f, after visiting a spa, you feel refreshed, relaxed and fulfilled, then how about giving a good pampering to your favourite bags and shoes – accessories that have been your best friends for a while and that need a touch up and some TlC? Don’t they at least deserve the same treatment?

Bags, shoes and accessories are not merely objects: for many of us they have an intangible value. Some bags bring confidence to the holders; some might be the first they’ve ever owned or the first they gripped nervously in a first-time club experience. Or maybe those shoes were the first-ever gift you received from a loved one. You simply can’t put a price on accessories like these. In the past the only place for reliable fashion TlC was Bangkok or even abroad, now all that has changed.

All About QR Codes QR codes are all the rage right now, and even if you don’t know what they’re called, you’ve probably seen those barcode-type black and white digitised squares around on everything from cereal boxes to advertising posters, and in this magazine.

The generic type of QR Code (Quick Response) was actually created by a subdivision of Toyota in 1994 to track inventory. QR Codes are images that look like an optical illusion, but are actually more like barcodes that can be read by smart phones (Android phones, iPhones, etc.). These tags tell the phone to go to a certain web site or web page. As an example, the QR Code above will lead your smart phones to the Phuketindex.com website. To read a QR code, a person opens a scanning app, or QR reader, on a smartphone and aims the scanner at the QR code. The app functions as a combination camera and scanner. It scans the image and quickly links the user’s smartphone user to the site.

46

www.phuketindex.com

Many free QR code reading apps are available for downloading on iPhone and Android smartphones as well as BlackBerry phones. On such app for iPhones is called QR Reader for iPhone. The app is also available for Android. When you see a code that you want to “read,” simply open the app on your phone, point your phone at the image, and then adjust the camera’s position until the QR code is within the bracketed corners. Once QR Reader frames the image inside the brackets, the app automatically scans it and connects your phone to the information.

Features - Technology

Steps to scanning a code

Download App from Store

Open your App reader

You’ve arrived

Suggested Apps

Android Phones

iPhone and iPod Touch

Windows Phone

Visit the Google Play Store and search QR Code Reader. There are a number of free QR Code reading apps available to you such as QR Code Reader & QR Droid Code Scanner which allows you to digitally share just about anything. There are also QR & Barcode Scanner apps which will read not only QR codes but regular bar codes as well.

There are hundreds of QR code scanners for iPhone so it almost seems silly to highlight one above the rest, but if we suggest one Scan is great because as soon as you launch it, it’s immediately in scanning mode, and it can pick up a code within seconds.

Windows phone owners will find a great solution in upCode. This application, available in the Ovi Store, will quickly scan your QR code and send you to the destination with ease. It’s available for all Nokia smartphones with a camera.

For a free alternative, again check out the Google Play Store or the iTunes App Store.

There are viruses for smartphones just like there are for computers, so it is always important to scan smart, just like going to trusted web sites from your computer. The QR code itself cannot contain a virus, but the web site it takes you to certainly can. Make sure the codes you scan are from a trusted source.

Penang Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion

B

uilt in the 1880s, this famous indigo-blue Chinese Courtyard House in Georgetown was the residence of Cheong Fatt Tze, a prominent Chinese figure in the newly established Penang Straits Settlement during the 19th century. The mansion was built by master craftsmen brought in especially from China, who used their skills to fashion the mansion with 38 rooms, 5 granite-paved courtyards, 7 staircases and 220 windows. Rescued from the perils of development in the 1990s by a small group of Heritage preservationists led by Laurence Loh, the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion possesses splendid

Chinese timber carvings, Gothic louvre windows, russet brick walls and porcelain cut & paste decorative shard works, art nouveau stained glass panels, Stoke-on-Trent floor tiles and Scottish cast iron work. Its layout is based on feng-shui principles, and filled with rare a collection of sculptures, carvings, tapestries and other antiques. In 2000, the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion received the inaugural Unesco Asia-Pacific Heritage Conservation Award, selected as the ‘Most Excellent Project’ in the Asia Pacific Rim following its RM7.6 milllion restoration works.

Khoo Kongsi

W

hen the first immigrants from the Hokkien province of China arrived in Penang, one of the first things they set out to do was build one of the most magnificent clan houses in Penang. Work began on the clan house in the 1890’s which resulted in what was said to be a palace which rivalled that of the Emperor of China. As the story goes, this extravagance incurred the wrath of the Gods and on the first night of the clan house’s completion, an unexplainable fire broke out and burnt the house down! It wasn’t until 1902 that the current clan house began construction. One of five clan houses still standing in Georgetown, the Khoo Kongsi clan house takes on a remarkable resemblance to a mini clan village. One of the grandest clan houses in Penang, the Khoo Kongsi features tall thin columns supporting a gently sloping, red tiled roof, topped with carvings of dragons, phoenixes, mythical animals and various scenes from popular Chinese legends.

The clan house also has a grand hall adorned with resplendent and intricate carvings and richly ornamented pillars which are said to have been crafted by master craftsmen from China. Other major Hokkien clan houses that can be found in Penang are the Cheah Kongsi, Yeah Kongsi, Lim Kongsi and Tan Kongsi.

Kuan Yin Temple

(Goddess of Mercy Temple)

T

he Kuan Yin Temple was built in the 1800s by early Chinese settlers of the Hokkien and Cantonese communities. The temple was originally named Kong Hock Keong temple (Cantonese-Hokkien Temple) and was once used not only for religious but also for social functions within the Chinese community. However, the temple lost some of its importance when the current Chinese Town Hall was constructed in the 1880s. The Goddess of Mercy Temple, or Kuan Yin Temple, is the first temple ever built in Georgetown, Penang, by Chinese settlers. The temple honours Kuan Yin, a devout Buddhist who was said to have attained the coveted state of Nirvana but had chosen instead to remain on earth in order to provide guidance and help to those who are themselves striving to reach Nirvana. The temple interior is usually filled with the scent of sandalwood incense, burnt by devotees who visit the temple to pray and seek guidance from Kuan Yin. The temple also honours Ma Chor Poh, the patron saint of seafarers, who was highly regarded by the Chinese settlers, many of whom had travelled great distances, crossing the seas from China to Penang. Enjoy the temple’s many beautiful features like the dragon-entwined pillars, carved from a type of green stone, which support the temple’s high roof. Also look for the statue of Kuan Yin, located in an inner chamber, which depicts a woman with 18 arms, who has a countenance which exudes inner peace and worldly contentment.

P

huket has a long history of multiracial culture and there are many examples of this to be found in various spots around the island, and there is one annual event that really brings out the best of the cultures that has made Phuket what it is today. Thalang Road is known as Phuket’s ‘historical road’ and is located in Phuket City Municipality. It was formerly the trading center of Phuket and most of the houses located along this road were owned by wealthy Phuket people. The houses were built in Sino-Portuguese styles which reflect unique combinations between Chinese and Portuguese architectures. It is also a good example of how much of a multicultural community the island became since native Thais, Chinese, Muslims, Indians, and Europeans started living together peacefully on the same road. Soi Rommanee, from Phuket historical records, Soi Rommanee was known as the alley where everyone knew that it was a street brothel. That’s why it was called ‘Rommanee’ (Rommanee in Thai is happiness).
