If there’s one thing Phuket is great for its riding big bikes. And for the growing number of big bike riders based here on the island they have the added bonus of not having to put their bikes away for the winter. In recent years, Phuket has seen a huge increase in the number of people riding big bikes and riding big bikes is a hobby for many Thais and expats who are based here. For big bike lovers there is nothing better than jumping on their machines in their free time, and riding around taking in the amazing scenery that Phuket has to offer and also enjoying the growing social side of what Phuket’s big bike scene has to offer. Phuket has not only seen an increase in the number of big bike riders, it has also seen growth in the number of shops selling these amazing and often
luxurious machines, and a variety of outlets that cater for the riders, be it in the form of bars and restaurants or tour companies that offer riders, both living here or visiting for a holiday, a chance to go out and be shown not only Phuket’s natural beauty but also that of its neighbouring provinces. A large number of people are also choosing to reach Phuket by means of their big bikes. This is especially the case in April of every year, when Phuket sees its annual Big Bike Week. Back in 1995 when it started, it featured only 150 bikes and around 300 visitors. The ride was organised by Phuket Riders Club and the Immortals Thailand Club, who were joined by big bike riders from Bangkok, Malaysia, Singapore and America. Next year will see the 19th Phuket Bike Week, and it is estimated the 2013 event will play host to more than 6,000 riders and bring no less than 600 million baht in revenue to the island.

West Coast Ride Thailand are probably the biggest of the growing number of big bike shops dotted around the island and are also the main organisers of the increasingly popular Phuket Bike Week Event.
Coffee Bikers is not just a shop, it’s a community. Yes Coffee Bikers does sell a large range of new and secondhand popular big bikes, from big manufacturers including Ducati, Kawasaki, Honda, Triumph, Harley Davidson and Suzuki. However, the outlet features a concept more similar to that of a coffee shop, selling a great variety of food and drinks, alongside a range of clothing and big bike part & accessories.
They sell and rent a variety of old and new major brand big bikes, with Harley Davidson unsurprisingly being the most popular in both categories. The engine sizes of their bikes start at 250cc and can go up to a staggering 8200cc. They also stock one of the largest ranges of parts, accessories and clothing and have a repair & service centre.
The shop is located directly opposite Phuket’s popular weekend market so is an even more popular hangout for Phuket’s Big Bike community come Saturday & Sunday.

During the 1950s, 1960s and the better part of the 1970s, the company manufactured motorcycles with two-stroke engines only. It was not until 1976 that Suzuki introduced its first motorcycle with a four-stroke engine.

hen you come to Phuket, you might see a number of Phuketian ladies dressed in Nyonya. In Phuket, Nyonya refers to traditional ladies Peranakan clothing. Nyonya is suitable for weddings, ordination ceremonies, and other social activities and every Friday government officers wear Nyonya to work.
An Introduction to Phuket Nyonya: Nyonya outfits comprise of 4 items. The first are the beautiful blouses. These are made from traditional Nyonya fabric and lace. The former feature flowers in beautiful colours. The latter is simple lace. The blouses come in a range of unique colours.

Next are the Sarongs. These sarongs also feature flowers which match with the colour of the blouse. There are plain flower patterned sarongs, whilst some are decorated with colorful beads and others textured with gold paint. The next item is the elegant beaded shoes. To begin you’ll need golden hair pins. Those who wear Nyonya usually accessorise their hair with beautiful hair pins. Golden blouse pins are another necessary accessories. Wearing Nyonya is slightly different when it comes in the form of bridal wear. Brides wear plain white blouses beneath long gowns, together with long bold Nyonya sarongs. Bridesmaids wear almost identical outfits, except they wear short lace blouses instead of a gown.
Colours of Nyonya As mentioned earlier, Nyonya blouses and batik sarongs are quite colourful. Softer shades of either warm or cool tones are worn! Blouses and sarongs are usually 2 contrasting colours, for example, red and yellow. However, you can wear any colour of blouse and choose a black batik sarong, which features flowers the same colour as those on the blouse. For example, you can wear a blue blouse and black batik sarong which has blue flowers. And white goes with any colour. If you are interested in trying, or owning this beautiful Nyonya, you can head to Thalang Road, in old Phuket town! There are many stores where you can shop for Nyonya. Nyonya are available for rent and sale. In addition, you can have them tailor-made for you. Nyonya blouses usually come in one size only and prices start from 800 baht going up to 3,000 Baht, while sarongs cost anywhere between 100 & 3,000 Baht.

owadays it’s not only the ladies who flock to the dermatologist’s office for a quick fix. An estimated 30% of patients are male and the number is steadily increasing. Men seek treatment for anything from excess body hair, love handles and acne scars to rosecea and skin rejuvenation. With today’s advancements in cosmetic science and laser technology, many of these problems can be zapped away faster than you can say “Beam me up, Scotty!”
I’ve finally gotten rid of my teenage acne but I’m left with ugly scars on my face. Is there a way to remove these?

It can seem like double punishment - first the acne and when that’s finally cleared up; you’re left with the aftermath in the form of unsightly marks. The good news is there are a number of safe procedures available in modern dermatology that can greatly reduce the appearance of acne scars. A dermatologist can advise which kind of treatment is most effective, depending on the kind of acne scars to be treated. For mild cases, micro-dermabrasion, also known as a chemical peel, may help improve the skin’s condition, while more severe cases call for stronger measures like laser resurfacing. The squeamish among you might be relieved to know that while there may be some mild discomfort, treatments typically involve little pain as the skin is first numbed using a local anesthesia. The newest laser resurfacing “weapon” is a procedure called sublative rejuvenation. This RF (radio frequency) technology effectively delivers heat energy into the dermis, stimulating the growth of new collagen and improving skin texture, while leaving the surrounding tissue intact. One treatment is often enough for a significant improvement of acne scars. An added benefit is that it’s also capable of treating fine wrinkles, skin laxity and other skin irregularities.

Healthy looking skin can go a long way toward making a favourable first impression and the last thing you want is people to think is that you have a drinking problem. Persistent redness in the central part of the face, especially around the nose area, is a common complaint. The exact cause of rosecea is unknown but researchers suspect ageing and sun damage, as well as a combination of hereditary and environmental factors are to blame. There are several treatments available to effectively treat this common skin disorder, such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) and laser procedures GentleYag and Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL). As the name implies, IPL produces a spectrum of light to target the enlarged blood vessels and stimulate the absorption of red blood cells. GentleYag zaps the spots on the skin that are made up of blood and blood vessels, while patients with a more aggravated condition whereby red bumps or pustules are visible on the face, may benefit from PDL. Each of these procedures will most likely require several sessions before the skin is completely clear, depending on the gravity of the skin condition.

Wat Sapam is the local temple for Ban Sapam, a small fishing community on the east coast of Phuket. The temple is built on a small hill overlooking Sapam Bay, with the main temple at the highest point, the monk’s rooms on the hillside and the monk’s dining hall lower down. It’s a beautiful location, and also being so peaceful is suitable for meditation. Around the interior walls of Wat Sapam you will find some very colourful paintings depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. Wat Sapam is tranquility at its very best.
Wat Jareon Samanakit sits on a hill behind Phuket Provincial Court and is divided into three levels: the top level is home to all religious buildings, the second level is the monk’s dormitory and the lower has a chapel, kitchen, visitor’s shelter and the shrine hall (or ubosot) which is where most religious ceremonies take place. This beautiful building with its triple roofs gets busy on important Buddhist days such as Buddha’s birthday and the Sart Thai Festival. Wat Jareon Samanakit is considered a holy object by Phuket residents. Over the years, the local government has also used this place as a training centre for different subjects such as culture, health and careers.

Wat Khao Rang Built long ago on the hillside of the popular Khao Rang Hill in Phuket Town, Wat Khao Rang features Phuket’s original Golden sitting Buddha. The atmosphere of the temple is very peaceful and it is not a touristic attraction. Wat Khao Rang’s grounds are divided into two areas. The original building, with its numerous rooms and the sitting Buddha situated on its roof, with its back against the stunning green hillside backdrop. The new building, this stands at the long set of concrete steps decorated with the usual green Naga snakes, more quiet than the original building but with good views of a temple located across town.

The Winery The Gaja Winery was founded by Giovanni Gaja in 1859 and has been owned and operated by five generations of the Gaja family. Giovanni Gaja was the great-grandfather of Angelo Gaja, the Winery’s current owner. In 1994, GAJA acquired its first wine estate in Tuscany, Pieve Santa Restituta in Montalcino. This estate produces three Brunello di Montalcino wines- including the single vineyard Sugarillefrom vineyard holdings totaling sixty five acres. In 1996 Gaja acquired a second property in Tuscany, Ca’Marcanda, located in Castagneto Carducci in Bolgheri. Of the property’s 200 acres, 150 have been planted with new vineyards: primarily Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Currently, the Gaja Winery owns 250 acres of vineyards in Piedmont, located in the Barbaresco district (Barbaresco and Treiso) and the Barolo district (Serralunga d’Alba and La Morra). Since its inception, the Gaja Winery has continuously evolved in ways that have always focused on meticulous care of and attention to the quality of its wines.

t is not unusual for Thai’s to turn vegetarian at some point in their lives. There are a large number who stop eating meat for their entire lives. However, it is more common for them to do it on a temporary basis. Most Thai’s become vegetarian or mang sa wirat in Thai, as a way of cleaning their body after being ill or sometimes as a way of improving their karma. Phuket, like most Thai cities, is a city of food and it’s not really known for its vegetarian dishes. However, if you’re one of the Westerners who’s brought your vegetarian diet with you, getting meatless meals is easier than you think. Among the chicken, beef, pork and seafood dishes, there are a number of vegetarian options for you to discover. Thai dishes, along with the people who cook them, are very adaptable for different tastes, flavours and dietary needs.

A way of improving karma When it comes to restaurants, the best or safest options for vegetarians are Indian and Chinese restaurants and the noodle shops, which can be found on nearly every street on the island. Indian restaurants have to have vegetarian dishes for their Hindu guest, whilst Chinese restaurants have Chinese Buddhist customers who also need to keep to their strict vegetarian diets. The Noodle shops are a great option as their dishes are cooked in front of you and you can tell them exactly what you want or don’t want in your meal.

There are two very good Thai vegetarian restaurants in the heart of Phuket Town. Ruam Jai and Hoesan on Ranong Rd are popular and clearly labeled, serve a buffet style breakfast and lunch (both close around 4pm). Choose from different Thai-Chinese style veggies and curries to go with your steamed rice or opt for a noodle dish. The staff at both places is friendly and can point out which dishes are spicy and which are not. Meals are around 45/50 baht per person. If you really want to try out some fantastic Thai dishes which usually use meat as part of a dish, the meat can easily be removed, or substituted for tofu, egg or another vegetarian protein.
Phuket Vegetarian Festival 15-23 October 2012 The Phuket Vegetarian Festival is an annual event held during the ninth lunar month of the Chinese calendar. It is believed that the vegetarian festival and its accompanying sacred rituals bestow good fortune upon those who religiously observe this rite. During this time, local residents of Chinese ancestry strictly observe a 10-day vegetarian or vegan diet for the purposes of spiritual cleansing and merit-making. Sacred rituals are performed at various Chinese shrines and temples and aesthetic displays such as walking barefooted over hot coals and ascending ladders with bladed rungs are performed by entranced devotees known as “Ma Song”. Throughout the festival hundreds of food stalls will sell a variety of vegetarian food such as curries and sweets, noodles and more. Many restaurants will offer special vegetarian menus and many stop selling meat. Participating restaurants will fly a yellow flag showing their participation in the event.

Phuket is renowned for giving visitors enormous pleasure, not only because of its exquisite tropical setting but also because of the Thai people, who are usually pleasant and laid-back. However, for some of these people life here on Phuket is by no means easy. When you’re here, you are more than likely going to come across or see someone who appears to be in need. Beyond the largely beach-bound screen of the tourist industry - the sophisticated resorts, villas and restaurants Thai people are quite simple and in many cases quite poor. The Thai’s often easy-going nature sometimes actually hides the struggle many of them face.

Because the Lions Clubs are a multinational club and have very good worldwide connections, they managed to raise 1.1 million Euros, and with this money purchased land in Koh Sirae and officially setup the PSVF. Unfortunately, although the Lions Club had the ability to raise the funds and run the project, they realised they didn’t have the skills to run the child care center itself. Therefore, they called on Dr Supaluck from Child Watch Phuket to see if they would be
The Phuket Sunshine Village is a residential community constructed for less fortunate children in Phuket, following the Tsunami disaster in 2004. The Foundation, with support of donors from around the globe, was able to buy land in Koh Sirae, an area hit by the disaster. The Village focuses on family-based, long-term care of children. The children will experience reliable relationships, meaning they can recover from what they have experienced, which has often been traumatic. They grow up in a stable family environment, and are supported individually until they become independent young adults or until the family situation improves drastically. They assist their children to achieve a better future through developing their social skills, knowledge about Thai society and culture, teaching them about family values and responsibilities. An upbringing in a loving family-like environment with a nutritious diet and good health care are the most important aspects to ensure a better future for these children.

He has resided in Phuket for over 12 years, is a member of the Lions Club Phuket Andaman Sea and also a member on the Board of Directors of Phuket Sunshine Village Foundation (PSVF). Phuketindex recently went to chat with him more in-depth about the Foundation. After the Tsunami in 2004 the Lions Club Phuket Andaman Sea had the idea to establish a childcare scheme and child care

After the tsunami occurred, there was a lot of actionism on the island. Franco tells us “Everyone wanted to do something, and lots of people were running around raising funds. Although they were successful in raising the funds, unfortunately, many were raising them for their own pockets and this is something I will never forget.” Another thing that sticks in Franco’s mind about the tsunami is visiting Koh Sirae School, which housed children affected by the tsunami, many of whom are now housed in the PSVF Village. Franco said “We went to visit the children in the school and they looked at you with their big eyes, and even after all they had been through they still managed to smile.This made me even more dedicated to setting up the foundation and www.phuketindex.com

around 500,000 Baht a year. There are also a number of powerful Australians who help; the permanent English teacher at PSVF is funded by Phuket based and Australian owned Shades Co Ltd. One of the owners raises the funds every year to pay for the teacher. There are also a number of Lions Clubs, from around the world that frequently helps. A member of a German Lions Club recently passed away, and it was his last wish that instead of buying flowers for his funeral, people should make a donation to PSVF and amazingly this raised around 6,000 Euros. Franco advises anybody who wants to hold any kind of fundraising event to help PSVF, to contact their local Rotarian or Lions club in the first instance, ensuring the event can be seen as credible and there will be control over any proceeds coming from an event. Running the Village certainly needs continuous funding; it costs no less than 500,000 Baht per month to run. PSVF have now purchased another piece of land beside the Village, which they hope will house a sports and recreational and visitors area. Plans are currently being discussed and it is estimated they will require around 5 million Baht for the project. Once the final numbers have been calculated the Foundation will go about trying to receive the donations they require.
The entire Board of directors at PSVF works on a voluntary basis and Franco himself handles all of the Foundations communications. Most of the Directors spend up to 15 hours a week dedicating their time to the foundation.
There are some very generous local organisations who offer free time and facilities to keep the children occupied in their free time. Phuket Yacht Club in Ao Yong is a fine example, as every Sunday for the past 3 years they have taken the children to the club and taught them the skills of yachting. As a result of this, one of the eldest children will travel to Holland in August and compete in an International sailing event for his age category. Franco hopes any other local organisations in the same position as Phuket Yacht Club will someday approach them and offer their time and facilities and let the children of PSVF enjoy some of the things many of us take for granted.
PSVF would love to be able to have more volunteers working for them and they frequently receive requests from foreigners wishing to volunteer their time. However, due to labour laws they’re unable to take them on. However, there are a growing number of local volunteers who come frequently to visit the children and give their time participating in numerous activities with the children.
PSVF continue to look to increase their numbers of both local and international supporters and there are many ways in which we all can help them. Luckily for PSVF they have many potential donors from outside of Thailand. A gentleman from Luxemburg who lost his wife and daughter in the tsunami set up his own foundation purely to help PSVF. From this foundation PSVF receives

Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation Established after the Tsunami in 2004, Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation (PHBGTUF) was set up in order to improve the economic opportunities and life chances of young people, by funding and implementing high quality, practical English language education in government schools on Phuket Island. The Foundation creates vocational opportunities by developing English skills both through formal education as well as after school and non curricula activities. The Foundation teaches English to over 860 children in two Government schools; employing qualified, fluent English-speaking teachers to provide the best possible English language education. They also run an extracurricular program, Coconut Club, for children who are orphans or whose families are not able to look after them. Each day after school and on Saturdays the children come to the club to join in sports, arts and crafts programs. The aim of the organisation is to help Thai youth become capable and confident English speakers so they can secure well paid employment in Phuket’s tourism industry.
Tina Hall Born in the UK, Tina Hall attended University in London where she took a degree in Business Studies. Tina had a career in London and Australia as an event and conference organiser.

Almost 4 years ago Tina and her husband took a break from corporate life and visited Phuket to see if they would enjoy the lifestyle and if they could settle and call it home. Unlike her husband, who was happy to spend his time playing golf, Tina didn’t want to sit around and do nothing, so she decided to volunteer at Phuket Has Been Good To Us Foundation (PHBGTUF). Although she had no teaching background, she helped out in the classroom and at the Foundation’s

Coconut Club, a club that provides after-school, weekend and inter-session experiences, for the 160 residential students of the Rachaprachnukroh School in Kamala. Tina decided to enroll in a TEFL course, “During my time as a volunteer, I was amazed by the work the teachers and volunteers were doing. The teachers run amazing classes and created excitement and fun for the children. I enrolled to understand more about what the teachers and volunteers were actually doing in the school” she said. After 6 months as a volunteer, it was Tina’s intention to return to the cooperate world in Australia. However, prior to the end of her contract Tina became aware the position of Director of Operations at PHBTUF was to become vacant. She spoke to the Director of Operations about the requirements of the role and was sure it was something she could do. She has been here ever since! Along with raising funds, another of Tina’s duties is finding volunteers. Many volunteers learn of the opportunity from people who have already volunteered themselves, and returned home and shared their experiences with others. “They will tell people how they feel they have made a difference to the children’s lives and how enjoyable the experience is” Tina said. They also do leaflet drops around the island hoping to get locals and expats interested in helping and also place ads on websites specialising in volunteer work abroad. Tina told us one of the main problems for them, and other charities here who rely on volunteers is volunteer workers

still need to have a work permit and business visa. It is an expense that comes from the Foundation’s funds. Foreigners cannot come here and do short time volunteer work, the minimum time they would have a volunteer for is 6 months. Even then, they are just getting into the job and they have to back home again. When Tina took her business degree, she did so thinking she would run her own business. She believed everything she put in and got back would be for her. However, she never run her own business and whoever she worked for always got 100% out of her. Tina told us “You end up doing this for self satisfaction, knowing you’ve done a good job. However, it’s not you that benefits, it’s the company for whom you’re working. Now I’m at the Foundation, every minute I work means a child’s education might be better than it had originally been. This job really has a meaning and is so satisfying!” Many things have happened in her time with the Foundation, but there is one story that really sticks in her mind, and it relates to the after schools Coconut Club, originally started when it was noticed school boarders weren’t moving as quickly with their education as those who went home at the end of the school day. Tina went on to tell us, “There was a young boy called Bank, he was 2 or 3 years older than the others in his class and really stood out from the others. The Thai teachers thought he was surly, a bully and trouble maker. However, our teachers could tell he was clever and wanted to work hard. When children

in his class teased and bullied him he got very embarrassed. One night at the Coconut Club he was picked by a helper to play golf and it was noticed he had a really good swing. A short while after we held a golf tournament to raise funds, Bank was chosen to receive lessons from the golf pros and show our supporters how good he was. The following week, Bank was in class as a completely different person. He was showing the others how to play golf and explaining how he was chosen to go and represent the rest of the children. His teacher really noticed this as a big turning point for him. He gained a lot of respect from the other children and he also gained a lot self respect too.” As there’s only Tina and her small team of volunteers organising fundraising events and seeking sponsorship they’re expanding slowly. They have 5 paid teachers and 2 volunteers, and don’t have money to get more. Once they have the funds, they would like to teach in kindergarten at Kamala School, and provide other schools with free English lessons, from fluent native English speakers. If you would like to be involved with PHBGTUF, you don’t need to speak Thai or be a qualified teacher. The Foundation welcomes visitors to the afterschool programme where you can help with projects and expose the students to many different English accents. If you’re Thai and you can give one hour a week you would be helping. With regards to donations, the more money PHBGTUF raises the more teachers they can provide. If you’re interested in donating, visit their website to see how donations can be made. But at the end of the day, it’s not
only money people can donate. PHBGTUF accept all kinds of donations helping them save money, exercise books, photocopy paper, ink cartridges and stationary are things they need that cost money. Even if you’re here on holiday and want to leave something for them, you can leave anything at your hotel and the items will be collected. ell known Thai composer, songwriter and arranger Pongprom Snitwong Na Ayuthaya decided to extend his birthday greetings to His Majesty the King with a “music and art” project, entitled “Nitarn Pandin” (“The Chronicle of the Land”). Pongprom had planned to come out with this work to mark the King’s 84th birthday anniversary last year but because of the severe flooding postponed the project.

The project is made up of two parts. The first being a song entitled “Nitarn Pandin”, which narrates the meaning of “king” or “raja” in different eras and features lyrics in ancient languages.
“My aim is for everyone to be happy with what they are doing for the King, just as the King does so much for us. Our budget was insufficient at just Bt8 million but the project has still gone ahead because I believe in miracles,” he said.
The second, entitled “Niwet Silpa” or “Land Art” features original ‘Land Art’ installations that have been created for the occasion by Tawee Ratchaneekorn here in Phuket, Sakarin Krue-on in Khon Kaen, Nopadon Viroonchatapun in Nakhon Nayok, Amrit Chusuwan in Songkhla, Thongchai Srisukprasert

The Chronicle of the Land No.1 By Nopadon Viroonchatapun Nopadon has employed 1,999 yellow hay stacks to form the Thai number ‘9’ which is 399 metres long and 109 metres wide. Following the exhibition, these hay stacks can be used to cover the bases of palm oil trees, which will be used to produce alternative energy in the future. Nopadon has also created a permanent shrine with a portrait of H.M. the King shaped in a Pho tree leaf surrounded by Pho tree leaf bells to contribute to the peaceful ambience of the site. The Chronicle of the Land No.3 By Thongchai Srisukprasert Thongchai feels that fertile soil is vital. Therefore, Inspired by H.M The King’s Royal Soil and Water Project, he has created a work of art by digging a moat which can feed the land with water. The work represents His Majesty’s concern for Thai farmers as well as all his subjects with the rings symbolising Thai unity. Moreover, Thongchai uses the ancient Lanna flag as a sign of people’s devotion towards His Majesty. The 84 flags celebrate H.M. the king’s 84 golden years with smaller flags representing the people flying above the centre of the ring binding all together, the monarchy, the people, and the kingdom.
The Chronicle of the Land No.2 By Sakarin Krue-on As a reflection of His Majesty’s Sufficiency Economy philosophy, which emphasises close community ties, Sakarin has divided a large rice paddy area into 5 smaller fields of 1.2 metres each. Shaped in circles, their diameters range from 50-70 metres and all are intertwined (much like the Olympic rings). Each is then planted with a total of 200,000 rice plants and sugar cane, which in the future can be harvested for local consumption.

The Chronicle of the Land No.7 By Suriya Namwong Inspired by the “Phra Mahachanok” story, Suriya has created an art piece on a mound in Chern Tawan Dhamma Centre, Wat Pa Vimuttayalaya, Chiang Rai. Seven 80 metre rings circling a Pho tree, which symbolises Phra Mahachanok, are fed with water to symbolize the seven days he swam in the sea. For those who come to view this Land Art, they are able to meditate by walking around the art piece. Tawee Rajaneekorn Awarded National Artist status in 2005, 77-year-old veteran artist Tawee Ratchaneekorn has been one of Thailand’s most idiosyncratic creators for over 50 years. A versatile artist known best for his painting, but who has also worked in drawing, print, mixed media, and sculpture, Tawee is recognised for his raw, expressive, socially critical interpretations of the modernising face of Thai society. In recognition of his service to local art, Silpakorn University is exhibiting over 200 works by the retired lecturer. Under the subtitle “Society, Sins and Hell,” the exhibition is rich with the artist’s familiar crude caricatures of the human condition, often intersected with menacing bestial metaphors.

Project Volunteer’s Being a resort that prides itself on being a true Thai cultural retreat, which offers its guests a stay in a replica Thai village, where everything on offers is truly Thai, At Panta Phuket and their team could not resist the invitation to take part in creating and exhibiting a piece of ‘Land Art’ that would be part of the iconic ‘The Chronicle of the Land’ project. The management team of At Panta managed to gather a group of around 200 volunteers, made up of resort staff, TV representatives, local teachers and school children, members of rescue foundations, staff from AirAsia and local business people, who worked tirelessly in creating this amazing piece of ‘Land Art’ over the duration of two days.

Bridal Bouquets Where did they come from? Of all the flowers at a wedding, the bridal bouquet is probably the most important and noticed. The history of bridal bouquets dates back several hundred years, when instead of flowers, brides actually carried a bouquet made of various aromatic herbs and spices. It was believed that the scents of these bouquets had mystical powers and were used to ward off evil spirits. “It’s time for Souvenir Shopping!” I
f you’re here on holiday, I’m sure there are people you’re thinking about at home that you would like to buy something for to let them know where you’ve been. In fact, you will probably even want to buy something for yourself as a reminder of your time here. If you’re buying for someone else, you’re usually buying them something to let them know they were on your minds, sometimes it might even be a way of telling them you wished they were here with you. For most, a souvenir from Thailand would usually be a bargain item you’ve bartered for in markets here, the ones which are full of fake designer goods such as handbags, sunglasses or t-shirts. On the other hand, you may be one of the many had the pleasure of experiencing buying a Thai made handicraft from one of the hundreds of beach sellers which I’m sure you must have been approached by on one of the tourist beaches here in Phuket, such as Karon or Kata beach or the even more touristy Patong, where beach sellers flock the beach and walk up and down offering you their range of goods. Many tourists

have purchased small items after having fun haggling with such beach vendors. Many ending up with wooden elephants, bed covers, bandannas, sarongs, tuk tuks made out of old tin drink cans and carved soap, to name but a few. A lot of visitors to tourist attractions such as Big Buddha want to take home a replica Buddha statue or image to remind them of their visit to the attraction. Thailand has strict controls on Buddha images and what can be taken out of the country. Small Buddha images such as those sold in souvenir shops can be taken out with no hassle. However, all Buddha statues which are larger than 12cms in height must have an export permit to be allowed to be taken out of the country. There are also many shops here that are purpose-built souvenir shops. They sell Thailand made products that are hard to find in ordinary stores. Here are some of the most popular item visitors to Phuket take home as a souvenir of their time in the ‘Pearl of the Andaman’.

Pearls These have got to be one of the island’s best buys. Many pearl farms have been established on and around Phuket, and due to this cultured pearls sold in Phuket are both good quality and large in quantity. They are available either as a simple pearl or as items of jewelry.
Ceramics Handmade ceramic products are one of the most popular and memorable souvenirs. The quality native clay is used to make elegantly designed household articles, kitchenware and decorative items.
Batik Phuket’s Batik is designed with the makers using inspiration from the island’s natural surroundings, sea and marine life. Batik products include shirts, sarongs, skirts, bags and handkerchiefs.
Seashells Seashells are made into ornaments and items, such as necklaces, rings, bracelets, brooches, lampshades, photo frames, etc.
Cashew Nuts Cashew nuts are a local product of Phuket. Due to Phuket’s climate, cashew nuts here are often said to be better than those from anywhere else in the world. You can buy different types of cashew nut products such as roasted cashews with salt, cashew nuts fried with garlic, cashew nuts coated with chocolate, honey coated cashew nut brittle and even cashew apple juice.

HIDDEN BEACH 1. Yanui Beach
Yanui Beach is a quiet little cove located near Nai Harn Beach and Phrom Thep Cape. It’s a beautiful little cove perfect for snorkeling, kayaking and fishing. During high season there are sun loungers for hire as well as a stand that rents out snorkeling equipment, kayaks and body boards for very reasonable prices. The sand is beautifully soft and children love to collect shells on this beach. There are a couple of restaurants here which sell great seafood and Thai dishes.

2. Banana Beach
Banana Beach is gorgeous as well as nearly abandoned. It’s occasionally known as ‘Banana Rock Beach’ or ‘Hat Hin Kluay’ and isn’t known by many locals because it’s fairly remote. Even so, it truly is among Phuket’s most sparkling jewels when it comes to beaches and contains the atmosphere of a ‘hidden beach’. The name of the beach in Thai is not really banana. It is called after the rock form located in the area which symbolizes the beach. Banana Beach is located between Bang Tao and Nai Thon Beach.

3. Ao Sane
Ao Sane, a small rocky beach, can be found on Nai Harn’s northern end and is one of the island’s loveliest secrets. While it is not the best beach for sunbathing, it’s one of the best for snorkeling and diving as it boasts an abundance of sites. The beach is fringed by lush, green vegetation and trees that give a nice natural shade. This 200-metre long beach has a small restaurant and a few budget bungalows. You’ll meet some visitors here but the area never gets crowded.

4. Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach is a beautiful little beach located just to the south of Patong. The beach, which can be no more than 100 meters in length, is set in a secluded bay with soft pale sand, surrounded with beautiful green forests and palm trees. This private bay is very clean and well maintained and is somewhere to go to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of Patong Beach, and to make things even better no jet skis or beach hawkers are allowed here. The water at Paradise beach is a beautiful turquoise colour and is crystal clear. Due to the fact that there are large granite rocks at both ends of the beach there is a great feeling of privacy and there is a coral reef about 100 meters from the beach, which makes for perfect snorkeling.

Laem Ka
5. Laem Ka
Just north of Rawai beach is a small rocky bay, known as Laem Ka. Laem Ka is the only eastern-facing beach in the south of Phuket that offers good swimming and it’s a total full-on Thai experience. This sheltered, 150 metre long, boulder-framed beach is the ideal picnic spot, as from midday on it is shady and cool. For many locals it offers the opportunity to chat away Sunday afternoons while their children splash around in Laem Ka’s safe and blue waters just metres away.
