The person they chose to take on this challenge is Scooter Savoie. He brings the vision, motivation, hard work and respect a program needs to be successful. Success is not something new to Savoie and McNeese soccer. His Cowgirls have consistently attracted some of the top talent in the Southland Conference. Benefiting from developing young and talented players under his direction, McNeese has qualified for six Southland Conference Championship Tournaments. Savoie was named the program’s first coach in 1996. His teams improved each season during his tenure through 1999. McNeese posted an overall winning record in conference play during this time. He guided the program to three consecutive Southland Conference Championship Tournament appearances; leading his 1999 team to a second place finish in the league’s regular season. Savoie returned in 2003 to McNeese to bring notoriety back to the program. The Cowgirls have returned to the Southland Conference Championship Tournament in three of the last four seasons. The coaching staff and players were recognized for their 2006 championship efforts as Savoie was honored with the prestigious title of Coach of the Year by the Louisiana Sportswriters Association.
--Scooter Savoie on McNeese Player Development-“Soccer players that compete for McNeese like our team style because they can demonstrate their skills. Our attack minded principles promote freedom and creativity with the ball to create an exciting brand of winning soccer.” Savoie has the most wins of any coach in McNeese Soccer history. But the accolades for success do not stop here. Savoie has coached 33 All-Conference performers, including the 1999 SLC Player of the Year, Joy Keating. Eleven players have made the All-Tournament team in Southland Conference championship play. The program led the league in 2006 with 5 All-Tournament selections and Kamryn Koch garnering Tournament MVP. McNeese has received 14 All-Louisiana selections with Savoie at the helm. Program success is not just limited to the soccer field. McNeese Soccer led the Southland Conference in 2006 with five student-athletes selected to the All-Academic Team. The team annually ranks amongst the highest of all team sports at McNeese for academic performance and consistently maintains a GPA above 3.0. ESPN the Magazine has placed three McNeese soccer athletes on the District VI Academic All-American Team. Several of his players have earned Southland Conference Academic Honors and many have been named to McNeese President’s List. Savoie is well respected in the university and soccer communities. He is proud to serve both in various capacities. He currently serves as the Chair of Southland Conference Women’s Soccer Coaches. He sits on the McNeese Committee on Graduation Rates for Black Student Athletes and was a member of the NCAA Certification Peer Review Team, Safety and Wellness Committee. He has also served on the coaching staff of the Louisiana Olympic Development Program and the Arizona Olympic Development Program. Savoie earned his B.S. Degree from McNeese in 1992 and Master in Education from Texas A&M University in 1997. He is happily married to the former Stephanie Byrge of Tucson, Arizona. They have two daughters, Jolie Aunjelle (4 yrs.) and Gracie Ann (1 yr.).

ASSISTANT COACH
ALLISON HOLLADAY Allison Holladay possesses a wealth of experience with seven years of coaching at the NCAA Division I level. She has served in the capacity of assistant coach carrying the titles of goalkeeper coach and recruiting coordinator since 2003. In her time at McNeese State she has helped guide one goalkeeper to the SLC All-Conference First Team, and another to the SLC AllTournament First Team. The 2006 season saw the best goal keeping results in the history of the program while posting 8 shutouts using all three goalkeepers on the roster. Holladay approaches goal keeping training with the individual needs of the keeper in mind. She enjoys working closely with the players in order to enhance the assets each keeper can bring to the team. Recognizing that not all goalkeepers are the same, she designs her training sessions to aim towards specific techniques and execution. Her sessions include drills with a multiple of components in order for each goalkeeper to benefit at all times. Holladay believes daily goalkeeper training is a necessity for success. "This time for keepers to work on their own is invaluable to their development." She also works closely with Coach Savoie to match the keeper sessions to the team training theme. This allows the goalkeepers to transfer their training into a live environment with their teammates on a daily bases. Holladay also has seen success as a recruiting coordinator. Our "player-first" philosophy at McNeese State has been instrumental in recruiting the student athletes that won the 2006 Southland Conference Tournament Championship and made the program's first NCAA National Tournament Appearance. Her recruiting efforts have paid off by adding to the program a Mexico National full team player, U-15 USA National Team Player, and the New Mexico Player of the Year. Fourteen of the players on the current McNeese Squad including the 2007 recruiting class have ODP experience. Holladay strives to recruit players that are the perfect "fit" for the program. She aims to recruit players whose personalities as well as playing styles will mesh with the team and the coaching staff. After serving as an assistant coach at Southeastern Louisiana University for three seasons, Holladay joined Coach Savoie and the Cowgirl Family. She concluded her playing career in 1999 as the most decorated player in the history of Southeastern soccer, helping the Lady Lions to two Southland Conference regular season titles (1999, 2002) and a Southland Conference Tournament title (1998).

ANDREW FITZGERALD In 2007 Andrew Fitzgerald enters his third season as a Cowgirl assistant. In his second season as an assistant the Cowgirls posted their best record to date on the way to McNeese’s first Southland Conference Tournament championship and NCAA National tournament appearance. Fitzgerald primarily works with the field players and is involved in practice and game planning. Off the field his diverse duties range from travel arrangements to community outreach as well as being in charge of junior college recruiting. Fitzgerald has been successful in the junior college recruiting scene, bringing in a junior college All-American and an All- Region player in his first year in the role. He is also actively involved in the local youth soccer scene as well as being the head coach for a local boys high school team. Fitzgerald joined the program in 2005 after earning his Master’s degree from Texas A&M. While at A&M he led the Texas A&M Men’s Club soccer program to an undefeated season and a national championship in 2004. His team’s won the regional tournament both years he served as head coach and never finished below the national quarterfinals. He also coached the A&M “B” team to a national “open” quarterfinal appearance. In 2004 Fitzgerald also served as the business operations and marketing intern for the nationally ranked Aggie Women’s soccer team. While in graduate school Fitzgerald was the sport club graduate assistant for the Texas A&M Department of Rec Sports. He credits this role as key in developing his inclusive coaching philosophy. He believes that player involvement in decision making is critical to team success.

2007 SEASON OUTLOOK
It is with great anticipation that head coach Scooter Savoie enters ninth season at the helm of the McNeese soccer program. This year he leads a team with experience and maturity that is poised to contend for its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and is aspiring to repeat as the Southland Conference Tournament champions. The Cowgirls will take the field with one of the top rosters in the Southland Conference and the most talented team in the program’s 11 year history. The 2007 squad boasts 16 returning letterwinners and all 11 starters from last year’s record breaking season. “This year’s team has all the tools it takes to be successful. They love to compete, they have great chemistry and they play with both their heads and their hearts. The number of returning athletes combined with a talented recruiting class gives this team the potential to be as good as any team ever fielded by McNeese Soccer,” said Savoie.
FORWARDS
Kamryn Koch and Ja’Nae Powell, both juniors, return to action to make the Cowgirl front line one of the most dangerous in the conference. In 2006 Koch and Powell set several conference records. Koch scored the most game winning goals in the SLC and finished second in total goals scored. Powell finished third in goals scored in conference play. Powell also set a SLC Tournament record for goals scored and points in 2006. Also returning at forward is Mariana Urtaza, a 2005 NJCAA All American, who played important minutes for the Cowgirls in 2006 and scored the game winner against conference rival Sam Houston. Newcomers Mackenzie Hosford and Macie Jones both enter their freshman season with high expectations. “We know that our opponent’s back lines are going to have their hands full with this group. Kamryn and Ja’Nae are as good a duo as anyone in the league, and with Mariana peaking in her senior year and Mackenzie looking like she is ready to immediately contribute, we are looking forward to scoring a lot of goals,” said Savoie.
MIDFIELD
The Cowgirls return all four starters from a year ago. The 2007 midfield will be led by team captain Cynthia Torres, a 2006 all-SLC second team selection and 2007 preseason second team selection, enters her senior year. Sara Overfelt, a senior, also returns to compete for the starting job. “Cynthia is a quiet leader on the field. She distributes the ball extremely well, but can also be a threat on the dribble. She and her sister (Mayra) play extremely well off one anther.” “Sara is a great utility player. We ask her to play outside mid one game and forward the next. She can play every position on the pitch, and will be asked to play some defense for us this year as well as filling her midfield responsibilities.” Mayra Torres and Devon Glynn, both juniors, fill out the returning starters from a year ago. “Devon and Mayra both performed extremely well in the spring

and really put their mark on their respective positions. Mayra has tremendous technical ability and combines with her teammates very well. Devon really showed us what she is capable of in the spring and we expect that she will turn some heads this fall.” Freshman Alana Clark and redshirt sophomore Kyra McDonough are both expected to compete for a starting position. “Alana’s experience training with the national squad as a youth player is really going to serve her well as she comes in and is expected to contribute immediately. She is a very smart player on the field and will be competing for a starting slot from day one. “ “Kyra’s vision and passing touch are something we really missed last year and we look forward to having that back for 2007.”
DEFENSE
The Cowgirls’ success in 2006 was due largely to a stingy defense that earned two shutouts in the conference tournament and boasted the second most shutouts in the conference. The team looks well suited to repeat that success as they return all four defenders from last season including a 2006 all-SLC Tournament pick and team captain Renee Landers. The defense is anchored by junior Justeen Lords at center back who enters 2007 having never missed a match or failed to start in a collegiate match. “Justeen has been a rock in the back for us. She does not play flashy soccer so sometimes she may not get the recognition she deserves, but our defensive success is due in large part to her contributions,” said Savoie. Joining Landers and Lords in the back is sophomore Erin Leighton who played every match in 2006. Lauren Slater, a junior outside back has started nearly every game since her freshman year, will round out the defense. Rachel Wright, Sara Overfelt, Erica Shepard and Wendy Redpath are also expected to play key minutes on the back line.
GOALKEEPERS
The Cowgirls’ net is protected by two junior goalkeepers in Shelby Money and Labrie Pritzen. Both have seen significant time in the goal over the last two years with Money receiving the nod for the conference tournament in 2006. In the SLC tournament she allowed only two goals and earned two shutouts in 290 minutes played. Money was named to the all-tournament team and is a preseason all-SLC pick. “Shelby’s work ethic and her quick reactions make her one of the toughest keepers to beat in the Southland,” said keeper coach Allison Holladay. Labrie Pritzen earned two clean sheets in her four starts as a sophomore including an overtime win against Texas State. “Labrie is a well rounded goalkeeper with many assets that give her a strong presence in the net.” “Our goalkeepers are well prepared to take on every opponent. We expect both keepers to compete for the starting spot and it is possible that both will see significant playing time during the season,” said Holladay.

McNeese State University
In 1938, Louisiana founded McNeese State University, then known as the Lake Charles Junior College, as a division of Louisiana State University. The opening session of the college began on September 11, 1939. The following fall, the school changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to honor John McNeese, a renowned South-west Louisiana educator and the first superintendent of schools in Imperial Calcasieu Parish. In 1950 McNeese became a four-year college in its own right and came under the authority of the Louisiana Board of Education. Finally, in 1970, McNeese State University became the official name of the school. The University provides opportunities for continuing education in support of its mission to value lifelong learning. As a member of the University of Louisiana System and a selective admissions institution, McNeese offers degrees through six academic colleges: Business, Education, Engineering and Technology, Liberal Arts, Nursing, and Science. McNeese’s student body comprises over 8,500 students from throughout Louisiana, the United States, and approximately 50 countries. McNeese’s athletic programs are NCAA-certified for competition at I-AA and I-A levels. The soccer team won the school's first ever conference tournament title and appeared in the NCAA Tournament in 2006. The McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana features 68 buildings on 500 acres dotted with live oak trees and azalea bushes. The McNeese community continues to use the three original structures - Kaufman Hall, Ralph O. Ward Memorial Gym (the Arena), and Francis G. Bulber Auditorium. Bulber Auditorium, a striking example of Art Deco architecture, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. McNeese State University upholds a long tradition of service to the Southwest Louisiana community and the nation. The University’s motto of “Excellence with a Personal Touch” extends beyond the classroom to offering help to others in times of need. During World War II, the campus was the headquarters of the Louisiana Maneuvers, an extensive military exercise to prepare American soldiers for battle. In 1957, the McNeese community gave aid and comfort to the victims of Hurricane Audrey and served as the National Guard’s base of rescue operations. McNeese provided shelter for New Orleans residents and university students fleeing Hurricane Katrina in 2005. McNeese faced one of its greatest challenges when Hurricane Rita struck in the fall that same year. The storm caused devastating damage to campus facilities and infrastructure. The recovery effort after Hurricane Rita showed the community of Southwest Louisiana the high caliber of McNeese faculty, staff, and students in their commitment to complete the semester and move forward in support of the core values of academic excellence, student success, fiscal responsibility, and university/community alliances.

STATE OF LOUISIANA
The state of Louisiana is conveniently organized into five distinct regions (Greater New Orleans, Cajun Country, Plantation Country, Crossroads, Sportsman's Paradise, each offering a different Nickname: The Pelican State experience. It’s part of the cultural geography that makes this a great Admitted to Union: April 30, 1812 place to live. State Colors: Gold, White, Blue Louisiana is one of the nation's largest producers of cotton, State Bird: Brown Pelican sugarcane, rice, sweet potatoes and pecans. State Dog: Catahoula Leopard The state is also a major producer of soybeans and corn. The State Tree: Bald Cypress State Flower: Magnolia biggest land-based industry in the state is forestry, with an economic impact from paper-making and wood products greater than all other crops combined. Poultry is the largest livestock industry, followed by dairy and beef cattle. Louisiana is also the nation's largest producer of alligator hides and crawfish. Louisiana's approximately 3,650 manufacturing units employ some 190,000 wage and salary workers whose annual earnings are $1.9 billion. The state annually produces nearly five billion dollars worth of products, including petroleum, chemicals, plastics, clothing, wood products, industrial alcohol, wallboard, cement, seafood, glass, drugs and many more. Louisiana has a semi-tropical climate. Variations in daily temperature are determined by distances from the Gulf of Mexico and, to a lesser degree, by differences in elevation. The average annual temperature for the state as a whole is 67.4. January is the coldest month (average 50.7), and July and August the warmest (average 82). Snow is rare in southern Louisiana, but occasionally falls are recorded in the northern parts of the state. Average annual rainfall is 55.45 inches.

LAKE CHARLES
The first people to settle the lake were Mr. and Mrs. LeBleu of Bordeaux, France. They arrived in 1781 and secured their home six miles east of the present site of Lake Charles, living in peaceful coexistence with several tribes of Indians. This area originally settled by the LeBleu's is now known as LeBleu Settlement. Other pioneers quickly ventured to Lake Charles. Among them was Charles Sallier who married LeBleu's daughter, Catherine. The Sallier's built their home on the lake, in the area now known as Lake Charles. After Charles Sallier built his home in this area, the lake became known as Charlie's Lake. By 1860 this area was being called "Charleston" or "Charles Town." Settlers at the turn of the century acquired property from the Indians or they homesteaded the Rio Hondo lands. The Rio Hondo which flowed through Lake Charles was later called Quelqueshue, an Indian term meaning "Crying Eagle" and still later Calcasieu. Little is known of these early residents except that they were a mixture of English, French, Spanish and Dutch. On March 7, 1861, Lake Charles was incorporated as the town of Charleston, Louisiana. The growth of the city was fairly slow until Captain Daniel Goos came in 1855. He established a lumber mill and schooner dock, now Goosport, and promoted a profitable trade with Texas and Mexican ports by sending his schooner down-river into the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the wood which built the city came from Goos' mill. Until the arrival of Goos, Jacob Ryan dominated the lumber industry. Ryan convinced the state government to move the parish seat to Lake Charles. Later that year, Ryan and Samuel Kirby transferred the parish courthouse and jail to Lake Charles, at that time called Charleston. Six years after the city was incorporated, dissatisfaction over the name Charleston arose. On March 16, 1867, Charleston, Louisiana, was incorporated into the town of Lake Charles.

New Orleans: 205.2 miles With more than 75 fairs, festivals and special events each year, our area has celebrations down to an art form - complete with food, music, lights and laughter. Contraband Days is one of Louisiana’s largest festivals and the City of Lake Charles' oldest festival. Contraband Days is a 12-day festival/carnival extravaganza filled with savory cajun food, family fun and festivities, and is attended by over 200,000 people annually. Each year during the first two weeks in May the city officially celebrates the legend of the pirate Jean Lafitte with its Contraband Days celebration. History tells us that Lafitte and his band of pirates once sailed the area's waterways and are said to have buried Lafitte's Contraband treasure somewhere in the vicinity of the lake. The festivities kick off every year with a pirate ship bombardment to "take control of the city" at the seawall of the Lake Charles Civic Center. A gang of rowdy and unruly buccaneers led by Jean Lafitte himself overruns the blazing cannons of the local militia, raises their "Jolly Roger" flag, captures the Mayor and forces him - with swords drawn - to walk the plank into the swirling waters of the lake.
