Demetri Economedes, DO ’07 “When I was nine, my dad ruptured his Achilles tendon. When I saw the impact the surgeons had on his life, I became interested in medicine as a career. I chose orthopedic surgery because you have the opportunity to work with every type of patient, from children with scoliosis to elderly patients who need joint replacement to athletes with injuries. I think the best thing in the world is having the ability to directly impact people’s lives by helping them regain the function they’re used to having.”

Walter C. Ehrenfeuchter, DO’79 Professor and Director, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, GA–PCOM An internationally known OMM educator who has been teaching PCOM students for over 25 years, Dr. Ehrenfeuchter has enjoyed the challenge of establishing a new program at the Georgia Campus and relating his passion for OMM to a new generation of students. “OMM is good for your patients, it’s good medical care, and it adds a unique dimension to your practice that tells you more about people’s problems than anything else. I can’t imagine practicing medicine without it.”

Lisa Lee (MS/ODL ’08) Inspired by her late grandmother who was the matriarch of her family, Lisa is dedicated to developing social service programs for the elderly as part of a coalition working to increase selfsufficiency for immigrants and refugees from Southeast Asia. “The Organizational Development & Leadership program at PCOM has helped me connect my family experience to who I am as an individual and what I do for my life’s work. I’ve also learned how to build a strong team and how to be an agent for positive change in society.”

John Cifala, DO ’45 Dr. Cifala is a charter member of the PCOM Alumni Association Board who has served for more than 50 years. His passion for the College is also reflected in his generosity as a member of the Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society. “PCOM put me on the road to success. Not only did I succeed in my professional life, but PCOM introduced me to my wonderful wife, Laura. As a result, grandchildren, nieces and nephews became DOs. I feel a deep commitment to contribute to the institution that made it all possible.”

Mission Statement Paul W. McGloin, CPA, LLD (Hon.) Chair, Board of Trustees “Each year, I am utterly amazed by the quality of PCOM students, their passion for learning and serving their patients, and the myriad ways that they give back to the community. They inspire me to ensure that we are providing a high-quality education at the most reasonable cost possible while continuously enhancing the facilities and programs we offer.”

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is dedicated to the education of students in medicine, health and behavioral sciences. The College fosters the growth of the osteopathic profession by training physicians through programs of study guided by osteopathic medical tradition, concept and practice. Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to the advancement of knowledge and intellectual growth through teaching and research, and to the well-being of the community through leadership and service.

Educational Goals The College’s educational goals focus on presenting high-quality, comprehensive programs of study that embrace the following expectations of student learning: • Students will demonstrate a central core of biomedical or behavioral science knowledge in their field of study, including theory, foundations, clinical skills and applied clinical/ practical applications as appropriate to the specific academic program. • Students will demonstrate communication skills through clinical assessments, group discussion and/or written or oral presentation in their respective fields.

Matthew Schure, PhD President and Chief Executive Officer “We feel a deep obligation to help our students fulfill the aspirations which brought them to PCOM. At graduation time, we want them to determine their careers based on what their hearts tell them rather than their debt levels. That is why we work hard to create an innovative operating environment that helps to drive down our rate of tuition increases while increasing scholarship dollars and other funding that benefits our students.”

Passion in Practice | 2007 Annual Report

• Students will demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry by designing, conducting, presenting or interpreting research in their field of study as appropriate to their academic program. • Students will identify, retrieve, understand, analyze, synthesize and apply information collected from various sources and in varied formats, including those requiring skills in the use of information technology.

Chair & President’s Message Every day in countless ways, we witness passion in practice among members of the PCOM community. In the classroom, the research lab, the exam room and the community, their personal passions drive their enthusiasm for their studies, their work and their spirit of generosity. This annual report focuses on some among us whose passion and commitment have resulted in outcomes of excellence. We rejoice in their accomplishments and in our College that has helped to foster them. As an institution, PCOM continues to manifest excellence in our instructional, research and community service efforts by virtue of our passion for continuous improvement. During the past year, the College witnessed the endowment of the PCOM Center for Chronic Disorders of Aging by the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation. We also received the affirmation of accreditation for our PsyD program in clinical psychology and a new accreditation by the National Association of School Psychologists for our doctoral program in school psychology. This fall, our Georgia campus welcomed its third osteopathic medical class and second biomedical class, having hosted another successful visit from the American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation during the spring. All of these endeavors have flourished in the climate of respect and collegiality that is PCOM’s hallmark. Thanks to unprecedented leadership support and increased participation, the College received over a million dollars in contributions from individuals in one year for unrestricted use. And our enrollment has grown to its highest level ever, with nearly 1,800 medical and graduate students in Pennsylvania and more than 300 at our Georgia campus. We wish to thank every member of our community for your continuing passion and commitment to PCOM, which makes possible our enduring success and leadership in medical education. We invite you to share any ideas you have for the College as our community continues to move forward.

With warmest regards,

Paul W. McGloin, CPA, LLD (Hon.) Chair, Board of Trustees

Geraldine Terry, RN ’45 Geraldine Terry, RN ’45, wife of the late Morton Terry, DO ’45, generously donated $100,000 to the Annual Fund this year. “PCOM is where I met my husband and that’s where our whole future started. The College has given me everything I have and I’m very grateful. I wish I had much more to give to PCOM. The students and everyone connected with PCOM are so deserving. It’s very satisfying to see today’s students continue the tradition of caring and giving to others.”

Melissa Bailey (DO ’08) 2007-2008 Bernard F. Master, DO ’66, Scholarship Recipient “I have always felt called by the Lord to become a doctor in underserved communities where so many children don’t receive the proper care or love. As a pediatrician, I hope to establish an urban community health center that would help to meet the needs of such children. Receiving scholarship support from alumni who have a similar vision and mission in life has been very encouraging, and it has motivated me to begin organizing a new scholarship for future PCOM students.”

Passion in Practice | 2007 Annual Report

Pamela Ruoff Campaign Director Director of Alumni Relations and Development A 25-year PCOM veteran, Pam is truly passionate about fostering relationships with alumni and encouraging them to stay engaged with their school and with current students. “So many PCOM graduates have phenomenal achievements. Their continuing involvement will help to ensure that PCOM remains a highly respected, vital institution in which all graduates can take great pride.”

Scholarship & Development

Lita Indzel Cohen, Esq. Member, PCOM Board of Trustees Chair, Development Committee “PCOM students are trained to get right into the soul of their patients, and they truly have a heart for serving others. That’s what makes me passionate about this institution and the incredible work it does. I want to energize people to care about supporting PCOM with the same passion PCOM teaches students to care about their patients. I’m delighted that we had 100 percent participation from the Board and extraordinary participation from faculty and alumni for this year’s Annual Fund.”

Jared Zavilla (MS/PA ’08) Sara Somers Rupert, RN ’33, Scholarship Recipient “When I was sick as a kid, I always found it amazing that a day after I went to the doctor, I felt better. That’s how I became interested in medicine. I decided to become a physician assistant in emergency medicine or surgery because you care for the ‘sickest of the sickest.’ I think it’s an amazing privilege when patients put their lives in your hands and you have the opportunity to help get them through the crisis.” Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine

Students & Academic Pursuits Ashley Toole (MS/Biomed)

Lt. Jason Duff, (PsyD Clinical ’08) “I have always been interested in mental health, and I’m excited to be pursuing that passion while serving my country as a U.S. Navy clinical psychology intern. To have the opportunity to help members of the military who have been on the front lines in Iraq is really satisfying. I love developing a bond with my patients and serving as a patient advocate, fostering a sense of respect for these people who have given so much.”

6|

Passion in Practice | 2007 Annual Report

“Working with patients as a medical assistant and a clinic administrator inspired me to want to care for patients myself. I love the intellectual challenge that goes with being a physician, and the Biomedical Sciences program at GA-PCOM has prepared me well for entrance into a medical degree program. I hope to open my own family practice and volunteer in underserved areas in the South.”

Jennifer Alvarado (MS/FM ’08)

Robert “Brad” Abrahams (DO ’09) “I love the South because my family roots are here. Years ago, my great-grandfather was a rural doctor. Without him, many people would have gone without medical care. Today, the South still has a shortage of doctors and I want to help fill the gap. I give my studies at GA-PCOM my all because I know that everything I learn will translate into better care for my patients in the future. I’d also love to help bring more osteopathic training to the South.”

A science teacher for 13 years, Jennifer wants her students to enjoy learning. Her forensic medicine studies at PCOM have provided fascinating subject matter for the hands-on forensic science curriculum she designed for Cinnaminson (NJ) High School. More students are enrolling in her classes each year. “I learned so many things at PCOM that are making classes more exciting for my students— fingerprinting, facial reconstruction, blood spatter. They love it! The fact that students have fun while they learn is my reward.”

Mary Sharp Ross, EdS/Psy ’07 (PsyD) Mary loves working with children who speak English as a second language in the Bethlehem (PA) Area School District. An educator for nearly 30 years, she had long aspired to become a school psychologist so she could do more to help these children and their families. The PCOM program offered at night has enabled her to realize this goal. “Providing support to immigrant families is essential to their children’s success in school. It is deeply satisfying to be able to help in this way.”

Service & Community Outreach Oliver Bullock, DO ’78 Director, PCOM Healthcare Center – Cambria Division “To treat patients effectively, you have to become involved in the community because it plays such a vital role in their overall health. We’ve started many community health education programs, including a video produced for elementary school children with puppet characters teaching them not to be afraid of the doctor. Over 7,000 children in Philadelphia have seen it. Such health initiatives are especially important in the inner city where the needs are so great.”

8|

Passion in Practice | 2007 Annual Report

Courtney Scrubbs, MS/Biomed ’07 (DO ’11) Courtney’s passion is helping children in underserved areas make the most of their lives. During her “Bridging the Gaps” experience and service through the Student National Medical Association, she encouraged young people to develop healthier lifestyles and relationships. “So many children have soaring aspirations. Striving for these dreams helps them avoid unhealthy behaviors that may jeopardize their success in life. I want to be a physician who emphasizes aspiration to empower while shaping health policy to ensure that these children have the care and resources they need to realize their purpose.”

Kathryn Sosnoski-Giorgini, DO ’07

Huy Do (DO ’10) This year, Huy organized a medical mission trip to his homeland, Vietnam, recruiting a team that included five PCOM students. The team provided health care and health education and donated medicine and medical supplies to the community they visited. Huy plans to pursue more mission trips and a career in academic medicine related to global health. “It’s important for medical students to learn about the culture and health situations in developing countries; I believe it will make them better physicians.”

Kathryn received the Reuben B. and Estelle Loeb Scholarship in recognition of her desire to practice in an underserved environment. “I have wanted to be a physician for as long as I can remember. I love the science of medicine, but more importantly, I love caring for patients and their families. I also believe that it’s important to give back to the community. My residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center gives me the opportunity to serve an urban population that desperately needs solid medical care and education.”

Naceme Azizzadeh (DO ’09) Naceme served as an officer of the Student Government Association during the inaugural year at GA-PCOM. Now, a former SGA president, she notes the unique role that the organization has played on the new campus. “We created the culture and set the tone for a warm and welcoming atmosphere for this new school. We shaped committees, developed good communication between the students and faculty, and organized clubs and community outreach projects. We’re proud that we started traditions that may continue for many years.”

Laura Molloy, PA-C Assistant Program Director, Physician Assistant Studies

Paul Evans, DO ’79 Vice Dean and Chief Academic Officer, GA–PCOM

As the first recipient of the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching from PCOM’s graduate programs, Laura takes particular pride in the innovative community service curriculum she developed for the PA program. Guest lecturers discuss the psychosocial aspects of medical issues, and PA students develop presentations and speak to community groups on topics tailored to their needs. “Developing this curriculum reflects my desire to make a positive impact on society . . . that’s the driving force behind my work.”

“Building a new medical school in the PCOM tradition in Georgia is an exciting venture. As our graduates enter the community as dedicated and highly skilled osteopathic physicians, they will improve health care for the citizens of Georgia and other southern states. We are energized by this opportunity to expand the influence and reputation of PCOM and osteopathic medicine in the South.”

Peter Rogers, PhD Associate Professor, Anatomy, GA–PCOM “With the cloning of the human genome, clinical medicine is in the midst of a revolution. We’re seeing huge technological advances, and cell therapy and gene therapy have become a reality. Our students need to understand these new developments. I feel very excited and fortunate to be teaching molecular and cellular science and genetics at a time when this field has become so critically important to the future of medicine.” 10|

Teaching & Research

Dawn Shell, PhD Assistant Professor, Pathology, Microbiology and Immunology

Brian J. Balin, PhD Director of Basic Science Research, Center for Chronic Disorders of Aging “My favorite uncle had Alzheimer’s disease. To watch him deteriorate into a vegetative state was awful. Alzheimer’s disease takes away the essence of who we are as human beings. It’s intolerable to me, and I am compelled to defeat this disease. I’m determined and confident that our research is going to lead to improved health for individuals with this and other chronic diseases of aging.”

“I find curriculum development very exciting. As a member of the curriculum committee, I enjoy prospectus development and constructing new teaching strategies that will help students become analytical thinkers and learners. Research and mentorship in my laboratory are also passions of mine. Overall, I find it rewarding to be part of a faculty who are committed to lifelong learning and who work to instill that ideal within the students.”

Named in honor of the “father of osteopathic medicine,” PCOM’s Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society recognizes those who have made gift provisions for the College in their estate plans. The simplest and most common planned gift is through a will or bequest; however, there are several estate plan vehicles. Each is as unique as the donor—often enabling donors to contribute more than they thought possible and to enjoy the satisfaction of giving while increasing their personal tax refund or reducing taxes they would otherwise owe come April 15. Charitable gift annuities, remainder trusts and lead trusts offer donors the added benefits of a life-income option and considerable flexibility to estate and tax planning. Naming PCOM as owner and beneficiary of a life insurance policy may be advantageous in carrying out the donor’s philanthropic and personal goals. The same can be said for designating the College as either a primary or contingent beneficiary of an IRA, 401 (k) or other retirement account. Donors will avoid significant income and estate tax liability. Becoming a Member If you have already made a planned gift provision for PCOM and have not yet notified the College, please consider letting us know so that we may include you as a member of the Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society. We would like to thank you for your meaningful gift and acknowledge your participation in publications. This may encourage others to review their estate plans and inspire individuals to make a lasting legacy for future generations at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic

Medicine. Andrew Taylor Still Legacy Society members are also invited to the annual reception of the President’s Leadership Circle. PCOM’s development staff is available to help donors find and, in cooperation with the appropriate advisors, construct the best plan for everyone concerned. To Learn More, Contact: Scott P. Righter Special Gifts Officer 4180 City Avenue Philadelphia, PA 19131-1695 215-871-6120/800-739-3939 scottr@pcom.edu

New Char itable IRA Law Br ings Opportunities This year, donors over the age of 701/2 may take advantage of a new opportunity to give through an IRA. The Pension Protection Act of 2006 permits donors to now give up to $100,000 from their IRAs without any income tax consequences. The rule only applies to traditional IRAs and Roth IRAs, and not to 401(k) plans or other types of compensation plans. However, donors with other qualified retirement plans may be able to roll them over to an IRA and use the IRA rollover to make a gift. The donor does not receive a charitable income tax deduction for the IRA rollover gift, but the distribution is not included in the donor’s income. An added bonus is that an IRA rollover by December 31, 2007, will qualify for all or part of the IRA owner’s required minimum distribution for 2007. This new law hopes to encourage charitable gifts to eligible institutions like PCOM.

Gift Clubs We thank our charter members who have generously provided for the future support of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine through planned giving. These benefactors recognize that PCOM’s commitment to quality education, patient care, scientific research and community service requires enduring support. Anonymous (6) J. Contributors Kelly Curtin, DO ’07 “As a recipient of a DO scholarship, I appreciate the importance of the annual DO Student Phonathon. The funds raised help alleviate the financial stress that most students feel, which, in turn, enables them to better focus on their studies. It was heartwarming to talk to so many alumni who wanted to help. They inspired me to contribute in the future, just as they gave to help us.”

Standard & Poor’s reaffirmed its “A” rating on PCOM’s Pennsylvania Higher Education Facilities Authority’s revenue bonds, series 2003, and improved its rating outlook from “stable” to “positive.” Georgia Campus – PCOM enrolled its third class of students in the DO program and its second class of students in the biomedical sciences program in August 2007. Operating as a division of PCOM, GA–PCOM has helped to create operational efficiencies to keep tuition costs lower for students in both locations. PCOM continues its strong relationship with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, receiving support via non-preferred appropriations.

President & Cabinet Florence D. Zeller, MPA, CFRE Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development “What excites me is learning about an institution, its goals and people, and then making a connection with audiences in the community who can help support those goals. PCOM is experiencing a tremendous period of growth and development, and I enjoy the challenge of keeping our alumni informed and connected. We are proud of our efforts to maintain PCOM’s venerable traditions while adding attributes that are strengthening our institution.”

50|

Passion in Practice | 2007 Annual Report

Matthew Schure, PhD President and Chief Executive Officer “At PCOM, all new endeavors and initiatives are built on a foundation of great strength. One key source of that strength is the incomparable sense of collegiality found here, which makes it a spectacular place to learn and work. The sense of underlying respect for every person —students, staff, faculty, administrators and alumni—and for their ideas and opinions enhances our interactions and our ability to make inspired decisions that will help PCOM continue to move forward.”

Kenneth J. Veit, DO ’76, MBA Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean

Robert G. Cuzzolino, EdD Vice President for Graduate Programs and Planning “I enjoy growth and change and the PCOM culture embraces this. Instead of asking ‘Why?’ we ask ‘Why not?’ My greatest satisfaction has come from the establishment of the graduate programs, which have enabled the College to expand and diversify in important ways. PCOM is fortunate to have a rare mix of extraordinarily creative, intellectual people who are willing to work incredibly hard to effect positive change.”

“It’s incredibly rewarding to see enthusiastic students walk into PCOM on their first day as anxious professionals-to-be and, through an intense formal and informal curriculum, walk out as confident graduates, well-prepared for their next years of training or practice. I enjoy being part of the whole interactive process, answering their focused questions, helping them cope with many challenges and mentoring them as they evolve into proud graduates of PCOM, graduates who serve so well their respective communities.”

Peter Doulis, CPA Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer “My goal is to provide strong financial results that will enable PCOM to carry out its mission of training highly competent, caring physicians, health practitioners and behavioral scientists. I am proud of PCOM’s financial strength and success over the past years. Working collaboratively with my PCOM colleagues, I proactively seek not only to sustain this success, but to improve each year and provide intergenerational equity for our students.”
