hen interior decorator Kim Wheeler of W Designs generously offered her Los Altos Hills home for this year’s Christmas at Our House home tour, she hadn’t quite realized the theme was “Spotlight on Green.” But the concepts of bringing the outdoors in

on holiday decor, participants will get an inside look at three private homes. Wheeler’s two-story Colonial features more than 5,500 square feet on a little more than an acre, in the Pink House Ranch section of town. The family has lived in the house, circa about 1970, for the past four years. Crossing the marblefloored foyer, the tour begins with the living room, where Wheeler sprayed magnolialeaf garlands with gold paint and draped them gracefully across the fireplace mantel, as well as a cabinet behind the sofa. Gold-sprayed blossoms are tucked in discreetly, with gold and white stockings dangling above the fireplace. “I was looking for a more natural look” in the living room, Wheeler said, pointing to the gold, rusts and greenery. A big fan of toile — woven fabrics that depict a scene against a plain background — Wheeler has incorporated some version in nearly every room of the house. The birdpatterned toile wallpaper in the dining room became the jumping off point for holiday decor: from the red bird in a nest to the bird-cage topiary, napkins with birds and the berries wound through the chandelier — bird food. The kitchen is done in all blues and silver, including silver-painted pinecones on mini-wreaths dangling from the backs of chairs. Beyond the kitchen is what Wheeler calls the “bonus room,” a place for her four children to hang out. Here a fake Christmas tree — borrowed from a friend — boasts huge peppermint lollipops, bringing out the dominant red color in the room. The win-

dow coverings? Red-checked cloth contrasted with a pastoral, richly colored toile. But toile isn’t Wheeler’s only design motif: She’s very fond of leopard prints (on throw pillows, on an upholstered stool, in the runner up the staircase, even in her shoes), as well as crystal chandeliers and Aubusson rugs (flat-woven like tapestries). And she likes to incorporate unusual furniture, some antique, some reproduction. Her current favorite is a desk with lion-head pulls and brass paws, located in a perfect spot in the family room. Instead of built-in cabinets in the bathrooms, Wheeler chose free-standing vanities,

mostly with legs. In the master bathroom, there’s a pair. Tucked in a cabinet in the family room are more than a dozen porcelain Santas, poured and glazed by Wheeler’s mother and gifted each year to her children. “Every room has its own character, but there is a homogeneous look,” Wheeler said, contrasting the girls’ bedroom with its cranberry toile bedskirt and green-and-white polka-dotted window seat to the younger boy’s room with its dog theme and the older son’s blue wall and blue-andwhite checked drapes. In the master bedroom, a pair of toile-upholstered chairs sit before the fireplace, and pillows — yes, in leopard,

two kinds of checks and floral — are mounded on the fourposter bed. A petit armoire with a distressed French gray finish stands nearby. For Wheeler, toile will never go out of style. “I think toile is timeless. It’s French,” she said, looking around her traditional yet eclectic home. Other homes on the tour

The event also features entertainment by St. Francis student musicians, complimentary tea with homemade cookies (served at Wheeler’s home), a gift boutique (including topiaries, wreaths and other garden items), a drawing for a “green” Christmas tree and eco-chic jewelry, and a luncheon. The fundraiser is a labor of love for more than 600 volunteers each year, who have raised more than $600,000 over the past four years alone.
