No caminho certo Mais uma vez, como em diversas ocasiões nos últimos 20 anos – período no qual atuo como presidente da Federação Mineira de Vôlei (FMV) –, receberemos um grande evento de voleibol em Minas Gerais. Traz muita felicidade ver o Mineirinho sediar o Mundial de Clubes Masculino 2014. Palco histórico, no qual Minas Gerais bateu o recorde mundial de público em partidas oficiais da modalidade, o tradicional ginásio da Pampulha é considerado a grande casa do voleibol brasileiro. A temporada 2013/2014 trouxe outros marcos importantes para o nosso voleibol. Além dos grandes eventos sediados em sequência – Campeonato Sul-Americano Masculino edições 2013 e 2014, Mundial Masculino de Clubes edições 2013 e 2014 e a final da Superliga masculina 2013/2014 –, Minas Gerais alcançou um marco de extrema importância. Pela 15ª temporada consecutiva, uma equipe mineira esteve na final da Superliga, seja no naipe feminino ou masculino. O feito reforça o árduo trabalho realizado na modalidade em nosso Estado, mas o mérito definitivamente não se restringe à federação. Ele se deve a todos os envolvidos: clubes, patrocinadores, comissões técnicas, atletas, árbitros, escolas e professores, que, ao longo dos anos, têm elevado Minas Gerais ao topo do voleibol nacional. A FMV reforça seu compromisso com o esporte no Estado, atuando da iniciação de jovens na modalidade ao apoio e comprometimento com as equipes profissionais de ponta. Aproveito a oportunidade para parabenizar todos os envolvidos com o voleibol em Minas e agradecer ao governo, que estreita seus laços e compromissos com o esporte e tem papel fundamental no apoio às federações esportivas, aos patrocinadores e às equipes. Parabenizo, por fim, o Sada Cruzeiro, atual campeão mundial, sul-americano e brasileiro, que mostra sua grandeza ao ser novamente anfitrião da maior competição mundial de clubes da modalidade.
On the right path
Once again, as on many occasions during the last 20 years – a period of time which he has been the Minas Gerais Volleyball Federation (FMV) President – we shall host an important volleyball event in Minas Gerais. It brings me great pleasure to see the Mineirinho host the 2014 Men’s Club World Championship. A historic stage, which saw Minas Gerais beat the world record for attendance at a volleyball game, the traditional gymnasium in Pampulha is considered the Big home of Brazilian volleyball. Other important milestones were set in the 2013/2014 season. In addition to the sequence of big events that were hosted - 2013 and 2014 Men’s South American Championship, 2013 and 2014 Men’s Club World Championship and the 2013/2014 Men’s Superliga final -, Minas Gerais reached a milestone of extreme importance. For the 15th consecutive season, a mineiro team competed in the Superliga final, whether it be in the Men’s or Female competition. This fact underlines the hard work carried out in the sport in our state, but the Federation cannot take all of the plaudits. They are due to all those involved: clubs, sponsors, technical commissions, athletes, referees, schools and teaches, who, over the years, have taken Minas Gerais to the top of national volleyball. The FMV strengthens its commitment to the sport in the state by being involved from the initiation of the young into the sport to supporting the top professional teams. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all of those involved in the sport in Minas and thank the government, who is strengthening its ties and commitment to the sport and has a fundamental role in supporting sporting federations, sponsors and the teams. Finally, I would like to congratulate Sada Cruzeiro, the current World, South American and Brazilian champion, who demonstrate their greatness by once again being the host of volleyball’s biggest world club competition.

pós pouco mais de seis meses, o Mundial de Clubes está de volta para agitar a torcida do Brasil e do globo. Mais uma vez, o Sada Cruzeiro terá a honra de ser o anfitrião da competição. Em 2013, com uma organização de alto nível, o time possibilitou que o público presente em Betim desfrutasse o melhor do vôlei com comodidade. A edição, inclusive, foi bastante elogiada pela Federação Internacional de Vôlei (FIVB). Desde a escolha de Minas Gerais para receber o torneio pela primeira vez, já existia a possibilidade de o Estado sediar o evento novamente. Para isso, era necessário que tudo saísse dentro do esperado pela FIVB. E saiu. A grande novidade deste ano é que o Mundial terá uma casa diferente. Desta vez, o contemplado será o ginásio do Mineirinho, o “Templo do Vôlei” brasileiro, situado em Belo Horizonte. Na nova sede, os torcedores terão a chance – além de ver os jogos – de aproveitar a região da Pampulha, onde fica o Mineirão, que vai receber seis partidas da Copa do Mundo de futebol. A fórmula de disputa do torneio será a mesma, sendo oito clubes, divididos em dois grupos. Os dois melhores de cada chave avançarão às semifinais. Entre os participantes, três estiveram na última edição, casos do campeão Sada Cruzeiro, do argentino UPCN (vice sul-americano) e da potência italiana Trentino, convidado. Os outros são o campeão europeu Belogorie Belgorod (RUS), o campeão asiático Matin Varamin (IRN), o campeão africano Esperance (TUN), o convidado Al-Rayyan (QAT) e o representante da Confederação da América do Norte, Central e Caribe de Voleibol (Norceca), Guaynabo Mets (PRI).

After just over six months, the Club World Championship is back to stir up the Brazilian and international crowds. Once again, Sada Cruzeiro shall have the honour of being the competition host. In 2013, as a result of the excellent organisation, the team enabled the crowds in Betim to enjoy the best of volleyball in comfort. This edition was also lauded by the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). It was always likely that Minas Gerais would host the competition again following its first nomination, however it still needed to meet the requirements of the FIVB. And it did. The big news this year is that the Club World Championship will have a different home. This time, the Mineirinho gymnasium, the “Temple of Brazilian Volleyball”, situated in Belo Horizonte will be the setting. Besides seeing the games, the supporters will have the opportunity to take in the region of Pampulha, home to the Mineirão, which will host six football World Cup games. The tournament format will remain the same, i.e. eight clubs divided into 2 groups. The top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals. Amongst the participants, three teams competed in the last edition: the champions Sada Cruzeiro, the Argentinian UPCN (South American runners-up) and the Italian powerhouse Trentino. The other teams are the European champion Belogorie Belgorod (RUS), the Asian champion Matin Varamin (IRN), the African champion Esperance (TUN), Al Rayyan (QAT) and the representative from the North and Central America and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation (Norceca), the Guaynabo Mets (PRI).

primeira edição do Mundial de Clubes masculino, em Minas Gerais, trouxe sorte para o Brasil. A força da fiel torcida celeste, que compareceu em bom número ao ginásio Divino Braga, em Betim, durante os seis dias de competição, contribuiu para que o Sada Cruzeiro conquistasse um título inédito para o vôlei brasileiro no ano passado. Alguns times do Brasil até já tinham participado da competição e chegado à grande final, como foi o caso do próprio Sada, em 2012, mas deixar para trás todos os adversários ainda era um tabu. Na decisão passada, era esperado um duelo entre os times mais fortes do torneio. O anfitrião jogou “nas pontas dos dedos” e contou com o poliesportivo lotado para pressionar os russos do Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, então campeão europeu. Contra um time alto e com grande poder de saque, o Sada Cruzeiro respondeu à altura. O resultado de 3 sets a 0 deixou clara a superioridade cruzeirense contra um dos times mais fortes do mundo. Na terceira posição ficou o Trentino, que entrou como convidado pela sua trajetória de sucesso. Os italianos haviam sido os campeões das últimas quatro edições. Na disputa pelo terceiro lugar, o Trentino passou pelo UPCN, que fez bem seu papel contra algumas das maiores forças do planeta. Na sequência, vieram equipes de menor expressão, que chegaram com o único intuito de ganhar experiência e retornar mais fortes para suas ligas. Destaque para os japoneses do Panasonic, que vieram com o brasileiro Dante no elenco.
The first edition of the Men’s Club World Championship to be held in Minas Gerais brought luck to Brazil. The fervent support of the loyal Sada Cruzeiro fans, who attended in large numbers over the six days of the competition held at the Divino Braga gymnasium in Betim, helped Sada Cruzeiro win an unprecedented title for Brazilian volleyball last year. Other Brazilian teams had already participated in the competition and reached the final, as was the case of Sada in 2012, but none had every come out on top. Last year’s final saw the expected duel between the tournament’s strongest two teams. The host played on their played their hearts out and was assisted by a capacity crowd that pressured the Russians of Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, the then European champion. Against a tall team with a strong service game, Sada Cruzeiro met the challenge. The 3-0 scoreline underlined the superiority of the Cruzeirenses against one of the world’s strongest teams. Trentino came third after having been invited to take part in the competition on the back of its history of success. The Italians had been crowned champions at the last four editions. In the dispute for third place, Trentino faced UPCN, who had played its role well against some of the strongest teams on the planet. The weaker teams, whose main objective was to gain experience and return to their respective leagues stronger, completed the classification. O “Templo do Vôl e The “Temple of Volleyball” returns to centre stage
Internacionalmente conhecido, o ginásio do Mineirinho vai receber pela primeira vez em sua história uma edição do Mundial de Clubes

naugurado na década de 80, o grandioso e afamado estádio Jornalista Felipe Drummond, carinhosamente apelidado de Mineirinho, tem todo o status requerido a um anfitrião do Mundial de Clubes. Também conhecido como o “Templo do Vôlei” – título que ganhou merecidamente por ser o recordista de público em uma partida da modalidade –, o ginásio está mais do que acostumado aos holofotes internacionais. Além de duelos válidos pela Liga Mundial, uma das competições masculinas mais importantes entre as seleções, o local já foi palco de inúmeros shows e festivais musicais, cerimônias religiosas e sediou até edições do UFC. Às vésperas da Copa do Mundo de futebol, a importância da arena, que será o palco do Mundial de Vôlei de 5 a 10 de maio, ganha proporções ainda maiores. Separado do Mineirão apenas pela avenida Abrahão Caram, o ginásio vai se tornar o centro de credenciamento da imprensa durante a realização da Copa. “O Mineirinho tem uma história forte com o voleibol mundial. Agora, inserido nesse contexto que o Sada proporcionou (por ser o anfitrião), a um mês da Copa, creio que o torneio será benéfico para todos. O período de realização dos jogos vai ser muito bom porque já estaremos respirando Copa”, comenta o secretário de Esportes e Turismo, Tiago Lacerda. Ao redor do Mineirinho, o cenário é bastante inspirador. A lagoa da Pampulha, um dos principais pontos turísticos de Belo Horizonte, encontra-se a poucos metros e é local de encontro de ciclistas, maratonistas e patinadores, que aproveitam o clima favorável à prática esportiva. Mais perto ainda está o Centro Esportivo Universitário (CEU), da Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (UFMG), que possui excelente estrutura para o treinamento de esportes olímpicos, tendo a pista de atletismo como sua instalação mais famosa. Um pouco mais afastado, mas ainda na região, fica o centro de treinamento do Cruzeiro, a Toca I, onde são realizadas as atividades para as categorias de base do clube. A Toca II, em que acontecem os treinos do time profissional, também está situada na região da Pampulha.
Cultura
Todo o complexo da Pampulha, que inclui os centros esportivos e as atrações turísticas, foi construído na gestão de Juscelino Kubitschek como então prefeito da capital mineira, a partir de 1946. Quase 70 anos depois, o local também passou a ser conhecido no cenário cultural com a construção do Museu de Arte Moderna da Pampulha (antigo cassino fechado em 1946), além das já famosas atrações da região, como a igrejinha de São Francisco, uma das criações de Oscar Niemeyer, e ainda pela Casa do Baile, casa noturna que encerrou suas atividades no ano de 1948. Os locais foram restaurados e reabertos para visitação do público e complementam a bela imagem do cartão-postal formado pela orla da lagoa.
Lazer
A região onde fica localizado o Mineirinho é também uma das mais badaladas na noite da cidade e, seguindo o exemplo de diversidade que propõe, traz opções para uma população bastante heterogênea. O Parque Guanabara e o zoológico são as grandes atrações para as crianças, enquanto os bares da avenida Fleming oferecem culinária japonesa, petiscos, comida típica, fast food, entre outros. O lugar é o “point” dos jovens da capital mineira.

Internationally known, the Mineirinho gymnasium will for the first time in its history host an edition of the Club World Championship Inaugurated in the 1980s, the grandiose and famed Jornalista Felipe Drummond gymnasium, affectionately known as Mineirinho, meets all of the requirements for a Club World Championship host. Also known as the “Temple of Volleyball” - a title which it deservedly gained after setting the record for attendance at a volleyball game-, the gymnasium is more than used to being in the international spotlight. In addition to hosting World League matches, one of the most important men’s club competitions, the Mineirinho has also staged numerous shows and music festivals, religious ceremonies and even editions of the UFC. On the eve of the football World Cup, the importance of the arena, which will be the stage for the Volleyball Club World Championship between the 5th and 10th May, is even greater. Separated from the Mineirão by Abrãao Caram avenue, the gymnasium will be the press accreditation centre during the World Cup. “The Mineirinho has a long history with world volleyball. With Sada being the host and at only one month prior to the World Cup, I believe that the tournament will benefit everybody. The timing of the games will be very good because we will already be living and breathing the World Cup”, comments the Sports and Tourism secretary, Tiago Lacerda. Around the Mineirinho, the scenery is quite inspiring. Pampulha lake, one of the main tourist attractions in Belo Horizonte, is located only a few metres away and is frequented by cyclists, runners and skaters, who take advantage of the favourable climate. Even closer is the University Sport Centre (CEU) of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG), which provides excellent Olympic sport facilities of which the athletics track is the most famous. A little further away, but still in the area, is Cruzeiro football club’s training centre, Toca I, which is used by the club’s youth team. The professional team trains at Toca II, which is also situated in the Pampulha region.
Culture
Construction of the entire Pampulha complex, which includes the sports centres and tourist attractions, began in 1946 under the guidance of Juscelino Kubitschek, the then mayor of the mineiro capital. Almost 70 years later, the area became known on the cultural scene, following the construction of the Pampulha Modern Art Museum (a former casino closed in 1946), in addition to those attractions that were already well known, such as the São Franciso church, one of Oscar Niemeyer’s creations, and the Casa do Baile, a nightclub that closed in 1948. The sites were restored and reopened to the public and complement the beautiful postcard image formed by the lake’s edge.
Leisure
The region in which the Mineirinho is situated is also one of the liveliest at night, which attracts a diverse crowd due to the variety of options. The Guanabara Park and Zoo are big attractions for children, while the bars on Fleming Avenue offer Japanese food, snacks, typical and fast food, amongst others. The area is the hotspot for the youth of the mineiro capital.

Na temporada 2013/2014, time brasileiro venceu tudo o que disputou: o Mundial de Clubes, o Sul-Americano, a Superliga, a Copa Brasil e o Campeonato Mineiro
Q
ue o Sada Cruzeiro é o atual papa-títulos do Brasil, não resta nenhuma dúvida. Não bastasse ter chegado a 15 finais de 15 competições que disputou, o elenco faturou nada menos que 12 taças e agora vai, mais forte do que nunca, buscar mais um título para a coleção: o do bicampeonato no Mundial de Clubes. Na bagagem, o aprendizado com a participação em dois Mundiais pode fazer a diferença. “Já termos jogado essa competição várias vezes é importante para todo mundo. São times que jogam melhor do que qualquer seleção. Competir nesse nível dá uma bagagem muito grande”, afirma o técnico do Sada Cruzeiro, Marcelo Mendez. Na primeira experiência do grupo em Mundiais, os cruzeirenses foram a surpresa do campeonato por terem ficado com o vice, em Doha (QAT). Já na segunda vez, o time da casa apostava na tor-

cida a favor, mas enfrentava a concorrência dos italianos do Trentino e dos russos do Lokomotiv Novosibirsk. Alheio ao favoritismo, o clube mostrou a vontade de ser o primeiro brasileiro a ter o título internacional logo no início. Venceu os dois primeiros jogos, mas caiu diante do Lokomotiv ainda na fase de classificação. Mas a chance de dar o troco viria na decisão, quando os celestes impuseram seu padrão de jogo e atropelaram os russos. Não há nenhuma fórmula mágica que explique o sucesso do Sada Cruzeiro, porém manter a base do Mundial 2013 certamente foi uma boa decisão. As opções no banco aumentaram e também podem ser uma boa para Mendez. “Mantivemos uma base, e isso é muito importante. Tenho certeza de que é um detalhe que vai pesar a nosso favor. Muitas vezes, os jogadores se conhecem e sabem o que o outro vai fazer só de olhar”, contou o oposto celeste Wallace.

There is no doubt whatsoever that Sada Cruzeiro is the current dominant force in Brazil. As if it wasn’t enough to reach 15 finals of the 15 competitions it disputed, the side won an incredible 12 trophies and is now stronger than ever, in search of another title to add to its collection: its second Club World Championship. The experience of having participated in two Club World Championships could make the difference. “Having taken part in this competition various times is important for everybody. We’re talking about teams that play better than any national side. Competing at this level provides invaluable experience”, states the Sada Cruzeiro coach, Marcelo Mendez. The Cruzeirenses were the surprise team in their first time out at the Club World Championship, where they were runners-up in Doha (QAT). In their second time out, the home team had the crowd in the their favour, but still faced stiff competition from the Italian team Trentino and the Russian team Lokomotiv Novosibirsk. Putting aside the fact they were the favourites, the club showed the desire to be the first Brazilian club to win the international title right from the start. They won the first two games of the group phase, but were defeated by Lokomotiv. But their chance for revenge came in the final, when the blue team imposed their style of play and beat the Russians. There is no magic formula which explains the success of Sada Cruzeiro, however, maintaining the core of the team that disputed the 2013 Club World Championship was certainly a wise decision. The options on the substitutes’ bench have increased and could be good for Mendez. “We kept the core of the team and this is very important. I’m certain that this will weigh in our favour. The players often understand each other and know what the other is going to do just by looking at them”, explained the opposite Wallace.

Um fato que pesa a favor do Sada Cruzeiro é também a boa fase dos atletas individualmente. Muitos deles se destacaram entre os primeiros nos fundamentos da última Superliga. O ataque, arma forte dos celestes, tem o ponteiro cubano Leal e o oposto Wallace no topo do ranking; os centrais Éder e Isac figuram entre os melhores bloqueadores; William é o levantador mais eficiente, e o ponteiro Filipe está na lista de melhores na recepção.
De todos os citados e com exceção do cubano, apenas Filipe ainda não foi convocado para defender a seleção brasileira. Éder e Wallace ainda aparecem como destaques no quesito saque. Mesmo com poucos números para comprovar, quem está no banco também tem dado conta do recado. Nas partidas do campeonato nacional em que Leal não atuou, o venezuelano Diaz foi acionado e teve desempenho semelhante. No meio de
rede, Douglas Cordeiro revezou com Isac por diversas vezes e tem a experiência a seu favor. Paulo Vinícius (PV), reserva de Wallace, também aparece bem quando acionado por Mendez. No levantamento, as opções são ainda maiores. Além do experiente William, o Sada já pode contar com Vinhedo, que havia se lesionado no início do ano, e ainda com o jovem Salim, uma das surpresas da temporada.
One fact that weighs in the favour of Sada Cruzeiro is the good form of the athletes individually. Many of them were amongst the best in terms of the fundamentals of the game in the last Superliga. In attack, the strength of the blue team, the Cuban outside hitter Leal and the opposite Wallace topped the ranking; the middle-blockers Éder and Isac figured amongst the best blockers; William was the most efficient setter and the outside hitter Filipe made the list as one of
the best receivers. Out of all those cited above, with the exception of the Cuban, only Filipe hasn’t been called up to play for the Brazilian national side. Éder and Wallace are still two of the best at serving. Despite not having the numbers to prove it, those on the bench have also answered the call. Whenever Leal missed a game in the national championship, the Venezuelan Diaz stepped in and performed at a similarly high level. At the middle of
the net, Douglas Cordeiro often took turns with Isac and has experience in his favour. Paulo Vinícius (PV), Wallace’s reserve, has also performed well when he is called upon by Mendez. In terms of assisting, the options are every greater. Besides the experienced William, Sada can also count on Vinhedo, who picked up an injury at the beginning of the year, as well as the young player Salim, one of the surprises of the season.

Aos 34 anos, William se tornou presença garantida na seleção brasileira e conquistou ouro no Sul-Americano e prata na última Liga Mundial. O jogador se orgulha em dizer que tem a família como inspiração: retribui o carinho do falecido pai exibindo um bigode em todas as finais de que participa e se derrete pela pequena Nina, sua primeira filha, de apenas 7 meses.
The skilled captain is entering his fifth season defending the colours of Sada Cruzeiro and is an indisputable starter. Adored by the fans, William has gained even more confidence playing for the mineiro team, he has matured and demonstrates all of his experience on the court to create a more efficient way of orchestrating attacks and counter-attacks. And the strategy has worked out well. The Magician, as he is also known, plays the role of a real maestro in the team, inverting plays from one side of the net to the other, to the middle or wherever it’s the most complicated for the adversary to defend. At 34 years old, William has become a guaranteed presence in the Brazilian national team and won gold at the South American championship and silver in the last World League. The player takes pride in stating that his family inspires him: he reciprocates the affection shown by his late father by growing a moustache for every final that he disputes, and drools over little Nina, his first daughter of only seven months.

uxiliar técnico e braço direito do treinador do Sada Cruzeiro, Henrique Furtado acompanha de perto a rotina pesada de treinamentos dos jogadores cruzeirenses. Nesta temporada, ele foi o responsável por comandar o Sada-Funec-Contagem na Superliga B e fez um grande trabalho. Henrique vê muitos pontos positivos na maratona de jogos que o Sada enfrentou do último Mundial até aqui. Os jogos complicados, especialmente no fim da Superliga, colocaram a equipe à prova, e o dever foi muito bem cumprido. Assim como no último Mundial, o auxiliar prevê um alto nível de dificuldade e não enxerga favoritos nem com o seu clube tendo vivido um bom momento. Para ele, a competição deve ter um equilíbrio ainda maior nesta edição.
The Assistant Coach and right-hand man of Sada Cruzeiro’s coach, Henrique Furtado, closely follows the demanding training regime of the cruzeirense players. Last season, he was responsible for coaching Sada-Funec-Contagem in the Superliga B and did a great job. Henrique sees many positive points in the marathon of games that Sada has played since the last Club World Championship. The complicated games, especially at the end of the Superliga, put the team to the test, which the team passed with flying colours. As in the last Club World Championship, the assistant coach predicts an extremely tough competition and cannot name any favourites, not even his own club despite their rich vein of form. In his opinion the competition will be even more balanced this time round.

Sada Cruzeiro has won everything this season, the most recent title being that of the Superliga. Does this make them the team to beat in this Club World Championship? They are of course an extremely strong team that will compete with all of the main teams. I believe that this Club World Championship will be even more difficult, more finely balanced and at this stage there is no favourite. The games will be played at a very high level.

Já são dois Mundiais, estamos indo para o terceiro, e, na final do ano passado, vencemos os russos. Acho que é muito difícil, mas já provamos que não é impossível vencê-los.
Is the presence of the Russian centre Muserskiy, who brings back bad memories for Brazil, a little intimidating? Not at all. Our group is very experienced and used to facing these great adversaries. We’ve previously taken part in two Club World Championships, this being the third, and in last year’s final we beat the Russians. I think it will be very difficult, but we’ve already shown that it’s not impossible to beat them.
A preparação para o Mundial deste ano, já que o Sada já disputou dois, foi mais fácil? A experiência das outras competições vai fazendo com que o caminho fique mais claro. O grupo está se preparando muito bem. Na reta final da Superliga, tivemos jogos muito difíceis, isso nos ajudou bastante, e estamos muito confiantes em fazer um grande torneio.
Given that Sada has already participated twice, was the preparation for this year’s Club World Championship easier? The experience of the other competitions has made the journey easier. The group’s preparation has been very good. In the final stage of the Superliga, we played very difficult games, which helped us greatly and we are very confident that we’ll have a great tournament. Have all the teams been studied in ahead of the competition? Yes, we have gathered information on all of the teams. Some we already know, others we received the material and have been studying it closely. We were very focused on the end of the Superliga, but as soon as it ended, we directed all of our attention to the Club World Championship.

E mais uma vez, o destino pode colocar frente a frente dois personagens-símbolo dessa rivalidade. No Mundial de Clubes de vôlei deste ano, o oposto brasileiro Wallace, melhor jogador na edição 2013 pelo Sada Cruzeiro, e o central russo Dmitriy Muserskiy, atualmente no Belogorie Belogorod-RUS, têm grandes chances de se reencontrarem em mais um confronto decisivo. Dos dois duelos entre os jogadores por suas respectivas seleções, a derrota mais amarga para o brasileiro foi nos Jogos Olímpicos. A seleção verde-amarela saiu na frente na grande final, na qual Wallace, em dia inspirado, foi o maior pontuador do Brasil, com 27 marcações. Mas no terceiro set, a situação se complicou para o grupo do técnico Bernardinho. A Rússia resolveu apostar em uma mudança tática e improvisou o central, de 2,18m, na posição de oposto. Mas, agora, em um provável reencontro dos “gigantes”, o brasileiro garante que não entrará em quadra com as lembranças dos jogos passados. “Acho que já superei isso, mas quando eu vi (que o time do Muserskiy iria jogar o Mundial), fiquei com aquele pensamento de ‘de novo o cara? Será que vai ser diferente, que desta vez vou ganhar?’. Mas eu, quando entro em quadra, não me lembro mais disso, não coloco mais nada na cabeça”, afirmou o brasileiro. Prova de que a Rússia não deve mais ser tratada como uma “sombra” por Wallace foi a vitória, por 3 sets a 0, sobre os também russos do Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, na final do Mundial passado. “No clube é totalmente diferente: vamos fazer de tudo para jogar de igual para igual com todas as equipes que chegarem, e quanto a eles não vai ser diferente”, concluiu o oposto brasileiro.

The dominant force in volleyball in the first decade of the XXI century, the Brazilian national team has seen their reign recently threatened by a renewed Russian national side, to whom they fell in the finals at the London Olympic Games in 2012 and the 2013 World League. And once again, destiny could bring two symbolic figures of this rivalry face to face. In this year’s Volleyball Club World Championship, there is a big change that Sada Cruzeiro’s Brazilian opposite Wallace, most valuable player at the 2013 edition, and the Russian centre Muserskiy, currently playing for Belogorie Belogorod (RUS), will face each other in another decisive encounter. Of the two duels between the players and their respective national teams, the bitterest defeat for the Brazilians was that of the Olympic Games. In the grand final, Brazil took the lead, in which Wallace, in inspired form, became the biggest Brazilian points scorer with 27. But in the third set, things got tricky for coach Bernardinho’s team. ssim como no último ano, o maior adversário do Sada Cruzeiro virá da gelada Rússia. Só que, em vez do Lokomotiv Novosibirsk, entrará em ação o Belogorie Belgorod, atual campeão europeu. Na final do torneio continental, o time bateu os turcos do Halkbank, que conta com uma verdadeira seleção mundial em seu elenco. Com isso, os russos do Belogorie garantiram presença no Mundial pela primeira vez e estão entre os times a serem batidos. Na campanha, foram 12 jogos, com apenas quatro sets perdidos do início ao fim da Liga dos Campeões. Conhecedor da liga russa, pela experiência acumulada no país, o preparador físico Giovanni Foppa deixa claros quais são os pontos fortes do time. “É um time que tem um poder de saque muito grande. Eles contam com individualidades fortes como o próprio Tetyukhin, além do oposto alemão Grozer e do central Muserskiy. Acredito que a rodada de bola é fundamental para jogar contra essa equipe”, destacou Foppa, que também foi preparador físico do time cruzeirense. Ele atuou na temporada 2011/2012, quando os mineiros foram campeões brasileiros pela primeira vez. Ao lado de Muserskiy e Tetyukhin, outro integrante do time que faz parte da seleção russa é o ponta Dmitriy Ilinykh. Muserskiy é bastante conhecido da torcida brasileira. Ele foi o grande responsável pela virada russa na final das Olimpíadas de 2012. Deslocado para a função de oposto na ocasião, o central foi figura decisiva para o ouro cair nas mãos russas.

iovanni Foppa é considerado um dos preparadores físicos mais competentes no mundo do vôlei. Seu currículo vitorioso deixa clara a contribuição que ele teve em importantes equipes do globo. Uma de suas maiores conquistas foi a Liga dos Campeões, pelo Zenit Kazan (RUS), onde trabalhou nas temporadas 2006/2007 e 2007/2008. De lá, Foppa foi para a Polônia, onde ajudou o Belchatow a chegar à segunda posição na Liga dos Campeões e também no Mundial. Sua volta ao Brasil teve o Sada Cruzeiro como destino, onde ele foi campeão da Superliga 2011/2012. Depois, Foppa voltou para o russo Dínamo Krasnodar.
Giovanni Foppa is considered one of the most competent fitness coaches in the world of volleyball. His resume is full of victories, making his contributions to important teams quite clear. One of his biggest accomplishments was his work with Zenit Kazan (RUS) in the Champion’s League, where he worked during the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 seasons. From there, Foppa went to Poland, where he helped Belchtow get second place in the Champion’s league and Club World Championship. He returned to Brazil to work with Sada Cruzeiro and helped them win the Superliga in 2011/2012. After that, Foppa returned to the Russian team Dinamo Krasnodar.
Com quem do Belogorie você se recorda já ter trabalhado? Tive o prazer de ter trabalhado com Sergey Tetyukhin, Alexander Bogomolov e Alexander Kosarev. Junto com esses três jogadores, conquistei três dos grandes títulos da minha carreira: campeão Russo 2006/2007, campeão da Copa Russa 2007 e campeão da Champions League 2008.
Do you remember working with any members of the Belogorie team in particular? I had the pleasure of working with Sergey Tetyukin, Alexander Bogomolov and Alexander Kosarev. With these three players, I earned three of the most important titles of my career: the 2006/2007 Russian Championship, the 2007 Russian Cup, and the 2008 Champions League.

E ter a maturidade e tranquilidade de trabalhar quando o saque do Belogorie entrar, pois haverá vários momentos nos quais isso poderá acontecer. Which team will you root for? Because I am Brazilian I will root for Sada. The team not only represents Brazil but also a place where I have a lot of close friends. I am very fond of this team, and it is also a place where I helped earn some titles.

o contrário de 2013, quando precisou desbancar o Vivo-Minas na final do Sul-Americano, o UPCN, da Argentina, conseguiu sua vaga no Mundial deste ano com a segunda posição no torneio continental de 2014. Como o adversário da decisão era o anfitrião Sada Cruzeiro, o time de San Juan chegou para o último jogo do Sul-Americano com a vaga garantida no Mundial. Mesmo assim, os argentinos mostraram a já conhecida garra portenha para incomodar os celestes, que viraram o jogo após perder os dois primeiros sets. E é com esse brio e uma experiência internacional ainda maior que o UPCN chega para o Mundial pela segunda vez seguida. O objetivo é tentar superar o resultado da última edição, quando caiu diante do Sada Cruzeiro na semifinal e terminou na quarta posição. “A edição de 2013 do Mundial foi muito boa para o nosso time. Acho que ela vai nos ajudar bastante, pois já saberemos como se joga um torneio desse porte e o que é necessário para ir bem”, destacou o levantador e capitão do time, Demian Gonzalez. Mesmo sabendo que será complicado desbancar o próprio Sada Cruzeiro, além dos russos do Belogorie, o UPCN vai fazer de tudo para conquistar a melhor posição possível. “Nossas pretensões são altas, queremos o título mundial como todos que entrarão nesta disputa. Unlike in 2013, when UPCN needed to beat Vivo-Minas in the South American final, the team won their place in the Club World Championship by getting second place in the 2014 South American Championship. Because their opponent in the competition was Sada Cruzeiro, the team from San Juan arrived in the final with a guarantied place in the Club World Championship. Despite their loss, the Argentinians displayed their well-known fighting spirit against the blues, who turned the game in their favor after losing the first two sets. om a base mantida há cinco temporadas, o UPCN tem no comando do técnico Fabián Armoa um de seus pontos fortes. Estrategista e tranquilo, características que ficam claras para quem o observa atentamente, Armoa é um dos treinadores argentinos mais vitoriosos nos últimos tempos. Conhecendo bem o potencial do elenco que tem na mão, ele espera que o time supere a boa marca da última edição do Mundial, quando seus comandados terminaram em quarto lugar. Para as partidas que serão realizadas no Mineirinho, Armoa deve ter, novamente, a presença da esposa e dos dois filhos, que, em 2013, vieram de San Juan até Betim para dar um apoio mais do que especial.

Antes, nosso time nunca havia participado de uma competição desse nível nem enfrentado, em sequência, equipes tão poderosas. Era tudo novidade para a gente. Agora, será diferente. Já conhecemos boa parte dos times e o ambiente, a região, as pessoas. Isso tudo contribui. Chegamos já sabendo das dificuldades que iremos enfrentar. A ideia é fazer uma campanha melhor que a última, quando o quarto lugar foi alcançado? Claro, sem dúvidas. Sabemos que Sada Cruzeiro e Belogorie têm tudo para se encontrar na final e disputar a medalha de ouro. Ficar em quarto no último ano foi bom, mas queremos mais e sabemos do nosso potencial de ir adiante. A primeira coisa a ser feita é jogar bem todas as partidas. Do you think your participation in the last Club World Championship will be useful? Certainly. Playing in the last competition was important for us in a variety of ways. We had never participated in a competition of this magnitude, nor had we faced such powerful opponents. Everything was new to us. Now, things will be different. We’re familiar with a good portion of the teams, the atmosphere, the region, and the people. All of this contributes in a way. We will arrive already knowing the challenges that we will face. So, your goal is to do better than your fourth place performance in the previous competition? Without a doubt. We know that Sada Cruzeiro and Belogorie have what it takes to encounter each other in the final. Getting fourth place last year was great, but we want more and know that we have the potential to do better. The most important thing is to play every game well. JUNIOR DOS SANTOS 6 O GUERREIRO O brasileiro Junior dos Santos pode ser um desconhecido do grande público do seu país acostumado a acompanhar o vôlei. No entanto, na Argentina, o central é considerado uma das referências do time do UPCN, atual tetracampeão da liga local. Há seis anos no país vizinho, o atleta já se mostra adaptado ao estilo de jogo e à cultura argentina. Acredito que em uma competição de alto nível como o Mundial, o bloqueio e a defesa precisam de um crescimento para chegarmos perto dos principais times nesses quesitos. Primeiro, temos que pensar na classificação, como foi no ano passado. Só depois, vamos focar a possibilidade de chegar à final. Vamos dar um passo de cada vez e tentar dar o máximo a cada partida”, indica o levantador e capitão do time, Demian Gonzalez. Estar entre os melhores times do mundo é motivo de orgulho e satisfação para os portenhos, que garantem não estarem satisfeitos apenas com uma mera participação. “Estamos bastante motivados e respeitando muito os adversários. Acho que temos um time ainda mais forte do que o do ano passado, porque estamos mais entrosados e nos conhecemos ainda melhor. Sabemos dos favoritos, do Sada Cruzeiro e do time russo, mas estamos indo para incomodar”, garante o levantador.

First, we need to think about the classifying rounds like last year. Only after that can we truly focus on the possibility of making it to the final. We are going to take it step by step and give our all every game,” said the setter and captain, Demian Gonzales. em a mesma pretensão das grandes potências que estarão disputando o Mundial de Clubes, o Guaynabo Mets, de Porto Rico, será um dos times que tentarão surpreender os favoritos. O time da América Central chega após indicação da Confederação de Voleibol da América do Norte, Central e Caribe (Norceca), que viu no elenco um grande potencial após a melhor campanha na história da liga local. Foram 20 vitórias e quatro derrotas na fase de classificação, seguidas por 12 vitórias consecutivas nos play-offs, que lhe garantiram o título nacional. O oposto Jackson Rivera sabe da superioridade de equipes de países de mais tradição, mas também acredita na força dos seus companheiros para tentar mostrar que é possível incomodar os mais fortes. “Vamos com grandes expectativas. Temos que jogar o nosso máximo e também aproveitar a experiência da melhor forma possível. Acho que todos os que jogam têm a chance de ganhar o título. Estaremos ao lado dos melhores clubes do mundo, e nos honra fazer parte desse quadro”, avalia o jogador. A filosofia adotada pelo time, de pensar a cada jogo, segue a de grandes elencos e pode dar resultados, principalmente em um torneio de tiro curto, no qual é preciso ir no seu limite a cada oportunidade. “Nos últimos dois anos, conseguimos implantar essa ideia de foco total a cada partida para depois pensar mais na frente. A cada jogo, temos que jogar o nosso máximo. Só assim conseguiremos grandes coisas”, mostra Rivera.

Javier Gaspar será o responsável por comandar os Mets de Guaynabo em sua primeira participação no Mundial. O treinador está na equipe desde a temporada 2012/2013, quando assumiu a função após a saída do brasileiro Mauro Grasso. Gaspar era assistente de Grasso e não pensou duas vezes antes de aproveitar a oportunidade que surgiu em sua carreira. Depois de, na temporada de estreia, levar os Mets à final da liga porto-riquenha, Gaspar conseguiu melhorar a performance no ano seguinte, chegando a um título memorável, com uma campanha consistente, que rendeu indicação por parte da Norceca para a disputa do Mundial. Apesar da tranquilidade que aparenta do lado de fora da quadra, Gaspar exige muito de seus comandados e espera que o time jogue em seu melhor nível para tentar surpreender os principais concorrentes.
Quais são as expectativas para o Mundial? São as mesmas de todos os campeonatos em que entramos. Nosso principal objetivo é jogar no nosso limite, pelo maior tempo possível. Fazendo tudo o que pudermos dentro de quadra, os resultados virão de acordo com o que merecemos. Deixaremos que as vitórias apareçam se as circunstâncias permitirem. A falta de experiência internacional pode ser prejudicial? Como time, realmente não temos tanta rodagem fora do país. No entanto, temos jogadores que já jogaram em outras ligas, e essa aprendizagem deles pode ser útil no Mundial. Acredito que isso não será um problema durante a competição. O que pode ser considerado um bom resultado? Acredito que jogar cada partida dentro da nossa capacidade estará de bom tamanho. Temos totais condições para isso e iremos atrás dessa meta.

Javier Gaspar will be responsible for leading the Guaynabo Mets in his first participation in the Club World Championship. The coach is on the team since the 2012/2013 season, when he assumed the role after the departure of the Brazilian Mauro Grasso. Gaspar was Grasso’s assistant and did not think twice before taking advantage of the opportunity that came in his career. After, in his debut season, taking the Mets to the final of the Puerto Rican league, Gaspar was able to improve performance in the following year, reaching a memorable title with a consistent campaign, which rendered indication from part of Norceca to dispute Club World Championship. What are the expectations for the Club World Championship? They are the same for all the championships we participate in. Our main goal is to play within our limit, as long as possible. Doing everything we can on the court, the results will come according to what we deserve. We’ll let the victories appear if the circumstances permit. Can the lack of international experience be harmful? As a team, we really do not have much experience outside the country. However, we have players who have played in other leagues, and their learning can be useful during the Club World Championship. I believe that this will not be a problem during competition. What can be considered a good result? I believe that playing every match within our capacity is a good enough. We have total conditions for this and we will go after this goal. You will face, in the first phase, Sada Cruzeiro and Belogorie, from Russia. Any preferences? In fact, we would like to face both teams. It would be a great challenge for our team, and I’m sure we would evolve a lot after playing against such competitive teams.

Para ele, a tradição deixa claro que Sada Cruzeiro e Belogorie são os favoritos. Mesmo assim, algumas vitórias já são almejadas. “Não temos preferência de adversário e vamos encarar quem aparecer no nosso caminho. Tentaremos fazer o melhor a cada jogo e vamos em busca de beliscar alguns pontos”, projeta. Rivera ainda destaca que o coletivo é a princi-

e no ano passado o Esperance de Tunis, da Tunísia, bateu na trave no Campeonato Africano e deixou a vaga para o Mundial de Clubes com o também tunisiano Club Sport Sfaxien, desta vez, a equipe tratou de carimbar seu passaporte para o Brasil ao conquistar o título continental, o quarto de sua história. Para se tornar a segunda equipe da Tunísia a alcançar o feito de estar em um Mundial, o Esperance esteve frente a frente com o decacampeão africano Al-Ahly, do Egito, o maior vencedor do continente, e só precisou de três sets para ficar com o caneco, diante de sua torcida, no Olympic Hall. Desconhecido no cenário internacional, o clube apela para a tradição local. Seu elenco é formado basicamente por atletas do próprio país, seguindo o perfil da maioria dos clubes tunisianos. E na disputa do continental, pelo menos três atletas do Esperance foram destaques: Mehdi Bem Cheik, Ahmed Kadhi, Elyes Karamosly. O último é considerado o grande nome da final, que garantiu a vaga ao time. Sob o comando do técnico Foued Kamoun, o clube tem uma média de idade jovem e não tem jogadores muito altos. Kamoun foi contratado no ano de 2012 para substituir Mounir Gara, que não ganhou títulos à frente da equipe. Segundo a imprensa local, o primeiro desafio do atual treinador foi colocar o grupo em uma melhor forma física, e o mesmo deve se repetir para a disputa do Mundial. Com um grande trabalho, Kamoun já colheu os primeiros frutos e, já na temporada 2012/2013, o time se tornou campeão da Copa da Tunísia.

Unlike last year with their close defeat to Sport Sfaxien (Tunisia) in the African Championship, Esperance stamped its passport to Brazil by winning the fourth continental title in its history. To become the second Tunisian team to make it to the Club World Championship, Esperance had to go face to face with Egypt’s Ahly, the team with the most wins on the continent, for three sets in front of their fans in Olympic Hall. Not being well known in the international scene, the club appeals to local tradition. The team is formed mostly by players from its own country, something that is true of the majority of Tunisian clubs. In the African competition, three players stood out: Mehdi Bem Cheik, Ahmed Kadhi, and Elyes Karamosly. The latter is considered the MVP of the final that guaranteed the teams opening in the international competition. According to the coach Foued Kamoun, the median age of the team is quite young and it doesn’t have many tall players. Kamoun was hired in 2012 to substitute for Mounir Gara who didn’t win any titles leading the team. According to the local press, the first challenge of the current trainer was to get the group in better shape, which will be an ongoing challenge for the Club World Championship. Kamoun has already harvested the first fruits of his labors by winning the 2012/2013 Tunisian Cup.

esmo em um continente com pouco espaço para estrangeiros, o brasileiro Renato Adornelas se arriscou e passou uma temporada no Nadi Riadhi Bordj Bou, da Argélia. O atleta esteve na África na temporada 2012/2013, quando teve dificuldade para se adaptar ao estilo ainda amador do voleibol local e chegou a enfrentar o Esperance de Tunis em uma oportunidade. Experiente, Renato já está com 34 anos e conhece um pouco do voleibol de muitos países. O jogador atuou em dois times pelo Brasil e passou por Espanha, Chipre, Turquia, Irã e Argélia, até chegar a sua terceira passagem pela Argentina. De volta ao vôlei sul-americano – Adornelas hoje defende as cores do argentino Boca Juniors –, o oposto vê uma grande diferença entre a modalidade praticada pelos africanos em relação aos europeus e brasileiros. Se o Brasil é reconhecido por ter um grande domínio da técnica além de uma boa forma física, o brasiliense aponta como característica da Tunísia uma grande força física.

Como foi sua passagem pelo vôlei argelino? Foi uma passagem muito difícil. Quando cheguei, a equipe já estava na metade da temporada, nem pude fazer uma pré-temporada. Além disso, tive problemas com o nível do clube, que era totalmente amador. Para completar, saí sem receber quase nada do meu contrato.
How was your switch to Algerian volleyball? It was pretty difficult. When I arrived I didn’t get any pre-season practice because the team was already in the middle of the season. Beyond that, I had problems with the club’s skill level, which was completely amateur. To finish it off, I left without receiving almost anything from my contract.
O que você conhece do Esperance da Tunísia? Joguei uma Copa da África contra o Esperance. Eles têm uma equipe boa, são os atuais campeões africanos, mas ainda estão muito longe do nível de Sada Cruzeiro, Belgorod e UPCN. O nível das demais equipes do Mundial de Clubes é muito maior. Que característica é marcante no estilo de jogo dos africanos, e quais são as diferenças para o voleibol brasileiro? A principal característica do vôlei africano é a força física, mas eles sofrem muito com a carência técnica, enquanto as equipes brasileiras são muito fortes física e tecnicamente.

What do you know about Esperance? I played in an African Cup against Esperance. They have a good team, they are the current African champions, but they are far from Sada Cruzeiro, Belgorod and UPCN. The level of the best teams in the Club World Championship is much higher. What characteristic stands out most in regards to the African style of play and what are the main differences when compared with Brazilian volleyball? The main characteristic of African volleyball is the physical strength, but they suffer from a lack of technique, while Brazilian teams are strong both physically and technically. What is your opinion regarding the different clubs that will compete in the Club World Championship? There are a lot of strong teams. I think that Sada and Belgorod are the strongest. UPCN, in my opinion, lags behind them but also has the potential to surprise us. Without a doubt, it’s going to be a great competition.

inda com pouca representabilidade no mundo, o vôlei na África pode ser considerado jovem se comparado ao praticado em continentes como Europa e Américas. A Confederação Africana de Voleibol (CAVB) só foi criada em 1972, ano em que a Federação Internacional de Vôlei (FIVB) resolveu transformar as confederações continentais, substituindo as comissões por zonas. A maior prática da modalidade no local ainda é amadora, mesmo com os esforços de alguns países para profissionalizá-lo, como o Egito, que é sede da CAVB por ter a federação mais antiga vinculada à continental. Os egípcios são conhecidos na região africana pela supremacia nas competições masculinas, ao lado da Tunísia, que tem apresentado um grande crescimento no esporte. Em todos os campeonatos masculinos já realizados, os tunisianos levam vantagem em medalhas: são oito de ouro, seis de prata e duas de bronze, contra sete ouros, cinco pratas e dois bronzes do Egito. No feminino, Quênia e Nigéria também fazem pressão, sendo que a primeira nação é tida como a dominante. Because it still lacks global recognition, African volleyball may be considered relatively new when compared to its European and American counterparts. The African Volleyball Confederation (CAVB) was created in 1972, the year that the International Volleyball Federation decided to make the confederations continental substituting the commissions for zones. The majority of the volleyball in the area is still amateur, despite efforts from a few countries, such as Egypt, which is home to the CAVB headquarters, to professionalize it. Egyptians are known in the African region for their superiority in male competitions, while Tunisia has showed great growth in the sport. In all of the male championships thus far, Tunisians have the advantage as far as medals go: 8 gold, 6 silver and 2 bronze, against Egypt’s 7 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze. In women’s volleyball, Kenya and Nigeria are also key players, the former being the stronger of the two. South Africa is also growing and is looking forward to the upcoming Olympics.

Irã volta ao Brasil nesta temporada do Mundial com um representante bastante ofensivo. Comandado pelo italiano Daniele Bagnoli, o Matin Varamin derrotou o Al-Rayyan (QAT) na final do campeonato asiático e chega à América com status para brigar ao menos por uma medalha de bronze. O clube tem um grande investimento e atletas que são da seleção iraniana, a décima segunda melhor do mundo, segundo o ranking da Federação Internacional de Vôlei (FIVB). O levantador Saied Marouf, por exemplo, é considerado o “cérebro” da equipe de Varamin e assume o cargo de capitão do time nacional. O central Seyed Mohammad Mousavi e o oposto Shahram Mahmoudi, que estavam no Kalleh, clube que disputou o Mundial em 2013, também defendem a seleção e estão agora no Matin Varamin. Mahmoudi e Mousavi receberam os prêmios individuais de melhores em suas posições do campeonato. O outro central, Sharifat Mostafa, também foi premiado, completando a trinca de melhores atletas da equipe. Iran returns to Brazil for this Club World Championship with a fairly offensive representative. Commanded by the Italian Daniele Bagnoli, Matin Varamin defeated Al-Rayyan (QAT) in the Asian Championship final and is coming to America with status to fight for at least a bronze medal. The club receives a large amount of investments and has athletes from the Iranian national team, the twelfth best in the world, according to the ranking of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB). The setter Saied Marouf, for example, is considered the “brain” of the Varamin team and takes over as the captain of the national team. The centre Seyed Mohammad Mousavi and the opposite Shahram Mahmoudi play for Kalleh, a club that participated in the Club World Championship 2013, also defend the team and are now playing for Matin Varamin. Mahmoudi and Mousavi received individual awards for top positions in the league. The other centre, Sharifat Mostafa, was also awarded, thus completing the top three athletes of the team. O que devemos esperar do Matin Varamin? O Matin Varamin é uma equipe como o Sada, pois o maior diferencial está no levantador. Saied Marouf é o levantador e o capitão da seleção do Irã. Muito bom jogador. Habilidade e precisão, na minha opinião, são suas maiores qualidades. Quais são as características da equipe, de forma geral? Eles têm dois ótimos centrais, fortes, e bons atacantes. Com o Saied Marouf, eles se tornam peças fundamentais na equipe. Tem bons jogadores nas extremidades, que jogam atacando bolas muito rápidas nas pontas. Eu acredito que esta é a arma do Matin Varamin: velocidade. E o levantador com a qualidade do Saied Marouf é quem possibilita esse sistema de jogo. Então a equipe chega com chances de fazer frente aos times que são considerados favoritos, como o Sada, o Belogorie e o Trentino? Eu não diria que o Matin Varamin é favorito, mas digo que pode surpreender. É uma equipe boa, com bons jogadores, que têm experiência internacional. Além de ter um levantador muito bom, que certamente é o diferencial da equipe.

The Brazilian Rômulo Batista (Sughy) knows some of the teams which will compete in this year’s Club World Championship. The pointer began his career playing in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte, when the “celestes” were still called Sada Betim. He even played at UPCN (Argentina), before leaving America and going to the Arab world. He played in Kuwait, Iraq, and defended, in this last season, the Iranian Shardari Zahedan, who competed national championship along with Matin Varamin. Therefore, Sughy knows very well the Asian champions’ game style. For him, the team could be compared to Sada Cruzeiro in the Arab world. As the setter William does at Cruzeiro, Saied Marouf is the head of the team and is also a starter for the Iranian national team. In addition, the group still has a great offense and a good net centre.
What should we expect from Varamin Matin? We could compare Varamin Matin to Sada, since the main strength of both teams is in the setter. Saied Marouf is the setter and captain of the national team of Iran. He is a very good player. Skill and precision, in my opinion, are his greatest strengths. What are the characteristics of the team in general? It has two great centres, strong, and good hitters. With Saied Marouf, they become fundamental pieces in the team. It has good players on the side, who play attacking very fast balls on the sides. I believe this is the weapon of Varamin Matin: speed. And the setter with the quality of Saied Marouf is who allows this game system. Then, the team arrives with chances to face the teams that are considered favorites, such as Sada, Belogorie and Trentino? I would not say that Matin Varamin is the favorite, but I say that it may surprise. It is a good team with good players who have international experience. Besides having a very good setter, which certainly is the differential of the team.

Agora, após uma longa temporada para criar entrosamento, o Trentino também traz como trunfo o fato de ter menos problemas de lesões. “Vamos ao Brasil para conquistar o melhor resultado. Sabemos que o campeonato será mais difícil do que da última vez, mas para nós é importante para mudar o final ruim de temporada. Na maior parte deste ano, tivemos problemas físicos, e agora tudo está bem. Queremos outra medalha para nossa equipe”, explicou o ponteiro Filippo Lanza. Os italianos, comandados pelo técnico Roberto Serniotti, apostam no sucesso de Lanza, do português Alexandre Ferreira e do búlgaro Tsvetan Sokolov, destaques durante a disputa da Liga dos Campeões, para atingir um resultado ainda melhor neste ano. Curiosamente, na competição europeia, o grupo foi eliminado nas quartas de final justamente pelos campeões, o Belogorie Belgorod, e terminou em quinto lugar. A bronze medal achieved in the last Club World Championship edition was a great achievement to the Diatec Trentino, honor guest for this year’s competition. Now, after a long season creating rapport, Trentino also brings as triumph the fact of having less injury problems. “We are going to Brazil to get the best result. We know that the tournament will be more difficult than the last one, but for us it is important in order to change the bad ending of the season. In most part of this year, we had physical problems, and now all is well. We want another medal for our team”, explained the pointer Filippo Lanza. The Italians, commanded by the couch Roberto Serniotti, bet on the success of Lanza, of the Portuguese Alexandre Ferreira and of the Bulgarian Tsvetan Sokolov, highlights during a dispute of the Champions League, in order to obtain an even better outcome this year. Interestingly, in the European competition, the group was eliminated in the quarterfinals precisely by the champions, the Belogorie Belgorod, and ended up in the fifth place. A possible rematch between the two teams, in fact, motivates the Trentino’s players. “For us it is a great opportunity for a rematch against Belgorod”, highlighted Lanza. And in order to overcome this season, the European club awaits to repeat at least the success of last season’s fans.

ecentemente aposentado das quadras, o campeão olímpico André Heller ainda mantém um carinho especial pela equipe do Trentino, na qual atuou de 2004 a 2007, logo após conquistar a medalha dourada nas Olimpíadas de Atenas, com a seleção brasileira. Amigo do presidente da equipe, Diego Mosna, o ex-central acredita que o grupo terá bastante dificuldade para enfrentar os russos e o Sada Cruzeiro. Uma das justificativas, segundo ele, é a crise financeira vivida pela Itália, que comprometeu os investimentos na modalidade, apesar de o campeonato nacional ainda ter um nível melhor que o brasileiro. André não teve passagens pelo voleibol russo, mas considera que, hoje, é o principal polo do esporte no mundo, tendo italianos e brasileiros como opções para ocupar o segundo lugar.
O que você recorda de sua passagem pelo Trentino? Foi uma passagem muito boa. Cheguei lá depois do título olímpico, em 2004, e foi muito bacana. É um time muito bem estruturado, tem uma torcida mais que apaixonada, exigente. Eu fiz certa amizade com o presidente, Diego Mosna, e mais do que isso, fiz amizade com toda a família. No ano passado a equipe que veio para o Mundial havia sido renovada recentemente e não teve tanto sucesso. Agora, que estão mais entrosados, ficarão mais fortes? É um ótimo time, mas não como aquele que ganhou o Mundial nos anos anteriores. Não vejo nesse time, por exemplo, uma possibilidade de ganhar do Sada Cruzeiro. Mas é um ótimo grupo, e obviamente o jogo será decidido dentro da quadra. O vôlei italiano continua sendo o mais tradicional do mundo? Não tenho vivência do campeonato russo, mas, pelo que tenho acompanhado, em nível técnico, a Rússia superou. Houve a queda até pela crise econômica que a Itália vive. Nem para os brasileiros o mercado italiano está tão atraente, apesar de ser melhor que o do Brasil.
Recently retired from the court, the Olympic champion André Heller still maintains a tender love toward the Trentino team, where we played at from 2004 to 2007, right after conquering a gold medal in the Olympics of Athens, with the Brazilian national team. Friend of the team’s president, Diego Mosna, the former centre believes that the group will have a lot of difficulties facing the Russians and Sada Cruzeiro. One of the reasons, according to him, is the financial crises experienced in Italy, which compromised the investment in the sport, even though its national tournament still has a higher level that the Brazilian one. André didn’t play in the Russian volleyball, but he considers that, today, it is the world’s greatest centre for the sport; with the Italians and the Brazilians as options to occupying the second place.
What do you remember of your time in Trentino? It was a very good experience. I got there after the Olympic title in 2004, and it was very nice. It is a very well structured team, whose fans more than passionate are demanding. I became friend of the president, Diego Mosna, and more than that, I became friend of the whole family. Last year the team that came to the Club World Championship had been recently renewed and it wasn’t very successful. Now, their rapport is greater, will they be stronger? It’s a great team, but not as much as the one that won the World title in the previous years. I don’t see in this team, for example, the possibility of beating Sada Cruzeiro. But it is a great group and obviously the game will be decided within the court. Does the Italian volleyball remain the most traditional of the world? I didn’t experience the Russian tournament, but from what I have been seeing, in regards to the technical level, the Russian one is greater. There was a drop thanks to the economic crises that Italy faces. Not even for the Brazilians the Italian market is that attractive, even though still better than the Brazilian one.

E o jogador tem dado conta do recado. Com a equipe principal da Itália, Lanza já foi bronze na última Liga Mundial e medalha de prata no campeonato europeu em 2013. No Brasil, no último ano, fez grandes jogos e ganhou torcida própria dentro do ginásio Divino Braga. Filippo busca inspiração para seguir sua carreira em um ídolo bastante conhecido no Brasil: Giba. levantador Giacomo Sintini já tinha uma carreira sólida no vôlei quando foi diagnosticado com leucemia, há três anos. Jack, como é conhecido, estava com 32 anos, e para muitos poderia ser o fim da vida de atleta. A vontade de continuar nas quadras, porém, ajudou o levantador a lutar e não desistir. O jogador do Trentino se apegou à família e à fé para enfrentar a doença, passou por duras sessões de quimioterapia, e hoje, três anos depois, ajuda muitas pessoas que passam por problemas semelhantes. “Muitas coisas me ajudaram a lutar contra o câncer: família, minha esposa, minha filha, fé em Deus, orações, meu desejo de não desistir, minha paixão pelo vôlei, confiança nos médicos e enfermeiros que cuidaram de mim. Eu gastei todos os meus recursos no tratamento de quimioterapia. Eu lutei, mas também tive sorte”, contou o atleta. A batalha não parou por aí. Sintini criou a Associação Giacomo Sintini. Os objetivos: mostrar às pessoas que essa é uma doença que pode ser curada e ajudar financeiramente pesquisas sobre leucemia e linfoma. Em dois anos, mais de € 150 mil foram arrecadados, e nos últimos três meses, o ritmo tem se mantido em € 10 mil a cada 30 dias. Colegas de equipe e outros jogadores de vôlei abraçaram a causa e contribuem com a meta da instituição. O atleta também lançou um livro intitulado “Força e Coragem”, logo após a conquista do Italiano, em 2012. Nele, Sintini conta sua história e incentiva a luta contra a enfermidade. “Depois da doença, eu passei a contar a minha história de luta contra o câncer. Eu faço isso porque tive um final feliz e acho que isso pode ajudar as pessoas que têm ou tiveram um problema como meu. Depois do campeonato, fui procurado por um editor italiano, que me pediu para escrever a história em um livro. Pensei que seria uma ótima ideia, já que alcançaria mais pessoas”, explicou o jogador.

Jack was 31 years old, and for many it could have been the end to an athletic career. The desire to continue on the court, however, helped the setter to fight and never give up. Trentino’s player relied on to his family and his faith to stand up to the disease, went through two rounds of chemotherapy, and today, three years later, helps many people who go through similar situations. “Many things have help my battle against cancer: family, my wife, my daughter, faith in God, prayers, my will to never give up, my passion for volleyball, trust in my doctors and nurses that took care of me. I spent all my energy and resources on chemotherapy. I fought and I as lucky”, said the athlete. The battle hasn’t stopped there. Sintini formed the Giacomo Sintini Association. Its objectives: to show people that this is a curable disease and to fund leukemia and lymphoma research. In two years, more than $200 thousand was raised and in the past three months, the pattern has been $14 thousand every thirty days. Teammates and other volleyball players have taken on the cause and contribute to the goal of the institution. The athlete also launched a book titled “Strength and Courage”, soon after the acquisition of the Italiano in 2012. In it, Sintini tells his story and encourages the fight against diseases. “After the illness, I started to tell my story of my fight against cancer. I do this because I have had a happy ending and I think this can help people who have or have had a similar problem. After the championship, an Italian editor sought me out and asked that I write my story. I thought it would be a great idea, to reach out to more people”, explained the player.

m dos candidatos a “azarão” do Mundial vem do Catar. O Al-Rayyan, de Doha, chega para o campeonato intercontinental depois de ficar com o segundo lugar no campeonato asiático. Com pouca tradição no esporte, o time do Oriente Médio, outro convidado para o Mundial, é marcado pelo grande investimento que realiza afim de tentar subir alguns degraus e diminuir a distância em relação aos times dos principais centros do mundo. A estrutura de alto nível pôde ser comprovada no Mundial de 2012, quando o time foi anfitrião do torneio que resultou no título do Trentino e no vice do Sada Cruzeiro. Na oportunidade, os mineiros fizeram sua estreia na competição, que lhe deu grande experiência para a edição seguinte, quando conquistou um título inédito para o vôlei brasileiro. Com uma seleção de nível amador, o jeito para tentar elevar o grupo do Al-Rayyan é contar com a presença de grandes estrelas. Um dos destaques do time é Yosleyder Cala, cubano naturalizado norte-americano com passagem por grandes times do mundo, como o Belchatow (POL). O líbero Sulaiman Said também foi eleito o melhor do campeonato asiático. No Mundial de 2012, o time contava com muitos atletas estrangeiros, como o central brasileiro Rodrigão, além de Georgi e Valentin Bratoev, que defenderam a seleção da Bulgária nas Olimpíadas de Londres. A falta de entrosamento, porém, pesou, mas o quinto lugar ficou de bom tamanho, visto que os quatro primeiros colocados apresentaram uma qualidade bem superior.

One of the candidates the “underdog” in the Club World Championship comes from Qatar. Al-Rayyan, from Doha, comes to the intercontinental tournament after getting second place in the Asian championship. With little tradition in the sport, the Middle East team, is another guest in the Club World Championship, it is distinguished by large investment done in order to try improving some degrees and reducing the distance in relation to other teams from the main centres of the world. The high-level structure could be proven in the 2012 Club World Championship, when the team hosted the tournament that ended with the title of Trentino and vice of Sada Cruzeiro. On that occasion, the mineros made their debut in the competition, which gave them great experience for the next edition, when they won an unprecedented title for the Brazilian volleyball. With a selection of amateur level, the way to try to take the Al-Rayyan’s group is to rely on the presence of big stars. One of the highlights of the team is Yosleyder Cala, Cuban naturalized American with experience in large teams in the world, as Belchatow (POL). The libero Sulaiman Said has also been voted the best of the Asian championship. In the Club World Championship 2012, the team had many foreign athletes, as the Brazilian centre Rodrigão, besides Georgi and Valentin Bratoev, who defended the Bulgarian national team at the London Olympics. The lack of rapport, however, weighed, but the fifth place was a good size, since the top four teams were of superior quality.

casa cheia reflete o entrosamento entre torcida e Sada Cruzeiro. Nem mesmo o hino brasileiro passa imune ao fanatismo das arquibancadas: “a imagem do Cruzeiro resplandece” é o grito de guerra, mesmo quando o DJ já tirou o som. Ou, quando é no ginásio do Riacho, o trecho é abaixado propositalmente para se ouvir a voz dos torcedores. Não é fácil definir um perfil de torcida do Sada. Em sua maioria, são cruzeirenses, mas também há atleticanos. Os homens, que também ocupavam maior parte das cadeiras, agora as dividem quase meio a meio com as mulheres. Acostumadas a frequentar o Mineirão para acompanhar o futebol, muitas adotaram também o time das quadras – seja pelo esporte, pelo amor à Raposa ou até mesmo pelos jogadores. E quem observa de perto essa mudança de postura é o presidente do Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, Gilvan de Pinho Tavares, que tem na própria família um exemplo do novo comportamento feminino. “Temos a nossa torcida, e qualquer campeonato que for disputado pelo Cruzeiro ela apoia. Mas, além desse tipo de torcedor, o Cruzeiro também trouxe as pessoas que não torciam para o time de futebol, mas que gostam de vôlei, que é o público feminino. Eu fico impressionado o tanto que as mulheres passaram a ‘ficar cruzeirenses’ com tanto entusiasmo pelo futebol quanto pelo time de vôlei. Eu vejo lá na minha família. Chega a tal ponto que, em dia em que tem jogo do Sada Cruzeiro, ninguém sai, ninguém vai para a festa antes de acabar o jogo”, revela o dirigente celeste. No dia em que a equipe se sagrou bicampeã brasileira, em pleno ginásio do Mineirinho lotado, por exemplo, a presença do sexo feminino foi novamente evidente.

The full house reflects the link between the crowd and Sada Cruzeiro. Not even the Brazilian anthem is immune to fanaticism in the stands “the image of Cruzeiro shines” is the battle cry, even when the DJ kills the sound. When the game is at the Riacho gym, the volume of the passage is lowered to hear the voices of the fans. It’s not easy to define Sada’s followers. The majority root for Cruzeiro but there are some Atletico Mineiro fans as well. Men, who occupied the majority of the seats, are now dividing the stands almost 50/50 with women. Because they are used to going to the Mineirao to watch soccer many have embraced the volleyball team too, be it for the game, the love of the fox (Cruzeiro’s mascot), or for the players. Gilvan de Pinho Tavares, president of the Cruzeiro Sport Club, has seen this change from up close. “We have our fans which will support us during every competition that Cruzeiro competes in. But beyond our regular fans, Cruzeiro has also brought people who aren’t fans of the soccer team, like volleyball fans, which are primarily women. I’m impressed by how many women “become Cruzeirenses” because of their love of the soccer team as well as the volleyball team. I see this in my own family. It’s gotten to the point where when there is a Sada Cruzeiro game, nobody goes out or goes to parties before the game is over. On the day the team became the two-time champ in the packed Mineirinho, the increased presence of female fans was evident.
