INTERVIEW

Coming

Currently on the Vans Warped Tour in the US, We Came As Romans are as excited as anyone about the festival coming to Australia, and Melbourne in December. All things are happening for the band, who have just released their third studio album Tracing Back Roots, and guitarist Josh Moore spoke to PEARL’s Alex Chisholm from the back of his tour bus. “The overall theme for the album is remembering where you came from and having all these experiences along the way,” Moore explained. “We recorded the album with John Feldmann (Goldfinger, The Used, Plain White T’s) in March and were just waiting for it to be released. Our single Hope was released in January and it showed the new direction that we wanted to go as a band. John became a really good friend and was really helpful towards our band.” Tracing Back Roots sees the first time the band has used clean vocals. He says, “We have always known that Dave could sing and were just waiting for the right moment to bring in melodic vocals for a record. It gives a good dynamic to our songs and Dave is happy to be doing more stuff vocally.”

The overall theme for the album is remembering where you came from and having all these experiences along the way

Being a melodic metalcore band from Detroit has not been an easy gig for We Came As Romans; however Moore says there has been a lot of support from the city they grew up in, “There were a lot of kids supporting us when we formed the band and they were coming to our shows in giant empty rooms that we rented out. We played in Detroit a few days ago and it was great to know that there were people in that crowd who have known us for seven years. We were a proud local band back then and we couldn’t be more proud to be from Detroit today.” Currently on the US Vans Warped Tour, he says it is an overwhelming experience, “Every day you wake up and find out what time you are going to play and what time you are going to do signings

and interviews. The time schedule for everything is different every day. I don’t think there is a tour quite like it. We are playing on the main stage all summer so the crowds have been awesome.” After a lengthy hiatus, the Vans Warped Tour is returning to Australia. Moore explains, “I’m looking forward to coming back. We have played No Sleep Til and a club tour in recent years, but last year we couldn’t find the time to make it. We have a great fan base in Australia and everyone is really nice.” We Came As Romans have built a great relationship with Parkway Drive over the years and they are very much looking forward their set according to Moore, “They headlined the very first European tour that we played. We’re also doing Vans Warped Europe and are playing some club shows with them before we come to Australia so we have a huge amount of respect for them and it’ll be great to see them play in Australia - in their homeland.”

Tracing Back Roots is out now, and We Came As Romans play alongside The Offspring, Simple Plan and many more at Vans Warped Tour on Saturday December 7 in Melbourne. The venue is yet to be announced, but tickets are on sale now through www.vanswarpedtour.oztix.com.au.

August is shaping up to be a busy month for Peninsula local Jase Strugarek, with the launch of his EP Gypsy Blood and shows both uptown and locally booked to coincide. Under the moniker of ‘The NbC’, Strugarek has been playing around town since late 2010, at venues like Three Palms, The HiFi Bar and Revolver Upstairs, and is now set for a big second half of 2013, taking his blend of rock and acoustic roots around the country. The sound of The NbC is the careful combination of upbeat distorted riffs and chilled out harmonics, with a coastal vibe underpinning the songs. The EP was recorded and produced by Nigel Villella at NVS Pro-Audio Studios in Melbourne and saw Strugarek bring his versatile and dynamic

REVIEW

UP CLOSE SCOTT Over the years I’ve met many and dated a couple of DJs and enjoyed watching them ‘do their thing’, but I have to say it was a real pleasure to meet and review professional DJ and total ‘Mr Nice Guy’, Scott Gardner. Gardner is the resident Sunday arvo DJ at The Deck, the newly refurbished upmarket drinking and eating establishment on the corner of Davey St and Nepean Highway in Frankston.

Punters lounged by the fireside, chatted noisily on the large deck outside and ate rumbustiously in the restaurant as Gardner’s cruisy tunes played smoothly in the background. Chatting to Gardner over his coffee break, he revealed his DJ days started over 20 years ago, around his 18th birthday. While cutting his teeth as a mobile DJ, doing 18th’s, 21st’s, engagements and weddings, he realised music was in his blood so broadened his knowledge to include many more genres including Triple J alternative, urban R&B, house, trance and more. This triggered a gearshift and prompted him to discover a love of old disco, funk and soul, when Studio 54 was big. It had that bit of glamour and was again a further catalyst for him wanting to dig up more styles and understand the groove that was going on at the time. Today Gardner’s journey is about discovering songs that inspire him. His style is more end of disco and

GARDNER

beginning house, like late 70s early 80s funk. It’s soul disco, but with new twists as the remixes or bootlegs still retain the old song but bring the sound into the now. Gardner spends many research hours on the net, looking for artists and playing remixes from people like Jamiroquai, Grant Nelson, Stevie Wonder and bands like Masters At Work, to name a few. “It’s about rhythms and not about banging drums at 100 miles an hour,” says Gardner. “Music has to have soul.” Gardner has a big local following and it’s no wonder. Not only does he mix on the fly, but the mixes blend harmoniously and seamlessly in the same key, leaving people toe tapping as they eat and able to chat. Having been around the local venues and scene for many years, he’s a DJ that knows how to please punters and give them a pleasant experience. According to Gardner, his motto is all about “entertaining the people by playing cool tunes creating happy memories that bring smiles to their faces.” Until next month, party well… Terri writes monthly for PEARL on a range of artists and issues from both the local music scene and around the world in her accompanying ‘Unplugged From A Distance’ column. If you have an artist or topic you’d like to let Terri know about, email her directly on upcloseandunplugged@pearlmag.com.au TERRI LEE FATOUROS

UNPLUGGED FROM A DISTANCE Continuing from last month’s story, Everett is driving his van back from Cairns to Taree when a semi driver on the opposite side of the highway falls asleep at the wheel, careers out of control, crosses lanes and smashes head on with Everett’s van. The van is a wipe off and Everett is lucky to be alive. With both legs broken, broken pelvis and arm, Everett spends the next six weeks in hospital on morphine. The irony is that this inspires their 3rd album, Morphine and Mayhem.

Not being a guy who gives up easily and exactly five months to the day, the boys play the 2012 Bluesfest for the second time. This time a dear friend, Banjo Brad Handcock, joins them. This is where their story twists because big boy Handcock, over-coming his shyness, performs with Mojo Bluesmen on stage for the first time. The dude literally looks the real deal and plays with fire in his belly and a devil in his soul. The combination is utterly brilliant, leaving punters dancing wildly and screaming for more. Sadly, the few hundred who witnessed this impromptu rapturous moment in time will never experience it again for shortly after Handcock tragically dies the rock star death on his 21st birthday, after drinking 2 bottles of vodka and choking in his vomit. Handcock’s death only enforces his legacy as a banjo playing genius, more so for the many that knew and heard him play will always be touched by his masterful deliverance of the banjo. As a dedication to Handcock, Mojo Bluesmen plan to incorporate some rare banjo riffs that a friend captured on their mobile during Handcock’s first and only public appearance on a future album. The band has since performed at Splendour in the Grass, with Triple J airplay for songs off their 4th album Blast of Badass. Further recognition came their way when the boys starred as themselves in the SBS TV series Houso’s written and starring Paul French from Pizza fame. To date, Mojo Bluesmen have performed over 2500 gigs and sold in excess of 20,000 CDs straight from their busking case. For more info please email Terri on upcloseandunplugged@pearlmag.com.au or go to www.facebook.com/MojoBluesmen. Until next month… TERRI LEE FATOUROS

I’ve talked a lot about country singer/songwriters in this column. Flick through the archives and you’ll see I’ve rattled on about the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Gram Parsons and Kevin Welch, just to name a few. But if you were to ask me who I think is the best of the lot, the guy or gal that ‘gets it’ more than any other…I woudn’t hesitate to tell you it’s a fellow named Bob Dylan. I know it’s a little unfair – after all, Bob hardly ever seems to bother with country music, given that it’s only one of the styles that he’s perfected and made his own over the past fifty years – but the truth is when he does go country, he exhibits the kind of storytelling mastery that all us country writers aspire to.

But really I should be keeping things local – so I’m going to finish off this month by mentioning that a country artist that you might know is venturing down to Bittern on August 17 for a special, one-off ‘house concert’. House concerts are all the rage in the USA and Europe, and it’s good to see they’re taking off here too. Oh and in case you’re wondering who the artist is…it’s me, Lachlan Bryan. Email keckfam@bigpond.com if you’d like to come along. Lachlan Bryan is primarily a singer/songwriter, with his debut album Shadow Of The Gun out now through Core/Sony. He also moonlights as a gifted observer and music journalist, writing monthly for PEARL Magazine on all things folk/country/ bluegrass. If you’ve got a new release, upcoming show or you’d like to get in touch with Lachlan, drop him a line at countryfolk@pearlmag.com.au LACHLAN BRYAN

It’s fitting then that one of my favourite Australian songwriters, Van Walker, along with Irish songsmith Gallie, will be bringing two of Dylan’s finest, country-inspired albums to life at The Caravan Music Club in Oakleigh on August 23. Walker is (for want of any better phrase) the real deal, and to hear him pick great Dylan songs from the albums John Wesley Harding and Desire will be a real treat. Looking further ahead, rumour has it that the Red Hill Country Music Festival is about to undergo a re-brand. Reliable sources tell me that the new-look event will still take place in January, but will be known as ‘The Peninsula Music Festival’. Whilst it will be country focused, there is scope for a little more cross-genre pollination than in past years. Oh, and I also believe that there’ll be a new location. You heard it here first folks! Of course, it’s not 100% confirmed, but like that fellow in the Dolmio ads, I have faith in my sources. Whilst I’m excited about the potential for more great country (and particularly alt-country) artists to visit our region in January, of more immediate concern is the fact that one of my favourite new female songwriters – Sydney’s Katie Brianna is venturing as far south as Brunswick this month. Katie sounds a little like Kasey Chambers, but writes draws inspiration from the same dark corners as folks like Gillian Welch or Warren Zevon. I recommend you get along to Brunswick’s Retreat Hotel on Saturday, August 10 to see her in the front bar.

Grace Knig t GLIDES INTO TOWN

INTERVIEW

PEARL Magazine went one-on-one with Grace Knight as she tells us of her upcoming reunion with her band Eurogliders. The frontwoman cannot wait to be reminiscing and performing all of her greatest hits to her Australian audience, the fans that she grew up with. Knight does not have a single proudest moment when narrowing down her years in the music industry. She explains, “The fact that I am still here after 35 years is incredible! I have performed in front of presidents and royalty; I am lucky enough to just have this career and to be still going.” Being a multi-skilled woman, Knight has concentrated on her solo career for the past 20 years. She compares her solo work to her beloved band, “I have been recording Jazz for many years now and it has doubled my time in Eurogliders. There are so many fantastic songs out there that have been so well crafted that it is just a mind of fantastic tracks that I can choose from. There is a different space in Pop music and Jazz, with Jazz being a lot more refined.” Eurogliders’ biggest hit Heaven (Must Be There) will be forever remembered. Knight tells us of what occurred at the time the song became popular, “We were still quite new and we had a couple of hits before that but it was always very exciting to hear our track. As soon the opening bars would appear on the radio, we would tell everyone to be quiet because we wanted to hear what the DJ had to say. By that stage we had reached our goal of becoming a recognised band.” “I didn’t realise how many hits Eurogliders have”, Knight explains as she goes through the back catalogue for the upcoming tour. “When I think back on our career, I think of Heaven (Must Be There) and We Will Together. We are going to play 90 minutes worth of hits including Maybe Only I Dream, Absolutely, Another Day in the Big World, The City of Soul, and Can’t Wait To See You. We will be doing a couple of new ones as well. For the most part we will get up and sing the songs that people know and love and remember Eurogliders for.” Catch Eurogliders live at Chelsea Heights Hotel on Thursday 8 August. Tickets are available from the venue or through Ticketmaster. ALEX CHISHOLM

Blues

Illustrated

Welcome to PEARL’s new blues column, where each edition we’ll bring you up to date with all the latest news, gigs and releases in our local blues scene, as well as some plugs for great gigs gone by during the month! Peninsula Blues Club August 11 will see the launch of the new Peninsula Blues Club (PBC) located at the City of Frankston Bowling Club. The PBC aims to bring together blues enthusiasts, blues artists and budding local musicians. The club will meet on the 2nd Sunday of every month, with the doors opening at 6.30pm and a small entry fee. The evening schedule consists of a house band at 7pm; a featured artist at 8pm followed by a Blues Jam. Mike Elrington will be the headline act on opening night. For more details, head to www.facebook.com/PeninsulaBluesClub

Chris Wilson at Boot camp Targeted for ages 12-26, the Courthouse Arts blues boot camp is a school holiday program where participants can gain practical music industry skills. This year they’ve assembled a formidable collection of experienced music professionals, such as

Wayne Jury, Sandy Brady, Dave Steel, Sarah Carroll, Tim Neal & Chris Wilson. For all the info, visit www.courthouse.org. au/random/blues-boot-camp

Shaun Kirk at the Bay Maybe I’m biased but the combination of overdriven acoustic guitar, vocals, harp and driving drum triggers really sets Shaun Kirk apart as a blues musician. Amidst a busy schedule of touring with his Wick Sessions CD/DVD launch, Shaun delivered a great afternoon of ‘One Man Band’ blues at the Bay Hotel in Mornington July 7. An enjoyable blend of material from his Wick Sessions album and some new material made the audience forget it was pouring with rain outside. Find out all about Kirk at www.shaunkirk.com

Chicken Walk Shakedown At the time of writing, Chris Russell’s Chicken Walk is currently halfway through a tour supporting Clairy Browne & the Bangin’ Rackettes on the eastern seaboard to include a night at the Caravan Club in Oakleigh. August 2 & 3 will see the launch of Chicken Walk’s new album Shakedown at the Northcote Social Club. If you haven’t already caught one of the Chicken Walk’s powerful “Chrississipian” blues performances, I would urge you to check them out. For more details www. chrisrussellschickenwalk.com

Whitley The stars are a mess but he certanly isn’t

Homegrown talent isn’t hard to come by around the Mornington Peninsula and recently PEARL Magazine caught up with one of its most talented exports, ‘Whitley’ (aka Lawrence Greenwood). Fresh from the release of his new album Even The Stars Are A Mess’ and 3 years of travelling, Whitley is back home touring Australia and admits a small pub in Victoria is where he perfected his musical talent. “Marty Williams used to run a local musicians night in Balnarring, he encouraged everyone to play together, a lot of good acts came out of there...” he explains. “Everybody could express themselves and tell each other exactly what they thought of each other”. At a young age he moved schools frequently and even lived in Europe for a while but says Dromana is home and has fond memories growing up there. “ My mates and I would ride our bikes down at Mt Martha estuary, build jumps for our BMX’s and fly through the trees and injure ourselves, much to my mothers dismay.” Greenwood also remembers his first big break in music fondly, when his song Lost In Time was played on Triple J. “Me and my mates were driving down to the surf one day and they started playing it. From then on they played it over and over again, I couldn’t believe it.”

INTERVIEW

My Heart Is Not A Machine, the lead single from his new album, is getting great reviews along with the album itself. Rolling Stone awarded it four stars, which was a great reaction for Whitley from such a publication. “It was really nice, I appreciate that someone understood what I had written.” He continues, “I just hope that when I play in Melbourne they understand the music and in turn feel understood by it. That would be my greatest hope”. The trouble Greenwood went through trying to record this album was remarkable. From travelling to London, Peru and the Netherlands in search of a recording studio, to contracting salmonella, before finally settling in a small village in Tuscany, Italy. Whitley reveals he went through a purple patch of writing here and says this inspiration came because it reminded him of home. “Just being in the forest in Tuscany reminded me of the Peninsula. There was a lot of trees around and there was something about this particular area that reminded me of home.” He continues, “I like being away from the city. I only live there because that’s where my mates live and if we all agreed to move back to Rye or something, I’d move there in a minute.” Whitley has toured Australia and Europe, sold out shows in America and travelled the world but he remains firmly grounded and always likes to spend time with his mates. “The first thing I did when I got home was go to my see my friend Ben. We sat in his shed all night and talked sh*t,” he laughs. As for the future, Greenwood plans to go back to Tuscany in the summer to “do some writing, eat some pizza and ride (his) bike.” He’s written a book of poetry and wants to publish it when he finds the time, but his biggest concern at the moment is about this article, saying, “I hope mum reads it.” Whitley’s new album Even The Stars Are A Mess is out now, through Dew Process/ Universal. WADE after RIVER

Steve Wade was the front man of iconic Australian group Little River Band between 1996 to early 2000. His powerful vocals and artistic talent for songwriting has seen him enjoy an amazing and diverse career working with some of the best in the music business and be named the Australian Songwriter of the Year twice. PEARL’s Jessica Mills spoke to Wade about his years with Little River Band, his recent appearance on Australian television “I was lost in songwriting from when I was about show The 14 until now. It’s such an amazing process to Voice and come up with something from nothing.” his latest band ‘Steve, Ray & Vaughan,’ who will be playing covers of songs from the 70s until now at the Mordialloc Sporting Club in August.

PEARL: You’ve been a member of ten different bands throughout your career, how did you first get into music? WADE: I had a great drama teacher who encouraged us to write our own plays and I used to write the music and songs for those, which inspired me to keep going. I was lost in songwriting from when I was about 14 until now (laughs). It’s such an amazing process to come up with something from nothing. PEARL: What was the time you spent as lead vocalist for the Little River Band like? Do you have any favourite memories? WADE: Too many to mention really, almost everyday was a highlight. One of the main highlights though was doing the Today Show in New York City. They do a summer series concert outside NBC studios. That was cool because it was almost like the show was ours. We did 4 songs I think throughout the whole news program. PEARL: What was the experience like auditioning for The Voice? WADE: I was actually invited to go on The Voice, so I didn’t have to audition. I was basically asked to go on it to fill out the script I guess and there was a number of the older sort of singers who have had a bit of a career there too. It was about our story so we weren’t necessarily the regular contestants. We were put in there to make good television. PEARL: Tell me about ‘Steve, Ray & Vaughan’? What sort of stuff are you

PUTTING ON YOUR GIGS Opportunity has come a’ knocking for anyone who’s ever thought of throwing their own music show – big or small. Events coordinators, venue operators, musicians and big dreamers are all invited to crowdfund an event as part of the Pozible Gigs Project, and with $10,000 in cash prizes up for grabs, what better excuse is there to put on a cracking show? For those of you who might be a little unfamiliar with the concept of crowdfunding or the community of Pozible, prepare to be enlightened. Pozible provides an online platform for project creators to present their ideas to a connected audience, worldwide. If people take a liking to your creation, they can support it by pledging money. In return, project creators offer rewards matched to the level of funding commitment from a hug, to a home cooked dinner with your mum, to concert tickets. Individuals, groups and organizations can all use Pozible to raise funds through selling both tangible and intangible rewards. All projects must have a funding goal and a time limit, set by the project creator with 60 days being the longest campaign period possible. Before and during this time the creator must spread the word about their project to fans, friends, family and strangers, who can simply register to help fund the project. Working on an ‘all or nothing’ formula, the project must reach its target amount within the time limit or no money changes hands. If a project creator does reach or surpass their fundraising target,

they must deliver on rewards and pay Pozible a service fee of 5%. So now you’re all clued-up on what crowdfunding is and the role Pozible plays as a platform and community, you are one step closer to understanding the latest opportunity that Pozible is plating up for creatives. Whether you are a jazz aficionado, a classical enthusiast, a rocker, hip-hopper or doofer; or you just like to get the house pumping, Pozible are calling out for anyone with the skills to organise and fund their own music event. To get the ball rolling, write into the folks at Pozible by August 12 and tell them in 100 words or less about the kind of show you’d love to put on. From here, a bunch of projects will be selected to face off in a crowdfunding blitz from August 26 to October 24. In terms of content, your event can be in whatever style, theme, or scale you see fit; so get as weird, whacky and creative as you dare. As if throwing your own event wasn’t incentive enough, Pozible are offering $10,000 in cash prizes across five categories including Most Funds Raised, Most Supporters, Pozible Pick, Fastest to Target and Most Social Media Shares. Submissions for Pozible Gigs are open now and close 12 August. All participating crowdfunding campaigns will go live on the 26 August. playing at your shows? WADE: Its mainly covers, and we just got together out of fun really. Since I left Little River Band I’ve been playing in a few trios and bands that were a bit precious about playing the overdone covers and ‘the room pleasers’, as we call them. That’s what people want to hear, though. People don’t get into it unless they know the songs most of the time. PEARL: What have you got planned for the future? Are you writing any new music and do you have any other projects you’re currently working on? WADE: I’ve got a corporate band called Trousers with a number of the John Farnham band guys and we do lots of corporate gigs around the country. I’ve also been working a little bit with Andrew Wishart, who came second on the X-Factor in 2011. I’m sort of in his band and we work all over the country. I’m also confidently writing. Through connections with the LRB, I’ve got a few in-roads with some of the bigger song publishing companies in Nashville and New York. I’m writing and pitching songs to artists all the time. Catch Steve Wade with his band ‘Steve, Ray & Vaughan’ on August 24 from 9:30pm at the Mordialloc Sporting Club. the glass is always available and frequently changes. At Brass, customers often find themselves losing track of time; perhaps even feeling a little peckish. Why not look at the food menu? Braises, arancini, pizzas, gourmet cheese and the popular grazing platter for two are some of the items offered on the expanding menu and specials board. But how can we forget Brass’s most iconic drink? The Long Island Ice Tea served in a silver teapot has to be Mornington’s favourite drink. The refreshing five spirit beverage, a perfect drink to share, brings friends and family together for an afternoon or night out. Stroll down to Brass Razu and say hello to the friendly, fresh-faced staff. These guys will undoubtedly prove to you how the most iconic wine bar on the Peninsula just got better. Morning Star Estate Many people would know Morning Star Estate in Mt Eliza for their delicious food and wine. Many would know the venue from a wedding or function they’ve attended there. Others would have been through the gates to enjoy an event or local festival. Truth is, Morning Star continues to have all those things and more for young and old with more exciting plans being penned for later in the year. Since February 1, Morning Star has been back under the management of owner Judy Barrett, with the restaurant under the watchful eye of executive chef Richard Keane and his talented crew. It’s a restaurant that has been a hallmark of the venue for many years, operating from Wednesday-Sunday for lunch and Friday and Saturday nights for dinner, with group bookings always welcome, as well as sit-down or cocktail functions on offer.

Outside of the restaurant, the team is also focused on opening up new areas with the Beer Garden set to feature craft beers, local wines, rustic food and live music. Relaxed, informal and affordable ‘Family Friday Nights’ will kick off in November. In fact, it’s a family friendly environment, now more than ever, with games on the terrace

lawn proving popular, as well as kids parties catered for with fairies and other entertainment. On the event calendar, in addition to the upcoming Friday nights, you can enjoy High Tea every Sunday from 2pm. With bookings essential by the preceding Friday, it’s your chance to sample sandwiches, canapés, sweet things and scones, together with a glass of bubbles and over a dozen leaf teas from $49.50. In addition, October will bring the Family Feast & Field Weekend, a 2 day celebration of local producers, growers, farmers and businesses all doing great things from our backyard. You can find all the info on festivals and events, including Morning Star’s ‘New Years Eve Concert’, to include music, kids activities and (of course) the fireworks show at 9pm, on the venue’s brand new website launching soon. Ice cream giants, Ben & Jerry’s, won a court order late last year temporarily blocking a producer of pornographic DVDs from selling and advertising films with similar titles to those of the company and its ice cream flavours. The porn firm made DVD films called Ben & Cherry’s that were based on some of Ben & Jerry’s “wellknown and iconic” flavours, something that breaches copyright laws.

Some of these titles include Boston Cream Thigh, New York Fat & Chunky, Peanut Butter D-Cup and Chocolate Fudge Babes. The appearance of the DVDs also came under fire as they all looked similar to the packaging of the ice cream. Despite the company’s outrage, Ben & Jerry’s has previously used some saucy names for its ice cream flavours, including Schweddy Balls and Karamel Sutra. EXTRA, EXTRA

Music Between The Lines... A LEFT OF CENTRE LOOK AT ALL THE RIGHT THINGS, WITH KOG

I

t can be difficult to argue the case for Dylan as a legend at times. The naysayers will claim he’s a nasally sounding, potsmoking winger while the believers will argue he is a snarling, guitar-wielding poet.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of Bob Dylan’s release Blowin’ In The Wind and the breakthrough of a young man who would go on to be the most prolific and prophetic stand alone songwriter in rock history.

It’s hard to believe we may never have had Dylan at all. His first album was a flop selling less than 5000 copies on its first release. But a plea to keep him at Columbia records by famous A&R rep John Hammond saved him. He had one more shot to get it right or risk joining the wilderness of the underground folk scene. Blowin’ In The Wind and the album it’s from The Freewheelin’ is what he came up. It was a game changer. The Freewheelin’ contained everything that we would grow to love about him. The protest (Masters of War), the melody (Girl from the North Country), the heartbreak (Don’t Think Twice It’s Alright) and of course the poet (Blowin’ in the Wind). While his contribution to the craft of popular music has never been underestimated his contribution to singing has often been overlooked. What Dylan did for singing may be more important than his contribution to lyricism. To a pre-Second World War generation used to hearing the smooth tones of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Ella Fitzgerald on the radio, the success of Dylan was a radical symbol of a new generation.

Dylan’s voice is by no means pretty. But he made people believe in this idea of a ‘character’ in ones voice. He also gave hope to talented musicians who feared their voice would fail them. The likes of Jimi Hendrix have said they would not have stepped up to the microphone if it weren’t for the barriers Dylan broke down before him. Who knows, Hendrix may have remained a frustrated session guitar player if it weren’t for Dylan. The palette and number of voices Dylan made way for are immeasurable. Listen to Subterranean Homesick Blues and you’ll hear the very beginnings of rap. There are many admirers and even more imitators but Dylan was that rare original. The folk music before him sounds irrelevant and the folk music after him still sounds like him. Kog Ravindran is a writer, occasionally sings for Melbourne band, The Scarecrows and currently has his debut solo EP Barricades out in the world. Find out all about him at facebook.com/Kog4music or check him out on Triple J Unearthed. KOG RAVINDRAN

DANCE LIKE NO ONE IS WATCHING… with SIMON PETOCHIO

n Good form to the handsome young beach-walker who

always stops to collect his Siberian huskies’ business in a bag, even in winter when it’s raining hard and no one else appears to be watching. From my cliff-top home I see a lot of strange things, darling. It’s good to know there are still some conscientious people in this world. Esther L. Brainchard, Portsea

I

t might be lame to say, but it’s damn good to do. Come on now, I know at least once in your life you’ve busted a move that’s daggy, awkward, glorious and completely non-pretentious. Whether it’s after some Dutch courage, in front of your bedroom mirror or full-on Risky Business style around the house, it feels good. Conceived by a couple of unruly dance students by the names of Alice Glenn and Heidi Barrett back in 2009, No Lights No Lycra (NLNL) is a weekly dance session that revolves around this feeling. Sans teacher, overpriced athletic wear, set moves and indeed lights, NLNL is a dance community without inhibitions. Last year saw me check out shindig for the first time in the basement of a church in Brunswick – seedy, I know. Rounding up a couple of willing friends from Uni I cautiously ambled down a path to the back of the Church on a Wednesday night at 7pm, giggling sheepishly and full of uncertainty. We shuffled into the basement hall with a rag-tag

bunch of people from varied ages and demographics, all fading into vague dark shapes as the lights went down and the music pumped up. I’m not going to lie, as a first timer I started out in an awkward shuffle, halfwondering if I was about to be struck by a flying limb, half suspicious that the blobs next to me were watching me. However as my eyes slowly adjusted, my inhibitions melted away and before I knew it, I was shaking it like a Polaroid picture. I danced in a room full of strangers to beats from Mariah Carey, Springsteen, Grandmaster Flash, Beyonce, Wham! and everything in between. Without the cares of looking ruggish and sweaty, I carved up that d-floor and left feeling as though I’d worked out and partied all at once.

From humble Fitzroy beginnings, NLNL now runs dance nights across Melbourne, Australia and the wider world, with groups even cropping up in Brooklyn, London, Glasgow, Berlin and Barcelona. Lucky for Peninsula folks, the Seaford Community Hall is one of NLNL’s newest locations, rocking out with the lights out every Wednesday from 7.45-9pm. A drug and alcohol free event, No Lights No Lyrca is a casual dance class that exists for the pure joy of dancing. There is no need to book a place, just look up your nearest location and time at www. nolightsnolyrca.com and rock up with $5 change, an open mind and some comfy shoes to get you groove on. MATILDA HEGGIE

n Poor Form to the creepy old lady with the binoculars who stands in her huge mansion window and constantly watches me walking my dogs up and down Portsea beach. Get a life. Nigel Price, Portsea n Poor Form to the man who backed up to our table and deliberately farted on my doughnut while I was enjoying a cappuccino with my twin sister on Sunday. If you feel one coming on, why not remove yourself from the entire seating area for a moment instead of unloading on a couple of innocent pensioners? Mavis Elders, Rosebud n Good Form to my kids for leading us to a half-naked homeless man they found lying unconscious under Frankson pier. When the poor man awoke he was visibly agitated. We had alerted local authorities and he was promptly removed to a safe location. It makes us so proud to think that we have instilled a sense of social responsibility in our children. Susan Thwacker, Mt Eliza n Poor Form to the three kids who hid on the pier and pelted me with rocks and seaweed as I was strolling below, on my way to work. I was knocked out cold. Next thing I knew, their whole family was standing over me, as well as a couple of cops. The little brats had rubbed sand in my hair and stolen my pants and shoes. Despite my screaming protestations I was handcuffed and hauled away like a mad dog. Kevin Ward, Frankston n Poor Form to the inconsiderate dolt who dragged his Siberian huskies into our boutique & teahouse. He and his smelly beasts were soaked from head to toe, the dogs kept barking at my wife, and to top it off, dangling from his finger was a dripping plastic bag full of feces. They stood blocking the doorway until the rain stopped, without so much as a thought for my other customers! How am I supposed to sell any scented bath-salts or raisin scones under these conditions? Donald Haught, Sorrento n Poor Form to the fancy tea joint in Sorrento. Nothin personal, mate, but ya place stinks like shit. Sam “Wozza” Warburton, St Andrews n Good Form to the helpful security guard for apprehending and removing the two vicious old twins who attacked me in the plaza on Sunday. One never expects to be indecently assaulted with a doughnut, let alone by an eighty-year-old woman! The fact that there were two of the freaks only made it more bizarre. Unacceptable behavior. Serge Cork, Rosebud From tiffs and turmoil to good blokes and great moments, tell us about the good and bad stuff happening around town in our ‘Good Form / Poor Form’ column! TRIBUTE TO A NEW LOUNGE LEONARD COHEN FOR FRANKSTON

The songs of Leonard Cohen by Chris Fatouros & Spiros Falieros will see a unique live performance come to Willow Creek Vineyard, not to be missed. Blessed with a rich soulful voice, multi-instrumental skills and the ability to seemingly mesmerise his audiences, Fatouros has built a reputation for being one of the finest acoustic performers in Melbourne. The duo’s tagline is story about Cohen visiting the Greek island of Hydra in 1960 and how two Australians gave him his first audience. “They arranged for him to perform his poems and songs for their friends and so began Leonard Cohen’s career as a singer/songwriter…” Catch the show at Willow Creek Vineyard, 166 Balnarring Rd in Merricks North, on August 17. Tickets are $35, or $95 for 3-course dinner package. For details, phone 5989 7448.

Those passing through Frankston might not be aware, but locals will surely recognise the dramatic changes in the Frankston hotel and nightclub scene lately. After years maintaining the status quo, recent times have seen the closure of the Robin Hood, Ha’penny Bridge, Shakespeare’s Tavern and Bartiste Bar, emergence of Twe12e Bar on Young St and Moonlit Bar & Grill, closure of the Pier Live (ex 21st Century) venue and much talked about renovation and launch of new venue ‘The Deck’. What some might not know is that The Grand Hotel has also been planning a relaunch, with a revamped upstairs venue filled with chesterfield couches, chandeliers and a relaxed, lounge vibe.

Stay tuned to the pages of PEARL as next month (September) will see the launch of The Grand Lounge, featuring entertainment every Thursday and Friday night and plenty of seating to enjoy a classy and comfortable evening away from the party crowd. For more details, visit www.grandhotelfrankston.com.au

book upstairs at BEACHES

One of Mornington’s favourite venues Beaches of Mornington has, in recent times, been transformed into a comfortable upto-date venue with neutral colour scheme, high communal tables and a tantalising bistro menu with an Asian twist. The latest development has focused on the mezzanine function area.

Open sided and overlooking the stage and dance floor, the mezzanine has always been a popular spot for a gathering and now with its wooden floor and soft lighting, it’s become even more of a lovely space to dine or book for a function. The space seats 35 for dinner or up to 55 for a cocktail event and remains yours for the evening, so after your dinner or early evening function, you can watch the entertainment from upstairs or relax on the couches in between dancing.

August 2013

The Mordialloc Sporting Club is well renowned for its catalogue of great duos and bands each Friday, Saturday and Sunday, many of which are long-standing legends in the Aussie music industry. Having fought hard to stave off the lure of falling into the popular DJ market, they’re proudly a cover band venue, not afraid to feature bands that play the songs you know and love, as well as keep you on the dance floor all night. This month The Sporting Club is ditching the duos, though, and presenting a huge lineup of great cover bands in their ‘BIG August’, set to get the party started no matter what night you head down. Coming up early in the month, you can catch Bag O’Nails on August 3, Redline on August 9, PJ & The Resonators on August 16 and Inxs tribute act ‘INXSive’ on August 11. Added into that mix is 4-piece multi-genre act Rusty Nails, playing on August 10. Always energetic, the vocal harmonies and musicianship of Gary Young, Jason Vorherr, Nigel Davis and Creswell Crisp epitomize experience and professionalism, with each member having shared stages with artists like Glenn Shorrock, Wendy Matthews, Daryl Braithwaite and Russel Morris.

A week later (on August 17) you can catch Mike Oliphant, alongside Michael Doyle and Kevin Murphy, in Gentleman’s Hours, a classic and modern soul, r&b and funk outfit. Further afield on August 23, Mick Pealing and his band bring their blend of original stars, Andy Durant songs and a load of favourite country/soul/rock tunes to Mordy. Alongside him with be Chris Wilson (keys/vocals), Angus Burchall (drums), Mark Tonelli (guitar/ vocals) and Jo Imbroll (bass/vocals); all with bands like Broderick Smith, Jimmy Barnes, Tina Arena, Max Merritt and Mae Parker in the prospective resumes. Late in the month you can also catch former Little River Band frontman and brief Voice contestant Steve Wade, with Ray Tosti and Tony ‘Vaughn’ Tosti in ‘Steve, Ray & Vaughan’, a band all about having fun and playing genuine crowd favourites! (Check out our interview with Wade earlier in the mag) So make sure you get down to The Mordialloc Sporting Club this month for their ‘Big August’ of great coverbands and party entertainment! he Stetson Family, a band at the forefront of Australia’s contemporary bluegrass/alt-country scene, will play at the Hickinbotham on September 1. The hugely popular Melbourne five-piece will return from their winter break around mid-August and begin playing shows in Victoria. The band is a bunch of knockabouts from Melbourne who share a love for country, bluegrass and many other types of music. Members include Nad Budge, John Bartholomeusz, Colin Swan, Andy Carswell and Cool Hand Luke Richardson. With two albums released since they formed in 2008, both being recognised nationally and internationally, the Stetson Family have proved they are a band with much potential. In 2012, they were invited by the International Bluegrass Music Association to take part in World of Bluegrass 2012, in Nashville, Tennesee, with their song ‘O’ Winding River’ being chosen as one of

10 songs to be showcased. They’ve also received nominations for Best Group and Best Song in the 2012 Victorian & National Country Music Award. The band formed when Nad bumped into John who was working with Colin. Having seen the film, O Brother Where Art Thou, Colin bought a banjo and they all got back together and discovered their shared love of bluegrass and Americana roots music. They regularly perform on the national festival circuit as well as many small town and community festivals. Kicking off on August 18, shows begin at The Union Hotel (Brunswick), before The Drunken Poet (West Melbourne) on August 31, Hickinbotham (Dromana) on September 1 & the Guildford Banjo Jamboree Guildford on September 21/22. BRIANNA’S DARKER SIDE

Katie Brianna is an Americana and alternative country singer from Sydney, who began writing songs as a way to escape her seemingly incurable shyness. With her sweet, sorrowful voice, it wasn’t long before she caught the attention of some of her home country’s finest musicians and sure enough she was collaborating with Paul Kelly and Bill Chambers before her school classmates had even graduated. After some years, some soul searching and some time alone to think about what kind of album she wanted to make, 24-year-old Katie has emerged with Dark Side Of The Morning, and you can catch the country songstress as she launches the album at The Retreat Hotel, Brunswick, on Saturday August 10, with support by locals The Weeping Willows. A L I B A RTER

In these times of seemingly overhyped pop idols and dubiously talented internet sensations, Melbourne-based singer/songwriter Ali Barter possess the natural chops to have garnered attention the old fashioned way – through unabashed raw talent, passionate determination and steadfast hard work. Barter’s clear, ringing tone has a habit of elevating every note she sings, evoking comparisons to a long list of incomparable artists: Patsy Cline, Cat Power, Aimee Mann, Laura Marling and Feist. Her music covers a gamut of styles and as she continues to write music for a 2013 she will perform a one-off show at The Northcote Social Club, Northcote supporting The Trouble With Templeton, on August 16. TALK OF THE TOWN

‘Dan And Amy’ are brother and sister. In, fact they have been for all their lives. With their band (consisting of Tom, Sarah and Nick ) they play music influenced by a rich history of folk song-writing with detailed harmonies and dramatic band arrangements. If Paul Kelly wrote songs for Fleet Foxes, and then Peter, Paul and Mary sung them, it would kind of sound like Dan And Amy. These younglings are stirring up the talk across town right now and are in the process of recording an album to be released later in 2013.

As soon as the first few bars of Long Holiday’s debut album ...Greetings From belt out of the speakers it’s fairly evident that this Melbourne three piece are highly influenced by 90s grunge. The infectious spirit in which the three deliver the music is definitely a highlight, making fun, fast and furious tunes perfect for energetic live shows! Loud vocals, distorted bass lines and hard-hitting drums all packaged up in heavy-laden punk-fuzz is this band’s trademark and, whilst they aren’t here to save the world with their rock, they sure are having a fun time making that racket of theirs in the short two years they have been together.

RECORDING LIVE AT BAHA [PART ONE]

It was 1981 and it was to be my first my first venture into the recording studio and into the unknown. I was playing with a three-piece combo called N.R.C, and after about ten months of slogging it out playing all the local haunts around Melbourne (and the odd country date) we decided to record our first demo tape. Yes… TAPE! We booked the time in at Railroad Recording Studio, a facility situated between two railway stations - Yarraman and Noble Park. The setup was a 24-channel desk and four-track recoding reel to reel. We recorded track one (drums), track two (bass), track three (vocals & guitar) and track four (lead guitar & second vocals). After two hours of recording and seven tracks (with no click), we had our first demo tape in our hot hands. It was a Hitachi cassette that we could copy and give to our friends and whoever was interested. Recording has come a long way since those days. For instance if you wanted to record live shows you had to have a whole truck full of recording gear outside the venue and miles of cable to

INTERVIEW do anything properly. Fast-forward and all you need is a mixer with outlets to the interface and a USB cable to your computer, which obviously needs to have some recording software on it. In short, you can carry all of it in a small suit case. Now there is a new exciting development on the Southern Peninsula, with Baha (my local haunt) now having installed not one but two recording facilities! You now have a choice of two guys you can talk to about your next live recording, being Matt Jones (who I’ve written about previously) and Chris Hallam (who has been around the local scene for many years). I met with the guys recently to ask them few questions. PEARL: Matt, your setup seems very compact and practical. What gear are you using here? JONES: I use a Tascam US-2000 Interface. It gives me 14 analogue inputs and I use direct outs from the Soundcraft desk to split the signal so the sounds I record are dry, and not

processed by the desk. The Tascam is super stable and it gives me a very clean transparent sound to work with. PEARL: What happens after initial recording? JONES: The next day I start fresh with the raw files, EQ’ing and balancing the whole mix so it sits together properly and so all the instruments and vocals sound clear. Then I take a break to rest my ears and come back to master the whole session. PEARL: What has been the response from the musos when you tell them they can have their gig recorded? JONES: Once they realise it’s a professional multi-track mix and not a desk mix they become very keen! There’s sometimes some scepticism has crept in due to bad experiences in the past, but once they’ve heard the quality of the recording, the response has been overwhelming. I just completed CDs for four bands in the last week. Chris Hallam’s article will be published in the next months issue and it makes for very interesting follow-up reading. To book your next gig recorded live get in touch with Baha by phoning 5985 2077 or calling Matt Jones directly on 0449 610 269. Baha is located at 22012209 Point Nepean Rd in Rye. (UNIVERSAL / ABC) European Vacation was recorded mostly whilst travelling across Europe, and it shows as the EP jumps around genres quite a bit. There’s kind of two sides, that familiar Salter sound and songwriting, and then a really experimental side.

GREAT NORTH

Fourteen Nights at Sea truly demonstrates a musical intensity and maturity that is rare and unique in a young band. The Melbourne based quintet’s album, Great North features deep textured sounds and beautifully restrained guitar work, creating a seamlessly flowing album and an overall dark atmospheric quality.

Underneath” is a gentle overture, showcasing Pheobe’s sweet vocals which would lull any hardened perspective into cohesion. “Hung on Tight” highlights two of the key strengths of Snakadaktal – Phoebe and Joseph’s tight harmonies, melodically (eloquently interweaving their synthesisers throughout) and vocally.

Snakadaktal Snakadaktal: a prehistoric creature, children’s playtime snack or one of the most promising young indie acts filtering through the Australian Music scene? It is the latter. Post-pubescent outfit, Snakadaktal, were thrust into the spotlight in 2011, after winning the coveted Triple J Unearthed High competition. The band, consisting of Sean Heathcliff (guitar/vocals), Phoebe Cockburn (vocals/synthesizers), Joseph Clough (guitar/ vocals/synthesizers), Jarrah McCarty-Smith (bass/guitar), and Barna Nemeth (drums), scored major airplay and popularity with their first track “Air” and resulting EP Dance, Bear! Dance. The 10-track EP earned them spots on various tours and festivals throughout 2012 and paved the way for the long-awaited upcoming LP, Sleep In The Water – released August 2.

Track 5, “Ghost”, the first single released from Sleep In The Water, is creating hype amongst radio connoisseurs and avid Snakadaktal fans, and epitomises a perfect lead-in track to promote the album. Other standouts include “Sleep” and “Too Soon”, really cementing this young indie outfit as one of Australia’s most promising acts. Sleep In the Water is a sophisticated concoction of tracks and poignantly emphasises the growth this quintet has experienced musically over the past two years. The introductory track “Fall

The sixth album release from the five-piece Pennsylvanian metalcore band August Burns Red, has everything you would expect, loud guitars and drums, screaming vocals, a tonne of distortion, and then it has some you might not. They use some orchestral sounds to slow it down and it fits in pretty well, with the changes not to jarring. I think fans of the genre will defiantly enjoy the album; Creative Captivity was probably the standout for me with some pretty cool guitar work. Not my usual cup of tea, but refreshing nonetheless. ollywood remaking classic films is nothing new, but there seems to be an ongoing trend in remaking classic films and TV shows from the 70s and 80s at present. Perhaps there are no original stories left to be told or maybe it’s our nostalgia for these TV shows and films that we grew up with that leads Hollywood to keep re-booting and remaking these classics for a new generation and era. Not all remakes have great success though, indicating that a winning formula from decades ago, does not always translate into a sure fire hit today. Retro TV Shows such as Knight Rider, The Bionic Woman, Wonder Woman (this pilot didn’t even make it to air), Charlie’s Angels

and Melrose Place have all had a rebooting in the last 10 years and were cancelled during or after their first season. Retro Film remakes (and some Retro TV Shows made into movies) include The Karate Kid, Arthur, Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, The A Team, Dukes of Hazard, Bewitched, Clash Of The Titans & FAME. Now there is a classic example of an epic remake fail. FAME (2009) was not only a terrible remake, but also a terrible movie as a whole. The best part of that night was my friend doing a spectacular Grand Jeté in the Village Cinema car park in honour of the original.

original? The original is the template from which the remake is based upon, so I think comparison is a given.

One of the better remakes I have seen was Footloose 2011. Granted, you can never replace Kevin Bacon, but this remake was just about as good it could get. Several songs from the original soundtrack were used in the film and it stuck very close to the original story – in some instances, the scenes were almost frame for frame, and it worked.

So what is the winning formula for a successful remake? I think there must be elements of the original retained. Fans of the original are looking for familiarity of what made them love the original show or film the first time round. From the opening theme song, keeping the characters the same, to the music or soundtrack. But the success ultimately lies with the story. It has to be smart enough to satisfy old fans nostalgia, and strong enough to hold interest for new ones.

Some say you aren’t supposed to compare a remake to the original film, or TV Show, because they are both great in their own right, for their own era, etc etc... I disagree. How can you not compare a remake to the

People with Asperger’s Syndrome and High Functioning Autism have a bit of an in-joke referring to people without such brain differences as ‘neurotypical’, aka average, in a presumed humourous turn in discrimination. I must admit, I find myself in a similar set of circumstances as a creative type.

My passion for literature, poetry, dance, visual art and live theatre makes me feel outside those with an impassioned zest for AFL, cricket and horse racing because I fail to grasp them, but maybe we can love traditional and alternative pursuits without the labeling. LIGHTNESS OF BEING

PROJECTION ART Melbourne-based projection artist, Ian de Gruchy, whose nocturnal projections magically transformed the Frankston Library and Bayside Cinemas during the recent exUrban Screens projection art festival is both a veteran and an innovator in his field. Loving the transformative and optimistic nature of light, he is always looking at new ways to engage with urban architecture and interior spaces to capture the imagination of audiences.

We pause The day cannot hold What the night contains

From his very first projection project, Suburban Mysteries, in 1981, de Gruchy was hooked on the reaction of audiences to this new medium. “The high when you’re in a public space and can overhear what people are saying…the feedback from the audience is fantastic,” he related viewing projection as a strategy to engage the public. “Projection art is a very immediate thing. It’s aesthetically sumptuous - a kind of magical poetic medium,” he mused. While working with light is, in itself mesmerizing, it’s the combinations of graphics, architecture and interior spaces that intrigue and challenge him. Originally studying architecture, then graphic art, de Gruchy really found his place at the South Australian School of Art when minimalism, experimental art and performance art were burgeoning areas.

“It was a very interesting time to be at art school, “ he recalled. Completing a Diploma of Fine Art in Sculpture, de Gruchy then got involved with the Experimental Art Foundation. Working with slide projectors, he was intrigued by the qualities of projection.

After receiving his Master’s Degree at RMIT in Architecture and Design, de Gruchy taught projection art in several different departments at RMIT over a 20-year period inspiring hundreds of emerging architects and interior designers keen to learn about this groundbreaking art form. Involvement in projection art also provided him with the opportunity to travel around the world from New York to Amsterdam to the Venice Biennale. Being a largely outdoor urban medium, people can choose to engage with the projections or not. It may catch the unsuspecting person’s eye, but it’s not the same experience as an intentional visit to a gallery or exhibition thereby capturing a different kind of audience than other art forms. This is truly public art take it or leave it.

Projection art is a powerful and ever evolving medium that requires constant innovation. Like moths to a flame, it’s a form that’s hard to ignore and magically captivating. Whether it is at next year’s exUrban Screens in Frankston, Melbourne’s Gertrude Street Projection Festival or globetrotting to the next locale, de Gruchy is sure to be found in the limelight of projection art. To see examples of his awe-inspiring installations and public art projects, visit his website at www.artprojection.com.au or keep a keen eye out for his next adventure in projection art. ornington Peninsula Regional Gallery has a remarkable and eclectic group of exhibitions currently on display. Two central exhibitions in the main galleries feature Melbourne-born artists, David Larwill in Ten Year On alongside Lisa Roet’s Monkey Grip. The foyer features Dromana’s Cheryl Osbourne with A Sentient Dream. Spirit of Nature while the café displays Sherrie Knipe’s Comb Over covering the entire gallery in widely diverse artwork.

Mover and shaker, a non-conformist and a groundbreaker, David Larwill was a truly individual voice in the world of Australian contemporary art. Distinctive, colourful, stylized, somewhat primitive figures populate his paintings engendering pathos, humour and irreverence. A Mornington Peninsula resident for much of his life, he was a wellknown larrikin in Somers where he lived and worked. Some of the material for his work came from the flotsam and jetsam at Somers Beach. An active member of his community, he generously contributed artwork to fundraise for the Somers Primary School Art Fair. Despite his high profile in the national and international art world, he remained a down to earth family man.

Melbourne-based artist, Lisa Roet’s passion and commitment to the lives of primates dominates and inspires her work. Her oversized and ultra-realistic sculptures can’t help but evoke a strong feeling of empathy for these remarkable animals. Monkey Grip features Roet’s full range of work including etchings, animation, drawings, photography and sculpture, all of which examine the similarities between primates and humans. Roet is an artist, advocate and researcher whose work looks at science and sociology, morality and responsibility in the interaction between man and environment. Her internationally acclaimed work has brought increased recognition to these amazing

ART

animals whose lives are threatened by human encroachment. While visitors see the larger exhibitions in the main galleries, it would be a mistake to miss the smaller exhibitions and glass cabinets. Every space at the MPRG is carefully crafted to please the eye and appeal to the artistic sensibility in all. Current exhibitions are on display until September 15 at Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, Civic Reserve, Dunns Road, Mornington. 5975 4395 http://mprg. mornpen.vic.gov.au ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

Community art

is alive and well in Frankston Creativity is alive and well in our community. The FAC & Cube 37 Galleries have a packed program for the remaining of 2013 and are squeezing in many requests for exhibition space and events by community arts groups. Each of these community groups have a story and what a better way to present their tales than through the arts.

Baluk Arts current exhibition as part of NAIDOC week Kerrboonool ~ Join Unite is currently being showcased in the FAC Gallery. Check out these stunning pieces before 12 August. Following Baluk is the 2012 Open Exhibition winner, Sabine Amos exploring mandalas and their transformative power. Don’t forget we are currently accepting entries for the very popular 2013 Open Exhibition until 23 August. The artistic talents of another very special group of people will also be in the FAC foyer in October with works from the Art in Dialysis program. Art therapist

Melissa Lucas works with patients on dialysis at Frankston Hospital. This is an extremely rewarding outlet for those who are required to be in hospital for long periods hooked up to machines. There are some exciting art pieces soon to be revealed from these workshops. Crossing over to the Cube 37 gallery we will soon be showcasing amazing high quality works by the highly skilled artisans of the Peninsula Woodturners Guild. Not only are groups wanting to share their art, they are encouraging us all to participate and appreciate the great benefit of creativity and the arts on our mental health. This year 4KBK (For Kids by Kids), a youth led initiative that raises awareness of youth mental health and suicide in our community is back again. Come along and show your support at Cube 37 on Thursday 1 August from 7pm for the exhibition opening and live fundraising auction. They truly are

an inspirational group of young people organising this event to raise the profile of critical issues for young people in our community. All proceeds will be split between Peninsula Headspace, Stepping Stones Adolescent Inpatient Unit at Monash Medical Centre and Beyond Blue. Not only do we have visual arts on offer but an array of performances of course. Don’t miss Oz Opera’s Auslan signed performance of The Barber of Seville in

partnership with Deaf Australia and for those into contemporary dance we have award winning choreographer Shaun Parker coming in to lead a workshop in tandem with the upcoming West End dance hit Happy as Larry on August 7. For further details on any of these programs or exhibitions contact Cube 37 at the Frankston Arts Centre on 9784 1896. TAMMY RYAN & BELINDA COOK

FABULOUS ARTS FORUM Bright ideas, creative connections, enthusiastic artists from all fields and an excellent panel made the Southern Peninsula’s Arts Forum on July 6 a very exciting place to be. Up for discussion was how to make SPAC, a first class theatre venue situated on the grounds of Rosebud Secondary College, more engaged with and accessible to the arts and local communities. Venue Manager Anthea Mackenzie joined actor Steve Bastoni, Arts Producer Trevor Matthews, Mornington Peninsula Shire Manager of Libraries, Arts and Culture, Geoff Carson, Performer, Teacher and Theatre Maker, Carole Patullo and SPAC Board Member Dellie McKenzie to field questions

( 48

PEARL magazine August 2013

from the audience about how to use this largely underutilized venue. After a short break participants joined one of the panel members in a lively round table discussion of a question put to each table. Ideas swirled about like dandelion heads and it was hard for facilitator, Lynda Newton, to wrangle groups to stop and share their ideas. A watershed flowed as MP Cultural Planner, Andrea Ebsworth, furiously recorded ideas. Enthused contributors then ranked the myriad of ideas by perceived importance. All parties are keen to find out the next developmental chapter of SPAC. Stay tuned. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

Bigger and better than ever, the Derinya Art and Craft Exhibition dazzled the crowd with a magnificent variety of art, jewellery, sculpture, craft and hand -hewn furniture. Simon Imrei’s solo guitar and vocals set a mellow tone for the opening evening abuzz with conversations about art. Boutique beer, award winning wine, hot food and good cheer filled the hall. Hard to imagine how they could improve on this latest show.

Director Imara Savage takes on one of Shakespeare’s earliest comedies with style. Sharp banter and comical word-play lure us into a contemporary world where characters are reinvented, individuality is fluid, and bigger themes lie just below the surface.

Internationally acclaimed Bangarra Dance Theatre is Australia’s leading Aboriginal performing arts company. Bringing indigenous cultural stories to life through breathtaking imaginative theatrical dance, Bangarra offers consistently unique performances that capture the imagination of audiences.

Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Morgan Freeman

Kinship opens with the traditional Aboriginal dance Fire (Bangarra means ‘to make fire’ in Wiradjuri). It then flows into Brolga, a creation story based on a totem animal assigned to represent a girl’s clan. Brolga takes the young girl on a spiritual journey exploring the relationship between people, animals and the natural world. The final work, ID examines Aboriginal identity in the 21st century through a dramatic and often humourous narrative.

WHO’S WHO IN SWITCHAROO

Bell Shakespeare Company is notorious for coming up with brilliant modernizations of classic plays, but this time they have a partner in crime. Collaborating with the State Theatre Company of South Australia, they’ll re-imagine Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors. Confusions abound when two couples from radically different backgrounds have identical twin boys on the same day. A wealthy merchant purchases the poor couple’s sons to work as servants to his own boys. A shipwreck tears the family asunder, but they find themselves again in a dodgy border town where more than merchandise is up for trade. Characters are reinvented, redirected and reconnected in a farce that has its fair share of darkness. Exploring identity and metamorphosis, this fast- talking quick-witted production is sure to amuse. The Comedy of Errors plays at Frankston Arts Centre on Saturday, August 17 at 8 pm. Bookings: 9784 1060 or www.thefac.com.au.

In the last 10 years Bayside Film Festival has made a name for itself by celebrating young voices in cinema. This year is no different, but festival director, Richard Moore, knows the local audience is varied in its tastes and has programmed to suit. Running August 28 – August 31 at Palace Cinemas Brighton Bay, its main focus is on documentaries, but the festival also includes world premieres of feature films, digital stories from local students and Jump Cut, a short film competition for 10-26 year olds. Opening night documentary An Iceberger with the Lot – From Bury to Brighton doesn’t take itself too seriously. It is the story of an English ex-pat who moved Down Under, to Brighton, and took up winter ocean swimming with the famous Icebergers. An outsider’s view celebrates something close to home and slightly crazy and it comes together in a film worthy of its opening night status.

He dreams of meeting Lars Ulrich of Metallica, so they vow to make it happen and have some fun along the way. Nothing seems to go to plan, but the finale shows us Tom in his element, not defined by his disability and a hard-core happy ending.

This film ties in with aims of the Youth Documentary Project. Professional directors have worked with students with special needs in the community to create digital stories highlighting issues that are important to them. YDP sessions will screen on the first day of the festival, celebrating diversity of viewpoint and validating these kids as relevant storytellers. Jump Cut is open to young people, locally and abroad, and finalists’ films will be screened on Friday August 29. The 2010 Jump Cut winner went on to win Trop Jnr. this year so the standard is high and the

audience will likely be made up of more than just family and friends. The festival closes with the world premiere of On My Way, the French feature starring Catherine Deneuve and directed by Emmanuelle Bercot. An ex-beauty queen, played by Deneuve, is a bistro owner whose husband is divorcing her for a younger woman. She goes out to run some errands one day and just keeps on driving. This typically French drama/comedy should be a fun finish to a multifaceted festival. Industry Q & A sessions will be held throughout, with the full program released mid August. CATTLEMANS RAIL JAM

he Cattlemans stair set at Mt Buller is a lot bigger than it looks. For mere mortal human beings the oversized steps are hard enough to walk up in a pair of snow boots, let alone imagine launching off and sliding the rails to the flats below. Each year after dark, Buller lights up and hosts the Burton Cattlemans Rail Jam in the Village Square and the mountain comes to life in a super human showdown. Eight Winters ago, the Cattlemans Rail Jam was an invite only event, but these days riders must qualify if they haven’t previously won the event. This season, 60 spots were offered for the qualification, held during the day, but only the top ten qualifiers can compete against previous winners.

With $7000 and a truck load of prizes up for grabs, the competitors put on an amazing show for the ever-growing crowds who cheer on Australia’s wildest rail riders as they push each other to the highest levels. This year Jindabyne’s Jye Kearney came back from a summer off with injuries and took out the $4000 first prize, followed by Cohen Davies in 2nd place with Buller local Cameron Stavely taking 3rd. The 2013 Rail Jam drew the biggest crowds ever reported, with the riders pushing the sport to the next level, spinning on and off the rails, riding the kink, flipping from top to bottom and more. If you ever get the chance to see the event, make sure you head up the mountain and check it out live. It will blow your mind! EDDIE WEARNE / SHED NINE

Push Summit

Review

On Thursday the 11th of July, Impakt Productions attended the 2013 Push Summit. I attended the Live Sound Workshop, in which we learned about the mixing desk, what everything plugs into, and how to get a nice sound in your venue. I, for one, loved gaining the experience that the workshop offered. I also attended the D at Sea performance and Q&A which was amazing. D at Sea was awesome live, and the Q&A was really insightful. He talked to us about his personal experience with and in the music industry and how we should approach getting into our area of interest.

While the endless partying seems idyllic for those of us that may work a nine-to-fiver desk job, the extreme conditions that Chardy must work in take their toll. Jetting from one gig to another, the DJ admits that trying to maintain energy levels is challenging.“It’s from one extreme to another and sometimes I just crash, finding a solid sleeping pattern is one of the hardest things. Every state you go to there are different people hanging out to see you, catch up and have a party.” Somehow, amongst various performances and a sleepless schedule, Chardy has managed to produce not one, but two original chart-topping tracks with Timmy Trumpet in the last year. The first collaboration Sassafras saw the pair team Trumpet’s live instrumentation with a unique track laid down by Chardy, earning them #1 spot on the ARIA Dance Charts.

Not many builders can set aside their tools for a sustainable career in DJ’ing and producing. Then again, not many tradies have been in the music scene for over ten years. Chardy is a disco house, dub and electro DJ, artist, producer and remixer originally hailing from the Peninsula, now topping electro charts worldwide.

“Timmy and I have been mates for a long time and we’d never done a record but talked about it. Sassafras formed in about one session, just one day. The next one, Melbournia took about five months to put together. It was a hard one because Timmy wanted to do that Melbourne sound and I wanted to go much bigger because that sound is so location specific and was only just really picking up a bit. We went ahead and to be quite honest I didn’t think it was going to do as well as it has.”

“It’s all changed now, it’s definitely a lot harder to make it these days” Chardy explains; modestly adding, “I’m not saying I’ve ‘made it’, to be quite honest I’m just doing okay! I’ve definitely gotten better over time and it’s probably only within the last year or so that I’ve managed to get the sound that I’m writing to a semipro level. That’s probably been the hardest part; getting my sound to the level of what the big guns are playing and making overseas.”

Despite Chardy’s hesitation, the track was lapped up by fans in and out of Melbourne, and the following Will Sparks edit shot Melbournia even further up the charts, reaching fans globally with it’s #6 slot on the Beatport charts and smashing #1 on the ARIA Charts.

Indeed, Chardy’s sound has earned him numerous national and international charts appearances,

That’s probably been the hardest part; getting my sound to the level of what the big guns are playing and making overseas.

“Beatport charts can create a real following for you, people log on and through scanning the top tracks they are able to follow DJs on a variety of platforms – Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitter etc. It’s an international platform and compared to the ARIA charts, which are only relevant within Australia, Beatport showcases the top DJs and club tracks from around the world.”

Australia-wide residences at venues such as 161, Sorry Grandma, Billboards and Lady luck to name a few, in addition to closing spots at both the 2010 and 2011 Falls Festival in Lorne. “DJ’ing is obviously not that hard so to speak, but I learnt heaps from playing a lot of dead gigs and clearing a few dance floors in my time…since being signed with Ministry of Sound my bookings and gigs have gone through the roof, it was a huge step for me to find my new home there.”

DAVEYS SATURDAYS

Chardy’s Ministry of Sound deal has seen him score gigs in venues from tropical Bali and Queensland to frosty Tasmania, as well a 15-stop tour for the Ministry of Sound Electro House Session CD promotion. “That was amazing; one big party for three months. There were a lot of mid-week gigs, so I’d be doing Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday non-stop and at one stage I didn’t come home for a month.”

Indeed Chardy was blown away recently when he received a video showing David Guetta playing his very own mix of Rubber Ducky within the electroking’s Ibitha set. “I didn’t actually know about it, some young dudes partying over in Ibitha sent me this clip of Guetta playing it one night and apparently he is playing it in all of his sets. I think that’s the biggest thing to ever happen to me to be honest, it is a huge deal to have some one like that play your record. He obviously liked it and hopefully now he might play another one of my tracks; who knows where it could lead. To have someone with over 44m followers on Facebook playing my work and putting my name out there is just crazy.”

W&W - LIFT OFF! [MAINSTAGE MUSIC] I’m sure you guys are well aware of how in demand this dutch duo are right now. My favourite track to date, providing the sound that W&W are so well known. Showcasing all elements of modern day trance. From huge square leads to big sine kicks. This track I sneakily play in all my sets. But when it drops, there’s nothing sneaky about it.

M i x ta p e of the Month

AUDIEN - WAYFARER [ANJUNABEATS] When I first received this track on promo and listened to it, I instantly got the biggest shiver down my spine. An uplifting trance track that takes the listener on an emotional journey from start to finish. Sure to lift your mood on even the worst of days. 3NCODE - JEBU & MITS [NEON RECORDS] The only new release to feature. These boys are the ones to watch in the next 12 months. Combining an infectious, melodic breakdown with a gnarly drop. This is a track any DJ can add to their sets.

MARK SIXMA - REQUEIM [MAINSTAGE MUSIC] Chilling vocal cuts and a buzzing saw synth line bring a vast amount of darkness to this essential tune. This production has been slotted into every major trance acts set and with one listen... You will find out why.

Best gig played, why? Would have to be after Deorro at our local Friday night, Fribays. The fact that he is known globally for his production and DJing and I was able to meet him and play straight after him is something I will never forget.

Who was/is your inspiration/ influence? My main influence/inspiration is Joel Fletcher, I remember being too young to go clubbing I stumbled across the “Wah Wah Podcast” next thing we knew we were plugging our phones into iPod docks at parties and it happened to be Joel’s Podcast that I fell in love with, next thing I knew I was saving for decks and playing around on every DJ’s old mate Virtual DJ.

If you could collaborate with any artist, who would it be and why?

What’s your opinion on the ITM Top 50 Awards for 2013?

Someone like Shameless or Zoolanda, I really like their style and they’re established producers, you could learn so much from them.

None of the artist’s I voted for made the top 50 to be honest, but at the same time the people that polled in the top spots deserved to be there. It would have been nice to see AJAX poll as he is a pioneer of Melbourne Club Scene, long before I showed interest in EDM and Melbourne music.

Do you remember your first gig? What was it like? Yeah, “Taco Munching Mondays” Local Monday night to unwind for the weekend, I remember it so clearly because my headphones broke before I could play my first song, so scared! Was really cool vibe, house music all night, fishbowls, coronas and everyone catching up.

If you could time travel and tell yourself a tip 3-5 years in the past, what would it be? In terms of DJing, a tip would be to just enjoy it, don’t take it too seriously and don’t burn your bridges with anyone, it’s

funny because there are a lot of politics around with club nights, but all the DJ’s are friendly with one another… So yeah just maintain those friendships, because everyone seems to help each other out now and then. Oh and wait until after year 12 til you start DJing! VCE does not benefit from going out to gigs so much.

If you won $20 Million in Tattslotto, what would you do with the money? Move out of home, I’m pretty sure mum is sick of hearing loud music haha.
