Summer is here! While there are plenty of sunny days ahead, Central Florida parents also know that it’s the season for afternoon thunderstorms. But don't let a little rain stop the fun! PLAYGROUND turned to Sharla Feldscher, author of the new book KIDFUN: 401 Easy Ideas for Play, for some inspiration. Her philosophy is that you can occupy children’s time creatively — and completely screen-free — with stuff you already have at home, whether it’s mixing bowls or measuring cups from the kitchen, odds and ends from the junk drawer, or old scarves and shoes from the closet. “Let KIDFUN throw the switch on creative thinking for play but definitely encourage kids to come up with their own ideas as well,” says Sharla. Summer Break Is Here! No matter how old you are, there’s nothing better than summer break. It’s the time of year to unwind, hang out with family and friends, eat all the ice cream you can and hopefully take a vacation (or two). What’s even better about this coming June and July is that life is slowly returning to normal, so you can finally plan to do things outside the confines of your own home. That’s why Chris Karel’s piece “Florida's Best Family Resorts” on page 22 is a must-read since it gives you the DL on the resorts that you and your kiddos will love. My daughter isn’t even one yet and I’ve already bookmarked some of these resorts to take her to when she’s older — I mean how can you go wrong with an aquarium you can swim in? For more local excursions, “Choose Your Own Summer Adventure” on page 33 is a comprehensive activity guide that ranges from thrill-seeking day trips to animal encounters. This issue of PLAYGROUND also includes ways you can turn your backyard into a summertime oasis (page 16) and our annual Party Guide that includes all your celebration planning needs (page 44). Personally, my summer bucket list includes lots of pool time, a few frozen beverages and making lots of memories celebrating my baby’s first birthday. Whatever your own bucket list entails, we hope this issue inspires you to infuse a little more fun into the next few months since we all deserve a break! PLAYfully yours,

The Best Sun Protection on the Block Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin

One of the more trying tasks as a parent is applying sunscreen to a wiggly, impatient kid who would rather be cannonballing into the pool than getting lathered up. While sunscreen is necessary protection against sunburns (and future skin cancer), there are a few things you can do to make the process more bearable. Dermatologist Candace Glenn M.D. of Mid Atlantic Dermatology & Plastic Surgery in Winter Park shared her best sun safety tips along with the latest and greatest kid-friendly formulas.

Know Your Sunblock Basics There are two main types of sunblock: physical and chemical. Physical (also known as mineral) sunscreens have zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide as their active ingredients and protect against both UVA and UVB rays. They create a physical barrier between the skin and the sun, so they protect immediately upon application. One major downside? Physical formulas are typically goopier and harder to rub in. On the other hand, chemical sunscreens (ones made with compounds like oxybenzone or avobenzone) tend to be lighter weight. They penetrate the skin and are designed to absorb the sun’s rays, like a sponge. Unlike physical sunscreens, you have to wait 20 to 30 minutes before you’re fully protected. Between the two, Dr. Glenn encourages parents to opt for a physical formulation because they’re superior in terms of long-lasting protection and mesh well with sensitive skin. “In general, you should look for all-mineral sunblocks that are SPF 30+ with at least 5% zinc oxide,” she says. “Keep in mind that SPF higher than 30 has very little increased efficacy and often just feels thicker and costs more. The ideal sunblocks are also free of fragrances, parabens, sulfates, dyes and formaldehyde.” Set an Example As you know, kids copy whatever you do, so make sure to put on sunblock too. “Act like you need their help to apply it,” says Dr. Glenn. “You can make it more fun by singing songs with them and creating cool names for sunscreen, like sun makeup or sun armor.” It’s also important to make it a habit and treat sunscreen application as a part of your going outside routine — so if you’re putting on

as a part of your going outside routine so if you’re putting on shoes, you’re putting on sunscreen too. As—a reminder, keep your goshoes, you’re putting onyou sunscreen too. Find Your Fave Formula “Always get the sunscreen that you will use — it doesn’t do any good sitting in your bag and not on skin,” says Dr. Glenn. That’s why it’s worth the trial and error of finding a formula that works for your family’s lifestyle. She cautions against aerosol formulas: They can be tricky to distribute evenly onto skin, and people often don’t apply enough for them to be fully effective. A good rule of thumb is that kids require about a dime-size amount on their face and a nickel-size amount for each of their extremities, their chest and back.

For All-Over: Babyganics SPF 50+ Sunscreen Stick $6.99, target.com

“I love this for young complexions. In addition to being 100% mineral, toxin- and fragrancefree, and organic, it has a natural seed oil blend in it. This creates a very smooth, gentle feel upon application. Additionally, the oil blend prevents it from drying out after opening like many other mineral sticks tend to do.”

Aveeno Positively Mineral Sensitive Skin Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50 $9.99, target.com “Beyond its mineral and broad-spectrum formulation, it is made with oat extract so is also nourishing for skin. Skin tends to become dry with repeated exposure to water, especially water containing chlorine, so this helps to combat that to keep skin protected and hydrated.”

How to Create a

Backyard Oasis Bring the resort lifestyle home by installing the pool of your dreams — and then throw an equally epic pool party! Words by Maddy Zollo Rusbosin

It’s the time of year to sit back and relax. While a tropical getaway or staycation is one way to make the most of summer break, you don’t have to leave your house to get the good times rolling. After all, it’s easier than you think to turn your backyard into your own personal paradise. This is especially true if you decide to install a pool that’s catered to your family’s wants and needs. PLAYGROUND talked with Joel Culp, chief marketing officer at Latham Pool, about everything you need to consider if you’re thinking about taking the plunge: FLOAT YOUR OPTIONS For the longest time, a concrete pool was the only option if you were looking for a backyard watering hole. Despite its durability, a concrete build tends to be quite expensive and require a lot of upkeep, which is why many people are now turning to fiberglass and vinyl liner alternatives. While both can be customizable to fit your yard, the main difference boils what they’re made out of. “Fiberglass are made of the strongest and most durable material and are available in 56 different timeless designs in 11 distinct bold colors that will enhance your everyday lifestyle and remain a constant source for relaxation and fun year after year,” explains Joel. “Vinyl liner pools are constructed using innovative, long-lasting materials with cutting-edge technology, which means less time cleaning your pool.”

JUMP CONFIDENTLY INTO AN INSTALLATION PLAN Another important decision is where to place your pool. “Identify if you’d want it in a spot with more sun exposure or more shade,” says Joel. “And when choosing your pool’s design, keep your home’s aesthetic and the surroundings of your yard in mind.” If you have trouble imagining it, Latham Pool has a pool visualizer app that lets you see a pool come to life in your own space. That way, you can play around with different shapes, sizes and patterns. Once you’re set on where it’ll go, a typical fiberglass or vinyl liner install takes one to two weeks, with some completed in just three to four days. DO A DEEP DIVE ON CUSTOMIZATION After the basics are ironed out, the fun really begins. From tanning ledges and spill-over saunas to LED lights and bubblers, there are so many ways to personalize your pool. If you have lots of little kids, consider a large shallow step for playtime. If you have teens or tweens, they may love a jacuzzi or ample deck space to hang out with friends. Another add-on to consider is a retractable pool cover. “They help keep debris out of the water, shield your pool in cold or inclement weather and reduce your heating costs,” explains Joel. “Safety covers also provide peace of mind, as they protect family members and pets from any accidents.” At the end of the day, Joel encourages taking a more relaxed approach to the process. “It should be fun,” says Joel. “This is an investment in your home and a way to spend more quality time with those you love.”

Fiberglass pools are manufactured off-site, so the shell is delivered to you in one piece, whereas the vinyl liner pool is built by digging a shape, installing components like steps and wall panels, and then dropping a vinyl liner on top — a technique that gives you more freedom to create a unique pool shape. According to Joel, your most cost-effective option is a fiberglass pool. Concrete requires resurfacing and acid washing, while vinyl pool liners need to be replaced eventually.

Moving Checklist FOR FAMILIES

Unpack your children’s big feelings with these practical tips and tricks. Words by Sarah Carroll According to the American Moving and Storage Association, an estimated 11% of the U.S. population moves each year, with 50% of those relocations occurring in the summer months. While moving your family to a new city is exciting, it can also be an overwhelming process. As adults, we can quickly rattle off the positive opportunities that can come from it, but it may not be as easy for kids to see the bigger picture. While I had a happy childhood, my memories are segmented into short periods because we moved often. Years later, when I relocated my own daughters, I noticed how differently they felt about our family’s upheaval. My 5-year-old was excited and motivated to jump into a new home and city, whereas my 7-year-old felt a loss of control having to say goodbye to her relationships, activities and everything familiar. From my own experience, both as a child and as a mother, and from others I’ve encountered working as a realtor, I’ve learned that children need different tools to cope with the changes. For that very reason, I’ve compiled lists of helpful strategies for anyone considering a move:

Plan Ahead

Involve the Kids

Kids thrive with stability and predictability, so map out as much as you can before moving day: Set aside a short time each day for kids to pack. This way, they’re not overwhelmed when the time comes.

Allow them to be a part of the preparation to the best of their ability. Here’s how to do it, depending on their age: If they’re in preschool, tell them in very simple terms what will happen.

Research your new community, schools, daycares, activities and more so you can give your children as many solid facts as possible. This prevents too many unknowns while allowing them to mentally prepare.

Explain that their favorite belongings will go with them — even the furniture — so it’ll still feel like home.

Ask questions like: Is the culture or language different in the new location? What do people in this new area value?

Talk about the fun things you can do when you’re settled.

Plan moving day for your child in an age-appropriate way. Find a sitter for your youngest children. For older kids, arrange for a long playdate at their best friend’s home so they can enjoy quality time with them before leaving. Color code your moving boxes. Let kids assign each room a different color, then have them differentiate boxes with tape or markers in that hue. Plan a time to see familiar faces after you’ve left. Whether you can swing returning to your old community for a visit or need to set up a Facetime or Zoom call, providing kids with an opportunity to see their friends again gives them something to look forward to and teaches them the importance of maintaining long-distance relationships.

Show them photos of their new house or room. Read to them using a picture book with cute characters who explain moving in positive terms, like Moving to the Neighborhood (Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood) by Alexandra Cassel. If they’re in elementary school, break down the steps of moving houses and welcome their active involvement in the process. Ask them to assist with basic packing (leave the more complicated packing for when they’re in bed or at school). Invite them to tour the new home and community inperson. If that’s not possible, use the internet to drum up excitement.

20 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2021

Find age-appropriate books or workbooks to help them process the changes like My Very Exciting, Sorta Scary, Big Move: A Workbook for Children Moving to a New Home by Lori Attanasio Woodring. Listen and discuss their concerns related to the changing nature of their world and friendships. Talk with them about how you’ll help them stay in touch with family and friends. If they’re in middle or high school, prepare them for the separation from old friends and take the time and energy to teach them strategies to meet new people. Have them pack their own belongings and help with other household items. Encourage them to organize a family yard sale. Imagine their motivation to participate if they can help run the event and make a little money from the proceeds. Discuss the timeline for everything, making sure to listen to their concerns. Support their solutions to challenges that the move and resettling pose for them. They’ll feel good having a little autonomy during a stressful time. Discuss and plan opportunities to demonstrate that their current friendships aren’t over; they’re changing. Additionally, present future opportunities for developing new friendships such as clubs, community activities, sports or online groups with local connections.

Picture It No matter how young or old your kiddos are, here’s how to introduce them to their new hood: Take them there! This will help them imagine themselves in their new life. If visiting in person beforehand is impossible, use Google Earth to virtually walk down your new street, watch a virtual showing of the new house, do a video tour with the principal of their new school or even try to schedule a Zoom session with a new coach.

Host a Good-Bye Party Throw a drop-in event at your home or community park. This is an easy way to see everyone because they come to you at the same time. Plus, it’s an upbeat way to have a little closure with friends, neighbors and colleagues. Designate a friend to take photos of you with your guests. Give your eager-to-help friend the task of handing out cards with your new contact info or digitally pass it along to your guests.

Embrace Being a Tourist The best part of a relocation is the period of time when you’ve moved in but haven’t settled into your permanent schedule. Take this opportunity to explore your new community and meet the neighbors. Embrace family time. After weeks of long, hectic days preparing for the move, use this opportunity to enjoy quality time with your kids. Explore! Check out the places and businesses that make the area unique. Make checking out new places a game. For example, when our family moved to Orlando, we made it a goal to try out local pizzerias. Once a week, we had a blind taste-test between slices — the place where the winning pie came from became our family’s official Friday night pizza place. Look for local resident discounts at amusement parks, museums and activities. Don’t overdo it. While it’s fun to explore, do re-establish family traditions or regular routines to provide a sense of comfort and predictability for your kids.

Follow the new school, local pizza place or another well-known community activity on social media. Find and subscribe to local family event blogs and websites so you and your older children can stay upto-date with upcoming events and see images of businesses and recent activity. Not only is it a great way to get acquainted with your new community, but it also might help you narrow down which schools, dance programs, scouting groups or sports leagues your kids will want to join.

Playground Magazine’s Guide to

Florida’s Best Family Resorts Pack your bags, hop in the car and get ready for a vacation to remember. Words By Chris Karel

Sandestin Beach

When it comes to kid-friendly hotels in Florida, it’s all about the water. Resorts around the Sunshine State are constantly adding features to already impressive poolscapes to supplement the standard array of “dry foot” amenities like game rooms and kids’ clubs. You can’t blame them: Competition is steep. Thanks to Florida’s beaches and its abundance of theme parks, residents are spoiled when it comes to family-centric destinations.

Since Googling kid-friendly resorts can lead you down an endless rabbit hole, PLAYGROUND narrowed down the top 10 options to make planning a little less overwhelming. From an onsite dolphin lagoon to an aquarium big enough to snorkel in, here are the best Florida resorts to bookmark for your next vacation...

Hawks Cay Resort Duck Key Hawks Cay is the only resort in the mainland U.S. with a dolphin facility on-site, and for an added fee, resort guests can swim with the dolphins and even experience what it’s like to be dolphin trainer for a day. Located halfway down the Overseas Highway in the Keys, Hawks Cay is situated around a man-made lagoon that’s perfect for introducing little ones to snorkeling or stand-up paddle boarding. There are also five swimming pools with different themes, including the Pirate Ship pool and adults-only Oasis Cay pool. Head to the on-site marina to feed tarpon, rent kayaks or catch snorkeling and fishing excursions. Additionally, the on-site Coral Cay Activities & Adventure Club offers activities for kids ages 4–12, a playground, putt-putt golf course and basketball and volleyball courts. hawkscay.com

Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort COCOA BEACH If you're heading to Cocoa Beach, you’re in luck! The Westgate Cocoa Beach Resort & Pier is the best kidfriendly resort on the Space Coast. Parents will love the large two-bedroom, two-bathroom suites, each of which includes a full kitchen, dining room and three large TVs. Not that the kids will be spending much time in front of those – they’ll be too busy checking out the heated lazy river and huge splash playground. You can pack light because the resort’s beachside concierge will hook you up with sunscreen, toys, beach chairs, umbrellas, bike rentals and more. Located within easy walking distance to Ron Jon Surf Shop, the resort also provides a free shuttle service to the Westgate Cocoa Beach Pier for food, drinks and shopping. Be sure to check the Cape Canaveral launch schedule before you plan your trip, as the resort’s private beach is the perfect place to watch a rocket launch. PLAY Tip: Book directly through the resort and receive a free boogie board in your room upon arrival. westgateresorts.com

Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa PALM COAST The Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa has something most other resorts in Florida do not: an indoor pool. While the watery fun ends at other resorts as soon as the weather turns cold or stormy, guests who stay here can just pick up their towels and relocate to a massive pool that looks like it was cut into the floor of a cathedral. With soaring exposed-wood ceilings held up by huge columns and surrounded with floor-to-ceiling windows, this may be the most inviting indoor pool you’ll ever see. Sitting on a quiet stretch of private beach halfway between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, Hammock Beach also features five outdoor pools, a corkscrew water slide, a lazy river and a swimming pool-sized hot tub. For budding young golfers, there are two courses on-property: one designed by Jack Nicklaus and the other by Tom Watson. Guests get free access to the driving range after 2 p.m. hammockbeach.com

Omni Amelia Island Resort FERNANDINA BEACH This 400-room resort sits on a private beach about 45 minutes north of Jacksonville. One of its claims to fame? It boasts the largest resort pool area in northern Florida, including a 10,000-square-foot family pool, two hot tubs and a splash area. The 1,350-acre property also offers its own nature center, Gamers lounge and arcade, a mini golf course and a first-class golf course. Kids ages 4–10 can participate in Camp Amelia, which offers interactive learning sessions that include swimming, nature tours, games and arts & crafts. Plus, the Amelia’s Wheels outpost offers Segway tours and bike and golf cart rentals for exploring the property. omnihotels.com/hotels/amelia-island

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne MIAMI The only luxury resort on the country’s southernmost barrier island, the Ritz-Carlton is a world apart from the sometimes-rowdy South Beach scene. The star of the show here is the beach — and it’s the only one in South Florida to have been included on renowned vacation expert Dr. Beach’s “America’s Best Beaches” list. There’s also an oceanfront, zero-entry family pool. The resort’s Ritz Kids program offers a unique curriculum of daily activities for kids ages 5–12. This program was put together in partnership with the Ocean Futures Society with a focus on environmental education. It’s a perfect place to let the kids learn about the history, flora and fauna of Key Biscayne while you brush up on the nuances of tequila at the resort’s daily complimentary tastings. ritzcarlton.com

TradeWinds Island Grand Resort and RumFish Beach Resort ST. PETERSBURG BEACH These St. Pete Beach resorts are both owned and operated by TradeWinds but are separated by “200 flip flops,” as their website touts. Whichever one you stay at, spending time at the other is a must. The Island Grand Resort features a nearly 16,000-square-foot floating water park moored just offshore in the Gulf. Guests also get free access to the on-site mini golf course and paddleboats for exploring the property’s waterways. The centerpiece of the RumFish Beach Resort is a collection of four aquariums, including a touch tank experience where you can hold starfish, sea urchins and other amazing aquatic creatures, and a 33,500-gallon aquarium where you can snorkel for an added fee. Together, the resorts span 31 acres, offering guests seven swimming pools and 14 restaurants, making it an ideal spot for those who always want to experience something new. tradewindsresort.com 26 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2021

Hyatt Coconut Point Resort & Spa BONITA SPRINGS The Hyatt Coconut Point Resort & Spa is home to the largest resort pool complex in Southwest Florida, with five water slides, four swimming pools and a lazy river. One of its more unique aspects is how you get to the beach. Unlike most of the resorts on this list, guests can’t just walk off the pool deck and onto a gorgeous, sugarysand beach; they have to be ferried there from the resort’s marina across Estero Bay. The 15-minute crossing provides ample opportunity to spot dolphins, bald eagles, pelicans and other wildlife. The ferry drops guests on an island that’s part of an ecological preserve, meaning that its beaches are both pristine and deserted — two things that can’t normally be said about beaches in Florida. hyatt.com

JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort MARCO ISLAND Just a couple of years removed from a $320 million face-lift, the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort looks like a brand-new complex. The renovation added a hotel tower, five new restaurants, and most importantly, an expanded pool deck. Nestled along 3 miles of sandy, shell-strewn beach, the resort now includes the Tiki Kids pool with a water slide and waterfall. The Tiki Tribe Discovery Day Camp teaches kids ages 5–12 about the ecosystem of the nearby Ten Thousand Islands, while sailing and shelling tours give guests a chance to spot American white pelicans, bald eagles, dolphins and manatees in the wild. There’s also a 90-minute guided wave runner tour through mangrove islands for older children and adults. On the quieter side, the resort offers a complimentary yoga program for kids ages 4 and up. marriott.com

Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort DESTIN More of a self-contained town than a resort, the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort comprises 30 separate neighborhoods, each with a different ambience, accommodation style (from hotel rooms to town homes) and price range. Strung along 7 miles of beachfront, it has a mind-blowing 19 pools as well as 20 restaurants and 50 shops. Did we mention the adventure park where kids can zipline and navigate an obstacle course? There’s also an arcade, laser maze and on-site mini golf course. As if that’s not enough to keep young ones busy, guests get free access to trams and bikes for exploring the resort’s 20 miles of paths and trails. sandestin.com

JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa AVENTURA If all the kid-friendly resorts had a water slide competition, the JW Marriott Miami Turnberry Resort & Spa would come out on top. The resort’s seven water slides, with names like Whizzard and Boomerango, form the centerpiece of a 5-acre water park that also includes a lazy river, a gigantic kids pool and a three-lane FlowRider surf simulation ride. If that’s not enough watery fun for you, a complimentary shuttle takes guests to the nearby beach. Florida’s 5 Most Unique Hotels: Looking for something a little different? Try booking a room at one of these vacation spots that are far from average.

1. Jules’ Undersea Lodge

KEY LARGO At the only underwater hotel in the U.S., guests ages 10 and up scuba dive down 21 feet to spend the night in this decommissioned undersea marine lab. Not scuba certified? The lodge offers “resort” certification on-site to allow guests with no prior scuba experience to dive down to the rooms. Once settled in your undersea home, which comes complete with two bedrooms, a full bathroom and a kitchen, guests with “open water” certification can head back out for a night dive to swim with bioluminescent creatures in the protected lagoon. Those who prefer to stay dry can watch the watery world go by through one of three large portholes. When it comes time to eat, order pizza, subs or even lobster for underwater delivery.

2. Holly Bluff Marina

DELAND If sleeping underwater doesn’t float your family’s boat, try floating in a houseboat! This marina on the St. John’s River in DeLand offers seven houseboats for rent that you can sail up and down the river or, for those unsure about piloting such a large craft, leave moored safely at the marina.

3. Club Med Sandpiper Bay PORT ST. LUCIE Located on the St. Lucie River, this is the only traditional all-inclusive family resort in Florida. However, what really sets it apart is its sports academies for intensive training in tennis, golf, soccer or beach volleyball with professional coaches. The room rates include all food and drink, kids’ club activities, sailboat, kayak and paddleboard rentals and – wait for it – trapeze lessons on the on-site flying trapeze. Additionally, if you love a family dance party, hit up the resort’s disco that’s open to all ages every night. 4. Legoland Hotel and Pirate Island Hotel

WINTER HAVEN These sister hotels sit side-by-side just "130 kid-steps” from the theme park’s entrance. The Pirate Island Hotel has – you guessed it – a pirate theme, while the original hotel features a mix of kingdom, adventure, pirate, LEGO Friends and LEGO Movie themes. Both hotels offer in-room scavenger/treasure hunts, interactive LEGO characters roaming the grounds and free Master Model Builder workshops. Adventurous adults can take a shot at completing the Minefield Challenge, which involves walking barefoot 30 feet across a hardwood floor strewn with LEGOs… in complete darkness. Just kidding! But seriously though, this resort is all about the LEGOs.

5. Westgate River Ranch Resort & Rodeo

RIVER RANCH

Welcome to the largest dude ranch east of the Mississippi River. Guests at the resort, located 90 minutes south of Orlando along the banks of the Kissimmee River, can take a shot at riding a mechanical bull, go on horse and pony rides and see a rodeo. More modern activities include airboat and swamp buggy rides, a zip line and even bungee jumping. The theme runs through the accommodations as well. In addition to traditional hotel rooms and suites, guests can stay in luxury Conestoga wagons, teepees or glamping tents.

Top 10 Orlando Resorts: 1. Universal’s Cabana Bay Beach Resort Hit up one of the hotel’s two huge pools, complete with water slides and a lazy river, or the 10-lane bowling alley.

2. Hard Rock Hotel at Universal Orlando Resort Book a night at this music-centric hub. You can even reserve the Future Rock Star suite, where your budding musician can perform under the lights, surrounded by real rock star memorabilia.

3. Reunion Resort & Golf Club A water slide, aquatic playground, lazy river and 10 different swimming pools add up to a ton of fun in this Kissimmee mainstay.

4. Wyndham Grand Orlando Resort Bonnet Creek Resort guests have access to five pools, two lazy rivers, two water slides, two kids splash areas, eight hot tubs and free mini-golf – all arranged around a picturesque 10-acre lake.

5. Four Seasons Resort Orlando Explorer Island is kid heaven with water slides, a lazy river, a splash zone and more. Other draws include the Kids for All Seasons club, a Disney character breakfast and magical makeovers at the spa, where your kids can transform into a princess or a knight.

6. JW Marriott Orlando Grande Lakes and The Ritz- Carlton Orlando Guests of these sister resorts get access to all the amenities on the 500-acre property, including guided kayak tours of Shingle Creek, the headwaters of the Florida Everglades.

7. Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate Beyond an enviable pool set-up and it's 9-hold par 3 kid-friendly golf course, the fact that it’s the only Orlando resort with its own wave pool makes it one-of-a-kind.

8. Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center The resort’s Cypress Springs water park has a drop slide, surf simulator, three-story water playground, racing slides and the new Crystal River Rapids, a not-so-lazy river.

9. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Where else can you stand on your hotel room balcony and watch giraffes, zebras and gazelles roaming the resort grounds below?

10. Disney’s Beach Club and Yacht Club Resorts These sister properties may be walking distance to Epcot, but you’ll be hard-pressed to pull the kids away from their shared pool: Stormalong Bay. We suggest bribing them with the Kitchen Sink ice cream sundae from the Beach Club’s soda shop.

Summer Adventure Central Florida is the epicenter of theme parks, beaches, natural springs and world-class family entertainment, and if you live here, you know there’s no shortage of things to do — no matter what kind of activities your family is into. As a resident, you also know that an enjoyable summer break means avoiding long lines and throngs of out-of-state visitors as much as possible. That’s why this isn’t a tourism pamphlet of what to do. Instead, buckle up and take a ride as we explore some of the lesserknown (or even forgotten!) local attractions and outdoor adventures. Words by Amanda Green

If you want a

beach adventure

Drive 1 hour east, and you’re facing the beautiful Atlantic. Drive 2 hours west, and you’re tiptoeing in the soft, white Gulf Coast sand. Whether your perfect beach day involves making big waves or a quiet splash, here are the best beaches within 3 hours of Central Florida: Canaveral National Seashore

Ponce Inlet & Cocoa Beach New Smyrna Beach While Cocoa Beach gets There’s a reason this choice is an overall crowd-pleaser: It’s typically less crowded than its more popular, neighboring tourist destinations to the north and south, and it really feels like a beach for the locals. If you head out early, you’ll likely see surfers riding the waves near the jetty. In the afternoon, the sand is packed with families building sandcastles and tossing footballs. Another can’t miss: Ponce Inlet is home to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. Try climbing the lighthouse for beautiful views of the surrounding area.

crowded during the summer, it’s still worth the drive. Why? Cocoa Beach is easily one of the most familyfriendly beaches in Central Florida. Beyond the iconic Ron Jon Surf Shop and Surf School, there are plenty of family-friendly dining options like Long Doggers or Coconuts on the Beach. Cocoa Beach offers easy access to restrooms, and a lifeguard stand is almost always within sight.

Indian Rocks Beach If the Atlantic Coast isn’t your thing (or if your kids are going through a phase where they’re afraid of waves), then load up the car and head down I-4 to Florida’s West Coast. While Clearwater Beach is soughtafter for its sugary white sand and crystal-clear water, go a little further south to Indian Rocks Beach. It has all the beauty of Clearwater without the crowds. Little tidal pools often form on the beach, giving the youngest kids a shallow place to splash.

34 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2021

Sebastian Inlet State Park You’ll see more sand dunes than condos at this beach just south of Melbourne. This is thanks to it being protected within the Florida Park Service, making it a wonderful choice for families looking to escape the hustle and bustle. Visitors can fish, swim, surf, picnic, birdwatch, snorkel and even camp. There’s also a spot called “the Cove,” where the water is so shallow and calm that even a toddler can play in it.

Canaveral National Seashore Experience another natural beach option just north of Cape Canaveral. With few tourists, it’s an ideal spot for a family picnic, followed by a long walk along the water. It’s important to note, however, that the surf can feel a bit heavy, and since there are no lifeguard towers, it may not be the best choice for novice swimmers.

If you want a

sporty adventure

Thrive on competition? Have kiddos that seem to never lose steam? From fastballs in the batting cages to laps around the go-kart track, the little athletes in your life will love these spots:

Sports Heaven

Get ready to hit a homer at this family sporting facility in Winter Springs. It has batting cages, field rentals and basketball court rentals. Spend the day practicing as a family or opt for professional instruction.

Congo River Golf

Fore-get about boredom and hone your putt-putt skills at this mini golf course themed like an African adventure. Everyone from the youngest siblings to mom and dad can have a good time trying to get a hole-in-one.

Andretti Indoor Karting and Games

Convince the kids it’s time to take their Mario Kart skills to a real racetrack. With options for kids as young as age 5, Andretti’s indoor facility also houses a ropes course, laser tag, bowling lanes and other arcade games.

Orlando Watersports Complex

Here’s your chance to ride the cables and learn to wakeboard. OWC offers activities for people who are at least 6 years old and 43 inches tall. There’s also an inflatable aquapark to run, bounce and slide on.

Disc Golf at Bill Frederick Park

Make a day of it at this family-friendly park at Turkey Lake. In addition to three different disc golf courses, kids can also get their energy out at two playgrounds, multiple nature trails, a children’s farm and a swimming pool.

If you want a

Orlando Watersports Complex

nature-filled adventure

Lather on the sunscreen, spray on the bug repellent and take a journey along these natural favorites that range from cold springs to shady trails:

Paddle Down Rock Springs Run Rent a canoe or kayak from King’s Landing near Wekiva Springs for a paddling excursion. The gorgeous crystal-clear waters will make you want to lean back and relax as you take in its natural beauty. Guided tours are also available.

Tube at Kelly Park Also located in Rock Springs Run, this naturally occurring lazy river is perfect for those who’d rather float than paddle. The cool 68-degree water is a reprieve from the blazing Florida heat. Plan to get there early because Kelly Park often reaches capacity.

Spring Hop at Ocala National Forest It’s easy to go from one picturesque location to the next since there are hundreds of springs, ponds and lakes within the forest. Some of the more popular swimming holes include Juniper Springs, Salt Springs, Silver Glen Springs and Alexander Springs.

35 PLAYGROUND Jun / Jul 2021

Hike Locally Download the Alltrails app to discover the best hikes in Central Florida and read reviews of different trails. A few tried-andtrue walks that are great year-round (and don’t get too swampy) include the Black Bear Wilderness Trailhead in Sanford, the Barr St. Trailhead in Little Big Econ National Forest and the Enchanted Forest Sanctuary in Titusville.

Spend a Day at Lake Louisa State Park This state park, located less than an hour from Orlando, is a nature lover’s retreat! Explore the park’s three main lakes, one of which includes a swimming beach (but beware of gators!), rent canoes, hike a shady nature trail and bring the family bicycles to ride on 7 miles of paved roads surrounded by nature.

If you want an

animal adventure If your child is a regular Dr. Dolittle, you’re in luck. Central Florida has excellent locations for viewing and interacting with animals:

The Zoo – We’re fortunate enough to have two conservation-minded zoos nearby. At the Brevard Zoo, feed the giraffes, paddle across Africa and take a stroll around the habitats to learn about the 900 animals in residence. If you’re looking for something closer to home, spend an afternoon with 100+ different species (the rhino encounter is a can’t miss!) at the Central Florida Zoo & Botanical Gardens in Sanford.

Audubon Center for Birds of Prey – Give a hoot about local birds by taking a stroll past bald eagles, hawks, owls and other airborne raptors to learn about their environments and hear how humans can help conserve the population. Many of the animals living there are rescues with interesting stories of survival, so don’t be shy to ask about your favorite feathered friends.

Wild Florida – This drive-through safari park became famous during

Wild Florida

2020’s social distancing period. Stay in your own car as you drive through the grasslands to spot zebras, giraffes, antelope, bison and potentially dozens of other species.

The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive – While there is never a guarantee in nature, odds are high that you’ll spot alligators, turtles and waterbirds along this 11-mile drive. There is even an audio tour you can download to learn about the area’s history and restoration efforts while you slowly meander along the water. Gatorland – There’s nothing more Florida than Gatorland, home to more than 2,000 American alligators. This unique theme park in South Orlando, which has been teaching visitors about alligators since 1949, hosts several educational shows, an off-road adventure ride and a thrilling zip line experience.

If you want a

farm adventure

Farm life is hard work…unless you’re just borrowing the lifestyle for a day. Right now, agrotourism is about as hot as the Florida summer. Here are five places to get a taste of the country:

Showcase of Citrus

Uncle Donald’s Farm

For a long time, Florida was synonymous with citrus. During your visit to this grove and farm in Clermont, learn all about the different varieties that grow in Florida, feed farm animals, play in a fun sand pit, take a monster truck tour and end the day on a sweet note with their famous orange creamsicle.

Stanley Pond Adventure Farm This family-owned farm calls itself “agri-tainment.” Race tricycles, cool off in the splash pad, play a little barnyard ball and fish until your heart is content on this 23-acre facility in Astatula.

Get a taste of classic barn life at this petting farm in Lady Lake, where you can learn to milk a goat, feed cows and touch a chicken.

Wildflower Farm’s Goat Yoga Social media is to thank for this unusual take on yoga. It may seem counterproductive to relax and practice breathing while baby goats climb on your back, but it’s one of the most fun (and cutest!) ways to exercise. You must be at least 8 years old to participate. Other activities for younger children include storybook time and family nights with opportunities to snuggle and feed baby goats.

If you want a more

relaxed adventure

Not every summer day has to be jam-packed. Don’t overlook the small activities that can turn a hot, boring afternoon into a memorable one:

Make a Splash at Oviedo Aquatic Center – This water destination has a huge splash zone with shallow water for toddlers and young kids. The facility also includes an Olympic-sized swimming pool, an activity pool, and an indoor gymnasium and rock wall.

Picnic at Mead Botanical Garden – Pack some sandwiches for an afternoon spent meandering through Mead Gardens in Winter Park. Lay out a blanket on a grassy area by Alice’s pond for a picnic, stop to see what’s blooming in the wildflower garden or play hide-and-seek in the trees. Relax at Boxi Park – This modern open-air park in Lake Nona has food and beverage stands made out of old shipping containers along with live music, a kids’ area, volleyball courts and a dog park. Find the Fairies at Leu Gardens – Nothing beats a quiet morning stroll through the grounds of Leu Gardens. Children can have fun this summer locating the 20 whimsical fairy doors hidden throughout the gardens. Help your kids use their imagination by coming up with stories of secret gardens and magic.

Make a Playground Passport – Draw up local playground and splash pad “passport” so kids can track where they’ve gone with stickers. It’s an easy way to burn off energy while discovering new places to play.

Pedaling for a Purpose

Words by Amy Nielsen | Photos by Jessica Friend

Learning to ride a bike is a leisure activity most people pick up relatively easily as young children. But when you think about the complexities of biking, it’s a pretty fascinating phenomenon. Besides strength and balance, it also requires a combination of gross motor skills, visual motor skills and sensory motor skills. Also, to bicycle safely, the rider must remember multiple road rules and be continuously aware of their surroundings. Children with exceptional needs, such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder or other related challenges, may have developmental roadblocks when it comes to mastering the skills required. This makes it more difficult for them to learn to ride a bike independently or with a caregiver. Plus, there are plenty of adults who have never learned to ride, whether it was due to not having access to a bicycle growing up or an unpleasant experience or trauma associated with biking. The good news: It is never too late to learn to ride a bike. This sentiment is what fuels Tammy Bishop’s passion for bringing bike riding to everyone. Tammy, a licensed occupational therapist, has been in the field since 1999. Tammy is a firm believer in the importance of physical activities such as biking. Not only does she like the fitness benefits associated with biking, but she also loves the bonding experience biking creates among friends and family. Tammy recognized that biking activities for exceptional needs children are often limited, so she began offering bike riding lessons for these specific clients. After much success, she opened her practice to offer bike riding lessons to all children and adults. As an occupational therapist, Tammy has background knowledge that provides her with a unique perspective as a bicycling instructor. She understands how to break a large task into smaller steps, and she pays attention to her clients’ sensory needs and stamina to tailor her lessons accordingly. Most importantly, she works to help her clients overcome their hesitations about biking.

“First, I acknowledge their fear and then work to build their trust in their own body to keep them safe,” she explains. “I also show them the list of the steps we will take together to get them from the first step of sitting on the bike’s seat to the end goal of independently pedaling. Having them visualize this series of events helps decrease their anxiety.” Families of children with exceptional needs who receive the Gardiner Scholarship (a scholarship for kids in the state of Florida with a disability) can submit Tammy’s bike riding lesson fees for reimbursement, making bicycling more accessible than ever. In addition to her in-person lessons, Tammy also offers free phone consultations that range from helping families select the right bicycles to giving them tips and tricks to teach their kids (or themselves) how to ride a bike. Sometimes a short phone call is all it takes for Tammy to get someone riding a bike on their own. Tammy is located in Central Florida, but she’s happy to speak with families in any location. While a family bike outing may seem like no big deal to some people, it can be so special to those who thought it was out of reach. “I recently received a photo from a mom of her son riding on a bike alongside his dad,” says Tammy. “When I first started working with her son, the mom wasn’t confident he would be able to learn. To help this family accomplish a dream they had — one that they thought would never happen — brings me joy.”
