It’s as personal as personal gets… with a student-to-faculty ratio of just 14:1, your professors will know what you want out of life, and they’ll work every day to help you get there. It will introduce you to cutting-edge technology… as it has for our forestry students, who use sophisticated logging equipment, state-of-the-art computers, and optics as part of their active learning experience. It might take you around the world… like it did for eight students who spent two weeks camping and braving the wild in Siberia exploring issues surrounding ecotourism.
It will connect you with nature… as it does for students in Kirk Peterson’s Adirondacks 232 class, who help him rip through the Hudson River Gorge every spring on a 17-mile whitewater rafting trip.

At Paul Smith’s, our idea of green goes far beyond the thousands of acres of trees and landscape surrounding campus. It’s in our DNA. When it comes to environmental sustainability, we teach it. We practice it. We promote it. We live it. And a lot of the time it’s our students leading the way…
We recycled more than 24,500 pounds of paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, aluminum, and tin as part of the nationwide RecycleMania Tournament. We power virtually our entire campus by wind energy credits, one of the few colleges in the U.S. that can make that claim.
We removed more than 30 vending machines from our campus to conserve energy, and we instituted a no-Styrofoam policy.
We eliminated the use of trays in our cafeteria, saving more than 50,000 gallons of water.

It isn’t everyone who can live in a place surrounded by trees, snow, and wilderness. Just the lucky ones. We say that because it’s the way our people live and have fun that sets us apart. Every day at Paul Smith’s is a chance to do things you might never have imagined…
Extreme Extracurriculars… snowshoeing, Nordic skiing, rugby, the Eco Challenge, and canoeing in the “90-Miler” are just a few examples of how we take extracurriculars to the extreme. Inspiring Athletics… our Bobcats sports teams compete
in soccer, cross country, volleyball, Nordic skiing, and basketball; and our famed woodsmen’s team has a reputation for dominating at the national level.
Outdoor Adventures… it’s what we’re about, and includes alpine skiing, beach volleyball, rock and ice climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, snowboarding, and winter camping, among others.
Our woodsmen’s team isn’t the only group getting it done on the national level. The Paul Smith’s Nordic relay team recently finished third at the USCSA national championships in Colorado, and our snowshoe team has been victorious two years running at the International Snowshoe Championships.

Just ask student Maegen Dills, who had never even seen a lumberjack competition before coming to Paul Smith’s. That didn’t stop her from joining the woodsmen’s team and winning intercollegiate competitions.
Cutting Down the Competition When it comes to competitive lumberjacking, few schools can match Paul Smith’s. Our co-ed woodsmen’s team boasts the longest winning streak in the history of intercollegiate lumberjack sports. And team member Matt Bolton is the current national collegiate lumberjack champion.

Paul Smith’s was founded in 1946, built directly on the site of the once-famous Paul Smith’s Hotel. It was the first wilderness resort in the Adirondacks and a favorite destination for such dignitaries as President Grover Cleveland, President Theodore Roosevelt, and President Calvin Coolidge.
Students engage in an active learning environment, with an interdisciplinary core curriculum and undergraduate programs in forestry, natural resources, and recreation; hospitality, resort, and culinary management; and the sciences, liberal arts, and business.
Students
Paul Smith’s is a small private college with just over 1,000 undergraduate students from 20 states.
Paul Smith’s Bobcats compete in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA), with programs in soccer, cross country, volleyball, Nordic skiing, and basketball. Our nationally respected woodsmen’s team boasts the longest winning streak in the history of intercollegiate lumberjack sports.
In addition to the expansive living laboratory that surrounds campus, students gain hands-on experience at Paul Smith’s Ganzi Restaurant Training Center, the St. Regis Café, and the Statler Hospitality Center featuring seven full-service laboratory kitchens and a retail bakery. Outside the classroom, the Saunders Sports Complex features a recently renovated fitness center, two gyms, pool, and dance studio. And our three-story climbing wall is brand new, complete with an observation deck at the top.
Intramurals
There are intramural programs in flag football, inner tube water polo, soccer, softball, volleyball, basketball, Ultimate Frisbee, swimming, duathlons (run/bike/run), and tennis, and one-day events include the softball tournament, winter triathlon, multi-sport event, tennis tournament, fishing derby, three-on-three basketball, canoe racing, snowshoe softball, cross country ski racing, Eco-Challenge, and competitive swimming.

Club sports include Bike Club, Striders Club, Ski & Snowboard Club, Indoor Soccer Club, Woodsmen’s Club, Forestry Club, Fly Fishing Club, Hockey Club, PSC Canoe Team, Rock Climbing Club, Rugby Club, Whitewater Kayaking Club, and Emergency Wilderness Response Team (EWRT).
