PEARL: As a long-time Peninsula resident, how important are festivals like these for the local area and Aussie music down south in Victoria? REYNE: Very important. I think it’s fantastic. I keep saying to Paul that from just a little school thing it’s now pretty much the only consistent bona fide annual music event on the Peninsula. I reckon he’s done a great job, and it’s a fantastic day out and now I hear people that are considering putting on events saying, “We want to use the Between The Bays model.”

PEARL: You’re playing Between The Bays in February, which will be your third appearance having been a great supporter of the festival since its inception. REYNE: Well, I can’t take much credit for it really. I came into it ‘cos I knew Paul Thompson (the event’s creator) through a school connection, but I’ve seen it since the start and I know how hard they’ve worked, how smart they worked and I know they’ve run it really well. Paul’s a really personable guy and he gets the job done in a really good way.

PEARL: You’re performing alongside Hoodoo Gurus, Troy Casser-Daley and Tim Finn. It’s quite an iconic Aussie bill; do you know the other artists well? REYNE: Yeah, I’m doing a run of shows with the Gurus now. I know Tim and, actually, we’re doing some stuff with Tim and Elvis Costello in New Zealand, coming up. The thing about Australia is that it’s small enough, and if you hang around long enough you pretty much get to know most people and

play on a bill with them at some stage. You just run into people at all these events. PEARL: Your’e doing the Elvis Costello shows as part of A Day On The Green. You’ve done a fair few of them and other festivals over your career? What is it about these festivals that draws you back? REYNE: I love them. They’re great for the crowd, but also for bands and artists. You get to come off stage, sit out the back and catch up with people, with a glass of wine… in a vineyard. It’s a nice atmosphere, Summer in a vineyard. I mean it’s a pretty nice environment to go to work. Between The Bays Music Festival will take place at twilight on Saturday February 23 at a 35 acre rural property at the end of Rickards rd, Moorooduc. A word from the editor...
I remember years ago when I first started playing music in pubs and cafes around the area. It was about 2002, and the first gigs I did were generously given to me by the then owner of Beaches - John Crossin - as a leg up after I’d played the Wednesday Muso Night for a while. As the need for promoting my gigs grew, I remember thinking, “there really is no proper gig guide out there to list my one gig,” and feeling like a small fish in a big pond, in comparison to those magazines and listings in the city. I lamented the lack of a voice for the area and for the great wealth of talent I’d met along the way. I kept thinking, “there must be a way to let everyone know how much amazing stuff is right here on our doorstep.” For a long while that quiet discontent stayed in the back of my mind. When I was approached to be part of PEARL, I immediately remembered those early times and dived at the opportunity to, as we put it, “Join The Revolution”. I wanted to continue on from my work running showcases and open mic nights and help the wider community be ‘in the know’. What I didn’t expect, though, was the reaction PEARL got in those first few months. It wasn’t just the music community, but the visual and performing arts lovers in the community that breathed a sigh of relief as their voice was finally heard. To date, PEARL has interviewed some of the biggest acts in Australian (and sometimes international) music, featured some thoroughly brilliant artists, poets, actors, dance groups and eccentric personalities, spoken with some of the area’s most well respected and successful surfers, skaters, jetskiers, FMX riders, stand-up paddle boarders and adrenalin sporting stars, delved into beer, food and pub culture, heard all about some great young initiatives, establishing our very own Youth section & given away a stack of FREE Cd’s, tickets & exclusive prizes to those who have liked what they’ve read enough to click ‘like’ on Facebook. PEARL has become a real and important part of the fabric of the Peninsula, helping to spread the word, support those at grass roots level as well as larger performers, venues and festivals and most importantly let everyone know just how diverse, vibrant, exciting and unique the Mornington Peninsula and Bayside area is! What’s more, it’s only the first 12 months! Pucifer, playing Melbourne on the same night early next year, challenge the concept of what a band can be. It is the creative subconscious of Maynard James Keenan, well known from the progressive, hard rock powerhouse bands, Tool and A Perfect Circle. There have been multiple contributors on the band’s latest album, Conditions of My Parole, forming a diverse collection of originals, as well as a cover of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. A Pucifier live show leads their audience through laughter, tears and reflective enlightenment, all in one night’s performance. It’s a musically driven evening that merges technology, quirky characters and comedy in what can best be described as “an anarchist dinner theatre”. Certainly, with a mind like Keenan behind it, the live show will be nothing short of visually and musically encapsulating. And lovers of alternative… Modern metal band Bring Me the Horizon and alternative, extremely experimental band Pucifier are both set to hit Melbourne this February for what promises to be two crazy shows. It’s not often that scene kids, screamo fans and metal-heads can agree on a band, but after their explosive rise in popularity, Bring Me the Horizon have cemented themselves as the dominant force in the scene. Their third studio album, There Is A Hell Believe Me I’ve Seen It, debuted at number one on the Australian music charts, with their new album, Sempiternal, set to do the same upon its release in early 2013. The good news? Fans can expect to hear some new music at their live shows. Diverse influences from ambient music, electronic music and pop can be heard on Sempiternal, which has been written and produced throughout 2012. Ever wondered where the name ‘Bring Me The Horizon’ came from? The name, according to lead singer Oliver Skyes comes from the movie Pirates Of The Caribbean. “Right at the end of the film - it might even be the very last line - Johnny Depp says, “Bring me that horizon.” That was really inspiring,” says Skyes. Back in 2003 when the movie was released Skyes was still living at home with his parents in Sheffield, England, where he and the rest of the band would dream of touring and traveling around the rest of England and the world. Little did they know then that this dream would come true!

As far as electronic music duos go, Sydney born Nick Littlemore and Peter Mayes have ticked quite a few boxes on their success bucket list. As PNAU they’ve enjoyed ARIA-winning success, widespread radio airplay for singles like Wild Strawberries, Embrace and Baby, been part of the critically acclaimed Empire Of The Sun project with Luke Steele (of The Sleepy Jacksons) and recorded an album of pieced together material from Elton John’s back catalogue that has impressed even the staunchest of Elton fans. While in the studio working on the forthcoming Empire Of The Sun album, PEARL spoke with Mayes about the band and this year’s Pyramid Rock Festival set. PEARL: You teamed up Nick Littlemore at the end of your school years, and began performing together in the 90s. Tell us about your first recording effort, Fractured Geometric Spaces Made Of Light? MAYES: Well it wasn’t that good! (laughs). It was just something we mainly did in my parent’s office. We moved to other studios to finish it, but it was basically a bunch of kids learning how to make a record. It wasn’t until Sambanova that we put a proper album out. PEARL: That album, Sambanova, was humbly recorded in a bedroom studio but ended up going on to receive great success - ARIA award winning success, at that. What’s it like for you guys to create something in such a small intimate setting and have it go on to reach thousands of people and gain commercial success? MAYES: . When I think about it, it is a little strange to think that record was largely done in a small home studio, but I think most electronic music records are created that way anyway. Especially now with technology the way it is, you can do so much on a laptop. You don’t really need to be in million dollar studios now, even pop records are created in strange back rooms and small environments. PEARL: As you’ve gone along, you’re sound has changed from record to record. Do you keep up with the trends in music or do you try and find obscure untapped records to listen to? MAYES: The funny thing is that we don’t really listen to much electronic or dance music. I don’t pay much attention to what’s happening in the clubs, cause if you’re into something that’s been out for a couple of months then you’ve already
INTERVIEW work with. It was an incredible experience and with its debut at #1 in the UK, it’s great for us as we haven’t really been able
missed it. We both try and make stuff that’s a bit more timeless and hopefully classic. PEARL: Following the self-titled album in 2007, the Empire Of The Sun project came to fruition in collaboration with Luke Steele. How has that band changed your approach to music making? MAYES: Well, with each record you learn and I think if you listen to PNAU albums chronologically, you can see our development as writers and making the Empire Of The Sun album is an extension of that. I mean, it’s an amazing privilege mostly cause we get to work with Luke. That’s why we did the first one and that’s why we’re doing this one. It’s all about him and his vocal, and it’s an incredible instrument to have at our disposal. PEARL: This year you released PNAU Vs Elton John – Good Morning To The Night, an album of reworked material from Elton’s back catalogue, and have gone on since to perform onstage with him in Ibiza and recently in Sydney. What’s it like to record and perform with such an artist, and get to know him intimately, going through his music catalogue? MAYES: It’s amazing. And it was amazing. He’s a music legend, so of course it is. We’re not really traditional musicians, as well, so we’re a little out of our depth there, but we’re so glad we could do the album and that he chose us to
to break through in the UK yet. PEARL: You’re playing Pyramid Rock Festival this New Years Eve? It should be a welcome change from the studio? MAYES: Totally. We did quite a few Australian PNAU shows last year, but we haven’t really done a lot this year so I’m really looking forward to getting out of the studio and on stage. Getting up there, seeing the reaction and really connecting with an audience; when it works you just can’t replicate that feeling. PEARL: What can fans expect from the live show at Pyramid? MAYES: We’re going to present it more a live band kind of show, so it’s going to be fun. You know, that’s the way music is supposed to be played. There’ll be five of us onstage this time, all of us playing instruments and I’m looking forward to people seeing it. RED HOT CHOCOLATE
The Red Hot Summer Tour will see some of Australian rock’s most impressive musicians come together for a collection of regional shows around the country between January and March next year. In what’s being already dubbed one of 2013’s must-see concert series, the tour lineup will be headed up by Jimmy Barnes with Dragon, Ian Moss and the Baby Animals also on board along the way. Perhaps the most anticipated act to appear on the Red Hot Summer Tour bill, though, will be one of the great Aussie bands of the 90s, Chocolate Starfish, who have recently reformed after 13 years in limbo. PEARL briefly caught up with eccentric front man Adam Thompson, in the lead up to the tour which kicks of in Tumut, NSW, on January 5. The Chocolate Starfish gained a reputation as an influential force in the largely competitive live music scene of the 90s, known for their high-energy performances and showmanship wherever they gigged. Following their commercial success with the smash hits Mountain, Four Letter Word and their cover of the Carly Simon classic, You’re So Vain, the band took a break – or as they call it in rock and roll, went on ‘hiatus’ – for what turned into more than 10 years. According to Thompson, it was the “turbulent lifestyle” that led to the band’s temporary parting of ways. “Like being a teenager, there comes a time when one needs to leave the family to find themselves,” he says. “It was never really that we broke up officially, though. More that we just took a break from touring every week! (laughs)” A founding member of the band, alongside John Nixon on Bass, Darren Danielson on Drums, Normal Falvo on Keyboards and Zoran Romich on Guitar, Thompson explains it was Romish’s tragic death earlier this year that was the final push to get the band back onstage. Having announced in 2011 that the ‘Starfish’ would reform to work on material in the studio, Thompson and Romish had worked on a collection of tracks in the months since. Now, with new guitarist Tim Henwood (formerly of The Rogue Traders, The Androids and James Reyne Band), the plans to maintain the Romish’s influence and legacy are coming to fruition. “Tim’s tone is remarkably similar,” says Thompson. “It’s been a great way to honour Zoran’s vision for the new material.” The band’s initial success was built upon their live performance experience, now commonly referred to by many fans as ‘an experience in itself’. Having performed mostly headline shows, the Australian festival scene hasn’t seen the brand of showmanship and theatrics brought on by the Starfish, with rural venues on the Red Hot Summer Tour set to be exposed for the first time to the band’s unique performance. “The Starfish were always at a level where we could do our own shows, and people always just seemed to respond to the sets,” says Thompson. “A live show has got to have moments of brilliance, and I’ve always tried to inject a bit into the delivery; take people on a musical rollercoaster they wont forget!” The new album is set to be on sale by the time the tour kicks off, with old fans set to not be disappointed. Thompson promises the record, “will be as diverse and intriguing” as their previous work. “It’ll definitely be edgy, and cover a lot of ground musically, for sure.” Hear the material first hand at The Red Hot Summer Tour, coming to Morningstar Estate on January 20, 2013, with tickets on sale now through ticketmaster. ONE HELLUVA ACAPELLA GROUP Glancing at this year’s festival “fashion” and witnessing the ever-rising hemline of denim cut-offs, you could be forgiven for believing that all notions of class and style have well and truly gone out the window. Take a look at the synched waistlines, immaculate hair and polished heels cladding the four young ladies that make up The Nymphs however, and you’ll see that not only are these girls a picture of style, but also pack a serious punch of modern girl sass. The Nymphs joined forces back in 2005, warbling behind Melbourne band The Melodics at their debut gig. Consisting of Kel Day, Rebekah Chapman, Jane Hendry and Clare Hendry, The Nymphs carry a unique sound that ranges from barbershop a capella with a 40’s jazz flare, to modern alternative folk/pop. Writing and performing together for eight years, Jane Hendry muses that the combination of time and experience in performing with a plethora of musicians during the RocKwiz tours and beyond has forced the group to flourish in more than one way. “We have really gelled together – when we perform we move together, we breathe together…musically speaking our songwriting has matured and our capacity to collaborate during the songwriting process has grown. On the performance side of things we’ve really found our feet on the stage – we love putting on a good show and entertaining a crowd.” Indeed, The Nymphs are sure to please crowds based on appearances alone,

coordinating their hair, make-up, dresses and shoes in 40’s flare with a modern twist. Such vibrancy and vintage influence carries through into the music of The Nymphs seamlessly, yet Hendry assures that these aesthetics extend beyond a mere tip of the hat to the fashions and tunes of times gone. “The music of that era, in particular that of amazing vocal groups such as The Mills Brothers, The Ink Spots, The Boswell Sisters and The Andrews Sisters, is something that for us, puts the ‘oo’ in croon! The arrangements were so good, and the vocal performances outstanding. We have picked some of our favourite tunes from that era and slotted them into our set to share them with audiences again today. In terms of original material, The Nymphs like to get a bit cheeky in writing music that both compliments and contrasts with the feminine style of their get-up. “I would say that our visual aesthetic shapes our writing, however in a range of ways. For some songs we have definitely ‘written in the style of’ the songs of yesteryear, but for others the influence is less obvious. Sometimes the visual aesthetic is at odds with the song, which is a juxtaposition we quite like to explore too!” This juxtaposition is craftily explored in the description of The Nymphs as being akin to “The Andrews Sisters backing Nick Cave at the Tote.” Indeed, there seems to be a distinct ‘Melbourne grit’ or edginess to the girls’ music, modernizing their act from a barbershop quartet to an attention grabbing
INTERVIEW and witty performance. “The edginess is a deliberate choice and I think a product of our personalities… we are modern women reinterpreting a vintage sound and look, we are bringing something else – there are more layers, there’s more depth to us. We’re not simply trying to recreate the 40s – we’re trying to create something new, using what we know and love as a starting point. In terms of drawing inspiration from Melbourne specifically, Hendry explains that The Nymphs love to put an element of the city’s live music scene into each of their shows. “We love playing at venues like the Old Bar, the Northcote Social Club and The Retreat. It sort of seems counter-intuitive, but we work really well in the old rock-n-roll pubs and
venues.” Saturday, December 22 will see one of Frankston’s most eclectic venues Bartiste play host to The Nymphs, introducing the ladies with a theatrical performance from the barbershop by the Bartiste Collective Theatrical Group. The venue has recently undergone some changes with new owner Carlo Reo-Dero stepping in. Building upon the diverse catalogue of acts already in place, Reo-Dero hopes to pack the venue’s calendar with art exhibitions, burlesque nights, live funk, soul, blues, reggae music and much more on their new expanded stage. The festival season is upon us, with the Red Hill, Tamworth and Whittlesea festivals all taking place over the coming months. There’ll be cavalcades, awards nights and big concerts on football fields – all the usual signifiers of a music scene that tends to remain stuck in the 1970s (or perhaps the 50s). I can’t tell you how frustrating it is, as a lover of what I consider to be ‘real’ country music, to witness the coverage that Tamworth in particular attracts thanks to the occasional live cross on ‘Sunrise’ or ‘Today’ (or ‘after the weather’ on the nightly news). Any viewer could be forgiven for leaving country music to the old guys in big hats and young blonde starlets – that’s largely the audience courted by Australian mainstream country and perpetuated by the media. Luckily, the world is getting smaller, and the American alt-country artists that have for some time now provided a rootsy alternative to the ‘Nashville-sound’ are finding their way to our shores on a regular basis. This year saw visits from Ryan Adams, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams and Eilen Jewell, and 2013 tours have already been announced for by the likes of Elizabeth Cook, Wilco and Robert Plant (the former Led Zeppelin frontman, now reinvented as an Americana innovator). I’m sure Australian audiences will turn out in droves for these acts (particularly down here in Melbourne) and with any luck, their success will trickle through to the Australian artists following that same, far-from-the-mainstream muse. Over the past year (well, almost a year) that’s been one of my goals as a Pearl writer – to bring my colleagues and contemporaries at the left-field end of country music to your attention. Folks like Jordie Lane, The Weeping Willows, The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats and New Settlement Road have been covered on these pages, mainly due to their connections to our local community. But really they’re just the tip of the ice-berg. As a regular columnist, it’s hard to avoid the temptation to compile an annual ‘best of’ compilation, highlighting the finest music released in my genre over the past twelve months. I’ve decided not to do this –
not because it’s predictable, nor because I myself released a record this year (that I’m quite fond of) – but rather because the folks over at www.unpaved.com.au have done such an excellent job of compiling a definitive list of the Australian artists that you should seek out and listen to. A few weeks ago they launched their annual readers poll, and whilst you needn’t take much notice of the votes (it turned into a bit of a popularity contest) I highly recommend you note the names and the records in all categories. Enjoy the summer folks. And if you’re looking for a new year’s resolution, make it to learn the banjo or upright bass. PEARL MAG AT MORNINGTON’S AUSTRALIA DAY CELEBRATION This Australia Day there will be entertainment and activities taking place all over the Peninsula, from Mount Eliza all the way down to Sorrento. On offer will be free BBQs and breakfasts, markets, fun runs and face painting; something for everyone to take part in on the day we celebrate our country. For Mount Eliza residents, the community centre will host activities from 9.30am starting with a free sausage sizzle, followed by the day’s opening ceremony. On the foreshore in Hastings, you can also find some breakfast – a free one at that – as well as skating, a community market and a free teddy bear’s picnic for the kids until 1pm. If you’d like to head to The Western Port Historical Society’s open day, that’s just up the road on Marine Parade, to run until 3pm. Those down on the Southern Peninsula wont miss out on festivities, with sausage sizzles and community breakfasts at most locations, as well as a stack of kids entertainment including Clown Magic Balloon tying, Jumping Castles, cup cake decorating, animal farms, face painting and more! For footy fanatics, there will be a handball competition held as well as a netball goal competition at Dromana, with Rosebud even playing host to 2 fun runs – one 5.3km and one 10km – for the fitness folk! contemporary rock and jazz outfit, Middle Of The Road, at Rosebud, The Vincents, Calmer Miles and Legend at Rye and other great local acts at Mount Eliza and Sorrento. The highlight of the day, though, is set to be the celebrations in Mornington with Katsuma from Moshi Monsters and the Hillview Quarries Street Parade, along with rides and family entertainment, set to please the kids while people sit back and enjoy the feast of local talent on the PEARL Magazine ‘Live & Local’ Stage! With over 7 hours of live music planned, the day will feature the foot stomping bluegrass of the Quarry
Mountain Dead Rats, currently on tour promoting their album Bloodhound Killed My Squeezebox, as well as 20yr old Alana Deutrom, a singer/songwriter and guitarist set to bring the glossy, modern pop and raw acoustic hooks to the stage in support of her EP, Zero Gravity. Also performing on the day will be local funky rock act Blackwater Riff and our own editor Simon Imrei, who’ll be playing songs off his debut album Branching Inward, a blues/soul/funky collection currently available for pre-order and due for release in early 2013. As the night sets in, the ‘Absolutely Aussie’ show will take the stage, featuring 80s rock icons Brian Mannix (from Uncanny Xmen), Dale Ryder (from Boom Crash Opera) and Scott Carne (from Kids In The Kitchen). These three performers, along with an all-star band, will be bringing back their hits and performing Aussie crowd favourites to fans as the sun sets before the fireworks display takes place down at Schnapper Point, after 9pm. THE NEW FACE OF PORTSEA HOTEL Locals and holidaymakers, young and old, feast upon locally sought produce and deliciously prepared summer meals. A DAY ON THE GREEN
November 24, 2012 @ Rochford Wines An Australian rock legend feast was on offer at Rochford on the November 24. For old rockers like me, this was a chance to see old school rock n roll and bring back a few memories of the days when pubs really supported live music. Almost a sell-out, the display was to be savoured mostly by the more experienced (not old) punters, many of whom had followed these bands in their heyday. Talking with random fans, everyone had their favourite but the common ground was how well this lineup suited so many people and I would wager that there was a time that all these acts had songs in the charts at the same time. Backstage, wine and water were the chosen drinks, a far cry from the old day’s drink rider of a few beers in a bucket and a pie after soundcheck. The caterers served roasted veggies, tofu, fish curry and the bands used cutlery. BOOM CRASH OPERA Kicking off the smorgasbord of rock was Boom Crash Opera and they set the tone for the day, working their way through their classic tunes. Dale Ryder is losing nothing and only improving with age, much like the wine that was being consumed in large quantities by the swelling crowd. It was already evident that many people had commenced proceedings well before they arrived. The hangovers being created would cause a few regrets the next day, I am sure. Songs included Onion Skin, The Best Thing and Dancing In The Storm. A slick performance. Tight, and best of all.. Loud! JAMES REYNE Ripping through the Australian Crawl songs and his solo tunes, James is a pro onstage. Years of experience have left him in control of the crowd, knowing how to construct a set list for maximum impact, and he has surrounded himself with a killer band. James’ vocals still seem to be improving and he may be spending a bit of time at the gym. First comment from the girls down the front when James walked on stage was ‘Oh my god, look at his muscles.’ Not sure, but i’m sure i’ve seen him more than 30 times, and I don’t think i’ve ever seen a bad gig. Mr Reliable! Classic tunes from my youth that I never tire of.

THE ANGELS WITH DAVE GLEESON Being a massive fan of The Angels for years, this was the band I had come to see. Not that I dislike any of the bands on the bill, in fact, I would go and see any of them whenever they played. This is the fourth time I have seen The Angels with this lineup and they are going from strength to strength. Perhaps they are getting to know each more now, having been together for a while and doing tours and recording an album. They were tight, the interaction between the guys is subtle and effective and Dave Gleeson now just seems to really fit. This set included more classic songs than stuff from the new album, which I think was what people wanted to hear at this sort of gig. The crowd reaction was probably the best of the day, the security guys at the front had a bit of trouble trying to keep people in front of their seats and stop them lurching forward. It seemed like they almost gave up trying during Am I Ever Gonna See Your Face Again’. Hearing this crowd responding to the chorus was awesome. Dave is complete bundle of energy on stage and brings new life to this band. His enthusiasm is contagious and rubs off onto the other guys and even the very reserved Mr Damage (Rick Brewster) had more than one quirky smile on his face during the set. The guys obviously loved the gig and the nervous energy they had backstage prior helped them put on a show that really did blow the crowd away. I was fortunate to be backstage before, during and after the show and hang around with the band, which gave me a real insight into their preparation. I was even up on stage to get some photos during their set. Being up on stage whilst one of my all-time favourite bands were playing was massive, a real thrill. I spoke with more random punters afterwards and the feedback was all positive and even the fans wearing 20yr old tour t-shirts couldn’t speak highly enough of what they just seen and heard. BABY ANIMALS Must be hard to follow the Angels after such a good set, but Suze DeMarchi walked out and grabbed the crowd by the throat, and delivered a set that displayed her vocal talents, as well as the talent of this band. I haven’t seen the Baby Animals for a while and Suze’s vocals just tore through me. Such

power. Mick Skelton is an awesome drummer, having played with many of Australia’s finest over the years. Mick is such a good fit for this band, fast, powerful and some awesome fills. Mick and Dario (Bass) held court showing what a rhythm section should do in a quality band. Dave Leslie carved up the guitar parts and like many of the performers today, revelled in the big, responsive crowd. This was a very impressive performance. Great to see the Baby Animals back live and I hope to see more of them soon. THE HOODOO GURUS Hit after hit after hit! When you see a band like this live, and you know most of the words to all of the songs, you realise how much they have contributed to Australian music. I guess

you do not get voted into the ARIA Hall of Fame without dishing out a lot of quality work over a long time. ‘What’s my scene’; ‘Like WOW! Wipeout’; ‘Miss Freelove’; ‘Bittersweet’; ‘Come Anytime’ and a couple of newer tracks all got a run today and were performed faultlessly. Headlining a gig with the talent on offer is testament to the Guru’s standing in the Australian Music scene. A massive day, one of the highlights of my musical and photographic journey. A huge thank you to The Angels for the access to this gig and allowing me into the inner sanctum. An awesome experience. GARY BRADSHAW

Howdy folks, your editor here. Whilst Pat Elliget is taking a little summer break, putting the final touches on the first Blues At The Briars Festival in February 2013, I thought I’d step in tell you about a local Peninsula media personality, flying the flag for the blues week in week out. If you’ve listened to ‘your local community radio’, 98.7 RPP FM, on a Thursday evening after 10pm before, you’d well know the blues music presented on The Blues Shack, by one of the station’s inaugural presenters Ray Reid. Reid, who started playing music at 16, has enjoyed over 40yrs on stage, playing everything from reggae to country and blues. He’s currently a member of VM - A Van Morrsion Tribute, as well as the Shadows Tribute ‘Harry’s Webb’, private function outfit Coolroom and resident Somers Yacht Club band, The Jets, but also has a background in theatre. Reid joined RPP FM at its inception, occupying a place on the airwaves until 1989, when family commitments forced him to take an extended break. It wasn’t until around 12 months ago that he began doing the odd fill-in slot, eventually establishing The Blues Shack, and returning to a full-time weekly slot. A member of the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society, the objective of the show from the start was to support the Australian blues music scene as much as possible, offering personal and program involvement in events, providing interviews with local and premier artists and, when possible, inviting artists into the station for on-air performance. It’s not a casual adage, as unlike other blues programs Reid doesn’t play overseas artists unless there’s a special reason or tribute to be paid to a noteworthy international bluesman. In the initial stages of the forthcoming Blues At The Briars Festival’s planning, Reid contacted organisers and established RPP as the official radio station for the event, with a live broadcast and a feed straight from the stage to be broadcast on the airwaves. Going one step further, Reid and RPP have organized for most of the artists performing at the event to perform live-to-air sets on his program over the coming weeks, leading up to the festival. Given the world-class quality of the acts, it’s a real coup for The Blues Shack and RPP, with each artist donating their time, free of charge, in support of the festival. Already having had Blues Mountain, Jimi Hocking and Marisa Quigley in studio, the forthcoming weeks will include Melbourne outfit Dukesy & The Hazzards (Dec 13), Blues Deluxe (Dec 20), Alex Burns (Dec 27), Rob Papp (Jan 3), Lloyd Spiegel (Jan 10) and Kevin Buckingham (Jan 17). The final couple of weeks will be firstly a recap of past performances on January 24, before a very special performance by Fiona Boyes, Geoff Achison and Claude hay in the final 2-hour presentation, kicking off the event. Tune in to 98.7FM every Thursday night from 10pm to hear some of the country’s finest blues performers and get a taste for what will be an exciting festival in February! LOCAL BLUES LOVERS UNITE
The Peninsula has long played host to some world-class blues musicians and songwriters. For the most part, it’s been in fleeting stopovers on tour or at occasional residencies surrounding a festival appearance over in Queenscliff or further down the coast. In 2013, however, Peninsula residents will be treated to 12 premier blues acts, on the one stage, on the same day for the inaugural Blues At The Briars Festival. The only current live blues event held in our area, the festival boasts a stellar line-up including Blues Deluxe, Fiona Boyes, Claude Hay, Marisa Quigley and Blues Mountain, not to mention industry stalwarts Geoff Achison, Lloyd Spiegel, Rob Pappalardo and headliner Jimi Hocking. In addition to the 11 hours of music, the day will feature an array of local Peninsula beer, wine and culinary offerings, all aiming to establish an annual event to showcase fine Australian blues as well as the beauty and diversity of the Peninsula to those traveling from outside the area. There will also be various activities for the kids, including face painting, balloons tying, and a soccer clinic. The day will be supported by The Bendigo Bank and will raise funds for Operation New Start; a program catering for youth aged 13-17 classified as ‘at risk’. The initiative takes the young adults out of school for a term to teach life skills and coping strategies, as well as set achievable goals. These are kids in danger of dropping out of school and/or society, with many having suffered trauma, loss and/or come from difficult family circumstances. Challenging them in a predominantly outdoor environment takes them out of the comfort zone and refocuses them in a supportive environment. The program is a joint initiative with Deecd and Victoria Police, with community mental health support and the Reach Foundation utilised for program delivery as well. Eight children at a time, from all over the Peninsula, partake in activities like caving, CFA training, rock climbing, canoeing, surfing and more, celebrating their achievements with a graduation ceremony at the completion of events. The Blues At The Briars soft drink stall will donate its profits to the New Start Program, as they hope to raise funds for a new bus for the kids. Also present at the event will be the SES, who will be fundraising, parking cars for the event and have a static display on site. The festival has also approached local scout groups to establish a recycling program at the event. So, grab your picnic blanket, and get set to head down in February for an unforgettable day of music, set against the backdrop of the picturesque Briars Homestead. With the onset of summer, school/uni holidays and all kinds of parties and events popping up on the calendar, there’s a raft of choice available when deciding how – and where – to spend your big nights this summer. It seems, everywhere you look, people are adding guest bands/DJs to bills, putting on massive events and throwing up ticket prices that threaten to take away your hard earned! The Bay Hotel in Mornington have a different approach, deciding to keep it simple and ‘not fix what isn’t broken’ this summer. MERRY CHRISTMAS… DAD?
Looking for a present for Dad? Here is a list of beers that you can put together for Christmas that will make Dad happy. If your Dad loves a BBQ, try a couple of the Belgium Chimay Trappist range. A few enterprising Monks started brewing the Chimay beer back in 1862, with a range of 3 mainstream beers that they are famous for; Chimay Red, Chimay White and Chimay Blue. Now, these beers aren’t for the faint hearted with an alcohol content of between 7% to 9% - normal mainstream beer ranges between 4.5% and 5% - so make sure Dad stays awake on Christmas Day! My favourite is the Chimay Red, with an alcohol content of 7%, as I find the other two a little too strong. The second brew to review this month is from the brewers in Brunswick - Thunder Road Brewery. These guys are all about developing the perfect beer and are not far from it with the beers I have tasted. My pick is the Full Steam Pale Lager, as I think it’s so good to see a brewery being courageous and venturing into the world of lagers rather than just doing ales. In reality there are basically two categories of beer; ales or lager. There are many more hybrid styles inside these two categories, but the main difference between ales and lagers is the type of yeast and fermentation temperature used in the brewing process. The fermentation process for ale is in a warm environment, usually between 15-20 degrees Celsius, while lagers in a colder environment between 7-11 degrees. Ales are traditionally consumed at cellar temperature – 12-14 degrees in England – but in Australia we love our beer cold and ales are normally served between 4-7 degrees. Smaller breweries will choose ales rather than lagers due to the fermentation time difference between the two, with ales usually requiring about half the fermentation time of lagers. Thunder Road have done a great job with this lager, and with a bold taste and a full malt flavour, I could drink this one all day. I gave it 5 out of 5. That said, they have a wide range of other beers at Thunder Road, from God’s Lager to a Shamrock Dark Lager, that will delight your taste buds and make Dad a very happy man on Christmas Day. Keep an eye out for special seasonal beers as well. If you’re looking for a fine dining establishment and want to try something different than one of the Peninsula’s vineyards or resorts, you simply can’t ignore Biscottini in Mornington for a relaxed breakfast or lunch with family or friends.

First cab off the rank, on the December 22 Parkway Drive will be blowing minds and bursting eardrums at Festival Hall. Tickets are still available if you want in on what may be a perfect pre-Christmas show. A major piece of news that came down like an iron-coated bombshell full of awesome is that Kiss themselves will be bringing their Monster Tour to Etihad Stadium on March 5. Yes, you’re read right, KISS. As if that wasn’t enough, they will also be bringing two more barrels of face melting madness in the form of their support acts, Motley Crue and Thin Lizzy. You would be out of your little metal mind to miss this one.
This beautifully presented café/restaurant offers a plethora of noteworthy menu options, popular with their loyal clientele, some of which frequent the venue daily for breakfast and lunch, never tiring of the extensive & regularly changing fare. The menu has an Italian edge, reflecting owners Angela and Elio Giucastro’s heritage, but also caters for the kids with their own more orthodox menu, prepared within minutes of ordering. Biscottini is fully licensed, with many great wines and beers on offer, many acquired from the local hinterland. Chefs Shaun and Elio endeavour to utilise local seasonal produce in their pizzas, pastas and risottos, with their Italian mothers also getting involved - as it is in most Italian families - with personal recipes. Popular favourites are Elio’s ‘Salt and Pepper Calamari’, Shaun’s ‘Beef Salad’ and Christina’s ‘Risotto Balls and Italian Doughnuts.’
On the February 9, Oh, Sleeper (supported by For All Eternity, Storm The Sky and a local act) will be rocking out at the Pier Live. Later down the track, Grinspoon will be playing at a couple of venues down this way as part of their Black Rabbits tour in April. They will head to both Pier Live and the Ferntree Gully Hotel, so keep you’re eye out for that. On January 14 and 15, Nightwish will be bringing their siren’s call to the Palace Theatre. Tickets for the January 14 show are sold out, but you still have a chance to catch their second show. On the February 28, Sum 41 and Billy Talent will be blasting away at the Palace Theatre. How about some awesome cover bands? On December 21, the Australian Metallica Show – Kill ’Em All, joined by British Steel Australia and Iron Madness will be ramming Christmas cheer and pure metal into ears for the End Of The World Xmas Party at the Pier Live. Tickets are $20 each, available only from the venue itself. If I have my way, you shall see me there. Looking ahead, we have a few other noteworthy shows next year. On the January 18 January, Alestorm will be doing a live DVD shoot in their End Of The World Tour at the HiFi. Tickets are still available and I shall be therewith every other metal head who loves pirates and the chance to have their mugs gracing screens all over the world, when the DVD comes out.

In their annual ode to the end of summer, St. Kilda residents are gearing up for the everpopular St. Kilda Festival, held from February 2 to 10. Dubbed “Australia’s Best Free Musical Festival”, the 9 day event attracts hundreds of thousands Melbournians, showcasing local artists and musical talent. It all culminates on the last day – Sunday – where St. Kilda streets close and acts such as Juggernaut DJs, Bluejuice and Client Liason will entertain across 5 stages. More talent to be announced.

QUEENSCLIFF MUSIC FESTIVAL Following a cracking weekend of live original music, I returned to our side of the bay having learned quite a bit about ‘The Bizzarro Peninsula’. Firstly, about the rumors that the residents needing to eat children to maintain there ‘undead’ state, I found no evidence. Secondly - and more importantly - they know how to put on a damn good music festival! The Queenscliff Music Festival doesn’t have a really big party scene like some of the other festivals - it’s low on crazy costumes and high on fold out chairs - but one thing that they can hang their hat on is knowing the local music scene and being smart enough to book artists within it. Friday was the best example, with so much talent on display. Loon Lake opened the whole show and was a sweet soundtrack for those walking through the gates. The first full set I got along too, I couldn’t even see the band. That was mostly due to their massive beards! You guessed it, I’m talking about… The Beards, who with their songs about everything beard-ly pretty much put on the gig of the festival. They had the crowd laughing and singing along, with even the girls in front of me tying their hair around there chin and trying to get some kind of beard effect happening. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard out from Melbourne were another standout on Friday, with such a high level of energy throughout making the whole crowd pulse along with them. I was also lucky enough to catch the end of Jackson Firebird and hear them bust out their single Cock Rockin’ to a pretty small crowd –

everyone was over at The Cat Empire… suckers! – before another awesome local Kingswood rocked it hard into Saturday and beyond. Saturday Morning started with a Bee Gees tribute show, with our local favourites Wishful taking part and doing a well-received cover of Massachusetts. The Blues Train was another great feature of the festival, sending everyone back in time with Howlin’ Steam Train’s set. The combination of both the band and train chugging along was insane and the energy was just pumping through the carriage. The sweet Lisa Mitchell had an amazing set, with plenty of sing-alongs in there as well, with her humble Aus Idol days and the attached stigma well and truly behind her. The aforementioned Wishful provided some good light music on Sunday Morning, fitting for the hangover that many surely had. I’m pretty sure they charmed some new followers with their show before the festival served up some more pretty ladies (sorry Sam from Wishful). The light electro-pop of Owl Eyes and bluesy/ country twang of Mia Dyson kept the vibe right up, whilst elsewhere Missy Higgins was welcomed back once again with her new material. My weekend ended with me, hunched over asleep on the ferry with my head in my lap, strangely looking like I was in the emergency brace position, much to the concern of all around me! But, of the weekend and QMF, it’s a great music festival, rich in diversity, creativity and local talent. Let’s get one on our side now!

HUSKY In an era of relentless self-promotion and ambiguous claim to fame, one can easily drown beneath the crushing wave of indie folk/pop bands emerging from everywhere between a 20-something year old’s bedroom, to the studios of every major record label. With ample avenues for exposure, it is refreshing to encounter the refined and considered work of the Melbourne boys that make up Husky, whose fully realized album has earned them the ears and hearts of discerning music lovers globally. 2008 saw front man Husky Gawenda join forces with his cousin and keys player Gideon Preiss, bassist Evan Tweedie and drummer Luke Collins. Beyond Gawenda and Preiss’ familial connection, Tweedie explains that each of the boys had played together in the Melbourne scene prior to joining forces under the moniker of Husky. “We are all really different in what we grew up listening to, but also share a love for all that folk influence -the harmonies, The Beach Boys- that’s a shared musical vocabulary for all of us.” From reggae to jazz, each band member brought their own experience to the table in the creation of the rich harmonies and delicate songwriting of Forever So, which was entirely independent and self-funded by the boys. “In hindsight it was great, but there were some moments where, because it was just our voices, there were no outside opinions coming in, and we were like ‘maybe this is terrible and we’re on the wrong track’. That thought definitely plays on your mind from time to time without that third person’s insight.” Using a cleared out bungalow in the backyard of Gawenda’s Melbourne home, the boys ran a series of cords and leads through the garden and into the house to power their make-shift studio. The resulting body of work is a hybrid of folk harmonies and organic acoustic timbres. “We wanted to make an album. Not a bunch of tracks put together I suppose. Our goal was to make the album flow really seamlessly. And hopefully the people who listen to the record feel that, and feel it as an album as opposed to a bunch of songs put together,” reflects Tweedie. Interestingly, it was one of the last tracks to be recorded for the album that propelled Husky to fame. Tweedie chuckles as he

recalls, “Husk rang me up and was kind of freaking out, he’d spoken to Gids as well, and he was like ‘we need a single!’…So the three of us got together and wrote two tunes that day which ended up on the album, History’s Door and Hundred Dollar Suit.” In a twist of fate, this last minute addition of History’s Door saw Husky win the dooropening ticket of a Triple J Unearthed Award in 2011. Propelled from a Melbourne bunker onto festival stages around Australia, Husky soon caught international attention. “Our manager went over to the states and while meeting with Sub-Pop to pitch another band, she handed over our album in passing. A week or two later we were contacted and they were really excited about the record and were wondering if we wanted to discuss this. Just by chance, two of the Sub Pop staff members were coming down to Melbourne with another band, and we were like ‘okay we have to put on a show for them.’ I guess it was kind of a secret show, we announced it on the day, just so they could come along and meet us and see that we could actually play, that we weren’t fools!” Indeed, the signing of Husky to Sup Pop records marks a huge milestone for Australian music, as the band is the first Aussie act to be signed with the Seattlebased label synonymous with Nirvana, Soundgarden, The Shins, Fleet Foxes, and Beach House. Recently returning to the homeland after a very busy year of touring internationally, Tweedie notes that much of the audience in international shows comprised of dedicated fans, or followers of Sub Pop. “The good thing that we hold onto when we play small international shows is that there’s always a few really die hard fans that might travel a few hours to come and see us…being with Sub Pop, I guess it’s kind of like a football team in that you actually have supporters of the label, you’ll meet these people overseas who tell you that they are ‘Sub Pop fans’ and follow recently signed artists.” Attracting a larger crowd in Australia, Husky will be playing to a sold-out Lorne Falls Festival crowd. Also joining Husky at the Lorne new years festival will be this year’s winner of the coveted Triple J Unearthed award, Hayden Calnin. If Husky’s success is anything to go by, we should certainly keep a tab on Calnin in the year to come. MATILDA HEGGIE

Brisbane-based singer/ songwriter, Deena, is moving mountains with her gorgeous laidback pop music and the release of Lone Wolf. With a hint of heartfelt folk and quirkiness, the album presents twelve uniquely thoughtprovoking tracks and lyrics, with beautifully emotive guitar. The album kicks off with a pop/rock-infused track titled Monday Morning, with the easy listening Come Over and Dear Friend sounding wonderfully airy and carefree. These songs deliver messages of love, passion and sadness. The album highlight would have to be Wunderlust - a lyrical expedition in which Deena’s smooth jazzy vocal tone and catchy melodies make for something quite memorable. Each track is a little bag of its own magic, waiting to be heard, loved and enjoyed. See Deena when she comes to town (The Bay) in early Jan!
Melbourne four-piece Twelve Foot Ninja’s debut has just about every music style on it; Hardcore? Check, Rock? Of course, Reggae? Yeh mon, but does it have Middle Eastern melodic influences? Smartass, but track two should cover it. I’m talking to myself because I think the review for the album should be just as nuts as the content, and it’s pretty crazy! A good quick description for Silent Machine would be it’s “nothing you’ll expect”, or “musical schitzo, with hardcore rock tourette’s” works? Starting off, they don’t go slow or easie in with something safe. It’s straight into showing off the serious musicianship that’s over the whole album. Late in the record, they smack you upside with some really sweet songwriting and a more traditional song structure. These guys are really talented. Silent Machine sounds like it was fun to make, and it shows.
(FAT POSSUM / SECRET SERVICE) Fremantle based indie-poppers San Cisco, have finally released their highly anticipated self titled debut album. Following on from the hype of their popular single Awkward, the band continue to entice and entertain with their low-fi indie pop tunes. The album features fun, kooky synths and guitar licks that are sure to make this album a summer staple for every Sunday session/road trip. Fred Astair and No Friends are high energy make-youwant-to-dance kind of tracks that conjure up that summer festival spirit. The band takes it down a notch with intermittent slow tracks such as Hunter, showcasing Jordi Davieson’s delightfully warm vocals and highlighting the bands true musicality. Overall the album is a psychedelic, energetic, light filled tasty little package that is sure to be a summer favourite. 4 / 5 JESSICA SCUDAMORE

(MOS) The first time I listened to this album I was chillin’ by the pool, suds in hand, basking in the afternoon sun when I discovered that I had ‘misplaced’ the cd cover. Fast forward an hour of frustration and as I decided to stop looking for it, there it was. The first place I should have looked and the last place I did. Anyway, through this somewhat annoying experience the music was never out of my mind. An awesome journey and the best soundtrack to a random summer’s day I’ve heard in ages. Jam packed with glorious and gorgeous tunes, including tracks by The Temper Trap, Panama, Paloma Faith, Florence & The Machine, The Presets, The Bamboos, Lana Del Rey, Van She, Bloc Party and Hot Chip. 3. RAW Fedde Le Grand The next offering from Fedde is released December 24; one hell of a Xmas present for dancefloors. A cracker of a track - as the title suggests - it is a raw dance track that you cannot help but move to. 4 / 5 4. THERE IT IS Tujamo Todays house music sounds coupled with a catchy sample of years ago in tag teams whomp there it is and you have a stormer of a club track the original mix is very much a dub style with loads of bottom end and driving bass where the david jones mix is a lot more commercial room friendly with loads of lyrics, horns and basslines more an original remix which works very well. 4.5 / 5 5. BOOGIE DOWN Pablo Calamari & DCUP Re-sampling the old Al Jarreau disco classic, Pablo Calamari has done a great job. The original mix is similar to the original 70s version with a better bass line and some sample re works. The Tenzin remix is a complete new working; beat structure which as a track is great but the vocals are too few, hidden and too late in the track for my liking. The original gets the nod for me. 3.5 / 5

A LEFT OF CENTRE LOOK AT ALL THE RIGHT THINGS, WITH KOG
The other week I got to see two big gigs in the one week. The first was Coldplay at Etihad Stadium and the second was Radiohead at Rod Laver Arena. Two gigs from two bands who are very similar in some ways and very different in others. Coldplay were brilliant, but stadium gigs don’t do it for them. Unless you’re up the very front or very tall, standing in the field like a true punter can be both strenuous and frustrating. Being a little taller than Danny De Vito, I spent most of the gig on my tippy toes. My calves were in a lot of pain. Sure they look great now, but they were in a lot of pain. It also makes people suss when you have to crouch in between encores just to get blood circulation back into the lower half of your body. Later that week Radiohead hit the stage like seasoned veterans. Having discovered these guys only two weeks after they had toured the country last time in 2004, I was itching to see if they lived up to all the hype. Radiohead are an interesting band. They’re either going through a rock phase or an electronic phase. Unfortunately I caught them during their electronic phase, which made every appearance of a guitar or piano even more special. While Coldplay churned out the same greatest hits set they have performed for the last 3 months, Radiohead played new songs they haven’t recorded yet and tunes they had yet to play in Australia this time around. This made for both some placidly confused and overwhelmingly joyous moments, and herein lies the difference between these two bands. At one stage in each of their careers, both were touted as the next great band in rock’s pantheon of gods - Radiohead after the release Ok Computer (Paranoid Android, No Surprises) and Coldplay following their 2002 smash A Rush Of Blood To The Head (Clocks, The Scientist, In My Place) - but both responded to this expectation in completely different ways. Radiohead said, “No thanks”, and made an album (Kid A) that had no singles and barely any guitars, purely for their own satisfaction. Coldplay made X&Y, probably their weakest album and one they admit was a piece they thought they had to make rather than one they wanted to. Coldplay’s self depreciating front man, Chris Martin, has always said his band was a watered down ‘diet coke’ version of Radiohead, but he also seems to vigorously pursue his place at the same table with Bono, Jagger and Paul McCartney, while Radiohead’s Thom Yorke has rejected the idea that his band is even classified as ‘Rock’ at all and will ironically be put down as one of Rock n Rolls greatest innovators. PENINSULA CINEMAS - A SUMMER OF FINE FILMS This Summer, Peninsula Cinemas is offering up a theatrical feast, with an impressive bunch of films due for release over December and January. December 26 sees the release of one of the most anticipated films of the year, J R R Tolken’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The series will, as per Lord Of The Rings, contains a few movies, all shot within a short time frame and directed by Peter Jackson. Also on offer, following the madness of Xmas and New Year’s Eve, will be The Life Of Pi, released on January 1. The film is an American adventure/drama, based on Yann Martel’s 2001 novel of the same name, telling the story of a 16-year old boy named Piscine Molitor “Pi” Patel, who gets stranded in a lifeboat after a shipwreck in which his family dies, with a

This classic children’s story has been translated into a Tony Award winning musical full of pathos, drama and intrigue. The Secret Garden follows the story of ten- year old Mary Lennox. Living in India with her parents in an English ex patriots colony, she wakes one morning to find her parents and all the other English residents have been killed by cholera. She’s quickly transported to her Uncles’ mansion in Yorkshire without being given the slightest explanation. Her life changes further in this new setting as she has to adapt to a colourful cast of characters who are less than warm to welcome her. It’s not until she discovers a long lost cousin

2012 has been an exceptionally good year in Peninsula arts. World- class gallery exhibitions, theatre and arts programs from traditional to the outer edge of arty, Peninsula screen gems and local arts festivals have inspired the Peninsula. Our local galleries have held stimulating exhibitions month after month. We are going from strength to strength in producing, promoting and enjoying arts on the Peninsula. It has been a real pleasure to meet, interview and write about an incredibly varied array of visual artists, writers, photographers, sculptors, actors, dancers, and proprietors of arts establishments. Being Arts Editor is about more than just writing and editing. It’s about connecting audiences with the arts. A bit of sleuthing is required to discover all the hidden gems in the Peninsula arts scene. At times the stories come to me, but I often have to go looking and the thrill is often in the chase. In wrapping up the year, I’d like to thank all the amazing arts-related people I’ve met and had the pleasure of working with. Art Haven is a brand new artists’ collective on the Mornington Peninsula aiming to connect like-minded artists in a communal space in which they can teach, learn, socialize, work and sell their art. Hoping to form a network of creative minds, Art Haven members wish to share their ideas and inspiration with each other in a supportive and nurturing studio space. To this end, they offer art classes in all mediums in an encouraging and non-judgmental environment providing positive feedback and direction. Currently, Art Haven offers nine different classes a week catering to all ages and abilities from beginners to advanced. They want to expand their program next year bringing in high calibre visiting and local artists. Tuition

Artist, Karen Erasmus, is in the enviable position of working at her dream job as a children’s book illustrator. From her little studio in Mt. Eliza, Erasmus creates the most exquisite picture book characters. A mother of three girls and former primary school teacher, she says, “I’ve always liked doing children – centred pictures. It’s exactly what I wanted to do when I left the illustration course, but everyone said it was too hard.” Her passion paid off after completing that course. She sent some of her portfolio illustrations to several publishers. Hachette Publishing loved her style and has hired her to illustrate three books. The first one, “A Night Before Christmas” has just come out. Combining her contemporary illustration with the traditional story brings a modern Aussie flavour to the book. Her style captures the innocence and playfulness of childhood in a very sweet and accessible way.
Prior to illustrating books, Erasmus had exhibited in art shows around the Peninsula winning some prizes and gaining a reputation for her remarkably realistic portraits in charcoal, pastel, watercolours and acrylic. Moving to Australia from England eight years ago, Erasmus has clearly found her calling in picture books. That said, she’s happy to accept commissions doing spot illustrations for posters, cards, invitations and any other child – centred work. PHENOMENAL PROGRAM FOR 2013 Frankston Art Centre’s VIP launch of the 2013 Program on Wednesday, November 28 delightfully combined music, comedy, film and dance. As the theatre filled, the audience was abuzz with anticipation. Virtuoso guitarists, the Grigoryan brothers opened the evening with a gorgeous instrumental number. Actress and comedienne, Evelyn Krape hosted the event. Her quirky monologue and interpretive dance routine had the audience in stitches. The evening closed with a brilliant performance by Melbourne’ Ballet’s Principal Dancer, Sharon Fernandez. Once again, Manager, Robin Batt, has chosen an eclectic and varied mix of performances. Her continued bravery in taking risks with some of those choices is to be commended. Next year’s line up caters to all age groups offering an exceptionally diverse program.

Aboriginal and Modern Art Gallery of Australia (AMAGOA) is the largest travelling Aboriginal art show in Australia. Representing over sixty artists Australia wide, AMAGOA’s travelling exhibitions feature some 200 distinctive works across a wide array of artistic styles. Sorrento and Peninsula residents are in for a treat when AMAGOA comes to town from January 23, 2013 until January 30, 2013. AMAGOA has been taking their art on the road for four years delivering art to its audience, though they also have a private gallery in South Yarra. FOCUS ON PRIZE WINNING CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHER UP TO Award winning Melbourne-based photographer, Tobias Titz, is exhibiting his striking black and white portrait exhibition, Martumili Artists on the Curved Wall Gallery at the Frankston Arts Centre. From a remote region of the Great Sandy Desert in Western Australia, Martumili artists have shared in the creative process etching images of their country into Polaroid film in a collaborative creation with the photographer. Tobias Titz was one of four joint winners in the Moran Contemporary Photography Prize 2012. He also won the Museums and Galleries National Awards 2012 in the temporary exhibitions category. Three of his portraits will be illuminating the light boxes in White Street bringing the faces of these Indigenous artists into the streets of Frankston. Martulmili Artists is on display until January 31, 2013.

It’s been an exciting year, the new arts and culture strategy was adopted by Council in September and is soon to be published. It is currently available from the Shire’s website http://www.mornpen. vic.gov.au/ Let’s close 2012 by reviewing some of the many local and celebratory events; festivals, performances, exhibitions, markets, fairs, talks and workshops, films, dance and music we have enjoyed. Of the Peninsula’s 720 kilometres of 44 towns and villages there has been sharing and collecting of local stories, histories and
authors voices, writing groups established, ‘poetry bombing’ events, anthologies published and regular ‘Live & Local’ readings held. The choirs and singing groups and musical theatre productions presented in halls, theatres and radio studios. In July, we welcomed the first of a three year Orchestra Victoria program of classical music tuition for our youth. This year sees the 6th Peninsula Summer Music Festival with a wonderful program of musical talent to catch at the closing of one year and the beginning of another. The Peninsula Short Film Festival and acting school, a great new initiative, with so many wonderful actors living on the peninsula we have the opportunity to learn from the best. There is life drawing sessions held from Sorrento, Red Hill, Rosebud to Mornington. Paint-out trips from Point Nepean to Mount Eliza, Flinders and Baxter and everywhere in between. The growing trail of artists’ studios opens to the public along with a variety of styles on display at any one of the Peninsula’s galleries. The Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery (MPRG) and its long standing reputation for presenting museum and contemporary visions in visual art, craft and sculpture have had a big year with more to come. For June 2013 and October 2014 the gallery has secured the ‘Archibald’ prize exhibition from the Art Gallery of NSW. Subsequently proposals are for a broad stroke of the brush with our towns and villages invited to produce something that would befit the visit of this esteemed exhibition. A highlight of the June 2013 program will be the Oak Hill Community Cooperative and Gallery who will be expanding on their annual ‘Little Archies’ show and in partnership with the Mornington Chamber of Commerce will collaborate a display of artworks in shop windows. The Communities that Care Youth teams have been working with communities on skate park improvements & design, visual arts, music and dance events. My parting words for the year is get into the cultural landscape, partake of our creative and cultural industries. Buy handmade for Christmas! Have music with your lunch, take a walk around a sculpture park, enjoy art with your wine and contemplate one of our many artisan’s mixed visions. Use that handcrafted piece of glass or ceramics and feel connected to the maker. At the head of a highly motivated and energetic team is Director, Jane Alexander who likens being a gallery director to being the conductor of an orchestra. She directs, encourages and supports her staff. A hands - on director, she works incredibly hard to make sure every aspect of an exhibition or program is considered. She likes to keep her finger of the pulse of all that goes on. Alexander has been the driving force in bringing consistently high standard programs and exhibitions to the MPRG. This year’s landmark Roy Lichtenstein: Pop Remix exhibition was a huge success. Last year’s splendid Sea of Dreams exhibition, curated by Alexander and Senior Curator, Rodney James, was widely attended and appreciated. As a result of meticulous planning, serious
persistence, first class reputation building and a touch of luck, Alexander and team have managed to procure the Archibald Prize at the MPRG for 2013 and 2014 as its exclusive Victorian venue. This will be the first time the MPRG has hosted this exhibition. The Art Gallery of New South Wales is very particular about which galleries receive their exhibition and only a gallery with a first class reputation and the ability ‘to deliver’ hosts it. Under Alexander’s direction the gallery is making all kinds of new changes. Programs such as this year’s Meet the Artists talk for the National Works on Paper exhibition, Live Music at the MPRG and Young at Art were three new ideas green lighted by Alexander and run by the outstanding Olimpia Rosenblum, Education and Public Programs Coordinator. The gallery is also in the process of updating its website, reconfiguring gallery space and rebranding its logo. The MPRG has come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1971 tucked away in a little council owned house on Vancouver Street exhibiting in two rooms. Thanks to the Mornington Peninsula Shire for funding and supporting a now first class gallery in a spectacular setting. If you haven’t been to the MPRG yet, go. YOUTH SHINE AT ROTARY ART SHOW For forty - one years the Rotary Club of Mornington’s annual art show has exhibited an awe- inspiring array of artists across the spectrum from emerging to established. Some have come from across the nation and others from around the corner, but especially impressive this year is a crop of local secondary school VCE student artists. Two particular standouts are Bethany Walravens and Laine Sacuzzo, both from Toorak College. Their work is mature and insightful beyond their years. Walravens created a work entitled Vielliessement (French for aging). She states, “I wanted to portray the physical change that is experienced as we grow and the things that define us at different times… I am also delving slightly into the way our past motives can influence our future selves.” Sacuzzo’s work, A Plastic Life, pictures three fractured faces of a young girl. Could it represent the disintegration of the feminine through pressures to be beautiful at any cost? These are only two of many extraordinarily talented
student artists whose work is worth a long look. On the other end of the professional spectrum is feature artist, Jayne Henderson, a Victorian painter of iconic coastal scenes and bush landscapes whose work is consistently popular. Artwork in pen and ink, watercolour, oil, acrylic, and mixed media are for sale. All money raised from this show goes to help worthy charities locally and abroad. LIMITED EDITIONS PRINTS NOW AVAILABLE To celebrate the first 35 years of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, The Surfworld Museum in Torquay set up a commemorative display of memorabilia which was on display for 12 months. As part of that display, Balnarring artist and portrait painter, Ron Roach produced a triptych in oil and acrylic to capture the winner for each of those years. Assisted by Bob Smith, Rip Curl historian, who sourced relevant material, Ron spent most of 2006 creating his work. The final piece was put in place after the Easter of 2007 when Taj Burrow won that event. The three panels, each measuring 1.2m x 1.8 m, are currently on display at the Ron Roach Gallery in Balnarring. This was another massive event organized by the iMPAKt FReeZA committee, supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Youth Services, featuring a great line-up of local Post-Hardcore/ Metalcore bands. Tyabb. Thanks all for a fantastic night, especially all those who attended, went hard at it and made it a safe and successful night. Bryce Van Hoof of Rosebud has been given the chance of a lifetime to compete in the British Superbike Championship (BSB) in the Superstock 1000 class for 2013 with Quelch BSD Motorsport on a Kawasaki ZX10. This opportunity is a life goal and is a credit to his dedication, commitment and support he gets from family and friends. Bryce has been competing in the Australian Superbike Series for the passed 4 yrs, and this season was his first on a 1000cc machine in Prostock 1000 category where he placed 9th without competing in the season’s final round. He also placed 2nd in the Vic Road Race Championship in Prostock 1000 & 3rd in the Superbike category. This opportunity is a massive step for Bryce’s career as he will be moving to the UK from January and won’t be returning home until early December at this stage. He will be competing in 12 rounds of the British Championship and also 2 Rounds of the Spanish Championship. It will be a busy schedule for Bryce as he will also be testing in Spain and the UK before the start of the BSB season in April. Bryce is very excited for the challenges and experiences that lie ahead of him. Unfortunately this will not be a cheap endeavour for Bryce and his family and they will be holding a trivia/fundraising event to raise money to help him along through the season. NATIONAL SUCCESS FOR OUR LOCAL MP BODYBOARDING CLUB The terrific run for Mornington Peninsula & Victorian Bodyboarding continues with an amazing effort at the recent National Bodyboard Titles, in Kiama on the NSW South Coast. The Mornington Peninsula Bodyboarders Club came together to form and organize the Victorian Team, generated from the hugely successful Vic State Titles in October. This team consisted of fourteen riders, all of whom fared extremely well in the testing small conditions. Taking out first places in Grand Masters and Senior Mens was Steve Watson winning his fourth National Gong, and Adam Morrison in his first Senior Mens National event. For the entire event waiting period, the surf didn’t get above 2ft and taking into consideration Team Vic was much taller and bulkier in build than the rest of the states - due to surfing consistent big and heavy waves back on the Mornington Peninsula - we did extremely well. In a lot of incidences, Team Vic was seeded in either the first heat or last heat, surfing against the 1st or 2nd seed and for a team consisting of 14 people, up against over 200 other surfers, results were fantastic. Victoria should be proud of the professionalism and sportsmanship of every member of the team, with no late night parting, sore losers or other indiscretions, like some of the other teams. “It was an epic feeling of pride and relief when I realized I had

sealed the final with my last wave,” says Adam Morrison, the Mornington Peninsula local who became National Senior Mens Champion at the Nationals. “The support was amazing from the MPBC and VIC Team and as the siren went to end the final, an ecstatic, fully clothed Matt Taylor jumped in the water to congratulate me! It was a truly awesome moment for me and the entire team.” Morrison went on to say, “This was (the team’s) most successful Nationals to date, with every member raising the bar and getting great results. Steve Watson did another tremendous job all week, taking out back-to-back National Titles in Grand Masters. Well done old mate!” Now more motivated than ever to hit 2013 hard, Morrison will be going for great results, as he adds a National Title to his 4 consecutive State Titles and continues to turn heads in the broader Bodyboard Industry. The success is a true testament to the growth and popularity of the Mornington Peninsula Bodyboarders Club, who has been carving a new path in the industry, setting a new trends and having an amazing time doing so. JAMO: I’ve been skating for 5yrs now, but I’ve loved extreme sports from a young age. I was originally more interested in surfing and snowboarding, but I started skating inspired by Bart Simpson, of all people. I still had the instant support from Mum and Dad. PEARL: Favourite skateboarders? JAMO: Probably Cory Kennedy, Mike Mo Capaldi, Shane O’neill and Nick Tucker. PEARL: Favourite trick or moment on a board? JAMO: Favourite trick would be a Backside Bigflip, but there’s a heap of stuff that I enjoy. I am constantly motivated when I’m skating, knowing there is always something you can improve on and do better, and always something new to try and be creative with.

PEARL: You come from a family of five brothers and a sister, all surfers. How was it growing up surfing with the family? HALLAM: It was great because all of our family outings were down to the beach. My older brother, Ben, was a huge influence, pushing my surfing a lot and its good to see my dad still out there having a good time with all the kids.
PEARL: You had a big 21st party a couple of weeks back, the same day you won the open division of the Peninsula Board Riders Club contest. Tell us about that day? HALLAM: Yeah, that day was epic! Sun was out, surf was pumping and everything just seemed to work out for me. I won the event, scored a 10 and had really good party with all my mates. You couldn’t ask for a better day! PEARL: You are pushing your surfing in many directions as a competitor, as a small wave air guy but also towing to some big slabs. What do you enjoy the most in surfing? HALLAM: I definitely enjoy big slabs the mos. There is no better feeling than a big barrel, they have the most consequence and give you a huge adrenaline rush. PEARL: You live in a house down the coast known as “The Knightclub”, with two other sponsored surfers who have been interviewed in previous issues of PEARL; Caiden Fowler and Adam Morris. Do these guys push you in the surf? HALLAM: Yeah they push my surfing more than anyone. We’re all really competitive, especially out in the more hollow stuff. There is no pulling back when your mates are out there watching.

PEARL: Do you have any funny memories or stories from the knightclub or any dirt on your house mates? HALLAM: Well, I can’t tell you how they got their nicknames, but I can tell you that they both have a thing for wearing my socks, t-shirts and pretty much ALL of my clothes. It’s weird! PEARL: By the time people are reading this, you’ll be about to leave for Hawaii to surf the infamous ‘North Shore’ for a few weeks. What is the plan there? THE BLACK GYPSIES: AUSTRALIA’S ANSWER TO BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB?
If you have only the time to listen to one song by Melbourne band The Black Gypsies, make it Revelations. The band’s EP title track was produced by The Living End’s Chris Cheney and is a provocative reminder of what makes rock music great. A rising and falling tangle of noisy guitars held in line by a steady beat and catchy bass line, its vocals strain unashamedly to relieve some anguish. More likely than not, this powerful track will floor you and force you to create the time to listen to the rest of the four-track EP. The man behind the madness is 18-year-old Cale Mason who provides vocals, guitar and bass on the EP. Mason started playing at six years of age and writing at 15. By 17, he had attracted the attention of Chris Cheney and dropped out of school to focus on writing and recording Revelations at Red Door Sounds, assisted only by Ryan Caesar (formerly of Children Collide) on drums. Listening to his four-track creation, it is clear Mason’s musical influences – the likes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Queens of the Stone Age, Led Zeppelin and The Brian Jonestown Massacre – have lent themselves to him willingly as The Black Gypsies’ sound is a synthesis of assurance and command. Spirit in Search opens the EP with composed but confident vocals and swirling guitars that wouldn’t be out of place on a BJM record or The Dandy Warhols’ debut. This wellcrafted track assures you that Mason is not only entirely comfortable with
song-writing and how he applies his voice to his creations, but that this comes naturally to him. Nothing is overreached, and nothing is overdone. At 2:48 in length, For the Sun is the shortest track on the EP but packs a punch with its percussion-heavy pick up in tempo. Meandering guitars are here replaced with repetition of riffs; an apt lead up to the EP’s title track. In the vein of BRMC, God’s Gonna Cut You Down weaves an almost-Western, anecdotal ribbon through a darker plain. A deep valley forms: jangling guitars fall into it, and Mason’s voice rises up atop a platform of fuzzy guitars to see out the lyrically-inspired closer of the EP. With impressive connections to the Australian music industry already, and a sound mature beyond their years, The Black Gypsies already seem destined for something great. Here is a band that has successfully fashioned sounds from a niche of American and British artists to break the standardized mould of Australia’s current rock scene. With plans to tour and release a new EP in 2013, and aspirations to record a full-length album and relocate to the US beyond that, the next couple of years look to be busy - and promising - for The Black Gypsies.
ROSE GPO NYE It’s been another great year for locals President Roots, with their second full-length album Feeling Fooled released to the public to widespread acclaim. The folk-rock outfit have been regulars around the festival circuit and the Peninsula, and return to their second home, The Rose GPO, for two special shows in December. December 15 sees the full ‘Roots’ band play a the GPO’s Christmas Bash, with doors open from 8pm and plenty of festive cheer set to creep in to even the most down-trodden of alt-country ballads. SAY HELLO TO CORABI
Singer/guitarist John Corabi has worked with a (marshall) stack of bands, including Angora, The Scream, Union, ESP, Ratt and more, but is best known for his stint in the heavy metal powerhouse Mötley Crüe, in the 90s. Following lead singer Vince Neil’s departure in 1992, Corabi was hired to record the band’s self-titled album and went on to appear on the subsequent EP Quaternary. His
time in the band ended when Neil returned in 1997, but Corabi’s stint reportedly gave the songs “a heavier edge and a new lease on life”, according to bassist Nikki Sixx. Every Thursday night, The Bay Hotel in Mornington plays host to Plugged In, a showcase featuring a diverse range of live and local music live on stage. SIZE MATTERS... RETURN TO BEACHES THIS JANUARY Originally a product of Bob Spencer’s ‘Weekend Warriors’ program, Size Matters has evolved into a good time party band that appeals to the more experienced pub rockers. Covering mainly classic 80s and 90s tunes, the 6-piece rock outfit enjoys a near full house residency at Beaches in Mornington. The members of the band are all 40+ and play the tunes that featured in their youth, set to appeal to people of similar vintage and classic music lovers a bit younger. Having male and female lead vocals allows Size Matters to cover bands from ACDC to Pat Benatar, the Baby Animals, Led Zeppelin, Australian Crawl, the
Hoodoo Gurus and The Angels. This band is purely for fun, no big egos, no rock star ambitions.
