Now in its third year, Shift Happens: ALT Shift, is continuing to show individuals and organisations from the arts, learning and technology sectors how to make the most of the growing opportunities which new technologies offer.
ABOUT THE EVENT
Shift Happens is a two day conference hosted by Pilot Theatre at York Theatre Royal. Building on the success of the last two Shift Happens conferences, delegates can find out about the latest developments and applications in digital technology, try them out in workshops, discuss inspiring case studies, network, find partners for future collaborations and explore how working digitally can open up new areas of funding and sustainable working for organisations.

SPEAKERS SIR KEN ROBINSON - sirkenrobinson.com LIVE FROM LA Sir Ken Robinson, PhD is an internationally recognized leader in the development of creativity, innovation and human resources. He has worked with governments in Europe, Asia and the USA, with international agencies, Fortune 500 companies, and some of the world’s leading cultural organizations. For twelve years he was Professor of Education at the University of Warwick in the UK and is now Professor Emeritus. He has received honorary degrees from the Open University and the Central School of Speech and Drama; Birmingham City University, Rhode Island School of Design, Ringling College of Art and Design and the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. In 2005 he was named as one of Time/Fortune/CNN’s Principal Voices. In 2003, he received a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II for his services to the arts. He speaks to audiences throughout the world on the creative challenges facing business and education in the new global economies. His new book, a New York Times Best Seller, ‘The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything’ (Penguin/Viking 2009) is being translated into sixteen languages.

SPEAKERS JONATHAN HARRIS - number27.org Jonathan Harris makes projects that reimagine how humans relate to technology and to each other. Combining elements of computer science, anthropology, visual art and storytelling, his projects range from building the world’s largest time capsule (with Yahoo!) to documenting an Alaskan Eskimo whale hunt on the Arctic Ocean (with a warm hat). He is the co-creator of We Feel Fine, which continuously measures the emotional temperature of the human world through large-scale blog analysis, and has made other projects about online dating, modern mythology, anonymity, news, and language. After studying computer science at Princeton University, he won a 2005 Fabrica fellowship and three Webby Awards. His work has also been recognized by AIGA, Ars Electronica, the state of Vermont (for which he co-designed the state quarter), Print Magazine (which named him a 2008 New Visual Artist) and The World Economic Forum (which named him a 2009 Young Global Leader). He has given talks at Google, Princeton and Stanford Universities, the TED Conference, and at two hippy forest gatherings. His projects have been shown at The Museum of Modern Art (New York), Le Centre Pompidou (Paris), and have appeared on CNN, NPR, BBC, and Bhutanese television. Born in Vermont, he now floats between Brooklyn, NY, the open road, and cyberspace, documenting his life with one photo a day.
SPEAKERS Tom Loosemore - 4ip.org.uk Tom is head of Channel 4’s 4IP project, a creative fund that aims to re-invent how publicly-valuable content is conceived, funded and delivered for British audiences on new media platforms. Prior to this, Tom has worked as a senior adviser on digital media strategy at Ofcom, and as the former head of broadband and emerging strategies at the BBC. During that time he played a key role in developing a wide range of new media proposals, many of which featured in ‘Building Public Value’, the BBC’s vision for the next ten years, along with performing a review of the BBC’s current activity on the web. Prior to joining the BBC, Tom was Director of Internet Applications at UPC, Europe’s largest cable company. Previously, he has been web editor of London’s largest radio station, Capital Radio. He was responsible for developing the multiple award-winning local information website UpMyStreet.com. From 1995 until 1997 he was a Section Editor on the UK edition of Wired Magazine.

She studied Drama and English at Kent University. She was a founder member of the City Limits cooperative where she edited the theatre section, before joining the Guardian.

SPEAKERS DAVID SABEL - nationaltheatre.org.uk National Theatre Head of Digital Media David Sabel trained as an actor at Northwestern University in Chicago and Jacques Lecoq in Paris. After having worked as a chef for three years, he received an MBA from Cambridge University. His dissertation, looking at digital opportunities in the arts, brought him to the National Theatre where he stayed on to produce the pilot season of NT Live and the National’s first documentary commission, Making War Horse. The National Theatre’s digital strategy is a central strand of the National Theatre’s ambition to engage more widely and deeply with audiences. The Digital Media Unit will look to increase the reach of NT Live; develop the National Theatre’s new media tools and resources; create more high-quality content around the productions in the repertoire; and experiment with new technologies, methods of production and distribution.

SPEAKERS ALICE GREENWALD - national911memorial.org LIVE FROM NEW YORK Alice Greenwald joined the National September 11 Memorial & Museum at The World Trade Center in April 2006 as executive vice-president for programs and director of the Memorial Museum. In this capacity, she is responsible for managing and overseeing the articulation and implementation of a vision for the planned National September 11 Memorial Museum, and for the eventual programming and operation of the Museum. From September 2001 to February 2006, Ms. Greenwald served as an associate museum director for museum programs at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. From 1986-2001, she served as principal of Alice M. Greenwald/Museum Services (USHMM), providing consulting expertise to a variety of clients in addition to USHMM. Prior to the establishment of her consulting business, she served as the executive director of the National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia; acting director, curator and assistant curator of the Hebrew Union College Skirball Museum, Los Angeles; and curatorial assistant at the Maurice Spertus Museum of Judaica, Chicago. Ms. Greenwald has served as a chairperson for the Council of American Jewish Museums and is the recipient of several awards. She is a graduate of Sarah Lawrence College and holds an A.M. in history of religions from the University of Chicago Divinity School.
SPEAKERS DK - mediasnackers.com Founding Director, MediaSnackers DK is the founding director of Media Snackers. Mediasnackers was a term he coined back in early 2006 whilst describing what young people were doing with media. The site was launched a few months later in June. He has an educational background in communications and media, plus a professional background in local government, being the UK’s first and only Corporate Youth Officer. DK has a passion for working with young people and youth professionals, and this has been his focus for the past decade.

SPEAKERS CLARE REDDINGTON - pmstudio.co.uk Clare is Director of iShed and the Pervasive Media Studio. Clare works with industry, academic and creative partners to deliver collaborative research around digital technology and the creative industries. She likes finding new talent, supporting great projects, showcasing new ideas and playing games. Clare joined Watershed in Bristol in 2004 to work with HP Labs on utility computing animation project SE3D. In 2007, Clare set up iShed CIC as a subsidiary of Watershed, to initiate and support creative technology research and development. Projects include the R&D investment scheme Media Sandbox, Light Up Bristol, which mapped 400ft projections on to Bristol’s Council house, and the Creative Technology Network. Before joining Watershed, Clare organised the Cheltenham Festival of Science, an annual five day festival exploring, promoting and encouraging debate around contemporary scientific development. Clare is a member of the Arts and Humanities Research Council Advisory Board and has acted as an assessor for the Technology Strategy Board’s Creative Industries funding and is a finalist in the Bristish Council’s UK Young Interactive Entrepreneur 2009.
SPEAKERS ABHAY ADHIKARI - dhyandesign.com Multimedia designer; Working towards Breath-awareness in mainstream education. “As a multimedia designer I have always tried to work with people from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds. I believe that the www is a fantastic medium for creative collaboration.” Abhay has worked with musicians, performance artists, writers and human rights activists from India, UK, USA, Australia and Japan. In 2004, whilst working with an Indian classical musician and a Dutch electronic artists he produced a musical project that was conceived and developed via instant messenger. It was featured in the Times of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express and Radio 1 - Netherlands. In 2009 he completed his PhD research at the University of York, which looked at ways in which breath-control training could be introduced into primary schools in England. This led to the development of biofeedback based gaming technology as well as a pragmatic and secular framework of working with children to introduce breathing as a dynamic medium for anger-management. The latter caught the attention of the Japanese education sector and he has just completed a five-city tour of Japan – working with over 170 children and 50 primary school teachers. Various aspects of this work have been supported by UK Trade & Investment and Sir Jack Lyons Research Scholarship.

SPEAKERS TIM WHEELER - mind-the-gap.org.uk Tim is Artistic Director and co-founder of Mind the Gap. Mind the Gap is a theatre company that aims to dismantle the barriers that prevent disabled and non-disabled artists working together as equals. He studied in UK and in Brazil with Augusto Boal and is interested in interactive theatre and emerging aesthetics. Mind the Gap recently moved into the old dyehouse of Lister Mill’s, Bradford. Mind the Gap studios are extremely well wired; equipped to showcase theatre, film against green screen, record and edit video and audio all under one roof. They are interested in assistive technologies and universal design: automatic doors, a building management system that controls their audio and visual equipment, the blinds, and a visual and audio relay between studios. Tim’s interest in new technologies is very simple, he looks for underpinning concepts rather than the hardware or software itself. Questioning whether it is useful, beautiful and whether it assists creative dialogue. Tim is also interested in old technologies such as string, gaffa tape and non-violent direct action; whatever works. He also likes testing things to the point of destruction, often investigating how close to the edge he can get? Tim is inquisitive and approachable and always on the look out for people and practice that can help us in our work. He says “If you can help, then let’s talk.”
SPEAKERS MARCUS ROMER - pilot-theatre.com Marcus is the Artistic Director of Pilot Theatre, the national touring theatre company based at York Theatre Royal. He adapted and directed Looking For JJ which won the TMA award for best production in 2008. His production of Lord of the Flies for Pilot Theatre had five national UK tours and has received a TMA award nomination and won a Manchester Evening News award. His co-production of Jonathan Harvey’s Beautiful Thing with the Octagon Theatre, Bolton won two Manchester Evening News Awards in 2005. He was invited to attend the TED conference in California in 2007 where he furthered his interest in technology in the Arts. On returning he formulated the Shift Happens conference in the UK which started in July 2008, and ran again as Shift Happens 2.0 in 2009. He set up ALT Shift to run in 2010 He is a regular speaker and trainer for conferences where he looks at the digital opportunities for the Arts with Technology.

SPEAKERS HANNAH NICKLIN - hannahnicklin.com Playwright, Blogger and PhD Student Hannah Nicklin is a playwright, blogger, social media advocate, technophile and PhD student. She is interested in how theatre can portray and explore the experience of technology, as well as wiki/open source ethics and their application online, in the arts, and in wider society. She works with arts companies on their social media ‘strategies’, and works at events amplifying the content through social media. She doesn’t particularly like the word ‘strategy’. She blogs, generally covets technology, and is doing a PhD with practice in theatre and digital technology at Loughborough University.
SPEAKERS IAN ASPIN - reallygoodthinking.co.uk TV Journalist, Presenter and Producer “Think Better. Feel Better. Take an Aspin.” Ian is a journalist, producer, presenter, and part of an independent production company in Lancashire. Though he’s worked mostly in TV and radio, he is excited to be involved in the fantastic possibilities for connectedness, new ways of thinking and living, journalism and storytelling, that are emerging from the global digital revolution. Through his work making programmes and covering all kinds of stories, he has spent time discovering, meeting, interviewing, and hanging out with outstanding people from all sorts of backgrounds. Most have interesting thoughts, do amazing things, and often love to pass on great ideas they’ve found helpful in creating the life they have today. He is passionate about all that good stuff. He wants to use it, wrestle with it, share it, and help people make a positive difference, rather than just keeping it in his head.

SPEAKERS JOHN MCGRATH - nationaltheatrewales.org John has worked as a theatre director in New York, London, Manchester, and now Wales. From 1999-2008 he was Artistic Director of Contact Theatre, Manchester where he had a lot of success developing new artists and vibrant young audiences. As a director, he has worked with a wide range of artists in Manchester, including poet Lemn Sissay (Storm, Something Dark and Why I Don’t Hate White People) and hip hop theatre artist Benji Reid (b like water). John says that some of his favourite directing projects there included a multi-media collaboration with writer Kaite O’Reilly and visual artist Paul Clay (Perfect) and the theatre installation Close Up with Contact Young Actors Company. Earlier on, he trained and worked in New York for several years, including a stint as Associate Director of leading experimental company Mabou Mines. In 2004 he published a book about art in the surveillance age, “Loving Big Brother: Performance, Privacy and Surveillance Space” (Routledge 2004). He was the Co-Founder and Chair of PANDA, the Performing Arts Network and Development Agency, and in 2005 he was lucky enough to be awarded the National Endowment for Science Technology and the Arts (NESTA) Cultural Leadership Award which allowed him to spend time with theatre and arts companies in Europe and South America.
SPEAKERS HERB KIM - codeworks.net Herb is the Director of the Thinking Digital Conference and the CEO of Codeworks, and has over 17 years of experience in technology and media related businesses. Prior to his current role, Herbert was at mobile phone operator 02, where he was Head of Marketing for 02’s incubator division. Other senior roles include UK Managing Director for QXL.com, Head of Partner Relations at BOL.com, General Manager of Blackwell’s Online Bookshop and Marketing Manager at IBM. Herbert has an MBA in Strategic Management from the Wharton School and graduated with honors in History at Princeton University. Herbert was born in Brooklyn, NY and has resided in the UK for 13 years. He and his partner have the privilege of raising a young daughter, Alice.

SPEAKERS ALAN LANE - slunglow.org Slung Low is the new work installation company based out of West Yorkshire. Creating work that in different ways asks an audience to physically move through a narrative, the company concentrates on making bespoke work for a full variety of spaces; whether that be on a high street or in the stalls of a theatre. Previous commissions include work with the Barbican, the Lowry, the Almeida Theatre and Liverpool European Capital of Culture. In 2010 Slung Low received funding to inhabit a series of railway arches in South Leeds working towards creating a centre for artists to develop and present progressive performance work. Alan Lane is the Artistic Director of Slung Low, directing all the company’s past productions. He is a selector for the National Student Drama Festival and producer of Development Lab, producing progressive new work in Bradford.
SPEAKERS KAYE ELLING- twitter.com/k_0 Kaye Elling is the Lecturer in Computer Games at the University of Bradford and is the Course Leader for their BA Graphics for Games and BSc Interactive Systems and Video Game Design courses. Kaye’s background is in game development where she spent some 13 years working as an artist, lead artist and art manager for companies including Infogrames, Sony and Blitz Games Studios. She has developed games for most consoles and has a title history that includes the Premier Manager series, the Bratz series and most recently the Encleverment Experiment on XBLA among many more. A proud Girl Geek, Kaye is passionately committed to raising awareness of game development as a viable career for women. This is probably why she is co-chair for the Women in Games conference 2010, held at the University of Bradford in collaboration with Bradford College.

SPEAKERS CHRISTINE MORRIS - appsandhats.com Christine is the producer of Apps and Hats, a quirky iPhone application review show. But it’s not all about the apps, she wants women in technology to really go for it in their own creative and expressive ways and as an educator wants to help change happen. A Canadian living in the UK for over ten years, with what she refers to as a healthy obsession with technology, she is always after the latest trends and research in the field hoping to explore and push it further. She has received joint Arts Council and British Council funding for a number of Digital Artworks which have been shown Internationally. Working in education for several years keeps her motivated and it was research and her fascination to use the technologies out there that led her to Apps and Hats, created only a few months after the launch of the App Store. This geek at heart is hoping her enthusiasm and message will help to get others excited about technology enough to go and use it in creative ways too.

Lovle enables you to quickly and easily find and legally remix & collate learning content while keeping track of copyright licences. Joscelyn is also involved in Creative Commons UK as the Public Project Lead for England & Wales, which involves helping to raise awareness of creative commons licences as a means to enable legal sharing of creative works. Prior to co-founding lovle Joscelyn worked as a solicitor and a lecturer.

SPEAKERS SIAN ALEXANDER - juliesbicycle.com Sian is an independent consultant in the arts sector and Associate Director, Theatre for Julie’s Bicycle with whom she is leading a national programme to support the UK theatre industry to adapt to a low carbon economy. She was Head of Theatre for Arts Council England, London for ten years until February 2010. Prior to joining the Arts Council Sian worked for a range of performing arts companies, producing and touring theatre and contemporary dance throughout the UK and overseas. She was Executive Director of Siobhan Davies Dance Company; Manager for Michael Clark Company, Aletta Collins Dance Company and Laurie Booth; and Assistant Manager of the Bush Theatre. Sian is a Clore Fellow. During her fellowship (2006 – 2008) she was seconded to Tate to develop a Climate Change Strategy and undertook a research project ‘Cultural Leadership in a Changing Climate.’ Sian is a CLP/PCT accredited coach and action learning facilitator. She is Chair of Governors at Grove Park Primary School, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a graduate of Balliol College, Oxford where she studied Modern History.
SPEAKERS ADAM STANNING - punk-pie.com Adam is a concept designer. When he is not designing international museums with his company Bright White Ltd, he is creating artworks for installations. When he is not doing either of those two things, he is designing computer games. Adam is a founding director of Punk Pie Ltd, who will release a revolutionary new mobile game in April 2010 - Aurifi. Leanne Hammacott has worked with body>data>space since its formation in 2005, coming from a background in dance/body and technology.

SPEAKERS HANNAH RUDMAN Hannah runs Envirodigital – a lighthouse brand, guiding the creative industries in an environmentally sustainable direction through championing digital technologies. Envirodigital believes that getting digital can facilitate getting greener and helps organisations create truly economically and ecologically sustainable digital developments. Hannah is founder of Rudman Consulting Ltd, has been working through independent consultancy for the cultural, charitable and education sectors in the UK since 2001. Hannah advises on cultural policy development around digital development and environmental sustainability, and speaks internationally and regularly on these themes at cultural sector conferences. She is currently Specialist Advisor to the Scottish Arts Council, for whom she wrote “Getting Digital”; an Associate with Mission Models Money; Specialist Advisor to IC:Innovative Craft; and Specialist Advisor in digital for Cultural Enterprise Office. She is creator and Lead Consultant of Arts Council England’s and Scottish Arts Council’s AmbITion, a national change programme that utilises IT and digital developments to facilitate the longer-term sustainability of arts organisations. Hannah is also Arts Professional’s “Harnessing IT” columnist; a lecturer in the School of Computing at Edinburgh Napier University; and on the boards of Milk With 2 Sugars and New Media Scotland. Rohan Gunatillake is a Director of Mission Models Money - a networked organisation working with cultural organisations and their funders to build resilience, relevance and a sense of responsibility. In his capacity as an independent consultant he is currently leading the initial phase of the Edinburgh Festivals Innovation Lab, a major new experiment in cultural innovation.
Previously Rohan has worked for NESTA, Accenture and IBM and when not doing any of these things he works on The Here&Now Project, a new initiative exploring what happens when meditation and modern life meet.

SPEAKERS Andy Field - forestfringe.co.uk Andy describes himself as the maker of unusual things. He’s created events and encounters at BAC, The Southbank Centre, SHUNT and the Dublin Film Festival amongst others. Some of the projects he has made include an audio instillation in an old car for The Arches in Glasgow, a imaginary movie-house that has appeared in cinemas across the country and a game of Chinese whispers played through the streets of London. In addition to this he is co-director of the award winning Forest Fringe and a regular contributor to the Guardian Theatre Blog. He’s also in the process of completing a PhD on the relationship between contemporary performance and the New York avant-garde of the 60s and early 70s.
PERFORMANCE CRAIG VEAR - ev2.co.uk/vear Vear works with found sounds, making compositions using computers that allow the individual sounds to be free. In 1997 he co-founded the pop group Cousteau, which made 300,000 sales worldwide. During 2003-4 he held the Arts Council England Fellowship with the British Antarctic Survey. The Cape Jeremy Affair is an attempt to create a piece of music from a book: a 1969 sledge report from the British Antarctic Survey that described an arduous, and ultimately aborted, rescue attempt by four dog teams from Stonington Island to Fossil Bluff, where several geophysicists had sought shelter following a plane crash. A routine geophysical survey ended up being a survival exercise with 4 men and 27 huskies adrift on an ice floe. It is not a piece of music about the report, nor is it with the report – as in a libretto – but something that is more inbetween. In this sense the music is created from within the report; that is to say, the imaginary dimension that the report generates when read, or was in the mind of the author when written. Theatre is usually a place of seeing, however, Vear is interested in it being a place of see-hearing. The main concern is to take the mind of the audience to other places, and create a ‘dimension’ for their minds ear to wander. The overall result is a constantly shifting image of this dimension: it will start and then stop, and the stuff that happens inbetween will be both the report and the music. shift-happens.co.uk

ALSO... TAGTOOL - illuminatingyork.org.uk The Tagtool is a performative visual instrument used on stage and on the street. It serves as a VJ tool, a creative video game, or an intuitive way of creating animation. The system is operated collaboratively by an artist drawing the pictures and an animator adding movement to the artwork with a gamepad. The design achieves virtually unlimited artistic complexity with a simple set of controls, which can be mastered even by children.
