and the United States. Royo’s exuberant brushstroke technique is now exhibited at Limassol Marina’s Halcyon Gallery, pioneering with its inaugural exhibitions in fine and contemporary art. Bringing the artist’s work to Cyprus for the very first time, the Mediterraneo Series portrays female figures moving through air, set against lush backgrounds of flowers or the vivid blue sea. The painter explores the mythical, the maternal, the sensual, and the weightless human form escaping its earthbound existence.

Boasting a total of 61 deluxe-living apartments, construction is underway and already quoting unprecedented success, offering potential buyers one last chance to own an exclusive property and enjoy a life of infinite opportunity and pleasure. “Owning a home on the sea, particularly in this location and at this pricing, is a rare and hugely enticing proposition,” reveals CEO of Limassol Marina Andreas Christodoulides, who professes great delight in the successful conclusion of the project. “We are proud to be concluding our development’s construction on this high note; this

All crafted with meticulous precision, the six luxury yachts filmed in Cyprus flawlessly showcase the elegance and power of the brand.

While Princess Yachts has long been recognised for their smaller yachts, the brand’s exciting new product film specifically highlights the larger superyachts and motor yachts that are the culmination of over half a century’s experience in the luxury yacht sector. The creation of over two thousand exacting craftsmen, the M Class Superyachts – including the World Superyacht award-winning 35M and 40M models, which were amongst those appearing in the film – are constructed in the Princess shipyards of Plymouth, at the heart of British maritime heritage...

Experience The Exceptional

In 1965 David King – who has remained with the company to this day – and two friends fitted out and chartered their first boat. Instantly a success, the vessel was sold, marking the beginning of what is now one of the world’s leading shipyards with sales in excess of 10,000 luxury craft. All crafted with meticulous precision, the six luxury yachts filmed in Cyprus flawlessly showcase the elegance and power of the brand, the breath-taking performance and agility which typify each vessel. And, with not one but six of the luxury yachts captured for the first time in perfect formation off the coast of Cyprus, the ultimate in maritime film projects has now been accomplished. Captured on film, the breath-taking production featured yachts with a total combined value of over €70 million, together on the water in perfect formation. First released at the Princess Heads of Business conference in Limassol, Cyprus – a unique programme curated for the brand’s global network of distributors – the film saw the yachts travel from all four corners of the globe to take part. “This was without doubt the largest undertaking Princess has ever made to create a single product film,” Princess Yachts’ Marketing Director Kiran Jay Haslam explained. “While our finished video perfectly encapsulates the essence of Princess and our largest yachts, it is the understanding of the sheer skill and logistical preparation that went into it that makes it truly astounding.”

OUR KNIGHT OF YACHTING Ten years ago, the island’s premier maritime event took place for the first time, initiated by talented marketeer Aristos Aristidou. In the intervening years, the event has begun to realise its true international potential and today the Limassol Boat Show hosts thousands of sea-faring fans each year, thanks to the common vision shared by both Aristidou and Limassol Marina. Cyprus’ only boat show, first organised almost a decade ago, is today a runaway success. And it’s largely due to the expertise of one man: director of Dacor Advertising and Media, Aristos Aristidou. Perhaps it’s his passion for everything maritime, or it could be this young marketeer’s meticulous wording and sharp business sense that convinced former Minister of Communications and Works, now the current Mayor of Limassol, Nicos Nicolaides, to support the project from the get-go... Today, a decade on, and a few weeks after opening the largest annual Limassol Boat Show to date, Nicolaides is still openly admiring of the young man whose determination and enthusiasm have accomplished so much. From the first iteration – after which Aristidou offered the net income from the event to the Municipality for the creation of the town’s first slipway – to the triumph of the May 2017 event, it’s clear that Aristidou has real drive. And it is, he reveals, the collaboration with Limassol Marina and his personal, long-standing relationship with the sea that consistently pushes him forward – into uncharted waters.

Turning The Tide

In 2005, Aristidou returned to the island having completed his studies in General Business, Marketing and International Business. His first encounter with the local market was as the Director of the Cyprus Museum, a challenging and innovative project which he embraced wholeheartedly. “We had a very successful first year. Inaugurated by the President of the Republic at the time, we were able to include the museum in different programmes; it was very interesting and I enjoyed the experience, though with the passing of time, I felt that it wasn’t for me. The Museum was a very stable undertaking, and I was looking for something with more action, something with potential,” Aristidou reveals.

Using his marketing expertise, Aristidou quickly identified a niche market: “My hobbies, from a very young age, always had to do with the sea, fishing and hunting… And I soon noticed that there wasn’t a single Cypriot magazine about fishing.” Driven by his passions, this talented individual was able to launch – in May 2006, barely a year later – the first Greek edition of Cyprus Fishing Magazine, a publication which still flourishes today. “Although I was inexperienced at the time, because the magazine was based on what the market wanted, it was a great success,” Aristidou suggests. “I always work based on research, making use of information about what people want in order to give them just that.”

Sea Change

In the succeeding years, the same business model allowed Aristidou to further expand his publications, including the printing of Cyprus’ first established, specialised yachting periodical, the Cyprus Yachting Magazine. Admittedly, it’s his personal interest in everything maritime and marine which has kept him motivated within a small and undeveloped market, but the constant drive to improve and succeed is what has allowed the marketeer to aid in the creation of the island’s only boat show. “Although the fishing and yachting magazines were doing really well, I was often told that it was challenging to actually reach those who advertised with us: some advertisers were not very professional, others would open their shops a couple of hours a day. There was basically a communication problem: the adverts were there in the magazines, but people were finding it difficult to contact the advertisers themselves,” Aristidou recalls. And thus in 2008, the idea of one, central event was born: a boat show which would connect clientele and advertisers. “People were very impressed; it was

“I also knew that we were an island and that we needed to start living more like islanders, that we needed marinas and ramps, and that we wanted people to be by the sea.”

the first time that boats and customers had been gathered in one place; it was almost a celebration of the sea!” Aristidou enthuses.

True Potential

With only a two-year hiatus since its inception (during the financial crisis of 2013 and 2014), the Limassol Boat Show has since become an annual event, thanks in no small part to the vision of Limassol Marina. In 2015, the Marina took its first steps towards hosting the Limassol Boat Show, offering designated areas for the occasion. “When the show finished in 2015, Limassol Marina saw the potential. It offered more of its premises and gave its support to expand the show. That’s when we had a playground to really play the game,” says Aristidou. By 2016 the Show had already begun to scale new heights: exhibitors were able to participate to a greater degree while additional shows and seminars further enhanced the visitor experience. And this year saw more than 20,000 visitors from various countries in attendance, with a range of business ventures, collaborations, and hundreds of transactions taking place over the course of the three-day event. “The highlight was this year, the biggest show so far; we had close to 100 exhibitors, of whom 10 to 15 came from abroad, and we had boats which were debuted in the Mediterranean! It was

a great success, not just for the organisers but for the exhibitors, and there was excellent feedback overall,” Aristidou confirms. Luxury yachts, yachting services and facilities, seminars, recreational activities, luxury cars and exhibitors from five countries with products from the maritime sector, made history in what was the largest Limassol Boat Show to date. But it’s his partnership with Limassol Marina which has truly made a boat show of this calibre a reality, Aristidou explains. “Even though I’m not actually part of Limassol Marina, I do feel like one of the team,” he asserts. “Since the Marina project began in 2007 - 2008, I have personally known and built a relationship of co-operation with its people. Limassol Marina helps in so many ways and across all its departments: the marketing department supports us, the maintenance supports us, the operations department supports us – without the contribution of the Marina, the Show could not happen.”

Key To Success

Aristidou is adamant that the current successes were inevitable: “I could always see that the Boat Show could develop and become something big at. I also knew that we were an island and that we needed to start living more like islanders, that we needed marinas and ramps, and that we wanted people to be by the sea,” explains Aristidou, speaking of the ethos he shares with the Marina.

“Because we are a small market, you have to be able to offer everything in one event. And it’s difficult to satisfy everybody; you have to include light fishing, light boating, boating, water sports, diving, and yachts all in one,” he suggests. “You also have to maintain good relations with someone selling fishing hooks and someone selling yachts worth millions, and bring them together. All these things have always been at the back of my mind,” he reveals, adding that it is his long-standing relationships with those in the maritime industry that frequently drive him forward. “Customers support us because they know that it’s not just about the money, it’s about a love for the sea.” Today, with the 2017 Limassol Boat Show barely over, new potentials and areas of growth are already being sought. And while he admits that more marinas will contribute to more maritime traffic, it’s the vision he shares with Limassol Marina which he believes to be paramount for further successes. “This is currently a regional event; most international exhibitors come from Greece,” he concludes. “But I believe we will attract attention from other countries in the near future.” And thus the joint dream is coming, ten years on, to true fruition: from a local event to an international Boat Show in one short decade!

MODERN DAY PRINCESS Crowns are for kings. A true queen or princess wears a piece which is infinitely more eye-catching and elegant; a dazzling, jewelled adornment which is a byword for contemporary royalty: the diamond tiara.

OnBoard | 31

With the advent of the modern princess, the tiara has become, quite literally, a woman’s crowning glory, and nothing is as striking, as effortlessly elegant, as those unique creations by Laurence Graff, the King of Diamonds. Renowned for the creation of the most unique pieces of jewellery in the world, Graff is involved in every stage of the jewellery-making process, from the sourcing of each stone to the cutting, polishing and setting of each jewel, ensuring that each tiara, no matter how humble its beginnings, is fit for a queen amongst women.

A Royal History

Originally, both the tiara and its interchangeable cousin, the diadem, were worn plain, the privilege of the ruling classes; the high-peaked head-dresses of Persian Kings, the wreath-shaped ornaments made by Ancient Greeks and the stiff halos of the Scythians are all precursors of the modern tiara. It wasn’t until the 18th century, and the revival of Neoclassicism, that this most brilliant of pieces became encrusted with the sparkle so coveted and adored by all. Joséphine de Beauharnais, the wife of Napoleon, is often credited with popularising of the diamond tiara. But today we’re perhaps more familiar with this quintessential piece as the ornament of choice for the stars of the silver screen, such as Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday and Marilyn Monroe in We’re Not Married; the rock royalty of the nineties, most notably Courtney Love and Amanda de Cadenet; and our current Hollywood queens, including Helena Bonham Carter, Scarlett Johansson and Rihanna.

Fairy-Tale Princesses

From its humble beginnings as a Persian headdress to the Halo Scroll tiara worn by the Duchess of Cambridge at her wedding to the future King of England (who could forget the flawless sparkle of those 739 brilliant-cut and 149 baguette diamonds), the tiara has transformed through his-

tory. It’s our fairy-tale in diamond form, the one embellishment which transforms any woman into a princess for the day, the night, or the event of the season. And today, its modern interpretation has been perfected in the sparkling statement tiaras, dazzling diamond Alice bands and transformable jewellery hair-adornments of Graff.

THE GRAFF ALICE BAND IS NOW THE PREFERRED ADORNMENT OF THOSE WHO UNDERSTAND GEMS AND EPITOMISE STYLE Synonymous with the most fabulous jewels in the world, Graff Diamonds is said to have handled, throughout its rich history, more diamonds of rarity, magnitude and distinction than any other jeweller in the world. Long the crafter of tiaras for queens, princesses and the wives of heads of state, each of their pieces is conceived at Graff’s design atelier by a highly creative and experienced team; a study in unique design featuring rare diamonds and gemstones.

Crowning Glory

Today, after more than five decades at the pinnacle of the luxury jewellery industry, Graff continues to push the boundaries of ever-greater innovation and excellence. And, with the advent of the modern princess, the discerning elite whose flawless style is the epitome of elegance and refinement, the tiara has transformed into the height of elegance, the diamond Alice Band… “Over the last five years we have recorded a significant increase in the demand for our ornate diamond tiaras from our clientele globally,” explains Francois Graff, Chief Executive Officer at Graff Diamonds. “And our latest collection, which fea-

white diamonds, the Graff Alice Band is now the preferred adornment of those who understand gems and epitomise style. As are the transformable diamond jewellery pieces, which can be worn either on the dress or atop the hair, and set any coiffeur alight with their distinctive twinkle. “In line with the popularity of our hair adornment pieces, we have also developed a unique setting for our jewelled brooches,” Francois Graff reveals. “This enables them to be transformed into jewels that can be worn in the hair, depending on the preference of the wearer…” ultimately allowing every woman to glitter and shine; the radiant embodiment of a very modern princess.

A ROYAL FEAST: EVERY PLATE IS A MANIFESTATION OF CULINARY EXCELLENCE

A gastronomic experience at Limassol Marina is a rite of passage to a banquet of the highest order. Each select restaurant is the bearer of unique food presentations that are just as eye-catching as they are mouth-watering. On every plate is a manifestation of culinary excellence arranged with avant-garde creativity. The delectable flavours demonstrate the supreme quality of ingredients and the tremendous skill underlying their execution. For residents across the Marina, your favourite creations can be transported to your doorstep, thus taking your palate on a journey within the comfort of your home or your yacht. Whatever the location, every guest can enjoy show-stopping dishes fit for a king. Here is a closer look at those tempting destinations where the appetite can anchor.

Pyxida

Marina Breeze Lounge Bar

Epsilon Resto | Bar

Pyxida reigns as the supreme ambassador of allthings seafood and continues to raise the bar in quality, service and imagination. Its menu covers a wide spectrum of cooking methods, from the traditional to the more adventurous. “Our main source of inspiration is the daily catch of our fishermen and fresh imports throughout the week,” says Petros Georgiou, Executive Chef.

Coming from an established name in the industry, the Breeze Group’s Marina location provides a ground-breaking take on gastronomy in a truly unique location. Its selection boasts carefully crafted dishes consisting of experimental and yet balanced combinations of flavours. “A rather special appetiser is the caviar (pictured above), originating from Atlantic Sturgeon and locally sourced from the village of Trimiklini,” says Spyros Elia, Executive Chef.

Epsilon has swiftly gained recognition as the culinary headquarters of fusion cuisine. It is the latest brainchild of the Carob Mill Restaurants that boasts almost twenty years in gastronomic experience.

Fish and Seafood Restaurant

Beloved favourites of the clientele include fresh grouper, carefully prepared on the grill, and the blue fin tuna tartare, either imported from Greece or fished in Cyprus, depending on the season. Pyxida is also synonymous with the more lavish fruits of the sea. Its premium Gillardeau and Rock oysters from France (pictured above) and glistening clams from Greece are irresistible. Their refreshing, salty taste is ornamented with lemon juice, chilli sauce and red vinegar with onion. Canadian lobster (pictured above) is another must-try with its refreshing additions of vegetables such as avocado, broccoli and courgette and a tangy rose marie sauce. The garnish of Salicorne seaweed is also an aphrodisiac, yet all dishes succeed in arousing the taste buds.

Restaurant - Lounge Bar

Other seafood delicacies include the delicate but buttery-flavoured black cod and the effortlessly delicious salmon tartare. The duck fillet (pictured above) is a visual crowd-pleaser with its rainbow display of asparagus, carrots and peas. Upon tasting, the succulent meat is enveloped by an interplay of tart apple ragout and a sweet sauce of mushrooms and maple syrup. “Our labels of Amarone della Valpolicella are popular with this best-selling dish.” Together with its extensive wine list and uninterrupted views of the horizon, Marina Breeze is a gourmet encounter that will satisfy all senses.

Restaurant and Bar

“We aim to play with flavours, textures and colours on the plate,” says Diomedes Hadjivarnavas, Executive Chef. “Our Black Angus Beef (pictured left) reflects our tradition in mastery: aged for three days and sautéed in butter, flavoured with a condiment of Cyprus capers and parmesan and accompanied by torched leeks, cooked with the sous-vide method.” Their inventions include their own dashi – a Japanese fish and seaweed stock - and black-coloured sushi using rice infused with squid ink. On a sweeter note, is the melting ball (pictured above) where hot chocolate sauce is poured over a ball of Belgian chocolate. The chocolate cracks and the mixed berry topping descends into a biscottino crème brûlée filling. Incorporating elements from different influences, the team of Carob Mill chefs are at the forefront of food design.

BY ROYAL DECREE

Champagne from Maison Ruinart, the oldest Champagne house in France, takes centre stage at La Maison du Vin’s exclusive wine cellar.

W

ithin the regal collections that occupy La Maison du Vin in Limassol, the flagship of the store is the eminent Ruinart Champagne. As the finest Champagne in France, Ruinart was coveted by the great lovers Napoleon and Josephine and with the audacity that ruled the court, Ruinart Champagne was ordered to fill the cellars. With that same tenacity, the bill was not paid when the Emperor divorced his distinguished but expensive lady. But Maison de Ruinart still thrived despite the actions of spurned royalty. Ruinart was the inspiration of visionary monk Dom Thierry Ruinart who frequented court and became infatuated with a new “wine with bubbles”. In 1729, Nicolas Ruinart, Dom Ruinart’s favoured nephew, founded the first Champagne House and started exporting due to the 1728 Louis XV Royal Decree allowing baskets of up to 100 bottles of sparkling wine to be shipped. Success was preordained and the

Blanc de Blancs, Rose, “R” de Ruinart and eloquent vintages of Dom Ruinart now prevail upon distinguished wine drinkers to taste their delicate aromas and rich freshness.

Of Noble Stock

Alongside the elegant bottles of bubbly stand other celebrated names in the world of wine: Angelo Gaja and La Scolca from Italy, Louis Jadot and Guigal from France and Penfolds from Australia. And the curator of this fine collection is a man who has his own celebrated connections, Victor Papadopoulos. As the recipient of Ordre National du Mérite and Officier de l’Ordre du Mérite Agricole from France, and with the title of the Cavaliere Dell’Ordine al Merito Della Repuplica Italiana, Victor is also Chevalier de la Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin and President of La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs for Cyprus, the oldest Gastronomique Union, founded by King Louis le Saint in 1248.

Stately Service

“I have made my hobby my business,” says Victor, who started La Maison du Vin 20 years ago and still hand picks each wine. He bids a warm welcome to all and will help select wines, Maxim’s Paris chocolates and even Eurocave cabinets for careful storage. Gift baskets and tailored packages are personalised for the perfect presentation and events can be organised by La Maison du Vin with all wines specifically chosen to suit.

REGAL ARTISTRY In the world of exquisite pens, Ancora reigns supreme, courtesy of a long legacy forged in Italian craftsmanship.

t is the astute perfectionist who understands the nature of a valuable writing pen. Being able to feel the intricate engraving, look closely at the inlay, the artwork and the mechanisms is pure pleasure. Ancora pens, crafted to perfection with the knowledge of nearly 100 years behind them, can now be found at Limassol Marina.

most impressive of the Ancora jewellers’ creations to date. “The three new pens are amongst the most ambitious projects we have undertaken. Encrusted with diamonds, sapphires and rubies, we are working closely with our client on the first, and the remaining two will be ready to show in about four months at our flagship Marina store.”

Limassol Marina was specifically chosen as the location for the very first store dedicated solely to Ancora, a store which features the most celebrated of pens: those that will sign deals, declarations and dedications; the pens which will write the future. Ancora CEO, Mathew Briling explains, “When we came to Cyprus we fell in love with Limassol and knew instantly that the Marina was the ideal place to present Ancora. We also decided that this flagship store would be the place in which we would stage our new collections before they appear online.”

Gifts To Impress

Highlighted amongst the Ancora collection are three extraordinary new creations from the brand, pens which Mathew suggests are amongst the

How often does one ask what one should buy for the person who has everything they need? Now the answer is here in the shape of a perfect Ancora pen. Mathew Briling says, “For the financial professional, we have the new Currencies of the World range representing EUROS, DOLLARS, BITCOINS and YUAN, whilst the Admiral collection with its signal flags, compass headings and ship’s rope all crafted from enamel, gold and silver will undoubtedly appeal to the nautical set. A particular highlight is the Wedding Set, on which we engrave the couple’s names and the date of the special occasion on the two pens: a larger for the groom and a smaller for the bride. I write a personal letter of congratulation to accompany

the two pens,” he adds, revealing that the most important aspect for him, personally, “is to know that these pens will be a lifetime keepsake and possibly an heirloom for the couple’s children.”

Writing The Past

The history of Ancora Pens is written for those who appreciate both style and determination, starting with its founder Giuseppe Zanini. Growing up in Italy, Zanini became fascinated by writing instruments from America and other foreign countries. He started forging his own pens when he resided by Lake Maggiore in Northern Italy and, in time, launched Ancora under the brand logo of the famous anchor. Production facilities opened in the early twentieth century and he began perfecting the techniques involved, finally being able to develop his own production equipment. Manufacturing was later moved to Sesto Calende where Giuseppe and his son Alfredo ensured the Italian authenticity of Ancora. In 1938, Illustrazione Italiana newspaper asserted that “a significant advantage of Ancora pens is

that they are manufactured in Italy, using Italian equipment, Italian materials, by Italian workers in accordance with the Italian tradition of quality and beauty”, and added that the quality of work and styling was characteristic of a country revered for its impeccable culture. To this day, Ancora has stayed true to its founder’s dream, never straying from the original product, and in 2019, the company will celebrate 100 years of specialisation in exclusive writing instruments.

such as Michaelangelo (1) or Jules Vernes (2), or countries such as Russia, or the Big Five animals of the continent of Africa (3). The Mediterranean collection is particularly relevant for Cyprus clientele, and especially those of the Marina: drawing on the sea for inspiration, the creators have reflected the waters in the blue body, adding the delicate combination of mother-of-pearl and gold or silver engravings of ancient patterns; the most refined gift from Aphrodite’s island.

Artistry In Action

Working With You

More than mere jewellery, Ancora pens are each a thing of beauty, developed from an ideal vision and handcrafted by master craftsmen. Each of the pens is truly unique, holding lasting fascination for its owner. The 18k gold plated and silver nibs are the apex of mechanical wonder, allowing a flow of ink corresponding to the exact pressure of the hand and movement of the wrist, while the technology of the filling system and the artistry of the body is simply beyond compare. The collections are classic and limited editions with themes which celebrate great personalities

These are perfect pens, wielded by those both powerful and inspiring to write signatures that mean business. This is the Ancora legacy and future: to ensure that every word written by an Ancora is a statement. Mathew Briling, who has himself been an enthusiastic collector of pens from an early age, relates a heart-warming story: “We recently worked day and night to complete a special run of hand-designed Ancora pens for the 60 guests at a certain gentleman’s sixtieth birthday. The look on guests’ faces when they received their gifts was worth every minute!”

3

Mathew looks forward to sharing his passion for Ancora pens: “We will work closely with you, turning your imaginings into reality. Whether you require an immediate gift, a collector’s item or a custom-made creation, the entire Ancora team, both in Cyprus and in Italy, will ensure that you receive the best pen in the world.”

Imagine sitting still. It’s dark and it’s quiet. And then you lift your head and see a canopy so ablaze with light that a whole new world assails your senses. This is the night sky in Cyprus: possibly the best place in the whole of Europe to see the stars, galaxies and planets in all their glory.

The astronomy of the Cyprus skies is unique, and the island’s claim to be the continent’s greatest astronomical viewing platform is based firmly on scientific fact. Cyprus is an astronomer’s dream, but even the novice stargazer will be intrigued by the intensity of the dazzling counterpane of stars in the skies. And what a view it is! From Cyprus, the heights of the heavens are visible: the ends of the solar system, clusters of light, swirling galaxies and rotating planets. Just one look through a telescope or with the naked eye and a fascination for the stars is born. The best place to see the stars is from the enveloping darkness in the mountains, away from the light pollution of the cities. Travelling to the hills in Cyprus is quick and easy, a mere 20-minute drive inland from Limassol, you can reach a maximum elevation of 1,952 meters. Here, the 400 billion stars of the Milky Way, many of which boast their own planets, are clearly visible. While our own sun has only eight planets, there are as many galaxies in the universe as there are stars in the Milky Way. And as we sit on this rock and hurtle through space alongside billions of other cosmic wonders, we start to realise that our night sky truly is the greatest show on Earth.

Reaching For The Heavens

The astronomy of the Cyprus skies is unique, and the island’s claim to be the continent’s greatest astronomical viewing platform is based firmly on scientific fact. Not only is Cyprus located at a latitude of 34 degrees, an angle from which the skies of both northern and southern hemispheres are visible, it’s blessed with up to 340 cloudless nights a year! This lack of atmospheric obstruction allows for much greater clarity and depth and, as an island encircled and protected by the Mediterranean Sea, the predominantly north-westerly winds stabilise the air as it passes over, dispersing the storms over the water rather than the land. When rain does come, it’s always limited in duration, and hence what seems to be a small, vulnerable landmass actually delivers the clearest skies in Europe.

Crown Of Stars

Looking up, some of the brightest lights are the Sun, the Moon, Jupiter and Venus, with the planet of the Roman goddess best viewed just before dawn. In fact, Venus is so vivid from Cyprus that

if you stand in a place of intense darkness, the planet will cast a shadow. But the most dazzling is the largest planet in our Solar System, Jupiter. 11 times the size of Earth, this gas giant is most radiant through the summer months. By the end of September it’s travelling low in the sky, and passes behind the sun, only to return in splendour as a Christmas gift from space. The clearest views of these wonders are through a telescope, or perhaps from a specialist observatory. But the night sky is just as easily seen from your own balcony. Picture the Andromeda Galaxy, the spiral nebula 2.5 million light years from Earth and an extraordinary nine billion years old – twice the age of our own infant planet. A telescope can show the phases of Venus, Saturn’s rings and the nebulae of our own Milky Way galaxy. However, from Cyprus’s southern coast, creations such as the Omega Centauri appear to the naked eye. Sparkling with 10 million stars, this is the Milky Way’s largest mass. Also on view is the second brightest star, Canopus, which in March performs a mystical dance, rising up from the Mediterranean Sea, grazing the horizon as it floats above the water only to dip back into the dark.

A Celestial Path

It is important to understand the elements that make up our solar system to appreciate what you are viewing and when. To this end Agapios Elia who runs the 1010 Asteroskopion Science Museum in Nicosia has briefed us on a few cosmological facts. “The Sun, Moon and planets inhabit a part of the sky called the Ecliptic as they proceed on their path through space,” he explains. “But the path is higher in Cyprus than anywhere in Europe, and the higher the stars are placed, the clearer views we have. In the next

seven to eight years most planets will be lower in the path, but due to Cyprus being at the southernmost tip of Europe, the whole path is raised creating ideal conditions for viewing the Sun and all its planets. And excitement is building for April 2018 as Mars is will be at its closest to Cyprus in its elliptical cycle, revealing deserts and craters to the naked eye.”

TRAVELLING THROUGH SPACE ALONG WITH BILLIONS OF STARS, THIS IS TRULY THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH However, waiting for a year may be difficult once interest is piqued, so we invite you to a series of rendezvous with the stars. In June of 2017, Jupiter, Saturn and Venus light the night sky, in July we

have perfect visibility of Saturn, in September Venus comes into view, in November Mars and Uranus join Venus and by December Jupiter returns.

Dark And Light

Of course, the nearest and possibly most wellknown object in the sky is our own Moon. Orbiting Earth at a distance of 384,400 km, it only takes 1.28 light-seconds for its image to reach us, the same time it takes to switch on a light bulb. But did you know that we only ever see one face of the Moon and that every pit, crater and sea on the orb is the result of billions of years of volcanic eruptions and meteor impacts? The Moon may have taken its fair share of geological abuse but its reflective glory is easily seen with the naked eye from Cyprus as it passes by each night. In fact, many say that the Moon seems to rise faster in Cyprus, especially when viewed on the Mediterranean horizon from Troodos and from Curium. Agapios Elai corrects this assumption, saying, “the speed at which the Moon rises here is the same, as it goes around our Earth at a steady speed but the optical illusion is due to clearer horizons. The difference is in our amazing vantage point.” Of equal importance is the Moon’s celestial companion, the Sun. Never to be viewed by the naked eye, the impressive star at the centre of our Solar System is best seen through a filtered solar telescope where the molten gases seem to almost swim and heave. Sun flares spark at the speed of light, only to touch your face eight minutes later with heat created 150 million kilometres away. When these two great bodies align in the heavens, it’s known as a lunar eclipse. Cyprus will see a partial lunar eclipse on August 7, 2017 but a full coverage of Moon over Sun will occur in 2018, on July 27; a definite date for the diary.

A New Life

Astronomy is a science of investigation and observation, the study of meteor showers and of stars bursting into life. And for those interested in discovering all that the skies have to offer, Cyprus possesses a number of excellent observatories. In Nicosia, 1010 Asteroskopion Science Museum, planetarium and astronomy shop, is home to a fragment of the 1576 Campo del Cielo meteor and to Cyprus’s largest computerised observatory telescope, a Celestron EdgeHD optical. But even a beginner’s telescope will cost less than the average smart phone and as a family-friendly activity, astronomy can start as a hobby and grow into a lifestyle. As Agapios reveals, “Astronomy connects people with whole new dynamic worlds. It is accessible, affordable and in Cyprus the skies are at their best; this is a unique island for star gazers and explorers of all ages.”

MAJESTY AND MONARCHY

Jewel in the Mediterranean crown, Cyprus has been claimed, captured, and conquered by the great and the powerful for time immemorial. For thousands of years, this island was the ultimate royal prize: the place where fortunes were made and lost, in which royal dynasties rose and fell together with the monarchs who ruled over them.

Kings and queens of Assyria, Egypt, and Persia all sought to control and profit from the marvellous metal.

Kings Of Copper

‘Cuprum’, in Latin, translates to ‘from the island of Cyprus’. And it was this precious metal which dominated the country in antiquity. Man’s oldest metal, copper was mined in the hills and forged into Chaldean tools, beaten into stunning artworks by the Sumerians, and fashioned into intricate jewellery by the Romans and Ancient Greeks. But with this extraordinary wealth came the battles royale. Kings and queens of Assyria, Egypt, and Persia all seeking to control and profit from the marvellous metal. By the seventh century BC, the island was under the thrall of the kings of Tyre, the settlement of Kition (now Larnaca) the headquarters of a network of small city-states, all with their own king or queen and individual armies. Ruled by local monarchs (each of whom struck their own coin bearing their ruler’s portrait and the symbol of their kingdoms) these ten kingdoms aimed to ensure Tyre’s control over the precious copper trade. But with boundless wealth came the inevitable dissent. No monarch could resist the urge to control such infinite riches. Mycenians, Assyrians, Egyptians and Persians – the greatest of the ancient races – fought for and ruled over Cyprus. And then, at the beginning of the 4th century BC, Evagoras I of Salamis wrest-

ed control of the country. It was a turning point in the island’s history: Evagoros introduced the Greek alphabet to the inhabitants, ushering in the Hellenistic period and the age of the greatest king of them all…Alexander. Perhaps the most illustrious commander in history, and creator of an empire which stretched from Greece to Egypt, from the Caspian Sea to India, Alexander the Great was assisted in his overthrow of the Persian empire by the kings of Cyprus – rulers who were as politically savvy as they were prosperous. Realising a Greek victory over the Persian rulers was inevitable, the local monarchs threw in their lot with Alexander, rose up against their overlords and achieved political independence in one shrewd move.

Queen Of Hearts

Upon the death of Alexander the Great, the country ultimately fell, in 312 BC, under Ptolemaic rule. A period which saw the full Hellenisation of the island and the founding of the city of Paphos, the Ptolemaic kings were nevertheless harsh rulers, exploiting the island’s riches in copper for all they were worth. But by 58 BC, the island had gone to the Romans and became – as immortalised by Shakespeare – perhaps the most lavish wedding present ever bestowed: a gift from the

History

illustrious general Mark Antony to the Queen of Hearts herself, Cleopatra of Egypt. For several hundred years Cyprus lay quiet and undisturbed, the remit of the Caesars. But in 45 AD, a new tide began to sweep the world. The Apostles Paul, Barnabas and Mark had reached the island, and the inhabitants began converting to Christianity in their droves. And in Paphos, the Roman governor was so moved by their works of faith that he too changed his religion – making Cyprus the first country in history to be governed by a Christian ruler. Again, the kings of Cyprus saw a peaceful time: hundreds of years of relative calm in an otherwise turbulent history. But in the east a new and potent power was growing. In 649 an Arab fleet of 1700 ships appeared off Salamis, and the island was sacked beyond measure. From the 7th to 10th century Cyprus was under the thrall of the Caliphate – only ending with the ascendancy of Emperor Nicephoros Phocas, who drove the invaders from Cyprus and built the mountain castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento, and Kantara to protect his prize.

A Royal Blunder

By 1191 self-proclaimed emperor Isaac Commenos was the king of Cyprus. But he was about to make a mistake which would cost him his kingdom and his country. En route to the Holy Land, a number of Richard the Lionheart’s ships had run aground in Cyprus. Commenos promptly imprisoned the shipwrecked sailors and committed possibly the worst faux pas in the island’s

history: he abused the king’s intended, Queen Berengaria of Navarre. When Richard arrived a few days later, he was incensed by this turn of events. Backed by vastly superior forces, he seized Limassol, captured the titular king and

King Richard the Lionheart (left) and Queen Berengaria of Navarre (right) who were married in the chapel at the Limassol Castle.

DESPITE REPEATED ASSASSINATION ATTEMPTS, QUEEN CATERINA CORNARO RULED OVER CYPRUS FOR 15 YEARS

rescued his bride to be, marrying Berengaria at the Chapel of St George in Limassol and crowning her Queen, not of Cyprus but of England. And then, in a surprise move, the Lionheart sold the whole island to the Knights Templar for the sum of 100,000 Byzants! But by 1192, the island was back under his control – though not for long. Richard handed Cyprus over to Guy de Lusignan, thereby igniting a new era. Intermarrying with many of the wealthiest families of Europe, the Lusignans left a legacy of architectural marvels, oral legends and musical myths which lasts to this day. Kings, queens, princes and princesses from France, Germany, Italy and Spain visited the marvellous island in the following four centuries, while Lusignan rule continued through several monarchs (including the forceful and much-married Queen Charlotte, who held out against siege in Kyrenia for more than four years!). Perhaps the most infamous of all was the warlike King Peter I, who ruled the island between 1359 and 1369. A crusader to the bone, Peter’s desire to ‘crush the infidels’ was exceeded only by his own crushing infidelities... Although married to the beautiful Catalan Queen Eleanore d’Aragon, legend has it the errant king enjoyed a string of mistresses, one of whom was about to bear his child when she was summoned by Queen Eleanore to the Royal Palace in Nicosia. In the ensuing queenly wrath, the child was lost, and the hapless mistress found herself tossed into the oubliettes of Kyrenia Castle; her bones may be lost forever beneath the mountains, but her story immortalised to this day in the local love ballad ‘Arodaphnousa’.

The Last Monarch

The tempestuous Lusignan line culminated in the rule of King James. A king with no head for figures, James was forced to marry the rich Venetian Caterina Cornaro, then only 14 years of age. But the marriage was to no avail – King James died a few months later (possibly at the hand of his sister who coveted his realm), leaving his young wife as heir to the throne of the most sought-after island in the Mediterranean.

The bold and forceful Queen Charlotte (left) and Guy de Lusignan (right). Both rulers hailed from the powerful Lusignan dynasty, whose legacy is still in evidence in the architecture, oral legends and musical myths of the island to this day.

Despite repeated assassination attempts, Queen Caterina Cornaro ruled over Cyprus for 15 years. Until, in 1489, the merchants of the Venetian Republic who controlled the region’s trade forced the tragic young ruler to abdicate. And the island became – after centuries of rich royal rule, from the first kings of copper to the last queen Cornaro – a colony of the Republic…a monarchy no more, but the ultimate imperial prize.

CYPRUS CASTLES

text by Alix Norman

Long ago Cyprus was an island of kings and queens; a realm coveted for its abundant riches and location. But with every king, there must be a castle: a place from which to stand rule and influence the march of history. From the ancient strongholds built to protect and preserve, to the Byzantine bastions of power and might, innumerable rulers have contributed to the island’s richly castellated past, despite the best efforts of marauders, conquerors and Mother Nature...

Heritage

Limassol Castle

The most centrally-located of the island’s fortifications, Limassol Castle still stands watch over the city, the centre of what is now a bustling urban conurbation. Built in in the 1100s by Guy de Lusignan and, according to legend, the very place in which King Richard the Lionheart married Queen Berengaria of Navarre, Limassol Castle fell to subsequent attacks from the Genoese and the Mamluks of Egypt, before the Ottomans first destroyed and then reconstructed it from the ground up in the 1500s. The new stronghold was completed in 1590, its arched halls and barred windows a testament to its new objective: a purpose which was to later resurface, almost 400 years down the path of time... The Ottoman rulers found the castle’s underground chamber and first floor ideal for housing those who had displeased their betters and, centuries later, the island’s British rulers continued this scheme: turning the castle into a closely-guarded prison. However, by 1950, the castle had shucked off its bloody past and become a place of relative peace: today, while the building still houses reminders of the island’s turbulent history in the form of weapons of warfare and the tombstones of the mighty, it’s the site of the Medieval Museum of Cyprus.

Kolossi Castle

Perhaps the most famous of the island castles, Kolossi was built in 1210 by the Knights Hospitallers, and was the seat of the region’s supreme military rule, the Grande Commanderie. Captured by the Knights Templar of crusading fame in 1306, the site was retaken by its original owners in the 1500s after its virtual destruction at the hands of Egyptian raiders in the intervening years. The Great Commander Louis de Magnac ordered that the castle be rebuilt upon the ruins, and it is this ancient structure which graces the land today. Eagle-eyed visitors can still discern Magnac’s coat-of-arms carved into the stone, as well the old Lusignan insignia both on the external walls and hidden in a fresco on the second storey. Set amongst tranquil fields and scraping the high blue heavens, Kolossi today consists of a single three-storey keep and a sizeable bailey. Nearby, the time-worn factory that once processed sugarcane (the source of vast riches for the local plantation owners) is well worth a visit, though it’s the castle itself which is the true glory of its age – and of more modern times too! Appearing in multiple works of fiction, Kolossi looms large in print, from La Milicia de Dios to the novels of British author Stewart Binns.

Paphos Fort

Taking centre stage at the Cultural Capital of Europe celebrations this year, the fortress of Paphos has been consistently in use since the 13th century. And while appearing as a backdrop to the current festivities is a far cry from its troubled past, the fort has remained one of the most distinctive local landmarks for over 600 years! A sturdy fortress built entirely of stone, surrounded by the sea and close by the town’s Archaeological Park, the Paphos Castle graces the lists of UNESCO World heritage sites. But its history belies its present status: originally erected by the Lusignan kings of the 1400s, the castle was constructed to replace an earlier version destroyed in the Arab raids of the 7th century. Built to guard the entrance to the port, the fort was the site of frequent attacks during the Middle Ages, before the Venetians – wary of impending Ottoman conquest – razed the castle to the ground. Alas, it was to no avail: in the late 1500s, the Ottomans conquered the island, and restored the fortress in its entirety – an act immortalised in the inscription above the entrance. But, by the time of British rule, the castle had fallen from glory, serving as a salt depot and general warehouse before its current reinstatement as the queen of the seafront.

Saranta Kolones

‘Saranta Kolones’ is the idiosyncratic attribute which gives this ancient fortress its name. Translated from Greek as ‘forty columns’, the site of the ruined Byzantine castle features an inordinate amount of large granite columns – structures which once probably formed part of the ancient Roman Agora of Nea Paphos. Believed to have been built at the end of the 7th century AD to protect the port and the city from Arab raids, the castle was then remodeled by Emperor Nicephoros Phocas in 965 and later transformed by the Lusignans to include a three-metre thick wall with four huge corner towers. Another four intermediary towers were added along the joining walls, and a moat – spanned by a wooden bridge – was dug around the site, while the main entrance was through a fifth, horseshoe shaped tower on the eastern walls. But, despite these sturdy amendments, the castle fell in 1222; not to military might but to Mother Nature. An earthquake of staggering intensity causing the castle to be abandoned for nigh on 600 years. Today, the castle belongs to the lists of UNESCO World Heritage monuments, and is incorporated into the site of the Paphos Archaeological Park: a popular destination for those who wish to try their hand at counting columns.
