osaporn Tephabutra has an extensive background in Politics, especially as he is married to Anchalee Vanich Tephabutra, a renowned Phuket politician. He has been appointed to many significant political posts, but principally those related to the Tourism Industry.
On the responsibilities of being Member of Parliament for Phuket with particular regard to the Tourism Industry “Under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, we are responsible for tourism not just in Phuket but for the whole of Thailand and so we have to try to maintain a balanced outlook for the benefit of the whole country. Our department provides information on the Industry to the Government and makes suggestions which we think will benefit Thailand as a whole. For example, when the Government injects money into the market, we closely examine the effect and evaluate the outcome.”
“One very important problem is that Thailand currently has quite a strong currency compared to our neighbouring countries and Europe. Additionally, as we know, every corner of the world is confronting a global financial crisis. Most of our tourists are European, and when world forces conspire to make everyone think twice before spending their money on a holiday, many people would probably prefer to economize by changing their tourist destination to a nearer country where the currency is weaker than it is currently in Thailand. In this circumstance we have to underscore our strong points and luckily for us, no one can truly imitate Thai hospitality and that special Thai touch. It’s not just about stimulating the economy by pushing money into the market, but we have to accentuate our good points and show the world our beautiful culture. We need to put emphasis on the things we have and the people we are, not the things we want or people we want to be because there’s still no place in the world quite like Thailand.” “We have sea, sun, and sand in Phuket and the Andaman region and we can use these resources to highlight our strong points. Many foreigners come here to see the real Thailand. They accept Eastern cultures more than the past, and want to know and learn more about the country.”
Three major projects are coming soon “The government will be pushing for a Phuket Convention Centre capable of holding up to 6,000 people and is striving to create an open air sports arena and complex. Also, it intends to raise the Phuket Technical College, Thalang Campus, to university status. In this way we aim to improve Phuket to be a hub for many activities which can gather income for the country. As Phuket already has an international airport, beautiful beaches plus international standard hotels and resorts, we are already making the most of what we have.”

Alain Cohen a man behind the success, La Colline
I
n every person’s life there comes at time when a spot of spiritual renewal is called for, and when it comes it has to be done in the right place. Somewhere away from it all, quiet, surrounded by hills covered in lush greenery and beautiful tropical flowers. Somewhere to relax in your own private pool, eyes closed, mind in neutral, and stress a distant memory. Imagine this, then opening your eyes to take in the deep blue of the sky reaching down to touch the rich green of the land. This is La Colline. And the man behind La Colline is Alain Cohen whose emphasis on ’affordability’ makes the dream accessible to all. Phuketindex.com had an insightful interview with him just a few weeks ago.
On his background:
Alain is a 58 year old Frenchman who has done many things in his life before deciding to run a property business in Phuket. One of his projects for example, was to open a textile factory in Vientiane, Laos in 1993, something he kept running himself until just over one year ago.
On starting La Colline:
“We bought the land about 4 years ago just after the tsunami disaster. When we first went to view it, we found that it was a really beautiful land here in Phuket surrounded, as it is all year, by lush
tropical greenery. We conceived the idea to build affordable villas in the beautiful environment, making the most of the views. We then contacted A49-Architect 49, one of the best known architectural companies in Thailand, and asked it to design reasonably sized houses at a similarly reasonable price, whilst making the most of the space. As I expected, they have done a pretty good job.”
On the most successful way to promote La Colline:
“I can safely say that word of mouth has been our best advertisement. So far we have sold almost 45% of the project, which is great, mostly to friends, and friends of friends who live in Bangkok, Indonesia, Shanghai, Taipei and even France. We have focused our marketing strategy on people who love Phuket and want to live here, or people who love to come here very often. Coupled with our reasonable price, this strategy has been successful.”
On his working principle:
“Actually, I have many ‘working principles’, but I know my limitations so I gather good professional people around me. Each task is analyzed then assigned to the right specialist whom I trust to make the right decisions. I limit myself to managing these people, and in this way I let them have the confidence to work with me and hopefully promote a happy working atmosphere. If we are happy, our customers should, in turn, be happy with the outcome.” www.phuketindex.com

n dealing with the current financial crisis:
“Luckily, the financial aspect has been secured with La Colline. Since it’s inception we made sure that we had absolute security with this project and that is why we do not really have any concerns at this time. The crisis may slow down the marketing somewhat, but we are still confident that our project will be 100% complete by end 2010 as originally planned and despite the global economic downturn we are still receiving enquiries, and those potential customers who have seen the project are still really showing a great interest in our project and in fact, we have 3–4 houses targeted by prospective customers.”
On his greatest challenge:
“When you ask what my greatest challenge is, I have to say that it is giving each and every buyer customer satisfaction. It is sometimes a painstaking process but I believe in attention to detail and making sure that every demand is satisfied to the full extent of my ability. ‘The customer is always right’ is my maxim.”

On his other projects in the future: “Well, actually, I really don’t know what will be next”, laughed Monsieur Cohen. “This project has been about 2 years in the making, so let’s get it finished first then I’ll think about it. A lot of hard work has gone into La Colline, but the way I’m thinking at the moment, I may do two further projects. Who knows?” he continued to chortle, “Anything can happen.”
On his free time:
‘Most definitely golf. I play almost every day and do lots of other sports including swimming and exercising at the gym. I’m not a night bird so I can wake up very early. raham Bibby is a UK born financial advisor who has become well known throughout Asia, and
even the world, for his appearances on television programmes during the present economic crisis. As head of the Richmond Group he has had considerable success in Phuket and today we will delve into his past to try to analyze why. From a very young age Graham was different from other children in that he was more interested in money whilst his contemporaries played more traditional children’s games. In his twenties, his interest in the subject was unabated and he joined one of the world’s largest insurance companies based in the UK providing financial planning advice, and he was a founding member of the UK Financial Planning Association. Thus began his financial and investment career.
Graham Bibby CEO of the Richmond Group CEO of Richmond Asset Management Ltd When, during the early 70’s, the UK faced one of its most severe economic crises, Graham spent a lot of time and effort trying to figure out why, and how to turn disaster into profit. His studies provided a sound basis for investment, even in these dark days. During the 80’s the UK property market boomed and Graham was astute enough to forecast a crash at the end of the decade, together with an end to the concurrent Japanese economic miracle. Such foresight put him in the world’s spotlight. There comes a turning point in every mans life and Graham Bibby was no exception. The aftermath of his foresight was the development of a strong financial model giving good returns based on sound analysis and investor psychology. He decided to move to Hong Kong in 1991 and started Richmond Asset Management; a Hong Kong registered investment advisory company. His established track record as the possessor of dependable foresight and his accumulated experience soon earned him a strong reputation in the old British colony, and as a consequence he was elevated to Chairman of the Technical Analysts Society of Hong Kong from 1996 to 1998. He was also authorized by the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission as an Asset Manager and Advisor.

raham first visited Phuket in 1992 and became a regular visitor thereafter. He noted
that Phuket was growing steadily year upon year but still lacked a basic infrastructure to provide proper facilities and ease of transportation. Nevertheless he judged the island to have enormous potential to grow into the holiday destination it is today, and to be a sought after destination for expatriates, retirees and investors. Accordingly he selected Phuket as a high priority to expand his portfolio. Originally he bought one rai of land at Bang Tao upon which he built his first exclusive residential project “The Himmaphan”. Gradually he increased his land holdings around the Laguna area, which is known today as an area of high-end development, to very large amounts. The Richmond Group became established as a developer of niche properties focusing on creating quality homes catering to exclusive markets and the international investor community. Initially Graham encountered many problems as a result of relying upon an outsourced contactor. This situation made him think of doing the whole process himself and as a result he amassed some of the best architects, designers, and project managers from around the world to form his own team. In so doing the Richmond construction department was established providing all aspects of development including documentation, design, construction and management.

Since its inception in 1993 the Richmond Group has grown to the point where it is at the forefront of development in Phuket. After The Himmaphan came 7 other developments: The Reidence at Bang Tao, The Park in Layan, The Pier at Chalong, The Place in Kamala, The Loch Palm (overlooking the golf course) in Kathu, The Beach Club at Bang Tao, and finally the Richmond Country Club. Graham Bibby has a strong optimism as regards Phuket prosperity and is always prepared to take risks with a highly positive attitude. He is a strong believer in the Phuket property market and is willing to invest heavily into it. “Despite tsunamis, coups and riots, confidence has always been quickly restored and prices are still steadily rising” he stated at a seminar. Maybe he is correct, since the prices at The Residence have risen at 15 – 20 percent per annum in past years. We’ll see how they weather the present storm.

Maybe it’s time to take the hike down to nearly the end of Rat-Uthit Road and seek out the sanctuary of Shakers. You could miss it I suppose, but it’s unlikely. With a façade of bright orange it’s hard to walk past, whichever side of the road you’re on, without remarking to yourself upon its ability to make you look twice. Shakers is a small restaurant and maybe that accounts for the eye-catching décor. If it blended in, you probably would miss it, which would be a shame as it certainly has its charm. Unlike the choice of paint, the food is actually very tasteful with a range of paninis, salads, pastas, pizzas, cold cuts, sandwiches and deserts with a variety of ice cold smoothies or shakes to go with it. If you are feeling homesick, hot beverages are also available.

Sometimes that care involves going on a special diet to cure or at least alleviate the symptoms of their disease and macrobiotics has became one choice for such a diet. Some believe that macrobiotics is only for sick people; we don’t agree, and that’s why we produce this article here.
What is Macrobiotics?
Macrobiotics is a philosophy that promotes well being and longevity. It’s not only the macrobiotic diet that

people have sometimes misunderstood; macrobiotics is, in fact, a way of life as well as eating. The word “macrobiotics” is from the ancient Greek; “macro” meaning large or long and “bios” meaning life. Macrobiotics is not something new. The earliest recorded use of the term is found in the writing of Hippocrates (the father of Western Medicine and he of the famous oath) who introduced the word to describe people who were healthy and long-lived.
Macrobiotics Today
The ethos experienced a revival almost 100 years ago when George Ohsawa (1893 – 1966) was introduced to it. Born into a disadvantaged Samurai family in Japan, Ohsawa-san had an unhappy childhood and was diagnosed with tuberculosis at the age of 18. He discovered Shoku-yo, the Japanese version of macrobiotics as practiced by Sagen Ishizuka, and decided to try it. Ohsawa-san followed the diet of brown rice and vegetables cooked with small amounts of oil and salt, and soon found that his tuberculosis
was clearing up. Very much impressed (and relieved) he continued to stick to that simple diet, joined a health club, and wrote a book on the subject. He became a teacher, took his teachings to Europe and North America, and macrobiotics was born into the modern age. George Ohsawa’s philosophy is a simple formula to live a long and happy life by following a healthy diet consisting of wholesome food properly cooked, combined with an appropriate level of exercise. He also advocated positive thinking in all things together with an affinity for nature.
Macrobiotics in Thailand
Very few people in Thailand knew about macrobiotics until, in 2007, it was officially recognized by The Division of Complimentary and Alternative Medicine and drawn to the attention of the wider pubic.
The Macrobiotic Diet
The macrobiotic diet can be applied to any human being, but not always with the same content or quantity. Dr. Nongpanan Tephabutra, executive director of Sukko Cultural Spa & Wellness in Phuket town advises: “I believe that the macrobiotic diet can be adapted to provide something for everyone. It is variable and adjustable to climate, environment, to body and mind condition, to gender, age and to lifestyle. Patients who are ill may need a restrictive diet but the normal healthy man in street may not, and applying a macrobiotic diet inappropriately might cause imbalance.”
Macrobiotic Diet Philosophy
The aim of the macrobiotic diet is to achieve a balance of the yin and yang elements through natural unprocessed foods, together with a complex of carbohydrates and vegetables which should be organically
grown and eaten fresh. The lifestyle also governs how food should be prepared and it is recommended that cooking pots, utensils etc. be made only from certain materials. Glass, wood, stainless steel, ceramic, and enamel cookware all are considered acceptable but no microwave and electrical appliance should be used. Rice must be cooked in a pressure cooker. Dr. Nongpanan explains: “The best way to cook food is with a natural flame, preferably by burning wood, but a gas stove is acceptable. The heat from a flame cooks slowly and brings out the flavor of the food, while the electrical power from microwaves introduces chaotic energy as it heats. It is said that a macrobiotic diet aims to synchronize eating habits with the cycles of nature. The diet uses the energy giving qualities of foods derived through special cooking procedures to restore and maintain balance.” “Macrobiotics requires us to leave the worries of life behind and to stay focused on preparing the food which is intended to provide strength and nourishment to self and loved ones. Also, it is recommended that foods should be eaten and chewed slowly, in a relaxed manner. ”

All-ceramic or porcelain crowns can help improve both the appearance and function of the teeth. Whereas porcelain veneers generally address only cosmetic concerns and are used to solve only minor problems. However, in choosing to use a porcelain veneer, the tooth surface will be less trimmed as it will be applied to less of the surface of the natural tooth. What does the procedure of having all-ceramic crowns fitted involve? Once you have finished the consultation process and discussed with the dentist all the treatment options. If it is decided you require an all-ceramic crown, your dentist will prepare your tooth for your dental crown by reshaping it under a local anaesthetic to allow the crown to sit comfortably over the top of it. Then the model or impression of your teeth will be taken and given to a technician for fabrication. During this time, your prepared tooth will be covered and protected by a temporary crown. Your all-ceramic crown is then fabricated in the lab and cemented into place at the clinic by the dentist after it has finished. You may know that famous architects from around the world were invited to Phuket and got involved in many projects here. So when you go through the listings what do you see? Minimalism? A trendy design? Sure, but there is no distinguishing feature amongst them when they all follow the same fashion. Those trends may well continue, but the industry is being pushed toward what is called ‘integrated property’, that is, able to cover every aspect of people’s lifestyle. It is an ‘all in one solution’.” “Now, you are not just selling the house anymore. Major developers are leaning towards a ‘mixed-use estate’ where all facilities are available on the doorstep. or the edification those who want something a little different, somewhere that combines seclusion and serenity in a villa style resort hotel right on the beach, Phuketindex.com recently visited The Vijitt Resort Phuket, perhaps the epitome of this type of hotel, to meet the General Manager, Mr James Sullivan-Tailyour. Please tell us briefly about your background. “I rather fell into the Hotel industry by accident but quickly realized it was something I enjoyed, basically looking after people and ensuring their experience was a positive one. After finishing a degree in hotel management, I worked with a variety of organizations in the UK, USA, Africa, the Middle East and throughout Asia, always focusing in the luxury end of the market. I have been fortunate to be able to work with such hotels as the Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels, Six Senses Resorts & Spas and Savoy Middle East.” How did you come to be General Manager of the hotel? “My main experience was in Sales & Marketing but I always took an interest in how the operations teams delivered guest satisfaction. Although it has always been a key part of the sales and marketing process, looking at the hotel operation from a customer perspective is considered ever more important today, and certainly that is our focus at The Vijitt Resort.” What is the most challenging part about being GM?

“Constantly keeping up with the changing environment. To get to the top and to stay on top requires constant review of our own and others concepts, particularly since the market’s and customer’s expectations change much more quickly than they used to. However, it is this aspect that I enjoy the most about the job.” What’s your number one working principal? “Focusing the whole team on the concept that they are part of the customer experiences in everything they do - it all comes down to the guest and what he or she wants, not what we want. From a staff perspective fairness is important, as is leading from the front. We want our staff to enjoy working here and to feel that they are part of a family.” Have you ever been afraid to open a new hotel? “I have always enjoyed a challenge. I opened a hotel in Northern Uganda where the completion date was delayed several times as a result of attacks from anti-government factions. However, after finally opening the resort, and in the process achieving Uganda’s ‘Investors of the Year’ award, it all seemed worthwhile. Back then I was single, now with the responsibility of a family I am not sure that I would be up for that level of challenge. In contrast, Phuket is great place to work.”

Entering this Belgian owned 4-story apartment building you will be surprised at the ambience. There are two types of accommodation available: one or two bedroom suites, each furnished

well with all facilities to make your stay comfortable and content. The furniture is of a high quality and the rooms are well equipped with European and American fixtures, a fully outfitted modern kitchen, a 42 inch plasma TV including DVD player, free internet access, a huge balcony and amenities that are replaced every day as part of the service. There is no sea view unfortunately, but there is a beautiful roof top swimming pool to sit around and enjoy the sun, and it is only 5-10 minutes walk to the beach and all that that has to offer. The apartments are tastefully decorated with canvas paintings hanging on the walls and ‘objects d’art’ stylishly laid out. The idea is to make you feel like these rooms are your home, whether your stay is long or short. If you take a

Most are by a popular local artist, Khun Suthirak Chantragun, and contact details are available. If this work is not to your taste, fear not, there are many other art shops and galleries in the local area, one of which will probably catch your eye.

Whether your stay is for the entire length of your visit to Patong or just a short getaway (maybe with that special someone?) At the end of the day enjoy your dinner and get ready for phase two of the ‘Patong Experience’ – the night-time assault upon your senses. A short walk from BYD takes you to Bangla Road which, after 6pm becomes a pedestrian street. As the sun sets, the street wakes up, but slowly, as it only really gets going after 10pm. Hammer nails into blocks of wood, play ‘Four Wins”, pull blocks out of makeshift mini skyscrapers and put your intellect to the test in many other demanding ways. If Bangla becomes passé, there is always the beachfront or the Royal Paradise complex as an alternative, not to mention the discothèques and bars scattered all over Patong. However you choose to kill off a few brain cells, don’t forget your way back to your home away from home at BYD Lofts.

he new Phunaka Golf Academy is a high quality driving range and 9-hole golf course designed to benefit all levels of player. It is also the first golf centre in the south of Phuket Island. Designed by John Morrow after examples set by Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus, the Phunaka is not open yet but already promises to be a first class short course and driving range. The par 3 course itself will be floodlit, allowing play after office hours and well into darkness. The driving range is perhaps the Piece de Resistance in

that it is unlike any other range hitherto available in the south. The business end is 170 yards wide with 56 driving bays, and the driving area 320 yards long. It’s not the biggest in the world therefore, but more than enough to brush up on those long drives and shorter iron shots. Besides, what it lacks is size is more than compensated for in layout and quality, and it is, undoubtedly, better than shooting into a net. Here you can see your ball land on the ground in a simulated actual course. The landing area is unobstructed by yardage markers but instead is laid
out just like a real course with proper greens and flag pins at 75, 125, 150,200, 225,250 and 330 yards. Thus it is possible to simulate actual play ranging from driving, through approach shots, to pitching on with a range of clubs by targeting, one by one obviously, a realistic green. In a way, it is like playing a round without the walk. Each bay will be fitted with an artificial grass mat eradicating slippage and giving a firm stance for each shot. Technology plays its part and you can elect to place the ball yourself or have one of those awfully clever automatic ball droppers do it for you. Clearly you would not play a proper round of golf with a substandard ball (at least, we hope you wouldn’t!), so at Phunaka all of the range balls will be of a high quality so that a realistic trajectory in height, distance

and hook or slice (sorry, fade or draw) is achieved. Often forgotten but of vital importance is a practice area to hone up the short game. How often has a beautiful long drive been utterly wasted by a chip fluffed into the bunker? At Phunaka there will be a dedicated area with real grass to get those chips and subsequent putts absolutely right. Finally, there will of course be a shop with quality equipment, and a maintenance service for those who need it. These will be open from 7am until 10pm which should cover most people’s needs. This is no Augusta or St Andrews, but is, or will be, a quality facility for players of all ability to practice, have lessons if desired, sharpen their skills, and most importantly, enjoy. The Pride of Phuket “Just because you start from zero, it does not mean you cannot get to ten” should perhaps be the motto of Pamuke Achariyachai, the founder and president of the Kata group of hotels and resorts. Born in Nakorn Sri Thammarat, Khun Pamuke first arrived in Phuket 29 years ago with no experience whatsoever in the hotel business, but starting with only 9 small cottages, he now has over 1,000 hotel rooms on his portfolio. This is his story.
On his background Khun Pamuke Achachariyachai, like the former Governor of Phuket, grew up in an agricultural family and moved to the capital for his college education where he got a degree in Marketing. He then worked in a bank for a while before deciding to go to Philippines for his

bachelor’s and master’s degree.
On his beginning in the hotel business “I first came to Phuket 29 years ago in 1980 just looking for an opportunity of some kind, but with no specific plan in mind when I came across the owner of 9 small beachfront bungalows on Kata beach who wanted to give up his business. It seemed like a golden opportunity to me so I took it over from him with a rental agreement and built it up from there.” “I had no idea what I was doing at that time, but that did not mean that I did not have vision and could not catch on fast. I worked hard, fixing up the dilapidated bungalows and making a few changes for the better, but these
buildings were little more than woven lattice work made from bamboo and were in reality little more than a place to sleep with a common bathroom for guests to share.” “Fortunately for me my catchphrase of ‘Nothing between you and the Sea’ seemed to be just exactly what backpackers wanted. All visitors seemed to leave with a good impression and upon their return to their homelands gave us good write ups in magazines and books. This helped a lot to put us ‘on the map’ and the power of word of mouth is still the best advertisement in any business. Our bungalows started at 40 Baht per night but steadily increased to 550 Baht per night.”
The Kata Group was formed 8-9 years later “Later, I was able to buy the land and, using a loan I had secured, decided to replace the bungalows with my first building project, the ‘Kata Beach Resort’. This was followed by the ‘Karon Inn’, later renamed as the ‘Orchid Resort and Spa’, and continued with the ‘Karon Beach Resort’ which rose like a phoenix from the former Kata Inn 85. Most recently we completed the
Kandaburi Resort and Spa on Koh Samui, thus progressing from the bungalows - a tiny 9 room concern - to a company offering over 1,000 hotel rooms in total. We have not stopped expanding but because of the present economic downturn we have had to put the brakes on our ambitions for the time being.”
Success does not come by chance “When I took over the bungalows I worked extremely hard to build up the business. I ate and slept there, learned new crafts as I went along, and took care of almost everything myself with only 4 -5 staff. It was a challenge, but I built up personal relationships with the guests and treated them as friends, a philosophy I hold to this day.” “We have been in this business for almost 30 years now and I believed at the start and continue to believe that human resource is the key to success. We are here to provide a service and it is people who give a service to people. Understand that concept and success will follow.” “In the hospitality business, it is not just you, me, the guests and the hotel; other business partners such as

travel agents are also Posh Life involved and sometimes there is a failure of communication. When that happens, it is the response of our staff that is critical in dealing with the situation. We do not seek out someone to blame. We actively take steps to resolve the situation to the customer’s satisfaction. Public relations is everything and a good impression is vital.” “Actually, hospitality is not a mystery. All you need to do is put your heart into it, get close to your guests, anticipate their needs with care and attention to detail, and to act positively and decisively when a problem crops up. To this end we have taught him to be respectful and even a little humble when dealing with people, including my staff. We always speak southern dialect, as I believe this will remind him of his roots and make him love his homeland just as I do.” You and your son have a large age gap, how do you cope with the difference?

“The world has changed. Today’s teenagers have a greater self-confidence than when I was young and parents need to understand that, especially when there is such a large age difference. In raising him we gave him freedom to learn the lessons of life himself. My wife and I just watch from a distance, only intervening when absolutely necessary and in so doing we do not notice the gap. We encourage free expression thus getting to know one another better and building mutual respect. We never push him, but have engendered an atmosphere where he will listen to our perspective.” How do you spend your free time and stay fit? “Up until recent years I have worked very hard to get where I am today. Now that things are running more smoothly, I have time for myself and it is travel that I enjoy most. I am also very lucky in that my wife takes good care of me, especially with regard to our diet.

We feel this is important as it is our aim to live as long as we can in to be with our son.” Khun Pamuke’s life is not restricted to his business as an hotelier. He is also a highly respected member of Phuket society, being a former chairman of the Phuket Chamber of Commerce and a former President of the Phuket Tourism Association. For his work in helping many Finnish nationals after the tsunami disaster in December 2004, he was appointed an Honorary Consul-General of Finland in Phuket by the Finnish Ambassador to Thailand. In addition, he is acutely aware of his social obligations and the need to give back to society. “As a rule of thumb, I believe that people should return to life what they have been lucky enough to take out. It does not need to be money, just to be a good person, to live your life honestly and decently without causing trouble is often enough. I am constantly reminding my staff of this way of thinking and hope that it will help all people to lead a more fulfilling and rewarding life.” One way that Khun Pamuke puts into practice what he preaches is to apportion part of his wealth in the form of grants to students, especially the children of his staff. However, “I do not give them easily. I talk to the parents
and make clear what I expect in return, namely, a good life lived on the principles I espouse.” “I know that there are financial inequalities in life but every one of us is a human being. Whether you have billions or just hundreds, we all have to eat and deserve respect. I am very proud to be in a position to help, and find it disappointing that many rich people do not. Sunshine Village A Home for Underprivileged Children
T
he Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation was established after the tsunami disaster hit Asia in 2004 to provide a home for tsunami orphans. Now however, it is a refuge for all homeless children as well as for those from a dysfunctional family or victims of abuse. Just after the disaster, the Lions Club Phuket Andaman Sea Branch got a donation from the global Lions Club and other organizations around the world. As well as providing immediate help to victims, serious thought was given as how to provide long-term sustainable help and finally the club committee decided co-operate with the Child-Watch Phuket Association to build a children’s village for the orphans and other children in need. Rather like a snowball rolling down a hill, other charitable organizations became involved, most notably, but by no means limited to, the French Red Cross, the Lions Club Phuket Pearl and the government of Luxemburg. The French Red Cross took

Phuket Sunshine Village is a non profit making organization which is dedicated solely to helping these youngsters to grow up to be strong young men and women. It opened on 29th June 2007 and although sufficiently funded at the moment, in the long term more money will be required through child sponsorship and donations. The village itself consists of six double villas each designed to accommodate a ‘family’ consisting of 8 to 10 children of various ages. Each villa has its ‘mother’ and in this way a traditional Thai family atmosphere is created with the children being cared for 24 hours a day. As well as receiving a basic education, the children are encouraged and given the opportunity to participate in other activities. Courses, for example in English and Chinese, are sometimes provided by ChildWatch which specializes in such spheres. Discipline, self reliance, moral practices and social behavior are engendered throughout.
