Animal adventures

Farms, shelters provide hands-on interactions with livestock and pets

by Christine Lee and Linda Taaffe

T

he Midpeninsula’s agricultural heyday may be long gone, but that hasn’t prevented hundreds of local youth from spending their summers mucking out stables, milking cows and collecting eggs from chicken coops on local farms each year. The Palo Alto area is home to a handful of farms that host summer camps aimed at connecting youth to nature and their surrounding environment through hands-on interactions with the animals that live there. And for those who prefer to pamper and care for indoor pets in a more urban environment, now there’s a camp for that, too. The nonprofit Pets In Need is expanding its animal camp program into Palo Alto for the first time this summer, providing youth the opportunity to learn about animal care and training. Organizers from various camps said providing youth the opportunity to interact with animals is important in passing along a sense of responsibility and respect for nature’s creatures and their habitats to the next generation. Below is a list of some local camps that involve animals and nature.

environmental botanists. By the end of each session, she said, campers should be well-versed on how to properly leash, walk and groom an animal. Hollander said the most important goal of the camp is to teach the next generation how to responsibly care for animals so that maybe one day there won’t need to be shelters because every animal will have a home. “We give kids the tools on how to be successful pets owners and what they can do to help out in order to care for their pets,” she said. She said it’s been amazing to see the impact that the program has on both the kids and pets. “The kids get to see the whole process of how their work has paid off when a shy dog comes out of its shell,” Hollander said. Each weekly session operates from 10 a.m.to 3 p.m. weekdays. Summer sessions start in June. For more information, go to petsinneed. org/youth-programs.

And because campers are required to leave behind all electronic devices, the only sights and sounds they’ll experience are those at the preserve. During the one-week camp sessions, which run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m every day, campers ages 6 to 14 years old spend a portion of each day interacting (continued on page 8)

often brought offsite to children’s hospitals, assisted living facilities or homeless shelters to provide comfort and unconditional love to those who might be battling life-threatening illnesses or facing other life challenges. Animals don’t mind if you’re homeless, have lost your hair from cancer treatments, or if you have a disability, Kouk explained. Being in the company of animals has also proved beneficial to many of the volunteers, she said. “I always see so many smiles,” she said. The farm often becomes their “happy place,” she added. When not socializing the animals, the volunteer youth help with barn chores, such as scrubbing water buckets, painting tools and mucking out animal stalls. “We’re just trying to teach youth in the community that understanding of giving back and volunteering and helping people in need,” Houk said, “and at same time, what it means to take care of animals, and the gentleness and kindness animals can give.” The Youth Volunteer Program operates year-round and gives youth the opportunity to help out on the farm about twice a month.
