Wow what a great spring for the Charolais breed and what will the future look like. We saw some new buyers in the market and some that have tried Charolais before expand the numbers they are using. When you have the order buyers and feedlot operators using more Charolais bulls on their own cows, with many of them being blacks, you know the producers they buy calves from are going to get the message of what they should be using. JGL Livestock, which is one of the premier order buying firms in North America, bought over 40 Charolais bulls this spring to put on a portion of their many thousand cows. Kirk Sinclair, owner of Prairie Livestock at Moosomin, Saskatchewan, added another 40 Charolais bulls to his bull battery to go on mainly black cows. Highway 21 Feeders out of Alberta increased their Charolais bulls in their 250 head bull battery and there were more stories of producers adding Charolais bulls to their black cows.

We have to resell the idea of crossbreeding and the advantages of it. I asked one cattleman who was switching and his main goal was to increase weaning weights. We know the Charolais bull will calve and the hybrid vigor should look after the rest. Another producer who has predominately straight bred Simmental was impressed with the calving ease and vigor at birth of his Charcross calves. There are so many advantages to crossbreeding that we need to tell.

It was an interesting time this spring bull sale run. There were some incredible positives in the Charolais market and a few softer sales that are hard to explain. The sales started off strong and for the most part were that

way, although the later sales in the season which historically see a strengthening in prices saw some pressures. I had one breeder from Ontario email me this question and have printed my response, which I think sums up the last half of the bull sales.

What is your sense for the sales being softer this year, when people are getting more for their stockers than they have for a long time?

This spring the stocker market was dropping the further we went along as the high cost of feed kept the feedlots losing money. The fat cattle market should be better than it is but the US economy has put a cap on that as well. There is also the fear of the unknown with the new proposed mCOOL changes the US have put forward. This doesn’t look positive for Canadian fat cattle going to be harvested across the line.

I know out here, guys were just getting grumpy with the long, hard winter and attitude is very important come sale day. Like in many areas, the feed stacks were going down and the price was going up and guys were starting to count pennies to buy hay.

I also think that last year we sold a lot of bulls and there are a lot of young bulls in the industry and fewer cows. Not that it affected Charolais, but there are less commercial heifers being bred this spring so not as many heifer bulls were sold.

I am writing this on April 30th in Regina and woke up this morning with a bit of a blizzard with high winds and 3 to 4 inches of snow. The whole spring has been challenging for everyone. There were not many sale days across the country that didn’t have some weather issues, be it snow, freezing rain, bad roads or below normal frigid temperatures, and I

think this contributed to some sales that weren’t quite as good as anticipated. I think many commercial producers hadn’t realized it was spring and they needed to buy bulls. Many have not semen tested yet so there will be some market still out there between now and grass time. Many sales offered increased numbers after last year’s strong sale but probably holding the numbers steady would have been more in tune with the market, as evidenced at the end of the season.

There will be some higher calf losses this spring as well, as many producers weren’t equipped to handle the colder than normal weather when they started calving. Some have joked that there will be two sorts this fall selling calves –with and without ears.

We would like to welcome the new General Manager of the Canadian Charolais Association, Kelly Carson, who introduces himself in this issue, and thank the board of directors and office staff who have put in extra time in the last six months keeping things caught up. It is always interesting when fresh eyes come into an organization and relook at how and why we do things.

There are a number of provincial association events taking place this summer and I would encourage everyone to attend as many within and outside their province as possible. For example the Saskatchewan Association is celebrating 50 years in conjunction with the CCA AGM. Manitoba is having a picnic and cattle display the end of June in Miami and of course Ontario is hosting the CCYA Conference and Show in Shelburne.

Aux ventes de taureau ce printemps réussie était la race du charolais. Il y avait des nouveaux acheteurs du taureau charolais et dʹautres qui ont acheté à augmenter leur nombre de taureaux du charolais. Les acheteurs bovins et les opérateurs des parcs d’engraissement ont acheté plus de taureaux du charolais pour employer dans leurs propres troupeau de vaches ; la plupart de ces vaches sont le couleur noire. « JGL Livestock » est lʹun des premiers acheteurs bovins en Amérique du Nord. Ils ont acheté plus de 40 taureaux du charolais ce printemps pour multiplier avec leurs plusieurs mille vaches. Kirk Sinclair est le propriétaire du « Prairie Livestock » au Moosomin, SK. Il a acheté 40 taureaux du charolais pour multiplier avec ses vaches principalement noires. « Highway 21 Feeders » en Alberta emploie 250 taureaux pour multiplier ces vaches et il a également accru le nombre de taureaux du charolais ce printemps.

Nous devons revendre lʹidée du croisement à un taureau du charolais et rappeler les avantages de la croix des ces veaux charolais à lʹindustrie de boeuf. Jʹai demandé à un producteur qui changeait en multiplier ses vaches du taureau charolais et son but principal était dʹaugmenter des poids de sevrage. Nous savons que les femelles multipliées à un taureau du charolais vêlent et la vigueur hybride augmente lʹexécution. Un autre producteur a été impressionné de la facilité de vêlage et de la vigueur à la naissance de ses veaux croissé charolais, et lui il multiplie habituellement ses vaches simmental à un taureau simmental. Les gens doivent être mis au courant les avantages du croisement charolais.

Ce printemps il y avait quelques positifs incroyables aux marcher du charolais et quelques ventes qui qui étaient moins réussis. Les ventes ont commencé fort mais les ventes plus tard dans la saison ont eu des difficultés à vendre tous les taureaux pour de bons

prix. Historiquement les ventes postérieures ont vu le renforcement dans les prix. Il est difficile dʹexpliquer ce qui est arrivé à ces ventes qui étaient moins réussies. Un sélectionneur dʹOntario m’a envoyé par courriel la question suivante, et vous trouverez ma réponse.

‘Quand les producteurs sont payés plus pour leur veaux qui vont aux parcs d’engraissement ce quoi votre réponse pour les ventes étant moins réussis ?’

Ce printemps les parcs d’engraissement ont perdu l’argent à cause du coût élevé dʹalimentation. Pour cette raison le marché a diminué pour des veaux destiné aux parcs d’engraissement. Le marché aux bestiaux gros devrait être meilleur ce quʹil est mais lʹéconomie des États Unis a mis une limite. Il y a également la crainte de lʹinconnu avec les nouveaux changements de « mCOOL » proposés par les États Unis. Les bovins canadiens gras envoyés à travers la frontière pour l’abattage cette nouvelle proposition n’est pas positive.

Moi je sais qu’ici dans l’ouest les fermiers étaient vraiment frustrés avec l’hiver qui quitte jamais. Lʹattitude est très importante le jour de la vente. Dans beaucoup de régions les provisions dʹalimentation a été presque vide et le prix de lʹalimentation augmentait. Les vachers commençaient à compter leurs pièces à acheter le foin.

Je pense également que nous avons vendu lʹannée dernière beaucoup de taureaux. Ces plus jeunes taureaux sont encore productifs dans lʹindustrie et il y a moins de vaches à multiplier.

Jʹécris cet article le 30 avril à Regina et jʹai réveillé ce matin à une tempête de neige avec de vents forts et trois à quatre pouces de neige. Le printemps a été dur pour chacun. La majorité de ventes à travers le pays a eu des affaires de temps si cʹétait la neige, la pluie de congélation, mauvaises routes ou au dessous des températures glaciales normales. Ce mauvais temps a contribué à quelques ventes nʹétant pas aussi bonnes comme prévu. Je pense beaucoup de producteurs commerciaux n ʹont pas réalisé que le printemps est

arrivé et cela quʹils ont dû acheter des taureaux. Beaucoup de taureaux nʹont pas encore été sperme examiné pourtant tellement il y aura toujours un certain marché dehors. Beaucoup de sélectionneurs ont augmenté le nombre de taureaux à vendre au lieu de maintenir le même nombre que lʹannée dernière. Démontré à la fin de la saison de vente de taureau, le maintien du même nombre de taureaux pour se vendre aurait été plus approprié pour le marché.

Il y aura une augmentation du nombre de veaux perdu ce printemps. Beaucoup de producteurs nʹont pas été équipés pour manipuler des températures plus froides que normalement quand ils ont commencé à vêler. Certains ont plaisanté qui les veaux seront assorties dans deux catégories cet automne à vendre – les veaux avec des oreilles et les veaux sans oreilles.

Nous voudrions faire bon accueil à Kelly Carson, nouveau directeur général de lʹassociation canadienne du charolais. Il se présente dans cette revue de la Charolais Banner. Nous remercions également le conseil dʹadministration et le personnel de bureau qui ont travaillé extra dur les six derniers mois pour maintenir les services de bureau et d’adhésion. Il est toujours intéressant quand quelquʹun nouveau hérite une organisation pour évaluer comment et pourquoi nous faisons ce que nous faisons.

Il y a plusieurs événements dʹassociation provinciaux cet été. Jʹencourage chacun à assister à autant dʹévénements comme possibles. Introducing a New GM

Kelly Carson, General Manager

Hello! It is my great pleasure to introduce myself to you. My name is Kelly Carson and I am the new General Manager of the Canadian Charolais Association.

I was born and raised on the family farm in northern Saskatchewan and while I was growing up, my family worked a mixed farming operation; that is where my love of cattle was nurtured. As a result, my career has evolved through various agriculture and business experiences over the past 25+ years.

I am certainly looking forward to taking on my role with the Charolais Association and to work with a breed that has put its share of money into my pockets over the years. Having worked at 27,000 and 35,000 head feedlots I know which breeds of cattle make money and which don’t. I have participated in many trials on Charolais and Charolais influenced cattle and I know first hand that the Charolais breed succeeds.

My role as the General Manager will be to support the Board of Directors and Officers of the Charolais Association. I am committed to working with all of the Association members to help grow the breed even further and to help bring the Charolais influence to even greater heights. On behalf of the Association, I am committed to representing the best interests of our members on everything cattle related throughout Canada and I look forward to spending time getting to know the members on their farms. As your General Manager, I want to hear your opinions and comments whenever you have something on your mind. I will answer my phone when it

rings and I will respond to all emails.

This country was built on the backs of our family run farms and it will continue to move forward in that manner. That is why I feel it is so vitally important to have extremely strong relationships with all levels of government because we need to use our voice and have it heard. I want to work with industry partners to grow the beef business because that is just the right thing to do. My dad taught me many years ago and in his words, it’s always best to “just do the right thing.”

On the personal side, my wife, Tracey, and I live in Cochrane, Alberta, with our two loyal four legged companions, Maggie & Shiloh. We enjoy many outdoor pursuits including camping, golf, hiking, mountain biking and various other sports. We also love to travel and are particularly drawn to warm, sunny locales. It has been said that behind every successful man is a loving, supportive woman; in my case I am fortunate to have a partner who has always stood right by my side.

In closing, I look forward to working with the Board, Officers and staff of the Canadian Charolais Association, who in the end all work for, and in the best interests of, the membership. I have a saying that I use from time to time; someone can tell you they’ve done things but if you can’t see the end result, you may question if those things were done in the first place. The way I look at it, if I say I’m going to go and pound fence posts, at the end of the day, anyone can go count them. So, I am now off to pound some posts.

Bonjour ! Il est avec plaisir de me vous présenter. Je m’appelle Kelly Carson et je suis le nouveau directeur général de lʹassociation canadienne du charolais.

Jʹai grandi à la ferme de ma famille dans le nord de la Saskatchewan où ma famille avait une opération cultivatrice mélangée. Mon amour de bétail a été consolidé chez la ferme. En conséquence les dernières 25 et plus années les divers expériences dʹagriculture et dʹaffaires a évolué ma carrière.

Jʹattends avec intérêt mon rôle dans lʹassociation et également à travailler avec une race qui a mis sa part dʹargent dans mes poches au cours des années. Après avoir travaillé pour des parcs d’engraissements de 27.000 à 35.000 têtes de bétail, je sais quelles races

de bétail font lʹargent et ce qui pas. Jʹai participé à beaucoup dʹépreuves sur les charolais et ceux influencé par le charolais et je sais moi même le succès de la race du charolais.

Mon rôle en tant que directeur général sera de soutenir le conseil dʹadministration et des dirigeants de lʹassociation canadienne du charolais.

Je suis commis à travailler avec tous l’adhésion de l’association pour accroître le succès de la race et à pousser lʹinfluence du charolais encore à de plus grandes tailles. Au nom de lʹassociation, je suis commis à représenter les meilleurs intérêts de nos membres sur tout connexe de bétail au Canada. Jʹattends avec intérêt de vous rencontrer, les membres de l’association. Je veux entendre vos avis, idées et commentaires comme votre directeur général. Je répondrai à mon téléphone quand il sonne et je répondrai à tous vos courriels.

Ce pays a été construit sur les dos de nos fermiers et il va continuer comme ça. Cʹest la raison que je la sens tellement importante d’avoir des rapports extrêmement forts avec tous les niveaux de gouvernement ; nous devons employer notre voix et la faire entendre. Je veux travailler avec des associés dʹindustrie pour accroître les affaires de boeuf. Il fait beaucoup des années que mon père mʹa enseigné à faire ce qui est juste et exacte.

Mon épouse Tracey et moi habitent en Cochrane, Alberta avec nos deux chiens, Maggie et Shiloh. Nous apprécions beaucoup de poursuites extérieures en faisant du camping, du golf, de la randonnée, de la montagne en vélo et les autres sports. Nous aimons également voyager et en particulier aux lieux chauds et ensoleillés. On dit qu’en arrière de chaque homme réussi est une femme

It is less than 3 months to go until the Charolais Youth are Making Tracks in Shelburne, Ontairo! This summer the CCYA National Conference and Show is going to be held in Shelburne from July 17th– 20th. Shelburne is a pleasant little town about an hour north of Toronto.

Our goal is to have youth from right across the country join in on the fun! The Ontario Juniors are very excited about the upcoming show and the opportunity it presents to the youth.

This year’s conference organizing committee is made up of Holly Smith and Randi Aldcorn as Co chairs, Courtney Black is the Secretary, Emily Bromley is the Treasurer and Billie Jo

Junior participants will be expected to complete written reasons on three classes and oral reasons on one class, as determined by the organizing committee. The time limit for each class will be 20 minutes. The Intermediate and Senior participants will complete the same classes and be required to submit placing cards as well as complete oral reasons on all three classes.

We are very excited to reunite with everyone and meet new faces that will become lasting friends!

Closely Check Pastures at Turnout for Potential Poisonings

Much has been written about the classic lead poisonings we see when cattle consume lead plates from broken down batteries. There are many other causes of poisonings in cattle at pasture many of which cause death and which there is no antidote. We must prevent these whenever possible. I have personally seen some of these and will go over areas where they are encountered and stress why pastures need a quick check over each spring before cattle are released.

There was a recent veterinary report by Drs. Barry Blakely, Lorrie Fraser and Cheryl Waldner on poisoning by Sodium Chlorate, a herbicide and type of soil sterilant. Because it has sodium in it there is a salty taste which attracts cattle. Our practice also experienced this same poisoning several years ago where a producer lost over ten cows when some Sodium Chlorate had been left on a pasture. The cattle gained access when they were turned out in the spring. This case went to court but the judge ruled the producer was at fault for not checking the pasture before the cattle were released and was as much to blame as the person that had left the product!

Cattle are inquisitive and are not fussy eaters so will nibble at most things. The products like sodium chlorate and battery plates which are also salty are especially hazardous. My best advice is when checking pastures pay close attention to three main areas. One is fence lines especially along roadsides. Products can be thrown out of vehicles and get onto your pastures. We have known about batteries for a long time but many more are now used for electric fencers and solar water pumps. Don’t leave these when they no longer

retain charge. Remove them and have them properly recycled. Your problem typically will not be right away but after several years when the batteries crack, break open and expose the extremely toxic lead plates. After several years of overgrowth these batteries become extremely hard to find.

The second hazardous area is old garbage dumps and burrow pits. Most old farms had an area where old equipment metal and other miscellaneous garbage was left to decompose or was burned. Check these areas closely every spring and fence them off if possible. Weathering and the freeze thaw cycle may expose hazardous products that were buried long ago. Have a check through these areas both at spring turnout and late in the fall when pastures are short. This is when cattle searching more forage will start to root in bush areas. Calves are very inquisitive and often will be the first to consume these products and show clinical signs. Also because of their smaller size need a much lower dose to develop clinical signs.

The third and most common source of poisonings is around abandoned yard sites or abandoned vehicles. Most old yard sites on the prairies are left perhaps because of a sense of nostalgia history and preserving our heritage so they are never properly cleaned up. Doors breakdown or other openings are created for access to buildings. Cattle will explore these areas and old garages especially could contain several old products which could be very harmful to cattle. Years ago all the paints were lead based and there were much less controls on herbicides insecticides cleansers and the like. Containers or bags slowly breakdown over time. These old garages have kept the elements like

rain or snow from breaking down the products. While these old archived sites may contain some treasures like stashes of money they may also contain very harmful products for your livestock. Check them out.

Any time you rent or take over new pasture be sure and ask the owner if there are any old yard sites, dump areas, or other places the public has access too. The yard sites may be secluded in the bush and hard to find. Other questions asked may be has any stuff been hauled in like fill dirt or other products from industrial sites. Has their been any gas or oil activity where lots of people, equipment and products have accessed the land.

Check your own premises closely this spring before turnout. An especially good time is when checking and repairing fences. Properly remove and recycle old batteries and any other toxic chemicals not in use. Even if livestock recover from toxic ingestion with products such as lead there is also the age old question when would the milk or meat be fit to be consumed? These various compounds can often cause permanent internal organ damage resulting in poor doing unproductive animals in the future as well. Some of the insecticides there may be an antidote for but that is if they are founds in time and that rarely is the case as most of these poisonings occur at pasture in the spring or fall when cattle are not being observed as closely.

Be diligent, check this spring and let’s try to avoid the panic call of several dead cattle being found. This is especially traumatic when it is preventable. This is true to the saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Happy grazing.

A big crowd came out on the first nice sale day in four years. Beck Farms, Lang put forth a solid set of bulls with good demand from both the commercial and purebred breeders on the top end. They sold nine or 25% more bulls with the overall average being down about 12%. McCoy Cattle Co., Milestone had 24 Hereford bulls average $3,606 and 29 ½ Gelbvieh bulls average $3,222.

During a snow storm, the sale was postponed for three days, as many could not get out of their yards. This is never an easy decision but in the end probably was the right one, as a decent sized crowd and an active telephone pushed the average higher than last year with more bulls sold. This quality set of performance bulls found homes across Saskatchewan and Manitoba with five going into purebred herds. 13 Red Angus averaged $4,115 and 24 Angus averaged $3,648.

This spring saw many sale crowd sizes hampered by weather and this was the case with some bad roads leading to Dropmore. The front end of this good quality offering sold well across the three prairie provinces with

six bulls selling into breeder herds. The seven Simmental bulls averaged $4,543. Many repeat local customers were also on the buyers’ list.

When you start a sale with 24 people in the stands you are nervous. Two days before the roads were closed and the side road to the CSS sale barn was blocked for a ¼ mile about 8 feet deep. The demand for two year old bulls was definitely higher this year with Rosso Charolais, of Moose Jaw, having the highest average they have ever experienced. For the first time Howe Red Angus supplied all the Red Angus bulls and 31 averaged $4,056.

The 25 Red Angus yearlings averaged $3,702 with a stronger top end than other years. The Charolais offering saw more calving ease coming from the Trojan bull and strong demand for this.

2013 Spring Bull Sale Summary

2nd Highest Average Ever — 2nd Largest Grossing Spring Ever at over $10.5 million

According to statistics, the 2013 overall sale average and overall gross were the highest in the 32 years that the Charolais Banner has been compiling bull sale results.

There were 77 sales reporting in 2013 with the overall average down a slight $352 and 79 more lots selling. Total gross sales were down $558,520.

A quick overview shows that of the 66 sales reporting in both 2012 and 2013, 23% of those sales had an increase in their over

all sale gross. There were 29 sales grossing more than $150,000. There were 23 sales selling more than 40 lots.

Mature bulls were up in average $5795 with 6 1/6 more lots selling in 2013.

There were 98 more two year old bull lots selling in 2013 with a decrease in aver age of $464. 56% of sales with two year olds selling had a two year old average above $4000.

There were 25 less yearling lots selling in 2013, realizing a decrease in average of

$359. Of all the sales with yearling bulls selling, 33% of the yearling sales averaged over $4000.

The Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show COMPETITION AND SHOW RULES AND REGULATIONS

COMPETITION RULES

1. Entry The Canadian Charolais Youth Association (CCYA) show and Conference is open to all youth members in Canada or foreign countries who are registered members of their respective associations. Canadian members must have paid their $15.00 active membership fee to the CCYA or their $25 active membership fee to the CCA to be able to participate in the conference (see http://youth.charolais.com/membership for more information). CCYA members may include their $15 membership fee with their application form for the Conference and Show. Registration for the Conference enters the youth members in all competitions.

2. Ages The age division for the competitions will be: Junior: 12 and under; Intermediates: 13-16 years; Seniors; 17-21 years, as of January 1 of the current year.

3. Photography Competition The photography competition is open to all participants. The photograph must be taken by the youth member exhibiting it. Photos should depict the purebred or commercial Charolais industry. Points will be awarded on clarity, quality, originality and relationship to the Charolais industry. Presentation and/or framing is not permitted. Photos must not be larger than 8” X 10”. Bring your photo entry to the conference and enter when you register. Only one photo per exhibitor will be accepted. Pictures entered in past competitions will not be accepted.

4. Art Competition The art competition is open to all participants. All artwork must be done by the youth submitting it. The artwork must depict something directly related to the Charolais industry. It cannot contain photographs. Any medium may be used: pencil, crayon, pastel, paint, fabric, wood, clay, etc. Originality is the key. Presentation and/or framing are encouraged but no points are awarded on this basis. Artwork must be brought to the conference and entered when you register. Only one entry per exhibitor will be accepted. The highest placing between photography and artwork competitions will be used in aggregate and scholarship points. Artwork entered in past competitions will not be accepted.

5. Showmanship Competition The showmanship competition will be divided into the three age categories. Animals will be made available for participants not exhibiting in conformation. If the youth have their own animal, it must be used for the competition. Showmanship will be a non-fit/dry-brush competition; animals that have been fitted will not be allowed to be used for the competition. The assigned ring marshal’s decision will be final.

6. Team Grooming Competition The team grooming competition will be twenty minutes in length. Teams of junior, intermediate and senior participants will be arbitrarily made prior to the show. Yearling heifers will be used exclusively for the competition. Heifers are to be washed and clipped prior to the competition but dressing prior to commencement will result in disqualification. Teams will be evaluated on the use of equipment, knowledge, skill, involvement, final appearance and presentation of the heifer. The judge will select up to three teams in each split to bring their heifer back to compete for the overall title. Teams that qualify for the final, if available, will have an hour to groom an unclipped animal. If not available, teams will have an additional 5 minutes per team to touch up the original animal in the show ring. The use of unethical or artificial fitting practices will result in immediate disqualification and under no circumstances will be tolerated.

7. Team Selling/Judging Competition All participants will choose between team marketing and team judging. This will be chosen at the time of registration. Teams will be made up of two members who are in the same age category. Teams will be made prior to the conference, but the committee reserves the right to modify teams based on actual attendance.

a. Team Selling. Each team will have approximately 5-7 minutes to sell an animal, embryo, semen or related product to a prospective buyer. Teams will be judged on knowledge, enthusiasm, group cooperation/involvement, and overall ability to convince and sell.

b. Team Judging The hosting province has the authority to choose if one or two classes will be judged. If expected to judge two classes, in the first class one team member will be responsible for the ring-person duties and the other will place the class and give a set of oral reasons to the audience. In the second class the team members will alternate positions.

8. Individual Marketing Individual marketing evaluates participant’s ability to promote a product (or service). Time is given at the conference; participants are not permitted to use/submit materials in advance.

c. Junior: Individuals are given a choice of individual selling, or developing promotional item - one of: a radio ad, or a magazine ad. Tape recorders and art supplies will be provided for the ads. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to prepare their marketing campaign.

d. Intermediate: Participants will be required to compare and critique two advertisements of the same medium, and will be judged on logic and effectiveness. Participants will be judged in originality, and content. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to complete their questionnaire.

e. Senior: Individuals will be required to develop a marketing plan for a specific scenario. The product/service will be selected by the organising committee prior to the conference. A set of questions will be provided as a template for the plan, as well as necessary background information. Forty-five (45) minutes will be given for individuals to prepare their marketing plan. Plans will be submitted in writing and will be judged on logic, clarity, creativity and originality, and effectiveness.

For Intermediates and Seniors the top 5 participants, based on their written marketing piece, may be asked to return and given a face-to-face sales pitch to the judge.

9.Keep and Cull Competition Participants will compete individually and learn the basics of keeping females in the herd on the criteria of past performance and appearance. Members will be given EPD’s and a farm based scenario according to the competitors age category, as developed by the judge prior to competition, and will be expected to select three females from a pen of five. A class will be held by the judge prior to the competition to explain the fundamentals of EPD’s and what the industry is looking for in today’s producing animals.

10. Judging Competition Members will compete individually and will judge classes of steers, females, and bull calves. Junior participants will be expected to complete written reasons on three classes and oral reasons on one class, as determined by the organising committee. The time limit for each class will be 20 minutes. The Intermediate and Senior participants will complete the same classes and be required to submit placings cards as well as complete oral reasons on all three classes.

11. Oral Reasons Members will compete individually by presenting their oral reasons on previously judged steers, yearling heifers or bull calves. Junior members will only complete one set of reasons on a chosen class. Only junior members will be allowed to refer to their judging cards while giving their oral presentation. There will be a time limit of two minutes.

12. Herdsmanship Competition The organising committee will group youth exhibiting with those youth without cattle at the Conference and Show. This allows for juniors without cattle to help those with cattle and to meet new people. All members are encouraged to help keep their alley swept and clean and to help one another out. Teams will be limited to a maximum of six members and will be made by organisers according to the youth members’ experience/age and the number of animals to be cared for by the team. A select group of unknown judges will be monitoring the activities of the participants and will compare notes to pick the winners. All families with cattle will be in the same herdsman group unless notified by the families that this is unwanted. Farm signs will not be permitted.

13. The Grant Moffat Memorial Ambassador Award Members will be evaluated on the helpfulness, willingness, encouragement, spirit, and general attitude towards the conference and fellow participants. A select group of unknown

judges will be monitoring the activities of the participants and will compare notes to pick the winners. Members will be evaluated in their respective age categories. A ballot will be filled out by CCYA members attending the Conference and Show and will also be used in the judging process.

14. Education Awards Education award monies will be awarded on an overall point basis at the conference and show. Eligibility requirements are listed in the CCYA Policies and Procedures, section 21. The amount of education award monies will be $1800, with $1000 for 1st, $500 for 2nd and $300 for 3rd place, based on the breakdown of the following competitions: Judging & Oral reasons 35%, Ambassador 20%, Showmanship 10%, Photography or Art (best of) 5%, Keep & Cull 10%, Individual Marketing 15%, Essay Competition 5%.

15. Aggregate Competition

Juniors: Points will be awarded as follows: photography/art – best 5%, judging 25%, showmanship 10%, herdsmanship 5%, individual marketing 10%, team marketing or team judging 10%, keep/cull 5%, ambassador 10%, team grooming 10%, oral reasons 5% and 5% for bringing cattle.

Intermediates & Seniors: Points will be awarded as follows: photography/art – best 5%, judging 30%, showmanship 10%, herdsmanship 5%, individual marketing 10%, team marketing or team judging 10%, keep/cull 5%, ambassador 10%, team grooming 10%, and 5% for bringing cattle.

The first and second place winners in each division will be awarded belt buckles to recognise their accomplishments. Additional monies may be awarded at the discretion of the Conference and Show organising committee.

16. Conformation Classes Offered

I. PUREBRED

a. Bull Calf born in 2013

b. Heifer Calf born in 2013

c. Yearling Heifer born in 2012

d. Female born in 2011 with natural 2013 calf

e. Female born in 2010 or previous with natural 2013 calf

f. Champion & Reserve Purebred Female (top 2 animals from classes I(b-e))

II. COMMERCIAL (50% Charolais or visible Charolais cross)

a. Heifer Calf born in 2013 b. Yearling Heifer born in 2012 c. Female born in 2011 with natural 2013 calf d. Female born in 2010 or previous with natural 2013 calf

e. Champion & Reserve Commercial Female (top 2 animals from classes II(a-d))

III. SPECIAL CLASSES

a. Best purebred, designated red factor animal in the show.

b. Market steer (50% Charolais or visible Charolais cross)

Supreme Champion Charolais Female will then be selected from the top 2 animals from classes I(f) and II(e).

Entry deadline is June 15, 2013 and no entries postmarked after this date will be accepted.

17. Prizes All prizes and placings will be announced only at the banquet on the final night, with the exception of conformation.

CONFERENCE AND SHOW REGULATIONS

1. Absolutely NO parent/adult participation will be allowed. Barn bosses and ambassador volunteers will be monitoring the barn, wash rack, and tie-out areas at all times. Any parent/adult participation may result in a deduction of aggregate and scholarship points from the youth member in question. Senior members are encouraged to help the junior members. This includes the set-up and take-down of the stall.

2. All purebred animals entered must be registered with the CCA. Crossbred heifers do not need to be registered. Calves should be registered and must be tattooed by show day. No tattooing will be permitted on the grounds. Original registration certificates must accompany purebred cattle to the show, including all calves. Tattoos will be checked upon arrival.

3. Members showing animals that are owned by them or their family can enter as many head as they choose, keeping in mind that they are responsible for showing their entries. Members who cannot bring their own cattle but wish to enter the conformation show may enter an animal belonging to another Charolais breeder. However, members entering cattle not owned by them or their family are limited to only one entry.

4. Animals must be shown by the youth member entering them unless more than one entry is in the class.

5. There is no limit placed on the number of entries per class, however, the youth will be responsible for finding other youth to help them show.

6. The entry fee is $15 per class. Calves may be split off cows, but in the case of a pair that goes on to the finale, the heifer calves will be ineligible to be shown in the heifer calf division.

7. Classes will be determined after the entry deadline and will contain approximately eight to ten animals.

8. All animals are expected to be broke to lead. If in a case where the animal in question poses a threat to the safety of the other participants, the owner will be asked to remove the animal from the show barn. The Barn Boss will have final say.

9. A bedding base will be provided to all participants. Exhibitors will be responsible for their own feed for the duration of the conference. Night tie-outs will be available, as well as pens for nurse cows.

10. For all CCYA members the consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited on show grounds or during any show activities. Failure to comply with this rule will result in immediate disqualification and removal from the remainder of the Conference and Show.

11. Unethical fitting practices are not allowed in any of the competitions. This includes the use of artificial tail heads, and artificial fillers such as stomach filling; unless deemed necessary by a veterinarian.

12. Surgical alterations are not permitted on any animal being exhibited, unless a valid veterinarian certificate is produced that explains the reason for them.

13. All participants are expected to participate in all events, unless illness forces them out of competition. Youth not participating in all events will lose aggregate and scholarship points. Any youth that chooses not to participate in all events may be disqualified from all competitions and show, and forfeit any prizes or awards that they may have otherwise earned.

14. The show shirt is expected to be worn for conformation, showmanship and team grooming. Name tags are to be worn at all times.

15. The hosting CCYA Conference and Show Organizing Committee, Agricultural Society, or any of the show advisors or volunteers is not responsible for loss, injury or accident to animals, property or humans for the duration of the Conference and Show.

16. By submitting the attached entry form and signing the Code of Conduct, the youth member agrees to abide by all the above rules and regulations for the competitions and the cattle show. A group of adult advisors, including the Youth Coordinator have been appointed by the hosting Conference and Show Organizing Committee to enforce the rules and regulations. The hosting CCYA Conference and Show Organizing Committee has the power to, at any time, intervene to settle disputes or clarify the rules.

CANADIAN CHAROLAIS YOUTH ASSOCIATION CODE OF CONDUCT

The Canadian Charolais Youth Association strives to promote respectful behavior in all areas of its Conference and Show by youth participants and parents.Both the participant and their parents/guardian must sign this form prior to the youth participating in any Canadian Charolais Youth Association Conference and Show.

As a participating youth in the Canadian Charolais Youth Association I agree to abide by the following Code of Conduct:

1. Offer constructive support of my fellow participants.

2. Show appreciation of good work by competitors.

3. As a visitor to conference/show facilities and motel/hotel, respect the property and regulations of the host facility/motel.

4. Recognize the integrity of the judges and officials and respect the difficulty of their decisions and accept their decisions with good sportsmanship.

5. Respect the feelings of all participants and the efforts made by all.

6. Learn at least one new skill during the course of the conference/show.

7. Express thanks to organizing members, sponsors, and officials for helping to present the Conference and Show.

8. By word and deed, offer leadership to new conference/show members.

9. Refrain from using alcohol or drugs during the entire time of the Conference and Show.
