A

lthough the last 12 months since Cape Town Pride 2020 have been interesting and trying in all aspects of our community. Many members of our community have lost their jobs, queer bars and venues have had to close and morale, in general, has been low. But we have not let that get us down. We have learned new skills and new ways of navigating the Pride landscape. So when people ask what we have been up to in the last 12 months, we can confidently say that we have been representing our community all over the World. Cape Town Pride has been involved in: United Prides of Africa, Global Pride and food drives. The Team at Cape Town Pride hasn't stopped working. We are learning to navigate the ever-changing Government Protocols around COVID-19 to make sure that whatever we do is safe and socially responsible. This year we are doing smaller events to make sure that various stakeholders have as much visibility as possible. We are looking at pre-packaging and live-streaming where we can to make sure that folks can still participate and get the visibility. The one thing that we are super proud of is the idea of a Virtual Parade where all the various stakeholders can represent themselves. We have also highlighted the Nkoli House Project as the project that Cape Town Pride is going to be supporting and raising funds for this year. We know that it is a terrible year for fundraising but every single cent counts these days. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for all the various events that will be happening. Join in where you can. Donate where you can. Be the authentic you because - #YOUMATTER

CAPE TOWN PRIDE MOVIE FESTIVAL 2021

T

his year, during Pride month, we will be screening two classic "gay" mainstream movies, both of which have just celebrated their 25th anniversary.

The first screening which will happen on the 20th March will be the fun, light-hearted, iconic To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar. The film tells the story of three New York City drag queens who embark on a road trip. After tying for the win in New York City's "Drag Queen of the Year" contest, Noxeema Jackson (Wesley Snipes) and Vida Boheme (Patrick Swayze)win a trip to Hollywood to take part in the even bigger "Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant". Before they depart, Vida persuades Noxeema to take along the inexperienced "drag princess" Chi-Chi Rodriguez (John Leguizamo) as their protégé. They set off for Los Angeles, carrying with them an iconic autographed photo of Julie Newmar (signed "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar") that Vida took from a restaurant wall. What follows is a fabulous romp through small-town America ... The film is similar to the earlier Australian comedy-drama The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, also about three drag queens who travel cross-country in a vehicle that breaks down, stranding them in a small backwater town where they manage to win the locals over. The movie is great viewing and for those of you in

26

the community too young to have even heard of it and for those who were around at the premier, the film is a classic, delightful romp, filled with clichés and stereotypes, which certainly don't offend my sensibilities. Above all it is a movie which deserves your attention, and you will enjoy the experience promise! There will be prizes for the most outrageous outfit so come prepatred to be entertained!

T

he second night 21st March, will be the screening of Philadelphia, a film that won Academy Awards and was the fist mainstream movie to deal with the taboo subject of HIV AIDS. Performances from Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington are superb in this gripping drama which tells the story of a young lawyer who is fired from his job because of his illness, and who takes on his firm in a civil action. Both movie nights will take place at the Rooftop on Bree. A fabulous venue with views over the City of Cape Town. The venue has opening sides and roof enabling an indoor/ourtdoor vibe and allowing for social distancing. There will also be a full bar. Under current Covid restrictions numbers are limited so book early to avoid disappointment. Before the feature films there will be screenings of 2 short

Swedish films. So book for both screenings and get a R40 discount. If you can't get to both, the ticket price is R80, enjoy a welcome drink, join in the spirit of Pride, soak up the atmosphere of a venue overlooking the city and enjoy the experience of watching a classic "gay" film. 28

LATHEEM GABRIEL Latheem is a singer/songwriter who comes from a talented creative family. His grandfather sang on radio, and both his parents were musical. However, despite this he was encouraged to "get a real job" rather than take up music as a career - music should rater be a sideline, thought he parents. Latheem, however, thought differently, knowing that music was the core of his being and embarked on a musical career which is grows year by year. After school he got involved in charity work and activism, joining The Inner Circle where he co-directed and wrote the documentary Fitrah which focused on issue faced by queer Muslims. One feather in his cap is that he shared the stage with the famous Nakhane performing at the invitation of the Mayor of Stockholm, Sweden. He also appeared on the United Prides of Africa on-line event earlier this year, which was viewed by over a million people worldwide. Performing alternative music, with his musical inspiration being his own life experiences. Human rights activism and the changing social and political landscape in South Africa, Latheem is sure to never run out of material. Always a keen supporter of Cape Town PRIDE and LGBTI+ causes, issues and events, it’s a pleasure to have this enormously talented musician back at Pride again!!

PRIDE AT MICROSOFT Being inclusive is not something we simply do, but rather, it stands for who we are. Building a business culture that embraces diversity and inclusion is not only morally right, it is critical for an organisation’s ability to innovate and adapt in a fast-changing world. Diverse teams often outperform counterparts comprising of “just” highly gifted/talented people. They remove product bias, allow for different thinking and approaches to solving problems and, in the technology sector, diversity and inclusion serves as a catalyst for success and a foundation for innovation. In a diverse working group: everyone’s perspective allows them to tackle challenges differently and they rely on each other’s’ differing points of views to progress. Microsoft, through initiatives such as Women@Microsoft, GLEAM (Global LGBTQ+ Employees and Allies at Microsoft) and our focus on accessibility, is striving to remain relevant in this broader context. By embracing diverse working groups, we have been able to innovate when it comes to emerging technologies, which are impacting society. At Microsoft, we are committed to ensuring that we include everyone, innovate boldly, and bring our big ideas and curiosity to work every day. With initiatives like GLEAM, we strive to create a supportive employee environment at Microsoft, encouraging other companies to follow suit. Every year, GLEAM has a Pride presence in various locations around the globe celebrating workplace diversity. We at GLEAM are honoured to be supporting Cape Town Pride 2020 and their mission to provide a platform to continue the fight for equality, while also celebrating LGBTQ+ life. Microsoft proudly celebrates diversity and how far we have come in the fight for equality, however there is still opportunity to improve – both in our business and in our society. We know this is a journey that requires constant self-assessment and recommitment, and that together we can shape a workplace that represents 35 everyone.

PRIDE MATTERS Words: Cary Gee

For LGBT+ community – many of us have now achieved most of the rights we have fought for. So is there a need for pride anymore? This writer thinks there is…

T

ravelling home from central Landon on the Tube, late one night, I found myself in a carriage, deserted but for two couples. One young, one old. The older couple held hands and snored gently, letting their theatre programmes fall to the floor, while the one half of the younger couple rested her head on her boyfriend’s shoulder while he whispered things in her ear that made her smile. Utterly unremarkable, and yet, had either of these couples been of the same sex, the very ordinariness of the tableau they presented would have elicited some kind of response from the ethnically mixed, gender balanced group of teenagers that boarded at the next station. At best, I’d like to think the teenagers would’ve delighted in the fact that they were growing up in the world’s most diverse capital city. At worst they might have violently abused the couples sharing their space, forgetting for a moment, that when 200 Gay Liberation Front pioneers first marched from Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square more than 40 years ago when London was a very different place. A place where white, black and Asian youths could not mix freely without being subjected to some levels of abuse still suffered by gay people today. As for the girls in the group, well they wouldn’t’ have been allowed out at all! People did not just wake up one morning and decide that regardless of the colour of your skin, or whether or not you had a penis, you were entitled to some freedoms, opportunities and dignities as everyone else. NO! These human rights were fought for. People paid with their liberty, some paid with their lives, and in many parts of the world they are still paying! So, for those gays who would rather spend an afternoon shopping for their same-sex wedding than join in their local Pride celebration, march for those who are unable to march. Celebrate the rights that we have already won and take Pride in defending them. Remember, these rights can be taken away as easily as they were granted. It is up the entire LGBT+ community to ensure that it never happens.

38

Feminism would never have succeeded without the support of men, racial equality would be non-existent without the support of whites and blacks wanting to work together, and gay equality will never be achieved without our heterosexual allies. Pride is a time for gays and straights to walk together, arm-in-arm to express solidarity, strength and love. Essentially Pride is what makes us human, when all too often a heterosexual public discourse dehumanises those whom it ignores or denigrates. Gay Pride matters to school children, gay and straight, who are subjected to homophobic bullying. It matters to the families and friends of the disproportionately high numbers of gay, lesbian and transgender suicides. It matters to gays from countries as diverse as Uganda, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iran which share only a desire to punish a genetically determined minority. It should matter to you! “But why march? Why ram it down our throats? Can’t you celebrate quietly at home with your queer friends?” we have all been asked. Afterall “Straight people don’t have Straight Pride.” Except of course they do. 365 days of the year, 366 this year! Spend a night out in any town centre, any day of the week, and you will see girls with full make-up, high-heels and little else snogging the face off a young man who resembles a gay from 20 years ago, his best jeans, shirt and hair all ironed to within an ‘nth of its life. What exactly are they exhibiting, without silence or shame, if not Pride?

THE NKOLI HOUSE PROJECT

Cape Town Pride & United Prides of Africa are busy with plans for the Nkoli House Project

T

he Nkoli House project is being launched at Pride 2021 Plus. The project envisages a large building which will be a community centre and safe space for elderly LGBTI+ people.

Both the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Provincial Administration have expressed their support for the project and hopefully will be able to sponsor the building in which the centre will be housed.

There are currently no facilities where the elderly LGBTI+ people in our community to live. At the moment, these people have to stay in retirement villages, where the majority of other residents are not from our community. Many are forced to retreat back in to the closet. Where there are functions and events these are not tailored to their likes and needs and we want to rectify this situation with the establishment of a place where they can stay, mix with like minded people and where entertainment or outings are planned, they will be done with LGBTI people in mind.

Several buildings have been ear-marked and negotiations with the City are currently underway. Of course which ever property is finally approved it will need renovation and funding, hence the appeal for financial assistance.

The facility will be one where residents will pay for their accommodation but will have staff and activities geared to suiting the likes and needs of LGBTI people. They will be provided with a dining area where they will get healthy meals. A community area where they can enjoy a drink, mix with other LGBTI's and entertainment planned with trhem in mind.

This centre will be a first for the continent of Africa and in fact very few such places exist in the world, but we all grow old and no one wants to live out their twilight years in loneliness.

46

Some of the people in our community have already expressed their support in kind, such as electricians, designers and gardeners, but it will take support from the wider community to buy the necessary tiles, doors, fittings and fixtures, so it is to this end that we are making the appeal.

So get community spirited and dig deep in your pockets to get this project off the ground - after all one day you may need a safe place to stay when you're past your prime!

SIMON NKOLI

The Nkoli House Project is named after Simon Nkoli ... but who was this South African icon

S

imon Nkoli was born in Soweto on the 26th November 1957 and grew up on a farm in the Free State. Nkoli became a youth activist against apartheid, with the Congress of South African Students (COSAS) and with the United Democratic Front. 1984 he was arrested and faced the death penalty for treason with twenty-one other political leaders in the Delmas Treason Trial. It was whilst he was in prison that Simon came out helping to change the attitude of fellow ANC inmates and thereby the African National Congress's attitude to gay rights. He was acquitted and released from prison in 1988. He founded the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW) in 1988. Along with LGBT activist, Beverley Palesa Ditsie and fellow members of the mainly white Gay Association of South Africa, he organised the first pride parade in South Africa held in Hillbrow in 1990. In 1994, he was one of the first gay activists to meet with President Nelson Mandela and was instrmental in the campaign for the inclusion of protection of gay rights in the Bill of Rights in the 1994 South African constitution as well as the repeal of the sodomy law, which happened in May 1998 in his last months. As one of the first publicly HIV-positive African gay men, he initiated the Positive African Men group and campaigned for AIDS funding and treatment. He traveled widely and was given several human rights awards in Europe and North America. He was a member of International Lesbian and Gay Association board, representing the African region. There is a Simon Nkoli Day in San Francisco. He opened the first Gay Games in New York and was made a freeman of that city by mayor David Dinkins. In 1996 Nkoli was given the Stonewall Award in the Royal Albert Hall in London. He is recognised here in South Africa for his untiring work for the promotion of equality for LGBTI+ people in the country.

48

He succumbed to HIV AIDS in 1998 but his activism helped get the rights we all enjoy today, so it is in his honour that the community centre has been named. Simon is one of those remarkable people who not only took on the apartheid government but belived in his right as a citizen to have the same freedoms enjoyed by the rest of the population - a brave, dedicated individual, who in his short life made a huge difference.

Welcome to The City of Cape Town's annual

Message from the DA Metro LGBTQI Chairman The Democratic Alliance would like to wish all locals and visitors a warm welcome to the City of Cape Town’s annual Pride Festival. The DA has a proud and long association spanning more than a decade with this event and historically have been the only political party to take part in a meaningful and committed manner. Pride speaks to many of our party’s core values, and this expression of freedom, equality, inclusivity and diversity resonates deeply with who we are and what we stand for in the DA. We are the first to admit that society still has a very long way to go in the real and lived acknowledgement of LGBTQIA+ rights and fair treatment, and we are committed to walking that walk together with all queer communities. Gay rights are human rights, and we as the DA will stand by those rights for you and with you. In the City of Cape Town and Western Cape where we govern, health and law enforcement agencies are sensitized to LGBTQIA+ issues and health services provide free PREP to M2M and sex workers at our clinics and hospitals. Research also shows that LGBTQI residents of our City and Province feel safer here with our governments than in other parts of the country. This speaks to our commitment to a safer, more caring society where we govern. The festival which this year takes place over two weeks will cover many of the more poignant and burning aspects of queer life in Cape Town, and will culminate in the well loved and supported Pride Parade and Festival. The festival is an opportunity to celebrate how far we as LGBTQIA+ persons from across many societies, cultures and racial groups have come, and gives us the opportunity to be present along with our straight allies without fear. The DA Metro Region of Cape Town wishes you all a fun, safe and meaningful Pride 2020.

Councillor Roberto Quintas

Chairman: DA Metro LGBTQIA+ Committee

CELEBRATING PRIDE

It is a day of fun, celebration, politics and above all the best party of the year, but there are a number of do's and of course the DONT's!

T

he culture of the LGBTI+ community, especially at Pride, is one of unapologetic otherness. It is a day where our diverse community expresses their uniqueness outwardly, which to some onlookers and allies can be quite jarring. From outrageous drag queens with big hair and even bigger stilettos to hunky men sporting not much more than glitter and same gender affection and love openly displayed.

above all be respectful, don’t gawk or judge, get into the spirit of the day and have fun.

The Pride movement began as a protest - in the United States it was spearheaded by the Stonewall Riots, here in South Africa, emboldened by the movement overseas, we took to the streets in the late 1980’s in a protest for social equality.

There is generally alcohol flowing … with this ion mind DON’T drink and drive! You do not want to end your day in a jail cell. That’s a big downer – HUGE! Uber is a Pride sponsor so use them!

As with any large event there are a number of DO's and DON’T’s ... Remember that core of Pride is acceptance, even so acquaint yourself with correct terminology, certain words which may have been quite fine to use a few years ago are now a no, no – do not refer to drag queens as trannies for example, its not PC. However, there are other words that were previously considered a slur which the community has reclaimed like “queer”. And

50

Invite your friends to join you, Pride is for everyone. If its your first time at Pride, it may seem a bit daunting especially for straight friends and family who may find the outrageousness and over-exuberant behaviour of some revellers a bit in-your face.

Pride brings such a rich and diverse crowd together. DON'T be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and meet someone new! Who knows, they may end up becoming a great friend, a lover … or a one-night stand! But remember DO stay safe and practice safe sex. Sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise and awareness of the dangers of unprotected sex are very real. The weather at Cape Town Pride is generally extremely hot. The event is outside, so it is important to be prepared with sunscreen and DO stay hydrated! - keep a bottle of water with you,

Glamazon helps make Amazon a great place to work by educating and informing employees about Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and/or Queer (LGBTQ) issues, events, meetings and information. The group mentors employees (LGBTQ and allies) and promotes diversity and visibility in recruiting and throughout Amazon. The group sponsors events and PRIDE parades around the globe. Glamazon supported the creation of a Transgender Toolkit for managers and employees to use when going through a gender transition in the workplace. In 2019, thanks to the efforts of Glamazon working with leaders across the company, we were honored again to receive a 100 Score on the HRC Corporate Equality Index, a US benchmarking tool on corporate policies and practices pertinent to LGBTQ employees.

make it through the fun of the day. There are lots of food stalls at the event so DON’T say no to all that amazing food? DON’T break the law. This may seem like a no brainer, but on big events the cops are out - especially regarding drinking alcohol in public, public dress, noise, and curfews. Do your research and you’ll be having loads of lawful fun in no time.

remember alcohol is dehydrating. If you are drinking alcohol DON'T overdo it! If you’re planning on getting lucky, DO it safely! DO Take loads of photo’s. They are the best way to capture memories you can revisit for years to come and of course you can show your Pride on social media with hashtags and shares. During Pride, the drinks are flowing, the night goes on late, sleep is minimum, and the emotions are high. It is easy to get caught up in unnecessary, petty drama – and there is always a drama! DON'T get involved - remember why you’re celebrating (or protesting). Getting involved in someone else’s issues is just not worth the trouble. Especially if you are going to be drinking it is important that you eat. Even if you’ve probably been working on that “Pride body” for months now, you’ll need your strength if you’re going to

52

DO be yourself. This the one day that you can. Let your inner self, your true self or your fantasy self can come out of the closet. Pride is the perfect time to shake off any self-consciousness and try something new. DON’T feed the hate. As much as the LGBTI+ community fights against hate, we often have to face hate from those within the community, too. Whether it is body shaming, ageism, transphobia — Pride has no room for hate. Stay positive, loving, accepting — and don’t support or feed the haters. Pride is about celebrating diversity, fighting for equality and being proud of who you are. We must never forget that, while we’ve come a long way, we still have a fight ahead of us, a fight to preserve the rights we have won and a fight for the rights of those within the broader LGBTI+ community who are still sidelined and discriminated against, think trans rights for example where these people experience discrimination within our own community. Most importantly, DO make the most out of your time at Pride!

VOLUNTEER WITH PRIDE

Cape Town Pride doesn't happen without the fabulous effort from our community who volunteer

C team.

ape Town Pride is run entirely by volunteers. Some of us work on short-term projects or campaigns – and some of us work all year round as part of the core team. Taking part is an incredible experience and we’d love you to join the

Cape Town Pride is wholly run by a group of volunteers who are passionate about equality and diversity. We are a not-for-profit organisation, and any surplus funds we raise are used to support the LGBTQ+ community and improve the events. Together, we run the South Africa’s biggest, most diverse pride, and our job is to make sure we provide a platform for every part of Cape Town’s LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, questioning, intersex, non-binary, asexual, polysexual, genderqueer and gender variant people) to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing.

64

From Pink Party, which helps to raise funds for the events for the Pride week, to our annual Parade through the heart of the Cape Town and the amazing 1 week, city-wide festival that precedes Pride weekend, everything we do is designed to give LGBTQ+ people a platform to be visible and speak loudly to the rest of the city about what we have achieved, how far we have come and what is still needed. Cape Town Pride includes people of every race and faith, whether disabled or able-bodied, and all sexualities and genders including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer, questioning, intersex, trans*, genderqueer, gender variant or non-binary as well as straight and cis allies. Around 15 people volunteer year-round to help us deliver what has become a world-class Pride. We are already a pretty diverse bunch, but we are looking to add to our diversity. So if Pride is for you, then climb on board for the wild ride that is Cape Town Pride!

All events operate under strict Covid-19 protocols

Cape Town Pride 2021+ brings you more than 18 super events during March Pride Month Many Cape Town Pride standards such as, The Mr & Miss Cape Town Pride, the poetry evening, book nights and the Diva’s Extravaganza will be happening but with limited seats available so early booking is essential to avoid disappointment The Nkoli House Project will be launched during Pride month and once again the City of Cape Town will be showing their support by lighting up buildings in the rainbow colours

We will get through this together!!
