The Wiener WerkstŠtte Model Book page for the present lot, on file at the MAK Vienna, records the initial provenances of twelve of the eighteen boxes produced. In addition to orders placed by the WerkstŠtte office in Vienna and its branch in Karlsbad, Germany, other boxes were purchased by prominent supporters of the firm including co-founder Fritz Waerndorfer and the Hirschwald Family, owners of a rare sconce (Lot 16) also in hammered silver-plated alpaca.

The square, the grid, the framed plane restrict space but when repeated suggest endless recurrence and limitless space. Josef HoffmannÕs canny use of concentric squares in the decoration for Mileva and Alfred RollerÕs drawing room (above) rebuffs the viewer but conversely draws him forward. Regardless

Painter, costume designer and set decorator, Alfred Roller no doubt understood the dramatic effects of animated space. He taught with Hoffmann at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Vienna. Prior to that, both men were founding members of the Vienna Secession, an association of artists intent on overthrowing the static art forms of the past.

The present pair of lamps, like Austrian bellflowers on curled stems, belonged to Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill, a former student of Josef Hoffmann at ViennaÕs Kunstgewerbeschule. Wimmer, as he was known, joined the Wiener WerkstŠtte in 1907 following the departure of its co-founder Koloman Moser.

Until his own emigration to America in 1922, Wimmer championed the WerkstŠtteÕs cardinal idea: art must pervade daily life. Although a trained architect, Wimmer designed textiles, jewelry, furniture, and utensils, in

addition to sets and costumes for the Cabaret Fledermaus, an important

K.I. 12111/10, model no. 228/1.

WerkstŠtte commission. In later years he painted. The WerkstŠtteÕs vision was a total one; no corner of the house lay outside its reach. A conundrum soon presented itself: the owners of the house werenÕt cut from the same clothÑ how to account for their calamitous costumes? In 1910 Wimmer opened the WerkstŠtte fashion department, a fitting expansion.

Between 1898 and 1908, at the height of Art Nouveau, Loetz produced its signature Phänomen iridescent glass. The present lot bears silver-yellow dots and trailing threads, known as ÒStreifen und Flecken,Ó a decoration developed by Koloman Moser in 1900. Robert Holubetz, one of MoserÕs students at the Kunstgewerbeschule, Vienna, designed the present form in collaboration with his professor on the occasion of the 8th Wiener Secession exhibition held that same year.

Josef HoffmannÕs decoration for the present vase comprises cordate leaves and bellflowers held within a strict geometric ground. Hard shapes against soft, HoffmannÕs motif hints at the Wiener WerkstŠtteÕs many contradictions: checkerboards versus blossoms; gold versus clay. Cased flowers bloomed often at the WerkstŠtte; examples include a gold and opal pendant by Eduard Josef Wimmer-Wisgrill (1911); a ceramic jar by Dagobert Peche (1912); MŠda PrimavesiÕs gold and ivory bracelet designed by Hoffmann (1914); and, much earlier, in the WerkstŠtteÕs own monogram Ñ the rose mark.

Marcel Kammerer studied with architect Otto Wagner at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna from 1898 to 1901. Following his graduation, Kammerer joined his professorÕs architectural practice, where he remained from 1902 to 1910, and where he assisted with two of the firmÕs most significant commissions: the dispatch bureau of the newspaper Die Zeit and the …sterreichische Postsparkasse, a postal savings bank. Both commissions included important bentwood furniture by Wagner. During his tenure at the firm, Kammerer designed several of his own bentwood models for manufacturer Gebruder Thšnet. A simplified version of the present tableÑwith a laminated wood top and without aluminum fittingsÑappears as Model no. 40 in ThonetÕs 1907 supplement to its earlier 1904 catalogue. Given its elaborate and no doubt expensive details, the present configuration never went into mass production and is one of only two known examples.

The Wiener WerkstŠtte model book page for the present lot, 1905Ð1912

The Wiener WerkstŠtte Model Book page for the present lot, registered at the MAK Vienna, lists two known examples of this pendant designed by Koloman Moser. The first, later illustrated in a 1906 issue of Hohe Warte, was executed in March 1905 on the occasion of the Secession exhibition in Berlin that year. The Model Book attests to a second example, the present lot, having been produced in 1912. Stylized flowers and foliate motifs figure prominently in the jewelry of the Wiener WerkstŠtte and in nearly every other area of its production, including textiles, glass, and graphics. Lest nature run wild, the artists of the Wiener WerkstŠtte kept petals and vines in checkÑliterally. In a brooch designed by Josef Hoffmann, illustrated on page 102 of the Neue GalerieÕs Wiener WerkstŠtte Jewelry, gilt silver bellflowers push against a rectangular frame; they canÕt grow farther. Illustrated in the same catalogue, Koloman MoserÕs pendant hangs freely. Although supported by two circular stems at top and bottom, his gold seed pods grow outside any frame. One bears the inscription Ò21. Mai 1912ÓÑa memorable day no doubt. Rather than abstract their form, Moser rendered each pod with lucidity and vigor, a fitting celebration of life, be it due day, birthday, or engagement. The same model as published in

The protruding console of the present hall stand, the only known example in this configuration, relates directly to Lot 33 and to a similar table and armchair illustrated in a 1905 issue of Das Interieur, a monthly Viennese architectural journal. In addition, it bears striking similarities to the Kammerer plant stand gifted by Max Palevsky to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Like those works, the present lot comprises solid bent beechwood, cast aluminum fittings, and a glass top. Its elaborate details would have prevented it from entering mass production by GebrŸder Thonet, where it was produced.
