Time to Party, Play and Camp! 'Tis the season when Central Florida families gear up for months of pool parties, traveling, new camps, looser schedules and an all-around less structured time of year. We always look forward to the summertime state of mind around our house as we give the kids (and ourselves) a break from the rat race. To help you transition into summer, we've put together a Summer PLAY List (page 36) as a go-to resource for things to do when it's time to get out of the house and enjoy the amazing amount of activities in the Orlando area. We've also partnered with Winter Park Village to create a three family events of our own this summer. Check out what we have in store in the Summer of PLAY advertisement on page 7. I hope you can come out to PLAY! We also have compiled a Party Guide on page 44 that is full of venues, services and locations for your next party. Whether it's a holiday celebration, birthday or milestone, you're sure to find something to raise the bar at your next shindig. Don't miss the travel stories to inspire and help you plan your next road trip or beach weekend getaway (starting on page 26). Have a great summer! PLAYfully Yours,

Mark your calendars... It’s going to be an epic year of celebration at Disney’s Hollywood Studios! This park has been undergoing major renovations — a facelift, one might say — for its 30th anniversary. New attractions such as Toy Story Land, Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy, the Disney Junior Dance Party and the Wonderful World of Animation projection show have already freshened up the park, making it feel like a new Disney experience. Oh, but Star Wars fans are anxiously awaiting the opening of the immersive new land, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which will open in phases starting on August 29, 2019 … so, mark your calendars! That’s not all — Disney’s Imagineers are also busy working on opening the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway ride in 2020. If you’re going to join the party, make sure you celebrate with new cocktails and sweets, including Kylo Ren cupcakes and lightsaber churros.

Safer Swimmers Start Now! The swim and water safety experts at Goldfish Swim School in Winter Park share practical tips and skills to keep kids safer around water.

Water safety impacts all Central Florida families. Drowning can be silent and quick, and it kills nearly 1,000 children every year. Drowning is the single leading cause of injury-related death among children ages 1 to 4. Many of these deaths occur when children are not expected to be swimming or when they have unanticipated access to water. Unfortunately, Florida continues to lead the country in child drownings. This statistic has to change! The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recently published updated recommendations on water safety. In the policy statement, the AAP lays out strategies to protect children at each stage of their life. The new AAP guidelines recommend getting children into swim lessons by age 1. The team at Goldfish Swim School Winter Park knows that the sooner kids develop critical water safety skills, the better. Goldfish Swim School provides swim instruction to children ages 4 months to 12 years in a unique indoor setting with highly trained instructors, small class sizes (max 4:1 student-teacher ratio), shiverfree 90-degree pools and a state-of-the-art water purification system. Gina Thomas, owner of Goldfish Swim School Winter Park says, “Learning to swim is a critical life skill. Getting kids into swim lessons at an early age can help reduce the risk of drowning. We love partnering with Central Florida families to make sure that our kids are safer around water.”

Every parent and caregiver needs to keep the following water safety tips in mind: •

Any time kids are around water, designate a “water watcher” who will avoid cell phones, conversations, magazines and anything else that might distract the adult from watching the children EVERY SINGLE SECOND. After all, most children who drown are supervised.

The American Red Cross says that the most important thing parents can do to keep kids safer in and around water is to enroll them in swim lessons by age 1.

Get swim lessons for yourself or any other caregiver who cannot swim or is afraid of water.

Realize that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are water toys, not life-saving devices. Life jackets should be designated as U.S. Coast Guard-approved.

Many drownings occur during non-swim times. Barriers are critical to prevent children from gaining access to pools or other bodies of water without adult supervision.

Eddie’s Greatest Showman Party A dog show, hand-lettered signage and a nod to everyone's favorite musical When it came time for Eddie’s 5th birthday, the family drew inspiration from The Greatest Showman as a modern way to include animals and Eddie’s love for singing and performing. The theme included elements of the movie but focused more on the circus than on the plot. The Ferris wheel bounce house, carnival games like “Down the Clown” and “Test Your Strength” and the Menestrelli Dog Show wowed all the party guests! Kids loved the circus-themed fare: corn dogs, hot dogs, pretzels, popcorn, cotton candy, snow cones and a self-serve lemonade or punch bar. The cake table featured an amazing cake and cupcakes, frosted cookies, chocolate-covered Oreos and popcorn-themed cake pops. When the dog show was over, guests were asked to “step right up” and fill their bag with a variety of items: an elephant figurine, Play-Doh, candy and the classic Barnum’s Animal Crackers.

Skyler’s Pegasus Rainbow Party Just add wings, rainbows and a horse painting activity to update the oh-so-popular unicorn theme with pegasus flair Winged ponies paired with pastel rainbows add a fresh feel to a popular party theme. The family chose Painted Oaks Academy, a horse ranch in East Orlando, as the party venue. Guests were guided to the oversized event barn, which was the home base for the day’s activities. The girls were introduced to Nugget, UCF’s official mascot, and then they geared up for guided horse rides around the barn. The barn decor brought the theme to life by layering different materials and textures. Satin, burlap, sequins and stripes added whimsy to this rustic location. After the horse rides, the girls played a lasso game before sitting down to lunch catered by Sonny’s BBQ. All guests enjoyed a relaxing hay ride to a beautiful meadow, where the girls hunted for peacock feathers. Then guests returned to the barn for cake and karaoke before getting creative with hand-painting the side of a horse with non-toxic paints! The party concluded with busting open the pegasus piñata. Gift bags included unicorn lip gloss, “You Are Magical” mini spiral notepad, Ring Pop and Unicorn Poopsie Slime Surprise.

So what could be more fun than combining both of those elements into a bright, active and fun Super Mario party! Upon arrival, guests received a Mario or Luigi visor and a stick-on mustache and then headed to the green screen photo booth for some silliness and fun. Next up was a visit from a video game truck and outdoor fun with an inflatable basketball game. After lunch, the guests teamed up for backyard laser tag followed by piñata fun. Let’s discover how you can work with our Disney creative team to find inspiration from the littlest detail to the largest prop to bring your dream event to life: Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Tea Party For a celebration that will completely immerse your guests, our Disney creative team can design a delightful event based on the classic, animated Disney film Alice in Wonderland. Our team specializes in designing immaculate events that will transport your attendees into the story with a mix of captivating props, themed backdrops, and an intricate level of detail in the setting and décor only found with Disney.

Alice in Wonderland’s Mad Tea Party

Beyond our access to stunning décor and unique entertainment, we are storytellers at heart, with world-class imagination to bring your dream event to life. Whether you have a theme in mind or not, we will work with you every step of the way to design the experience of a lifetime. Take the iridescent Under the Sea event concept for example. Our creative team was tasked with designing a themed birthday party experience fitting for two siblings – a boy and a girl! Taking inspiration from the popular Disney story Finding Nemo, our team crafted an ocean adventure complete with giant floating jellyfish, colorful centerpieces, seashells, and coral sculptures – a perfect combination of themes and storytelling. We invite you to use our imagination, because at Disney, we specialize in creating one-of-a-kind events that tell your one-of-a-kind story.

Transform Your Event into an Enchanted Garden We don’t always use Disney inspired themes to create events– sometimes, a celebration may call for a sophisticated, yet whimsically immersive event such as an Enchanted Garden theme. Our Disney creative team designed this event to transform the venue from floor to ceiling into a beautiful evening in an elegant garden. Whimsical, twinkling lights, the garden gazebo and lush greenery around the venue add to the sophisticated setting. With our creative team’s attention to engage every sense, the smallest details are truly what brings this event to life for an unforgettable celebration.

Headed West An Orlando to Oregon Family Road Trip Words and photos by Kristen Manieri

Last summer, we crossed something epic off of our family bucket list: we went on a 101-day road trip with our kids ... and survived! Crazy, right? After over a year of saving and months of planning, we hopped in our car and headed west, with stops (and Airbnb reservations) in Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, California and Oregon. Along the way, we picked up enough know-how to help families plan a kid-friendly trip at any of our three major stops. Plus, our car travel skills are now master level. Read on for tips on planning your own adventure!

AUSTIN, TEXAS Known for the annual South by Southwest Conference & Festival, this selfproclaimed “live music capital of the world” might not seem like a hotspot for traveling families, but the city could not be more welcoming to kids and their grown-ups. One of America’s largest cities, Austin has it all: amazing food, lots of outdoorsy elements and plenty of indoor attractions that are great for taking shelter during the sweltering Texas summers.

MUST DO Lake Travis Located about an hour from downtown Austin and flanked by million-dollar homes, Lake Travis is the perfect place for boating and swimming on a hot summer day. Best of all — no alligators! We grabbed sandwiches from a local sub shop, filled a cooler with water and enjoyed four hours of fun in the sun on the 12-person pontoon boat we rented from Just for Fun Watercraft Rental (jff.net). Without question, this was one of the highlights of our entire summer. Austin Aquarium Arriving in the parking lot of a strip plaza and gazing at the exterior, Austin Aquarium (austinaquarium.com) looks more like a fish store than a place you could spend a few hours exploring with your kiddos. But judge a book by its cover and you might miss the heaps of interactive fun awaiting inside. What the Austin Aquarium lacks in square footage, it makes up for in experiences — it’s one of the few aquariums we’ve ever visited that allows you to feed most of the animals. For an extra fee, your budding zoologists will be able to feed stingrays, sharks, iguanas, tortoises, lorikeets and more.

The Bat Bridge Each year, the Ann W. Richards Congress Avenue Bridge houses millions of migrating Mexican free-tailed bats who call the bridge home while giving birth and nursing their babies. While bats live there all year long, the highest concentration is found from mid-March to mid-April and again in late July, when the bat pups are learning to fly. Call the “bat hotline” at 512-3279721 for the most up-to-date details. Head to the bridge or nearby grassy areas within 30 minutes of sundown to see the unforgettable mass exodus or hop on a bat-watching tour with Capital Cruises (capitalcruises.com) or Lone Star Riverboat (lonestarriverboat.com). SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIFORNIA Peruse through photos of shimmering Lake Tahoe on Instagram, and you’ll instantly be lured. The largest alpine lake in North America and possibly the coldest, Lake Tahoe is just so freaking gorgeous. For the outdoorsy family, South Lake Tahoe is a flawless destination where unspoiled waters and impeccably planned hiking and biking trails make for days of endless activity. If you’re flying, go direct through Reno, NV versus Sacramento, CA. (It’s a much easier drive from Nevada to South Lake Tahoe.) MUST DO Cycle the Trails Rent your single or tandem bike from Anderson’s Bike Rental (andersonsbicyclerental.com), and you’ll be a stone’s throw from the National Forest Bike Trail, set away from the road traffic. Meander along the paved pathway and stop at numerous attractions along the way, including Pope Beach, Camp Richardson Resort’s Ice Cream Parlor and Rainbow Trail, where you can hop off and go on a short but beautiful hike. Afterward, grab a gourmet burger at the Burger Lounge.

Heavenly Ski Resort Lack of snow doesn’t stop this South Lake Tahoe ski spot from being a ton of fun in the summer months. Ride the gondola up to the peak and then hop off for a day filled with ropes courses, zip lining, tubing, mountain coasters and gemming. You’ll need to make reservations a few weeks in advance because only a limited number of guests are allowed on the mountain each day. Squaw Valley Home to the 1960 Winter Olympics, Squaw Valley boasts a slew of adventurous activities for all ages. Hop on the aerial tram 2,000 feet up the mountain, and after oohing and ahhing over the epic views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding mountains, hop off to enjoy hiking, swimming, roller skating and a visit the Olympic Museum.

ALSO TRY: • Rent a kayak at Emerald Bay State Park. • For a beach day, try Pope Beach, which is accessible by car or bike. • It’s also fun to hike to Angora Lake, affectionately nicknamed “Lemonade Lake.” Angora Lake has a small outpost where you can buy fresh lemonade and sandwiches and rent kayaks and stand-up paddleboards (angoralakesresort.com).

PORTLAND, OREGON A jewel of the Pacific Northwest, Portland’s mountainous and hilly landscape could not be more of a contrast to Orlando’s flatness. Its urban center is teaming with great restaurants and activities like museums and urban trails, but the moment you step outside of the city, you’ll be enveloped by forests, rivers and waterfalls. You’ve never breathed air this fresh. MUST DO

Multnomah Falls Located along the Columbia River Gorge less than an hour’s drive from downtown Portland, Multnomah Falls is an iconic must-see during your stay in the area. Forest fires damaged the best hiking routes a few years ago, but you can still enjoy the path up to the waterfall lookout and take some great family photos. At the base, you’ll find Multnomah Falls Lodge, which has a great gift shop, bathrooms and a restaurant that serves a stellar brunch buffet on Sundays from 8 a.m.–2 p.m. Since you’re going to want to arrive at the Multnomah Falls parking lot around 8 a.m. anyway (otherwise you won’t get a spot and will have to shuttle in from nearby lots), it’s a great idea to pair up the experience with breakfast.

Lan Su Chinese Garden This meticulously manicured oasis in the heart of Portland’s downtown core is stunningly beautiful and makes for a lovely half-day excursion for families. It’s especially memorable if you take the time to enjoy a traditional Chinese tea in the garden’s picturesque, two-story teahouse. Enjoy the fine woodwork and hushed milieu as you sip tea and snack on everything from edamame and dumplings to cookies and mooncakes. The Oregon Museum of Science & Industry (OMSI) Perched on the Willamette River and boasting thousands of square feet of interactive and playful exhibits, the OMSI offers a full day of diversions to delight your crew’s curious minds. Besides a theater and a regularly rotating array of traveling exhibits, you’ll find more than 200 interactive experiences spanning its five halls. There’s also a riverfront restaurant where you can reboot partway through the day.

Flagstaff/Sedona, AZ –Grand Canyon –Slide Rock State Park –Bearizona Wildlife Park

4. San Francisco, CA –Golden Gate Park (including the California Academy of Sciences and Japanese Tea Garden) –Fisherman’s Wharf

ALSO TRY: • Considered to be the world’s largest independent bookstore, Powell’s Books is a book lovers’ dream. Expertly organized over multiple floors, the book selection is seemingly endless. Plan to spend at least two hours wandering around. A quick dash in and out wouldn’t give you the full experience. • Experience a tea tasting at Smith Tea’s, which is headquartered in an industrial area in downtown Portland. You can peek through the glass and see the operations

happening beyond the tasting rooms, learn about their process and sip and snack in a quiet little corner of downtown. Be sure to try their Meadow tea. A more fragrant version of chamomile, it’s like relaxation in a cup. MUST EAT: We didn’t have a single bad meal in Portland, but these are a few of our absolute favorites: • Ava Green’s • Ruby Jewel • Salt & Straw • Blue Star Donuts

Florida Island Escapes A colorful variety of island destinations fringe the Florida peninsula, offering hundreds of miles of beaches for families to explore. Here are our top 3 picks, all within driving distance from Orlando. Words by Megan Padilla | Photos by Visit Florida

#1 Melbourne Shores

An escape for budding naturalists Look up Melbourne Beach on a map, and then scan south along the barrier island to Sebastian Inlet State Park. You'll see a peppering of sanctuaries, refuges and preserves along this 17-mile stretch that divides the Atlantic Ocean from the Indian River Lagoon, offering an unexpected bounty of nature. More loggerhead and green sea turtles return here to build their nests on these beaches than anywhere in the U.S. — we’re talking tens of thousands of turtle nests!

Here are our favorite ways to play and places to stay in Melbourne Shores.

PLAY • Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge offers educational programming, including guided night-time sea turtle watch programs in June and July and a chance to see hatchlings emerge from their nests during the turtle dig programs in August and early September.

• Sebastian Inlet State Park is a something-for-everyone gem. Families love a beach day at the tidal cove, a shallow beach area that faces the north side of the inlet. Feed your troops at BG's Surfside Grill & Adventures. Take a break and go see treasure and relics from a 1715 shipwreck at the McLarty Treasure Museum located just south of the park. • It doesn’t get more “Old Florida” than a visit to Honest John’s Fish Camp, homesteaded in the 1880s and passed down to a fourth generation. It’s tucked away on the shore of Mullet Creek near the Indian River Lagoon Preserve State Park. Roosters as well as a pet pig named Gator roam the property. You can rent canoes, kayaks and paddle-boards to explore the canals around Mullet Creek or go all-in and rent a fishing boat. Treat your budding naturalists to a twohour wildlife cruise with Captain Clark. PLAY Tip: Book a sunrise tour to see the animals waking up and hunting for breakfast. Call Honest John’s (321-727-2923) to reserve a tour for up to six guests.

32 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2019

• Barrier Island Education Center is an interactive education center dedicated to the creatures and ecosystems of the Indian River Lagoon. Kids love to press the buttons to hear the sounds made by critters like a bottlenose dolphin or an oyster toadfish. Not gonna lie; some of them sound like farts (yes, it’s funny!). Find current events (such as a dune-to-lagoon hike with a naturalist or upcycling materials into a bird feeder) on their Facebook page. They also offer an Eco-Explorers Summer Camp each week in June for ages 9 to 15. Campers experience a sea turtle encounter, snorkeling, kayaking, paddle-boarding and more. Call 321-723-3556 for details.

STAY Mostly mom-and-pop hotels line this section of A1A. Check out the 2-bedroom efficiencies at Seashell Suites, which offers a pool and a boardwalk down to a quiet beach. A few miles north of the Melbourne Causeway, there is a cluster of branded hotels, such as the Hilton Melbourne Beach Oceanfront and its sister property DoubleTree Suites, where every guest room is a two-room suite with an ocean view.

LOVE // Florida Island Escapes

#2 St. George Island Relax on the shores of the Panhandle St. George Island is on the Gulf Coast offshore of Apalachicola. Its Old Florida roots haven’t changed much since the bridge to the island was built in 1965. Multi-generational families and groups of friends rent large beach houses and come for a blissful week of exploring the sugar-sand beaches on the Gulf side and the pristine wetlands of Apalachicola Bay on the other.

PLAY The folks at Journeys of St. George Island offer a wide menu of guided eco-activities for the whole family. Outings designed for kids guarantee they’ll return wet, dirty and smiling. Take the whole family on a boating excursion to Little St. George Island to search for some of Florida’s prettiest shells and relax as you fish for supper. The days are sun-drenched, and the nights are star-filled ... stargazing is big on the island because there is so little light pollution!

STAY Collins Vacation Rentals offers an enormous inventory that includes everything from cozy condos to multi-bedroom houses with private pools. Homes on the far west end of the island are more secluded in a gated community called The Plantation. Staying closer to the center of the island is more convenient and saves time if you plan to drive the 14 miles over to historic Apalachicola for sightseeing, shopping and dining.

#3 Clearwater Beach A bustling hot spot Clearwater Beach lands at the top of any “Best Beaches” list, not only for its soft, powdery sand and idyllic turquoise water but also for its active beach culture. There are tons of restaurants, shops and resorts all in walkable distance from each other, but there's also a free ferry that will take you to the furthest ends.

PLAY Families love the daily Sunset Festival at Pier 60, which features street performers, craft vendors, a playground and even free outdoor movies (weekends only). Families can board Captain Memo’s Pirate Cruise for a sunset sail on a pirate ship that shoots off cannons and entertains the kids for the entire cruise! No visit is complete without meeting Florida’s most famous dolphins, Winter and Hope from the film Dolphin Tale, at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. When you go, make reservations for the Sea Life Safari pontoon boat tour to island-hop the intracoastal waterway while shelling and spotting wildlife.

Wyndham Clearwater Beach Resort and Hyatt Regency Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa are full-service beach resorts at the center of the action but are located across the street from the beach. Beachfront properties are Hilton Clearwater Beach Resort & Spa on the north side of Pier 60 and Opal Sands Resort on the south side. Certain views from the Opal Sands Resort make you feel as though you’re on a cruise ship looking out to the open sea. Are you ready for a change of scenery where daily rhythms are built around morning walks on the beach and evenings spent relaxing around a fire pit rather than a television? Florida’s islands are the perfect place to unplug and reconnect with family, nature and even yourself.

FIND HIDDEN TREASURE ON THE FLORIDA TRAIL A great section of the Florida Trail runs right through the Little Big Econ State Forest in Oviedo. It’s one of the best hikes in Central Florida for families with kids age 7 and up. Why do we consider this a kid-friendly hike, you ask? For starters, it's an exciting 2.4-mile trail (not too long for the littles) with great canopy coverage for most of the trail, protecting hikers from sun exposure. Plus, there are several interesting things to see along the way to keep kids excited, including a small waterfall, a few walking bridges and a high vantage point along the surprisingly tall banks of the Econ River. There's a little beach oasis along the river where families can stop and play (just keep an eye out for gators). We've also enjoyed swinging from giant vines that hang from the canopy and collecting air plants during our treks. Getting there: Bring two cars. Park one at the Barr Street Trailhead parking lot (off Geneva Drive) so it's waiting for you at the end of your hike. Then jump in the second car and drive to the the area where Evans Boulevard dead-ends at Lockwood Boulevard. Begin your hike at the Florida Trail marker there. Happy trails! Florida Trail, Oviedo Florida Trail, Oviedo

• PLAY Tip: Download a geocaching app to look for hidden treasures. There are several caches hidden along the trail. Bring some old trinkets to follow the "take a treasure; leave a treasure" concept of geocaching. floridahikes.com 36 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2019
