The 32nd Annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival of the Arts and Humanities Zora Neale Hurston, a Southern African American culture writer and Harlem Renaissance influencer, grew up in Eatonville, Florida. This town located just north of Orlando is the setting of much of her writing, including what is often considered her best-known work, Their Eyes Were Watching God. Eatonville is also the setting of the annual Zora Neale Hurston Festival that celebrates Zora's life and the impact she had on Southern African American culture and the cultural contributions that all people of African descent have had on the United States and worldwide. The format of this year's festival is a special "hybrid event" with virtual and in-person programming that will follow CDC guidelines.

What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been I'm guessing we're all pretty relieved to put an end to the year that will no doubt go down in history as the most stressful in our lifetime. So glad we made it (albeit barely, for some of us). My husband argues that the silver linings are important to remember: extra time with our kids, more time outdoors and the conservation of toilet paper, of course. All good things that we should notice and appreciate in spite of the pandemic. How about gifting yourself a stress-free holiday? Is that possible? Yes, but you'll probably need to make some mindful decisions to do so. I'm calling it "Corona Christmas" — in my mind, that means we make do, lower our expectations and simplify. Go ahead and do that for yourself. You deserve it! What would be your ideal stress-free holiday? Where would you spend it? Who would you spend it with? What would you do? Would you spend the day cooking? Or would you spend the day playing instead (and have the food catered)? Would you start new traditions or end old ones that don't serve you anymore? The end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 is a great time to rebuild everything, one brick at a time — slowly and thoughtfully with a renewed perspective that only a worldwide pandemic can bring. I'm starting with rebuilding the relationship with myself, living more slowly and consciously. These are the growing lessons I learned during 2020 and the ones I plan to focus on in 2021. Thank you for following along and supporting PLAYGROUND Magazine this year. We love our readers and work hard on every issue to bring the most important information to local parents. Each issue is a gift to you. Enjoy!

Mr. Richard’s New Album Is a Nature-Loving Family’s Dream Words by Amanda Green

T

oddlers and preschoolers sit crisscross applesauce listening to a man strum a guitar while singing about something silly. He transitions to the next song, and they all get up and start wiggling around the room. It’s a typical Mr. Richard show; the singer/ songwriter has been entertaining families in Central Florida for two decades. Parents with multiple children know his music well. New parents smile when they’re introduced to it. Now, families will have new songs to bobble and bounce to as Mr. Richard releases his first new album in nine years. Mr. Richard and the Pound Hounds’ Feather, Bone and Stone is a kid-friendly extravaganza featuring simple songs, many with a nature theme. “There’s a Zoo In Your Backyard” teaches toddlers about the birds, squirrels, lizards and other critters they might find on a nature walk; “My Name Is Litter” teaches kids to use a trashcan; “Gravity” explains the basic rule of science; and parents may appreciate “Grown-Up Talk” as much as the kids do with funny lyrics about the boring way grown-ups talk to each other for seemingly forever. Richard Peeples was dubbed “Mr. Richard” 20 years ago when he first began performing in local libraries as a storyteller. He started bringing his guitar and eventually began writing his own songs because he got tired of doing “Old MacDonald” all the time. “I didn’t consciously think of it at the time, but there wasn’t anybody doing anything like this back then outside of Disney,” he says. His work at the library inspired him to write his first CD and go out on his own. He regularly performs for captive young audiences at birthday parties, neighborhood festivals and community events. “Kids are like the best audience for a musician because they’re ready for whatever you want to do. They don’t text on their phone while you’re performing and ignore you. They’re involved in whatever you’re doing.”

I didn’t write anything for a couple of years.” But eventually a little girl celebrating a birthday re-lit the creative spark. “Her name is Tessa, and her mom contacted me, and she said, ‘The theme is cowgirls, and Tessa wants to know if you have any songs about cowgirls.’ … I don’t know how to say no to a little girl, so I wrote one about a cowgirl named Tessa from Odessa just for her. And I liked it enough to say, ‘You know, I could still do this.’ ” Shortly after that, the national pandemic hit. Suddenly, all of his bookings – the birthday parties, music days, family events – were all canceled. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. “I’m glad I had the album to work on. It was already in progress, so I was actually able to focus on that a little bit more than I would have.” Mr. Richard finished writing and recording the album over the summer. Now that live events are slowly come back into existence, you’ll once again find him in the community performing new songs alongside classic favorites. “What’s great is that the audience keeps changing. There are always new kids, and there are always plenty of families to play for around town.” You can see Mr. Richard’s calendar or book him for a private event by visiting his website: mrrichard.net.

Feather, Bone and Stone is Mr. Richard’s sixth album overall, but his first to be released in nine years. He took a hiatus from writing to take care of his wife, who sadly passed away from cancer. “When she passed away, I just didn’t have anything in the tank, you know?

The Bridge Program Develops Students with Dyslexia into Confident Readers The Christ School (TCS), an independent, Christ-centered Transitional Kindergarten–8th grade school located in downtown Orlando, opened the 2020-2021 school year with a new program, The Bridge, to serve students with dyslexia. Students from across Central Florida have joined The Christ School community to take part in this unique program. “We discovered there were few options in Orlando for students with dyslexia to have the daily reading support and multisensory instruction they need to thrive as confident readers,” says Dr. Aaron Farrant, Head of School. “To help these children, we created The Bridge.” Students in The Christ School’s Bridge program enjoy the same project-based learning curriculum as traditional learners as well as daily chapel, special area classes, sports, grade-level field trips, after school academies and daily recess. The difference is The Bridge classrooms are built for the dyslexic mind to grow and thrive. Bridge teachers are highly trained in the Orton Gillingham (OG) approach to teaching reading and provide a unique, specialized program of instruction that meets the individual learner’s needs. Through this proven, systematic approach to reading, what can appear to be an arbitrary and confusing system to a child with dyslexia becomes predictable and clear. Through multisensory practice and specialized instruction, dyslexic learners at The Christ School unlock the power of print. Teachers design lesson plans based on careful observation and error analysis. Instruction addresses specific challenges unique to each student as opposed to delivering a scripted “one size fits all” program. Bridge classrooms

offer a 1:10 teacher/student ratio with small breakout groups hosting a 1:5 teacher/student ratio for OG reading and math instruction. These small groups allow for individualized, diagnostic and prescriptive instruction. “Students with dyslexia have many God-given strengths and talents,” says Alissa Plaisance, Director of The Bridge. “Through The Bridge, we foster confidence and self-esteem by helping students recognize their strengths and thrive as readers and learners.” Heather Webb, second grade Bridge parent, says, “The Bridge at The Christ School has brought hope and confidence to my bright young son William. He is excited to go to school each day. His confidence has soared as he has learned about his superpower dyslexia. As a parent, witnessing the positive changes and transformation from being in an environment that values and supports your child’s abilities has been an absolute blessing. I will be forever grateful to The Christ School and their faculty and staff.” The Christ School is accepting applications for the 2021-2022 school year in both our traditional and Bridge programs. The Bridge currently serves students in 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. 5th grade will be added with the 2021-2022 year. Contact Joanne Fleming, Director of Admission, at 407-849-1665 or by email at jfleming@ thechristschool.org to schedule a personalized tour. Finding the Right Preschool When it’s time to search for the perfect preschool for your little one, you want to be sure you’re making the right decision. Here are some tips to help you find the right fit. Words by Jan Pierce, M.Ed.

Photo: iStock.com | Weekend Images Inc.

Where to Begin?

Questions to Ask

Be sure you start your search early. Many excellent preschools have waiting lists. Look for a preschool that provides the following:

Here are some questions to ask before visiting schools, to help narrow your search:

• Proximity to your home and/or your workplace • A solid reputation and up-to-date accreditation and licensing, including proof of state approval • Clear rules and regulations, health/illness policies and pick-up/drop-off times • Clean, well-kept facilities with adequate indoor and outdoor play areas

• Is there currently room for my child? Is there a waiting list? • What are the fees? How and when are we billed? • How do you communicate with parents? • What is your staff to student ratio? • Do your staff members have credentials and training? Are they backgroundchecked? Up-to-date on CPR?

• Qualified, caring staff

• What is your educational philosophy? (academic-oriented, play-based, etc.)

• Stimulating curriculum and ageappropriate toys

• What are your health/hygiene standards? (immunizations, hand-washing, etc.)

• A philosophy and climate pleasing to you and right for your child’s temperament

• How do you handle discipline? • Are meals and snacks provided? Is there naptime? • What security precautions are in place? • Can you provide a sample of your weekly curriculum and activities? 20 PLAYGROUND Dec 2020 / Jan 2021

As you gather the information, you’ll be able to narrow your list down to two or three good choices. When you’re ready, schedule a visit to the school. You’ll want to get a “feel” for the school. Do you feel welcome? Are the children busy and engaged in work or play? Is the facility pleasing to the eye and orderly? Do you get the sense that you’d feel comfortable leaving your child in this school’s care. Are the children happy? Jot down your first impressions and any new information you find during the visit. If you don’t feel comfortable with the school environment for any reason, trust your instincts and look for another school. All the time and effort you put into your search will pay huge dividends in a happy, healthy and well-cared for child.

PRESCHOOL VISIT CHECKLIST: Quality preschools will have printed material for you to study when making your school choice. YES NO

Do the stated learning goals match mine? Do the goals address all areas of my child’s development, including social play, control of emotions, language skills, learning letters and numbers, and engaging in science, art and physical development? Am I comfortable with the school’s discipline policies? Is the school licensed by the state? Is it accredited by a national association like the NAEYC? Does the lead teacher have a bachelor’s degree or certification in early childhood education? Are support workers trained? Is there one adult for every 10 children? Are there separate learning centers for various activities such as art, reading, dramatic play, writing, etc.? Does the school use a well-known, quality curriculum to prepare children for kindergarten? Does the class follow a daily routine that offers a variety of activities? Do the children play both outdoors and inside? Are parents free to drop in without making an appointment? Does the school have a means of regularly communicating with parents? Do they report the activities of the past week or month? Do you feel welcome? Are the teachers warm and caring with the children? Do they have conversations with the children as they work or play? Are the children happy and engaged? Do children have the opportunity to choose their activities part of the time? Are the children talking and interacting with each other? Are books and read-alouds a regular part of the day? Are children’s artwork and other work samples displayed? Are the furniture, equipment and toys age-appropriate? In good working condition? As you check yes or no to each of these questions, decide which of them are deal-breakers for your family and which are not as important. Jot down notes as they occur to you, and feel free to ask more questions of the staff and administrators.

Finding the Right Preschool (continued) PRESCHOOL VOCABULARY Becoming familiar with the following terms may help you make your preschool decision. • The Montessori Method: Focuses on maintaining the individuality of each child in the learning process. Children learn at their own individual pace, and students are not compared to one another. Teachers are specially trained at Montessori institutes. • The Reggio Emilia Approach: Focuses on providing opportunities for problem-solving through creative thinking and exploration. • The Waldorf Approach: Emphasizes imagination in learning, providing students with opportunities to explore their world through their senses, participation and analytical thought. • The Bank Street Approach: Emphasizes learning through multiple perspectives, both in the classroom setting and outdoors. • The High/Scope Approach: Allows children to be in charge of their own learning. They’re taught to make a plan for each day’s activities and participate in review sessions as they plan and brainstorm for the next day’s work. • Child-centered: Describes a method that takes the children’s interests into account when planning activities. The child is allowed to choose. • Teacher-led: The adult selects and leads the lessons. • Child-led: This method is anchored in the belief that children learn best when they are engaged and interested. It allows for a high degree of child initiation and focuses on individualized learning experiences rather than group work. • Faith-based: Describes preschool programs run by faith organizations such as churches and synagogues. • Co-operative: Parents and families assist in running the program. They may sign up to volunteer during the week. • Developmentally appropriate: This school plans the curriculum and activities based on the age of the children in the class. • Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK): This term may be used interchangeably with "preschool". Children in Florida can be enrolled in this free program when they are 4 years old. VPK is offered at private preschools, daycares and some public elementary schools. The focus of VPK programs is preparing children for kindergarten. • Transitional Kindergarten (TK): This is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. TK is designed for students who will benefit from experiencing kindergarten over an expanded time frame, allowing the child to mature and grow in all areas of development and learning. Many students who participate in TK will turn 5 years old during the summer or right before the start of the school year, just making the kindergarten cut-off. In this scenario, some parents may choose a TK program.

The Art of the Thank You Note Words by Tiffany Doerr Guerzon The art of the handwritten thank you note seems to be quickly fading into the past, but writing thank you notes is a useful exercise for children. It helps instill the message that receiving a gift is a privilege. Creating a written message also forces kids to sit down and think about the person who gave the gift. Writing longhand can also improve small-motor skills in younger kids as well as spark creative thinking in all ages.

MAKE IT FUN

WRITE A BOILERPLATE

So how can parents encourage this practice? By making it fun instead of a dreaded task! Try putting together a thank you note kit. Grab a lidded box (a shoebox works well) and put in some blank note cards, envelopes and postage stamps. Then cruise the aisles of the dollar store or the craft store for inspiring art supplies to decorate those notes.

Helping a younger elementary school child write a note can be monotonous for both of you. Consider writing out a “boilerplate” thank you message on a 4×6-inch card and placing the card in a stand-alone Lucite frame. This goes in the box with everything else and comes out again when it is time for writing. • Dear (blank),

WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR THANK YOU NOTE KIT: • Colored and metallic markers • Stamps and stamp pad or self-inking stamps • Stickers • White glue, glitter • Colored pencils, crayons • Chalk and oil pastels

• Thank you for the (blank). • Love, (name) For pre-writers, write out the basic message yourself and allow the child to decorate the card with art supplies. They should sign their own name if they are able. Elementary school-age kids can copy the basic message and personalize the card with artwork. Encourage older children to make their notes personal by writing down at least one thing they liked about the gift. Kids will probably still need a nudge to get going on those notes, but a thank you note kit will make it much more fun for the kids and easier for the parent. Relatives who receive these personal notes will surely find them priceless.

10 Commandments forMore Holiday Cheer

Photo: iStock.com | Tavarak

Words by Christa Melnyk Hines

Want to experience a more joyful holiday season this year that doesn’t leave you depleted, miserable and broke? Here are 10 ways to shift your perspective and take command of this “hap-happiest” time of the year!

34 PLAYGROUND Dec 2020 / Jan 2021

4 1

2

3

Thou shall quit worshipping perfection. Nothing burns holes into the fantasy holiday like real life. Maybe the tree is a lopsided, the dog ate your 7-year-old’s gingerbread house or you were so focused on creating the best holiday ever that you ended up too sick to enjoy it when the big day finally arrived. “Decide to do things differently this year. Strive for the good and be satisfied with the good. Too often, the focus is on the result, and we tend to lose focus on the beautiful process of getting to the result,” says therapist Julia Flynn, LCPC, CRADC.

5

Decide ahead of time which activities won’t work this year. Instead of committing to five parties and multiple gift exchanges, choose a few that you’re enthusiastic about attending.

“Sometimes we need to take a step back and ask ourselves why this time of year is important to us because I think ‘the why’ gets lost. It just becomes an expectation of self and family— or whoever— to have it look a certain way,” says Maki Moussavi, a transformational coach, speaker and author of The High Achievers Guide: Transform your Success Mindset and Begin the Quest to Fulfillment. “Take a step back to assess from an intangible, emotional perspective why the holidays are important.”

Simple ways to recharge include a warm bath, watching a favorite TV show, a walk outside, curling up with a juicy novel, a nap or a massage.

Thou shall honor thy family. Attempts to please others by saying yes to everyone else’s holiday gatherings without taking into account you and your family’s desires can cause undue anxiety, frustration and resentment.

For those events that you’d like to attend but can’t, firmly communicate to your extended family or friends that you value time spent with them and would like to discuss alternative ideas for getting together. And don’t feel guilty about standing by your decisions.

“Be firm, decisive and assertive, always coming from a place of love for everyone and keeping the focus on the origin of the holidays,” Flynn says, who specializes in helping women manage anxiety, depression and holiday overwhelm. “Graciously decline and send a nice card or note.”

Take time to re-evaluate your priorities. How do you want the season to feel? What do you want your kids to remember most?

Self-care is essential all year long, but especially during the extra busy holidays when your stress level is more likely to sky-rocket. Pare down your list to what reasonably makes sense for your health, time and emotional well-being. Practice restorative techniques that relax and re-energize you.

“The holidays are about family time, appreciating one another and caring for each other. If the focus is switched to the less important gift exchanges and gatherings, all planned at the same time, you can’t enjoy the experience and the original meaning is lost,” Flynn says.

Thou shall not overcommit.

Thou shall rediscover “the why.”

Thou shall rest.

“You have every right in the world to establish what you want your holiday tradition to be. You are not obligated to participate in somebody else’s version of the season,” Moussavi says.

6

Thou shall invite thy partner’s participation. If you feel overwhelmed and stressed because you’re trying to manage the bulk of holiday prep on top of working and taking care of your family, ask your spouse for help. Discuss what you’d both like the season to look and feel like. “Sometimes it’s not that men don’t want to be involved. It’s that they are never invited to be, and they don’t ask,” Moussavi says. Maybe your husband can mail the packages for out of town family, purchase tickets to the holiday play your family wants to see or take charge of a few of the gifts.

LOVE

7

Thou shall not allow others to steal thy happiness. Plan ahead for those individuals who love to bait you into an upsetting conversation at annual gatherings. Since you know how the person is likely to behave, rehearse how you will respond when they pounce. “The only thing you can do is get better at making it clear what you will and won’t tolerate,” Moussavi says. “You have to shut it down. You standing up for yourself is normal, empowered adult behavior.” Arm yourself with responses like, “I’m here to enjoy myself. I don’t want to talk about that right now.” Or, “Let’s agree to disagree.”

8 9 10

Also, physically exit from the situation by saying, “I’m going to go refresh my drink.” Or, “I have to make a call.”

Thou shall simplify. “The holiday can be manageable and simple if we allow it to be,” Flynn says. “What makes the holiday so difficult is our own thinking about it. We make it difficult for ourselves.” Experiment with small changes that can relieve your stress. Hire a caterer for your party. Forgo Christmas cards this year. For the relative who has everything, send flowers or make a donation in their name to an organization that is important to them.

Thou shall not compete with thy neighbors. As Theodore Roosevelt once quipped, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” Some people enjoy casting their home in a professionally created holiday glow, while others prefer to hang a festive wreath on their door and call it good. Do what brings you pleasure and makes sense for your budget.

Thou shall give from thy heart. Rather than twisting yourself in knots seeking the perfect present for everyone on your list, take a more light-hearted approach to gift-giving. For example, give a t-shirt with a meaningful quote, a digital photo album commemorating a fun getaway or an experience like tickets to the zoo or a concert. Volunteering your time is also a fulfilling way to give. “If you are intentional, you can make the holidays about the ideas of love, caring for one another, understanding, enjoying quality time together and treating each other as the precious beings we are,” Flynn says.

DIY: Peppermint Dandies

HOT COCOA Cozy up with a big ol' mug of Peppermint Dandies Hot Cocoa and feel better about the world. Recipe by Chelsie Jangord | Photo: Dandies

Ingredients: • 1 handful of Dandies Peppermint Marshmallows • 4 tbsp. cocoa powder • 2 cups non-dairy milk • 4 tbsp. sugar • ½ tsp. peppermint extract • Crushed peppermint candies (optional) • Melted chocolate, optional garnish

Instructions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

In a saucepan turned on medium heat, combine milk, cocoa powder, sugar and peppermint extract. Whisk until all clumps have dissolved. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat. For extra yumminess, dip the rim of a mug in melted chocolate, then in the crushed peppermint candies. Fill with hot cocoa and top with Peppermint Dandies Marshmallows and enjoy!

A Better Marshmallow Dandies Marshmallows are made with no artificial flavors or colors, corn syrup, gelatin or gluten. These plant-based marshmallows are Non-GMO Projectverified and kosher. Traditional marshmallows are loaded with unnatural ingredients and made with gelatin (a yucky animal-based ingredient—look it up!). These familyfavorite treats desperately needed an ingredient-list makeover. Dandies Marshmallows are indistinguishable from conventional marshmallows. The light and fluffy marshies are perfect for roasting over a campfire, putting in hot chocolate (or coffee—try it!), classic crispy treats, s'mores or straight out of the bag! 38 PLAYGROUND Dec / Jan 2020
