There’s much excitement around INXS at the moment with the announcement in late September that the group has a new lead singer in Ciaran Gribbin and will headline the Red Hot Summer Tour 2012 in regional Australia. Gribbin, who hails from Belfast, will be performing with INXS for the first time in Australia at several shows in January, including Morning Star Estate in Mt Eliza on Sunday, January 22. A Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter, Gribbin has worked with a range of artists, including Madonna and Paul McCartney. It was with Madonna that Gribbin was nominated for his work as a co-writer on Celebration. The 35-year-old said he’s thrilled to be joining a band that has sold more than 35 million records over an extraordinary career spanning three decades. He told Billboard.com he remembered watching the guys on MTV as a kid. “I was just blown away by them,” he recalled. “They definitely played a huge part in my musical education as a songwriter and something I aspired to, so to be in the band now is pretty amazing.” Recently back from performing in South America, band member Tim Farriss said it was great to have Gribbin on board.

In an interview with The Fireballs’ Eddie Fury, Tim explained that fellow band member and brother Andrew Farriss had met Gribbin at a barbecue in Sydney. “They started playing guitar together and one thing led to another,” Tim said. “He was a fan of the band and we all became great mates with him.” Andrew Farriss said the group was “really enjoying being creative and seeing where it leads”. Gribbin confessed that “we almost have too many ideas at the moment” but hoped INXS would have some new songs to offer fans during the upcoming tour. Gribbin said he was “unbelievably excited” about the live shows. “It’s a genuine dream come true. It’s a wonderful, proud moment for me. It’s a real feeling of achievement to have a band of INXS’s stature believe in me as a performer and a singer.” Now they have Gribbin bedded down, INXS are also working on recording some new material. In his interview with Eddie Fury, Tim Farriss spoke about the laidback approach to recording these days. “We have all got home studios,” he said. “I’m setting up a recording studio on my farm.” Tim said the boys all normally got together over a few drinks to try out a few ideas in their respective home studios. “So many records are recorded in people’s living rooms these days,” he said. Asked what music he listened to during his downtime, Tim said, “I’m sort of into everything. I love all forms of music. I listen to anything from classical, jazz, soul, r’n’b,

Welcome to PEARL! And just in time too! So much has been happening in local music this year, but the world outside seems to drown it out. Our newspapers read like Real Estate listings and Facebook has even more ads than they do! So with PEARL . . . we’re gonna forget all the other crap and just focus on the cool stuff! What’s on locally in Music and the Arts, what’s hot in entertainment, and all the funky stuff that happening around our home. It’s the start of a revolution! Bumping into Lisa from Mornington Life Magazine at almost every local event, the hot topic of every conversation had always been the lack of a slick, cutting edge, music and arts publication for Bayside and the Mornington Peninsula. Events were often advertised in inappropriate mediums reflected by poor attendance, and our local artists lacked the publicity they desperately need to gain much needed support from their local fans. There was simply no collective, accurate or regular Gig Guide available that was specific to our local entertainment industry, so unique, so widely spaced, yet nationally renowned for its wealth of talent. The Peninsula has been craving for a publication providing bands, venues, artists and other edgy

businesses the opportunity to advertise and promote ‘outside the letterbox and in your face’, and music fans have been screaming for a news source they could tune in to like a great song! Finally, leading music agent Powerhouse Entertainment and leading local publishers Big Bang Media have put their heads together and Pearl is the result! Reaching a mix of locals and tourists with over 650 outlets from Patto to Portsea, Langwarrin to Red Hill – venues, cafes, music shops, galleries, surf & skate shops, general stores, picked up from custom made distribution boxes and best of all . . . out monthly, so it will always be current. Born from a desire to promote musicians, artists and culture unique to our home, PEARL is produced locally by an amazing team of Peninsula writers, photographers, performers, local identities and social butterflies. We are very proud of our first issue and make special mention to the hard work and pure talent of our Music Editor Simon Imrei and the rest of our family at PEARL. Thank you for your amazing tolerance and endless support helping make our dream become reality. In the music industry they say it’s all about who you know! It’s time to meet PEARL! It remains to be seen whether fans attending the INXS gig at Morning Star Estate will get a glimpse of Tim’s 40th birthday present from his brother Andrew – an electric guitar. Tim was nursing the 1956 Fender when he spoke with Fury. The classic ash body instrument is considered top notch in respect

of quality and is rare and valuable, making it a collector’s item for guitar diehards. The 1956 Fender is one of the most popular solid body electric guitars ever made and Tim was clearly stoked with his brother’s gift. “It was a very generous gift from him and is something I’ll cherish,” he said. READY PLEASE MR MUSIC

As a drummer, throughout in my teens I experimented with different sounds, music and drumming styles. My parents always had a great range of tunes playing and I remember crying my eyes out and threatening to run off on the babysitter when I found out they were heading off to Paul Simon’s Graceland concert. When the time came to pack my bags for university in northern NSW, I sold my drum kit and thought, “This is it, no money and no drum kit. ”Yet the area (Byron Bay) introduced me to many musically connected people and this is where my passion for music and DJing really took off. While studying an Applied Science Degree I filled the weekends with surfing, working and spinning records at friends’ houses that stocked turntables and vinyl.

Five years down the track, I’m now living back on the Mornington Peninsula and excited about what the future holds for the music scene here. I continue to DJ every weekend and have started to play some small yet amazing festivals, such as Cairns Winter Solstice 2010, Strawberry Fields 2010 and 2011 Rainbow Serpent Festival (Pan Electric). The resin that moulds my sets together is depth, soul and groove. My bar/chill-out sets feature soul, funk, reggae, hip-hop, break beat, funk breaks, trip-hop, deep house and house. Events and venues played in Melbourne include Sonic Surrealism (residency) at The Cannery Club and the Galley Room. In Mornington there’s Sonic Expedition (currently every Saturday) at God’s Kitchen. My club and event sets are tech house, deep house, dub techno and minimal house. Event and venues played include Wonk @ Killing Time (supporting Uone); Steve Ward and Continuum; Wonk @ Loop Bar (supporting Oblique Industries); Continuum; Killing Time Fridays (supporting Mic Newman); Complex @ Pure Lounge (QLD, DJ/co-manager supporting Ekkohaus, Lutzenkirchen, Ben Wijay, Jona, Yokoo, Murat Kilic, DJ Schwa, Little Fritter, Alex James, Wongo and Zare). If your passion ranges from down-tempo, soul, jazz, funk and dubbed-out reggae through to minimal/tech deep house or if you have a passion for DJing, drop me a line and let me know what you’re up to. T-DUB T-Dub will be writing monthly for PEARL. If you’d like T-Dub to review your release or you know of something happening in the electronic world, drop him a line at dj@ pearlmag.com.au. My name is Simon Imrei and I’m the Music Editor for PEARL. You may have seen me playing gigs around town in a pub covers/ acoustic capacity, or playing at someone’s birthday, work function or engagement party. Or you may know me from the largely successful Muso Night at Jacks Bar in Mt Eliza which I co-founded, and subsequent showcases at Flanagans Frankston and The Bay/Social in Mornington. The truth is, I’ve always worn a number of different hats in life. I’ve previously taught guitar, worked as a recording studio engineer and session musician, done graphic/web design on the side and co-hosted a weekly community radio show, amongst other things. However this opportunity and challenge with PEARL is perhaps the most exciting, as it combines a number of things I’ve done with my passion for the peninsula music scene. I’ve always loved and had great admiration for music around the peninsula and I still have vivid memories of taking advantage of open mic nights, busking and trying every avenue possible to be involved in the scene. The hope was that someday I could play music for a living. Since I’ve been playing professionally, every step of the way has involved me trying to help people starting out - either by teaching, giving them time onstage at a muso night or just with advice. My role now is the natural extension of all these events. I want PEARL to be an up to date, credible, diverse and exciting publication and one that gives local arts and music a chance to be recognised and embraced. I want to bring together artists and musicians from Frankston, Balnarring, Sorrento and surrounds to give the world a sense of how special things are and how much is really happening around the area. I’m privileged to be involved as Music Editor for PEARL, and implore anyone who has any information about upcoming gigs, releases, news or other events to contact me directly at editor@pearlmag.com.au Look forward to hearing from you, and keeping you up to date with all the latest on the Mornington Peninsula. When I was growing up, people would tell me being a rock star was all about sex, drugs and rock & roll - living the high life fully and to excess. TVs being thrown out of hotel room windows were commonplace, alongside the substance abuse and inevitable foray into spirituality and meditation. Breaking all these stereotypes is ‘star of the moment’, Gotye (aka. Wally DeBacker). Strangely mirroring very little, if any, of these inherent ‘rock star’ traits, he can more accurately be described as a humble, genuine, quirky but highly intelligent artist, focused and in tune with the important things in his life. You’d forgive DeBacker for slipping into the stereotype, with the last 12 months giving him a bonified #1 hit with the breakthrough single Somebody That I Used To Know and the #1 album Making Mirrors. This has made Gotye the first Australian act to simultaneously hold the #1 single and #1 album since Silverchair in 2007. This is in addition to the six ARIA awards he picked up last month - only one short of a clean sweep - and a second Triple J Award for the 2011 Album Of The Year. Sitting down with DeBacker in Mornington’s ‘Via Boffe’ cafe, he’s remarkably understated for a man in the midst of all this chaos and change. He describes the recent events as a subtle adjustment. “I still prefer to lead a low key private life if I can. If anything, maybe I wander around more airports and public places, keeping to myself with my head down,” he says. “I don’t get recognised too much, but when I do it’s nice. People have good energy.” It’s fitting that we’re catching up on the peninsula as it’s where DeBacker has spent most of his time over the last five to seven years. When his parents chose to move down to Merricks, DeBacker began to experience and get to know the area.

“I was never into going down there when I was a teen,” he recalls. “I just preferred to stay home and play video games with mates and ride my bike, but when my parents bought the block I used to come every weekend and hang out, head to Balnarring beach for a swim and play basketball with the ring my Dad put up in the shed. I slowly fell in love with the place and the dynamic. Now I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Plus, it’s near my folks who I have a great relationship with.” The early days of music as Gotye involved the meticulous production of a number of small EPs he would send out to radio stations, all on burnt CDRs with printed labels and hand-made cover artwork. These EPs would later form his first major release Boardface. DeBacker jokes, “my friend Andy likes to say ‘what my success shows is that all you really need is a lot of persistence and a big collection of brown pencils’, as I spent so much money on brown Derwent pencils, colouring in the edges of CD covers.” As a result of those handmade CD’s, Gotye enjoyed increasing success with his second record Like Drawing Blood, winning his first Triple J Award in 2006, as well as his first ARIA award for Best Male Artist at the 2007 ceremony. This was all prior to the amazing and unexpected success of Somebody That I Used To Know, featuring kiwi starlet Kimbra, and the duo’s accompanying music video. Leaked online prior to its release, the clip attracted 50,000 views within its first week, laying the foundation for DeBacker’s recent widespread success. “I really like animation, and I always wanted to have shows that somehow visually represented and gave a visual centre point to my songs. It was certainly a focus on the new record, and being able to commission animations and directors whose work I love is great.” Making Mirrors has seen Gotye’s success continue to grow, and shows DeBacker’s development as an artist and songwriter. Having spent time between albums recording and performing with his other band ‘The Basics’, a rock & roll band he formed with close friend Kris Schroeder in 2002, DeBacker is realistic about the inevitable ‘cross-pollination’ of conventions and influences that are present. The contrast between longer, experimental and sometimes instrumental Gotye material and the more traditional pop structures of Basics material has arguably been diluted in recent times, and when asked about the shorter, more radio friendly, song lengths on Making Mirrors, DeBacker explains, “There were times when I wanted to do things a bit more expansive, or that meandered off in different directions. I don’t know, maybe I’ve just gotten better at being concise. A song like Easy Way Out (track two off Making Mirrors) I really like because of its conciseness. I could’ve gone off in another direction for another four or five minutes after ‘the pop song’, but I think shorter suits the song.” The recent record has also seen many more Gotye shows, both in the mini orchestra format as well as the full band line up with full production and audiovisuals. Each incarnation has attracted huge crowds and critical raves, welcome consolation for DeBacker who when finishing production on Making Mirrors had been rushed to assemble his live persona under the pressure of time and anticipation. “Because it took me so long to make the record, there was an expectation to produce it live. I very quickly had to put together a small band to begin promoting the first single.” The larger outfit took a little bit more time and

INTERVIEW finesse, but still with time restrictions. “It was about was three to four months of tapping friends on the shoulder and sometimes auditioning friends, but for a long time I wasn’t quite sure about instrumentation, and had very little time to decide before jumping straight into rehearsing twice a week.” DeBacker is now a multiple ARIA winner and with that comes both industry anticipation of every move, and personal expectations. Has success changed him for the better or the worse? “I hope when I go to make music now, I won’t have that voice in the back of my head that goes, ‘be as interesting or as explorative as you want, but keep an ear on whether there’s some accessibility, and what ‘the single’ is’. That was drifting around in my head as I was working on material, but in the end the song that has flung the doors open for the album is the last one finished, and the one I didn’t expect to go as crazy as it has. I remember really wanting to finish it because I realised it represented something that would hopefully get other people into things that are a bit more interesting, a bit more peculiar and a bit more ‘me’. Luckily people have embraced it.” Crowds will get another opportunity to see his live show at this year’s Pyramid Rock Festival, when he performs alongside Scissor Sisters, Living End and Boy and Bear. The festival setting can be a difficult platform on which to perform, with unfamiliar tech crews and scheduling, but there is sometimes an opportunity to see some of the good music on offer.

“I always try to go out and see other bands I’m interested in, or wander around to people’s cabins, say g’day and play some table tennis. That aspect of festivals is great, when you get to meet people, hang out and throw a frisbee.” It’s a time of year that most artists would enjoy a deserved break, but not DeBacker. “I’ve had a couple of really nice New Years Eves with friends the last couple of years, but i’m actually looking forward to playing this year. Luckily i’m amongst friends when i’m with my band and crew anyway.” As time runs out on our chat, I ask DeBacker if there’s any peninsula based artists he looks up to or draws inspiration from, which draws a wry grin and reference to his long time girlfriend as “this chicky babe, Tash Parker.” He goes on to say, “I have to mention Marty Williams. He inspires me with his song writing, and his leadership on the peninsula in getting musos together. But there’s so many people that are inspiring in terms of their energy and the different things they’re putting together. I’m privileged to know them all.” As a humble and genuinely down to earth friend to many on the peninsula, the feeling is certainly reciprocal. Pyramid Rock Festival is held in Phillip Island, and runs from December 29th 2011 to January 1st 2012. Gotye will appear on December 30th. Tickets for the 2-day and 3-day passes are still available. Kisschasy lead singer/guitarist Darren Cordeaux has achieved a great deal in a short time. In fact, relative to many young artists and bands around him, he’s done exceedingly well. His band’s history so far includes the production of two EPs, three commercially successful full-length albums (two of which have been certified gold in Australia), a ‘Best Breakthrough Artist Single’ ARIA nomination, accolades from Channel V and MTV, and extensive touring alongside some of Australia’s biggest acts at festivals and sell-out shows around the country. What’s more, it shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. Speaking from his home in Carlton, Cordeaux sounds both refreshed but also eager for what’s to come as the band prepare to enter the studio to record their fourth album. It’s almost 10 years since the band - which includes Peninsula-born Joel Vanderuit, Sean Thomas and Karl Ammitzboll - formed as the result of a throwaway promise to form a casual side project away from their other bands. “My band played a show at the Arthouse with Ten Pin (Vanderuit, Thomas and Ammitzboll), and I remember Joel came up to me after the show, told me he liked my voice and suggested doing a side project,” explains Cordeaux. “We thought our bands were so serious back then that it warranted us doing a side project that wasn’t so serious!” It was a follow-up meeting at the Warped Tour Festival months later that sealed the pact and led to the band writing and releasing two EPs, leading up to their breakthrough debut record United Paper People. The early stages of the band, according to Cordeaux, were all about playing as much as possible as they figured out everyone’s roles in the group and what the band could be. “We all came from such different musical backgrounds; Karl had a style of drumming nobody else had, Shaun with guitar as well. It just naturally evolved that I was the songwriter of the band.” What came from these early stages led to widespread success and the band being cemented as one of Australia’s most important young rock acts, selling more than 90,000 records and becoming household names with such songs as Do-Do’s & Whoa-Oh’s, Opinions Won’t Keep You Warm At Night and Spray On Pants. With more than 500 shows under their belts, the four members have evolved and matured musically, as has Cordeaux’s songwriting. Their third album Seizures reflects a piercingly direct lyricism alongside Cordeaux’s longstanding and unashamed love of pop music and melodies. “I’ve always been attracted to melody, no matter what style. If it’s got a melody that speaks to me, that’s what I gravitate towards and it’s what I’ve always tried to write. I guess in that sense we’re very much a pop band.” This coming Australia Day Eve sees the band return home to the Peninsula for a show at Pier Live in Frankston, a prospect Cordeaux is quite obviously excited about when I mention it. “I never feel more comfortable playing there; it really is coming home to play. The shows are intimate, you feel like you can really be yourself and connect with the audience and it’s always great to feel that support from people who have been around from the start.” Cordeaux slyly lets on there is a possibility of hearing some new tunes at the Pier show. “Inspiration comes from my surroundings, and in that way the Peninsula’s a very big part of a

INTERVIEW lot of my songs. Being our first show of 2012, we may try out some new material at the Pier. It’ll be a great way to kick the year off.” It will also be a chance for the band to keep the rust off after a series of sporadic one-off shows as they prepare for their next record. After collaborating with industry heavyweight producer/engineers like Phillip McKellar (Silverchair), Barrett Jones (Nirvana), Chris Sheldon (The Pixies) and Rob Schnapf (Beck), Cordeaux is relaxed about plans to approach

the next record a little differently, especially with the changing landscape of the music business. “There’s no doubt the industry has evolved. It’s scary, but it’s also exciting. With so many tools these days to do things yourself, we’re really considering a more DIY approach this time.” What about the public’s perception and how to reach the masses these days? “You’ve got to work a little harder to keep your fans happy, there’s no doubt. They have so much available

to them, they can listen to what they want, when they want. What are you gonna do to stick out and be special?” I guess, from Darren’s perspective, being in a good band and writing good pop songs is a great start. Kisschasy play Pier Live on Australia Day Eve, Wednesday, January 25 as part of the Screaming Blue Music Fest. Tickets are $30+bf, available from Ticketmaster or the venue. Doors open at 5pm.

“I’ve always been a daydreamer,” Michael Spiby says, “and that’s how I write songs. Things happen when I daydream - magic things.” Many magical things have happened during Michael Spiby’s musical life. And after fronting one of our most loved bands, The Badloves, Michael is now focusing on his full-time solo career. It hadn’t always been that way. Despite his dad’s advice, Michael actually set out to become a teacher. But his life changed one unforgettable day at Frankston Teachers’ College. “I came out of a psychology lecture and heard a band soundchecking,” he recalls. “I stuck around for the gig and even though only 20 people were there, they were just phenomenal. That gig instantly changed my career path.” The band was Cold Chisel. Years later, Michael found himself in the Top 10 with Jimmy Barnes and The Badloves, and Barnesy’s classic cover of The Weight. It was just one of many highlights for the band, who had a double platinum

debut album, (featuring the singles Lost, I Remember, Memphis and Green Limousine), won three ARIA Awards, toured Australia with Lenny Kravitz, Europe with Barnesy, and had an amazing backstage meeting with one of his idols, Ray Charles. Acclaimed as one of our finest soul singers, and renowned as a beautiful soul in his own right, Michael is still at home here on the Mornington Peninsula, place he holds very close to his heart. With a much anticipated solo album to be released early next year, hometown music fans are in for a magical treat as Michael previews material from his new album and an acoustic collection of his Badloves classics, in two very special performances. Sunday 8th January Michael Spiby performs an intimate solo show as part of The Social’s ‘Sunday Blues Sessions’ on Main St in Mornington from 2pm. Then Micheal returns with Badloves brother Tony Featherstone for a special guest performance at ‘OZ Made’, the Shire’s exciting new Australia Day music event be held before the fireworks in Mornington Park. Oz Made pays tribute to Oz Music. A free event Thursday 26 January from 6pm.

If only we really could look into a crystal ball and see what the future has in store for us. Watching The Fuzzbirds stroll across the car park to our office located at the old Peninsula Lounge, four good looking, slightly mischievous kids, well-spoken and full of smiles, sporting the signature rock star long locks and dressed in black, black, black….and yep you guessed it, black. The group is reminiscent of a younger version of the band Jet, just having made their way down from Dingley Village to do a gig here in their early days when it was one of the area’s leading touring venues. The Fuzzbirds are a group of musically inclined teenagers from the Mornington Peninsula, just waiting to take on the world. With rock star names like Thommy Taranto, Johnny Mercer, Liam Clapp and Jake Flynn, the guys are already well on their way. Their eyes light up when a photographer turns up to do a quick photo shoot. Watching them from the window as they scurry around the adjacent paddocks and old buildings in the back of Moorooduc, they look like any other excited bunch of teens. The group have only been able to record one of 12 original songs penned to date, yet are about to embark on their first festival style gig…. this has left me wondering what stages these fresh faced teens may be playing ten years down the track. Aged between 15-17, the Padua College boys decided to form a band in September 2010. Since then, they haven’t looked back and have embraced the energy involved in writing and playing music together. With Jake on drums, Liam on bass, Johnny on guitar and Thommy belting it out, The Fuzzbirds have really nailed it. Their musical influences are inspired by the likes of The White Stripes, Led Zeppelin and The Beatles.

The managing director of Powerhouse Entertainment, Simon Mills, says, “it has been quite cool listening to a bunch of kids quote Zeppelin. Their dads and their dad’s dads must have been quite the rockers, producing such pint sized purebreds!” The Fuzzbirds have already recorded a single entitled ‘Kentucky Lovin’, which was recorded at Hothouse Studios earlier this year and is available on iTunes. They’ve penned a further 11 songs which they are also keen to record as soon as they scrape the money together. Their performances at the iconic Espy in St Kilda and Hi-Fi in Swanston Street have been to rapturous applause. Locally, The Fuzzbirds headlined the Adrenalin Festival in Frankston in October but their first big local gig is at Between The Bays Music Festival on February 25th at Penbank School in Moorooduc. Mark Seymour and Custard are also on the bill. While we don’t really have the ability to predict the future, and probably for good reason, it’s safe to say The Fuzzbirds will no doubt establish themselves as popular recording artists. Australian contemporary roots act, The Jed Rowe Band, will be touring the east coast in January to celebrate the release of their new double A sided single ‘Waiting By Your Side and Bloodlines’ on iTunes. The release features two new tracks from their forthcoming second album, recorded and produced by multiple ARIA award winner, Jeff Lang, along with four bonus live tracks. Jed Rowe’s debut album ‘Midnight Sun’ (2009, Green/ MGM) received national airplay on Triple J, ABC and community radio. Following up on a strong launch into the music scene, this latest release assures his place as one of the bright new talents on the Australian roots music scene. Jeff Lang, an icon of the genre, confidently assures, “I’ve enjoyed working with Jed on his new record. Jed has tapped into an empathetic style of storytelling that makes for compelling songs, he plays a mean guitar and his band play with a lovely sense of light and shade.” ‘Waiting By Your Side’ is a melodic ballad fueled by a chorus of rich three-part vocal harmonies from Rowe, Lang, and bassist Michael Arvanitkis. Rowe wrote the track for his wife who was ill while pregnant with the couple’s second child. ‘Bloodlines’ is a high-energy piece of muscular bluesy rock, featuring a searing lap slide guitar solo from Rowe and harmony vocals from Jeff Lang. Both tracks have received strong support and airplay from Triple J and community radio across Australia.

January 28th 2012 will see The Jed Rowe Band play at Baha Tacos in Rye at 9pm. For $10 you can catch the band playing their new tracks, whilst enjoying some fine Mexican and Mediterranean food. ‘Waiting By Your Side and Bloodlines’ is available now on iTunes, with the forthcoming album due for release mid 2012.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA & BAYSIDE

GRAEME WEBBER MEMOIRS OF A BABYBOOMER Graeme Webber concedes his is not a household name, and yet most Australian homes contain some of his photographs and graphic art, albeit in storage or filed away near a sound system. After obtaining an RMIT Fellowship in Graphic Design and majoring in photography, Graeme established Returb Studios in 1972, providing corporate, graphic and photo design for clients in the Australian music industry, ALP, Melbourne Theatre Company, Victorian Arts Centre and the Australian Ballet. During this period Graeme shot for such magazines as Go Set, Juke, Ram and Rolling Stone. He has worked on assignment in Los Angeles, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong, and lectured extensively for more than 30 years in such institutions as RMIT and Swinburne. After more than 60 album covers, the odd poster, 8 books and several awards, including a Highest Commendation for Australian Pop Photography, Graeme is writing a few things down. The book title has changed many times because this is, as Graeme says, “an exercise in trying to separate my perception from others who have an entirely different take on a specific timeframe”. Graeme was responsible for the evocative cover of Australian Crawl’s classic 1980 debut The Boys Light Up, which he shot at Ranelagh Beach in Mt Eliza. (Little did he realise that two decades later he would move from Richmond to the Mornington Peninsula.)

James Reyne said of the album, “The girl on the cover was a friend of ours. Because she was a friend we had to turn away when she took her clothes off. We weren’t supposed to look at her like that. “We had to sit in the water in exactly the positions we were in for about three-quarters of an hour until the water was dead still. “I loved the front cover and I still do. We wanted something that said where we’d come from.” As well as working with such musical luminaries as Billy Thorpe, Rene Geyer, Richard Clapton, Skyhooks, Daryl Braithwaite, John Paul Young and John Farnham, Graeme also covered the Sunbury Music Festival in 1973. “I did a deal with Michael Gudinski involving an inner sanctum car pass in return for taking a few reels of photos. I was courting my future wife, Sanno, at the time and had the notion this might help me.” So in the fickle business that is ‘showbiz’, how many contacts from the past does he maintain and value? “I have known Ian McCausland for over 40 years. Macka has never sought fame and yet he is one of the best graphic artists and illustrators in Australia, and a bloody good bloke.” Richard Clapton, who Graeme affectionately calls Mr Gumby, is another who keeps in touch. “I was involved with eight of Richard’s album covers so it was only natural that I got to know him. “The Girls on the Avenue cover features Mr

Local musician Rhys Crimmin will be flown to Germany to compete in the world final of the Emergenza Festival Competition at the Taubertal in Rothenberg next August. Rhys and his band The Toms took out the Australian final of the global competition at Sydney’s Metro Theatre on November 26. The 15-year-old festival was born in Europe from a group of passionate musicians in need of expression. It began with small shows that led to a compilation CD being released showcasing local artists. The next 10 years, however, saw Emergenza grow exponentially, branching into outdoor events and festivals and expanding across Europe, UK, Japan and into Australia. It’s a breath of fresh air and a confidence

Gumby, two female friends and Sanno, my partner at the time, so obviously the Sunbury gig worked! “We had wandered around St Kilda, trying to photograph him with the girls outside some seedy places and almost got beaten up in the process. Because of that physical threat we retreated inside.” Graeme’s last book, published in 1999, featured the artwork of two other designers as well, Ian McCausland and Steve Malpass. Written by Ed Nimmervol, the doyen of Australian music journalists in that era, Under the Covers explores the stories behind the covers in a period that spans the most decisive years of Australian music’s revolution. So is the unnamed book, aka his work in progress, a kiss and tell about sex, drugs and rock’n’roll? “Well, there’s a bit of that,” says Graeme with a mischievous grin. “But the main reason I’m writing it is to capture the feeling and energy of those years – of the ‘70s and the years leading up to the explosion of home-grown music and talent. I hope it becomes a time capsule that preserves the history of the times as told through the eyes of a young pop photographer.” A limited number of Graeme’s books Australian Rock Folio (published in 1976) and Under the Covers are available to purchase – just Google Ian McCausland. booster for a lot of musicians. The audience votes at each stage for their favourite act of the night, and the overall winner gets the opportunity to play a live show in front of industry chiefs and a huge audience. Rhys will perform songs from his debut album Musical Journey and lead-up EP Nightowl, all a mixture of styles from reggae to blues, roots and acoustic. It’s a welcome reward for someone who has toured Australia extensively after taking second place in the Australian Busking Competition in 2003 as a 17-year-old. Rhys quickly developed a strong following after exciting performances at festivals around the country, including Port Fairy, Queenscliff, Apollo Bay, Maldon and the Gold Coast, and support shows with top Australian acts Carus, Ash Grunwald, Bomba

and The Little Stevies. Onstage with him is the myriad of different instruments that make up his live show, including guitars, didgeridoos, harmonicas, kazoo, and several percussion instruments. From the moment Rhys Crimmin starts playing, audiences are drawn to the warm sound he creates, with Rhys letting his music do the talking with undeniable talent. You can catch Rhys Crimmin at God’s Kitchen in Mornington on December 19, January 2 and January 16th. Musical Journey is available online via Rhys’s website and at all shows. QUEENSCLIFF MUSIC FESTIVAL

REVIEWS

Friday 25th – Sunday 27th November by ANDREA EBSWORTH

Friday afternoon, tickets in our hands, the sun was gloriously shining, the car packed, and we were excited for the impending fresh air and salt soaked boat ride to the Queenscliff Music Festival. Not a care about where we would stay, after all I did pack the tent. Although knowing rain was predicted, we hadn’t estimated the extent of it and it washed us back early across the bay to dry and warm safety. Regardless, we did enjoy the opening night for the 15th annual Queenscliff Music Festival. I was up for something inspiring and having invited peninsula musicians Ree Liddell and her Mojo Pearls counterpart Ian Treloar (Holy Cow) to join me it was a wonderful night touring throughout what could only be described as an original musical circus of travelling acts. On offer was an extravaganza of Australia’s most esteemed, experienced, new exploratory, inventive and innovative acts. First on my agenda was a stop to take in the undeniable sounds of Richard Clapton at sunset. This was followed by urban hip hop bands The Beautiful Girls and The Herd who did a sweet arrangement incorporating Oz rock band Red Gum’s 80s hit Only 19 - a fitting addition to their gutsy street words and poetry. I finally heard Pseudo Eco live, bringing much loved memories of 80s TV show ‘Count Down’. A standout and lively performance was made by Queensland band, A French Butler Called Smith, with their engaging gypsy funk and brass circus fusion mixed with a gravelly Tom Waits style voice from acoustic guitarist Scott French. Also of note was the polished performance of WA band Eskimo Joe, making for a great opening night. Every hotel, restaurant, street site, gallery, hall and venue was alive with music, arts and culture. Cafes and bars showcased the best young performers and popular radio show hosts of the moment. There was a ‘Blues and Roots’ train ride to Barwon

DOLLY PARTON

Thursday December 1st (Rod Laver Arena)

by CATHY KNUDSEN On the last night of a six-month world tour Dolly Parton, the self-proclaimed white trash princess, did not disappoint. The little lady rocked the rhinestones at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena with songs like her famous hit Jolene, before giving Led Zeppelin a run for their money with a unique cover of Stairway to Heaven. Whether she’s strumming the guitar, plucking the banjo, tinkling the ivories of her sequin encrusted piano, blowing out a solo on the saxophone or wowing audiences with what is arguably her most powerful instrument - her voice - this woman has talent. While her musical prowess is undeniable, it seems her rarely seen comedic talent is also on par with the best of them. With family anecdotes and one of the most positive outlooks on life it’s easy to see why at 68, the Tennessee native from a family of 12 is still working 9-5 and parading around in a rainbow of sequins. Dolly refuses to be left behind, and to show she can keep up with current trends her performance included a self-depreciating crowd-pleasing rap aimed at her good friend Queen Latifah. Off the stage, she has founded ‘Dolly’s Inspiration Library’, a move to help those without access to education to see a brighter future, in addition to providing 35 million books to children across the USA, Canada and the UK. The messages delivered in her music may well have just as powerful an influence. After almost 50 years in the entertainment industry this is one lady who still has what it takes to make a hit. Whether she’s singing it herself or writing for someone else her message remains the same, that she will always love us and we love her right back.

Heads where you could enjoy a moving landscape along with 10 of the best blues genre musicians. There was a busking competition and a strong showcase from the local Bellarine Peninsula musicians and performers. The well orchestrated program guided you across the Queenscliff township to discover small acoustic sets or songs in the streets, verandas, and laneways. The Queenscliff Forts hosted a visiting music lab, a community based group funded by Barwon Health working to strengthen access for community members to learn and play instruments, sing and perform in a supportive and experimental way. There was a ‘Foot in the Door’ youth music competition and Music Victoria Workshop with some of the biggest names in the music industry discussing what it takes to get ahead in the music industry. All made for a diverse, delightful festival program that loved up to its national reputation. It was exciting to discover a ‘regional’ melding of creative industries, tourism and business all collaborating to support economic development in the arts and cultural sector. Rather a large task and one that the Coordinators of the QMF should feel proud. Finally, I particularly enjoyed finding Salt Contemporary Art Gallery in Hesse Street. A venue hosting an exhibition titled ‘Man Made’, prints and paintings from the ‘Official QMF poster artists’ Nick Morris, Dave Bowers and Doug Bartlett. It was their festival poster that finally inspired me to make it to the 2011 QMF festival and the success of this classic ‘pop art-2011’ branding visually encapsulated the breadth of music genres indeed. For me this was an enjoyable conclusion to discover the exhibition before we packed up our soggy tent and escaped the incessant rain. I’ll certainly be back.

LLOYD SPIEGEL

Sunday 27th Nov, (The Social)

by PATRICK ELLIGET In recognition of the need for more blues on the peninsula’s live music scene, The Social/Bay Hotel made the move earlier this year to introduce a blues session on the last Sunday of every month. The sessions feature prominent local and Melbourne musicians and aim to promote and celebrate this increasingly popular genre of music. 2011 has seen stellar performances by some of Australia’s leading and emerging blues artists including Geoff Achison, the Jarrah Thompson duo, Jimi Hocking and Josh Owen. More recently Lloyd Spiegel, one of Australia’s premier blues guitarists, and percussionist extraordinaire Arun Satgunasingam, treated an enthusiastic crowd to a brilliant afternoon of classic blues and contemporary songs including several selections from Lloyd’s highly acclaimed and award winning album Tangled Brew. His latest work has earned Lloyd widespread critical acclaim and Victoria Blues Awards for Best Solo/Duo, Best Producer and Best Male Artist and led to his well-deserved nomination for Best Male Artist of the Year at the Australian Blues Awards in 2011. To quote the prestigious Australian Guitar Magazine: “Tangled Brew is set to launch from the trenches of continuous touring for no reward to the stratospheric heights of god given, past due recognition. Spiegel has always been known, over a career spanning almost two decades as a guitarist almost without peer but here in the hallowed confines of this record he truly

shows why…Spiegel deconstructs how the blues guitar is supposed to operate, makes sweet love to it, and then kicks it out the back door”. The Social is an ideal environment for this type of musical performance. The venue’s layout lends itself to an intimate, up close experience and nibbles in the form of an extensive all day tapas menu can be enjoyed with beverages including a good selection of interstate and local wines. The icing on the cake is that the monthly Sunday Blues Sessions at The Social has no cover charge which is quite amazing given the quality of the entertainment. The music typically fires up around 3pm and finishes around 6pm and it’s a great way to round out the weekend with friends and family. The Social, which is becoming a very popular venue in Mornington for the over 25’s demographic in particular, is very well named. The monthly Sunday Blues Session at The Social is an exciting development for peninsula blues enthusiasts and musicians alike and no doubt will continue to grow its own tradition and loyal following into 2012. The blues is alive in Mornington. Long live the Sunday session.

IPHONEOGRAPHY

Who would have thought 10 years ago that our mobile phones would have such great quality camera and video capability? The new iPhone 4s, for example, is packed with an eight-megapixel camera and HD video capture usability, and the results are amazing. Truth is, whichever brand of mobile phone you buy these days, you can download great applications - or apps, as they are commonly known – with a varied and widespread array covering all forms of creativity. The apps feature customisable cameras, letting you adjust the camera’s specs, and can give you some pretty unique results. Hipstamatic, Instagram, Retro Camera and Incredibooth are just a few of the most popular and highest selling apps, but there are 2920 photography apps in the Apple app store at present. The real benefit of all of this? Whether you are at the beach, with your kids, at a nightclub or out for an occasion, there is no need to lug a large camera. Your mobile phone can capture the moment at the tap of a screen. Your images needn›t be left to live a life inside your camera memory because you can upload straight to social media sites such as Facebook or Twitter. You can also email directly from your phone, attaching the image to share with friends or family or download to your computer for creative editing. Since the iPhone has such high quality, you can print huge

poster-sized images as well. All of this from a phone camera! iPhoneography is a fast-growing craze throughout the world, with the ease of ability to take discreet images, capture video and sound then readily share it with one click being phenomenal! There is an app called Photo Stitch that allows you to join two images and cleverly edit and crop the image into a panorama. Colour Splash is another high seller that allows you to mix black and white and colour to certain parts of a photo. These actions, which were once thought only accessible after paying a professional, are now available through AppStore for your phone, pad device or even your PC. There is also a craze for actions, which you apply to an image you have taken with a phone or standard camera. The action edits the photo according to what you have selected. You can add a dreamy, retro or high-contrast result, or even lens flare or bokeh. The digital age of photography has had a huge impact on our daily lives. Never before has society snapped so many shots! Alliteration aside, it is just so much fun! Instagram is free photo-sharing application, allowing you to take a photo, apply a filter and share it on your chosen social outlet. You can upload straight to your Twitter, and you

can even upload from your phone to Blurb, a company that creates photo books. Once they’re made, they’re delivered straight to your letterbox! Instagram announced that in August this year, 150 million images were shared. I am a huge fan of Hipstamatic, a camera app that allows you to choose the lens, film and flash combinations. They are all named and give such random results. Being such a fan, I was given the fantastic role of Australian ambassador, running the Facebook page and corresponding with the inventors at Synthetic Corp in San Francisco who allow me to share their wonderful creation and pass on what’s new and fresh to Australian fans. Hipstamatic was the highest selling app in iTunes for 2010, and with upgrades and updates to the camera case every month or so, it is becoming an even more popular app.

Whichever app or camera you download to your mobile, this era of technology will only improve and develop as time goes on. So grab your phone and get snapping today! AMBER GARDENER Amber Gardener is a Hipstamatic ambassador and professional photographer working under the name Naturalight Photography. Find her on Facebook, and for more information on becoming a Hipstamatic ambassador, head to www.hipstamatic.com/ambassador.html

Think you can snap some candid gold? Send us your best iPhone snaps and they may appear in the next issue of Pearl! Email your pic to iSnap@PearlMag.com.au with your full name and where it was taken. STELLARCASTER LOOK BEYOND THE DOOR Local rock outfit Stellarcaster finally launch their debut album Beyond The Door on January 13 after four or five years of developing, performing and honing their craft. Some may argue that’s quite a long time for an album release these days but sometimes, like fine wine, you need time to mature and reach your potential. The band, conceived in 2006 as a songwriting endeavour between Paul Bignell (vocals/guitar) and Dan Ebbels (vocals/lead guitar), soon welcomed

their rhythm section in long-time friend Rohan Gray (drums) and bassist Tom Lawrence. They began to create diverse original music, reflecting each band member’s love of melody and added musicianship, aiming to take their sound to everyone who cared about what makes music important; the shared experience. Paul says writing with Dan has always been easy. “I have tried to work with players before, but no one compares with Dan. Time and time again it works. At first we were surprised, but we seem to get to the song we try to find. There is a trust while we craft the song, but there are moments of elation you can’t buy.” The guiding principle has always been to make the songs “the best they can be”, with the band members’ trust in each other and understanding coming together in the arrangements, structures and/or style. According to their album’s English producer, Bob Spychal, “They work hard to do it correctly, and as a unit their voices sound great together. Whether in unison or track by track, they complement each other, giving Stellarcaster something unseen in music for years.” Paul reciprocates the appreciation. “By 2010, Dan and I had been writing this album for a few years, and now we have the end result it’s very satisfying. The collaboration between Stellarcaster and Bob Spychal was crucial. No one is

looking for a quick fix; it takes time. We never settled for ‘near enough’ though. Bob’s production was meticulous.” Deciding on the album’s artwork was another important step, but with the help of Paul’s daughter and BlueSpore designer Sean, the band achieved their vision. “Sean is a creative designer who, fresh out of university, thrived on the concept. The rainbow with a door in the centre came from a painting my daughter did when she was five. I loved the possible connotations. So innocent and beautiful. Sean was able to take concepts from conversations, expand and deliver. He has talent and persistence.” Stellarcaster’s shows feature songs from the album but they also cover tunes by The Beatles, Santana, The Smiths, Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, The Easybeats and more, forming quite a range of different music at their gigs. “Aside from the covers, there is a diversity in the album tracks, which I think is a strength, because we never set out to make an album with a deliberate sound,” Paul says. “The sounds suit the songs as they developed.” Stellarcaster launch Beyond The Door on Friday, January 13 at Ha’penny Bridge, Wells St, Frankston. For more information, find them on Facebook or at www.reverbnation.com/stellarcaster. WALTER BENELLS

#01 Dealing with The ‘PUB Band’ m When making a request, the easiest and least intrusive way to get the attention of the band is by walking directly on to the stage and getting your whisky-breathed soup cooler next to the singer’s ear. Screaming loudly is the ONLY way to get your point across or your request acknowledged by the band. A playful three-fingered jab to the solar plexus will also show you mean business. m Every musician finds it utterly delightful when the smart ass on the barstool in the corner continues making requests all night that are never appropriate or in good taste. After three hundred song suggestions you may find one the band actually knows. As they start the song and dedicate it to your good self, get up off the stool, grab your smokes and go outside for a cigarette. m So you’re the boss at work, the boss at home, just the boss all round, yeah? Why not take it to a whole new level ... the pub! It feels so good throwing $10 notes at the band and demanding they play ANYTHING you can think up. You look big in front of your mates, the girls love you, and you’re ten foot tall and bullet-proof! That is, until the fed-up acoustic duo (otherwise known as Your Dancing Monkeys), alert the punch-happy bouncers and they throw your carcass out on the street, to the cheers of the crowd.

m You’re out for an end-of-uni party with all your friends, one of whom is “the hot girl that knows she’s hot”, and she decides that 6pm is the ideal time to get into the shooters (to the eye-rolls of all in the bar). This is the perfect time for you and your friends to say goodbye to her because she will be on a different planet by 7pm. By 9pm the band is swinging as hard as she is, and she reckons she wants a “bit of a sing”. She slams her way through tables, chairs and old people all the way to the stage. There she stands with her arms crossed, directing a fierce death stare at every member of the band. Waiting til the song comes to a soft, subtle section, she announces in a hoarse scream that “I can sing this song sooooooo much better!!” This is an incorrect statement and should never be taken seriously. She may be hot, but even hot people lie. JK is one half of the comedy duo JK and Si, and will be writing monthly for PEARL on the lighter side of pub/club behaviour. THE PENINSULA SONGRIDERS CLUB

The Peninsula SongRiders Club was founded in late 2003 and is a weekly musical gathering of people of all ages and abilities who share a passion for creating original sounds and ideas. The club meets each Wednesday, alternating between Balnarring Hall and Baha in Rye. Balnarring Hall is a $5 entry, BYO event starting at 9pm and finishing at midnight. Baha is a licensed venue with free entry and starts at 8.30pm. Marty Nelson-Williams is the driving force behind the club. “Towards the end of 2003 I started something in my home town that would drastically change my whole perspective on writing and performing original music - I was invited to host a muso night at the local pub, The Heritage Tavern,” Marty says. “What has grown out of this has been nothing short of a miracle.” A casual, weekly gathering turned into a torrent. “We outgrew the tavern and relocated to the local milk bar, and found some community roots at the Westernport (Balnarring) Yacht Club. “This was a word-of-mouth phenomenon that was fully embraced by the wonderful local townsfolk and friends from near and far. Within a year it had stretched the old yacht club building to breaking point also. “While we waited for the town hall to be renovated, we became gypsy muso travellers and played in local halls, Point Leo Surf-Lifesaving Club and Balnarring Cricket and Junior Football clubs.” All the while, new ideas and musical-artistic-environmental collaborations were taking place. Bands were forming and everyone was supporting each other, working together for the love of it. Competition had been thrown out the window. “Wow, it’s not just about me and how high I can get, but all about shared conversations - a community awakening,” Marty says. “We now also host events in partnership with Balnarring Primary School and Mornington Peninsula Shire. We were a force at the World Environment Day celebrations in 2009 and at the Mornington Peninsula Music Forum in 2010. “We are now in the process of expanding our artistic reach as a group by joining forces with the Balnarring Village Common.” For more info, contact Marty Nelson-Williams at cousinmarty@gmail.com, find the Peninsula SongRiders Club on Facebook or go to www.bahatacos.com.au

PATRICK ELLIGET Blues has always been something of a tortured soul. Born from the human struggles of slavery, poverty and the agonies of lost love, it is a musical genre that stemmed from the field hollers and chants of slaves in

the Deep South of the United States as a way of helping these unfortunates get through the day. This expression of raw emotion and suffering has become a blues trademark. One of the more interesting observations of what the blues really represents came from the great BB King, who described the blues as “an expression of anger against shame and humiliation”. The blues music movement, which started to gain momentum in the 1940s, literally exploded in the ‘50s and ‘60s to take a more prominent place in popular American/western music culture. Immortal blues trailblazers and journeymen such as Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker and BB King subsequently passed the blues baton to the likes of Eric Clapton, the late Stevie Ray Vaughan, George Thorogood, Robert Cray and the recently departed Gary Moore. While blues as a musical force has for the most part enjoyed a growing profile internationally, it has been something of an

underground movement here in Australia. One of the great pioneers of blues in this country was the late great “Dutch” Tilders, who was at the forefront of the style through the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s and gave his own distinctive blues an Australian twist. Through his relentless live performances over several decades throughout Australia, but particularly Melbourne and the Peninsula, Dutch arguably did more to raise the profile and popularity of blues in this country than anyone else. From his long association with the famous Blues Club at Prahran’s Station Hotel at its peak in the late ‘80s-early ‘90s, he was to spawn and inspire the next wave of blues musicians to continue the traditions and development of blues music in Australia. Many prominent contemporary Australian blues musicians, including Phil Manning, Chris Finnen, Geoff Achison, Lloyd Spiegel, Jimi Hocking and Fiona Boyes, credit Dutch as a major reason for their attraction to the blues. Legend has it that Lloyd Spiegel sat on a milk crate near

the stage as a mesmerised 10-year-old around 1990 and watched Dutch in his prime and a very young Geoff Achison playing the blues at the Station Hotel, which was something of a blues mecca during that time. More than 20 years later, Spiegel and Achison are widely recognised as two of this country’s leading blues artists, largely as a result of the Tilders legacy. As a long-time blues lover who lives locally, I am excited by the opportunity to help raise the profile of the blues on the Mornington Peninsula here at Pearl and look forward to promoting Peninsula blues venues, upcoming events and local blues artists in the coming months. Until next month, just remember that blues rules, and to quote the undisputed grandfather of Australian blues, the late great Dutch Tilders, “Keep the faith!” Patrick will be writing monthly for PEARL on everything blues and jazz. If you’d like Pat to review your release or you know of something happening in the blues or jazz world, drop him a line at blues@pearlmag.com.au.

Holycow’s past 6 weeks has been a swirl of tours. They have been taking their Peninsula/global, funky-roots sound up as far as the Tablelands of Far North Queensland. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s fundraiser was held at the St. Kilda Espy this November. It showcased Holycow’s new album: Don’t get the picture. This was a conservation fest with local Melbourne musos shaking the foundations of The Gershwin Room. Renowned guest Captain Paul Watson was there to host The Shepherd’s largest ever Melbourne event. The band is just back from the Tablelands Folk Festival. They flew up to Cairns, putting out tunes for music lovers alongside Baron’s of Tang, Kamerunga and other national artists from as far afield as Perth. Holycow band also played for SurfAid International staged at Peninsula Boardriders in Gunnamatta. Here they celebrated the remarkable Doctor Dave who has made a big difference to various Indonesian communities around the Mentawai Islands. Locally, Holycow band has been weaving their tunes at the ‘Live @ Balnarring Festival’ and the awesome Balnarring Heritage Tavern among others. The Heritage Tavern is quickly becoming infamous for its support of Peninsula original music. Every Sunday it’s on for young and the not-so-young; a ripper space to soak up the Peninsula vibe with song and wine, out on the deck overlooking the vast garden. Holycow is happily mixing it up with local musos in various showcasings, looking towards the festive season and the gig line-up when the flow of Melburnians shimmy in to take in a piece of the Peninsula lifestyle. Keep your eyes and ears peeled.

NYE with WIZARD & OZ The whole world loves eccentricity and the word is that Andrew Hickinbotham is slightly eccentric. Who else could create such a delightful blend of winery, brewery and musical guru land and meld it into a fascinating, romantic, rural atmosphere? Andrew and his wife, Terryn, trained at Latrobe Uni’s School of Biological Science and are part of a third-generation winemaking clique. However, they turn their hand to any beverage, from fashionable sav blancs and chardonnays to cleverly developed niche blends such as the CSIRO taminga grape. If your preference is for a non-alcoholic tipple there are some gorgeously fruity styles such as strawberry kiss, cabernet grape juice and strawberry elixir. “I think our big secret was music - good wine and upfront, ‘tear out your heartstrings’ music,” says Andrew. “Not just the background stuff you hear all over the place but the sort of music people travel to hear. And that’s rare. “Probably our best loved group are the Wizard and Oz. People come for miles to listen to this quirky duo. Their repertoire is incredible. “In fact, we are having a special New Year’s Eve party to release their new album. It will be a great fun night with backing from a virtuoso sax, horn and trombone section.” The show is $38; food is extra. Bookings are essential on 5981 0355. Saturdays and Sundays at Hickinbotham always features live music and hearty country food. The vegetables are home-grown and the fish and crays are flown in fresh from Flinders Island. Andrew can also be caught making the bread. Then there are the special nights where you rock up for a meal followed by the best music in town. Then afterwards romantically woo your sweetheart in front of that rustic open log fire. Join Andrew and Terryn for a cleansing beer or a crisp sauvignon blanc as they muse on that gorgeous terrace and survey their kingdom overlooking the sea. With an almost 40-year presence in the music scene, Rob Pappalardo has much to offer as a guitarist. Indeed, in recent years he seems to have truly found his calling performing blues and jazz on the Peninsula. Rob’s career kicked off at the age of 16, studying and playing in a jazz ensemble with Bruce Clark, a founder member of the College of the Arts. In 1981, Rob began his studies at the Music Institute of Technology in the US, under the guidance of such acclaimed guitarists such as Pat Martino, Howard Roberts, and Don Mock. Lamenting the difficulty in acquiring a Green Card for working in the US, Rob was “taken under the wing of the late, great Tommy Tedesco”, whose status as one of the busiest studio musicians in Los Angeles at the time facilitated Rob’s access to numerous studio sessions. Lessons from Robin Ford and a meeting with Steve Vai at his home in Hollywood reinforced Rob’s belief that LA was truly the place to be for a guitarist. “You could walk down Hollywood Blvd and Ray Brown, the great bass player, would be walking right past,” Rob said. “I used to live across the road from Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. I was going to school one

Sunday, December 18 sees two of Melbourne’s best come together for a special one-off end-of-year gig at Daveys in Frankston. Hank’s Jalopy Demons and The Detonators promise an afternoon of rockabilly, rock’n’roll, blues and anything in between from 3-6pm. And, best of all, it’s free. The bands’ frontmen - the yelping, gyrating Hank Ferguson from Hank’s Jalopy Demons and the deadpan wisecracking numbskull Rockbottom James from The Detonators - both deliver the goods and their years of experience gigging on the road with their crack bands always shines through. Both bands feature slapping double bass, slap back electric guitar and retro drum beats, all combined to make you get up and dance or just get up and grab another beer. Either way, your feet will be moving. They also both have the ability to fill the venue on their own, so make sure you get there early to secure a pew for a Sunday sermon that won’t happen again. Hank’s Jalopy Demons and The Detonators appear at Daveys Hotel, 510 Nepean Highway, Frankston on Sunday, December 18 from 3-6pm. Free entry.

morning with some mates, and this big Cadillac pulls up with great horns on the front, and a bloke sticks his head out of the top of the car and, seeing us all carrying guitars, he yells, ‘It’s all business!’. I was pretty naïve at the time as to who he was, until a friend turns to me and says, ‘That was Neil Young’.” Returning to the Mornington Peninsula, Rob established a small office in Frankston from which he could work and store equipment. However, demand for him to teach saw the studio evolve into Blue Note College of Music, which still operates today. In 2000, after years of playing the corporate entertainment sector, Rob finally decided he wanted to focus exclusively on blues and jazz, prompting him to form the band Blues Head. “All I ever really wanted to play and promote myself in was my blues and jazz band, because it was the music I loved. It’s the music I do love. All the musicians I respected in my life did their own thing.” Indeed, when asked for his opinion on the music being produced today, Rob praises young Australian independent artists for “pursuing what their heart desires, ignoring large record labels, doing their own thing, and doing it really well”. For Rob, who grew up in a music climate where “the scene was to be in a top 40 band”, playing the Mornington Peninsula is ideal. He describes the Peninsula as “a real hub for real talented people”, where the wineries, festivals and bars provide ample opportunity for artists and music enthusiasts alike. Playing mostly solo acoustic or alongside John Barmoss on the double bass, Rob describes himself as “an old regular” at many venues on the Peninsula, such as Trims, B’artiste, Lazy Joes and Box Stallion Winery. You can check out Rob Pappalardo and his band Blues Head at B’artiste Lounge Bar and Café on Friday, December 16, or head to his website www.robpapp.com for a complete list of upcoming gigs. MATILDA HEGGIE A boy of about 12 cruises down the street, weaving smoothly. He avoids a slow pedestrian, who doesn’t even hear him coming, and continues on down the path. He does so on a bright yellow board with florescent green wheels. The boy pulls up to a group of youths who also carry a variety of candy coloured plastic boards, some casually hanging out of schoolbags, others ducking and weaving between the group. Sound familiar? It’s a trend that’s quickly spreading around the peninsula. Emerging in the mid-1970’s, Penny Skateboards is a homegrown company that has shot to popularity in recent years. The boards consist of a deck merely 22 inches long and 6 inches wide, and come in a range of 14 eye-catching colour combinations. The plastic injection-molded skateboards allow for flexible turning, and size and weight make for an easy fit into any backpack. However, these functions are not necessarily the key factors in the board’s popularity. Caught in the awkward age between playgrounds and pubs, tweens and teens have a lack of options when it comes to entertainment. Perhaps it’s a backlash from the steady bombardment of technology, but it seems that skate, surf and the lifestyle that these past times encompass is resurfacing in youth culture in a massive way.

Indeed, the Mornington Peninsula is the ideal setting for the culture to be revived, with an abundance of sweeping streets and sandy beaches to foster the lifestyle. Identifying the revival and importance of skate culture, independent retailer Hunter and Minx in Mount Eliza stocks original Penny and Z.Flex boards alongside men’s and women’s clothing. “There’s a huge amount of nostalgia surrounding the boards and that whole ‘retro’ life, so many guys come into the shop and share stories of skating and surfing when they were young,” says owner Mark Heggie. Without doubt, the culture of boarding acts as a point of connection between generations that is difficult to find in many other aspects of youth interest. “It’s great to see the best parts of culture come back around and manifest in new ways and we aim to encapsulate the peninsula lifestyle through a combination of top clothing labels, artwork, family memorabilia, Dutch Lekker bicycles and of course, skateboards,” says Mark. Hunter and Minx is located at 44 Ranelagh Drive, Mt Eliza. Check them out on Facebook.

MORNINGTON PENINSULA & BAYSIDE

SHEDNINE’S EDDIE WEARNE - Interview by COPELAND Shed Nine has long been associated with the production of extreme sports films. What are some of them? My favourites were The Return, Australia’s highest-selling freestyle motocross film; State Of Mind, a bodyboard film; and The Meantime, a skate film. When did you start surfing? I started riding waves when I was 12. What activities are you involved with? I grew up skateboarding. I still enjoy it but I’m a lot more careful these days because at my age (34) the injuries don’t heal so quickly. I used to compete as a professional bodyboarder but these days I ride surfboards more and some times maibus and sups. I love snowboarding in the winter, and I’m a closet musician/songwriter. Has growing up on the MP allowed you to enjoy more of these activities? It’s got everything: great people, it’s a good place for kids to grow up, the surf is consistent, there are skate parks everywhere, a solid moto scene, the snow is accessible and the culture of the city is close. It’s definitely one of the best places in the world. How can a teenager get involved in these sports? I’m a member of the Peninsula Board Riders Club and the newly formed Mornington Peninsula Bodyboarders Club. I would definitely recommend those clubs, both have good solid family-based networks who look after the up and comers. We offer surf and bodyboard lessons through our store and a snow bus that takes crews to Mt Buller snowboarding through the winter. There are a couple of local surf schools who do a good job. Motocross crews could hit up their local club. Skaters head to the skate parks. Why do you choose to surf both a surfboard and a bodyboard? Bodyboarding is a great way to learn and become familiar with the ocean. You can ride wilder, crazier waves on a bodyboard than a surfboard without the use of a jet ski. These days, unless the waves are A-grade, I prefer riding a surfboard. It’s more of a workout and definitely kinder to my body. I’m far from the best short board surfer but my focus for is on versatililty, and keeping stoked by surfing with various styles and stances on the different craft. In ways riding heavy waves compares to living life, some times you get nailed by a solid set and get smashed so hard and your right out of your comfort zone deep underwater. A comparison is when life throws challenges, you have to keep on keeping on you know. Sometimes its not easy but you have to cop the beatings and keep on paddling to enjoy riding the waves. Where are some of the best places to surf on the Mornington Peninsula? I prefer the beach breaks between Gunnamatta and Portsea. Where are some of the best places you have surfed around Australia and overseas and how do they compare with home? The heaviest conditions I have experienced in Australia were monster slabs at Luna Park, down the southwest coast of Victoria, and at Shipsterns Bluff in Tasmania. Overseas my favourite places were the North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii, which was incredible but also incredibly crowded, and also all over Indonesia. Remote Indo is my favourite for sure, not only because the waves are perfect but also because the culture fascinates me. The waves at home don’t really compare to those places but what we do have is consistent swell. It’s very rare that the surf is completely flat, and that’s great. It means you can go surfing almost any time if you really want to. How long has the Shed Nine shop at Rye back beach been open? We have been open for five years now. It’s been a constant challenge. Retail is not easy in these times and our shop is a little isolated, tucked away on the border of Rye and St Andrews near the Ocean back beach, so we definitely appreciate every customer we get. It’s definitely a lifestyle choice. Surfing comes first. How do you support the new breed of up-and-coming talent? We sponsor and promote a variety of riders across the core sports and encourage companies to co-sponsor these talented individuals. We are constantly looking to encourage youth to not only participate in the sports but to push their abilities beyond their limits.

When do you get time out of the shop to enjoy the sports? I’m lucky that even though I work seven days a week I can surf before work most mornings. It sounds like you have definitely based your business around the lifestyle. How do you see this evolving as you grow older? I would like to keep surfing as much as possible and try and keep fit. I have a lot of respect for some of the older local guys like Mick Pierce, who built the same shop I am in and ran it for 20 years. In his 60s, he still surfs so well. Phil and Paul Trigger and Lee Manners are in their 60s and still get up at dawn and paddle out before work. Peter Hill still snowboards and surfs in his 60s. He chases snow through Third World countries, dodging avalanches and comes back with wild stories and a massive grin. To me, that’s living. Other guys like Josh Morgan, who rides lots of different boards and surfs solid waves, are definitely role models. Those guys all have kids and most of them surf. When I have kids I’d like to teach them to surf. I get stoked when I see parents surfing with their kids. That’s pretty special. What keeps you motivated and inspired? Definitely all the crew who ride boards, and my local mates. There are a lot of talented people on the Peninsula. Watching friends like Cam Sinclair and Blake Williams take on the world in freestyle motocross and dominate on a global level. That’s impressive. Paddling out in massive waves and watching good mate Marti Paradisis fearlessly attack twenty foot ship sterns death slabs like a kid attacks fairy floss. That was life changing. People like Garry Taylor winning the local board riders 10 years running. That’s commitment. My cousin Martin Kirby left school in Mornington in year 10 then started a hardcore band (Carpathian), topped the charts and has seen more of the world touring in his band than most people could ever dream of. Underground extreme sports talent, musicians and artists keep me inspired. People keep me inspired... The next generation keep me inspired.

LOCAL BROO, NOW AROUND THE COUNTRY

The sign reads “Welcome to Broo Country”, and will soon be seen all over Australia. It is a sign of which local beer baron Kent Grogan is very proud – his dream of bringing his Broo Premium Lager to Australia is now a reality. From humble beginnings and deliveries made by Kent himself using a borrowed van, Broo is now distributed around the country in quantities that two years ago were only a dream. The iconic kangaroo road sign and gold cartons are making a bold statement in bottleshops around Australia. “The Australian public and beer drinkers alike have got right behind us… I think Broo have the most loyal and passionate supporters of any beer in the country,” says Kent. Australia Day 2011 saw Broo embark on one of the most ambitious awareness campaigns ever seen in this country. Kent gave away 10 shares in his company with every carton of Broo purchased over the month. The result was staggering, and now thousands of Australians own legitimate shares in Broo. Another bold move was made when Broo wrote into the company constitution that it could never be sold to overseas interests. It’s a topic that Kent is passionate about, so much so that Broo is now guaranteed to stay 100% Australian owned forever. Broo’s stance is timely, with the planned Fosters Group take over by UK giant SAB Miller and popular Lion Nathan brands such as Tooheys and Boags already in Japanese hands. These takeovers mean that over 90% of Australian beer brands are overseas owned and controlled. “We have plans to list on the stock exchange in order to realise our future expansion plans, but we won’t be selling out. We’ll be an Australian owned company that Australians can be proud of.” Plans to expand the product range as well as the construction of a state of the art brewery are all part of Broo’s future. Of course Broo doesn’t stop at the coastline, with plans to export this liquid gold in the near future. Public support and the evolution of the Broo Croo (Broo drinkers and supporters) has fuelled Kent’s desire to involve all beer drinkers in building Broo into Australia’s next big beer. “Involving our Broo supporters is incredibly important, they are our voice all across the country whether it be getting bars and liquor outlets that don’t stock Broo to get onboard or spreading the word at the next barbie or party,” says Kent. Believe it or not there’s a Roller Derby team based on the peninsula. Like most people I wasn’t sure what it was, so I asked Ezme Hurchu (Erin Campbell) one of the founding members of the Rosebud Rebels how it all worked. She told me the story of Roller Derby and its recent revival. Roller Derby originally started in Chicago, USA, in the 1930’s and through to the 1950’s was a legitimate popular competitive sport. As things progressed, a more theatrical aspect began to dominate the game including predetermined outcomes with a ‘spectacle over sport’ philosophy similar to that found in pro wrestling. This eventually led to the sport’s demise in the 1970’s. Some older folk will recall watching bouts on TV here in Australia. That was until 2001 when the Texas Roller girls restarted the revolution. Since then, Roller Derby has returned to its roots, reincarnated as an athletic, action packed sport, demanding an intense level of commitment to skill, fitness and strategy. No more fake outcomes, it’s the real deal. The Roller Derby bug hit Australia not long after and teams sprung up in Melbourne and most other capital cities. Eventually Ezme and Cat Fatale, after seeing a bout at the Victorian Roller Derby League in Melbourne, decided it was time to learn to skate on eight wheels and start recruiting team members as part of the Rosebud Rebels. Women of all ages and from all walks of life joined up and apart from becoming fitter and making great friends, they are learning all the Roller Derby techniques such as fast skating, jumping and ”booty blocks”. Roller Derby competitors have great names and some even have their own fan clubs.

THE HEAVY SIDE OF THE MOON

Apart from Ezme Hurchu and Cat Fatale, other Rosebud Rebels have cool names such as Sirius Mischief, Al B. Sore, Disco Beaver and Eden Mydust. So far there are over 20 on the team. One of them could even be the lady next door! If you want to hit the tarmac, get fit and meet a great crew, the next fresh meat (new members) intake is in late January. Don’t worry if you can’t skate you’ll be taught how in a fun easy going environment. Most of the Rosebud Rebels have had little or no skate experience. Roller Derby is all about having fun, getting fit, meeting people and competing. Training is three nights a week at Rye Primary School. On February 5th, there’ll be a fund raiser and an opportunity to meet the Rebels and celebrate local music at the peninsula’s favourite taco joint, Baha’s in Rye.

The Rosebud Rebels have their first bout in early 2012. Over the coming months, the team will be looking to recruit not only new skaters, sorry fellow’s women only, but referees who can be men or women, non skating officials and sponsors. Anyone interested is welcome to contact the Rosebud Rebels by email at rosebudrebels@ rocketmail.com or through their Facebook page, where you can get a copy of their very own fund raising cookbook, ‘Meal on Wheels’, due for release mid December. Just in time for Christmas.

DOGHOUSE DAVE

Metal/hard rock is a broad label at best. Sometimes described as “loud and harshsounding rock music with a strong beat”, “lyrically involving violent or fantastic imagery” and often criticised as “rock too hard to be rock’n’roll”, it lies in a realm that, although popular, is largely ambiguous. But who needs to think about things too much? I’m Ben Lopez, and I’ll be your friendly neighbourhood harbinger of all that makes heads rock and drives mortals to throw the horns gesture skyward, usually while shouting such exaltations as “WOOOOO!” This includes anything from Iron Maiden, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath to the punchy, thrashy tones of Megadeth and Metallica; from the epic prog metal of Dream Theater to the aggressive throes of Slayer; all the way to the abyss of black metal bands like Dimmu Borgir and everything in between. However, my main focus is on our own glorious boys, girls, men and women defending the faith and representing the genre right here on the Mornington Peninsula. That being said, if any of the greater Metal Gods grace us with their presence anywhere nearby, you’d better believe I’d tell you all about it. For instance, I’ll be sharing the joys of Soundwave with you all for sure! So sit back in your favourite throne, fill your skull-shaped cup, put on the tunes and read away. Don’t have any of the above? Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered! BEN LOPEZ Ben will be writing monthly for PEARL on everything metal, hard rock, punk and hardcore. If you’d like Ben to review your release or you know of something happening in the ‘heavy’ world, drop him a line at rock@pearlmag.com.au.

Q&A WITH DAVID EDTMAIER Audio engineer and music producer @ Miscreant Recordings

David has been involved in music and audio engineering for 15 years and operates a local recording studio providing a high-quality music production facility for musicians. Services include multi-track recording, mixing and mastering. You can find out more about his services at www.miscreantrecordings.com Q: I’m in a local rock band who have been together for six months and are about to record our first single. Our budget is very low but we need something good enough to get on commercial radio. Our guitarist did SAE (a private institution offering recording courses in South Melbourne) and has a home studio. We’re wondering what approach we should take to getting the best result out of what we have? Any help would be much appreciated. A: This is a dilemma many musicians face. You need a quality recording to best represent yourself and compete with the big production stuff, but like many of us you don’t have the funds to spend thousands at a studio with a big-name engineer or

The peninsula’s newest rehearsal room for band, duos and theatre groups, The Prac Shack, is now open for business in Rye. The room is spacious by usual room standards and features a great in house PA System, microphones stands and leads . . . all in a very clean comfortable environment. There is a lounge area with TV and tea and coffee facilities, and parking right at the front door. The room is operated by Mario Riccioni and Rick Bruce who also run The Guitar Shack next door. They found that many muso’s that came into the Guitar Shack expressed a need for a place to rehearse so here it is! The Guitar Shack has been open for two years and has become the local hub for guitarists and their needs. There are two teachers available for tuition, as well as an experienced guitar technician, so come on down and play some guitar. Bookings for the Prac Shack can be made on 0407 858 256. producer. In this day and age, quality recording gear is cheaper and more accessible than it was 10 or more years ago, but in saying that, no matter how competent your guitarist may be at recording, it still takes some know-how and experience to get up to the standard of the big production stuff, and selfrecording can end up being a big headache for a bad result if done incorrectly. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve heard some great recordings come out of a band’s own studio, and it’s definitely worth a shot if it’ll save you some coin, but here is an option I give some bands who need to take some shortcuts. Drums have to be recorded correctly, so they need to be done at a studio. If in your case your guitarist can record at a certain standard, track the rest yourself at your leisure, hire a good microphone or two if you don’t have one (especially for vocals) then take the finished stems to a mix-and-master engineer to give it the professional touch. I’ve done this process with other artists before and even though not ideal, the results are often great! David will be writing monthly for PEARL, sharing his advice and answering any questions you may have regarding the recording studio and music production in general. If you’d like Dave to answer your questions, drop him a line at studioqanda@pearlmag.com.au.

Being a huge Beatles fan I thought I would kick off the classic “must have” album review with the Beatles’ 1967 album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. It is a landmark album that perfectly captures the culture of that time, turning the world on to the sounds of psychedelia and the Flower Power generation. It also set new directions in the way bands made albums. Up until that point, artists had to get into the studio, make an album quickly and get out and tour to promote it because the cost and availability of studio time was limited. By the end of 1966 the Beatles had had enough of touring and were more interested in spending time in the studio creating better music. Because of the Beatles’ huge profit-making sales, their label EMI could hardly refuse. It paid off as Sgt Pepper set new sales records and paved the way for other bands such as Pink Floyd, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and later on Led Zeppelin. The album itself was a concept idea that Paul McCartney had about a band (which didn’t have to be them) playing to an audience without actually having to go out and perform, giving their fans a sort of compromise for their departure from live shows with a much more creative studio album. The opening track simulates a crowd waiting to see a band when it suddenly bursts into the title track, followed by an introduction to a fictitious vocalist called Billy Shears (Ringo Starr) with the classic song With A Little Help From My Friends, which inspired a great cover version from Joe Cocker the following year. Sgt Pepper also features such great tracks as

Lovely Rita, Good Morning Good Morning, Being For The Benefit Of Mr Kite, Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds and of course the epic closing track A Day In The Life. The album was released in England on a Wednesday and inspired Jimi Hendrix so much that he performed it that Saturday night at his concert. Sgt Pepper is one of the most significant albums in the history of popular music and became the biggest selling album of the ‘60s. If you haven’t already got this album, you should have! The atmosphere comes second to none and has a killer music selection that is bound to leave you bruised and battered from some seriously deadly moves! Once you safely reach the top of those never ending stairs, you pay $10 and get a stamp. LOVE the ink cos it doesn’t stay on my arm till Monday! Ha! I can to go to work without my boss hounding me about my “problem” with partying. For those who like to start your nite with a bang, the bar is right there as you walk in! And I can almost guarantee you will bump into at least 35,000 people you know as it is filled with lovely locals :) After a quick thirst quencher - not too many as

those stairs are hard enough to manage sober! – I squeeze my way through to the podium. The music is like a drug! Trust me, i’d somehow hook it to my veins if it was remotely possible. Within 30 minutes of dancing, I lose whatever dignity I arrived with. But no one cares coz everyone else has already lost theirs or is about to. If u r a local, I highly recommend Cruze. You only live once, may as well live it loud on the dance floor! So my little creatures of the night, Cruze gets 4/5 full moons. GET ON IT! Until next weekend. REVOLUTION

GOSSAMER Felicity Groom

Perth artist, Felicity Groom’s highly anticipated debut album has lived up to the hype spawned from the commended EP ‘Treasures’ and the popular debut single ‘Finders Keepers.’ Groom has established her own unique sound that draws on folk/pop influences, with the showcasing of her instrumental talent including autoharp, keyboard and guitar. Gossamer also features guest vocals and instrumentals from other Australian artists including Jebediah and Tame Impala. The album delivers gritty acoustic sounds and a voice that resonates with audiences. The emotive lyrics paired with minimalistic arrangements makes for a dark yet enchanting album that will ensure Groom’s well-deserved place in Australian music. 3/5 Jess Scudamore

SONS OF THE VANQUISHED Untruth

Having grown up on the peninsula I’ve seen a lot of local bands, especially in the heavier genres, come and go. This occurs so sporadically that you’d think there was some industrial machine churning out groups and destroying them as soon as they start receiving the smallest amount of recognition. Local metallers Untruth have dominated that machine, gaining a loyal local following as well as massive amounts of national support,

( 26

PEARL magazine

culminating in support slots for American heavy-weights Static-X and Tassie Death Metallers Psycroptic in their recent Aussie tours. The boys’ latest single, ‘Sons of the Vanquished’ is a hard hitting reminder of why they’re still the kings of local metal and how they are pushing the ‘melodic death metal’ genre into the forefront. The single track opens up with all hands on deck. Drummer Mark Van De Beek and bassist Ryan Frost lay down the foundation for a fast paced thrash inspired beat, with guitarists Jesse Taylor and Stewart Pike setting the scene for the guitar development through the 3 minute 50 second onslaught. Vocalist Ben Roberts has reached a new pinnacle in vocal maturity, and with controlled rage he delivers well-structured vocal parts, staying true to the ‘melodic death metal’ genre. Production value on this single is outstanding with the guys taking advantage of various effects and processes which you don’t routinely see in a small release single, but this is once again proof of the guy’s ability to deliver the whole package, from writing, recording and production. The track was even sent to Sweden for mastering. The only downside to this single is that it is exactly that… Only one track on this CD, but expect more from these guys in the New Year. If you haven’t check out Untruth yet, do yourself a favour, pick up a copy of ‘Sons of the Vanquished’ from True Tattoo, Frankston. Ryan Scoble

SOUNDS OF WAR Asylum

For those who’ve not heard of Asylum, here’s a quick intro they describe themselves as “five f*ckers playing what they love..” The band, hailing from Frankston, have been featured on Triple J’s Unearthed, played a gig with Blood Duster in August, are considering an interstate tour and in the meantime, will be at the Pier in Frankston playing with Dream on Dreamer in December. It would be fair to say they have put themselves out there as a force to be

reckoned with. Now on to the album. One phrase that comes to mind is mercilessly brutal, but with musicality still surprisingly in one piece. The first track Frontline, a music only track, is a bit deceptive, starting with nice mellow clean tones and building up into a nice little tune. It then transitions into the title track Sounds of War, where rapid fire drums kick in and the blisteringly aggressive vocals reveal what Asylum’s really all about - fast paced and raw somewhat “angry” sounding metal. Another notable track is How Many Times, which I loved for its range. The bulk of the song is in a similar fashion to the rest of the album, with the fast music and harsh edged vocals but it then turns a corner by breaking down to cleaner vocals and relatively slower instrumentals for the chorus. But if you’re anything like me, you’d want to know if the lyrics are good. Well fear not, the lyrics are worth taking in and are well thought out. The last detail that needs noting is that these guys are independent and are not signed up to any record label. Despite this their production work is good and the whole CD has a nice professional feel to it which I must give points for. This one is a good album for the lovers of extreme and heavy, heavy sounds. Iron Maiden and classic Sabbath fans might want to give it a miss, but it’d be right up the alley of Static X or Napalm Death fans. 4/5 Ben Lopez

character to each of the songs, beyond the atypical pop rock convention. Plus, it’s all strung together by the energetic and powerful vocals of front man Paul Bignell. From an engine room point of view, the 11 track release is littered with a few timing issues that break the fourth wall at moments, but that aside the production values could sit among most comparative releases from major labels. Good melodies, catchy pop rock, why wouldn’t you grab a copy? 3.5/5 Walter Benells

While it won’t replace U2’s New Years Day at the top of the play list new year’s parties, it is definitely worth a run and could be a hit with many this year. Michael Thomas

RIDE

The Scarecrows

After a sold out and highly successful EP launch in early 2011, The Scarecrows are back with their debut single, Ride - a beautifully produced track with instrumentation replicating that of their live setup. With an unequivocal sensibility toward acts like The Rolling Stones and early “raggy” Rock ‘n’ Roll music, Ride is essentially a commercially driven pop tune that builds upon the quintessential Scarecrows sound. Edgy guitar riffs and catchy melodies form strictly exultant shapes, whilst lyrically the song reflects personal conflicts involving religion, capturing a sense of what it is like to be free and “ride” into every world. With an unbelievable stage presence and eclectic live performances, The Scarecrows epitomise passion, a trait that has ultimately helped them sustain a loyal following. 4.5/5 Maddison Wilson

BEYOND THE DOOR

FOCUS TECH HOUSE 02 Various

Wasabi Recordings has a solid backlog of quality house compilations and the new Focus Tech House 02 release is full of worldly artists that deliver. One such artist is local (Shoreham) lad Ewan Scott aka Uone. His track “Waterloo”, originally released as a two track EP on German label, SUP DUB Digitales, has Uone’s trademark production with quirky tech grooves and dark manipulated vocals. It is a quality tech house track that will clock up plenty of play time. Another standout track is “Nanmonai” by Nicone and Tazaka. It also features vocalist Kaori. The track wobbles along with a carnival vibe yet Kaori’s vocals add warmth to the classy production expected from Nicone. Focus Tech House 02 is a compilation that showcases worldwide artists and covers the tech house bracket well. Check it out on beatport.com or Itunes. 4/5 T-Dub

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Stellarcaster

The debut record from Mornington Peninsula locals, Stellarcaster, is the culmination of more than a couple of years of the band working together to hone their craft and gell as an outfit. The result is an accessible and dynamic album, stretching across a number of styles and moods. Shifting between the straight ahead rock of Hot Rock Charge and the soft, bluesy guitar laden title track Beyond The Door, each song gives interesting chord changes and plenty of

to provide a wide range of assistance and humanitarian work on the ground. Fighting against poverty and making a difference is at the core of the release, with the added bonus being the delightful musicality also on offer. Clear guitar work and occasional harmonica coincide with Kerryn’s unique and strong voice which is woven in amongst the inherent storytelling in the tunes. Ideal background tunes for a Sunday afternoon chillout session. 4/5 Michael Thomas

MY CHILD

Kerryn Fields & Branches of Life

Kerryn Fields and Somer Hume (aka. Branches Of Life) met and formed a friendship at The Little Buckley Music Festival back in 2010, sharing a passion for music and charity work. The My Child EP is the result of many subsequent gatherings and catch ups, with all money raised through its sales to be forwarded to volunteers Africa, helping our Australian volunteers

Mt Eliza’s own bossa nova musician Adam Dunning has released a song in time for the holiday season. Happy New Year combines Adam’s unique polished guitar work with a well produced vocal performance. It’s something a bit different from Dunning, who is better known for more traditional and cosy bossa nova tunes, having spent years working between Melbourne and Rio de Janeiro, but he holds stead in a more accessible and familiar style nonetheless.

Just released, this digital download (available on iTunes) is an amazing collection of quality dance music designed to play in a relaxed environment. Tracks include an array of classic and inspiring house sounds from ATFC, Soulsearcher, Masters At Work, John Cutler and The Good Men (just to name a few), as well as two bonus one hour continuous mixes by Andy Daniell. This release is perfect for both the post clubbing audience and the discerning lounge lizard. Excellent background tunes for entertaining, having a few quiet beverages, or just chilling out on the beach on a warm summer’s day. It’s music for your head, as much as for your feet. Scott Gardner

TRACK OF THE YEAR w DJ Chardy

THE END

Tommy Trash Coming from a good mate, Tommy Trash, this record has been destroying my dance floors! Big beats with monster synth lines - I still play it every set, either early or late. Beware... this track can clear dance floors if dropped too early, so treat with respect. I’m really digging this sound at the moment, and hope it will be around for a while. Great to see some electro based music doing well overseas too. Tommy Trash, on da money.

SUMMER PARTY TRACKS

DJ Iceman Summer is here and the festivals are on their way. To coincide, a massive amount of fun upbeat music is being released – tunes to make you feel good. Here are a few of my favorite summer party tracks for the silly season:

My Top Ten of 2011

DJ Marky Mark 1. Avicii - LEVELS - A stunning, up lifting piano riff that hits all the right chords. One of the biggest records of 2011. 2. Calvin Harris - FEEL SO CLOSE Calvin Harris, the new David Guetta but with underground credibility. 3. Foster The People - PUMPED UP KICKS! (Skeet Skeet Show Edit) Skeet Skeet (Katy Perry’s tour DJ) does an outstanding job turning an indie crossover hit into a stomping club remix. One of my bigger tracks lately. 4. LMFAO - SEXY & I KNOW IT - Almost a novelty tune, yet commercially unstoppable, works in every venue. 5. Flo Rida - GOOD FEELING - Sampling the same vocal as Avicii’s Levels, this track gets serious FM radio play and does just as well in club land. 6. Luciana - I’M STILL HOT - An underground banger with hypnotic vocals, this is one of those peak time tracks sure to be massive over summer. 7. Adele - ROLLING IN THE DEEP (Tom Buster Remix) - This remix features a truly epic bass line, and has been my most played record all year. Adele’s vocals combined with the throbbing bass line sets floors alight. 8. Flo Rida (feat. Taio Cruz) - HANGOVER (Hardwell Mix) - A recently released record, this remix is getting the job done, get on it. 9. Sgt Slick - THAT’S WHAT THIS LOVE IS (Original Mix) - An extremely classy disco cut, I play this record at every gig without fail. The vocal is so catchy and the grooves stick in your head all day. Thumbs up to the Melbourne lad. 10.Calvin Harris (feat. Kelis) - BOUNCE – One of this year’s bigger commercial records, it still has underground coolness and is still getting the job done. DJ Marky Mark plays the McCrae Pavillion for ‘Sunday Somebodys’, every Sunday 3pm - 10pm through December & January.

1. Bombs Away SUPER SOAKER With 10 mixes available there is something for every clubber. This track has a crazy summer vibe that will have you bouncing and grabbing your water guns for a day of fun in the sun. Once you hit the dance floors it is time shake it to the infectious beats and vocals to tracks like ‘Big Booty Bitches’ or ‘Sexy and I Know it’. 4/5 2: Oh Snap – MR. OUZO Oh Snap are back with another bouncy tongue in cheek, cheesy club pop track. It’s a great one for the pubs as the punters will bounce around chanting the ‘can we drink, can we drink’ chorus. There are four mixes on offer with the best one for me being ‘Disco Fries’ with a back beat straight out of 90’s with a new electro kicker. A fun track for the floors or to be pumped out of the stereo for the back yard BBQ. This one is for summer, but not a long stayer. 3.5 / 5 3. Avicii – LEVELS We have all heard this one being flogged on the radio as the backing to Flo Rida’s ‘Good Feeling’ but the actual track itself is an amazing piece. Hunt down the ‘Skrillex’ mix as it is a killer, with heaps of punch without being too in your face. Dub Step a definite club floor filler for the next few months. 4.5 / 5 4. Lloyd (feat. Lil Wayne & Andre 3000) – DEDICATION TO MY EX Massively played on the radio, a very upbeat sing along and boogie track. The mix worth looking at is the ‘Jump Smokers (dirty)’ mix. While using all the right elements of the original, this mix has taken it to a new level with a great bottom end and decent breakdowns, great for the dance floors. 4/5 5. YouTUBE parody - ‘I’M SANTA & I KNOW IT’ A very funny and clever piece done by some guys on the Gold Coast and sure to make your day. DJ Iceman plays the latest & greatest dance, RnB & party tunes on Friday & Saturday Nights at Playhouse Bar, Mordialloc.

A POET’S PERSPECTIVE

Peninsula Poet, Andrea Louise Thomas

with Andrea Louise Thomas

I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Andrea Louise Thomas and I’m the Arts Editor for Pearl Magazine. In this capacity each month I collect information about everything happening on the Peninsula and Frankston in the arts and popular culture scene and then present it to you in the ‘Polished’ pages of Pearl Magazine. Our aim is to create a comprehensive listing of what’s on in this area. Polished will incorporate visual arts, theatre, opera, spoken word, poetry, film and all creative endeavours close to home. From time to time, this may also include events relating to food, wine, antiques and crafts. When requested, I will tailor bespoke editorials for those businesses wishing to advertise with us. This can help to further enhance the profile of your business and in turn attract more clients. Pearl needs advertising to cover its operating costs but, first and foremost, the magazine is about providing relevant and interesting information to the reader. I am keen to meet as many people as possible and will work towards a timely response to all correspondence and calls. My goal is to please both the reader and artist to build a strong resource for arts and culture on the Peninsula and Frankston. Should you have any enquires for me feel free to write to me at artseditor@pearlmag.com.au. Cheers from your Arts Editor, Andrea

As a child, Andrea’s life was ‘filled with the clack of typewriter keys’. Her father was a writer who wrote all of his thirtyone books on a manual typewriter. Andrea knew as a child that she wanted to become a writer. She started writing stories at about 8 yo. It wasn’t until her teenage years, however, and later during her time at the University of California, Berkeley while completing a degree in English Language and Literature that she became interested in poetry. Poetry, according to Andrea, is the ‘ultimate form of human expression’. Poetry can be happy, sad, funny and incredibly insightful. It was her ‘deep and personal desire to connect with other human beings’ that led Andrea to share the grief she experienced when her husband died of cancer, leaving her a widow with two young children. Her poems, The Little Red Wagon and Curveball are a window into the pain and anguish Andrea experienced. In Curveball Andrea expresses how she felt, ‘I was down one player forever. I was now captain and wasn’t sure I was up to it’. Andrea felt compelled to share her poetry in the hope of helping other people who have also experienced loss. ‘Love is the inspiration that allows us to continue to grow in the face of calamity,’ according to Andrea, a line which all can relate to. In the face of tragedy it is the love we send out and the love we receive which helps us to pick up the pieces and carry on. Like many, Andrea is also ‘frequently influenced by love’, whether it be true love, or even a secret crush. As a performance poet, Andrea has been

a finalist or feature poet in a number of events, such as the State Final of the Australian Poetry Slam, the Overload Poetry Slam and Poetry Idol at the Melbourne Writers Festival. Andrea describes performing at such events as ‘terrifying, but incredibly exciting’. Andrea reflects upon how ‘technology is separating us from our humanity’ in her poem Lift Up Your Heads. Most would admit to multi-tasking, texting whilst talking to a friend or deciding to contact a friend on Facebook instead of picking up the phone and engaging in the nuances of conversation. Poetry is an outlet that allows us to connect to what makes us human, our deepest feelings. Andrea admits that as a poet she is extremely ‘sensitive to the environment’; simply admiring the beauty of the magenta blossoms outside her window can inspire a new poem. Andrea recently finished her residency as an Australian Poetry Café Poet at the Mornington Peninsula Library. Andrea will be continuing to perform her poetry at local venues as well as in the city. She also teaches poetry workshops in local schools and does public speaking at community organizations. Her poems are published in Paradise Anthology, but she hopes to publish her own collections too. Andrea is currently in the process of setting up the Peninsula Poets Society (P.P.S.). If you are interested in hearing Andrea recite her poems, speak at your organization, have her teach a workshop at your school or join P.P.S. contact her at: artseditor@pearlmag.com.au

CULTURAL EPICENTRE

POLISHED

The Frankston Arts Centre is the cultural epicenter of the Mornington Peninsula. Gone are the days when one would have to commute to Melbourne to see Bell Shakespeare, Opera Victoria or the Melbourne Comedy Festival. An extraordinary variety of local artists, theatre and dance groups, school productions, musicians, circus performances and concerts now all ensure the well-trodden floorboards of FAC appear on most performance agendas. No matter what you are searching for, there is a performance or exhibition to suit everyone’s taste. The venue resonates with artistry of every possible description, whether you want to take in a show or get some hands on experience. The FAC offers regular programs for children, such as the Hip Cat Circus and Hot Art for Cool Kids. Adults may enjoy the Writer’s Block program, designed to encourage emerging writers with professional mentors. Every nook and cranny at the FAC has something to show for itself from photography to jewelry to sculpture or painting. There’s always something to see at the FAC. The Peninsula Poets Society is a grassroots group of local poets from Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula looking to promote poetry in their region. Local poet, Andrea Louise Thomas, who was the inaugural Café Poet or Poet-in-Residence at the Mornington Peninsula Library throughout 2011, came up with the idea hoping to raise the profile of poetry on the peninsula and establish an organisation to meet the needs of poets and audiences alike. The mission of P.P.S. will be to seek local venues to host poetry readings and hold sponsored poetry competitions for both page and performance poets. As a group, PPS will source

funding to publish an anthology to promote its writers. They also hope to source affordable printing for those wishing to self publish, coordinate with local recording studios and artists to produce spoken word CDs, and seek air time on local radio to produce a poetry program. Please join in the plethora of peninsula talent by becoming a member of P.P.S.. The first meeting will take place in the meeting room at The Mornington Peninsula Library, Vancouver Street, Mornington on Saturday 4 February, 2012 from 11am to 1pm and every first Saturday thereafter, except for April.

Multi award winning Manyung Gallery is an icon of the arts scene on the Mornington Peninsula. It has the largest and most comprehensive collection of contemporary art outside of Melbourne and its monthly exhibitions attract a great number of enthusiastic visitors. In addition to offering a brilliant diversity of high quality artwork, Opening Night at Manyung is also part of the social fabric of the peninsula. While the artwork is what people come to see, it’s also a great evening out. Patrons have a chance to speak with the exhibiting artists, the proprietors and a fascinating array of local people. Opening Night generously offers the delightful fruition of local vineyards free of charge so wine tasting is also part of the evening. In winter there are cosy fires burning and in summer there are breezes blowing. Manyung is made up of several interconnecting galleries that make viewings both intimate and free flowing. In addition to its spacious indoor viewing spaces, Manyung features two outdoor viewing areas with both paintings and sculptures on display. A favourite space is what locals call “The Castle”. It’s a huge turret with a high ceiling and is surrounded by a moat outside which has a drawbridge leading up to it. It seems to mesmerise the children and charm the adults. A canopy of trees, interspersed with lovely garden beds, surrounds this interesting building. Manyung also has an excellent restaurant on the premises. The highly lauded Boys@Manyung serves up delicious breakfasts, lunches, dinners and drinks from a beautiful outdoor courtyard deck and bar area. Manyung is a gallery with so much to offer, one could easily get lost viewing the monthly rotation of colourful, diverse, thoroughly engaging contemporary art, sculpture and jewellery on display. Each December Manyung features an outstanding exhibition in its Christmas collection. This year Merry Christmas 2011 at Manyung in Mt Eliza features art works by Peter Coad, Lisa Cox, Janine Daddo, Annie Glass, David Hart, Kate Hudson, Tracey Keller, Claire Kirkup, Nikki Perzuck, Jenny Riddle and Jed Winter. These works feature bold colours, vibrant patterns and timeless images whether painted or sculpted. There is also a great Christmas exhibition at Manyung’s sister gallery, Manyung at Sorrento, throughout December. This features art work by Stella Clarke, Meredith Gaston, Joanne Hunt, Michael Jenkins, Kim Kennedy, Rose Knight, Craig Penny, Stewart Westle and Ross Willsmore. For more information, visit manyunggallery.com.au Ph: 9787 2953 in Mt. Eliza or 9982 0622 in Sorrento.

PENINSULA MUSIC FESTIVAL

Attention music-lovers: earmark the first week of January in your diaries for the fifth Peninsula Summer Music Festival. This annual festival, which has some of the Peninsula’s most spectacular wineries as its backdrop, will bring together some old favourites and new voices, with opera, jazz, baroque and chamber music performed by superb Australian and international artists. And of course the music will be accompanied by the best food and wine the region has to offer. The gala opening is on Tuesday, January 3, at Montalto Restaurant with the sublime voice of soprano Greta Bradman. The former psychologist, who decided to give up her day job for a singing career, hasn’t looked back and is now with Sony Music, releasing her 2nd album, Grace, in August. If you’re a lover of baroque then you won’t want to miss the opportunity to see the northern German tradition of Abendmusik at St Peter’s Church in Mornington on Wednesday, January 4. This candlelit concert will feature soprano Siobhan Stagg, German altos Dorothee Merkel and Robert MacFarlane, and tenor Nick Dinopoulos. The program of German sacred and secular music will showcase the church’s organ.

PLOS Musical Productions is a unique organisation dating back some 50 years. PLOS stands for Peninsula Light Opera Society, a name that characterised the body of work the group produced when they started out in 1963. The words ‘Musical Productions’ were added later on to reflect their modern repertoire of musical theatre that is enjoyed by audiences today. The PLOS group is a non- professional organisation, meaning all those involved in their productions are volunteers. Most members of the group combine their passion for musical theatre with full-time work or study. Cast and crew are involved in every single aspect of bringing a production to life. They make all of their own sets and costumes, source and create props, design and coordinate lighting, master sound design and work with live orchestras, in addition to training their acting troupe. Their level of dedication to the art of theatre and stagecraft is of an exceptional standard and their passion for the craft ensures consistent delivery of professional shows, a testament to the hard work of the cast & crew. The group’s next production, The King and I, will be on at the Frankston Arts Centre starting on New Year’s Eve and running through to January 8, 2012. For more information visit plos.asn.au

London-based Australian violinist Patrick Savage will perform Nuit d’amour with Donald Nicolson on piano at Main Ridge Estate in Red Hill South on Thursday, January 5. Siobhan Stagg will play Cleopatra the following evening at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington in Johann Hasse’s 1725 opera, Antonio e Cleopatra. The performance features a speciallycommissioned costume for Cleopatra by the Australian Ballet’s costumiers. Moorooduc Estate will open its doors for the first time in the music festival’s history to welcome back favourites the Ironwood Chamber Ensemble on Saturday evening, January 7. Then, on Sunday evening, Simon Marytn-Ellis (Germany/Australia) teams up with Dorothee Merkel to explore German song across four centuries. The musical fare will include works by Schutz, Bach, Schubert and Brahms along with some rare Renaissance and traditional folk songs. The event, at Vines of Red Hill, will include a fourcourse meal of local produce and wines. For further music festival details and bookings go to: http://peninsulafestival.com.au MELINDA OGDEN

Double Vision is an exhibition that uses contemporary methods to explore notions of the body and what it means to be human. Traditionally the play between the artificial and the real has been a fascinating and enduring subject within contemporary art. The digital age has enabled artists to go even deeper into the realm of trickery and guise, blurring the world of imagination and reality - a move which the exhibition capitalises on through its highly realistic, hyperrealist and photorealist pieces. Double Vision presents a selection of artists who explore the art of representation accordingly. Each extend beyond the tradition of Realism, of capturing the truth of the subject and the commonplace, and boldly move into the increasingly blurred territory of the digital and artifice, the factual and fictitious. Double Vision includes painting, photography, digital image and sculpture by Stephen Birch, Lyndell Brown & Charles Green, Juan Ford, Petrina Hicks, Cherry Hood, Sam Jinks, Justine Khamara, Rosemary Laing, Ron Mueck, Jan Nelson, Evan Penny, Patricia Piccinini, Julie Rrap, Alexander Seton, Ricky Swallow, Colin Suggett, Christian Thompson and Ronnie van Hout. The exhibition will run until 18th March. McClelland Gallery and Sculpture Park, 390 McClelland Drive, Langwarrin. For more information: mcclellandgallery.com

CULTURED What is this thing we call arts and culture and what does that mean for the Mornington Peninsula? Culture enriches our lives and allows us to contribute to a wide range of social and community objectives. Culture shapes our identity, values and enhances our experiences of life. It is through cultural pursuits that we develop talents and skills, creating stories and meaning, helping us to find ways to relate to the broader society. Cultural heritage provides communities with solace and inspiration through its buildings, artefacts, skills, values and social rituals of the past. It also connects us to histories and collective memories, anchors our sense of identity and offers a source of insight to help us face the future. Cultural heritage is the total of our past creativity. The result of creativity is what keeps society going and moving forward. The Mornington Peninsula is home to people from diverse social, cultural and economic backgrounds who live in a mix of urban and rural areas. Each of the 40 individual towns and villages has its own cultural identity, interests and needs. Each community has a different experience of cultural heritage, engagement and aspiration, but all share a similar interest in belonging, access and civic participation. Increasingly, it is acknowledged that participation in high quality arts and cultural activity makes a profound difference to the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities (Mills & Brown, 2004, Arts & Wellbeing) So, how do we increase and improve opportunities to engage in arts and culture, or be part of an ongoing dialogue about what arts and culture mean for communities? Where do we find it? How do we experience it? It surrounds us in our daily lives. Libraries are hubs of community cultural activity. They are places to read the daily paper, borrow a book or DVD, entertain and teach children and parents alike to love books. They also offer a space where people can meet for coffee, find an inspiring or uplifting poem of the week, or use the widely available computer pods and gaming consoles. There are exhibition spaces, community group meeting spaces, and loads of cross-community information. Then there are forums such as history groups where stories and memories of times past are

kept. These are places where our elders can save, catalogue and share community life and identity. The peninsula has 22 of these groups available to the public. Festivals and events offer a way to celebrate a place and provide an opportunity for communities to come together to enjoy the best of our towns. What is of note are the arts and cultural collaborations that build the profile of a particular place. Whether through its community theatre, volunteering, its artists or sports events, these are the life of a place and the ways we gather to enrich our lives. The arts are colourful, vibrant, enthusiastic, exuberant and only one of the many ways we can explore culture. I have the pleasure of working with many people currently ‘moving and shaking’, dusting off and creating or maintaining a myriad of exciting opportunities in arts and culture on the peninsula. A new website - acreativepeninsula.com. au - will be introduced over the coming year to incorporate profiles of local peninsula history and heritage, venues such as halls and clubrooms, facilities, equipment, visual arts and crafts exhibitions, performing arts activities, music, theatre, dance, literacy and writing programs and tourism businesses. SPECTRUM OF ARTISTS AT OAK HILL GALLERY One of the most wonderful characteristics of community run Oak Hill Gallery is its willingness to give emerging artists a fair go. It is a place where new artists blossom and seasoned artists ripen. This December, Oak Hill offers both ends of the spectrum. Emerging artists Marlene Petroff and Jo Wreford will be exhibiting in their first solo show. Marlene’s show is called Recent Work featuring delicate, botanical images imprinted with textures from nature. She creates watercolours and monoprints that contrast warm and cool colours with flowing washes. Jo’s show is Port Phillip Bay and Beyond. She paints gorgeous scenes spotlighting iconic images around the bay both in close up and further away. Jo’s work oils are awash with colour and the intimate feeling of place. Jo is a commissioned portrait painter whose paintings were entered into the Archibald Prize in 2010 and 2011. Along with these new kids on the block is Imants Neidra, a well known local artist of Latvian descent whose still life and floral pieces soothe a room and are reminiscent of Cezanne, but remain distinctly Neidra. His timeless seascapes sweep the viewer away into another world at once recognisable and yet unidentifiable. Imants has a very distinctive style that once seen, is never forgotten. His paintings are peaceful and calm, yet always seems to be moving and it’s hard not to move along with them. You can see the confidence in his work from the fine detail, to the vibrant colour and the

exquisite crispness of his images. His artwork is fresh, uplifting and joyful. Simultaneously featured in December are a group of watercolourists in a show called Seasons featuring Jan Dayton, Pam Hearn, Christine Hill, Cheryl McKinstry, Jill Starbuck and Ann Warr. These concurrent exhibitions are on offer until December 21st. Starting on January 3rd and running through to February 1st is the Peninsula Postcard Show. This exhibition has been steadily growing in popularity as it gives all artists a fair go whether they are emerging or established artists, locals or from interstate. All artists are given the opportunity to exhibit and sell their work in this show. Prizes are either cash and/or art supply vouchers. Patrons will enjoy the chance to buy small and individual affordably priced art. On January 17th, kids will have a chance to get creative too. From 9:15 until 3pm, the Moran Foundation is providing a free Children’s Photography workshop (for kids 8-12) with professional photographer, Nicki Jackson. The best works will be exhibited January 21st at Oak Hill. These selected works will then automatically be entered into the Moran National Portrait Prize. Incidentally, Oak Hill Gallery runs a brilliant School Holidays Art Program for children aged 8-12 from the 9th to the 20th or January in a wide variety of media. Classes are only $15 per session. More exciting exhibitions are already being

planned for 2012, so keep an eye out for information on the upcoming Connected Voices exhibition that will be taking place from 5th to 29th February. Visit the little white Victorian villa with a heart for the community at 100 Mornington-Tyabb Road (next to the Mornington Rose Garden) and you’ll never be disappointed. RIOT OF COLOUR AWAITS AT RON ROACH The Ron Roach Gallery is a collection of art spaces in Balnarring, each with its own distinct flavour. As the gallery’s namesake, Ron’s own contemporary paintings are bold, lively, modern and engaging - not likely to be overlooked. Being a self -taught artist has given Ron the flexibility to paint outside of the square. In fact, there is nothing square about his work. His contemporary is contemporary all the way. His style is diverse and he can draw exquisite pastel portraits of man or beast as well as painting expressionistic oils and acrylics. Ron started out as a portrait painter and his work was entered into the Archibald prize five years running. His classic Australian portraits are particularly poignant. Ron also has a specialised line of cheerful and bright children’s/nursery artwork called the “Jitterbug” range. This is the collection that greets you when you first enter the gallery and they are a riot of colour. The middle gallery,

next to Jitterbug, is now featuring the artwork of a young man from Ghana, Africa, named Nii Kpetenkple. His work is soulful and vivid. It incorporates geometric patterns and visions of people and places such as the local markets of Accra. Another unique feature of this gallery is its outdoor art range offering both innovation and decoration. Ron designs one of a kind door murals to be displayed either as free standing artwork or part of a garden feature wall. If all these talents weren’t enough, the former school teacher is also a licensed masseur whose nimble fingers relax the backs of the Hawthorn Hawks and Balnarring folk alike. The Ron Roach Gallery offers a diverse and eclectic range of artwork, ethnic handicrafts and sculpture. MORNINGTON SEA GLASS Mornington Sea Glass resurrects artifacts from the sea and reshapes them into original artworks. Proprietors, Amanda Hilditch, partner Paul and their two young children, have a passionate love of the Mornington Peninsula - past, present and future - which is translated into everything they make. The family has a keen interest in the history of the area and believe each piece of glass washed up on the shore has a story to tell. Some of the glass dates back well over a hundred years, something that can be detected from the colour of the glass. Amanda calls these pieces, which most would characterize as flotsam and jetsam, “sea gems”. This is apropos as they are then crafted into exquisite works of art.

FINDING HOME AT BALUK ARTS By Andrea Louise Thomas Baluk Arts is a convergence of indigenous artists from all over Australia. It’s a cultural nexus where true locals are connecting, sharing their stories, creating original artworks, networking, training and workshopping in a welcoming space. This connection and the opportunity for selfexpression are crucial to the work of artists. In Aboriginal artwork particularly, this form of communication is essential where signs and symbols are used when words may not be adequate or translatable. Each artist at Baluk Arts brings his/her own history and unique thread to weave into the tapestry of work on display. Art is part of the healing process for many artists whose lives were turned upside down by the Stolen Generation and the ripple effect that still permeates their community. Baluk Arts wants to send a new ripple out – one of hope, healing, teaching, mentoring youth, creating cultural sustainability and an ongoing legacy for future generations of Aboriginal children. The group aims to reach out to local community members, but also hopes their ripple will resonate far and wide so that Australian Aboriginal art is recognised and appreciated internationally. Baluk Arts has published a selection of stories of the Boonwurrung people, told from an indigenous perspective. The book titled Baluk Wurrung; Stories from Aboriginal

people in South East Melbourne, looks at the past, present and hopeful future of the Boonwurrung people told by 15 local Aboriginal artists.

Baluk Arts is generously giving away two copies of this book. To be in the running to win, simply ‘Like’ Pearl Mag on Facebook or ask to join the Pearl Mag Facebook group. FALLS MUSIC & ARTS FESTIVAL READY TO RAW

RAW, the iconic family music festival to raise money for all things important to this planet, is on again in March at Morning Star, Mt Eliza. The community’s commitment to the environment, conservation and animal rights has ensured the success of the RAW (Respect All Wildlife) festival over the years. However, what has also made this event an annual highlight is the ability of its organisers to attract mega talent. RAW 2012 is no exception, with a sensational line-up that includes Mat McHugh of The Beautiful Girls, Jeff Lang, Dallas Frasca and The Fireballs. As the frontman for The Beautiful Girls, Mat McHugh has a huge following and is sure to have the crowd in the palm of his hand when he hits the stage at Morning Star Estate on Sunday, March 18. The woman with the gigantic voice, Dallas Frasca, will also be belting out a few numbers. The winner of the Musicoz Awards’ Artist of the Year in 2010, Dallas is sure to liven things up at the Estate. Australian-based singersongwriter Jeff Lang has built up a reputation for original performances and is a true crowd pleaser, so his attendance will undoubtedly draw a huge following. A leading performer

in the Australian roots music scene, Lang’s music is heavily influenced by the folk music of the southern US and UK, but with a distinctly Australian lyrical content. Lang’s guitar playing, which mixes folk, blues and rock styles with Indian and African modalities, is real treat. A coup for organisers was gaining the support of The Fireballs, who formed in Melbourne in 1990, only to break up and reform eight years later to support Motley Crue. Known for their hard and fast style, these pioneers of Australian psycho-billy, who were an influence on The Living End, have a loyal fan base and are still playing shows around Australia and internationally with a slightly altered lineup minus Matt Black. Eddie Fury and Joe Phantom remain. Others to look out for during the RAW music festival include Dream Boogie, Papa Chango, The Animators, The Cavalry, Rhys Crimmin and Todd Cook. There will also be plenty to keep the kids - and the big kids at heart – entertained, with handson animal experiences and educational talks. As the organisers say, “Through thinking globally, the event will provide support for a critical situation off and on our shores.” www.raw.org.au MELINDA OGDEN

MORNINGTON PENINSULA & BAYSIDE

Each Australia Day thousands of peninsula residents pour into Mornington Park to enjoy the music and festivities before lining the cliff tops for the grand fireworks finale. This year the Shire will be taking the entertainment to a new level with an exciting collaboration of Oz music icons guaranteed to entice the most thunderous “Aussie Aussie Aussie” chant our annual seaside event has ever seen. Drawing members from some of Australia’s legendary acts like Icehouse, Geisha, The Models and Boom Crash Opera, peninsula patriots are in for a treat as Chris Doheny’s Oz Made pay tribute to Australian music featuring true blue classics from Billy Thorpe to Powderfinger and everything in between. If that’s not enough to set the flags waving, the green and gold icing on the cake is provided by a very special guest performance by

The Badloves front man and the peninsula’s own Michael Spiby. A familiar face to local music fans, Chris Doheny has certainly kept busy in the music biz since he first stepped on stage with 80’s super group Geisha in 1984. Signing worldwide with EMI and gaining eight Australian Top 10 singles in the following few years, including a number 1 spot with the single ‘Kabuki’, Chris was commissioned to write for other notable acts such as Daryl Braithwaite, James Blundell, Lee Kernaghen and international acts including Andrew Ridgeley from Wham. In the 90’s Chris scored Australian chart success again with another two Top 10 singles as front man for Dragonfly and in 1994 saw the release of the single “More Than A Game”. . . a song picked up by the ‘Channel 9 Footy Show’ as it’s opening theme, and still one of the most familiar songs on Australian Television today. When asked if he could pull together a custom line-up especially for Mornington’s Oz Day In The Park, Chris was quick organise a great line up of mates from his years on the Australian rock circuit including Stephen Morgan, an ARIA Hall Of Fame inductee as member of Icehouse. Tom Hosie from The Models with James Freud was next on board closely followed by Tommy Rando who has played with the likes of Taxiride, Boom Crash Opera and was responsible for co-writing the number 1 ARIA hit ‘Wasabi’ for another peninsula grown boy, Lee Harding. Together they make OZ MADE, and look forward to turning Mornington Park upside down this Australia Day with a rocking collection of pure Aussie music for all. Oz Day In The Park kicks off with some great activities for the kids courtesy of Cool4Kids Entertainment starting from 3pm featuring facepainting, balloon sculpting, roving performers and a kids concert finishing with the ceremonial raising of the Australian Flag. Michael Spiby and Oz Made hit the stage just after 6pm and will rock your Aussie socks off right through until the Fireworks at 9pm. Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi!! SIMON MILLS

Jimi Hocking is one of the many exciting performers just announced for the new look Westernport Festival, held over the last weekend in February on the picturesque Hastings Foreshore. With two music stages running across the annual three day event, Entertainment Coordinator Simon Mills has also confirmed Red Ink, Lee Harding, Nat Allison Band and aspiring new local rockers Astral Flight on the bill. Festival favourites Dirty Boogie and The Australian Bruce Springsteen Tribute Show will join the legendary blues man and Screaming Jets axeman Jim Hocking, for a rocking backdrop to the popular Sunday car show that draws thousands of enthusiasts each year. One of very few Australian festivals to feature daily water ski shows, the Westernport Festival is renowned for extreme aerial motocross displays, BMX and skate competitions, and a huge fireworks extravaganza on the Saturday night to the music of feature act New Jersey: The Australian Bon Jovi Show. If you haven’t witnessed a Westfest … then definitely don’t miss this one! Stay tuned for more details in next month’s issue of Pearl. The Westernport Festival, Hastings Foreshore, February 24-26.
