“The best theatre companies play many parts... It is no longer enough for companies to put on plays and hope that people turn up. The most exciting theatre at the moment is interactive, collaborative and out there Pilot Theatre may be funded as a company and currently has a version of Romeo and Juliet out on tour, but it does far more than just stage plays – it's a multi-platform organisation no more likely to be found creating work in theatres as on the web, putting out podcasts or organising brilliant conferences such as Shift Happens... Lyn Gardner - The Guardian - October 2010

What Light? by Richard Hurford and Giuditta Mingucci directed by Katie Posner As part of our Platform 11+ project A new commissioned play that will open at York Theatre Royal and then play as part of the International Festival in Dresden. "2061 and it’s a different world for fourteen year old Sid. No school, no shops, no internet, no escape from the rain that keeps on falling, but it’s the only life he’s ever known. Living behind barbed wire fences with a crazy gran and his undead uncles, the only thing he knows for sure is that the family in the tent at the top of the hill are to blame for it all. Then one day a girl with blood on her hands appears from the opposite camp and the world begins to change. Together they discover life wasn’t always like this and find out what really happened to all the bright lights and the good times. A vision of the not too distant future." This has been inspired by our Romeo and Juliet production and with our co-writing Italian Theatre partners we will be making this piece accessible for our audiences of 11 – 14 as part of the Platform11 plus project. We will work in partnership with York Theatre Royal, Theater Elsinore, Milan and the RSAMD students. It will visit and the International festival in Dresden in June Our Associate Director will lead this project as part of this project.

Blackbird by David Harrower Directed by Katie Posner The Olivier award winning best play of 2007 co-production with York Theatre Royal – Pilot Theatre we will then take it on tour in 2011 At his workplace, 55-year-old Ray is shocked to be visited by a young woman, 27-year-old Una. 15 years earlier, when Una was only 12, the two had a sexual affair, for which Ray was arrested and imprisoned. He has managed to establish a reasonably successful new life under another name, but Una recognises him in a photograph and tracked him down. Their analysis of the past and confrontation about the future forms the core of this psychological drama – which is current, unsettling and stunningly written. This further develops our older ‘Catcher’ audience and will tour Our Associate Director will lead on this project and put together the team and direct the show.

Class Enemy In a run down schoolroom a group of foul-mouthed high school students conduct their own lessons as they await teachers who never arrive. Their parents, social workers and society in general have abandoned them. Class Enemy is based on Nigel Williams's play set in South London...updated and remixed and recalibrated for 2013 We witness seven teenagers' dramatic and poignant life stories which paint a bleak picture of family life, local politics and terror. They are underprivileged but they are gifted and eager to be recognised, acknowledged, confronted and taught about life. In the isolated classroom chairs fly, emotions run high and violence erupts as the pupils burst with adolescent energy, humour and vulnerability. We plan to take over a space and make it happen...

Blood, Sweat and Chocolate The Rowntree Story A new type of Community Production for the City

Joseph Rowntree (1836–1925) was a Quaker, successful businessman and philanthropist, who with his brother developed the major Rowntree confectionery company from its modest beginnings as a cocoa works in York. He wanted his money to be used to tackle the root causes of social problems, rather than treating their symptoms. In 1904, he established what was to become the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF). research and development programme and on work to take forward key messages. Using archive material, verbatim reports and stories we will weave together a story of welfare, housing and chocolate to tell the unique story of this philanthropic journey. Uncovering our recent social history and how this shaped the world we know it today A story about York, by York, for Everyone

Rare Earth A docu-drama exploring a live feed of the need for Lanthanides... A radio-style reportage drama that will be built from online feeds will explore and discover how dependent we are on these now very precious metals

Large quantities of rare earth metals are needed to make photovoltaic panels, rare earth magnets for wind generators, fuel cells and high-capacity batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles. Metals like gallium, indium, selenium, tellurium, and high purity silicon are needed to make photovoltaic panels, while batteries require zinc, vanadium, lithium and rare earth elements, and platinum group minerals are needed for fuel cell-powered vehicles. One of the biggest sources of these scarce metals is China - and it's starting to play hardball But the treasure trove beneath the rocks and ice of the Ilimaussaq Intrusion in Greenland represents the world’s largest known reserve of rare earth metals, the “technology” group of lanthanide elements used in products from mobile phones and low-energy light bulbs to hybrid cars and missile guidance systems. The find has the potential, its developers claim, to severely dent China’s global monopoly over rare earth production, a 95 per cent dominance of total worldwide output that Beijing has strategically nurtured for 15 years and recently has started to treat as a potent trade weapon.
