Uncommon beauty: mother board canvases
I
t all started when an engine manufacturer was faced with the possibility of Y2K causing software issues and decided to update its computers. Knowing these computers would be sent to a recycler or end up in a landfill, Joyce Haughey had a different vision. “Why not use the mother boards as the canvas for floppy drive parts, memory, cabling, hard drive platters, semiconductors, and CPUs as the accents. It could all work together again without a power supply,” says Haughey. Haughey, aka CPU Artworks, of Trafalgar, IN, will display “computer technology – through the eyes of an artist”. “I hope that seeing what I’ve done with the discarded computers, can be a reminder of just how valuable every individual’s contribution was. Just as important, I am preserving the origins of the computers and not all of the outdated technology ended up being destroyed or dumped into a landfill. The Palo Alto Festival of the Arts, to me at least, is a way to bring it home,” says Haughey. Learn more at cpuartworks.net.

riginally from Germany and now residing in Salinas, Birgit KupkePeyla trained to be a goldsmith before moving to California: a profession then considered a trade with a strong artistic element. Her designs evolve from Birgit Kupke-Peyla modern German influence, deeply rooted in the European goldsmithing tradition - bold, clean with geometric elements. “In my work inspiration is born out of previous work where ideas build on each other. Since I started, I have been working in precious metals, mainly sterling silver and gold. My work is quiet yet dramatic. To this day the construction of jewelry, the concepts of fabrication and technical
challenges keep me interested in the medium. My work is nonrepresentational, my interest is in more architectural and sculptural forms. I am drawn to minimalistic ideas. Hoping that the pieces I create will stand the test of time, to adorn and be treasured by the wearer,” says Kupke-Peyla. Every sculpture tells a story

ou’ve heard the expression, “every picture tells a story,” well so does every piece sculpted by artist Ken Newman.

Originally a logger from Northern California, this self-taught artist uses his 40 years of experience to create representational sculptures in wood and bronze. “Sculpting in new mediums and subjects including the figure, gives me another opportunity to share a vision or story with those who love art. My art is a statement of my journey of life, an effort to understand the world. These sculptures question and interpret the relationships of man and nature and how each influences the other. Where Tasso Street ends the chalk begins
C
anvases have taken on a new meaning if you’re a street painter. In fact, this art form is created on the street’s pavement using chalk pastels and will only exist as temporary art throughout the weekend. The paintings on Tasso can be seen where the sidewalk ends and the chalk begins. More than sixty artists look beyond the ordinary to create something extraordinary. Presented by the Palo Alto Weekly, sponsorship proceeds will benefit local non-profit, Youth Community Service. Jolene Rose Russell is this year’s featured artist from Sacramento. Returning for her 7th year to create another memorable eye-catching image for all to see.
As a multimedia artist, her work can be seen throughout the Bay Area and hopes to have public murals in Sacramento and St. Paul, MN. Her many accomplishments involve various mediums, but she specializes mainly in large-scale images. However, when it comes to street painting, portraits are one of her favorite themes. “I love working with portraits, chalk is an excellent medium because they blend so well, and you can create lovely skin tones. I love making art outside surrounded by so many other artists. I appreciate that spectators not only enjoyed the work when it was finished, but where able to witness the process as it was happening,” says Russell. Continued on next page

Transitions and transformations
L
A-based artist, Stephen Schubert’s artwork embodies transitions and transformations which reflect in his bright contemporary pieces. His multi-dimensional abstracts evoke a great depth of color as he transforms elevated birch panels into magnificent paintings. His approach includes dragging a spackle knife, board or other found object over the wood surface then applying a topcoat of resin. “Dragging, spraying, Stephen Schubert dripping, smearing and scraping are all parts of the process. Varying amounts of pressure applied with my spackle knife enables me to create some control over the haphazard nature of my approach. I lay down up to 15 layers of paint and frequently finish with a resin topcoat. The end result is a vibrant, colorful painting,” says Schubert.

Getting wired!
M
ichael Gard’s figurative sculptures involve intricate wire-weaving techniques he invented as a teenager. “I was fooling around with steel wire thirty years ago at high school making a tiny sphere, then after ten years of experimentation this led to wire figure mobiles,” says Gard. Each figure begins from a sculpted block of clay and a spool of wire. The sculpture is reproduced in wax and individual lengths of wire are woven and knotted stitch-by-stitch around the wax form. Finally, the wax is melted away and leaves a rigid figure, both light and strong. The silhouette of a human figure emerges showing a freeflowing, graceful shape.
