Wilaiporn Pitimanaaree When talking about Central Festival Phuket, people automatically think about a shopping paradise, the new centre of Phuket’s community, the trend setter, or they might have their own word for it. To get to this level of success, Central Festival Phuket was once and is now again led by Wilaiporn Pitimanaaree or ‘Maew’, the General Manager who returned and pledged to make it a colourful destination. Let’s hear and read what she thinks:
Where is the place you belong? I was born, raised up and got a bachelor degree from Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, before I decided to continue with an MBA at College of Notre Dame in US. I came back and began my career life with the world-famous advertising agency, Ogilvy & Mather Ltd. in their Thai office. This was followed by AT&T, Coca-Cola (Thailand), and L’Oréal Paris all of which were very good companies to accumulate working experience at. I stepped into the retail business with Thailand’s renowned retail property development and management firms, Central Pattana and Central Retail Corporation, which thereafter offered me an opportunity to come to Phuket and set up Central Festival Phuket in 2004. As I loved challenges but was still in love with Phuket, I then shifted track to learn things in the luxury market by spending 3 years as a Marketing Director at Royal Phuket Marina. Then last year, I finally came back to Central Festival Phuket since I feel this is a place where I belong.
What is Central Festival Phuket to you? We intended to make Central Festival Phuket become the biggest shopping paradise in the south. We put heavy efforts into bringing together a wide selection of the world’s leading fashion brands, vast variety of foods from around the world, and many kinds of entertainment into one exciting package for Phuketians & tourists to enjoy all in one place. Considering the current situation, I think we have reached satisfying

levels of achievement and have got a little bit closer to what we aim to be “the centre of the community”. Alongside the community, Central Festival Phuket also passed difficult times after the tsunami. But I think it was a test we got through and it was another step we had to take to become a leader in what we do.
What new developments are going to happen? For the 6th year anniversary, we will use this opportunity to re-launch our shopping center. With new decoration, renovation and expansion, plus the opening of the new zone, the community can expect a higher level of satisfaction. The highlight will be our new ‘Kids & Family’ zone, the recently opened 4th floor of Central Department Store and the soon coming June, “CFP Eduplanet” which occupies over a thousand square metres on the Parking 1 area next to Office Depot, featuring a selection of skill enhancement academies for all children. As well, you will see a 30-40% larger Tops Supermarket extended to be “Food Hall”, a first class supermarket that provides customers a broader range of imported food from around the world. We will make full use of our space so that it can support more activities we plan to organise. Whether it be a motor show, fashion show, or art exhibition etc., these will happen at least once in a month. Like fashion, we continually develop ourselves, to ensure that the number of years passed means better experience too.
Did working hard make you who you are today? From the moment I chose to leave Bangkok for the new challenge, I have to admit that I felt anxious and was on edge too. I knew no one here but my task, which was assigned by boss, was to grab big attention from every market segment in

Phuket. Everyone had to notice it and our opening, which was scheduled in September 2004, had to become talk of the town. To be honest, that was not easy. However, the difficult mission was the way to prove my skills, competency and leadership. I had to dedicate myself and used every aspect of knowledge that I have gained through previous studies, work and life experiences to make it perfect. Because there were a lot of details to work on, to open a shopping complex, I was so happy that we got an over-expected positive feedback with the opening. I look back and found my previous thoughts about my career life were wrong. I had thought that it was because I had no luck for always being assigned big and tough tasks. But now I know that I was very lucky to have them as a stage to prove myself. Central Festival Phuket, for me as an executive, is a masterpiece and that for sure brings me much pride.
What is your self perception? I will determine myself as a working woman. Being an executive for such a large organisation, to lead and monitor many people, I prefer a working atmosphere that is full and reaches the level of creativity, respectfulness and communication among the team. I believe that working and problem solving are better when done cooperatively and “‘none’ of us is as good as ‘all’ of us”. For my personal life, I’m kind of lively, sociable and a fashion lover. I’m also a positive thinker who loves challenges, excitement and adrenaline. That is what I am.

Saroch Tantipattanaseri H is first intention was to stay in Phuket for just a few months, but life on the island for Saroch Tantipattanaseri, Managing Director of ‘Sea Sun Sand Resort’, a moderate size resort in Patong, is now reaching 30 years here. What made a successful architect leave his place of origin and lay his future on this island? Let’s find out the answer together, in how this architect–executive, designs and directs his life.

How was the beginning for Saroch Tantipipattanaseri? I’m a Bangkok native. I earned a Bachelor’s Degree in architecture from Chulalongkorn University and spent many years after the graduation with Thailand’s major construction, trading and manufacturing group Italian-Thai Development PCL. One day when I was assigned a task in Phuket and had been working here for a period of time, I saw a business opportunity, as at that time Phuket was still short of a professional architecture company. After that my colleagues and I started up our own company named Project Management Consultants (PMC) which serves customers
for architecture & interior design, landscape work, consulting and construction, with the aim to bring professionalism into all the work. What makes PMC different? It’s the professionalism. Our job does not stop at the design on paper but we go beyond. We provide feasibility advice for the customers on matters that include budget management, marketing, investment and risk assessment. The reason why we pay attention to every process and focus so much on the design is because, for me, designing is like laying the foundation which needs to be strong for the frame and the building to be set and rise securely when completed. Our past projects range from hotels to residential projects. How did Sea Sun Sand Resort happen?
I can’t deny that the hotel business was very hot in Phuket. Anyone would want to invest in this market. At first, we were just an architectural company which could expect income only in the low season when the investors liked to construct or

renovate to support the next high season. To cope with the vacuum situation, we then thought about opening up our own hotel. That is the origin of Sea Sun Sand Resort in the prime location of Patong. At that time, Sea Sun Sand Resort’s concept was different from other hotels in Patong, which mostly focused on high buildings with luxurious design. We decided to go with a compact 78-room hotel that can be in harmony with the natural surroundings. We use plants to fill up what Patong always misses and we value good service the most, to keep occupancy high even in low season and to keep our guests returning again and gain. Is it true that another Sea Sun Sand Resort project is coming up? Yes, it is. As our existing Sea Sun San Resort at the present cannot sufficiently meet the consistently high demand for rooms anymore, we therefore ended up with a solution to expand the resort to another location on Prabaramee Road. Close to completion, the new phase of Sea Sun Sand comprises low-rise buildings that accommodate a number of guestrooms, hotel facilities and 54-unit apartments with rental management service and guaranteed rental returns for investors. All is coming with a more modern look but still sticking to easy access to the beach, privacy and comfort. In the designer role, what do you achieve? Ethics is what our company keeps following for a long time. We cannot only think about how ‘to gain’ but we have to think about how ‘to give’ as well. This is what I’m trying to cultivate in my subordinates and young generation. Because of that principle, our company can still stand in the industry for over a decade. In addition, in my opinion, to pass on knowledge and to train the new generation is very important. While they need both ‘knowledge’ and ‘opportunity’ and we have ability to give that, why not go for it? In the role of executive, how do you take care of your staff? For the hotel, service is the key. And I think, to deliver a good service, staff need to be treated well too. I take care of them like they are part of my family. We need to know their demands, satisfy & respect each other, plus allow them

to think and be themselves. Everyone is their own boss. I strongly believe this is an effective way of human resource management for hotels. Working environments that are full of conflict or fault-finding will not lead to good service and cannot build loyalty in any organization. What is your real identity? I may have some aspects that people classify as an ‘oldie’. While I like to go to a temple, spend some time with myself in a quiet place, I’m still attracted to innovations or cutting-edge technology which is more likely to be a character of the new blood. Definitely, personal lifestyle can indicate identity of each person. But actually, what people think about you is not as important as how you perceive yourself. I don’t care what people think of me. Having a chance ‘to give’, being who I am now, is enough for me. What do happiness and success mean to you? I don’t think they mean so much. Expectation in life for me is what make us busy and suffer. Happiness depends on your way of thinking and doing. For success in working life, I just want to keep doing what I have been, to make it better as I think a good foundation makes life easier. Finally, as a hotel business operator, I would like to ask investors and entrepreneurs in Phuket to be more environmentally conscious. The natural environment doesn’t deserve to be destroyed for personal gain. We’d better help together, to save it for the benefit of the whole world.

Wax Treatment
For those spa goers or beauty-loving ladies, ‘Paraffin Wax Treatment’ is nothing new. But for those who are not, the term may not be in your dictionary and may make you puzzled. This should help: What is Paraffin wax treatment? Paraffin wax treatment is a kind of spa treatment that is most often applied to the hands and feet as a part of manicures and pedicures. Paraffin wax (or simply ‘paraffin’), which is the essential substance used for treatment, is unlike spa wax used for hair removal. It is a softer wax mostly white, odorless and tasteless, with a typical melting point between about 47 °C and 64 °C which is lower than normal temperature.
How does paraffin wax treatment benefit you? When it melts and gets warmer, the paraffin wax will help moisturize dry and chapped skin making it soft and smooth. It is also helpful for people with arthritic problems, relieving joint pain and muscular aces. Calming scented oils such as lavender, rose, orange etc. are often added to the wax for the aroma-therapeutic effect.

What will the treatment look like? Spa specialists or beauticians will melt blocks of paraffin wax in a double boiler while preparing your hands and/or feet by washing and drying. They will test if the wax has the right temperature for you. When ready, the specialists will have your hands or feet gently and slowly dipped into the warm melted paraffin wax – from your fingers to your wrists, from your toes to your ankles, and hold for just an instant. They allow the wax to set and form a thin layer, then dip repeatedly until you have several layers built up. After that, the coated part will be wrapped with a plastic liner, covered with terrycloth mitts, booties or blanket and left to ‘soak’ in the layer of wax for at least 20 minutes. Now you can take your time, relax yourself with a nice magazine, some good music or a peaceful nap, waiting for the hardening wax to peel off and find your skin left hydrated, smooth and soft. You can do paraffin wax treatment by yourself at home with a home wax kit available in beauty supply shops. But please note that the double boiler is necessary for safety purposes; while those with dermatitis, burns, skin rashes, open wounds and any such skin condition should avoid paraffin wax treatment. However, for a better experience of being pampered, you can also have the treatment at a spa or salon.

Why do you think Phuket Pearl was selected? I think it’s simply because our practices are corresponding to their requirements. Though we are just a small business, we are able to carry it all from the very beginning to the final stage ourselves. We have our own farm. We use local designers. We find market and do marketing ourselves. You might say that we’ve come this far by folk wisdom and that, I believe, is the real reason that made us win the judge’s heart.
The local company recently won “Award of Excellence” from 2nd Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) National Awards 2009 Business Type: Accessory /Jewelry organised by the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises Promotion (OSMEP). The following short interview with Mr. Jitti Indhrachareon, Managing Director of Phuket Pearl Industry Co., Ltd. may help you get a clearer picture of what they have done and what they are doing: Please tell us about the award? This award is given to the SMEs that reached the desired standards of performance excellence called ‘Thailand Quality Award’ (TQA) – the National Quality Award which uses the same criteria as the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA), a US-developed standard used by over 70 countries around the world. The objectives are to improve Thai SMEs organizational performance and competitiveness. We at Phuket Pearl were the only entrepreneurs from Phuket

Besides a trophy and a certificate, what more can you get from the award? It was a good decision to participate in this project. The committee had thoroughly evaluated us in many aspects and that allowed us to know ourselves better. We realized what our strengths were and what should be improved. Of course, it also brings pride to everyone in the team. What is Phuket Pearl’s direction after this? We always keep improving ourselves. I’m confident that with our knowledge and our experience, we can make Phuket’s pearl widely recognized as a quality product on the international stage. What we are focusing the most on now is to create awareness of the product’s value that the industry has underemphasized. I want people to see how much effort and how many procedures it takes to make a fine pearl. If we achieve this, I believe the pearl of Phuket is more likely to have a bright future.

ooror Somany Steppe’s childhood was like many other Thais, whose girls normally start to learn cooking when they are very young, like 9-10 years old or even less. It’s a norm for Thai people. She was raised up among cooking aficionados and spent a lot of time in her mom’s kitchen learning authentic recipes from her elder sister and mother. Now she has become the spearhead of ‘Blue Elephant’, a world leading brand for Thai restaurants that roots the national cuisine in quite a lot of foreigners’ hearts. The classic Chinpracha Mansion, built in the reign of King Rama V, is part of Phuket’s priceless architectural heritage, and has recently been renovated and refurbished by Blue Elephant International to host its 13th restaurant here in Phuket. Phuketindex.com takes this opportunity to let you get to know this genuine Thai restaurant and real Thai Chef Nooror Somany Steppe through the following 13 questions & answers:
How was your childhood? I was born in Chachengsao province and grew up among a family that loves to cook authentic traditional Thai cuisine. The first thing that I learnt was to pound the curry pastes which was part of our family business at that time. We sold them at the nearby fresh market. (Blue Elephant’s curry pastes are now exported to over 30 countries around the world). I began to enjoy cooking and gradually I found myself falling into it more & more ever since. That’s the origin of my passion and how I started to learn cooking techniques of Thai cuisine.
What is Thai cuisine’s charm? Thai food offers an excellent variety of flavors and tastes. Each dish has a balanced mix of hot, sour, salty and sweet. Playing an important role in most Thai dishes are Thai herbs such as ginger, lemon grass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, chili, tamarind,
sweet basil leaves, etc. that give Thai food unique flavors and taste. Apart from that, Thai herbs are also good for health.
How did Blue Elephant start? When I was 16, influenced by my brother, I moved to Brussels, Belgium where he was studying Hotel Management at that time. I met Karl Steppe there and married him a few years later. Then in 1980, Mr. Somchai Wayno and Mr. Somboon Insusri, our good friends, convinced us to open a Thai restaurant in Brussels. We therefore became a business partner operating the first Blue Elephant which will celebrate its 30th Anniversary this year. Now we have a total of 13 branches located in many destinations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia i.e. Brussels, London, Copenhagen, Paris, Lyon, Dubai, Moscow, Beirut, Kuwait, Malta, Bangkok, Jakarta and last but not least Phuket.

“As an artist, I will continue doing this, which is also what I love. Promoting Thailand’s gastronomy to the world makes me happy and gives meaning to my life as well.” What was your reason for choosing Chinpracha Mansion? Phuket is always one of the most popular tourist destinations, while Chinpracha Mansion represents a somewhat classic culture. Its elegance, interesting background, yet good location in Phuket old town can add extras to any dining experience. These factors fit well with what Blue Elephant is looking for to accentuate Thai-ness through architecture, design and atmosphere. We thus decided to revive the building.
What is your expectation for Phuket? Firstly, I have to tell you that I love Phuket. The island is colourful and always exciting. The city especially, in my opinion, looks different from the past few years. It looks like they have some more interesting things that can attract tourists to stay a bit longer. Phuket people are very friendly. I feel safe and warm every time I visit. My wish is to hear that Phuket locals and tourists have

cook delicately and pay attention to every detail. For our success, I would praise the goodness of Thai cuisine.
How is the Steppes’ family’s support? Karl Steppe, my husband, will take care of the administration, about managing financial concerns - things I have no idea about it. I take the cooking part. Sandra, my eldest daughter, helps us look after our Bangkok branch. Kim, my second son, is here in Phuket to set up and operate the new branch. Chris, our youngest son, is studying in Brussels. In terms of business, we share, support and respect each other.
What is your ‘One Fine Day’? When I’m free from work, I probably spend my leisure time listening to some good music, shopping, travelling, going to a spa or dining. I’m a kind of easy-going and an independent person so I prefer causality rather than formality.
What is your favourite dish? My favourite dish is ‘Nam Prik Pla Tu’ (Fried Mackerel with Shrimp Paste), a classic dish for Thai people. A fresh-baked croissant is enough for me to start the day or if I want something more than Thai cuisine, I have steak, French fries and fresh mayonnaise.
What is your principle for life? I don’t think we have to be too serious about life. I do not expect much in anything, to avoid putting too much pressure on myself. Instead, I will be focusing on what I am doing and I have to do. As an artist, I will continue doing this, which is also what I love. Promoting Thailand’s gastronomy to the world makes me happy and gives meaning to my life as well.
What is your goal? I’ve come this far pursuing my dream - that is to make Thai cuisine renowned among the international audience and now with what we have achieved, I’m so happy. For the next step I would take - to fulfill my passion - I will be more than happy to see Thai cuisine as a composition for a gala dinner or a luxury banquet since I believe it has an unquestionable potential to be there. I’m confident that with a creative twist, Thai cuisine can be everyone’s favourite for such an occasion.
What is your pride? I had a chance several times to cook for the royal family. Looking back, it was when we just opened Blue Elephant in Bangkok - less than two weeks later I was called to cook for HRH Princess Galyani Vadhana. I was very proud that my cooking skills have been recognized at a high level. Another is being the only Thai chef - and one of the few female chefs - to win the Hospitality Asia Platinum Award (HAPA) 2008-2010.

I believe that people are satisfied and smile when we serve them services that cover their needs. Consequently, Phuket City Municipality provides various services, such as a health security project cooperating with local hospitals and medical clinics. We look after people since they were born and later provide them education with our six schools operating from kindergarten to high school level. The schools’ curriculum has emphasis on IT, foreign languages, sport, arts and culture. Now, there are lots of manifest outputs of our educational policy: they are quality human resources with capability and good health. I believe that they will be the key factors to move Phuket City forward sustainably. Besides, we efficiently manage the province’s main incinerator, located in Phuket city area, in order to avoid side effects that may affect people living nearby the area. The increasing amount of rubbish in Phuket leads us to construct a second incinerator and we expect that it will be completed soon. As you can see, now there are more parks and green areas in Phuket city. We develop the parks as the recreational areas where people can relax and play sport. The most popular park in town is Sapan Hin. We are developing the park under the ‘Sea in Town’ concept. It’s not only the city park, but it’s also the city sports center.

When parents are busy working, the elders are the best primary teachers in the family, who teach children ancestral knowledge and morals and tell them to be away from bad things such as drugs. Children will be the important power to move our society forward; therefore, we emphasize the policy to enhance primary education standard and provide children with an opportunity to study in their home areas. Even though we cannot stop the growth of business in our area, we can take advantage from it in the right way, together with preserving our original lifestyles.
