Gender Politics in Korean Sport Story by Nathan Ouriach

B

ack in November, the South Korean Women’s Soccer League fell in to disrepute over the case of Park Eun-Seon. Park Eun-Seon had completed the season with 19 goals in 22 matches and a second place finish for the Seoul City Hall Amazones. However, she entered the news not for her proclivity to hit the ball into the back of the net but because she, according to some people, is actually a he. As a result, the Head coaches from six other teams in the WK-League have questioned Park’s gender and threatened to boycott the league if the 27 year old continues to play.

Unfortunately for Park Eun-Seon this is not the first time her gender has been a source of conjecture in South Korea. At 180cm tall and weighing 74kg Park Eun-Seon has had a history of allegations that reach back to 2004. Ten years ago, it was competing nations as opposed to domestic coaches who forced her to take a gender test to compete in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Stretching back even before 2004, The Korea Football Association claim that Park also took a gender test when she was 15 years old.

The subject of gender has followed Park EunSeon all of her career and has negatively affected her life on the pitch, such as back in 2010 when she withdrew from a South Asian tournament to circumvent any more controversy. Nevertheless, this time she is not intending to give in and neither are a number of people around her.

Head coach of the women’s national team, Yoon Deok-Yeo, has decided to include Park in his provisional roster of 50 for the upcoming AFC Women’s Asian Cup in May. The Asian cup holds a specific significance this time round as it provides a route towards the 2015 Women's World Cup in Canada for the top five teams. At present, if both Yoon Deok-Yeo and the sports council

of Korea have their way Park Eun-Seon will be able to translate her domestic form to international level. Korea’s sport’s council issued their own statement to CNN where they asserted that the whole confusion “…is betraying the fundamental human rights of a player which should be protected at all means."

The entire affair is redolent of the South African runner Caster Semenya. After winning the 800 meter gold medal at the 2009 World Championships with a time of 1:55.45 in the final, questions began to arise regarding her gender. Since this event, the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations) has been heavily criticized for both the way they handled the case as well as how they handled Semenya’s own human rights and privacy. The gender politics surrounding Semenya led to an athletic exile for the runner who, due to the unrealized results of her tests by IAAF, could not compete in many tournaments during the subsequent years.

The issue of gender in sports is not as clearcut as many people may believe. For both Park Eun-Seon and Caster Semenya, the emotional exhaustion of dealing with these accusations can be hugely detrimental to their careers. Park used social media to address her emotional state, conceding that: "My heart aches and it is humiliating… in the past, I would have thrown my hands up and left, but I've worked so hard to get to this point, and I will not give up so easily."

Hopefully the Korean sports federation, in addition to the country as a whole, can treat the case of Park Eun-Seon with patience and inference. Park Won-soon, the mayor of Seoul, set a standard for the rest of the country to follow when he tweeted: "As the father of a daughter, I will do my best to protect Park Eun-Seon’s human rights."

What is the Miss Gyeongbuk competition?

Sponsored by the newspaper Hankook Ilbo, the competition is open to any woman between the age of 19 and 25 years old living in the Gyeongbuk area. The purpose of the competition is to find a local representative for this area based on talent, intellect, personality, and beauty. The 2014 Miss Gyeongbuk competition will take place in Andong on June 7th. The competition is an enjoyable experience not only for the participants, but also for the local residents in Gyeongbuk.

Was it your childhood dream to enter a competition of this kind?

I didn’t know a lot about these competitions while I was growing up; I just thought that they were about hearing how pretty you looked and not much else. During my voluntary service I began to think about them more, but the real push was talking to someone involved. After graduating university and while researching jobs, I took a speech class and the instructor turned out to be a teacher for the competition participants.

She suggested that I enter and I realized that as I was 25 this could be my only chance to do so.

I thought about it in depth and decided to take part.

You mentioned taking on some voluntary service. What was this like and how did it influence your decision?

My first volunteering experience was as a Japanese translator during the National Wheelchair Tennis Championships held in Daegu.

Through this experience I was able to face my

prejudices and misconceptions towards people with disabilities. It encouraged me to commit myself further and after that I volunteered at the Pyeongchang Special Olympics, also as a translator. It was here that I met the 2007 Miss World competition winner. As a Special Olympics honorary ambassador it was great to see her representing her country and promoting the games and those taking part. I realized that the participants of competitions like Miss Gyeongbuk are not just pretty girls or entertainers; they are able to become role models and inspirations for those who they meet.

How did you prepare for the Miss Gyeongbuk competition?

I prepared extremely hard for the competition.

I had to exercise vigorously and also research current events and topical information to talk about. I didn’t have much time to prepare myself as I entered late, so I had a hectic schedule during the days leading up to the competition. I also had to prepare for a talent show, so I chose a sword dance but I’m quite clumsy so it probably didn’t look so good to the audience!

You’ve had great results not only with Miss Gyeongbuk, but also other competitions.

How do you feel about that?

I was lucky enough to be given the title of Queen at the Tourism Korea competition. This was to elect a representative for Korea to go on and compete in the Tourism International Competition in China. Around 100 countries took part and I was awarded fourth place. More importantly, I was able to meet many different people

from all over the world, so I brought back a lot of contacts and great memories from the experience.

What do you want to take away from the competition? Do you have any goals for the future?

As I mentioned previously, I am very passionate about voluntary work. I want to use my title for a good purpose and inspire people to do the same. I would love to hold an athletic festival for people from all walks of life; it’s really important to me to make people feel comfortable in themselves and encourage them to meet others without prejudice or closed minds. As for myself, I don’t want to be held down by just one thing but I’m looking into becoming an image consultant. It is something very new and challenging for me as it requires a lot of knowledge from various fields, but I’m working hard so I hope I will be successful!

미스 경북 대회는 어떤 대회인가요? 한국일보가 주최를 하고 경북 지역의 만 19세~ 만 25세까지 여성이면 누구나 참가할 수 있어요. 외 모뿐 아니라 성격, 지성 등 내적인 미까지 겸비한 지 역 최고의 미인을 뽑는 거죠. 2014년 미스 경북 대 회는 안동에서 6월쯤 진행될 예정이에요. 현장에서 누가 최고의 미인이 될지 지켜보는 것도 재미있는 추억이 될 것 같아요. 대구에 있는 많은 외국인들이 올해는 안동의 한국 전통도 즐기면서 경북의 최고 의 미인이 나오는 현장에 와서 축제를 즐긴다면 정 말 잊지 못할 추억이 될 것이라고 생각해요. 예전에 비해서 미스코리아 대회에 대한 관심이 많이 사라진 것 같아서 좀 속상해요. 지역 미인대회의 취지가 지

역 대표로 수려한 외모와 지적인 미까지 겸비한 여 성을 뽑는 것 만 있는 것이 아니거든요. 지역의 주민 들과 함께 즐거운 축제의 장을 만들어서 협력의 장 을 만들고자 하는 취지가 있다는 것을 잊지 않고 즐 겨주셨으면 좋겠어요. 어릴 적부터 미스코리아에 참가하는 것이 꿈이었나 요? 여자라면 예쁘다는 말을 들으면 좋아하잖아요? 그 정도였어요. 하하. 딱 미인 대회에 참가할거라 는 꿈을 가지고 있었던 것은 아니에요. 2013년 2 월에 졸업을 하고 취업 준비를 하면서 참가할 계기 가 생겼어요. 학교에서 3월에 스피치 강의를 들었는 데 강의를 해주시던 강사 분이 미스코리아 대회에 서 참가자들의 스피치를 가르치시는 분이셨던 거예 요. 그 분께서 참가해보지 않겠냐고 제의를 하셨어 요. 처음엔 ‘사기꾼 아니야?’라고 의심도 했었어요. 하하 제 나이가 작년에 만 25세였으니까 마지막 출 전권이 있는 나이였거든요. 그래서 그 전에 봉사활 동을 하면서 생각했던 것이 있던 참에 선생님께서 권유를 하시니까 고민이 많이 됐지만 참가해 봐야 겠다고 생각했죠. 봉사활동 하면서 생각했던 것이 뭔가요?

2012년에 일본어 통역 봉사를 시작했어요. 처 음에 했던 봉사는 대구에서 열렸던 국제 휠체어 테 니스 대회였어요. 이 대회를 통해 장애인에 대한 선 입견도 많이 사라지고 단순히 내가 도와야 될 사람 이 아닌 친구라고 느끼게 됐어요. 그 후에 2013년 1월에 평창에서 열렸던 평창 스페셜 올림픽에도 통 역 봉사를 갔었어요. VIP를 모시는 일을 했는데 VIP 로 2007년 세계 유니버셜 미인대회에서 1등을 했 던 분이 스페셜 올림픽 홍보대사로 오셨어요. 일본 분이셨는데 한 나라의 대표로 사회적 약자인 장애우 의 대회를 세계에 홍보하고 경기를 지켜보며 응원도 하는 모습이 너무 보기 좋았어요. 단순히 미인대회 에서 뽑히면 연예인을 하거나 외적인 미모만 뛰어나

다고 생각했었는데 그 분을 보고는 정말 멋있는 일 이라는 생각을 하게 됐어요. 하지만 ‘내가 어떻게 하 겠어.’라는 생각만 하고 있었는데 3월에 스피치 선 생님께서 제의를 하시니 정말 신기했어요. 그래서 용기를 냈어요. 미스경북 대회 준비 과정은 어땠나요? 정말 열심히 준비 했던 것 같아요. 수영복 심사가 있어요. 그래서 몸매를 만들려고 얼마나 운동을 열 심히 했는지 몰라요. 뉴스도 준비 당시에 제일 많이 집중해서 봤던 것 같네요. 하하 짧은 기간에 준비를 해야 해서 정신 없이 준비 했던 것 같아요. 지역 대 회 전 날 전야제도 열리는데 전야제에선 개별 장기 자랑도 있어요. 저는 여럿이 검무를 했는데 다행이 몸치인 것을 감출 수 있었어요. 하하 미스경북 대회뿐만 아니라 투어리즘 코리아대회와 투어리즘 인터내셔널대회에서도 좋은 성적을 받으 셨던데 기분이 어떠셨어요? 투어리즘 코리아 대회에서는 퀸을 했어요. 그 대 회가 투어리즘 인터내셔널대회에 참가할 한국 대표 를 뽑는 대회에요. 그래서 퀸이 된 후에 얼마 지나 지 않아서 중국에서 열리는 투어리즘 인터내셔널대 회에 참가했어요. 거기서는 3등을 했는데 퀸이 있고 1등, 2등, 3등을 뽑기 때문에 3등을 했지만 실질적 으로는 4등이에요. 그 대회는 100개국에서 참가를 해요. 관광지 개발을 위한 미인대회인데 정말 많은 국가에서 참가해서 다양한 친구들을 사귈 수 있었어 요. 영어는 좀 부족하지만, 하하 그래도 정말 재미있 고 좋은 추억이 됐어요. 미스경북으로서 가장 하고 싶은 일은 뭐에요? 미스 경북 진으로서가 아닌 자신만의 꿈이 있다면? 제가 봉사에 관심이 많아요. 앞서 말했던 경험들 이 많은 영향을 준 것 같아요. 평창 스페셜 올림픽에 서 봤던 일본인 홍보대사처럼 미스경북 진이라는 타 이틀을 좋게 이용해서 저는 사회적 약자들과 자연스

럽게 즐길 수 있는 장을 만들고 싶어요. 봉사 활동을 하면서 다양한 나라의 장애인을 만나봤는데 정말 다 들 얼굴이 밝았어요. 장애를 가지고 있는지도 모를 만큼 밝고 사람들과 자연스럽게 어울리고. 일반인들 도 전혀 거리낌 없이 장난치고 놀더라고요. 우리나 라도 빨리 그런 문화가 더 정착 됐으면 좋겠어요. 또 장애인 뿐 만 아니라 다문화 가정, 외국인 노동자 등 상대적으로 사회에서 소외 받고 있는 모두가 웃으면 서 뛰어 놀 수 있는 체육 대회도 꼭 만들고 싶어요. 하나의 직업에 묶여 살고 싶지는 않다는 생각을 해요. 다양한 경험을 하면서 살고 싶어요. 지금은 ‘ 이미지 컨설턴트’가 되고 싶어요. 준비를 열심히 하 고 있는데 쉽지가 않네요. 하하 다양한 분야의 기 본 지식이 다 필요하더라고요. 그래도 열심히 능력 을 키워서 최종적으로는 앞서 말한 일을 하는 것이 꿈이에요.

Although I’d known about Tengger - formerly known as (((10))) - for a short while, I had never managed to check out their music or even make it down to show. For whatever reason, Tengger were just one of those things that you heard a lot about, but never remembered to investigate by yourself, even when all accounts are positive. That all changed last year with the change in name and the release of a phenomenal minialbum titled Electric Earth Creation. The opening track “Flower Garden” is a joyously upbeat 8 minute slice of EDM that is about as close to Korean house music as one can get. If you like any sort of EDM at all then I strongly encourage you to give them a listen.

Comprised of married Korean/Japanese couple Itta and Marqido, Tengger were recently joined by their first child Raai – I mention this only as the last time I saw Tengger live Itta was still heavily pregnant, not that this stopped her dancing about on stage, and now Raai is joining them on tour. Ahead of Tengger’s next visit to Daegu at Club Urban on May 8th, we had a chat with Itta to see what makes their music tick.

Are you excited to be coming back to Daegu again? Do you have a favourite experience in this city?

We are really excited to be coming back to Daegu! The city is a special place to us. We love coming back here not only for the fans that come to see us play, but also to see our friends like Matthew from Dogstar, or Adam a show promoter.

They never fail to help us out and it means a lot to us.

Has living in Jeju influenced your music in anyway?

Jeju is a special environment. We live, feel, and see the ocean every day. Its natural environment is very similar to Marqido’s hometown, so we feel very comfortable and peaceful there.

Is it difficult touring South Korea with a young child? What challenges have you faced?

Actually, our music is influenced by our baby 'Raai' more than anything else. During our last tour in October Raai was too young, so he always wanted to be with me. Twice, during that last tour, Marqido had to play alone because of this but our audiences were always very understanding about the situation. Now that he is older, Raai sometimes comes on to the stage with me, while at other times he’s enjoying the other band’s music and dancing along to the music.

To be honest, the hardest thing about touring with a young child is all the luggage!

Your music seems to have a very visual quality; I am interested to know if there are any artists or directors that influence your music?

I don’t think so. As I mentioned previously, the environment is a big influence to us. Maybe we have a bit of hippy style about us but we are always very conscious about our surroundings and how they can affect us. We focus on things coming into sight and expressing them. In that sense, we are interested in the artists and musicians who are not living in larger cities. We are interested in musicians who are outside of the mainstream culture that is always around us.

지난 공연에 이어, 다시 공연을 위해 대구로 돌아 오 시게 되었는데, 지금 심정은 어떤가요? 신나시나요? 대구에서 가장 기억에 남는 경험이 있다면, 어떤 경 험이 있을까요? 대구에서 도그스타의 Matthew, 항상 저희 공연 을 도와주는 Adam 같은 마음이 따뜻한 친구들을 다 시 만날 수 있다는 게 너무 기쁩니다. 그리고 오프 닝 공연을 해주시는 밴드들의 열기, 공연 때마다 만 날 수 있는 관객들의 반응들 덕분에 대구는 저희에 게 특별합니다. 제주도에서의 삶이 당신의 음악에 영향을 주었나요? 제주도는 특별한 환경입니다. 우리는 매일 바다 에서 살 앗고, 그 바다를 느끼고, 바다를 보 앗습니 다. 그곳의 자연 환경은 Marquido의 고향 자연환경 매우 흡사해서, 우리는 그곳에서 매우 편안하고 평 화로움을 느깼습니다. 당신의 어린 아이와 함께 한국을 돌아 다니는 것이 힘들지는 않나요? 혹시 어려운 점이 있다면, 어떤 것 들이 있을까요? 사실, 저희 음악의 변화는 제주라는 환경보다 '라 아이' 라는 아이가 태어나게 된 것이 더 큰 영향이라

2012년 10의 마지막 투어 때는 부산 공연 때 두 번 이나 무대에서 내려가 아이에게 모유를 주고는 다시 돌아가야 했던 경험이 있고, 요즘은 다른 밴드의 공 연은 춤추고 박수 치며 즐기던 아이가 무대 위의 엄 마로부터 스스로가 격리되었다고 느낀 나머지, 무대 위로 올라와서 안아달라고 울 때가 있습니다. 한국 에서는 공연할 때 아이를 돌봐주고, 함께 놀아주려 는 누군가가 있을 때가 많아서 덜 힘들지만, 가장 어 려운 점은 아이에게 필요한 짐과 공연 장비를 실은 짐의 비율이 반반이 되었다는 것이에요. 긴 노마드 음악가 생활을 통해서 스스로들의 짐은(악기를 포 함해서) 꼭 필요한 것만을 선택하고, 될 수 있는 대 로 줄이는 데 성공했지만, 아직은 아이를 위한 물건 들을 최소한으로 줄이더라도 어느 정도의 부피가 필 요하기 때문에 쉽지 않습니다. 저희가 로디를 쓸 수

MUSIC & ARTS 있는 형편의 음악을 하는 사람들도 아니고, 경제적 인 면이나 환경을 생각해서 자동차를 소유하는 것을 거부하고 있기 때문에 더 쉽지 않습니다. 당신의 음악은 굉장히 시각적인 요소(visual quality)가 많은 것처럼 보이는데요, 혹시 당신의 음악 에 영향을 준 예술가나 감독이 있는지 궁금 합니다.

TENGGER의 음악에 있어서, 어떤 구체적인 예술 가나 책, 영화 보다 더 큰 영향을 주는 것은 자연 환 경입니다. 저희는 바다 근처에 살고 있습니다. 제주 집에서 는 느린 걸음으로 걸어서 3~4분, 이카타 집에서는 걸어서 1분 안에 바다와 마주할 수 있습니다. 바다 를 보지 않고서도 바다를 느끼면서 생활하는 환경 이죠. 그리고 도시가 아닌 시골에 살고 있기 때문에 자연에 그대로 노출되어 오랜 기간을 보내다 보니, 긴장감이 모호해지고, 발걸음이 더욱 느려졌습니다. 아이가 태어나고서도 예전보다 비교적 좁은 반경 안 에서, 매일 노마드로서의 삶을 계속하며 사람들보다 주변 환경의 요소들을 세세하게 만나고 있지요. 마 음 안의 자신들을 보고 있자면, 60년대의 히피, 즉, 카운터컬쳐 (counter-culture: 사회의 지배적인 문 화에 반하는 정신적인 문화)의 습성을 지니고 있다 고 생각합니다. 극단적인 예를 들자면, 서울에서 아메리칸 락을

철저히 모방하고 있는 밴드들은 환경을 무시하고 있 다는 생각이 들기도 하는 것이지요. 보고있는 방향 이 잘못된 것 같다는 생각에 반감을 가지는 분이 계 셔도 어쩔 수 없지요. 아무튼 저희는 저희 스스로의 시야에 들어오는 것들을 인정하고 그것을 바로 표현 하는 데 중점을 두고 있습니다. 그런 의미에서 대도시에 콩나물 시루처럼 사람들 이 모여있는 것보다 활동의 중심이 되는 곳이 개성 적인, 쉽게 말하자면 지방의 뮤지션 혹은 아티스트 가 늘어나는 것에도 관심이 있습니다. 대구도 광역 시이기는 하지만 한국의 실정을 보자면 서울 이외의 곳은 시골 취급 당하고 있다는 사실에 비추어, 비록, 저희가 일개 인디밴드에 불과하지만 대구에서 새롭 게 만나게 되는 뮤지션들에게도 관심이 간다는 사실 을 감히 말씀 드리고 싶습니다.

Old School

The Good, The Bad, The Weird Story by Matthew Caracciolo

T

he Good, The Bad, The Weird is an oddly appropriate title given its subject’s strengths, shortcomings, and outright strangeness. Loosely based off the Sergio Leone spaghetti western classic The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, Weird is a high octane adventure set in Japanese-occupied Manchuria, a more than fitting backdrop for director Kim JeeWoon’s “kimchi western.”

The film takes off with a rousing train robbery that thrusts several undeveloped or even un-introduced characters at once into a hectic shoot‘em-up over a treasure map. It doesn’t take long, however, for the film to slow down a step and let you figure out which character is the good (actor Jung Woo-Sung’s Do-won), which is the bad (Lee Byung-Hun’s Chang Yi), and which is the weird (Song Kang-Ho’s Yoon Tae-Goo). The bounty hunter, gangster, and thief respectively must occasionally work together to find a lost treasure somewhere in the Manchurian desert.

Hot on their tails are rival gang groups and the Japanese army, who see the treasure as critical to securing their hold in the territory.

It’s been a minute since I’ve seen The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, but the basic plot points and character quirks have stuck with me. Song Kang-Ho’s Tae-Goo is a hapless, yet talented survivalist, and taps into Eli Wallach’s corre-

sponding character in Ugly for a bizarre, but entertaining performance. Similarly, Jung WooSung gives a fine Clint Eastwood interpretation: terse with words, quick with his pistol, and ready for the unexpected.

Where the film veers from Leone’s vision is in its modernity and its pace. Chang Yi’s K-pop hair is perhaps the most anachronistic ‘do’ I’ve seen in a film. The plentiful action scenes are creative (some might say implausible) and stocked with sight gags and a healthy dollop of slapstick. In fact, one could easily mistake all this for a Jerry Bruckheimer production, but with a mariachi/ modern soundtrack rather than Hans Zimmer’s bombastic orchestral cues. The quicker pace is where this modern interpretation loses ground to the original; the narrative is often scant and intensity is swapped for excitement and loudness, disappointingly so in the iconic three way standoff scene. Still, there are more than enough laughs and thrills here to warrant a viewing.

Recommended for: Fans of action movies and/ or westerns - especially Sergio Leone’s original.

oungdo Velvet Company, the world’s number one velvet exporter, has an open gallery conveniently located in Daegu. The gallery is called Youngdo-Daum, and has free entrance and guides available to take you around, should you want them. Most people think that velvet fabric is used only to make clothes or furniture, but at the gallery we discovered that velvet can also be used to make handbags, shoes, and umbrellas. It can even be used in photo printing!

The gallery has 4 floors filled to the brim with antique works of art, clothes, furniture and more, all in velvet. It’s a great place to have a wander if you have some time free, or if you have a particular interest in velvet use and manufacturing.

is the opportunity to try on some traditional Hanbok. At Youngdo-Daum they have special velvet Hanbok for winter and summer, and you are able to try them for free, though if you would like to have a commemorative photo printed on velvet, there is an extra charge. It’s a great souvenir to have of your visit to the gallery! You can also take photos in Hanbok on a famous drama set, so for all those K-drama lovers out there, this may be the perfect afternoon out for you!

The gallery also boasts a small café on the first floor, with a luxurious atmosphere surrounded by the velvet creations. With affordable and tasty food and drinks on offer, this is the perfect way to end your visit to Youngdo-Daum Velvet Gallery.

계 벨벳 수출 1위 기업 영도벨벳이 오픈한 벨벳 갤러리가 대구 시내에 있다. '영도다 움' 이란 갤러리인데, 무료입장에 친절하 게 설명을 해주는 안내원도 있고, 일반적으로 벨벳 으로는 옷이나 이불만 만든다고 생각과는 달리 가 방, 신발, 우산 심지어 사진까지도 벨벳에 프린트할 수 있었다. 지하1층에서부터 지상3층까지 모두 벨 벳으로 만든 고풍스러운 작품과 옷, 가구들로 가득 채워져 있었다. 갤러리 감상도 좋지만 외국인 친구 들에게 특히 추천해주고 싶은 건 기념촬영이다. 여 름용과 겨울용 벨벳 한복이 있는데 무료로 입어보고 드라마에 나왔던 세트장에서 사진도 찍을 수 있었 다. 그리고 비용이 좀 들지만, 벨벳에 사진을 프린트 할 수 있었는데 그것도 좋은 기념품으로 될 것 같았 다. 한국에 왔다면 한번쯤 전통의상인 한복을 입어 볼 필요가 있는데 이왕이면 고급소재의 벨벳한복을 입고 드라마 세트장에서 사진도 찍어보고 추억을 만 드는 게 좋을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 구경을 마친 후 1층에 마련된 작은 카페에서 저렴한 가격으로 고 급스러운 분위기에서 차를 즐길 수 있도록 되어 있 어 더더욱 의미 있는 시간을 보낼 수 있었다.

ocated near to Apsan, Real Kitchen The Hong’s best feature is its décor and view.

The first floor has an interior that is typical of many restaurants, but as you take the narrow stairs leading to the second floor the unique style of this restaurant comes to life. Antique sculptures and cabinets decorate the room and there are many interesting adornments, such as a vintage style billiards table, that catch the eye. These decorations, along with the modern floor to ceiling glass windows, create an interesting dynamic to be enjoyed while dining at Real Kitchen The Hong.

I visited with a friend during lunch time and as the restaurant was not too busy at this time there was just one waiter and one brunch menu to choose from. While waiting for the food, I noticed that the chef was taking the onions and mushrooms, which I’d previously thought were just used to add to the rustic décor, from around the restaurant. The brunch menu consisted of hash browns, eggs, bacon, sausage, and mixed

vegetables. We were also served bread, jam, and cheese, along with an Americano. I took a look at the dinner menu and saw that there are many more dishes to choose from if you were to visit at this time, including BBQ plates and fish and chips.

Apsan is renowned for its great restaurants and coffee shops; however people often overlook this area, instead opting for the convenience of downtown. Real Kitchen The Hong combines a restaurant, bar, and coffee shop all in one place but possibly the best feature of this restaurant is the view from the top floor. The view is so stunning that it’s not uncommon for evening tables on the top floor to be reserved up to three days in advance. Here, you can see across the whole city and watch as the world goes by whilst enjoying delicious food and drinks with friends.

산에 위치한 “리얼키친더홍” 의 최고 자랑 은 내부 인테리어와 이곳의 전망이다. 이곳 의 1층은 일반 레스토랑과 별 차이가 없지 만 좁은 계단을 통해 2층으로 올라가면 아주 독특 한 인테리어를 볼 수 있다. 앤틱 조각상과 가구들이 장식되어 있고 빈티지 스타일의 당구대, 테이블 등 이 특히 눈길을 끈다. 이러한 앤틱 스타일은 모던한 느낌의 바닥과 유리창와 더불어 생동감을 자아내기 도 한다. 점심에 가서 그런지 직원도 한 명뿐이어서 한 가 지 브런치 메뉴만 제공되었다. 음식을 기다리는 동 안 셰프가 인테리어의 일부분이라고 생각했던 자루 에서 양파와 버섯을 꺼내는 것이 특색 있었다. 브 런치 메뉴에는 해쉬브라운, 달걀, 베이컨, 소시지, 그리고 각종 야채가 포함되었고 빵과 더불어 잼, 치 즈, 아메리카노도 함께 제공되었다. 저녁 메뉴에는 바비큐 플레이트나 피시앤칩스 같은 다양한 메뉴들 이 있다고 한다 앞산 지역은 멋진 레스토랑과 카페로 유명 하지만 교통의 용이함 때문에 시내로 향하는 경우가 많다. 하지만 ”리얼키친더홍”은 레스토랑, 바, 그리고 카페 의 특성을 모두 가지고 있는 장점과 함께 무엇보다 추천하고 싶은 전망이 있다. 그 덕분에 야경이 잘 보 이는 좌석은 최소3일 전에 예약이 필요하다고 한다. 이곳에선 친구와 함께 대구 전체를 내려다 보며 맛 있는 음식과 술 한잔을 즐길 수 있다. 더워지는 요즘 “리얼키친더홍”에서 멋진 밤을 시 도해보는 것은 어떨지요?

t’s common to see coffee shops and cafés everywhere you turn in Korea. However, most of these are chain stores providing the same coffee or drinks you can find everywhere else. If you are tired of having regular coffee in one of these chains then 설빙 (Seol Bing), a dessert café serving distinctly Korean food, is waiting for you! 설빙 has a range of patbingsu (팥빙수), a Korean dessert of red bean paste and ice shavings, which are perfect for cooling off once Daegu’s unbearably hot summer begins. Unlike other patbingsu you may have tried, these are uniquely shaped like snowflakes and the ice is cut very thinly, so that it softly melts in your mouth. Alongside the ice and some milk, powdered rice cake with a soybean flavor is added. The ingredients of this dessert may be quite simple but they provide a sweet and cool taste – the perfect mixture

for a summer treat.

If you are not familiar with red bean or Korean rice cakes, or simply don’t like them, 설빙 has other flavors, such as strawberry and yogurt, to entice you. All of the ingredients used at the café are organic and sourced locally, so not only are you getting a delicious treat, it’s also healthy and good for the environment. If cold desserts aren’t your thing then you can try the toast. Made with Korean rice cake, cheese, bean flour, and nuts, the toast is sure to get your taste buds and nose going. 국에서 많은 곳을 여행 한 사람이라면 아마도 한국에는 많은 까페가 있다는 것을 깨달았을 것입니다. 그러나 그러한 까페들은 체인점 형식의 에스프레소 머신에서 뽑 아져 나오는 커피전문점이 대부 분입니다. 커피가 질린 외국 여행객이라 면, 바로 여기, 한국적인 특색이 돋보이는 디저트 까페 ‘설빙’이 여러분을 기다리고 있습니다. 우선, 대표적인 메뉴로는 설 빙이 있습니다. 설빙은 팥빙수의 한 종류로 빙수모양이 눈꽃빙수 로 이루어져 있어서 다른 빙수와 달리 가늘고 얇은 얼음으로 입에 대기만 해도 사르르 녹는 디저트 입니다. 우유를 갈아 만든 빙수 에 인절미 떡을 넣은뒤, 고물과 연유를 섞습니다. 재료는 단순하 지만 달고 시원한 데다 인절미와 우유 빙수가 어우러지는 맛이 절 묘합니다. 우유로 만들어진 얼음을 갈아 넣은 설빙은 말 그대로 눈꽃입니 다. 뽀얀 흰빛에 부드러운 느낌 입니다. 생긴것처럼 먹는 것도 우아하게 먹어야 될것 같습니다. 숟가락으로 섞어서 먹는게 아니 라, 인절미와 빙수를 한 숟가락 씩 그대로 떠먹어야 제맛을 느낄 수 있다고 합니다. 팥이 익숙하 지 않은 사람들은 딸기빙수, 요

Hello! We’re Stephen and Seo-Yeon, and we are glad to be your humble hosts on this journey into the world of flavorful, budget conscious, and easy to prepare foods.

Go get yourself some sun, and make yourself some healthy, delicious meals you can enjoy in the great outdoors, starting with this recipe for herb roasted garlic chicken. Seo-Yeon and I made this using my oven, but you can definitely fire up a grill for a classy rooftop barbecue. As with all of our recipes, the ingredients are few, and easy to find. Enjoy!

9 -12 chicken drumsticks 3 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tbsp butter A pinch of black pepper 1 tbsp of fresh parsley A pinch of herb salt (find it at HomePlus or Emart) 1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius 2. Wash the chicken thoroughly and leave it in the water until the blood in the chicken has drained out. Drain, sprinkle with pepper and herb salt and set aside.

3. Melt the butter. Add the garlic, parsley and stir to mix. Pour this mixture onto the chicken and coat evenly. Let it set for 10 minutes before placing in the oven / on the grill.

4. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the juice in the chicken runs clear. Serve with grilled vegetables and your favorite beer!

Easter Eggstravaganza Story by Gwiwon Nam

n April 19th, an ‘Easter Egg Hunt’ event was held across downtown Daegu.

Around 30 people took part in the event, the purpose of which was to come together and have some fun to celebrate the Easter weekend.

“One of my Dutch friends invited me to this event,” Angeline Souy, a French exchange student at Keimyung University, told us. “The game was really fun, but a little difficult in some parts.

I’m looking forward to the next event!”

Celebrated mainly in western culture, Easter is traditionally a religious festival to mark the resurrection of Jesus, however nowadays many people simply celebrate over food with their families, or fun games like this one. Evgeniya Tsoy, an Uzbekistan student also studying at Keimyung University said that it was interesting to learn about different cultures and traditions; “I went out with my team members, and although we were only able to find a few of the clues everyone on the street was really helpful and we discovered some new places around Daegu.”

The event was organized by Platform Daegu and HiDaegu, community projects based in the city. Editor of Platform, Laura Reynolds, said that she planned this event for the main purpose of having fun. “We wanted to bring people together over the Easter weekend and create something fun and different for them to take part in. It’s about meeting new people and discovering new places that you might never have stumbled upon before.”

HiDaegu team leader, Lee Seong-Bin told us that the two teams plan to work together to create more events like this each month; “We plan

to hold events such as cooking parties or going to baseball games together. We have yet to arrange the date of the next meeting, but you can keep up to date by following our Facebook pages. Hopefully we are able to bring people from all different cultures together and have fun!”

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

hank you for reading the seventh issue of Platform Daegu.

April was a difficult month for our native or adopted country of South Korea, and I'm sure the memory of the Sewol ferry disaster will stay with us all for a long time to come. As heartbreaking as it is to witness such a tragedy, it has been refreshing to me to see so many people come together to support one another in the aftermath. Just walking through downtown Daegu and seeing yellow ribbons or roses tied to trees, lamp posts, or designated areas reminds me how important it is to value each day as it comes and those around us. Life in Korea always seems to change in the blink of an eye, particularly as summer is fast approaching, so now is the time to appreciate the longer days and the sunny afternoons spent in the park with friends and family. Enjoy every minute of it!
