RICK IS ‘NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP!’ If you’re a member of Generation Y, chances are you have a vague memory of a Rick Astley song you may have heard on the radio in between your BMX rides when you were about five or six years old. If you’re a bit older – or indeed a GenY with a knack for remembering hits of the late 80s – you’d know the name well, as one of the success stories coming from production trio Stock Aitken Waterman, alongside Jason Donovan, Kylie Minogue, Bananarama and many more. Now, some 25 years since his breakthrough single Never Gonna Give You Up burst onto high rotation radio and gained No.1 status in 25 countries worldwide, Rick Astley is coming to our shores to show Australian audiences what he’s been up to since, as well as belt out his late 80s/ early 90s hits. Rick Astley’s musical career began in the pubs and clubs of northern England, playing soul music and Beatles/Shadows covers. In 1985, whilst playing drums and singing in a cover band, he was approached by record producer Pete Waterman and persuaded to move to London to work in PWL Studios. It was an offer that would include albums published by RCA Records, but initially involved Astley being the studio ‘tea boy’, as he learnt the recording ropes. Bringing Mike Stock and Matt Aitken into the collaborations, the team recorded Astley’s first solo offering Never Gonna Give You Up on New Years Day 1987, releasing the song in late ’88 to widespread acclaim. Astley’s rich, deep voice paired with the catchy dance-pop nature of Stock Aitken Waterman’s production was an immediate success, sending the song to the top of the British charts for five weeks and making it the year’s highest selling single. In addition to the UK success, the song topped charts in the US, Australia and Germany – the first of 13 worldwide Top 30 hit singles - making Astley a household name within months. The debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, went on to sell 15.2 million copies worldwide, containing a cover of Nat King Cole’s When I Fall In Love and his second US no.1 hit Together Forever. Perhaps one of the most staggering of statistics; Astley was in the UK Top 40 every week for the first six months of his career. The second album, Hold Me In Your Arms was released in January 1989, with a subsequent world tour later that year to 15 countries, including the UK, US, Australia and Japan. By the end of the tour, though, Astley was tiring of constant negative press surrounding his partnership with Stock Aitken Waterman, with the press dubbing him “a puppet” and attacking his credibility as a writer. This is despite his breakthrough album containing five self-penned tunes. He went on to release two more studio albums, Free and the more soul based Body And Soul, but with the latter not charting in the UK and only performing well on adult-contemporary charts, he went into premature retirement in 1993, just as his total record sales worldwide hit 40million. Continuing to write and record music throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium, Astley focused on family life until his return to the music world with Keep It Turned On, released in 2002. Then, in 2005, he released the album, Portrait, in which he covered soul standards Vincent, Nature Boy and Close To You, but it was the Internet that brought Astley back into the global spotlight in 2007. This was care of the meme phenomenon, Rickrolling, where users were tricked into watching the video of the breakthrough hit Never Gonna Give You Up when following a link that claimed to be something else. The phenomenon went on to earn Astley hundreds of million YouTube views, prompting RCA Records to release a greatest hits album. In December, Peninsula fans will get the chance to enjoy all his hits, completely live with a 5-piece band at the Chelsea Heights Hotel. It’s a show and tour that will undoubtedly feature some new material from Astley’s forthcoming – as yet untitled – new album, as well as his current single, Superman. Don’t miss the opportunity to see one of the most well known pop stars on the planet in a rare Australian performance of hit songs and memories. Rick Astley plays the Chelsea Heights Hotel on Saturday December 1. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster and the venue, with doors opening at 8pm. RED HOT

BARNESY

Australia’s regional towns are set to explode as they play host to some of the country’s greatest rock icons for the Red Hot Summer Tour Rock Extravaganza. The tour, kicking off in January and continuing through until March 2013, showcases its biggest line-up yet, featuring Jimmy Barnes, Baby Animals, Ian Moss, Dragon and Chocolate Starfish. While The Red Hot Summer Tour will be spreading its wings across a range of rural venues in New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia, Mornington Peninsula punters will be able to enjoy the Rock Extravaganza on Saturday January 20 at the well-seasoned performance grounds of Morning Star Estate. The venue is no stranger to rock legend headliner Jimmy Barnes, nor the Red Hot Summer Tour, which last touched down at Morning Star Estate in 2011. Speaking with Barnes ahead of the tour about what drew him back to the gig, he confesses his love for playing outdoors in the summer time. Whilst this seems a bit of a no-brainer, he explains that musical venues not only reflect the climate, but also the culture and people of Australia. Casting back to the 70s, punters had the choice of crowded pubs or large entertainment centres when attending gigs, which left a gap in the market for people who wanted to enjoy music up close, have a drink and not risk being roughed up. “Wineries are just an extension of the pub scene. It’s different, but it’s also really great as these venues offer a space where, if people want to drink they can, if they want to bring their families and sit on a blanket they can and if they want to get up front in the mosh they can do that too. Australian pub rock doesn’t mean you have to be jammed up and uncomfortable.” While the family friendly venues are an obvious draw card to The Red Hot Summer Aussie Rock Extravaganza, Barnes’ special guest line-up of rock legends will also generate a huge pull-factor for the festival. “As important it is that my band is good, we want to bring a great show that’s memorable to the audience, there shouldn’t be a weak spot in the show. The audience should have been having a great day and then it’s just a matter of us taking them and lifting them up even higher.” Indeed, while Fellow Cold Chisel member Ian Moss will be showcasing his own versatile music career, Baby Animals will be reinforcing once more that girls can rock just as hard as the boys, the iconic Dragon will be proving why Australians enjoy claiming Kiwi talent for their own, and Chocolate Starfish will be delivering the concert showmanship that marks them as one of the country’s most energetic bands. “All those bands are all great mates of mine and they are all fantastic, have a great history and they will compliment each other. For a small country we have a sh*tload of great bands, and part of that is because we have a great live scene.” Barnes’ longstanding career in the Australian pub rock scene has seen him collaborate with many other greats, recently recording Lazy for the Deep Purple Re-Machined: A Tribute to Machine Head – alongside other contributors Metallica, Iron Maiden, Carlos Santana and Joe Bonamassa – and re-visiting Too Much Ain’t Enough Love with Bonamassa for the guitarist’s latest album. With such experience and renown, it would be easy to lay back and simply enjoy the status of being a historical Australian cultural figure, yet for Barnes, the audience has been a driving force for constant development. “The Australian public have inspired me to be a better person, songwriter, and guitar player over the years. It’s about growth, sharing and respect and it’s a two-way street; I learn from them and they learn from me.” Indeed Barnes will spend the latter part of 2012 at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, mentoring on singing rock and live performance, in addition to honing his own skills in guitar, songwriting and poetry. “My son studied there for four years and got a degree, and while I was over there visiting him I made some good friends and the dean asked me to teach and give some master classes. The kids are still going to have to cut their teeth and learn their craft but I can give them a few pointers. Still, I haven’t been to school since I was 16 so it’s going to be a good challenge for myself as well!” Audiences can expect to enjoy a well-crafted and extensive catalogue from Jimmy Barnes, along with his special guests come January 2013. FROM RATS TO RICHES

For the uninitiated, all sorts of things could come to mind when you hear the words ‘Quarry Mountain Dead Rats’. As is often the case, though, the book should never be judged by the cover with the name actually proudly describing five Peninsula locals who love music, love performing together and each have the knack of being able to play their instruments like absolute pros. I had a quick chat with front man and mandolin player Chris Wishman about the new album Bloodhound Killed My Squeeze Box, their upcoming tour and their unusual choice of titles. Hailing from Mt Eliza, Wishman and guitarist/banjo player Daniel Sudholz (aka Sudzy) have been mates since they were 14, meeting guitarist Lachlan Alcorn and bassist Davin McDonald around the traps, growing up playing music. The pair befriended Ben, the now ‘washboard’ player, when he started dating Sudzy’s sister and unofficially the band started performing at weekly jams organized at the Quarry in Mt Eliza, alongside eski’s filled with drinks and small appreciative crowds. According to Wishman, it all started out as a bit of fun. “We started off playing every now and then and at the quarry for free, but once we started to realize that people liked what we did, we started taking it more seriously.” And, I hear you ask, what about the band name? “Well, after that we thought we should make a band name and on that particular day, a mate of ours arrived at the Quarry with a dead rat he’d found on the way. When he got there he embedded it in the ledge of the quarry and every week we would come to the quarry and pay homage to the rat, you know. ‘Cheers to the rat, let’s play some music!’ That’s where the name came from.” Random yes, but without this event, the band would have no name. The meaning behind the name of new album is as straight forward as the band name, and again comes from real life events. The story lies behind the fact that Wishman used to play the piano accordion, or ‘squeeze box’, and the time the instrument met its demise, care of Sudzy’s huge bloodhound. “I was at (Sudzy’s) house one day, my piano accordion was laying on the ground and his dog literally ran full pelt and smashed into it! It was on a concrete floor so the insides were completely all smashed through and completely destroyed.” From then, Wishman had no instrument until he found an old mandolin lying around and picked it up. “The mandolin suited the music a lot better so we stuck with that. It was meant to be. Plus, we got a song out of it.” The band’s sound is a mix of bluegrass, folk and rock ‘n roll, created with the collection of aforementioned instruments and put together by a group of musicians keen on being inventive and not confirming to the current trends of popular music. Added to this is a hard work ethic that saw them put their album of 12 songs together in just 3 days, recording with Nash Chambers, brother of Kasey, at his studio in Foggy Mountain, NSW. The chambers relationship didn’t stop there, with Kasey’s husband and renowned singer/songwriter in his own right, Shane Nicholson, producing the record. The band obviously made an impression, with Kasey and Shane choosing to cover the band’s song Where No One Knows My Name on their latest record Wreck & Ruin. The Quarry Mountain Dead Rats embark on a tour to showcase their album, Bloodhound Killed My Squeeze Box, coming to select east coast venues including The Heritage Tavern on November 25 and Pier Live on December 22, the latter to be supported by Ramshackle Army and the Merri Creek Pickers. Releasing his first solo album Smoking Gun under the Guise of Lady of the Sunshine in 2009, Broken Brights once again showcases Stone’s ability to shift between genres without compromising his signature sound. This sound - the Angus & Julia Stone sound - could be likened to a cup of hot tea on a cold grey day, or in musical terms ‘sunshine folk’. Stone solo album tones down the sunshine, instead utilizing distorted guitar riffs, sullen tones and cowboy blues to deliver a dreamy reflection of youth in a seamless combination of melancholy, nostalgic and cheerful tones.

COME SEE A SOLO STONE Fresh from a string of sold-out performances across the USA, UK and Europe, November will see Angus Stone tour his solo album Broken Brights nationally. Seven years of performing as part of the critically acclaimed, triple platinum, million album selling duo, Angus & Julia Stone, the wild-haired, soft crooner has delivered his second solo album to the open arms – and ears – of fans. Broken Brights had its debut at #1 on iTunes and #2 on the ARIA Album Chart, earning him ARIA nominations for Best Blues and Roots Album and Male Artist of the Year.

Comparing the approach to this album, Angus reveals, “a lot of the songs I’ve done with Julia are like taking a leaf from a journal; little stories you write when you are young and don’t know what to do with. With Broken Brights it’s a little like that, but it’s also a little like jumping into other peoples shoes and telling a story, almost like watching a film.”Interestingly, Stone describes a lot of his music making in terms of films and motion, explaining, “when I jot things down, I immerse myself in it. It’s kind of like when I watch films, I’m very much lost in all the characters, I somehow relate my story to theirs and after the movie finishes I’m either really inspired or drained.” Angus also draws a connection between the way in which the album was created with the musical product itself, explaining, “this record was created in motion, for me in a way, the songs are like motion pictures because we were moving and recording on the road.” Indeed the process of making and recording Broken Brights took Stone to across land and sea, from a rustic dwelling in the Swiss Alps, to a log cabin in the lush

Indian countryside, and along Australia’s rugged coast. Back in his homeland for a spring and summer tour, Stone pauses mid-interview as he is startled by a large goanna’s appearance, which apparently stares and saunters towards him momentarily. His infectious appreciation for the moment is marked by a wondrous pause. At a glance, it might be easy to dismiss Angus Stone as another bearded hippie with a guitar, but considering the complexity of his lyrics, and the vivid imagery conjured by his music, one cannot help but indeed see promise. The trail of folk successes in his wake now seem to be building blocks for his solo work, a chance for him to spread his musical wings beyond the confines of the public’s expectations of the sibling duo. Indeed, with Julia Stone respectively touring her own solo album By the Horns it will be interesting to gauge whether there will be a shift in the sibling’s work together in the future, both having honed their musical style further as solo artists. “If we get back together and make music again I think it will be a whole different picture. I’d like to make a more conceptual album if I was to do something with Julia again.” For now, fans of Angus Stone’s music – or rugged looks – have the chance to check him out on his first solo tour at the Palace Theatre on Thursday, November 22, or at Frankston’s Pier Live on Saturday, November 24. Tickets are $40, available from www.angusstone.com or the venue. MATILDA HEGGIE

Get ready to start off summer with a bang as Reel Big Fish and Mayday Parade come to Melbourne thanks to Soundwave Touring. Reel Big Fish first burst onto the music scene back in the 90’s with hits such as Sell Out, their cover of Aha’s Take On Me, and Where Have You Been becoming popular at first in the ska-punk circles before entering the mainstream with heavy airplay on MTV. The band has just released their seventh studio album Cotton Candy Fury, an album made up purely of original material, and according to lead singer Andrew Barrett, “The album is mostly love songs, but bitter, angry, hateful love songs.” He goes on to say, “Just about everybody knows what it’s like to be in a bad relationship, and these songs could be sung by a 15 year old about his first lovegone-wrong, or by a 55 year old about a bitter divorce after 30 years. They’re bad-relationship songs that everybody can relate to.” Reel Big Fish’s live set promises to be energetic, fun and guaranteed to get everybody dancing with a mix of new songs off their current album as well as their classic hits. On board as support acts are 90s punk band Goldfinger, who have their own catalogue of hits since hitting the pop-punk scene in ’94, and the grammy nominated Zebrahead. Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger and Zebrahead will be performing at The Palace in Melbourne on the December 2, with tickets available through oztix.com.au and Ticketek.

Also due on our shores is Mayday Parade, headlining another tour set to bring some of the world’s best pop punk music to Melbourne. Mayday Parade hail all the way from Tallassee USA, where they have spent the past four years perfecting their unique brand of pop-inflected punk rock. Their music, laiden with pop hooks and infectious energy, is also easy to identify with subject matter we’ve all been through. Their new self-titled album, featuring the single Oh Well, Oh Well, is available now. As supports for the Mayday Parade tour, We Are The Crowd have earnt plenty of praise for their mix of male and female vocals and debut album Best Intentions. Heroes For Hire, who rocked out at Soundwave Festival this year and have been gathering a loyal following in Asia, with successful tours around Thailand, Japan and China, will complete the ‘triple bill’. Mayday Parade, plus the aforementioned guests, play Billboard The Venue in Melbourne on Saturday December 8. The bands will perform an underage afternoon gig, earlier in the afternoon as well to ensure that fans of all ages get their pop punk fix. Tickets available, again, through oztix.com.au and Ticketek. Both tours promise to be huge, but are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the great acts and events planned for Soundwave Touring. The approach comes about as a means of ensuring the Peninsula is a safe, family location for locals and holiday-makers alike to enjoy the New Year period, and has been in place since 2001-2002. As a result, there will be no public entertainment, no public fireworks and bans on alcohol in public places, with new liquor laws applying from December 30 and extra precautions taken over the following days. The Shire will have a highly visible police presence across the Peninsula in the days leading up to and including New Year’s Eve, with incidents of anti-social behaviour not to be tolerated, particularly those associated with the consumption of alcohol. If you can turn that down, you are not a Death Metal fan, my friend. Tickets for either event can be found at www.cornerhotel.com.

The name Geoff Achison is synonymous with the guitar and blues in this country, as well as in many parts of the world; a reputation born from years of hard work and relentless touring. Hailing from rural Malmsbury in South-Eastern Australia, Achison’s apprenticeship began in earnest when as a 20yr old he joined the legendary bluesman Dutch Tilders’ band The Blues Club. Almost nonstop touring around the country with the infamous Tilders’ band over the following 5yrs honed and established Achison’s own unique and masterful guitar skills. In the early 90s, Achison left the band to form his own outfit, The Souldiggers, naming the new venture in reflection of his new musical direction. In his own words, “the idea was to have a name that described the music, and I greatly admired the blues philosophy of tapping into ones soul for honesty and truth.” In 1994, Achison formed his own record label, Jupiter 2, and released his first solo album, Big Machine, to considerable critical acclaim. The following year Achison announced himself as a serious player in the international blues scene by winning the prestigious Albert King Memphis Award, representing the Melbourne Blues Appreciation Society. It was around this time that he also won a highly sought endorsement deal with the iconic Gibson Guitars’ acoustic division. In 2007, The Souldiggers won the Chain Blues Music Award in Australia, and within twelve months Achison was named in the top ten new guitarists in the prestigious Guitar Magazine. Both with The Souldiggers and as a soloist, Geoff Achison has been widely recognised by his peers and critics, winning awards over the years for his writing, performing and his prolific recordings. His unique sound has been described as a blues/funk style, all his own, that can be subtle one moment and highly explosive the next, with soulful, heartfelt singing drawing comparisons to Joe Cocker and Warren Haynes. This, all added to technically brilliant and highly rhythmic guitar playing that has seen him share the stage with such prominent names as Tommy Emmanuel, Phil Manning and legendary US artists Jorma Kaukonen, Delbert McClinton, Hubert Sumlin, Clarence ‘Gatemouth’ Brown, John Mayall, the Allman Brothers and even the great Les Paul. Achison has only just recently returned from yet another successful tour of Germany and the UK and in a treat for Peninsula blues lovers he will be appearing at the Bay Hotel in Mornington on Sunday November 28 (solo) and, in an interesting concept, an afternoon with leading

Right, let’s cut straight to the chase and announce it first. Black Sabbath will be here in May. That’s right, you read right, Black Sabbath! The three Gods of Metal themselves, Geezer Butler, Tony Iomi and Ozzy Osbourne have reunited and will be blasting eardrums out and blowing minds at Rod Laver Arena. Do NOT miss this opportunity, scrounge up your loose change, empty accounts, whatever you must do and order your ticket before it is too late. Price is yet to be announced at the time of writing this, unfortunately, but come on… it’s Black Sabbath! As if the price matters, right? Also, fans of punk will really want to secure their tickets for the SRH Fest Inner City Block Party, which will feature Suicidal Tendacies, Unwritten Law, Jukka, HP and Jarppi and Jarno, as well as Finnish pranksters The Dudesons, who promise “Sillyness and Recklessness to the extreme”. “I’m just heading up around the bend, to see what’s on the other side of the mountain.” So goes the tag from one of my all-time favourite Australian songs. For me, this line deserves to sit alongside “the last train out of Sydney’s almost gone”, “Monday I got Friday on my mind” or even “I’d love to have a beer with Duncan, cos Duncan’s me mate.” To know why I feel this way, you’d have to have heard the song – and I can almost guarantee that you haven’t. That’s because Other Side Of The Mountain wasn’t penned by Don Walker, Neil Finn or any member of the Young Family – rather it is the work of South Australian-born Chris Altmann, former front man of mildly successful Melbourne act The Vandas and current resident of Ontario, Canada. Chris is well known amongst Melbourne musicians, largely thanks to his ability to play almost any musical instrument you could imagine but also care of his easy-going demeanour. In 2010 he released his debut solo record Que Paso, the old-school southern-rock-romp from which Other Side Of The Mountain is lifted. Whilst that record didn’t propel Chris into the mainstream, his song-writing prowess was recognised recently by the Australia Council, who selected him as one of two inaugural winners of their 3 Month Nashville Songwriter Residency. It’s an honour well deserved, and will see Altmann spend March, April and May of next year in Music City,

working 9 to 5 on his craft. In the meantime, however, he has returned to Australian shores for a national tour with respected female singer-songwriters Liz Stringer and Susannah Espie – culminating in the launch of Altmann’s new album Nothing but Nice Things. PEARL readers are well placed to attend the launch, as it’s only a short drive up the road at Oakleigh’s Caravan Music Club, (please tell them you saw this in Pearl) but even though I’m giving this show has my personal recommendation, I’m sure it wont be long before Altmann ventures further south to one of our live music haunts. On the subject of great singer-songwriters, I’ve stumbled across a few in recent months

MUSIC VIC’S POLL BEFORE THE POLLS In the lead up to the October election Music Victoria conducted an online survey of over 1500 candidates across 78 electorates, requesting they illustrate their awareness of issues impacting local musicians asking them to outline the policies and initiatives offered to support local contemporary music. It was one of the more novel ideas in the lead up to an election, with survey topics including the issue of live music venues and awareness of regulatory issues, as well as the question of whether they believe there is adequate funding for music events and community grants. GUITARS… PLUS A RICH HISTORY Sandringham’s Guitars Plus is undoubtedly one of Melbourne’s leading independent guitar stores, this year commemorating 30yrs in business. Founded in November 1982, the shop initially offered PA systems and sound reinforcement, as well as guitars and accessories and tuition. By the early 90s, the shop had expanded into the adjacent store, changed its name to Guitars Plus and was fast gaining a reputation as guitar specialists, choosing to only stock fretted instruments (ie. Guitars, banjos, ukuleles, etc). The store has a massive range of guitars on offer, starting from $69 ‘factory seconds’ - a current specialty, as our skilled team can often make a previously unplayable instrument useable - to high-end vintage and rare instruments. Currently on offer, a Gibson ‘Jimmy Page’ Les Paul, ‘Mark Knopfler’ Martin or the trio of 1960s Gibson ES models as well as several Martin Eric Clapton models, all for sale in store or online. You can buy a tip notch solid top cedar or spruce acoustic guitar, with case, for around $400, like a Cort Earth Grande $379, or the Martinez MS55. These guitars are excellent buying and have all been checked, tuned and set up by the store – with excellent down the track back up service! At the helm is Chris Voce, who has nearly 42 years of retail experience, 40 of those in the guitar business. A musician himself, it’s always been important for Chris to ‘know his stuff’ and so much so that he is rarely, if ever, stumped on a guitar related question. It’s a knowledge that comes from much experience behind the counter, but also dealing with artists’ needs with Chris enjoying credits on many top selling Aussie recordings, including Australian Crawl, British India, Crowded House, Skyhooks, Southern Sons, Joe Camilleri, Trial Kennedy and Jimi “The Human” Hocking. These have generally been earned by giving advice, support and occasionally product to up and coming bands and affirm Chris’ insistence on all of the staff at the shop being well skilled at diagnosing problems. Even importers and wholesalers come in from time to time to get their opinion on vintage gear and the history of some of their guitars, with the team also advising on potential imports. Chris has even helped alter, and in some cases design, specs on many imported guitars. The store is also well renowned for quality guitar repairs and expert teaching, with past tutors like Nick Charles, Matthew Fagan and Neale Farnelle, as well as current teachers Alex Yarosh and Simon Croft. Croft has done several stints overseas and was hand picked by Brian May to play the guitar parts in the English and Japanese productions of the We Will Rock You stage show. He has toured all over Australia and is well skilled in all things rock. Having offered tuition since the start, Guitars Plus continues to have students at all levels - the oldest being around 68 and the youngest 8. In charge of repairs, Rob Mitchell has been fixing fretted instruments since his teenage years and has become one of Melbourne’s most respected guitar repairers. A second workbench was built in the store about 2 years ago, allowing other staff to do quick restrings and simple quick jobs without disturbing Rob. Whilst the team has been busy servicing clients, together with organizing the recent Sandringham Village Fair, watch this space! Make sure to keep checking the Guitars Plus Facebook page and website, not to mention PEARL’s Facebook, for an exciting sale event soon. Guitars Plus is located in Sandringham Village at 5 Melrose St, Sandringham, just off Beach Rd (opposite the Sandringham Hotel). If you’re in the Bayside area, why not drop in? If you can’t make it, the twin delivery vans can offer FREE delivery to Bayside and Peninsula customers. For more info, phone 9597 0423 or visit www.guitarsplus.com.au

KARNIVOOL: NOT JUST A BUNCH OF CLOWNS Karnivool are a rock band from Western Australia who first made their name with their hit album Themata. Since then, they’ve released their third studio album Sound Awake and are currently in the studio working on new material. Veterans of the New Years Eve mega-festival ‘Pyramid Rock’, the band are set to play again this year and I spoke to lead guitarist Drew Goddard on the eve of another overseas tour about Karnivool’s latest adventures. PEARL: You’re off to India tomorrow to tour with Karnivool and this will be the band’s second visit there. What was it like last time you played there? GODDARD: It was amazing. The first time we’d ever been there, we played at this amazing festival with 9,000 people and it was basically our show. Everybody was there to see us and it was the biggest show we’d ever done which was mind blowing. Seeing India for the first time and being in a city like Mumbai almost made my brain explode. PEARL: How many cities in India are you visiting this time? GODDARD: This time we’re going back to Mumbai and also playing in Pune, where we’re playing the NH7 festival as well as our own show. The NH7 festival is like an Aussie BBQ with some other Aussie bands heading over as well to showcase Australian music. The Indian market is opening up in terms of Australian music, arts and cinema. There’re very much tuned into what’s happening over here. PEARL: How do you effectively collaborate together when making music? Do you ever get into arguments over who has the best ideas? GODDARD: When we’re collaborating everyone’s pushing ideas and sometimes you have to exercise diplomacy and fight for middle ground. You have to try and go with your gut when deciding what direction the song should take and keep your ego out of the way to try and get the best song. The best thing to do is when you’re all in the room and you’re writing together, just don’t think about it. There’s no thinking - it’s all doing - and it just comes out. You don’t argue about anything when that happens you just jam. It doesn’t always happen like that, as we’re not always together, but when it does we run with it. PEARL: Which bands growing up, and even recently, have influenced you and your music? GODDARD: I pretty much got into music via Nirvana. They were the band that pretty much flicked the switch in my brain. I played Piano as a kid, but then I heard Nirvana and I thought, “that’s what it’s all about!”

NOVEMBER 15-DECEMBER 12, 2012

PEARL: There is a story that Karnivool got their name by behaving like a bunch of clowns around town. Is this true? GODDARD: We still behave like a bunch of clowns! (laughs). That story is very big on the Internet, but in fact the name has been around for a long time, even before I joined the band in 1998. I was 15 years old and I joined a bunch of guys from school who used to play in the music room at lunchtime, and the name Karnivool had been around for a few years before that. We used to play at parties and do Nirvana and Metallica covers. Originally they asked my brother to join the band, however he couldn’t play bass guitar so I gave it a shot and went from there. I ended up writing a few songs on guitar and the name Karnivool just stuck. We never had any idea that, one day, we’d end up playing in India! PEARL: Karnivool have played at Pyramid Rock Festival a few times, and are playing again this year. What do you get up to in the evening of New Years Eve? Do you stay down in Phillip Island and party on at the festival?

GODDARD: We’ve done it a couple of times now, Pyramid. We’ve stayed around before and then other times we’ve gone back to Melbourne and partied on there. Being New Years Eve there’s always stuff to do elsewhere, but Pyramid’s always fun. The last time we played, actually, a big storm came through when The Beautiful Girls were playing and they just got rained off stage. That was a bummer cause I love that band! So… hopefully that doesn’t happen this time (laughs). Karnivool play the Pyramid Rock Festival this year, running from December 29 until January 1, 2013, amongst the mighty lineup featuring 360, Gossling, Pnau, Xavier Rudd, Dead Letter Circus, Children Collide, Mat McHugh, Pez, Stonefield, Amity Affliction and more! KIMEKAI MMA Kimekai MMA started as a humble training program between martial arts instructors from the Dandenong-Frankston area. 10-time Australian Karate Champion and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Brown Belt Marco Mazzanti and USA MuayThai Champion and Collegiate Wrestler Ed Bavelock would punch, kick and grapple their days away on the mats back in the early ‘90s. This soon morphed into a program of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) that today has 3 full-time centres and boasts Victorian State, Australian and South Pacific Champions, all of which compete internationally. In addition, Kimekai has in its stable the very first female MMA Fighter to compete and win in both Victoria and the Northern Territory – Peninsula local Meg Gallagher. The team behind Kimekai are as experienced as they are fit and able to instruct. At the helm as head coach and owner of the Cranbourne branch is professional MMA Fighter, Nick ‘Banjo’ Patterson, with the Chelsea Heights and Highett locations headed up by Ed and Marco. Consulting Coach Brian Ebersole is also an active UFC Fighter who always spends time on the Kimekai mats when in Melbourne. Through the doors regularly to train are AFL teams, North Melbourne Kangaroos and Melbourne Demos, who take part in combative wrestling and MMA programs, applied especially for AFL with a focus on mental toughness. This is all part of their diverse program combining ‘old-school’ values and modern progressive techniques, as well as fitness and ‘physical preparedness’ strength and conditioning training. There are also specific programs for kids and adults offered, with the Kimekai team’s inclusive approach being that everyone can benefit from Mixed Martial Arts training. MORE THAN JUST SPECIALTY COFFEE

Mount Martha Village may be a blip on the Mornington Peninsula radar for some, but for those avid coffee drinkers it shall be overlooked no more. Within that little hub of generic stores lies the most dedicated coffee business Mount Martha has produced in recent memory, boasting the crème de la crème of caffeine on the market. Via Battisti, the Italian-inspired cafe (easily identified by the bright red umbrellas out the front), was primarily created to produce specialty coffee without the city pretension. Sourcing beans directly from Gerard Barrios of Honduras to create the popular House Blend, Via Battisti also offers various Single Origin blends (changed daily) from Columbia, Guatemala, Costa Rica and Ethiopia. Espresso or latte, the talented and charismatic ‘Battisti Baristas’ strive to impress customers with every cup produced, and are proud to offer alternate brewing methods – such as Pour Overs, Cold Drips and Aeropresses – for those willing coffee enthusiasts. But Via Battisti is more than just speciality coffee. Along with a welcoming atmosphere and eclectic soundtrack flowing through the small establishment, is a tantalising selection of food. Fresh local produce is used to construct the assortment of Paninis, Ciabatta rolls and other Italian influenced items, served with passion and flare from the friendly staff eager to assist in whatever culinary direction you choose. Open seven days a week from 7:30am-5:30pm, Via Battisti will fast become a part of your daily routine. HEIDI BOND

BEER CAN BE HEALTHY

It might come as a surprise to some of you, but apart from tasting fantastic, beer can actually be healthy for you as well. One of the more healthy beers on the market is the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which has a massive punch of Cascade Hops. As a genuine Amber Ale, the increased hops gives it a higher alcohol content at 5.6%, but despite this, the beer also contains polyphenols which have been known to lower cholesterol and fight cancer. The other one that might surprise you is Guinness. Everyone’s favourite drink on St Patrick’s Day only has 126 calories and less than 10 carbs! I’m guessing this is the secret to how the Irish keep in such good shape! This month I’m going to pick a beer from Ballarat that was one of the first on the market around the Peninsula area for gluten free beers. O’Briens Premium Lager is a full tasting gluten-free beer that’s naturally different because of the brewing process and ingredients used. Having won 1st prize at the Chesterfield Beer Festival in the UK for gluten free beers, the O’Briens brewers are a patient lot and let the beer ferment and mature a lot longer than a normal lager process. The whole range of O’Briens beers are preservative free and, while some may shun this beer because it is gluten free, it still matches other lagers for full flavoured taste. For my ranking, I gave it 4 out of 5. Finally, I wanted to dedicate the last part of my column to Victoria Bitter and the smart decision to move it back to 4.9% full flavoured Victoria Bitter. A while back, they decided to save a few million dollars and reduce the alcohol volume of VB back to 4.6% and the customers voted by changing brands. I was amazed to see seasoned drinkers who have been drinking VB for over 30 years switch to different beers over the last 12 months. Thank goodness a real brewer with a passion and understanding of beer has purchased CUB and returned VB to its rightful place at 4.9%. Some of my hardened customers are returning back with a few of the young brigade also asking for the new VB. Brave move by CUB and I really hope the damage hasn’t already been done. Have a great month and get behind the Movember Campaign, raising money to support prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives. Until next time… cheers! MORNINGTON MAIN ST FESTIVAL WRAP UP Sunday October 21 Despite inclement weather, the 2012 Mornington Main Street Festival succeeded once again in bringing the Peninsula together in an homage to all things local music, food and wine. Main Street was abuzz with people of all ages on Sunday October 21, yet it seemed to be a predominately family affair, with a number of seemingly new (and slightly weary) parents leisurely pushing their prams and taking in the ambiance of the day. The selection of wine on offer from the variety of Mornington Peninsula wineries had connoisseurs in giddy wonder, and not only at the price of a small glass. Queues of enthusiasts and people enjoying a sought after Sunday session lined the countless wine stalls, tapping their feet in anticipation of that first sip. There were miscellaneous knick knacks on offer, from ultra-chic Elmo beanies to lovely scented and locally produced bath products – an absolute feast for the eyes and the wallet. Various food-stalls peppered Main Street, seducing festival goers with delicious treats. The scones lathered with jam and cream proved to be the most popular item of the day, with an interesting potato-on-a-stick (with your choice of flavouring) coming a very close second. However, we must not forget the music. A notable stand out in the bevy of performers was the soulful voice of Maddison Wilson. Barefoot and jumping around in front of her keyboard with a Blues Brother’s inspired band supporting, Wilson’s sheer enthusiasm made the rain seem insignificant and performed as if her life depended on it. Other notable highlights were the funky blues of Blackwater Riff at the Arts Alive stage and locals President Roots, setting the scene for headliner Jeff Lang at the Grand Hotel end of the street. An undeniable success, the Mornington Main Street Festival for 2012 was an enjoyable experience for all and an absolute Sunday treat for all the senses. HEIDI BOND

COLLARTS (REVIEW) As part of the iMpakt FreeZa committee, a few of the committee members and I took part in a tour of Collarts College of the Arts, in South Melbourne. Going into ‘Collarts’, I already thought it was going to be good, but I was proved wrong... It was amazing! I

Roberts who took the time to show us new skills and inspire us with a career in the music industry. The opportunity to attend Collarts was through being involved with iMpakt FreeZa. Being a committee member certainly has its perks! MICHAEL FIVET, IMPAKT FREEZA COMMITTEE learned all about the music industry, how I could go down each career path, how to set up a stage with a sound system, using a recording studio and much more. At one stage I had a small chance at singing to test out the mic, but it wasn’t to be. Luckily I still managed to redeem myself on the drums, alongside guitarist Joey Brady and Wes Hart on bass, creating a completely improvised song which we were luckily allowed to have recorded for us. The only negative thing about this experience was the fact that we couldn’t stay longer than we did. This insightful experience was provided by Collarts (College of the Arts), with a big thank you to Jesse

EVERYONE’S ALONE BROKEN SPLENDOUR Tex Perkins & Dark Horses (MAJOR BOX / TWO FISH OUT OF WATER) One of Australia’s most well respected musicians, Tex Perkins is back with his band, The Dark Horses, to deliver their new album Everyone’s Alone. The album is really something special, brandishing the band’s dark, well rounded and mature sound. Perkins truly captivates with the familiarity of his trademark gravelly vocals as well as his lyrical sorcery. The group have collectively developed a poignant sound that is characteristically their own and is most evident on tracks such as Dark Ride and the title track Everyone’s Alone. The album is dominated by brooding, atmospheric slow burners that are sure to enchant fans, new and old, and is a testament to the band’s inescapably raw, organic talent. 4 / 5 JESSICA SCUDAMORE

with Ray McGrotty One thing I find really difficult is choosing a favourite Jimi Hendrix album. For an artist who has literally hundreds of posthumous releases, Hendrix only officially released three studio records before his death in September 1970. While the debut album, Are You Experienced, is jam packed full of classic Hendrix hits such as Hey Joe, Fire, The Wind

ANGEL IN REVERSE

Broken Splendour

Mojo Juju

Ian Bland

(INDEPENDENT / REMEDY)

Jason Lytle

(INDEPENDENT / CVP)

(UNIVERSAL / ABC)

(INDEPENDENT)

Quirky, sweet and unique, Lytle’s ability to mix folk, rock and electronics to create music that is different from anything else being done today (as well as being honest and original) should be commended. His use of different sounds and textures, computerized blips and buzzes crowded together with layered guitars and synth hums are on full display on Dept. of Disappearance. Now, it’s not at all that I don’t like the record – because I do – but the thing is, there is not much that really stands out. Don’t get me wrong, the production value is amazing but, as it is, Dept. Of Disappearance is a straight line with little change of direction and seems to tread the same water throughout each eccentric song title. That said, it’s an album of 3 / 5 MATT RIPPON ‘low-fi comforting dream indie, with a tinge of sadness’, so if that’s your thing then this happily is for you.

Having already recorded alongside friends Paul Kelly, David Bridie and the late Paul Hester, Kutcha Edwards has assembled another array of Australian music royalty to guest star on Blak & Blu. Rebecca Barnard, Chris Wilson and Dan Sultan have each performed on the album, along with guitar mestro Jeff Lang who lent his hand to all the songs, bringing his abstruse collection of worldly instruments into the sessions. Always sharing stories of his life in his songs, the immediate thing that strikes you is the authenticity and heart seeping through the music. Bluesy and sultry, the entire album is instantly believable, relevant and hard to turn off. From the slow blues of Roll With The Rhythm, to the skippy lapsteel of Lil Bit Of Lovin’ to the stripped tremolo and soulful vocal behind Scars, Edwards’ new record is engaging and uplifiting listening.

Mojo Juju’s self-titled debut solo album is a mix of ‘now and then’, as is MJ herself. Her thirst for artistic expression isn’t limited to her performance choices, having engulfed her personal style too. However this ‘mix’ is by no means revolutionary. Many a young artist has tried to emulate the look or abilities of those before them in order to snaffle an impressionable ear, but for MJ, the ‘package’ seems easier to swallow. In terms of the voice, there’s not an original or clichéd word left to describe MJ’s tone. Gritty, classic, raw and sultry all pretty much sum it up. This chick truly has bucket loads of swag. As for the album, if you love Michelle Shocked and early Mary J Blige then Mojo Juju might just be the ‘something new’ you’ve been looking for. Both a caricature and artist, Mojo Juju deserves all the spotlight Australia’s supportive music scene can muster.

Some may know Ian Bland from his music, some from his weekly poetry on 3RRR radio, but whichever way you find him, you’ll discover a seasoned songwriter, with a knack of spinning evocative tales and crafting folk and murder ballads with a simple, poignant layering of instrumentation. Songs like Bella & Charlie tell of starting a new life in rural northern Australia, King Of The Singles Bars is the story and inner monologue of the barfly, My Father’s Ashes talks fondly of a final goodbye to a loved Dad and Next To Fall speaks of getting older and losing touch. Whatever topic, Bland weaves words the old fashioned way, painting such distinct pictures with so few words. Lyrical economy at its finest. In addition, there’s stunning arrangements throughout, including particularly beautiful lap steel from veteran muso, Ed Bates. Subtle, lush and a great yarn.

2.5 / 5 SCOTT GARDNER

4.5/5 MONICA NEWMAN

3/5 TAYLOR MCVEAN

Broken Splendour describe themselves as playing ‘altfolktronica.’ I would have thought folktronica was alternative enough, but it does a pretty good job of telling you what they have in store for their self-titled EP though. The trio do a good job of mixing the old and new, creating big atmospheres with the electronics, but keeping it grounded through the song writing, with some nice story telling. The opening track Little Brown Chairs is the standout, building the energy up with some cool guitar work. Posters has a lot of Paul Kelly in it and works well with the final track and lead single Love Will Wait. And with that, the EP closes out on an uplifting note and we go about our day ironically refreshed by broken splendour.

Cries Mary, Purple Haze and Foxy Lady, the double-vinyl third album, Electric Ladyland, also has some great gems like Gypsy Eyes, Crosstown Traffic, All Along The Watchtower and the 15 minute version of Voodoo Chile. Sandwiched between these two is the album released in late 1967, Axis Bold As Love. Well crafted in all aspects of instrumentation, vocals and lyrics, Axis Bold As Love is another masterpiece and probably the pinnacle of Hendrix’s studio recordings. In addition, it’s the album where he established his trademark ‘wah’ sound.

Experience’ trio provide a tight backing for blues and rock’s most celebrated guitarist. Standout tracks for me include Little Wing, Spanish Castle Magic, Castles Made Of Sand and Bold As Love. I can’t really choose a favourite album, though. My advice? Go out and get yourself experienced - buy all three! The album is trippy and psychedelic, with plenty of studio effects such as echo, reverb and some heavy handed panning. CHARTS

On The Industry Grapevine...

ALL CHARTS ARE CURRENT FOR OF THE WEEK OF 12/11/2012

1. GOOD FOR ME Mobin Master vs Tate Strauss The in thing at the moment is sampling songs from the 80s & 90s. Mobin & Tate have hit it right on; the electro bass lines and synth work well and the vocals everybody will notice straight away. A great club track and will get dance floors jumping. 4 / 5 2. FUNKY Silversix Silversix is a name that has been floating around for a while now, taking the funky sounds of vocal/gospel house and putting a twist on it. Funky is as it says very funky with loads of horns and good driving bass, but the only downside for me is not enough vocals throughout. Nevertheless, a damn catchy track with some good remixes available. 3.5 / 5 3. SOUTHSIDE JAM Wellsaid & Rubber Teeth Relative newcomers Wellsaid & Rubber Teeth have delivered a very bouncy track that you cannot help but groove to, no matter which of the remixes are rocking. The Hey Sam mix & the original are the ones that work best for me. 4 /5 4. NOISE Mobin Master vs Tate Strauss (feat Agent 9ine) A hands in the air club track that will have you chanting along with Agent 9ine’s vocals. “Make some noise, make some M*&%*$ noise!” With loads of mixes in this pack, these are all definite peak time mixes for any DJ. Production work is spot on, loads of punch and energy . 4.5 / 5 5. DON’T STOP THE PARTY Pitbull feat TJR. I hardly ever bag a track or artist, but Pitbull why, why, why do you have to do this everytime? You take a great track and stuff it right up by putting your twisted ways on it. TJR’s Funky Vodka is a very good track in its own right and you’ve come along and done minor work with it and now are reaping the rewards. TJR gets full marks from me, but Pitbull you don’t. 2.5 / 5 DJ Iceman plays all the latest & greatest dance, RnB & party tunes at Playhouse Bar in Mordialloc at MIND KANDY events.

STACEY PIGGOTT BLOWS HER OWN TRUMPET Blow Your Own Trumpet – A Musician’s Guide to Publicity & Airplay is a book for self-managed artists, budding music managers and music industry students, written to dispel a few myths and provide a collection of tools to help promote your own music or that of the bands they are representing, without handing over cash to a third party. It’s a book of ideas, guidelines, philosophies and stories telling the many pathways one can choose to create a media presence in Australia. Written by industry acclaimed publicist Stacey Piggot, from Two Fish Out Of Water, the release has fourteen years industry experience behind it. Two Fish’s small team having been lucky enough to work with some amazing local and international artists, as well as execute PR strategies for major awards events and charity shows, and run campaigns for some of the country’s most loved music festivals. Over the years Piggott has developed an intense passion for original independent Australian music and the people who make it, and the book is packed full of stories and experiences from artists of different genres and at different levels, who highlight what moves they have made to get where they are now. Inside the pages are stories from artists such as Henry Rollins, Vikki Thorn (The Waifs), Dan Sultan, Carlo Santone (Blue King Brown), Dan Williams (Art vs Science), Mia Dyson, Ash Grunwald, Stavros Yiannoukas (Bluejuice), as well as industry folk like Dom Alessio (Triple J), Matty Woo (manager of The Beautiful Girls), Dave Batty (manager of The Jezabels), Nick O’Byrne (AIR) and heaps more. Blow Your Own Trumpet – A Musician’s Guide to Publicity & Airplay is an engaging and awesomely informative read for any artists or bands considering engaging a third party to promote their music. It highlights what to look for, how to find it and what to expect and if you do, and it’s available now! 1974. The UK faces economic crisis and a hung parliament. In a culture hostile to cooperation, it’s a period when votes are won or lost by one, when there are fist fights in the bars and when sick MPs are carried through the lobby to register their vote. Set in the political engine rooms of Westminster, James Graham’s biting and energetic new play This House strips politics down to the practical realities of those behind the scenes who roll up their sleeves, and on occasion bend the rules, to manoeuvre a diverse and conflicting chorus of MPs within the Mother of all Parliaments. MURDERED TO DEATH IN MT. ELIZA

THEATRE REVIEW: BARE WITNESS

In the fine tradition of the whodunit, The Frankston Theatre Company presents Peter Gordon’s Murdered to Death. A delightfully funny, deliciously mysterious spoof, it’s more Pink Panther than Agatha Christie and therein lie the laughs. Set in an English country manor, it follows the sleuthing shenanigans of the aptly named Inspector Pratt who arrives after the first shot is fired. A kooky collection of characters gathered for a good time end up embroiled in more than they bargained for on their weekend get away. Will the murderer get away? Did the butler do it? Find out. It plays at the Mt Eliza Community Centre from Friday, Nov. 16 to Sunday, Dec. 2. Bookings 1300 665 377 ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

Is a picture worth a thousand words or a thousand dollars and at whose expense? Is news imagery real or a manipulation of the truth to meet a deadline? Is it ethical to take pictures in a war zone? What kind of a person would risk life and limb for a picture and why? Mari Lourey’s thought -proving play, Bare Witness, lays bare all of these questions as it bears witness to the life and career of a rookie photographer landing in Sarajevo to join a group of veteran war journalists. Following them around the globe over a 20 - year period, it explores the moral, physical and emotional toll photojournalists face in war zones. Brilliantly directed by Nadja Kostich, the production is inventive and evocative; this is theatre making on the edge. Daniela Farinacci, Adam Mc Convell, Eugenia Fragos, Todd McDonald and Ray Chong Nee deserve equal praise for riveting performances in exceptionally visceral, physically and emotionally demanding roles. Adding deeper dimension to the production, musician Kristin Rule plays and sings into her specially designed cello creating a haunting soundscape that combined with voice over recordings, explosive lighting and surprising special effects is breathtaking theatrical storytelling. Highest praise goes to the Frankston Arts Centre for taking risks in its theatre programming. Performances like this challenge an audience making live theatre an experience beyond entertainment. This La Mama Theatre production is now touring. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

FOOD AND ART TO FEED THE SOUL

POLISHED

ARTS & CULTURE ON THE PENINSULA

Being arts editor of a magazine brings me into the realm of all sorts of creativity. It’s inspiring, humbling and challenging to do justice in words to the vast array of talent I encounter. Every month I find new people, artwork, film, dance, theatre or spoken word to set my mind alight and inspire my heart. This past month I saw theatre that left me breathless, met actors who left me speechless, viewed film that made me weep and heard spoken word that made me question our collective humanity. I was moved and uplifted by the depth and breadth of talented people on our Peninsula who want to share their vision, create and collaborate in a community that cares to connect. It is when we share our ideas and connect creatively with like-minded people or even those who challenge us that we are most alive. The arts are at the heart of our cultural identity not on the fringe. So speak up, listen, question, participate, view and make your mark on our communal cultural landscape. Ardently, Your Arts Editor, ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

LITTLE LADY OF LETTERS

Merricks North sculptor, Gwen Bridges Mulder has won the commission for a new sculpture to grace the streets of Mornington. Her exquisite figurative sculpture entitled ‘Letters’ depicts a young girl in 1860s dress posting some letters, but with a twist both literally and figuratively. The sculpture was created to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Mornington becoming a township. ‘Letters’ will be appropriately situated in front of the Old Post Office Museum at the southwest corner of Main St. and the Esplanade. This little lady will be unveiled soon…stay tuned. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

Attention to detail is second to none. Each cup of exquisite coffee offers bespoke latte artwork on top. Food is hand made and designed to tantalize all the senses. Tea that blossoms when it hits hot water, desserts that melt in your mouth, soups to salivate over and crispy, crunchy textures that make eating an experience beyond taste. Better yet, all this is made with the most delicious and nutritious ingredients available. Aum Shanti is also a shop selling cards, gifts, jewellery, clothing, toys, crystals and tarot cards, as well as books that one can peruse from a comfy couch. Aum Shanti exhibits up and coming local artists offering truly affordable artwork. From now through Christmas, painter, Michelle Cleaver, is on display. Her cheerful canvases feature bright colours, whimsical birds, spiralling trees, young girls, hearts and other joyful subjects. Even with over twenty years experience painting, Cleaver wants her work to be accessible to everyone so you could pick up an original painting for as little as $35. Aum Shanti is wonderfully inviting with soft music, warm staff, delightful food and drinks and a welcoming vibe that keeps customers coming back. A must do when in Frankston. The Actors Shed Professional actors of all levels (beginners welcome)

ACTING CLASSES AUDITIONS Actor, Frank Magree is widely recognized as the injured worker with his arm in a sling from Work Safe. Powerful as the commercial is, Magree’s other professional credentials are mighty impressive. Film credits began with a break out performance as Brett in Romper Stomper followed by a starring role in Redball, and parts in Danny Deckchair and Ned Kelly. He played Marty Mason on Bed of Roses for three years and has played guest roles in at least a dozen Australian television drama series. Magree is a very versatile actor. Like many creative people, he has an eclectic mix of talents and interests. In addition to acting, Magree makes films. Last year his short film, “Go, go, go!” won second place in the Peninsula Short Film Festival. His current passion is filming skating videos for young Peninsula skateboarders. He’s a keen surfer and skater himself. “Long board ballet,” as he calls downhill racing, combines skill, grace, style and speed. Peninsula skaters, Julian Forde and Magree’s son, Luca, both represent the Peninsula in skate jams. At fifteen and twelve, respectively, they already have sponsorship. Meeting Magree and a collection of half a dozen local boys, I got to see first hand what the sport looks like. Hell for leather downhill on steep urban streets performing 360s, slides and other tricks to slow the downhill pace was an awe- inspiring sight. Using his iPhone as a remote, Magree films the boys using a flying drone that loads video onto a USB card. He’s helping them make short promotional videos for their sponsors. A big kid at heart and a natural with kids, it was touching to see this world - class actor sharing his time, enthusiasm and willingness to further youthful ambitions. Encouraged by Magree, both Julian and Luca are also signed up with a Melbourne based talent agency pursuing acting careers. In fact, all three of Magree’s children, Frankie, Stella and Luca show real promise as young actors. Balancing school, skating and acting is a big mix, but Magree’s understated encouragement makes it all seem easy. Both boys found skating by serendipity. Julian was introduced to the sport through a friend. Luca met “Skate Australia” documentary filmmakers on a family holiday in Byron Bay. Inspired and committed, these boys have made remarkable progress in the two years they have been skating cleaning up at skate jams. Luca likes the freedom of skating and doing “stuff that other people think is crazy.” Julian likes “going fast without brakes.” Relating skating and acting, Julian said the butterflies in his stomach before a race were similar to the ones he got before an audition. Luca said skating inspires him to be in skating movies. While Julian is keen to become a graphic designer of skateboards, Luca wants to follow in Dad’s footsteps. Magree Senior noted that acting and skating both centre on risk taking behaviours. “You gotta put yourself out there,” he says. His key piece of advice to young actors is, “Keep fit. Keep learning and taking classes even when not working.” Magree also teaches acting for kids on Saturday mornings from 11 am to 1pm at Steve Bastoni’s The Peninsula Acting School located in Benton’s Square Community Centre in Mornington. www.peninsulactingschool.com.au ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

TO BE OR NOT TO BE REPRESENTED

By Andrea Ebsworth Graffiti vandalism is an ongoing major issue for communities of the Mornington Peninsula and as a result we are investigating a number of innovative solutions in partnership with the Department of Justice, schools, Chambers of Commerce and others to better respond to the issue.

On a recent tour of the laneways projects in the City of Greater Bendigo, I saw no graffiti. Why? Close to council offices and on the edge of the CBD is a discreet car park with walls covered in street art. What started as a Youth Week project continues to be used with permission of council resulting in an agreement that no graffiti turns up elsewhere in the community. Council arts officers also invite local street artists to submit their ideas for changing artworks in the laneways. The community collectively care for the commissioned street art and they do so believing it adds vibrancy to their community.

On November 12, Somerville Secondary College launched the “The Big Backyard” project. Initiated by the school’s ‘student leadership program’ and in partnership with the Shire and the Department of Justice we employed Peninsula artist Tony Sowersby to work with students 7 – 12 to create an exciting entry statement to the school’s wetlands area. Hastings Police attended the school and delivered a ‘Graffiti Education Program’ to all students and the project has been installed by the Baxter Men’s Shed. Through the Shire’s Plan Peninsula youth forums skaters expressed how much they dislike graffiti in their parks, stating that it creates slippery surfaces. In support of the young peoples views the Shire cleaned the skate parks. We are also investigating implementing an ‘Adopt-a-Hotspot” concept in Hastings and Mount Eliza, the aim being to clean walls and invite youth and the community in partnership to ‘adopt’ spaces for public artworks. Further, a ‘poetry bombing’ and paste-up event will be held in Hastings on December 8. If you would like to donate your business wall for the project or have an idea for consideration contact me at arts@mornpen.vic.gov.au. To check out more about what’s happening in arts and culture on the Mornington Peninsula visit the Shire’s Artsblog at www.artsonthepeninsula.wordpress.com

Whether or not to have gallery representation is a question many artists ponder. Go it alone or get help promoting their work? Spend valuable creative energy doing something they do not love at the expense of something they do love or get a gallery to do it for them? In truth, not many artists are brilliant at self – promotion. It’s a completely different process utilizing a different part of the brain. Galleries specialize in promotion. That’s their job. Also, creating is a very solitary process. Having to front up at the gallery to present work and meet the people who want to buy it is a valuable skill for an artist and an opportunity to socialize after a long solitary sojourn working. Gallery representation also gives the artist an opportunity to evolve professionally and

POEM Virtuality In the virtual reality of the virtuous surreal is considered a bore while normal mundane and mendacious slimes in through an unopened door From ivory towers so blind to living a life dank and black while taking the time to be kind is considered a sign to attack In the realm of the righteous respect is reserved for religion with rules With vitality defined as profanity and consigned to be lived by mere fools

creates a trajectory of success to build upon. Charity group art shows and school art shows along with smaller local galleries provide amateur and emerging artists a place to start and are invaluable in the marketplace. Representation in commercial galleries can be considered the next logical step in profile building for an artist. Local, then national, then international representation gives the artist the greatest potential for exposure. A good gallery also lends its reputation to an artist in representing them. This relationship invariably goes both ways. These were the some of the thoughts and ideas shared in a conversation with Sharon Wemyss-Smith, proprietor of Manyung Gallery Group when discussing the upcoming Affordable Art Fair in Singapore. POETRY IS THE BOMB

‘Poetry Bombing: Show Your Voice’ combines a live spoken word event with a paste up art project. Local group, Peninsula Poets, hope to transform the graffiti -ridden walls of Terry White’s Chemist in Hastings into a laneway of literature on Saturday, December 8 from 11 am to 2 pm as part of the “Adopt a Hot Spot’ project. Standing, on a soapbox reciting original poetry, these passionate poets hope to inspire the general public with verse then leave their writing on the wall to linger longer. Stand up, recite, step down, paste up will be the order of proceedings. Using shape, colour and words to ignite the mind and inspire the heart, they aim to replace the daggy tagging dragging down both community appearance and morale with something more creative. Contact Peninsula Poets founder, Andrea Louise Thomas for more information on 0435 120 297 or email: peninsulapoets@ gmail.com. ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

TO HUCK ‘N TO HOLD

Huck n Hold 2012 was the third round of the Krash Industries Australian Motosurf Titles, held at Portsea Back Beach on November 3 and 4. Over 60 competitors from around Australia made the journey to the Mornington Peninsula for the event and were greeted with daunting 3m surf on the Saturday. Sunday produced 1.5m to 2m swell, off shore winds, and a sunny 30 degree day which made for perfect conditions. Close to 2,000 spectators were on hand after lunch on Sunday to witness Australia’s best go head to head in the Pro and Amateur finals. Other categories were involved as well, such as Biggest Air, Sickest Trick and Cherry Popper, which involves competitors going out and doing their first ever flip within 15mins. Some tried within their first minute, which was a highlight for many spectators. The Shed Nine expression session was a highlight, and a welcome break between the comps. The crew put on a tow show, with their best surfers and body boarders getting whipped into and out of the waves at full speed and into some massive aerials. Supporters agreed it was one of the bestrun events they had been a part of and are looking forward to Cup Weekend 2013. One another positive note Bridge Builders, the youth charity that helped coordinate the event with Krash Industries, bought along 40 of their assets. Assets they were, never seen with their hands in their pockets up and down the Portsea Cliffs and along the shore line. They helped with communication, ski transport, catering and numerous other tasks. Bring on next year! PIC & STORY BY NICK BARTON

BODYBOARDING STATE TITLES A HUGE SUCCESS

The 2012 Victorian State Bodyboarding Titles, run and done last month at Rye Ocean Beach, was the largest scale bodyboarding event for amateurs in Australian history. The state’s best riders, keen to demonstrate their wave riding talents, were blessed with 3-5 foot waves and terrific sunshine all day long, with the Peninsula’s best beach break throwing out some wedgy A-Frames as Victorians flocked from far and wide. There was no shortage of massive moments all day, with tight, high and stylish moves impressing judges throughout. The highlight was Heat 9 Round 2 in the Pro Open, when the waves aligned with Shepherd, Van, Page and Fenn being the definition of a stacked heat. The beach erupted numerous times with Matt Van throwing out multiple inverts, lofted el rollo’s and not to mention claiming his cheer squad before entering the largest barrel of the day. But it was Jack Shepherd stealing the show at his home break in the heat of the day, lofting a flawless invert that left the judges in complete agreeance, awarding him perfect 10’s across the board. Despite some massive efforts from Shepherd, Van, Taylor and Clayton, when it came down to things, it was reigning 3-time Open State Champion Adam Morrison’s title to lose. With conditions deteriorating throughout the semis, the final was a scrappier affair. Adam ‘Boggy’ Morrison and Matt Van got to work early, but ‘Boggy’, with the experience and terrific ability to build scores in any conditions, took out the day winning his 4th consecutive Open State Title! A funded event for Victorian residents only, with just on $3,500.00 prize money distributed wholly back to those Victorian entrants, the winner, Morrison, not only secures the crown of State Champion, but seals his position on Team Vic as they head to the Australian National Titles in December, held at Kiama, NSW. Alongside him will be 2nd and 3rd placings, Matt Taylor and Matt Van, to give the rest of Australian Bodyboarding a shake! With terrific support from sponsors, the 2012 Vic State Titles was an awesome weekend down at the back beach for spectators and families alike, with an array of tents and displays provided for all beachgoers. Bring on the National Titles! CHRIS BAGOT

Bali, West Timor, Maldives, Mentawais, Hawaii FAVOURITE SURF SPOT: Secret spot in West Timor PEARL: So Georgia, this year was your first year competing on the Women’s World Surf Tour. What was your final ranking and how was the experience? FISH: Yeah, I ended up 20th on the world ranking this year which, considering some outside factors and the expectations I had, I was pretty happy with. It was an amazing experience and really opened my eyes up to the reality of what it takes to get to the top and be one of the best surfers in the world. PEARL: Tell us where you’ve travelled, so far, in 2012? FISH: This year the competition schedule was pretty high demanding. The first few contests were in spots all over Australia; first Manly, then Newcastle and then West Australia. The first overseas comp was in France, then to Peru, Mexico and Caliifornia which was definitely my favourite trip. I came home for a couple of weeks and then flew to the Maldives for a boat trip, before Spain, then Portugal and then the Azores. PEARL: Tell us one of your favourite travel memories. FISH: Hmmm, probably just every day in Mexico. It was amazing exploring and finding empty, perfect beaches and point breaks everywhere. Surfing in bikinis and coming in to eat the best tacos and nachos you’ll ever taste was so satisfying. And we weren’t competing, so it was the perfect trip in my eyes. PEARL: How old were you when you first started surfing?

Interview by Eddie Wearne FISH: I was around 8-9yrs old. I started on a boogie board, then a nipper board, then a foamy and then a new Balin 6’6 blue fibreglass board. I still remember going into the shop and buying it with Dad and feeling like the raddest 10 year old in Flinders! (laughs) PEARL: Locally, in the colder waters, women are usually out numbered but most of the experienced local surfers are proud to see you doing so well with your surfing and envy your devotion. How was it growing up trying to get waves off the boys? FISH: I remember being pushed out of waves a lot when I was younger at Crunchies or The Point from some old mate on a goat boat or long board, but that’s just surfing and how you learn the pecking order of a line up. All in all I’ve been pretty blessed with the group of people that surrounded me when I was growing up surfing. There are many locals I owe a wave or two to, young and old, who have all pushed me and supported me since I was a total kook. I probably wouldn’t be pursuing my career if it wasn’t for all of them. PEARL: Who are your favourite companions on the world tour? FISH: There is a big group of girls who I tend to hang out with, no matter which country we’re in, and they keep me forever entertained. Phillipa Anderson, Dimity Stoyle and Lori Kelly are my main companions. There is never a dull moment with those chickas! PEARL: What is the wildest thing you have seen a girl do? (In the water /not on the dance-floor!) FISH: Definitely Phillipa Anderson’s air reverses. She takes right after her brother and is getting pretty close to sticking them and she’ll probably scare most guys and girls out of the water once she’s got them down pat. PEARL: Any final words? TREE TO SEA TO BE BELIEVED Have you ever thought about making your own surfboard? Why haven’t you done it? The cost of materials? The time it could take? The use of high tech power tools? If you answered yes to any of those questions prepare for your misconceptions to be put to rest. You can now build your own surfboard in a cost effective and environmentally friendly way thanks to the workshop pioneered by Rich Blundell from America. His philosophy is based on getting back to using wood to make surfboards and not relying on big companies to produce them. The two men utilizing Blundell’s method and cutting out the need for fiberglass, clamps and power tools are Tree To Sea’s Gary Miller and Rob Ivers. Rob says he found a forum online that discussed this method and he got some ideas and decided to run the workshops over here. “We ran them with great success plenty of people wanted to do them, originally I wasn’t 100 per cent sold on the system he was using I thought we could do it better because Blundell’s system still relied on using fiberglass. I wanted to get totally away from fiberglass, so the boards we make 98 percent wood a few percent glue and a marine grade varnish.“ The boards are made from Paulowina timber grown around Coffs Harbour and Rob says it’s great that the environmental footprint isn’t coming from America. According to Gary, the main part of them developing the course was to make it as environmentally friendly as possible and at the same time be able to pitch it to people who haven’t had experience with tools. “We wanted it to get to

ARTS

CULTURE

SURF&SKATE

the stage where people can go to the local hardware shop and not have to spend a lot of money on sophisticated power tools but create a surfboard using timber and hand tools.” The plus side of using wood to make the board is that there are no harmful chemicals needed. Rob says the traditional chemicals used in making traditional foam boards are dangerous and give off smelly fumes. “Using wood means we don’t have to wear masks, at the end of the workshop we literally get a broom and sweep all the wood shavings back into the garden.” Wooden boards may be a little bit heavier when it comes to carrying them down to the water however they give a surfer an advantage in the water. “Wooden boards have a lot more drive and gather a lot more speed, the little bit of extra weight adds to the benefit because when you start paddling

the board gathers more momentum, so if a guy was next to you paddling on a foam board and you both stop at the same time yours would travel further you can utilize that extra weight,” says Rob. With interest from a school in Tasmania as well as some from the Peninsula the pair are now working on putting together kits to send out to those who can build their own board at their own pace, they hope to have the kits complete and ready to be mailed out in early 2013. Tree To Sea Workshops for next year are filling up fast as each one only caters for six to seven people, so to reserve your spot email Info@treetosea.com.au or call Rob 0409 211 751 or Gary 0423 804 975. DEEP IN THE HEART OF FRANKSTON

Tucked away in the heart of Frankston is one of the most eclectic and exciting venues, still relatively unknown. That may be, in part, to the fact that it finds itself around the Young St are, nearby to the sometimes checked past of venues like Oscars and Sopranos and Groovers Lounge, but let us assure you of this; this venue is something unique and different. You simply MUST check out B’Artiste! New owner Carlos Reo-Dero has stepped in already made some bold statements, exciting plans and built upon the diverse catalogue of acts already in place. With a view to creating a hub for arts & music of many genres, Reo-Dero is focused on including quality dedicated showbiz style acts and giving a real ‘performance’ aspect. Even with bands that come through, they try to prop the stage, creating a scene in which the band plays, drawing inspiration from the old blues “juke joints”, amongst others. It’s an atmosphere that spills out into the crowd, with Reo-Dero wanting to to set the mood and allow people to live through the music and experience the whole atmosphere. It’s this vision that has packed the venue’s calendar with art exhibitions, burlesque nights, live funk, soul, blues & reggae music and much more on their new expanded stage. Over summer, you can check out their Latin night, every Friday, the rotation of bands, shows and other acts on Saturdays and B’Artiste’s Sundays which include soloists, flamenco acts and upcoming artist showcases, alongside the aforementioned Philosophy Café and Poetry nights. Those wanting an early week challenge can also come for Latin Dancing, which happens every Tuesday night in conjunction with Marshere School Of Dance, in Langwarrin. In keeping with the authentic Spanish flavour on board, B’Artiste has also welcomed Latin 11-piece band Combo La Revalacion, with their authentic salsa, reggae, cha cha and samba music, as well as resident flamenco act Spanish Fiesta Group once a month, featuring well renowned guitarist Juan Martino. The venue also looks forward to 50s harmony quartet The Nymphs, playing December 22 supported by swing and jazz band The Dingalings. In another twist, the B’Artiste Collective Theatrical Group will introduce the Nymphs with a theatrical performance from the barbershop. Discover B’Artiste for yourself in Rossmith Lane, Frankston. Having fronted the successful rock outfit The Scarecrows over the last three years, Kog has decided to take a step back and return to what he loved most – writing songs at the piano. “I really believe that when it’s done right, there is nothing quite as powerful or as beautiful as the sound of a piano and a voice together,” he says. “I was tempted (on the EP) to add strings, guitars and all the bells and whistles, but I realized that what I was looking for was just to have better recordings of the songs I record onto my iPhone when I’m home alone.” Barricades is the first snapshot into this promising songwriter’s repertoire, with his songs and performance having been described as ‘a Jeff Buckley/Rufus Wainwright lovechild, with a flair for hooks and raw lyrical content.’ Recorded in one day at the legendary Sing Sing Studios and coproduced with Matt Neighbour (Bob Evans), Barricades is sure to make some noise over the summer of 2012-13. Cox has gone on to open up for the likes of Shooter Jennings, Ghostwriter, Jack White, The Jim Rose Circus and more, counting amongst her fans Todd the Surfer, Quentin Tarantino, Gene Autry and Rick Rubin, who apparently dug her stripped down sound from live appearances on college radio stations. She has dedicated her life to touring, playing music and writing songs and its around those things that her life has happily revolved. In her own words, “Some people have cars, some people have houses, hell some folks are married... but that’s all the same to me as long I have my guitar and my songs.” Izzy Cox currently resides in Austin, Texas, but will come out to Australia this month for a series of very special shows. Catch her at Baha Tacos on November 23, and the following night (November 24) at God’s Kitchen in Mornington. Head to www. facebook.com/pages/Izzy-Cox/156116364459 for more info.
