LAID BACK LEISURE EXPERIENCE QUIET GRANDEUR There is much more to Mykonos than parties. In fact, my favourite quiet spot is the tiny, uninhabited island of Delos, considered sacred in ancient times. You can hop on a boat and spend half the day there simply admiring the splendour of the ancient ruins. MOONLIGHT SERENADE The annual Full Moon Concert on Delos is a must-see spectacular musical event of the year in August. Crowds gather among the ancient ruins to listen to classical Greek music. It’s an event worth experiencing at least once in your life. TASTE UNIQUE FLAVOURS My favorite local delicacies are the peppery ‘kopanisti’ cheese, tasty ‘lountza’ – a bit like Myconian prosciutto – and ‘kremidopitta’ or onion pie. For your very own Game of Thrones moment, step back in time and discover the UNESCO-protected Medieval City of Rhodes
If you close your eyes in the Medieval City of Rhodes and imagine the clip-clopping sound of horses' hooves as they clatter through the vaulted stone streets, twisting alleys and cobbled lanes, you can transport yourself in a millisecond back to a time when real medieval crusaders roamed this fortified enclave, protecting their adopted stronghold from enemy attacks. Welcome to the time of the Order of Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, crusaders who landed their ships in Rhodes in 1309 and set about building themselves a secured walled city that still stands today as one of the best-preserved medieval settlements in Europe. In fact, it is so well preserved that to explore its endless nooks and crannies is to take a journey back in time, unravelling multiple layers of history and heritage as you go. PROTECTING CULTURAL HERITAGE Thanks to UNESCO – who considered the Medieval City so special that they have been protecting and preserving it as a World Heritage Site since 1988 – the time portal-like qualities of this spellbinding pocket of history are now world-renowned. You feel it from the moment you first step foot through the almost impregnable gates that are dotted around the austere 4km-long wall that contains the city. Inside those walls the city is divided into two very distinct parts: the compact Upper Town to the north, and the larger, more sprawling Lower Town to the south. For authentic crusader castles, unparalleled architectural history, imposing monuments and age-old streets, head straight to the Upper Town, entirely constructed by the Knights and home to their most impressive monument – the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes. Today you can still picture the knights of the 14th and 15th centuries filling the great vaulted halls and majestic courtyard of their headquarters with the clamour of medieval life. But that is not all – the Upper Town is bursting at the seams with things to see, including the incredible Street of the Knights, with its austere stone walls leaning in 28

Exploring the City of Knights takes you on a Medieval journey simply alive with history, from the incredible Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights in the upper town (figures 7 & 10), to the myriad of religious monuments in the lower town (figures 14, 15, 17, 18, 20 & 22).

from either side, arched windows and heavy gothic touches. Lying at the heart of the site as its main thoroughfare, the Street of the Knights is lined with the inns where each of the seven ‘tongues’ of the Order of the Knights would reside. On the south side of the street is the beautifully restored Great Hospital, and at the north, the great Inn of Auvergne, whose façade is adorned with an impressively ornate coat of arms. UNRAVELLING LAYERS OF HISTORY But what really adds that multilayered dimension that makes exploring the city so rewarding is the intricate jigsaw puzzle of history that is the Lower Town. 30

Here, reminders of the Knights’ occupation coexist side by side with remnants left by the many other cultures and civilisations who were also intent on leaving their own indelible marks on the city. Ancient Byzantine churches and Jewish Synagogues stand next to Islamic mosques and public bathhouses from the Ottoman period, which began in 1523 when the Knights were finally defeated by the fearsome Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The best way to experience the city and really soak up its unique atmosphere is to get lost in the maze of winding back streets, which will eventually lead out onto sun-drenched squares

where, come dusk, locals gather to share gossip over iced coffees. And indeed, witnessing the way that this part of the city shifts from day into night is a magical experience in itself. As the sun sets and the medieval stones are lit up, the city seems to glow under an enchanted fairytalelike spell that lasts long into the night, with restaurants, bars and nightclubs breathing youthful life and dynamism into a city so steeped in history. Athens may have the Acropolis, but the Medieval citadel of Rhodes leaves visitors with something equally special – a palpable feeling of times gone by, intricately merged with a vibrant and alluring contemporary scene.

Lifestyle blogger Maria Thomas shares her holiday diary of a beautiful family getaway at the Louis Paphos Breeze. Everyone needs some down time - dads, mums and children too. That's not an easy task when two out of three children have their own agendas! That’s why grabbing the family for a fantastic holiday together is my favourite time of year as we can really spend time making memories to cherish when they get older. This year, the five of us found time to catch up with each other’s lives bonding over family games and enjoying everything the Louis Paphos Breeze Hotel in Paphos, Cyprus, had to offer. From the moment we stepped foot into the hotel the children familiarised themselves with the staff who made us all feel we were at home away from home. The children soon acclimatised,

eating, snacking and drinking the whole time, spreading their wings around the spacious premises and facilities of the hotel! LUNCH WAS SO EASY AND CASUAL The children satisfied their own taste buds and we all ate something different! (so exciting for them because mummy doesn't do anything like this at home!). The buffet laid before us was a feast to say the least. I yearned to have two stomachs to enjoy both the sweet and savoury temptations. Watching my children strolling around the hotel gardens jumping into the pool laughing and playing with each other, it was clear that we had made the absolute best decision and their joy was music to my ears.

I REALLY ENJOYED THE AFTERNOON We found ourselves a cosy table in the lobby on the lower ground floor and played card games as a fam. Thank goodness for Paphos Breeze being kid friendly as my Alexis screamed with delight every time he beat us at UNO! He made quite a show for the staff around too! The kiddies drank freshly squeezed juices whilst hubs and I had a G&T before heading off to ‘Meze’, the hotel’s Greek tavern. A MEAL TO REMEMBER We had a culinary experience worth bragging about in terms of atmosphere and cuisine at ‘Meze’, which is an adapted version of the Cypriot meze at its finest. The food,
a modern twist on the traditional way locals know it, amazed us in both taste and presentation. The rocket and pastelaki salad along with the fried Manouri cheese was to die for. ENTERTAINMENT FOR YOUNG & NOT SO YOUNG After dinner, my children couldn’t wait to get to the musical show. They loved it and so did I (if you are staying at the Louis Paphos Breeze then don’t miss out on this hotel’s entertainment, it’s great!) We and the children were fully engrossed in the show which left them on a high, then off to bed we marched to enjoy our spacious room. KIDDO PARADISE The next morning I opened my eyes to find the kids missing! They had already gone for breakfast! They couldn’t bear to waste time locked up inside, so my three musketeers sorted themselves out. We managed to join them in time to share their food fest. From eggs to pancakes they had it all and I followed suit.
How is it that kids don’t get tired of swimming? Mine spent most of the morning jumping in and out of the water, splashing about and taking part in organised activities by the pool while I was sipping a Greek coffee and reading a book on my sunbed. Entertainment for the young with relaxation and rest for the old - what more could I ask for? Enjoying a stress-free and hassle-free break was pure bliss as it meant that hubby and I were also able to recharge our batteries, soaking up the sun in a chilledout, friendly environment, knowing the kids were kept entertained and happy. Roll on next year!
