elcome to the summer season issue of Phuketindex.com magazine, a time when Phuket still has abundance of delightful sunny weather, but with the addition of cooling afternoon showers which often setup spectacular sunsets. In this issue of our magazine, which covers the very best of the island’s social, travel and local scenes; we talk to three young and successful Phuketians who have all witnessed many changes in the island in the time they have grown up here. First we speak to Chanishnant Tephabutra, a popular face on Phuket’s social circuit, who tells us how she manages to juggle her personal and business life since becoming a wife and mother. We also speak to Samornpun Somnam, Executive Director The KEE Resort & Spa, Patong, a woman, who surprisingly loves peace and quiet, but has seen what was originally her home, transformed into the center of Phuket’s main tourist area Patong. And then there’s Mongkontep Khoo-aroon, who believes that it’s far time Phuket had something different from the norm to offer it’s tourists, and that his family’s Crystal Wild Resort is just what they are looking for.
And on more of a serious note, we were also recently lucky enough to get to meet the man, who along with his team, are responsible for researching and assessing the abundance of the marine and coastal flora and fauna along a 585 km stretch of the Andaman Sea, and ensuring the island’s nature, especially within the sea, remain intact.

Work is set to begin this October on a new facility dedicated to the protection and conservation of Phuket’s endangered sea turtles, which face multiple threats from commercial fishing, consuming or becoming entangled in ocean litter and being hit by speedboats. Due to open during Songkran 2015, the Marine Turtle Shelter & Education Center will be located at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa on land donated by the resort and its owing company the Minor Corporation for the project. It will be the first resort in Asia-Pacific to have such a facility situated on-site. Resort guests and the general public will be able to see and interact with the turtles including being able to feed them, clean their tank and learn about their lifecycle, as well as help clean the beach and plant coral in the area. Construction of the facility will begin as soon as the water system plans and Green Energy power system are completed, and the design and concept are finalized. At the same time, she was awarded a scholarship by the Ministry of Culture (MOC) to put on an exhibition in Bangkok. Nok is currently an assistant arts teacher at the island’s private Phuket International Academy Day School, and also provides one-on-one private lessons, and holds various kid and adult group art classes. Chef Alessandro Frau and the restaurants new wine sommelier Matteo picked the wines, and Chef Ales was left with the task of creating 5 special dishes that paired with the wines, the ingredients of which were specially imported just for this event.

Every two or three months we host a wine dinner but we change the topic, last time we done a Super Tuscan dinner, something which has never been done in Phuket, and a Magnum Dinner has also never been done in Phuket. We really try to do something different every time. “Tonight was very special because we had such a good selection of wines from Italy, the first wine was Livio Felluga Terre Alte, the second wine Poggio Antico Brunello di Montalcino Riserva, the third La Brancaia Il Blu IGT 2006, the fourth, which was the highlight of the evening, was Fontodi Flaccianello della Pieve, and the last wine was Allegrini Amarone della Valpolicella, which pairs very well with cheeses. “The menu was designed to match the wines, and the ingredients came from many areas of Italy, and were specially imported just for this event. “I think that everybody has enjoyed themselves tonight, and I’m now looking forward to the next challenge for the next wine dinner.”

Chanishnant Tephabutra Mother, Wife and Successful Businesswoman

25 year old Phuketian Chanishnant Tephabutra (Khun Mook) started out her career working for Lugthansa Airways in Bangkok after having successfully completed an Airline Business program at Samui Island’s International School of Tourism, and mastering in Hospitality and Tourism Management (International Program) at Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus, a course which took her to study and work in Hungary for a one year period. However, having recently got married, and having a child, Khun Mook now works alongside her husband, Khun Ritt, at the island’s graphic design company World Lennium, as well as being Executive Director at TConnext. Phuketindex.com was recently privileged to be able to interview Khun Mook about her current work, personal and social life, and a little bit more.
Can you tell us about your current work? World Lennium are a local graphic design and printing company who are lucky enough to have a number of the island’s mid to high end businesses as customers, and we take care of all their printing needs. However, we are now looking to expand our line of services to include online marketing of local and international products, as well as website development.

Social Life Social Talk With regards to TConnext, our Company has noticed there are sometimes issues when it comes to the island’s tourist booking services such as unclear phone conversations between tour agents and tour operator staff, and that those phone transactions are sometimes time consuming & not cost efficient. TConnext is simply a computer software platform that is designed for tour owners and tour agents to use to make bookings for tickets etc fast, easily & efficiently and without any hassles or complications. One advantage of Tconnext for tour agents is that they won’t need to make any phone calls or do any faxing to make a booking, whilst operators will be able to receive notifications, review & approve/reject the booking via the platform. We firmly believe that this platform will be of benefit to many tourist businesses, that it will greatly improve tourist’s tour experiences, thus improving Phuket’s overall tourist image. We hope to be launching this platform in the very near future.
In my teenage years I did not get to socialize so much, but more recently I have got to meet a lot of successful people who are a lot older than me, and I know that I have been lucky to be around them and learn from them. As I get to meet some many people I know that I have to look after myself and my image all the time, I also have to try to improve my personality to make myself approachable to the people I meet. When I was at university and was around people involved in the airline business I got to see how they conducted themselves in situations like I get into now, so I am privileged that I learnt from them and know how to conduct myself in Phuket’s social scene.
Please could you share with us the everyday contents of your handbag? Yes, sure I’m happy to do that for you. Of course I have my Smartphone, which I’m sure the majority of people have nowadays, this is my personal phone, but I also have a second phone which I use for business. I have some everyday make up, my car keys, my purse, sunglasses, and the one thing that I cannot be without is my note book. This goes wherever I go, I make notes from all the meetings I have to attend, and being a mother and a part-time housewife, I also use it to make notes on what I need to buy for the house and for my baby.
How do you see your own personality? I would say that I’m very self developed, and if I want to do something I will really push myself to do it. If I meet people who have made successes of their lives through their own means, I will try to adapt myself so that I can also be successful in my own right too. Khun Ritt’s, my husband’s family, has always tried very hard to teach us the right way to live, work and stay peaceful in our lives and I hope we are doing them justice in what they have and are trying to teach us. www.phuketindex.com

Now you are a mother, wife and businesswoman, do you find it difficult to manage all 3, and how do you manage to do it? It’s quite a hard time for me right now, my son Narit is only one and a half years old, and I believe that every mum should stay with their child at least until they’re 3 years old, but sadly it’s difficult for me to do that. I do realise there are a lot of people in the same situation as me, but there are those who do not have family and do not have someone who can take care of their child for them. Luckily I have my mum, and she is such a great help to me, she always reassures me that I’m doing the right thing by going to work, and she always tells me to continue doing what I’m doing as my son will learn from me. But it’s very important that I make sure I have time in the evenings to spend with Narit, every child needs some time in the day with their parents, it would not be fair on them if they never got to see their mum and dad during the day.
Can you tell us about your travel style? Actually I enjoy travelling anywhere, and I don’t mind travelling alone. I can comfortably travel as a backpacker, in fact I love travelling like that. I love the planning, the adventure and the excitement that travelling like that involves. My work now does involve travel so I have got very used to travelling alone, but then I’m also lucky that I’m able to travel with my family as well.
Do you have one particular travel story you can share with us? Yes there is one particular story that stays in my mind. I was in my relationship with Khun Ritt when I was studying and working in Hungary, and at that time I got to feel quite lonely. Khun Ritt actually knew what hotel I worked in but didn’t know I worked on reception. He booked to stay at the hotel as a surprise for me, but as I worked on reception I saw that he had made the booking and therefore it wasn’t going to be a surprise to just see him walk into the hotel. However, on the day he arrived he also told me that we were going to travel to Europe to meet with his mum and brother who were staying there, so there was still a surprise element to him coming which was fantastic.

Can you tell us about your beauty regime? Actually I have to admit that I’m totally unprofessional at this in everyday life. very reliable source, who is regularly in contact with a large number of travel agents, has recently told Phuketindex.com magazine that according to the agents, Phuket is still one of the world’s most popular choices for travelers seeking a great beach destination. We believe this fact can be backed up by recent news from TripAdvisor that four of Phuket’s beaches were rated amongst the top 25 Beaches in Asia in its recent Travellers’ Choice TM awards for Beaches, winners of which are determined based on the quality and quantity of traveler reviews and ratings on TripAdvisor gathered over a 12-month period. Whilst we acknowledge that some of Phuket’s main beaches may not be to everybody’s liking, with a quick search of Google we’re certain there really is a certain kind of beach for every type of beach lover. In the following pages, we give you a guide to some of the popular and hidden beaches that are here for you to enjoy.

Sai Kaew Beach
Nai Yang Beach
Sai Kaew Beach is the northern most beach on Phuket, and is located close to the Sarasin and Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Si Sunthon bridges. This is a long white powdery beach dotted with pine groves along the shore and is part of the Sirinat National Park. The beach is not ideal for swimming.
Dotted with shady Casurinas pines and bordered by extensive mangrove forests, this beach offers tranquil surroundings and a perfect setting for picnics, sunbathing and swimming. A coral reef offshore offers superb snorkeling and diving opportunities, with the chance to catch a rare glimpse of several marine species, including the endangered sea turtle.

Layan Beach is one of the least developed beaches on the island and one of the most beautiful. Soft white powder sand leads up to mostly native vegetation for most of the beach front. Because of the shallow water the beach is not really ideal for swimming, but it’s the perfect place for a walk.

South West
Karon Beach is a wide white sandy beach four kilometers in length, offering unlimited opportunities for sunbathing and swimming. In the monsoon season it can be dangerous for swimming because of the currents so watch out for the red flags which are put up when it is too dangerous.
Kamala Beach is more than 2km long, quite wide and the water is shallow for a long way out. Framing the whole scenery is the rainforest mountains of Phuket coming down all the way to the waterfront on both sides. During the short wet season don’t be surprised to find the locals and the occasional tourist trying to do a bit of surfing here.

Nai Harn Beach
Nai Harn is not Phuket’s longest beach, but it borders the most gorgeous lagoon on the island. The beach is generally less crowded than other spots on the southern part of the island. A wide variety of water sports can be enjoyed, but swimmers should be alert for the red flag which warns of dangerous currents during the monsoon season from May to October.

Yanui Beach is one of the smallest beaches on the island, but a quite pretty one with smooth white sand. A rock formation divides it into two sections, providing a good place for snorkeling, although the sea here is not perfect for swimming because of some rocks in the water.

Cape Panwa Beach
Cape Panwa Beach stretches along the west coast of Cape Panwa. Although nothing extraordinary and just a small strip of sand, the northern end of the beach has great views of Koh Lon and other islands. It’s the perfect location for a picnic, but as the waters here are shallow it’s not ideal for swimming.
Ao Yon Beach
Nestled deep into Ca pe Panwa is Ao Yon Beach, the best beach on the so uthern side of Phuk et. It is a beautiful stretch of sa nd and a good bathi ng beach. It is usually very qu iet and a real getaw ay.

here’s possibly nowhere more beautiful for romance than Phuket. With its beautiful lush mountain scenery, a vibrant town center rich in culture, and numerous beaches, it’s hardly surprising that this paradise island is the chosen destination for growing numbers of wedding couples and honeymooners from around the world. However, it’s not only newlyweds that can enjoy some private romance time here in the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’; there are some romantic locations that are to be enjoyed by all, whether they be new lovers, engaged couples, or just good old fashioned romantics.
Phuket plays host to some of Thailand’s busiest beaches but also to some of the quietest. Even in high season, in certain locations around the island, there are deserted beaches to be discovered. Mai Khao Beach is the longest in Phuket. The beach starts at Sirinath National Park which, in itself, provides plenty of opportunities for privacy. The beach stretches all the way to the very north of Phuket and although there are a handful of resorts dotted along Mai Khao, you will have most of the eleven kilometres of the beach to yourselves. There are also a number of intimate and romantic beaches which are off the beaten track . The names, such as Paradise Beach, Ao Yon and Banana Beach, tend to be as memorable as the places themselves!

Windmill Viewpoint
Although Promthep Cape is probably the most famous viewpoint in Phuket, and often cited as a must-visit location because of its spectacular sunsets, the usual over crowdedness doesn’t really set a romantic atmosphere. So why not head to a quieter nearby point where the view is just as magnificent –Windmill viewpoint located in Rawai district, between Nai Harn beach and Laem Promthep. As only a few cars can park here, you can enjoy a more private experience, so pack a picnic, camera and watch the stunning sunset vista together.
Soi Romanee
Soi Romanee, which actually means pleasure or happiness in Thai, is actually known to locals as the romantic road due to the fact it was once a red light district for the many Chinese labourers who came to work the island’s tin mines. Today, the houses in colonial and Sino-Portuguese style are beautifully colored since they have been renovated while the left side of the lane remains lined with original Chinese shophouses, and without a doubt, the style and architecture had been preserved exactly the way they were 100 years ago. The look of these buildings is further enhanced at night when many of the street’s shophouses are bathed in an ever-changing array of LED lights. At present, this area is filled with souvenir shops, restaurants, places to enjoy drinks and galleries. It is known as one of the most romantic lanes on the island and it’s not unusual to see young locals who are getting married posing for their pre-wedding photos in Soi Romanee.
Rang Hill
Among the most well visited of the island’s stunning vistas is Rang Hill, found North West of Phuket City centre. As you make the ascent to the top of Rang Hill you will pass both a Chinese temple and a Thai temple. The Thai temple, Wat Khao Rang is home to a very large golden Buddha statue. Once you reach the top of Rang Hill you will find a very spacious area with plenty of seats. The site is far away from the noise of civilisation and on clear days you are able to look out onto some of the smaller islands of Phuket’s coast. By night, the quality of the view from Rang Hill does not fade away even though the sun is no longer illuminating the view. The views overlooking the Andaman make way and are replaced by the bright lights of the city below and for many people, a night on Rang Hill is one of the most beautiful and romantic places to be.

panish born Oriol Montal, together with his wife Ann and daughter Emma, only arrived in Phuket in early March 2014, the purpose for his and his family’s move, was due to him taking over the position of General Manager of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, a stunning beachfront location on the island’s beautiful Mai Khao Beach. Oriol was previously based in a completely different location than that which he now gets to enjoy, that being Osaka, Japan’s third largest city by population after Tokyo, where he was General Manager of the groups Ritz Carlton from 2011. Oriol brings with him a wealth of experience in the hotel industry, 20 years worth in fact, and the last 18 of those working for Marriott International in different parts of the world such as Dubai, Barcelona, Lisbon and Tenerife to name a few. It’s not only a wealth of experience that Oriol brings with him; it’s also a wealth of languages, as in addition to speaking his native Spanish, he also speaks fluent Catalan, French, English and Portuguese. Speaking about Oriol’s latest appointment, Philip Bryson, JW Marriott’s Area Vice President, SE Asia, Australia and South Pacific said “Oriol has proven his leadership abilities time and time again, and we look forward to further success for him in this new role at one of our flagship JW Marriott resorts in Asia.” Oriol kindly answered some questions from Phuketindex.com about his new role as GM of JW Marriott, and about the resort itself.

Travel Life Travel Talk How would you describe your management style? My ultimate goal is to always try to be more of a leader than a manager. It is my opinion that a leader empowers his associates, but a manager controls them. A leader thinks long term, whereas a manager thinks short term. A leader is proactive, a manager is reactive. A leader gives credit, a manager takes the credit. I think that the key is all about relations, that is why I like being present, listening, walking around.
What will be your main priorities for the next 12 months? My first priority is to make sure I understand my team; I want to get to know them and to make sure they all enjoy their daily work. If I’m able to connect with them then 50 % of my task will be achieved. My second biggest priority will be to improve the experiences our guests have when staying at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa.
How do you define success in your job? I think the best way to measure success is through positive indicators. In Marriott we have different measures to understand if we are going in the right direction for every single aspect. Success is
finding the right balance in order to improve, at the same time satisfying your associates, your customers and the owners of the hotel.
What is the favourite aspect of your job & why? As the Marriott motto says, “People first!” Seeing people enjoying life around me, seeing our associates growing within the organization, coming to work every day knowing that I will have fun, what better aspect of a job can there be!
What motivates you in your job? I’m somebody who always strives for constant improvements, and what motivates me more than anything is exactly that, seeing that we’re going in the right direction.
What is your hotel’s unique selling point? I think this resort is very lucky as there isn’t only one selling point, there are many; the quality of the associates, the location in the middle of a natural park, large offerings of activities, and great diversity on restaurant offerings.
Which travellers do you mainly target? One of the biggest advantages for our resort is our facilities being so diverse and large. I also believe

we have space for every single segment of customer, from couples looking for peace, to families wanting more activities, through to MICE.
What are the main challenges you are currently facing and how are you dealing with these? In any business you have so many challenges, but the most important thing in life is how you take those challenges. I think the way to do it is with optimism, and to always see them more as an opportunity to get better. Yes, there are new hotels opening, still some challenges on the economy of some key markets for Phuket, but at the same time so many new opportunities like the opening of the new airport terminal next year, and new markets starting to come to Phuket.
How are occupancy levels and forward bookings? We are positive with the business for the coming few months, booking numbers look promising.
What do you want to have accomplished in the next ten years? To strengthen the position of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort and Spa as the best employer on the island, the best company in Thailand from a corporate responsibility point of view, and the best provider of luxury experiences in Phuket
How do you balance business life and private life? I believe the only way for a person to achieve success is through having a right balance. During the weekends I enjoy my time with my family and doing some sports such as tennis and going to the gym. In addition, now I’m in Phuket, I’m looking forward to doing something I truly enjoy again, diving! Lastly, in this paradise‌ I cannot wait to utilize to the maximum the opportunity of spending time outside just enjoying the Andaman Sea!

Social competence not only involves the ability to cooperate with peers; it also includes such things as the ability to show empathy, express feelings, and share generously. How to Build Your Young Child’s Social Skills Some children behave just the way you want them to, some just the opposite. As a parent, you should understand that children are like a piece of clean white cloth. It is your job and responsibility to give it some color. Or to put in another way, children are innocent and you are the ones who are responsible to shape, teach and guide them to become good people in the future. You should give them proper guidance when they are still young. The following are some tips on how to introduce social skills, particularly good manners and behaviors among children.

Give your child some light chores to do. Children can already understand some instructions, as early as when they are 2 or 3 years of age. Giving them a little work to do will make him or her learn to obey and follow instructions. Remember, this is not to make your child feel tired or sad. It is good for your child when he or she starts learning to know that helping out is a good thing to do. As an example, ask your child to help tidy up the mess he or she made while playing.

Reward your child with positive praises. Tell them that they have done a good job afterward. Say words like good, or brilliant after they have done what you ask them to do. This will make them feel appreciated and acknowledged after they have done something good. Always try to avoid negative words. If your child fails to do something, tell him or her that it is okay and that he can do better next time. Always remember to avoid negative remarks. Encourage good habits of saying thank you and sorry. Always say “Please” and “Thank You” where necessary. Another phrase is “I’m sorry” when he or she does something wrong. If you always practice this yourself, your child will imitate these habits. They will learn to copy what we do to them and what we do among ourselves as adults. Establishing a connection between their apology and the reason they are apologizing also helps build empathy, which is vital in good communication and interaction. You can do this by bringing their attention to the subject of their apology. You can tell them: “Do you see how sad you made your friend feel?” instead of just “Say sorry.” Talk to them and get them to talk back. Get them to say what they feel about anything. Have them confide their feelings about anything, by observing their reactions to the world around them and letting them know that you are open to their thoughts and feelings on any subject. They will learn to express themselves better. This practice is very good because you do not want them to keep their frustrations to themselves. This way, as an adult, you can learn to understand and handle your children better. Get your child to play with other children. This is a way to break their anxiety and nervousness around people. Start with small groups. Your child will also learn to share things among friends. He/she will learn to understand that sharing is a good value and children can only understand and appreciate it with other friends.

Children’s Emotional Development Emotional development is a complex task that begins in infancy and continues into adulthood. The first emotions that can be recognised in babies include joy, anger, sadness and fear. Later, as children begin to develop a sense of self, more complex emotions like shyness, surprise, elation, embarrassment, shame, guilt, pride and empathy emerge. Primary school children are still learning to identify emotions, to understand why they happen and how to manage them appropriately. As children develop, the things that provoke their emotional responses change, as do the strategies they use to manage them. Very young children’s emotions are mainly made up of physical reactions (eg heart racing, butterflies in stomach) and behaviours. As they grow, children develop the ability to recognise feelings. Their emotions are also increasingly influenced by their thinking. They become more aware of their own feelings and better able to recognise and understand other people’s. Thus, an emotional reaction of a 10-year-old is likely to be far more complex than that of a threeyear-old. The experience of emotion includes several components: • • • •
Physical responses (eg heart rate, breathing, hormone levels) Feelings that children recognise and learn to name Thoughts and judgments associated with feelings Action signals (eg a desire to approach, escape or fight)

Tune into children’s feelings and emotions Some emotions are easily identified, while others are less obvious. Tuning into children’s emotions involves looking at their body language, listening to what they are saying and how they are saying it, and observing their behaviour. This allows you to respond more effectively to children’s needs and to offer more specific guidance to help children manage their emotions.
Help children recognise and understand emotions Taking opportunities to talk with children and teach them about emotions helps children to become more aware of their own emotions as well as those of others. Encouraging children to feel comfortable with their emotions and providing them with practice in talking about their feelings helps children to further develop ways to manage their emotions.
Set limits on inappropriate expression of emotions It is very important for children to understand that it is okay to have a range of emotions and feelings, but that there are limits to the ways these should be expressed. While acknowledging children’s emotions, it is therefore very important to set limits on aggressive, unsafe or inappropriate behaviours.
Be a role model Children learn about emotions and how to express them appropriately by watching others – especially parents, carers and school staff. Showing children the ways you understand and manage emotions helps children learn from your example. This includes examples of saying: “Sorry, I lost my temper” (because no parent is perfect!) and then showing how you might make amends.

Por Tor Festival Releasing the Spirits of the Deceased
T
he Por Tor Festival, also known as the Hungry Ghost Festival, is one of the most religious and culturally rich festivals celebrated in Phuket, and is a testament to the island’s long standing Chinese Hokkien history which began when the first immigrants from Malaysia and China came to work in Phuket’s tin mines. It is believed by most Chinese people that during the Por Tor Festival the gates of hell are opened and the spirits of their deceased family are released for a month by the goddess Gwan Yin, during their release the spirits come to visit their past homes and relatives.

The Por Tor Kong Shrine in Bang Niew and the Talad Sod Satarana in Ranong Road are the main venues for the Por Tor Festival celebrations, and generations upon generations of Phuket’s Chinese families have flocked to these two shrines each and every year to carry out what can only be described as slightly amusing rituals in celebration of the festival. However, in recent years the Por Tor Festival has also grown into another of Phuket’s main tourist attractions, and has become famous around the world.

The Por Tor Festival falls on the first day of the seventh lunar month in the Chinese calendar, and on this day participants in the festival offer food, flowers and candles to the spirits of their ancestors and to worship Por Tor, the god of hell. In the afternoon families will prepare makeshift altars at their homes in readiness for worshiping their ancestors, and every household will set the table with a number of dishes usually consisting of fish, pork, fowl, vegetable, fruits and sweetmeats. These dishes are placed in the middle of the table, along with a plate of rice for each of the departed relatives. Incense sticks are speared into each serving of rice and lit, and then all the family members sit to the side or go to another room, the spirits are eating their meals. When the incense is fully burned it indicates the spirits have finished dining, allowing the living relatives to come to the table to start their meals. When their meals are finished, the families will then burn gold & silver paper, or hell money, specifically made to be burnt as offerings to the deceased as it’s believed that the spirits need money in the afterlife.
And no Por Tor Festival would be complete without the red ceremonial cakes in the shape of turtles (Ang Koo), of various sizes made from flour and sugar. These turtles are presented as offerings at the Chinese temples
along with large quantities of savoury food, carved fruit and drinks. For many Chinese, the turtle represents strength and is a symbol of longevity. In addition, red usually means good luck. Therefore offering a red turtle is not only a good thing for their ancestors, it also means that they are extending their own life too in a sense.

amornpun Somnam, known more simply as Khun Tarn, was born, raised and educated at secondary school level right here on the island of Phuket. After leaving high school, Khun Tarn enrolled at Mahidol University International College in Bangkok where she studied Hotel Management; she came out of there with a Bachelor’s Degree in the subject. The final stage of her education took her to the top-ranking Swiss hospitality & tourism management school Les Roches, where she took, and passed, a one year Master’s degree in Hospitality Management. Today, Khun Tarn is Executive Director at one of Patong’s most popular and unique accommodations, The KEE Resort & Spa, where she mainly focuses on the Sales & Marketing side, and the day-to-day operation of the business.
Khun Tarn recently took some time out to speak to Phuketindex.com about The KEE Resort & Spa, and also tell us about the changes she has seen in her birth place since the inception of its tourism industry.
Prior to Phuket’s tourism industry taking off what did your family do? My ancestors were originally involved in the island’s tin mining industry, but when that came to an end the family became merchants selling goods such as fruits, snacks and local foods. More recently, my family took over a 3 star resort here in Patong called Patong Villa, this resort actually stood where the KEE Resort & Spa & KEE Plaza stands today. We ran this property for about 7 years before deciding to demolish it and build the new resort.

Local Life Local Talk When and why did you decide to open The KEE Resort & Spa and KEE Plaza? As I mentioned before, we ran Patong Villa for about 7 years and decided to pull it down to build The KEE. This decision was made because Phuket’s tourism industry was growing so rapidly, and we realized that to keep up with our competitors it was necessary to expand our property. However, it was not only the old resort that went; it was also our home, as this was located directly behind Patong Villa.
In addition, the whole plot of land where The KEE Resort & Spa & Plaza stands belongs to my grandmother; it is her wish to have all the family members working together as a team, and it was really her decision that we expand the property so that could happen. To acknowledge our appreciation for what she has done for us, the resort is named after her, and our logo is her thumb print.
Tell us some of the highlights of your property We have a very strong concept to the hotel which is ‘Modern Phuket’. As we’re a local family we wanted to keep the concept of how Phuket is in the hotel. However, we also wanted it to be modern and chic, so we have combined those two concepts together to give us what we have today. We also have one very unique selling point to our resort, KEE Sky Lounge. We are the only resort in this area that has a sky lounge this high, and it is the only location that provides 360 degree views of Patong City. Furthermore, we have a strategic location; we are located right in the heart of Patong, and we are the only resort that has direct access to Bangla Road, and we are only 5 minutes walk to Patong Beach.
You must have seen some big changes in Phuket over the years, in your opinion have these been for better or for worse? I think that in terms of infrastructure we are trying to grow with the growing number of tourists, which is positive. However, in terms of development I think that they are lacking any kind of
plan, there is clearly some overdevelopment which is unsustainable and this is negative for the island. We have also been using a lot of natural resources since the tourism industry took off, and I feel that nothing is being done to replace those.
If Phuket didn’t have a tourism industry what do you think would you be doing? I actually love working in this field and have been interested in travel from a very young age. I also love seeing people and working with people, so I think that perhaps I would be a flight attendant, or a tour guide, but I think it would definitely be within the tourism industry somewhere and somehow.
Where is your favourite place in Phuket and why? I love peaceful places so I would have to say Phuket Town as it is still vey peaceful and calming. It’s also a place which is so rich in culture which I also love.
What’s your role, as a business, with the local community? With regards to our resort, we regularly sponsor and donate money and goods to the island’s underprivileged children, www.phuketindex.com

will still see growth, I think that we will see a change in the market. We’re already seeing that many Singaporeans, who have been coming to Phuket for years, have changed their preferred destination, and I believe that we will continue to see changes like this as there are now more countries that are targeting the tourism industry more than they did before.
What does the future hold for you? Right now we’re working on our second project, a new luxury resort named Keemala. Kee again after my grandmother and mala as it’s located in an area of Kamala. This is going to be a 5 star luxury resort with only 38 units. It is going to be very unique compared to other luxury hotels located in that area, and as we’re concerned about natural resources, although our location will be on a forested hill, we will be keeping virtually all the tress there are on the 18 rai plot of land.
unfortunately, I see there is a big divide between the rich and the poor families here in Phuket, and therefore I feel it is important to help those who are not as privileged as others. We also take part in a lot of community activities such as replanting of the mangrove forests and beach cleaning, and we’re also a sponsor for the local Patong Hospital and donate money to them so they can buy any necessary medical equipment and supplies.
What do you believe makes Phuket the popular destination it is? I think the main thing is Phuket’s unique local culture, I don’t believe that many places in the world have such a diverse culture like Phuket. Secondly, it has to be the beaches. Although I personally don’t feel the beaches have been taken care of and developed as they should have been, the feedback I get from tour operators is that Phuket is still one of the most popular beach destinations for tourists.

The concept of this resort will focus on well-being and local culture combined together, and will feature only individual units which will be very unique in design. Readers will have to stay tuned to see how it will look in the future as it is planned that it will be finished in August 2015. But I can assure you it will be very different to anything else there is on the island.
Finally, for you personally, Phuket now or 25 years ago? I personally would prefer 25 years ago. As I mentioned earlier, I love peace and quiet, now there are so many people moving to Phuket to live and work it’s getting overcrowded. I also think some areas are too overdeveloped and sometimes I think this has really damaged and spoilt the island.

Saving the Andaman Sea and our dream In this interview, you will get to know Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation Center 5 Director and the Centers Operations directly from the Director himself. Khun Tanet Munnoy kindly agreed for our team to meet with him at his office at the stunning Cape Panwa area of the island. The reason why we wanted to discuss the center with Khun Tanet was to provide you with the true views and facts of the agency and individuals who dedicate their lives to care for the resources both along the coast of and in the Andaman Sea. We believe that the general perception of Phuket Island is it is considered to be a region abundant with natural beauty, and also a treasure trove of money and income for its people. However, if you look at Phuket’s conservational programs, unfortunately there are very few, and they are certainly not a priority. Indeed, the nature of Phuket, which at present is very fragile because of the growing use of resources, needs to be assessed to know its exact current situation so that measures can be taken to ensure the island’s nature, especially within the sea, remain intact.

Special Interview Interview We work as “Defenders” whose role it is to consistently monitor and oversee the area’s coastline. The Center, which is responsible for the Andaman Sea, an area with an approximately 585 km long coast, covering 3 of the 6 Andaman provinces; Phuket, Phang Nga and Ranong. Our 3 primary missions are:
The protection of natural resources, that is conservation, although the Department itself does not have its own legislation. But we do get mandates from other relevant laws that need to be enforced fairly and seriously. The problem of resources, especially in the sea, is caused by mainly human waste. Many arrests are made for large commercial fishing boats found operating within the 3,000 metres nearshore zone, etc, devastating local marine resources, and drastically reducing fish populations which should still be in abundance.
Conservation and restoration of areas with seagrass or coral. These areas can be exploited by tourism, but must be controlled by avoiding excessive harmful human activities and monitoring destruction caused by natural factors too. However, restoration missions can be a remedy in areas which are vulnerable to loss of resources, such as the collection of marine debris, which is a problem that will continue to destroy seagrass and corals. Currently, this is a problem that’s an international issue. Seagrass areas can also be restored by planting new seagrass. This includes coral transplantation to replace those that have been destroyed by things such as anchoring of boats and destructive fishing.
Promote the conservation of marine and coastal resources, each year we organize workshops and activities for the public, network members, students and entrepreneurs such as training
camps to instill a love for the sea, or enhancing programs to educate tour guides and operators to provide them with accurate information on the use of natural resources. We also co-organize annual events with groups of diving operators and relevant government agencies gathered under the name “Go-Eco Phuket” to collect marine debris, so far these have been a huge success and achieved so much.
Why did the Andaman change? The center only has 30 staff to cover the entire area and this is difficult. But we have a network of public people to help care and provide information to us. The current ecological conditions along the coast and in the sea is worrisome, and most of this has been caused by human activities, for example waste in the sea, fishing with nets and diving irresponsibly thus destroying coral reefs in the tropical zone along the sea coast, and these kinds of problems are severe. And we know that dolphins and dugongs are coming ashore because they have swallowed plastic bags. Yes we understand that underwater artificial reef placements will at some point become beautiful, but this takes more than 10 years, but destruction takes just a few minutes. How do we find a solution, there is only the local people, because it is only the people in the area that understands the situation. We often say that Phuket Island is an invaluable treasure of everyone. Therefore, everyone involved should help maintain this treasure, because what we use every day, but never care for, may someday be degraded until a remedy is too difficult to find.

Special Interview Interview Ecotourism to solve the situation The center understands that tourism is important for Phuket and the economy, however, we will not be responsible for the promotion of tourism directly, but we will always support it. A survey of the natural areas of Phuket shows that although they are popular with tourism, they are beginning to decline somewhat. But there are also other island areas with a wealth of beauty and integrity. The Center also plans future events that will get support from the local government in promoting new tourist destinations, which focus on ecotourism, island and reef diving visits. We will focus on tourism in order to learn and understand real nature. We expect to promote qualitative travelers as a sustainable success, because they will forward the attitudes and values in the use of natural resources of the sea onto the next generations.
A story of conservation Conservational activities for coastal resources in Phuket have been held by both the public and private sectors. This is very good, however in my opinion, long term solutions should be added into the story. For example, sea turtle release participants are interested in a specific event day and to release the turtles, but they will soon forget. But if we add a sea turtle nursery that allows people who are interested in helping out with administrative expenses and being adoptive parents of a turtle this would be much better. We will save all the turtles
information on a microchip, and in the future this will allow us to check where the turtle is living. We believe that these stories are valuable and more cherished, and that these concepts can apply to other aspects of conservation projects such as mangrove planting or artificial reef placement.
Note to residents and visitors I was and never will be a Phuketian but I took on my duty about 2 years ago, and when I came and took on this survey I was amazed at the magic and the integrity of the area’s natural resources. I have a motto for the work of our organization “Save the Andaman Sea and our Dreams”, and I want to keep on focusing on our mission to keep Phuket the way it should be. Phuket’s sea is the dream of everyone who visits, both in memory and reality and we want those visitors to keep coming back. And I invoke upon all who are involved in business and tourism here to please be more responsible for our island, more nature friendly, for the island’s long life value and for it to be sustainable.
