30TH BIRTHDAY EDITION 1990 - 2020

CIO/ CHARITY NO: 1158735

WE ARE PEOPLE EXPRESS! YOU CAN FIND US IN SOUTH DERBYSHIRE, ON THE SITE OF SHARPE’S POTTERY MUSEUM IN SWADLINCOTE. SOUTH DERBYSHIRE

The District is relatively new, set between Burton-upon-Trent, Derby and Ashby de la Zouch. It was formed in 1976, but the main Market Town, Swadlincote, is listed in the Doomsday Book in 1086. The area is mostly rural and although the mining industries have been lost, it has been transformed through major regeneration projects, including The National Forest.

‘AY UP ME DUCK’ BY CREATIVE CHRYSANTHEMUM GROUP THIS IS HOW WE SAY ‘HELLO’ IN SOUTH DERBYSHIRE!

CELEBRATING CULTURAL HERITAGE RURAL LIFE

There are over 50 Parishes in the District, each with a local Council. Many of the rich and varied farming industries have been lost - in Melbourne alone there were 150 Market Gardners in the early 20th century, today there are only 3. 1

One of the District’s key industries was mining for local clay, it was one of only six areas in the country with high quality clay deposits. The clay is distinct as it can easily be shaped into pipes which is why the area played such an important role in Public Health improvements in the Victorian era, and it is good for salt glazing which resulted in the stunning local pottery work.

MEET THE TEAM.... “ Welcome to our Annual Report celebrating our 30th anniversary! At this uncertain time we wanted to share our uplifting stories & provide a guide to our work, which is to develop the arts from the perspectives of the participants.

JULIE BATTEN DIRECTOR

In 2019/20 favourite moments for me were seeing 100+ people building a dry stone wall & seat with the fabulous Derbyshire Dry Stone Walling Association, the sheer joy of mums and children in a Djembe Drumming Circle in Matlock, young people recalling the injustices in the old Pottery Industry after visiting Gladstone Pottery (thank you Gladstone!) and finding out we have been successful with our first Youth Music funding. This year we said goodbye to our wonderful Programmes Manager, Hema Mistry and our passionate and much loved Chair, Katy Lawrence, and welcomed new Trustee, Andrea Wynne whose creative ideas have already impacted on our programme. We would like to thank our core funders; Arts Council England, South Derbyshire District Council and Derbyshire County Council, for continuing to believe in, value and invest in our work.”

“I started as an intern at People Express 8 years ago, and I love my job because no two projects and no two days are the same. My highlights are seeing Newhall Creative Collective curate prints for their exhibition and book, they had so much to say about what they felt ‘quality’ looked like.

DID YOU KNOW: People Express was a core partner in the £1.1m project that converted Sharpe’s Pottery Museum.

JULIE GOODWIN FINANCE OFFICER

KALILA STOREY ARTS ENGAGEMENT OFFICER

“What I love is meeting the many different community groups behind the projects and hearing about how their experiences have changed their lives.”

I remember young people filling the whole floor of Midway Community Centre’s hall floor in stunningly beautiful Rangoli patterns and I watched with pride, Alex’s ‘If the Tree’s Could Talk’ storytelling performance at the TIMBER festival to rapturous applause.”

PARTICIPATORY & COMMUNITY ARTS People Express is a professional arts organisation. We support a huge range of community groups to set up their own projects mainly using participatory and community arts because it’s great fun, it covers lots of different art forms, it is accessible so everyone can take part and participants have choices and control and are actively involved.......

PARTICIPATORY ARTS

CREATING YOUR OWN ART WORK You can create amazing art work, even if you think you can’t paint or draw, everyone has creative skills and an imagination.

Festival of Leisure 2019, Church Gresley Drop in eco-friendly workshops for the whole family at the District’s annual outdoor event, attracting 5000+ people over the weekend.

Raising the Sky Raising the Sky, a local community group, commissioned People Express to programme inclusive arts workshops for young people at risk of exclusion, including disabled young people and young people with the least access to the arts.

LAND (Looking After Nature in Derbyshire), Hatton

ART WORK THAT IS UNIQUE AND HAS MEANING FOR YOU You will be listened to and valued, you can reflect on who you are & what you would like to explore and say.

The community group that created the Salt Brook Heritage Trail in Hatton went on to create a bespoke dry stone wall and seating, further enhancing their sculpture park & set up eco-friendly sessions for families including bat & bird box building. Thanks to the Derbyshire Dry Stone Walling Association.

........People Express is part of East Midlands Participatory Arts Forum (EMPAF) a peer support network of organisations and artist led companies who share best practice, skills and inspiring stories. There are lots of different ways to describe participatory and community arts (everyone in EMPAF will have their own!), but here it’s what they mean to us and what they offer‌

COMMUNITY ARTS CREATING WORK TOGETHER Making new friends, sharing your skills, finding common ground in a safe and supportive space.

OAKs (Overseal Arts Kommunity) A new village group (a legacy of our Creative Communities Programme) set up 30 local workshops, talks and activities for all ages.

Life is For Living Working with Amber Valley Peer Support Group and Film City. We captured on film the challenges, wisdoms and joys and the huge value of friendship, when lives are affected by dementia. Watch the video here: www.people-express. org.uk/lifeisforliving/

ART WORK WITH MEANING FOR COMMUNITIES ALL OVER THE WORLD You can feel isolated by your challenges, you can feel invisible and undervalued, but together as a group, who share common experiences, anything is possible.

Holocaust Memorial Banner Commissioned by SDDC, the banner was created through drop-in sessions on the theme of peace and unity using handmade paper.

PARTICIPATORY ARTS

PARTICIPATORY &

PARTICIPATORY ARTS

PARTICIPANTS CHOOSE THE ART FORM, THE DATE AND THE PLACE Choice is very important. Especially if you feel you are not able to access more traditional activities or learning opportunities, and if you feel your choices are limited in other areas of your life.

Hurst Farm, Matlock Together with Friends of Hurst Farm, Derbyshire Dales District Council & CVS we set up a range of workshops chosen by local children and families over the school holidays. The project is part of their wider regeneration programme.

Linton Village - Stay and Spray A new village group (a legacy of our Creative Communities programme) consulted with their young people and they chose spray art (including ‘glow in the dark!) print making, drumming, mandala painting and digital light graffiti.

DID YOU KNOW: People Express records all of our sessions and this year it was 297! Almost a workshop a day. 5

COMMUNITY ARTS COMMUNITY ARTS

OVER TIME THE GROUP TAKES OVER OWNERSHIP OF THE PROJECT One of our main ambitions for our work is for people to go from little or no confidence in their arts abilities to playing a leadership role and developing new projects independently. Creative Chrysanthemum, Newhall Adults living in supported housing with little or no confidence in the arts, set up popular drop in workshops attended by people from all over Swadlincote. The project created such beautiful prints, photographs, ceramics, fused glass, spray art canvases, willow sculptures and handmade felt hangings that they were invited to curate their own exhibition at Sharpe’s Museum. Their glossy Art Book ‘Imagination Runs Wild’ is available online and in hard copy. Take a look here: www.issuu.com/peopleexpress/docs/newhall_creative_collective_book_issuu Tuesday Night Project, Midway In the second year of this project the Midway Community Youth Activities Committee has taken a more active leadership role themselves and has run many of the hugely popular sessions (up to 50 young people per week!) The Committee successfully applied for new project funding.

ARTISTS • CURATORS Artist’s ideas, technical skills and artistic innovation provide unique, high quality experiences for participants. EAST MIDLANDS The 14 organisations and artist led companies worked together to set up 4 ‘open’ expeditions PARTICIPATORY ARTS FORUM (EMPAF) DIGITAL EXPEDITIONS exploring the role of all things digital in their work. ‘Is digital increasing access to the arts? Does it empower? Can people be more creative? Or does it only offer you the choices that the programmer has created?’ These were some of the issues we explored as a sector.

9

The young people attending our last expedition asked, “how can they train up for jobs in the fast moving digital sector when they haven’t been invented yet?”.

“Newhall Creative Collective was put together to change the perception of Chrysanthemum Court, and to show people that not everyone is the same. That is what we have done. We have brought people from far and wide and shown them, just because a place has a persona about it, doesn’t mean it’s actually true. GOOD IDEA: WHY NOT TURN THIS ANNUAL REPORT INTO A BEAUTIFUL COLLAGE WHEN YOU’VE FINISHED READING IT!

Helping create Newhall Creative Collective has also changed my life. I now get out of the flat and meet new people (even if it is only once a week, that is a massive step). I’ve met people that I wouldn’t have said anything to in the past. It has brought a community together, for the better and I couldn’t be more proud of everything we have created. We are a family!”
