“Listening to and looking after our customers is what keeps our reputation so high and is our top priority

Daragh O Higgins - Managing Director of TechWorX Projects

People Focus

Daragh O Higgins on TechWorX and Smart Home Technology

W

ith the ever increasing demand for home automation technology in Phuket’s booming real estate market, we are seeing more and more companies rise up in response. TechWorX is one such company that plans to seize this opportunity. Reportedly 40% of new Australian homes now have “smart wiring” as standard and with more and more international customers insisting on this technology, the business of home automation on the island also seems set to take off. Here we will get to know Daragh O’Higgins, his company TechWorX, and his thoughts. Daragh O’Higgins came to Thailand about three years ago when Europe was facing an economic recession. Seeing a huge gap in the Thailand market, Daragh used his almost 30 year experience in audio visual, electrical, marine and IT based systems, gained mainly in Europe, to establish TechWorX in Thailand in partnership with Kay O‘Higgins and Tim Margetts.

What does TechWorX do actually? Basically we are a design and installation company for audio visual, lighting, electrical and automation systems. We offer the complete package from design to installation and commissioning with full after sales service. We are based in Phuket with two other locations in Samui and Pattaya, but can cater for work across Thailand and the SE Asian region. What is the most important thing you think works for your business? We are strongly committed to deliver a very good personalized service. Listening to and looking after our customers is what keeps our reputation so high and is our top priority. When people come to us, we listen and try to find out what they really want and then suggest things they maybe wouldn’t have dreamt of. We then go back and design a system and explain what can be done. This also goes along with sincere and dedicated after sales support. How is home automation technology going now? Home automation technology has advanced a lot in the last five years especially with the introduction of new IP based systems and integration with the Apple iPad. It makes home automation a lot easier and a lot cheaper than it was. Home automation, which used to be very exclusive for just a few homes is now available to a broader public. If I happen to be interested in home automation, what will I need? The most important thing when building a new house to install structured cabling, we call this smart wiring. With this in place it gives you the option to install and upgrade extra systems as

www.phuketindex.com

17

People

Fo c u s

and when you want to. For existing properties there are also wireless solutions to retro-fit any home. How about the trend in home automation? Is it possible to see every house in the world equipped with this technology? I think as time goes on it will become a standard, just like the electric, telephone or TV systems in your home. What degree of automation people will have, I can’t be sure but it is becoming more and more prevalent. A lot of condominiums we are working on are including automation as standard. So who does home automation suit? It’s been invented for everyone but obviously not for every house. Better to say it’s for anyone who wants it. The costs for a home automation system have a wide price range but significantly add value to the property after you install it. Home automation systems help save energy especially through lighting and climate control, which is now a matter of concern for many people apart from the obvious lifestyle benefits. Many thanks to Daragh O’Higgins. We wish you a successful business here in Phuket. Palazzo Theatre & Restaurant is the name for this high level dinner-show, well known in Europe. But now I’m very pleased to tell you that we don’t have to fly that far or seek a chance while traveling to Amsterdam, Munich or Vienna for the show. You can now enjoy it here, since Australian Vladislav Bond brought it right to your feet! For travelers, this could be a better choice for a night out than a nightclub or shopping you started to get used to.

Phuket Palazzo’s ‘Mirror Palace’ is tucked away in peaceful surroundings, on the way to Kathu Waterfall, just a few minutes away from Central Festival Phuket. The marvelous look and atmosphere of an antique marquee hints at something thrilling inside. Embellishing at the facade are genuine hand-paintings by popular artists. Inside are a cozy cluster of dining tables set in charming misty candle light. In the center of the palace, embraced by the crowd, is a show podium that is really close to the top view table - just reach out. The reflections of a thousand twinkling candles in many mahogany framed mirrors help get us in the mood for the amazing show. The ambience and aroma time-warp us to a long-lost world all night long - perfectly established in a luxurious nostalgic ‘Jewelry Box’ Theatre with just 250 seats. Complementing the atmosphere in an unforgettable experience is also the food. Here, their five courses of Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian touch are composed by the team of renowned Chef Maya Noosawat and Richard Marks. The menu comprises Lobster Bisque with Cognac, Beef Carpaccio & Japanese Caviar, Prawn & Scallop Double Act, Duck Wellington with Pineapple Sauce and Cream Cheese dessert with Tropical Fruit & Honey Cone: a big feast and of course delightful dining experience.

Unlike other shows, there is no clear separation set between dining and entertainment. We can let our heart flow with the rhythm of the performances that sometimes surpassed the boundary to our seats, while we easily find pleasure with the meal as every dish is served in a non-traditional artistic way. Show after show gradually creates bigger smiles, laughter and joy for us. They took our concept of time without knowing it. Whether it was the acrobatics, dancing, juggling, clowning and even opera singing, they are all professional, creative and mindful acts, so I didn’t regret spending money and time. Three and a half hours was a time of happiness we received from the international artists. It was the team’s talent, artistry and dedication that showed through the performance, eventually touching my heart. It was a simply beautiful night that gave me a favourable feeling. After a grand premier on 30 October 2010. Phuket Palazzo will open daily except Monday which is reserved for classical music concerts. Central Festival Phuket’s 6th Year Anniversary

New Food Hall and its customers’ comments

C

entral Festival Phuket has been serving Phuket’s community since 2004, just a little before the tsunami hit the Andaman shore and turned this island’s high season into crisis. There was no exception for Central Festival Phuket, as businesses had to struggle to survive despite the fact that they came with a strong base. However, it has proved itself through the

past five years and finally became a focal point for the island’s fashionable people. “We have now become the ‘meeting point’ or in other words the ‘living room’ for most people on this island!! With our full shopping & entertaining services and all conveniences, Central Festival Phuket has brought to Phuket new lifestyle trends and new tourism

related businesses. We take pride in becoming one of Phuket’s landmarks and a must-come-to venue.” states Ms Wilaiporn Pitimanaaree, the General Manager/Marketing Director of Central Festival Phuket. In the celebration of its 6th year anniversary, Central Festival Phuket flagged Asia for its next goal. As Wilaiporn said “It’s one of Asia’s best shopping and lifestyle destinations and it’s now undergoing major renovation and upgrading with new international and local retail brands and new facilities - all the best of the best services to feature.” Before the renovations complete in December and the major re-launch event at Central Festival Phuket’s new look this X’Mas season, its recently launched Central Food Hall seems to be the talk of the town for a while. Central Food Hall has set to be one of Asia’s finest food stores offering the most extensive and exclusive selections of food from all around the world. It supplies an abundance of premium food products including fresh meat, seafood, a wide selection of cheese, fruit and vegetables, readyto-eat food and many other consumer products from top local and international producers. It also has large in-store bakery providing an immense variety of bread, pastries and cakes, and customers can choose from either or both Eastern or Western baking styles.

And what about its customers’ opinions? Paparwin May Pachantabutr Deputy Managing Director of Kan Eang@pier and Patak Villa “Of course, I’m so happy with the huge advancement of the Food Hall. There are really wide ranges of products and plenty of quality food for me to choose here. But it’s not only the food I enjoy; our new restaurant “Vset” also uses kitchenware from Central Festival.”

Praewpayom Aikwanich Assistant Advertising Sales Manager “Why Central Festival? There are many reasons I love to spend my free time here. They have a lot of shops. Parking is convenient. Its location allows an easy access, so for me travelling is convenient as well. The newly launched Central Food Hall is so lovable. It has a lot .. a lot more to find. Central Festival Phuket in my opinion is what teenagers like for a perfect lifestyle in Phuket.”

“Anything for

everyone”

I

t’s an effort and intention of the owner to make the ‘Brasserie’ belong to everyone. “Brasserie may be new to Phuket but I hope it becomes the place everybody knows and visits regularly within two years after the opening. It’s not only a restaurant but it’s a place where you can relax, enjoy a glass of wine, socialize with your best friends, talking about your last love or new love and whatever topics you like.” said Alain Tabruyn, the owner. ‘Brasserie’ is a type of restaurant that is not that familiar in Thailand but is very common in Europe. I am not sure if there are any other real brasseries in others part of Thailand or not, but for Phuket this is one of the very few.

28

www.phuketindex.com

Formed from Alain’s imagination, it has a laid back atmosphere, but still features a nice corner where you can have level up experience if you want. You can have lobster or oyster, wine or champagne or beer. “Everything is possible here”. The ‘Brasserie’ is divided into four different zones, roughly. Going from the front, it is an oyster bar, a restaurant with customizable tables, a wine bar and a beer bar. The back of the restaurant is an indoor area that is decorated to look like a backyard. It boasts a strong French garden motif with an optimistically yellow-painted wall coupled with manicured trees and numerous chairs to relax on.

Eats & Fun

Dining Lifestyle

The main focus however has to be the stunning bar that serves more than 32 different Belgian beers “which are unknown in Phuket until today, but they are very famous in some parts of the world, of course in Belgium” told Belgian native Alain who has a strong passion to make Belgian beer more available in Phuket. He explained to us the reason why there are more than 8000 beers in a very small country and stressed “It’s Belgian’s tradition. We consider beer just the same way as French consider wine.” Belgian beers have a long history and offer different tastes with the degree of alcohol that ranges up to 15 percent. So it requires different ways to drink each beer and also different dishes to pair with. At ‘Brasserie’,

everything is homemade and top quality.

The menu will be changed frequently but the highlights e.g. world’s famous “Moules frites” from Belgium, some typical Belgian dishes and the basic dishes like steak & lobster will remain. The funny thing but excellent idea about the restaurant is the steak that is not strict. You can either order 100 grams for yourself (if you happen to have only 200 baht left in your pocket) or as much as you can eat like a whole kilo to feed your starving stomach (oh I love to hear this). Note that your meat might be shown around the restaurant! Unlike many restaurants, ‘Brasserie’ style is easy going, open and flexible. Sometimes, it may be too old fashioned for you, sometimes it’s not. It can also have a Thai DJ at weekends, be 60’s style to recall your memories or be a white party, a magician night, as well as a Thai movie star night, but something always happens after 11. The ‘Brasserie’ is

that kind of place where everybody can come for just a cup of coffee and sit back for hours or simply have top food which will be served in a simple but nice presentation, while enjoying free Wi-Fi everywhere within the Brasserie at the maximum speed you can have in Phuket. A Wi-Fi printer is also available for your business meeting or an urgent need. ‘Brasserie’ is located just a few steps away from the Fountain Circle on Rassada Road near the banks & fresh market in Phuket Old Town area. Have fun!

hey say Patong is where you can find anything for your palate even something unique every day. ‘Pimento’ is one place you can enjoy your lunch or dinner unlike anywhere else in Patong. It is a new tapas bar and restaurant opened in a new concept brought in by a Thai designer who has the taste for food as good as he has for fashion. The ‘Pimento’ is located in Patong’s upscale ‘The Kees Plaza’ on Taweewong Road just opposite La Flora Resort Patong.

‘Pimento’ is truly a place where price comes together with quality of food. Mediterranean cuisine is the main character here. They serve an array of tapas, salad, pastas, pizzas, light meals and desserts which will never let people down. To complete the meal there is a selective range of wines, cocktails and other beverages at the bar. The atmosphere is intimate and cozy with its decoration and the style of service they deliver. You can choose whether to dine with air-conditioning or alfresco with two options; at the chic tables in front of the restaurant or upstairs under the shades. Once you step in, we are pretty sure you will be excited with a large wall painting portraying the local lifestyle at a busy market. Sunday is special with ‘Pimento Sunday Tapas Brunch’. It costs you only 299 baht nett with over 30 choices of tapas. Unlimited sangria is included. ‘Pimento’ serves you daily from 12.30 - 23.00 hours. Salvatore's Restaurant

Italian Dining in Town

S

ometimes good things don’t have to come in a costly package, don’t you think? Good restaurants also don’t have to be in the prime district or always looks expensive.

In one corner of Phuket’s downtown, not very far from Phuket Municipality’s fresh market, Salvatore’s Restaurant has been established there and quietly built its reputation and won many fans from Italian cuisine lovers, both locals and tourists alike, for over a decade.

But wait, this is nothing to be surprised at because Salvatore’s Restaurant actually is not the first child of its owner Salvatore Cossu. He actually opened a few restaurants in Patong before it was established in Phuket town. For Phuket’s real fans of Italian cuisine, one of his original restaurants was named ‘Marco Polo’ to help kick your memory. Salvatore’s Restaurant offers you an opportunity to consider if it matches your budget or not before you enter by displaying a menu that indicate prices right in front of the restaurant. That’s fair enough to let you go somewhere else if you want. The only thing to keep in mind is that at this restaurant, you get good food that your money deserves. Chef Salvatore Cossu will make sure everything is right at it should be. Some of his meat, fish, and vegetables have been imported but some is bought new daily by the chef himself. Its menu features pasta, lasagna, steaks, and a range of daily specials including freshly baked breads which all are made with loving care. Dining at Salvatore’s Restaurant is like being at a special feast at one of your friend’s house – its casual ambience and friendly service showed us that.

t Salvatore’s, Italian pizza is freshly baked in an original Italian oven. Pizza al Prosciutto or Pizza with Prosciutto Ham is one of the most popular and favourite dishes for customers, besides its other genuine Italian dishes that are served here. Chef Salvatore Cossu, the owner who has over 40 years of experience in kitchens, will cook for you himself. He promises the Italian pizza’s

tradition will be kept while the ingredients are top quality. His pizzas are soft inside and crispy outside, as six to seven hours are spent on the dough. It’s the way to cook. No butter. A

ccording to Thai Traditional Medicine, the human body is composed of four ‘elements’. Those are earth, water, wind and fire which balance living with maintenance in the human body through an association with the vital organs. It is also believed that each single person will have one ‘element’ that is more dominant than others which is basically determined by the date and month of one’s conception.

For those who were born in Thailand, their ‘body element’ will be according to their month of birth:

Earth: November, December, January Fire: February, March, April Wind: May, June, July Water: August, September, October The ‘body element’ is therefore what plays an important role to one’s characteristics and appearance as well as one’s health condition. Although this has been determined since one was born, the ‘body element’ can be altered by the way one was raised up, eating behavior, age and environment. While the equilibrium of these ‘elements’ promotes one’s health, an imbalance causes illness and disease in contrast. To prevent illness, Thai Traditional Medicine suggests people keep a good balance of ‘elements’ by focusing on food and herbs we eat, in accordance with each body ‘element’ and avoid foods that do not. Sukko Spa presents set menus by ‘elements’ at its own restaurant and was kind enough to share one with us. Find below a recipe for ‘Pla Gai’, a healthy menu for ‘wind element’ people.

Why Should We Use

Natural Products W

ould you consider drinking a teaspoon of detergent, dye, fragrance, petroleum or other chemicals known to be toxic, some even causing cancer? Would you want to rub toxins and poisons on to the skin of your children? That is exactly what nearly all of us do who use ‘ordinary’ personal care products, such as shampoo, conditioner, soap, lotion, bath gel, face cream and more, and have been doing for years if not decades. The skin is the largest organ of the human body, and whatever we put on our skin goes into our bodies. Yes that is right, our bodies absorb about 60% of all those lotions and potions, age serums and wrinkle creams, bath gels and sweet smelling soaps, sun screens and make-up that we apply day after day, many of us, especially women, use over 10 different products daily. And in nearly all products are toxic chemicals, even when the product is labelled natural. Just have a look at the ingredient list of your current shampoo. Ingredients are listed from the largest percentage to the smallest. Sodium lauryel sulfate or its slightly milder cousin sodum laureth sulfate (SLES) is probably one of the first 3 ingredients, right? Sodium Lauryl Sulphate is used as a garage floor cleaner, engine degreaser, car-wash soap, laundry soap, dish soap etc. It is very strong and corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces. This is a harsh detergent that is proven to cause skin irritation and understandably so, as our skin is much more delicate than a garage floor or frying pan. Another popular ingredient is petroleum, often referred to as petro-chemicals. Items made from this include baby oil, mineral oil, petroleum jelly and balms. Petroleum is a by-product from the production of crude oil, the same stuff gasoline is made from. No Petroleum based product is appropriate for health care as they can actually damage the body and interfere with the body’s reproductive functions. Another common irritant and potentially toxic ingredient in many products is fragrance. Companies are not even required to list the exact ingredients comprising the fragrance and can simply add ‘fragrance’ on this list. As it stands today many ingredients used in cosmetics that are banned in the European Union are still allowed in other countries and are not required to be tested for safety. It is important to read between the lines and read labels carefully, even contacting companies directly if you have questions about the ingredients. Many companies claim they sell “natural beauty products “but the truth is that they may contain less than 1% natural ingredients.

46

www.phuketindex.com

A very popular, expensive and global body care corporation had this to say about their products when questioned about why they used SLES and other toxic chemicals. “[Our] products contain natural ingredients, which can represent 0.5% - 99% of the formulation. We do not promote ourselves as “all natural.” Rather, we prefer to describe our products as “naturally based” - inspired by natural ingredients and traditional sources.” Certainly from their advertising one would think their products are “all natural” and not possibly only 1% natural and 99.5% chemical. It is important for us consumers to educate ourselves and make informed choices when buying products. Is it worth it to have red lips if the lipstick contains lead? Do you really want to clean your body with toxins, some even known to affect reproductive health or cause cancer? The good news is that Thailand has a lot of really great natural products. Virgin organic cold pressed coconut is amazing and has so many uses. It is a great replacement for baby oil, (which is just mineral oil with some fragrance). Coconut oil makes a perfect eye make up remover (do you really need something blue to take off your make up?), body lotion, face cream if your skin is not too oily, lip gloss, hair serum and de-frizzer. It is also good for cuts and scrapes to prevent scarring and has some antibacterial qualities. Best of all it is not very expensive. There are also many natural soaps, gels and shampoos available from small companies in Thailand who believe in offering consumers a healthier choice and an alternative to the big brands. Companies who actually care about providing a good quality product that is truly natural. Coconut oils, rice bran oils, essential oils and natural herbs can all be used to make wonderful body-care products, better and healthier than anything chemical. Products you can use with peace of mind. So remember when you use shampoo made of chemicals, you absorb that. If you use natural shampoo made of natural oils and herbs, you absorb those botanical ingredients instead. As a general rule for healthier living we should only put something on our body that we would put also put in our mouth. Health & Beauty Du k a n Diet

Dukan Diet

Allowed foods and how it works

Dukan Diet – Rapid Weight Loss Following The Pierre Dukan Regime The Dukan diet promises fast weight loss without starving yourself. Some foods are allowed on the Dukan diet and some are not allowed. The good news is that, of the foods you are allowed, you can eat as much as you like. The better news is that the Dukan diet lets you eat things like steak, chicken, fish and cheese (OK, cottage cheese but that’s better than no cheese!) What you can’t eat is carbs like bread, potatoes, rice and sugar. For the first 3-7 days, during the Attack Phase, vegetables are off-limits too. Let’s have a look at the different phases of the Dukan diet.

Dukan diet – Attack Phase The Dukan diet (named after Pierre Dukan, the French nutritionist who created it) involves four phases. The first one is the Attack phase and this is a protein only period of 3 to 10 days (depending on your weight loss goal). During this period you will experience rapid weight loss and will set yourself up for the next phase in the Dukan diet, the weight loss phase. You must drink plenty of

WATER!!!

48

www.phuketindex.com

Health & Beauty Dukan Diet

Dukan diet – Weight Loss Phase In this phase of the Dukan Diet you will introduce vegetables into your diet. You are now allowed to eat most vegetables (except the starchy ones like potatoes, corn, beans, etc). However, in this phase of the Dukan diet you do not eat vegetables every day. You alternate protein only days with protein + vegetable days. As with the Attack Phase, you can eat as much as you want so there is no need to feel hungry. This phase continues until you have reached your target weight.

Dukan diet – Stabilization Phase Once you have reached your ideal weight, having reached your weight loss goal on the Dukan diet – congratulate yourself! But don’t rush back to your bad old ways, gorging yourself on whatever you like. If you do, as with all diets, the weight will quickly pile back on. Dr. Dukan, with thirty years experience as a nutrionist, built into his diet regime, the Stablization phase to combat this. You can’t go wild but you can introduce Fruit and Bread and Cheese and Starchy food! You can also enjoy TWO COMPLETELY

UNRESTRICTED MEALS A WEEK!!!

Unfortunately, you can’t go mad with your new food allowance. But you can have:

• • • • •

One serving of fruit per day 2 slices of whole wheat bread per day 1 portion of cheese (40g) per day 2 servings of starchy foods per week (rice, pasta, potatoes, cous-cous, etc.) 2 full meals of whatever you want per week (you have to be sensible, anything you want but not a binge!)

The Stablization period of the Dukan diet is calculated using the following formula:

Duration (in days) = lbs lost x 4.5

So if I have lost 14lbs over the previous two phases, the stabilization phase will be 63 days.

Dukan diet – Cruise Phase You are now officially off the Dukan diet but you still have one commitment to follow for the rest of your life (or until you decide to put on weight) and that is one protein only day

a week.

The reason for using

RETRACTABLE

AWNINGS

I

t’s not hard to remember the blinding glare off an unprotected porch or the scalding concrete by a swimming pool or the stuffy, still air by a west-facing window. Retractable awnings use a simple but effective trick to control pounding heat, glare and UV rays: they block the sun. An awning blocks sunlight before it ever reaches a window or deck. This means that all the heat and energy coming from the sun is stopped before it can touch the surface of your home.

The key reasons for using retractable awnings

• • • • • • • • •

Control the amount of light indoors Reduce temperatures both indoors and outdoors (up to 20 degrees) Protect people and furnishings from damaging UV rays, glare, sun and heat Save on electricity and air conditioning costs Add a colorful touch of style that fuses with any architectural style Add property value to your home or business Increase your outdoor living space Save on construction costs. Significantly less costly than most permanent construction, and it’s like adding an extra room Rain protection - easy to keep light rain off your terrace, deck, patio, balcony, hot tub, poolside, and driveway

Retractable awnings will be useful in protecting the outdoor and indoor spaces. You can control current consumption. They don’t require support poles as in the case of fixed awnings. The benefit of installing a retractable awning will be much more than

50

www.phuketindex.com

using fixed awnings. If a day is cloudy and if you feel that the light is not sufficient inside your residence, just by rolling back your awnings, you can get more light. If there is inclement weather, just roll out the awning to protect your house from damage. You can use a remote control to operate the awnings. Motorized and manual versions of retractable awnings are available with the dealers. Motorized awnings are priced higher than the manual models.

The best way to

renovate your home A home renovation can be a great way to boost your home’s value. Planning is the key to a successful renovation. To help you plan your renovation project, we have information and easy-to-understand tips that can help you assess your requirements and learn the key questions, and answers, before you get started.

1

Design and Planning Whether it’s a sketch on a cocktail napkin or full-blown architectural plan, some types of planning and design always comes first. • Ensure that you have funding for your renovation. • Draw up a simple “yes/no” list of do-it-yourself projects and projects you want professionals to do. • Look for contractors and subcontractors for those jobs you do not want to do yourself. • Apply for permits.

2

Roof, Foundation, Siding, Windows Protect your future renovation work by making certain the house won’t collapse on you (foundation, major structural problems) and that it will remain dry (roof, siding, windows). • Secure the foundation. • Make major structural repairs to areas such as weakened walls, joists, and carrying beams. • Repair or replace damaged roofs. • Replace seriously damaged windows that may threaten future remodeling work. If not seriously damaged, leave it for later in the process.

52

www.phuketindex.com

• If the siding is so damaged that it will allow water infiltration, repair or replace the siding. If not seriously damaged, leave it for later in the process.

3

Demolition Depending on the scale of your renovations and the condition of the house, demolition might be the first step. • Rent a large container for waste. • Carefully demolish all or some of the areas of the house that will be renovated. Demolish as much as possible if you will not be living in the house. • Exercise caution when demolishing surfaces coated with lead-based paint.

4

Structural Carpentry At this time, call in the carpenters for major carpentry projects. Things like: • • • •

Moving walls. Constructing new walls. Significantly enlarging window openings. Adding beams to support a greater weight upstairs. • Punching in new doors (or removing existing doors). • Adding new construction windows.

5

HVAC Ductwork, Electrical, and Plumbing With the walls and ceiling open, it’s time for the ‘Heating, Ventilating, and Air Conditioning’ or HVAC company to install ductwork for central heating and air conditioning. Also with the walls

Home & Décor Feature accessible, run new electrical and plumbing systems. Electrical and plumbing inspectors should visit at this time, too.

6 7

Insulation Last thing to do with the walls open: install fiberglass batt insulation in the walls and attic. Insulation goes fast, so give your drywaller a call and let him know he’s next up. Drywall • A second inspection from the electrical inspector (and perhaps the plumbing inspector) will give you the go-ahead to close up the walls. • Drywallers hang sheets of drywall, apply drywall compound, and let the compound dry. After drying, they sand it smooth. Sometimes, they will repeat the process until they achieve a seamless surface.

8 9

Flooring Installing the flooring later in the renovation process saves your flooring surface from significant damage. Windows Install replacement windows.

www.phuketindex.com

53

Home & Décor

Feat u r e

10

Fine Carpentry Here’s where you introduce carpentry that doesn’t involve structural issues. Install baseboards, molding, trim around windows and doors, built-in elements (bookcases, breakfast nooks, etc.).

11

11. Interior Painting, Wallpaper, and Other Surface Finishes Painting interior walls, hanging wallpaper, painting molding and trim, staining and sealing trim: all of these detail-oriented surface finishes should be the last items you do indoors.

12

12. Siding, Gutters With the house mostly finished, it’s safe to put on siding. You don’t want to do this earlier (unless absolutely necessary) because doors and windows may get punched out, ruining the siding.

54

www.phuketindex.com

13

13. Major Auxiliary Building Last, do major auxiliary building projects like: • Additions • Sunrooms • Swimming pools

Large building projects like additions should come last. One view is that you do this last, so you don’t deplete all of your money and energy on projects not related to renovating the house itself. However, an alternate view is that you may want to build an addition very early in the process so that you don’t ruin any work you do in the main part of the house.

Whether used as a sofa in the lounge or an extra bed in the den or bedroom, the unusual design of this sofa bed makes it a striking piece of furniture. Made from banana leaf but getting its inner strength from a stainless steel frame, it provides comfort for either function. Popping in for coffee, or unexpectedly staying overnight, your guests will appreciate your taste.

The lamp bears the classic look of an old wooden tripod for a turn-of-the-century camera crafted in solid wood and accentuated with solid cast aluminum. This well appointed floor lamp features a machine-turned gear mechanism, a telescopic tripod base with adjustment so that it can stand on a table or the floor. Comes with a black lamp shade.

WIRE CHAIR Resin Lady Figurine This lady figurine with a meaningful gesture has been crafted using a relatively lightweight resin mix with a wonderfully authentic bronze and gold finish. This piece will make a stunning focal point in any home.

Intriguingly out of the ordinary, these wire chairs are eye-catching and definitely different. Nevertheless they are extremely strong, surprisingly comfortable, light and cool without cushions.

What a meaningful piece manifesting a woman face down on her knees. The contemporary design is in beautiful bronze tones, this sophisticated figure would make a stunning feature in a modern home, yet is sure to add something to any space.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket GM and the Transition

O

n the occasion of Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket changing hands, which was the talk of the town in the hotel industry a few months ago, when every spotlight seemed to be directed at this hotel for a while, Phuketindex could not miss the ‘train’. The following is a special interview with Peter Komposch, the hotel’s recent General Manager and the story of the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket. Peter Komposch, previously the General Manager of Half Moon hotel, in Rose Hall, Jamaica since 1999, replaced former General Manager Jan Verduyn who has been promoted to Managing Director of Dusit Thani LakeView Cairo in Egypt. At that time Peter brought his 27 years of experience from across the continents to lead the hotel through the domestic political turmoil and the recession of the tourism industry in Thailand. He is a native of Austria. Peter received his Associate Degree in Culinary Arts and Hotel

Administration from the Hotel and Catering School in Austria and later a Summer Certificate Program from Cornell University. Peter, how did your career path start? After graduating from a hotel college in my home country, I went to Canada to work for the Canadian Pacific Hotels and moved again to the Caribic where I met an American millionaire who offered me a job to become the Executive Chef on his 80 foot yacht and I sailed around the world for a year and half with his family. After coming back from this great trip, I went to Cornell University for two years. When I finished with Cornell, I began my job for Playboy Club Hotel in Chicago as Food & Beverages Director. I moved to many places later as well as I elevated myself up along the management line. Those included Hyatt Regency in Maui, Hawaii; El Dorado Park Hotel in Vienna, Austria; Highlands Inn in Carmel,

California; as Vice President and General Manager at The Princess Hotel Bermuda where I stayed for 10 years; and famous Half Moon hotel in Montego Bay where I spent 7 years before moving to Phuket, Thailand. Throughout my career, I not only met world famous celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Bob Marley, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Paul Newman, Michael Douglas, Dustin Hoffman, but also President Nixon, President George Bush, Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, Princess Diana, Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, King Fahd and the current Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton. For you, is it important for executives, who would like to get to the top in their career, to experience the bottom line first? Yes, I think you should get all the experience you can before becoming an executive so you know what you’re talking about. I have been in the hotel business for 30 years all over the world and the main thing I have learnt - the single most important factor - is how you deal with your employees and their performances, because this is what it takes to be a successful hotel; and also the guests should feel they are buying more than a room in the hotel for the night: they should feel they are buying a friendly, efficient and consistent product that makes them return time after time. No, because good leadership is being a disciplined professional with the drive and skills to lead and motivate the employees. So, in your opinion, what is the most important element for your success? Knowing the market, having a good communication between the staff and myself. Also have a high quality consistent product (value for money) and satisfy customers.

76

www.phuketindex.com

Having been in the industry for almost 30 years, what has experience taught you for the Dusit? It’s very interesting and at the same time, challenging. You have got to have great discipline and a strong work ethic and enjoy what you are doing. I have learnt that if you approach the staffs in the right way they will do their vey best for you. We aim to continually provide uplifting experiences for guests no matter what the purpose of their journey. The resort’ excellence in effective management, high-quality service, and sustainable conservation of the natural resources. In addition to its environmental-friendly operations, the Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is a genuine, five star quality home for those in search of the perfect escape; for all people that would like to experience the promise of ‘heaven on earth’. When you first came here in 2007, the political situation in Thailand began to heat up, but you still decided to come; why? What was your thought at that time? I always wanted to experience the Thai people and Asian culture. At this time there are problems almost anywhere in the world. So the political situation would not stop me from coming. During your time, you’ve seen many things happen with the hotel; can you share some with us and how about your plan for the future? Since December 2008 Thailand has had its fair share of political problems resulting in loss of occupancy and revenue; however we managed to keep all employees in their jobs.

Recreation & Rooms GM Talk

But despite all of this, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is still successful and continues to be awarded for our many “Green Globe and Green Leaf” initiatives so Phuket can be enjoyed by travelers and residents alike for years to come. We are just in the final stages of finishing a 64 million Baht room renovation and looking forward to a good year. As there are so many hotel properties to choose from in Laguna Phuket, each with their own character; so to get a clearer picture, what kind of different experience does Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket offer and who it has been designed for? We have a beautiful beach, a great product and remarkable staff. That is why we get a good number of returning guests year after year. In addition, we make sure the guests enjoy the best of Dusit Thani’s exulted Thai service and hospitality. The Thai touch plus our facilities are always evident from the moment they check in, until they board the limousine back to airport.

The resort is designed to attract various markets, couples, families, first time stayers to Thailand, long time visitors to Thailand and MICE (meetings, incentives, conference and exhibitions). We know that Laguna Resorts & Hotels sold the hotel to Dusit International PCL; will this bring any change to the hotel? The purchase of Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket by Dusit International PLC shows a commitment by Dusit to its homeland. You should know that in recent years Dusit has expanded overseas, exporting the now world famous Thai hospitality to Dubai, Cairo and Manila. This recent purchase of it hallmark property in the south of Thailand is a further commitment to the nation and the existing staff; and it will not bring many changes to this property. The now 23 year old resort is destined for a bright future with renewed strength.

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket is a genuine, five star quality home for those in search of the perfect escape; for all people that would like to experience the promise of ‘heaven on earth’.

Discover Dusit Experience in a Tropical Style

Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket, formerly known as Dusit Laguna Phuket, opened in 1987 after Laguna Resorts & Hotels Public Company Limited (formerly named Thai Wah Resorts Development Company Limited) used their four years of efforts to transform an abandoned tin mine to today’s paradisiacal holiday destination. Dusit Laguna Phuket was the first development and because of its advantaged position it is considered one of the finest locations within Laguna Phuket Complex; lying close to an 8km stretch of the white sandy beaches of Bangtao Bay and braced by vast connected lagoons, yet shaded by native casuarinas and coconut palms. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket provides 254 guest rooms in total including suites and villas; 28 Dusit Club Rooms, 48 Deluxe Lagoon View Rooms, 24 Deluxe Sea View Rooms, 113 Deluxe Ocean Front rooms, 2 Dusit Suites, 10 Landmark Suites, 1 Princess Suite, 22 Laguna Pool Villas and 6 Ocean Front Pool Villas. The resort is the perfect blending of neo-colonial architecture and Thai traditional elements. Natural wood, exotic tiles, unique textile, and antique carvings have been used throughout the resort for both exterior and interiors, to create a natural touch and praised national heritage allowing its guests to truly feel the tropical Thai ‘getaway’. The luxury resort not only offers well appointed rooms but also facilities and services to ‘colourise, appetize and mesmerize’ the stay. There are six outlets of restaurants and bars altogether, scattered within the resort to satisfy any taste palate, whether you are Italian aficionado, meat fan, or Thai cuisine admirer. At the resort, guests may enjoy spa treatments, working out, swimming, playing tennis and other outdoor activities within the resort and beyond operated by Laguna Excursions. Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket has

also built a strong reputation as one of the leading specialist hotels for MICE with its superb meeting facilities, and the new Laguna Phuket’s Latitude venue that can welcome over 1,000 guests in a theatre style setting. For over two decades, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket has had many chances to welcome some of the best known stars, politicians, celebs, VIPs such as the (current) 67th United States Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and groups such as those who participated in APEC summit 2003 and Thailand’s beauty pageant contestants. The hotel will celebrate its 23rd year anniversary this year with the completion of the refurbishment of its 69 deluxe rooms at the end of the year - good news for their returning guests and those who look for a refreshing experience with Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket.

GETTING UP CLOSE TO

‘North Phuket’ With Robert J. Lohrmann General Manager, JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa

Phuket Resort scene has much more to offer than the typical Hustle and Bustle area of the south-west coast. Patong, Kata, Karon.

Unlike the other parts of the island, Mai Khao Beach on the north-west coast, close to the airport, and a little bit deeper in Phang Nga Province, almost silently became the destinations for those who want relaxation and privacy - popular for niche markets for a perfect getaway. The big five luxury hotels on the north, including SALA Phuket Resort and Spa, Renaissance Phuket Resort & Spa, Anantara Phuket Villas, Aleenta Resort and Spa and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa, for several reasons, decided to join hands to form ‘The North Phuket Resorts Alliance’. Mr Robert Lohrmann, General Manager of JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa gave us some inside information on this Alliance:

Who is the ‘The North Phuket Resorts Marketing Initiative’ and what is it for? We (JW Marriott Phuket) and the other four resorts in Maikhao area have come together to form ‘The North Phuket Resorts Alliance’ to promote north Phuket as a special destination. A nice collection of high end resorts are telling everybody that we have a lot more to offer here. So we are working together to put north Phuket and Mai Khao Beach on the map with our unique selling points.

So what is actually going to happen in the north of Phuket at the moment? Good news for Phuket and travellers: “This year on December 3rd-5th 2010, we are going to have ‘The North Phuket Culinary Arts Festival’. Because other than the natural beauty you get in north Phuket and Maikhao Beach that you can also enjoy exceptional culinary experience all the resorts offer. “It is going to be three events over the King’s birthday weekend. The first event is at SALA and Renaissance;

they join together for the Friday night event. The next event on the Saturday night is going to be at Anantara - with Aleenta in Phang Nga coming down here - working together. And on Sunday, at JW Marriott, we are going to have ‘The Brunch of Your Life’, a family brunch. You can join either of the three individual events or you can surely buy a three day pass.” (The whole event will be running through 3-5th December, 2010 at different resorts. A single event pass is priced 1400 baht nett per person and full event pass is 3600 baht nett per person. for further details on each event, you can contact: events@northphuket.com)

Any update within your own hotel? “Last month on Wednesday 20 October 2010, we joined in collaboration with over 3400 Marriott hotels in 69 countries around the world to host the ‘World’s Largest Thai Dinner by Marriott’. It was a feast for the Guinness Book of World Records and was once again a good opportunity we proudly presented to promote an image of Thailand’s tourism industry. Thank you very much for those who honoured us at the historic event.” Apart from past and upcoming events, the GM also revealed to us that JW Marriott is doing an upgrade in response to information technology advancement and a major refurbishing program to better its facilities. “We are very much a family resort, so families with 2-3 kids are in the normal picture here. Other than the great kids club we have, kids (even parents) who are quite tech savvy these days, with their toys and tech gadgets that are brought along while they are travelling,

82

can now just plug in to our 42 inches LCD TV directly and immediately enjoy their own entertainment. The resort has wireless internet as a new feature as well - of course you can still have wired internet connection through the wall. The technology will keep you connected to the world wherever you are in the rooms.” “Other than the guestrooms, we also just re-launched our new lobby lounge that was refurbished earlier this year. We have a new Japanese restaurant since December last year and plan to renovate our conference facilities in the middle of next year. Again, with all new soft goods, new Audio Visual facilities, guests will have a enriching experience every time they come back - ever-changing, always amazing.”

Robert J. Lohrmann has been appointed as the General Manager of the JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa / MVCI (Marriott Vacation Club International) Phuket Beach Club and the recently opened Mai Khao Beach Club since the end of 2008. He is a native American who has been with Marriott for almost three decades. Prior to this, he has ever been at the JW Marriott Beijing, Ritz-Carlton Beijing, and other Marriott’s hotels in Asia and around the world.

he BMW-Sauber F1 team chose Phuket for a stop here after their race in the 2010 Formula 1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix which was during 24-26 September 2010. Phuketindex was delighted to pop down for a casual short interview with its smart Team Manager Beat Zehnter, at the new style beachfront hotel in Patong ‘B - Lay Tong Resort’, their chosen hotel.

So you have just come from the race in Singapore, how was it? Not very good. Unfortunately, we qualified where we should be normally in the Top Ten (with one car 10th the other 15th) but Kamui Kobayashi (their team’s Japanese driver) had an accident crashing into a barrier on lap 31. And their other driver Nick Heidfeld was ‘pushed out’ by Michael Schumacher on lap 37. So at the end, our drivers did not finish the race.

So the team is not satisfied with the outcome of the race in Singapore? You cannot be satisfied with two cars crashing (laughing). The target for us is definitely to beat Williams

86

www.phuketindex.com

[Williams-Cosworth] who before the race in Singapore had 20 points ahead of us. And our target to the end of season is to beat the Williams Team. But we didn’t finish the race and they got 9 points more. So now it’s a 29 points difference - a little bit difficult of a target.

We know that the Singapore Grand Prix is the only night race on the circuit. How is it different from the day races? Is it more difficult? The difference is that in Europe or everywhere else in the world, you get up at 6 o’clock in the morning, start work at 8 o’clock, practice, lunch,

Recreation & Rooms Special

BMW-Sauber Formula 1 Grand Prix racing team visited Patong another practice for qualifying or racing, and do maintenance on the cars in the evening but in Singapore you get up at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, start work at 4 o’clock and you finish work normally at 6 o’clock in the morning! So it’s different in terms of a daily schedule - completely unique but it’s interesting.

What and when is the next race? Next race is in Suzuka, Japan on Sunday 10 October 2010 (1pm Thai time), Kamui Kobayahi will drive at his home race. Nick will drive at his favourite circuit. We are very much looking forward to a good result. [Kamui Kobayashi put in a great performance in the F1 2010 Japanese Grand Prix. He eventually took seventh in Japan and claimed six championship points. While Nick Heidfeld also drove a very good race and took the chequered flag in eighth.]

party at night just nearby your hotel. You have everything in Phuket. That’s why. .. for us it is short. It’s the best island to go to from Singapore as it’s so close.

Where have you visited while staying here? To be honest, most of the time was relaxation for me here. But I have been scuba diving on a dive boat for two days. So we slept on the boat. We went to Phi Phi and other islands. Then we went to a very large and nice restaurant to enjoy fusion food.

Do you have any good stories about Phuket to share with us and our readers? Phuket is good for us. You can have everything. You can do whatever you want here. We will be looking forward to coming back.

Is the whole team here in Phuket?

If Phuket happens to have a circuit, what do you think?

The majority of the team is here. Some of the team members have to turn back to Switzerland. We have about five team members that make their own arrangements. Some have been to Samui Island and some chose to stay in Singapore. But the majority of the team is here.

In these days, it’s difficult for any country to get a formal long race circuit. You need a lot of money because the facilities and infrastructures for a model Formula 1 circuit are very expensive. You also need a lot of space. It’s like you have to build a second airport. It would be nice if you have one here, otherwise I don’t know if this is possible.

Have you ever been to Phuket before?

Thank you very much for your kind interview with us and of course for choosing Phuket. We wish you all the best while staying here and for the races to come.

For me personally this is the fourth time. I have been here with the team two years ago - as well as the Singapore race.

Why did you choose Phuket for a break? Phuket gives you a great variety of holiday activities, indeed. You can go scuba diving, you can rent a scooter and explore the island. While on the other hand, you can relax at the pool or you can have a

We want to avoid being subject to the political misgivings of Indonesia or of Thailand. So by being in both countries, we can manage the risks. I believe Thailand will have constructive results and we will pass through any political division. “I feel positive with what we are doing. Shopping & Mart Designer Talk

How did you start getting in fashion designing and what was your inspiration to choose it as a career path? It was at the age of 14, when I started to tailor dresses for my sister. She wore them to work and her friends happened to like them so they asked me to do some for them too. Then a friend of mine, who has now become an owner of a famous fashion boutique, made my career path clear. Back then he asked me to help him with the designs, so that he could run to many places with them to present and come back with the orders. His business went very well since he decided to open his own boutique. I then considered opening mine as well.

How old is Century 22? Century22 is about 10 years old. But actually I was working for another brand before that. ‘Roccoco’ began because of my sister but after the brand shifted their focus to domestic markets, I became involved with designing for the brand.

What is the characteristic of the brand? Roccoco offers feminine style clothes for a sweet girl, but Century22 has been designed to support those cool, chic girls in a colourful Bohemian style.

How do you see fashion trends nowadays?

I think there is no exact trend nowadays. Back 20 years ago when I just started, trends were more apparent but now people are becoming more and more self-esteemed, trying to create trends of their own. I think we just can’t tell that this is coming and that is not. It depends on what you choose to wear much more.

What is Century 22’s latest collection? We don’t have a collection here. As this is an island, the concept therefore is comfortable resort-style clothes. We don’t have to follow the fashion trends. It might be something to apply with our style but not much more than that to inspire the idea.

What is ‘Art of Fashion’ for you? Did you go to any fashion school? I didn’t go to any fashion school due to the fact that I never had any idea about fashion designing in my head before.

Then how did it all begin? At a house of a friend of mine, where I usually hung around at after school. There was a tailor there, so this was where I began learning to design and tailor.

‘Art of Fashion’ for me is to dress to suit one’s personality and body shape. People must know themselves, know how to dress, what is good to put on and what not. It is not necessary to follow the fashion trends and make yourself look awkward in clothes that are not for you. Powering your Multi-room Audio Systems

A

multi-room audio system is a great way to bring music into your house, while taking advantage of existing audio sources in your main room. You can create a multi-room system using traditional audio components, like a multi-room-capable receiver or amplifier, speakers to produce sound in each listening area, and other multi-room audio accessories. You can also find pre-matched multi-room systems from certain manufacturers

www.phuketindex.com

Multi-room audio systems can range in complexity from a relatively simple two-room setup (like a pair of outdoor speakers connected to a compatible home theater receiver), to much trickier house-wide setups. The way you power your multi-room system depends primarily upon how many rooms will be involved, and the type of listening you plan to do in each room.

• Multi-Zone / Single Source Systems Using a Receiver The simplest multi-zone system consists of a Speaker A/B switch that’s probably built into your stereo or home theater receiver. Install speaker wires between the receiver’s Speaker B terminals and two additional speakers in another room and you have a multi-zone audio system. It is also possible to connect the receiver to more speakers if you install a speaker switcher with a selector for each room. Multi-zone means multiple rooms and multi-source means the ability to listen to different sources in different rooms simultaneously.

Vehicle & Technology Feature

• Multi-Zone / Multi-Source Systems Using a Receiver If you own a newer multichannel home theater receiver you may be able to take advantage of its built-in multi-zone/multi-source features. Many receivers have multi-room outputs that can provide two-channel audio (and sometimes video) to as many as three separate zones. In some models, the audio output is speaker level so all that’s necessary is speaker wire and two speakers in each of the rooms; or the audio output is line level (unamplified signals), which will require line level cables between rooms plus an amplifier and two speakers.

• Advanced Multi-Zone / Multi-Source Control Systems A multi-zone control system is essentially a switch box that allows you to send a selected source (CD, FM radio, tape, etc.) to a specific room in your home. The control system can be a device that sends a line-level signal to an amplifier in the remote room(s), or it can have built-in amplifiers that send speaker level signals to the selected rooms(s). All of these types of systems allow you to listen to different sources simultaneously in different zones and are available in many configurations from four to as many as eight or more zones.

• Whole House Audio Networking If you are fortunate enough to own a home with network wiring already installed, you’ve already got a huge advantage. The same type of wiring used to interconnect a computer network system can distribute audio signals to multiple zones. This type of wiring is known as CAT-5e (Category FiveEnhanced) and is capable of distributing audio signals, though it cannot be used simultaneously for a computer network and audio distribution.

• Using a Computer LAN to Distribute Audio As mentioned, you can’t use the same CAT-5e cables as your computer network to distribute audio, but you can use your computer to distribute audio

• Wireless Music Adapter The simplest way to have wireless music distribution is to install a digital media adapter. This adapter, connected to your PC, sends a Wi-Fi signal to another adapter connected to your multi-zone home theater receiver, enabling you to listen to music in a remote zone that uses your computer as a source. over your CAT-5e network in the form of MP-3 digital audio files or Internet radio. This is a low-cost solution especially if you already have a computer network installed.

• Wireless Music Distribution If you don’t have a pre-wired home and retrofit wiring is too much to consider, there is another solution – go wireless. As wireless technology has improved, so have the options for wireless distribution of music. The most common wireless technology is Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity). No doubt you have heard the term used for the wireless networking of computers. The same technology is now finding its way into home audio.

and its delightful

departure lounges

T

his was the first time for me flying with Bangkok Airways and no excuse for my mate, this was her first time on board a plane. We were a little bit excited and also

looking forward to enjoying the departure lounges of Bangkok Airways – people convinced me so much that it’s nice and free. We are going to share our experience with the lounges for those who are looking for more information about the airline. Phuketindex hope it helps make your decision-making easier. Bangkok Airways’ Boutique departure lounges are available for all its passengers and in Phuket Airport it is situated at the end of the hall on your right hand side after you pass the security check. The lounge is not very big actually -in my estimation, it can serve about 20 passengers, so it’s quite cozy. There are some bakeries, hot coffee and cold drinks on offer in a corner. Apart from some soft furniture to relax on, they also provide three computers of course with internet access, plus newspapers and magazines for passengers to peruse.

On the way back, at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok we visited the Boutique lounge for a quick look to find that it was bigger with more seats and computers than Phuket’s. However, this is understandable when considering the volume the lounge is suppose to support. Here they have a wider range of edibles available and a kid’s room equipped with colourful fluffy toys and bean bags. We moved to the Blue Ribbon lounge which is exclusively reserved for business class passengers. It was obviously quieter with less users here. Yet offering a kind of superior experience, the lounge has lavishly furnished separate sitting areas, a small private area, a relaxing room with lounge chairs and massage chair, a refreshment bar – adorned by floral arrangements and lit up by crystal chandeliers. Green, blue and natural wood colours are dominant. At the Blue Ribbon lounge, passengers can ask for a menu to order more food than presented. The menu features some ready-to-eat food and a long list of hot & cold beverages including Bangkok Airways’ signature drink ‘rice leaf juice’ – a must-try refreshment.
