Expand Your Horizons with Smithsonian Student Travel At a time when quality and trust in travel is more important than ever, Smithsonian Student Travel is excited to offer a new selection of immersive experiences for students completing 8th through 12th grades. With destinations from Alaska and Iceland to Ecuador and the Galápagos, these programs provide memorable and enriching experiences to high school students looking to better understand and celebrate the world. Informed by Smithsonian’s vast knowledge and resources built over 175 years, Smithsonian Student Travel programs have been crafted around themes that are ideal for students curious to explore a new topic or interest, or to dig deeper into one that is already a passion. Each program focuses on a unique theme that Smithsonian has covered over the years in its museums, research, and media, ranging from climate change or wildlife conservation to aerospace or race and social justice. A Smithsonian Student Travel Expert joins each trip to share their insights, knowledge, and passion about the destination and themes. Students will gain a deeper understanding of the history, culture, cuisine, language, and environment of a destination through hands-on activities with fellow students. Knowledgeable trip leaders make these experiences engaging and fun, and provide a level of insight only Smithsonian can offer. Within a structured environment, students take ownership over their experience while working on independent projects of their choosing. By the end of a program, participants are more closely engaged with a place, allowing them the opportunity to become better global citizens and advocates for the future.

Smithsonian Student Travel Experts Smithsonian Student Travel Experts join every journey for a portion of the itinerary. Our experts are professionals in their field and are able to tie in their knowledge and experiences with the themes of the program. They are welcoming, engaging, and accessible, and provide students with unique insights in a way that only Smithsonian is able to offer. During their time with the group, they participate in all activities and meals, offering students opportunities to engage in meaningful ways. Our experts work in museums, conduct experiments, collect data, and organize community gardens. They are curators, educators, researchers, conservationists, and historians. Meet a few of the experts that will join you in summer 2022. 1. Stephanie Grocke – Geologist
Stephanie Grocke served as a postdoctoral scholar at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, and as a Fulbright-NSF Arctic research fellow at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík, where she investigated the gas emissions from the 2014–2015 Bardarbunga eruption. Her research explores the most explosive volcanism on Earth: “supereruptions,” which have the potential to cause devastating hazards and changes to global climate. Stephanie’s research aims to identify the magmatic processes that result in this style of volcanism. Stephanie will be joining our student journey in Iceland. 2. Sarah Baitzel – Archaeologist
Sarah Baitzel is an archaeologist investigating the ritual and social lives of pre-Hispanic Andean peoples. Her research and teaching encompass anthropological archaeology, bioarchaeology, complex societies, and Andean South America. Sarah has published numerous articles in scientific journals throughout the Americas, with a particular focus on Andean textiles, burial rituals, and childhood and social life. Sarah will be joining our student journey in Ecuador & the Galápagos. 3. Ahmad Ward – Civil Rights Historian
Ahmad Ward is the Executive Director for the Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park in South Carolina, whose mission is to preserve, promote, and honor Mitchelville—the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States. He is also a board member of the Association of African American Museums, and a former member of the Smithsonian Affiliates Advisory Board. Ahmad possesses a strong understanding of storytelling and recognizes the importance of technology in interpretation. Ahmad will be joining our student journey in Washington, D.C. & Alabama. 1.

Visit a biological research station run by the Sea Turtle Conservancy, head to a field station in the tropical forest and help collect data, and collaborate on reforestation projects.
On the Big Island of Hawai’i, meet with Native Hawaiians to hear their stories of growing up on the island and learn phrases in the Hawaiian language. Peer over the edge of the Kilauea caldera, the most active and most researched volcano in the world. Interview park rangers and participate in conservation-focused projects.
