LETTER FROM PRIDE

W

elcome to Cape Town Pride 2019 … Although there have been numerous pride events in Cape Town for many years now, in fact this is the 15th year, the Outreach Africa Cape Town Pride team has only been running Pride for 3 years – making this our 4th birthday!!! Our mission is clear and unambiguous: it is to provide a platform for every part of the City’s LGBTI+ community, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer, intersex, non-binary, asexual, polysexual, genderqueer and gender variant people and friends & families (phew!!!) – hope that covers you all… and to assist in raising awareness of LGBTI+ issues and to help with campaigns to allow these people to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing and assist in making our diverse community visible. And the Cape Town Pride Festival, covering 2 weeks of events and workshops is doing exactly that. Our ambition to is make Cape Town Pride not only the largest Pride on the African continent but to make it one of the World’s notable pride events … as New York’s, London’s, Sydney and Sao Paulo Pride have all become. The City of Cape Town have already acknowledged, by their enthusiastic support each year, the important contribution the LGBTI+ community makes to the city … Cape Town is, after all, promoted by the IGTLA (International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association) as one of the best gay-friendly destinations in the world. Over the past 3 years we have seen the Pride Mardi Gras grow, so much so that the event had to move from the street party in De Waterkant to Reddam Field in order to accommodate the larger numbers… The March has also grown each year and this

2

year there are more participants, as well as marching-bands, "tromp-poppies" and floats than ever before. In fact the City of Cape Town are opening up the “fan walk” in recognition that the event is large enough to warrant it. Whilst Pride IS a celebration of everything that we as the LGBTI+ community have achieved, the fight for equality and rights for those who are disadvantaged by their differences is far from over. We still need to deal with various types and levels of homophobia which pervades all sections of society, including our own LGBTI+ community. Youngsters are still being ostracised and bullied for being gay, so-called corrective rape, that most violent crime against our lesbian sisters is still being carried out, transphobia is alive, bringing fear and misery to a group of people whose only crime is to be different. The alienation of older LGBTI+ people because they don’t fit into a stereo-typed gay youth driven society. All these issues and more still need to be tackled with education and awareness and at Cape Town Pride 2019 we have adopted some of these causes meaning that Pride can change lives for the better. In light of this we will be increasing the number of organisations who will receive a donation this year. Finally, without the support of the City of Cape Town and all the many sponsors as well as the wonderful LGBTI+ community in Cape Town, events like Gay Pride would not be possible, so a huge thank you to everyone involved – including artists and entertainers, bar-persons, cleaners, volunteers, marshals, officials, the South African Police, the WCLA and everyone who has contributed to making Cape Town Pride 2019 such a success

JOIN THE MARCH

The Pride March is the highlight of Pride Week and this year the march will be bigger and better than ever before .... we have more floats taking part, and more marchers as well ... there are even floats from the City of Cape Town’s Carnival collection and to add to the celebratory atmosphere we have original Cape Town minstrel bands and a Scottish Pipers... So hold on to your hats the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transgenders, intersex, curious and questioning are coming... But why a march you might ask... In 1970, the first gay pride event, called the Christopher Street Liberation Day March, was organised to commemorate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York - 50 YEARS AGO!, The Gay Pride March was born... Over the years, though, parades (or more correctly) marches, have evolved into pure celebrations, putting the LGBT+ community on cheerful, proud display... This year’s Pride March will form up at Prestwich Street School and Alfred Street in De Waterkant. At 12:00 (noon) the parade will leave, headed by the formidable “Dykes on Bikes” - and will proceed along Prestwich Street, left into Ebenezer Street and right into Somerset Road .... it will then proceed along the Somerset Road “fan walk” through Green Point to York Road where it will turn right to the circle. Left into Helen Suzman Boulevard, right in to Peter’s Road finally ending at Reddam Field car park ... where the Pride Mardi Gras is set to blow you, your big hair, your highest heels, campest garb right off the planet!!!. Wear sensible heels listen to the marshals and follow instructions. Don’t drink alcohol in the Parade, there’s lots of time for that later ... and it’s not allowed (duh!). Be glamorous, be colourful, be daring , behave, but most of all be yourself!!!

MARDI GRAS

The PARTY starts at 13:00 at REDDAM FIELD where it goes on till 8pm ... This year there is an astounding line-up of artists and performers including Craig Lucas, Jimmy Nevis, Zoe Zana, Latheem Gabriel, Manila von Teez, 3D, 4 Tons of Fun, Trolley Dollies and the Internationally fabulous Ceri Dupree. There are Dj's, bars, stalls, food and a family area, all of which will combine to make YOUR Pride day the biggest, best Gay Day EVER ....

From 1-o’clock (lunchtime) till 8:30 in the evening there will be non-stop entertainment. On stage you will see some old, familiar favourites but we also have a few new surprises too. There are people you saw last year who are back because we all love them, and others who love us, and by that I mean YOU, so much so - they begged to perform again... have an awesome PRIDE 2019!!!

THE PERFORMERS CRAIG LUCAS

Hold on to your hats ... and be prepared to be blown right out of your high heels, CRAIG LUCAS will be one of the headliners on the Pride stage this year. Craig who blew the judges away at his blind audition was the winner of The Voice (S2), Craig has been writing and performing amazing music with his songs being played on the country's main radio stations daily. This hugely talented singer/song-writer also happens to be openly gay and hails from Cape Town! Craig who has always loved singing made a promise to his mother that he would finish his degree first, before embarking on his singing career. He studied politics, philosophy and economics at UCT before doing his Honours in finance. His coach, Kahn Morbee describes him as the love child of Freddy Mercury and John Legend. Such is the respect that he has for this young man's talent. Craig is a self-confessed foodie ... and admits that he will eat pretty-much anything, but prefers his food on the spicy side, the hotter the better. In fact he says he has actually been sick from eating food that is too spicy ... admitting that it's an addiction. And talking about hot ... Craig is one of the hottest new talents around, making in roads in the music industry. He admits to a few downsides like the fact that he’s a horrible driver, having failed his driver’s test five times! Craig Lucas, told the world that he is a gay man in an open letter on social media to his family, friends and fans, endearing himself even more to his LGBTI+ fans ... he's one of us!!! and we're proud of him, his courage, his humanity, love and above all his music!!!!

16

JIMMY NEVIS

Also headlining on the Pride stage this year is the popular, singing-sensation JIMMY NEVIS. Jimmy needs no introduction to South African audiences, and hailing from the Mother City, he is one of our favourite sons. Described as an alternative pop singer, songwriter, producer and entrepreneur and philanthropist. Raised in a musical home environment, leading the choir at his local church, but with a dream of becoming a professional musician. After completing his matric he went in to Social Studies, but music was his passion and at the tender age of 19 wrote his first single which he took to radio stations pleading with them to give it some airtime and what-doyou-know, his talent was recognised and to date the singer has 3 studio albums under his belt as well as a whole list of nominations for a number of music awards such as SAMA Kia Record of The Year, Wawela Awards - Best Male Artist & Composer, and a Channel O African Music Video Award. Best known for his chart-topping singles, "Elephant Shoes," "Heartboxing," (The music video for "Heartboxing" reached the #1 spot on the Trace Urban African Chart in early 2013), "In Love With You" and "Balloon" Jimmy is no stranger to the local music scene.

philanthropic initiative that hopes to inspire and create change among the youth of Cape Town, with a focus on creating opportunities that encourage the youth to dream beyond the means of their socio-economic backgrounds. Jimmy also launched a clothing and accessory line, York Yard - the name was inspired by his youth when as a child, he spent countless hours in his backyard - a space which allowed him to freely express what he now regards as his calling in life. His backyard became ‘Madison Square Garden’ in New York City as he would sing daily for his family and neighbours. With a string of hits to his name already, Jimmy Nevis is set to get the crowd in a party mood just by walking on stage ... and OMG he is just soooo good looking!

Jimmy has also had the opportunity to work and collaborate with some of the best musicians and producers South Africa has to offer, including MiCasa, Pascal & Pearce, Kwesta and Sketchy Bongo. He opened for international stars Tevin Campbell and Pharrell Williams, and in November 2017 performed his first solo concert at the GrandWest Arena in Cape Town - proof positive that this young man is flying high and climbing the ladder of success. But it is not only music that he loves, he's a man with heart and in 2015 he joined forces with Cassidy Emmanuel and founded a

LATHEEM GABRIEL Another local boy who needs no introduction, having performed at Pride last year and the year before is LATHEEM GABRIEL. Latheem is a singer/songwriter who comes from a talented creative family. His grandfather sang on radio, and both his parents were musical. However, despite this he was encouraged to "get a real job" rather than take up music as a career - music should rater be a sideline, thought he parents. Latheem, however, thought differently, knowing that music was the core of his being and embarked on a musical career which is grows year by year. After school he got involved in charity work and activism, joining The Inner Circle where he co-directed and wrote the documentary Fitrah which focused on issue faced by queer Muslims. One feather in his cap is that he shared the stage with the famous Nakhane performing at the invitation of the Mayor of Stockholm, Sweden. Performing alternative music, with his musical inspiration being his own life experiences. Human rights activism and the changing social and political landscape in South Africa, Latheem is sure to never run out of material. Always a keen supporter of PRIDE and LGBTI+ causes, issues and events it’s a pleasure to have this enormously talented musician back at Pride again!!

PRIDE AT MICROSOFT

eing inclusive is not something we simply do, but rather, it stands for who we are.

Building a business culture that embraces diversity and inclusion is not only morally right, it is critical for an organisation’s ability to innovate and adapt in a fast-changing world. Diverse teams often outperform counterparts comprising of “just” highly gifted/talented people. They remove product bias, allow for different thinking and approaches to solving problems and, in the technology sector, diversity and inclusion serves as a catalyst for success and a foundation for innovation. In a diverse working group: everyone’s perspective allows them to tackle challenges differently and they rely on each other’s’ differing points of views to progress.

innovate boldly, and bring our big ideas and curiosity to work every day. With initiatives like GLEAM, we strive to create a supportive employee environment at Microsoft, encouraging other companies to follow suit. Every year, GLEAM has a Pride presence in various locations around the globe celebrating workplace diversity. We at GLEAM are honoured to be supporting Cape Town Pride 2019 and their mission to provide a platform to continue the fight for equality, while also celebrating LGBTQ+ life. Microsoft proudly celebrates diversity and how far we have come in the fight for equality, however there is still opportunity to improve – both in our business and in our society. We know this is a journey that requires constant self-assessment and recommitment, and that together we can shape a workplace that represents everyone.

Microsoft, through initiatives such as Women@Microsoft, GLEAM (Global LGBTQ+ Employees and Allies at Microsoft) and our focus on accessibility, is striving to remain relevant in this broader context. By embracing diverse working groups, we have been able to innovate when it comes to emerging technologies, which are impacting society. At Microsoft, we are committed to ensuring that we include everyone,

21

CERI DUPREE Last but not least is the internationally known CERI DUPREE. Hailing all the way from the UK, Ceri is no stranger to Cape Town, having performed in the city many times. Always brought-back by popular demand, her show is thrilling for South African audiences starved of professional drag where the artist actually uses his own voice, no lip-syncing here. Ceri's performance entails a host of costume changes on the stage ... and that classic "gay-humour" our community is famous for. Ceri believes that the show is all about the illusion, perfected by fabulous costumes, wigs and the mystery. As to whether her brand of female impersonation will ever fade, Ceri said "I'd like to say no but ... with all the social network these days and everything is so out there and open. You see pics of performers doing their make-up without clothes on ... half made up, all the backstage tricks laid bare, giving away tips and trade secrets, so there's no illusion ... the magic and the mystery are gone ... so then there's no interest and it'll fade and die ... ". But for Capetonian's, Ceri is alive and well and with her special brand of humour and a show that is so slick and professional you are in for a treat. Frocked up and fabulous, Ceri is what glamour is all about this is drag at its best ... be prepared to be blown away, be prepared for a night of laughter, if you haven't seen her show, book now, if you have I bet you are going again ... she is fabulous!

THE TROLLEY DOLLIES For the first time on the Pride stage we welcome the popular TROLLIE DOLLIES with their over-the-top wigs, outrageous somewhat blue humour, in an act filled with innuendo, they will most surely have the crowd cringing, laughing and enjoying the zany new show "Non-Specific". Headlined by the ever-fabulous Cathy Specific who is larger than life, immaculately made up and has a sharp, quick wit. Appearing along side her are Molly and Holly. The resident act at Gate 69, they have had a number of successful shows under their seat-belts, dressed in high heels with massive wigs and representing the archetypical air hostess of the 1980s, but played by 6ft men in drag, brace yourself for a night of laughter. Gate 69 is a dinner "cabaret" venue ... The food they serve is very tasty and ample with a nice selection to choose from a platter of cheeses, olives, patĂŠs and meats ... and there's no shortage of drinks from the bar. These three "girls" will have you cheering for more after you enjoy a sampling of their act...

LGBT+ THE MOST UNIVERSAL GLOBAL MOVEMENT By Peter Tatchell

Pride has changed the world for LGBT+ people. Long may it continue...

R

ecently, London’s celebration of LGBT+ Pride was one of thousands of Pride celebrations taking place over the summer months in nearly every country on Earth. [In South Africa, Joburg, Pretoria, NMB and Soweto Pride will soon be happening]. In less than five decades, what began in a handful of western cities has become an unprecedented global phenomenon. Today, the LGBT+ movement is the most unifying, ubiquitous and universal worldwide movement of all time – and the most successful. It exists in over 160 countries, sometimes covertly, with a common agenda of LGBT+ liberation that transcends all borders, classes, ideologies, cultures and ethnicities. It has notched up some impressive achievements. The decriminalisation of homosexuality in more than 120 countries, with 24 now legalising same-sex marriage and more than 60 protecting LGBT+ people against discrimination. Some 86 states have national human rights institutions that defend sexual and gender minorities. Nine out of ten countries have become increasingly accepting of LGBT+s in the last two decades. In many parts of the world, there is still severe persecution to be overcome. Nevertheless, it is still an extraordinary accomplishment that more than 2,000 years of homophobic, biphobic and transphobic persecution has been significantly rolled back in many countries in less than half a century. All this progress is the result of daring, inventive and unrelenting campaigning - against all odds - by national and international LGBT+ movements. More evidence of success is the fact that our rainbow flag is now the most universal flag in the world. Flown in every country, often briefly or secretly in repressive states, no other flag has such international reach and appeal. Unlike national flags, it is cherished by LGBT+ people - and straight allies - in every nation. It is the symbol of our common LGBT+ humanity. Pride is the celebration that unites hundreds of millions of diverse LGBT+ people all across the planet. I have witnessed, in my lifetime, the explosion of Pride events to the farthest corners of the world. The annual celebrations are the visible manifestation of our queer culture and communities and our collective international demand for respect, dignity and equal human rights. The idea of Pride was conceived in the early 1970s as a riposte to the then dominant view – even among many LGBT+ people – that we should be ashamed of our sexual orientation and gender identity. Aged 20, together with other members of the Gay Liberation Front, I helped pioneer the UK’s first ever Pride parade, in London in July 1972. To give it broad appeal, we deliberately pitched it as a carnival parade with a LGBT+ liberation theme. Even so, it was tiny. Most LGBT+s were in the closet and had internalised homophobia. Only 700 people showed up. There were similar ground-breaking Pride

28

The rainbow flag is the World's most unifying, universal and ubiquitous flag events in major US cities at around the same time; but also with relatively small numbers. Since then, there has been an exponential growth of Pride celebrations

all across the planet. Madrid, Sao Paulo, Toronto, Paris, New York and Berlin have each mobilised between one and two million people. No other political or social movement can match this scale, year on year. At the other end of the Pride spectrum, in some countries the festivities number only hundreds of people and suffer severe state repression, as happened in Uganda last year, where government threats of violent attack forced Pride’s cancellation. The previous year, 2016, Pride Uganda was marred by police arrests and brutality, without legal authority and with impunity. But in many countries Pride has had unparalleled success because it is a just cause, with an ethical purpose, a global resonance and, very importantly, a happy, inclusive vibe. It speaks to LGBT+ people the world over. The unique blend of carnival-like celebration and political demands projects a serious message in a fun way that is attractive to a wide audience, with a far broader appeal than traditional forms of protest. This joyful, exuberant atmosphere is infectious. Everyone likes a party and everyone wants to join in. The uplifting nature of Pride, with its flamboyance and theatricality, comes out of gay culture. But for some of us, it is also a cunning ruse to disarm and subvert homophobia, in ways that po-faced, angry demonstrations can never hope to achieve. Whilst we must enjoy the Pride celebrations and the party mood. There is also a serious message: to highlight and stand in solidarity with persecuted LGBT+s in other parts of the world especially Africa, Russia, Chechnya and Islamic States. Pride needs to be politics with joy. That’s what Pride has always been and may it long remain.

REMEMBERING STONEWALL

50 YEARS AGO LGBTI PEOPLE MADE A STAND AGAINST DISCRIMINATION AND THE MODERN-DAY GAY LIBERATION MOVEMENT WAS BORN....

2

019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall riots which set America in particular, but spilled over to other countries around the globe, on the path to getting equal rights for LGBTI people.

Inspired by the Black Power and Women’s Liberation Movements throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) initiated an anarchic campaign that permanently changed the face of the United States and it’s influence galvanised gay rights activists all over the world. The GLF was a movement that was started in New York following the Stonewall riots and adopted in London and San Francisco. Stonewall Inn, in New York City’s Greenwich Village, played a key role in LGBT history as the location of a series of riots in June 1969 by members of the community in response to a police raid.

riots sparked an entire civil rights movement, and is the reason Pride Month is celebrated in June in the United States. Within weeks of the uprising, Greenwich Village residents quickly organised into activist groups to concentrate efforts on establishing places for gays and lesbians to be open about their sexual orientation without fear of being arrested. From that date the movement has grown to what it is today, and Pride celebrations are held throughout the world – all inspired by this historic event. It is widely considered to be the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement ... a movement that was to spread from New York to other cities in the USA, to London, Europe and within a few years, LGBTI+ people all over the World were celebrating Pride.

This year New York pride will simultaneously host World Pride and will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising.

The idea of "gay liberation" reached South Africa the during the 1980’s when a number of organisations were formed, mainly in Johannesburg. BENEFIT, a group of 20 organisations held a large gay festival called SHAFT 8 at Crown Mines in 1986, this was the closest to a gay pride event ever in South Africa and it happened a year before the famous gay activist, Simon Nkoli was acquitted and released from jail.

On June 29, 1969, an unexpected Police raid brought Stonewall Inn (at the time it was known to be popular among the most marginalised people in the gay community) to one of the most iconic and historic riots in history. Tensions between New York City police and gay residents of Greenwich Village erupted into more protests the next evening, and again several nights later. Led by prominent activists Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who were gender non-conforming, the

After his release Simon became very involved in the quest for LGBTI rights, and in 1988, GLOW (the Gay & Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand) was formed. GLOW organised the first Gay Pride March on the African Continent, and as a member of BENEFIT, I participated in the march through the streets of Hillbrow, Johannesburg. It was both exciting and daunting as the marchers, some 800 of us walked through

Some of the first Pride marches began on the anniversary of the riots in 1970, and in some countries, Prides are still referred to as Christopher Street Day Parades in honour of the pub’s location.

the streets, many with brown bags over our heads for fear of being recognised, mainly by the Apartheid-State security police. Speakers at this very politically energised event included well-known gay activists Edward Cameron and Simon Nkoli. Edward Cameron, Dennis Sifris, Simon Nkoli, Peter Tatchell, Ivan Toms, Sheila Lapinsky and Julia Nichol and the many others who faught for LGBTI rights, lobbying and pressurising those people responsible for drawing up South Africa’s post-apartheid constitution, to include rights for LGBTI+ people - To these people we owe a huge debt of gratitude, without them our lives may have been very different as illustrated in an interview Peter Tatchell had with ANC Executive member, Ruth Mompathi in 1987. When he raised the issue of the human rights of lesbians and their role in post-apartheid South Africa, she replied, “I hope that in a liberated South Africa people will live a normal life. I emphasise the word normal ... tell me. Are lesbians and gays normal? No! It is not normal”. We see this attitude prevail in other countries in Africa, Kenya and Uganda where the governments are trying to make same-sex relationships punishable by death! Zimbabwe, where former President Mugabe likened gay people to worse than dogs, and of course those Islamic states where the death penalty is on the statute for gay men in particular. The continent has sen some chinks of enlightenment with Angola recently decriminalising same-sex unions, but here in South Africa we have much to be thankful for, and it is for the strides we have made towards equality that we MUST celebrate Pride.

Simon Nkoli - one of the fathers of the South African gay liberation movement

Today Pride is a singular celebration with a million faces—individuals, families, lovers, leaders, and friends and apart from celebrating the advances the LGBTI+ community has made in the fight for equality we also remember how the movement began.

Cape Town Pride is wholly run by a group of volunteers who are passionate about equality and diversity. We are a not-for-profit organisation, and any surplus funds we raise are used to support the LGBTQ+ community and improve the events. Together, we run the South Africa’s biggest, most diverse pride, and our job is to make sure we provide a platform for every part of Cape Town’s LGBTQ+ community (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans*, queer, questioning, intersex, non-binary, asexual, polysexual, genderqueer and gender variant people) to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues and campaign for the freedoms that will allow them to live their lives on a genuinely equal footing. From Pink Party, which helps to raise funds for the events for the Pride week, to our annual Parade through the heart of the Cape Town and the amazing 1 week, city-wide festival that precedes Pride weekend, everything we do is designed to give LGBTQ+ people a platform to be visible and speak loudly to the rest of the city about what we have achieved, how far we have come and what is still needed. Cape Town Pride includes people of every race and faith, whether disabled or able-bodied, and all sexualities and genders including lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, queer, questioning, intersex, trans*, genderqueer, gender variant or non-binary as well as straight and cis allies. Around 15 people volunteer year-round to help us deliver what has become a world-class Pride. We are already a pretty diverse bunch, but we are looking to add to our diversity. So if Pride is for you, then climb on board for the wild ride that is Cape Town Pride!
