2014 men’s Soccer Fact Book

In its fourth decade of Division I athletics, The Summit League offers 19 championship sports and has a combined enrollment of over 120,000 at nine institutions, including four located in top 60 U.S. metro populations and two landgrant universities. Member institutions include: Denver (University of Denver), Fort Wayne (Indiana UniversityPurdue University-Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana UniversityPurdue University-Indianapolis), North Dakota State University, Omaha (University of Nebraska Omaha), Oral Roberts University, the University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University and Western Illinois University. Previously known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League rebranded in 2007 and has since produced eight NCAA Champions, and over 85 All-Americans and 63 Academic All-America selections. Each year, approximately 3,000 student-athletes continue to raise the bar and help The Summit League reach exceptional success and development. Within the past four years alone, The Summit League has produced six NCAA Champions, accounting for more than half of its all-time total. That level of success also carries into the classroom with record high team recognition for NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) in 2013-14 and recent prestigious individual academic honors such as the Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship, Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Capital One Academic All-American of the Year. The Summit League also produces the highest quality in competition as evidenced by representation in the National Basketball Association (NBA), Major League Baseball (MLB), Major League Soccer (MLS), Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Professional Golf Association (PGA) in 2014.

Within the past decade, The Summit League has … • Achieved a final national ranking in eight different sports. • Won NCAA Regional Championships in two sports and advanced in five additional NCAA team championship tournaments. • Had 61 teams receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards (among top 10 percent of Academic Progress Rate (APR) in their sport) since 2010. • Totaled 50 teams with maximum/perfect APR scores in the past three years. • Crowned eight of the league’s 10 NCAA Champions since 2007 and won five NCAA national championships and six NCAA statistical titles in the past three years. HISTORY Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League recorded several transcendent moments that resonate on the national stage. While known as the Mid-Continent Conference, the league’s first two decades produced a pair of appearances in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament’s “Sweet 16” and the Women’s College World Series as well as three individual NCAA Track and Field Champions. Oral Roberts gave The Summit League its initial baseball regional crown and Super Regional appearance in 2006 and three years later, North Dakota State became the league’s first softball team to achieve the same feat. The 2008-09 season also saw South Dakota State’s women’s basketball team carry a national ranking throughout a majority of the year and cap its season with an NCAA Tournament first round victory. In 2014, North Dakota State gained the national spotlight with a victory in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Round of 64.

Throughout its history, The Summit League has produced 10 NCAA Championships, three Olympic medalists and numerous All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving and cross country. Several professional athletes and draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first round picks, a pair of NBA first round choices, and one WNBA selection. In addition, Summit Leaguers compete in the MLS, and on the PGA and LPGA Tours. Former Summit Leaguer Kevin Duckworth (NBA) was a two-time all-star during his professional career. To coincide with The Summit League’s 30th Anniversary Season in 2011-12, the league released a list of its Top 30 Distinguished Contributors from the Division I era as selected by a panel of voters from member schools and the media. Four individual NCAA champions and three Olympic medalists, along with four NBA players and two World Series Champions headlined The Summit League’s list of top student-athletes, coaches and administrators that was the jewel of the anniversary celebration. Included on the list where ORU alumni Andretti Bain, Dennis Bigley, Caleb Green, Prince Mumba, Krista Ragan, Jack Whitt and Ori Zuzic.

The newly constructed Denny Sanford Premier Center serves as the home for the Summit League’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments.

2014 men’s Soccer Fact Book MIKE CARTER

ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | 21ST SEASON To say Mike Carter had his work cut out for him when he accepted the director of athletics position at Oral Roberts University on Nov. 7, 1994, is quite an understatement. It was hard enough for Carter to leave a successful business and sports law practice to embark on a career change. But combined that with the fact ORU was just beginning its second year back to active NCAA Division I status with only three full-time support personnel and no conference affiliation, and his endeavor was even more challenging. However, more than 18 years later, it’s clear that Carter’s vision and guidance -- along with a strong commitment to athletics by the University -- has led the department to dramatic enhancements and unprecedented success. His leadership earned him the 2011-12 Division I Central Region Under Armour AD of the Year honors. Under Carter’s leadership, the department is now properly staffed with support personnel. During his tenure he has developed positions in athletic development, business administration, compliance, academic services, sports medicine, strength training, marketing and media relations. All of these support services have proven to be necessary for ORU to compete successfully in today’s world of Division I athletics. Across the board, each athletic program has thrived with Carter at the helm. That success can be traced directly to the fact that Carter has chosen outstanding coaches and administrators to lead the Golden Eagle athletic programs. Another key component in ORU’s recent athletic success was the acceptance into the Summit League (formerly the Mid-Continent Conference) on July 1, 1997. The formal announcement was made on Sept. 17, 1996, and came after years of hard work and dedication by Carter and University leaders. Beginning in 2012-13, Carter leads the Golden Eagles into a new age as the department moves from the Summit League into the Southland Conference.

76

While in the Summit League, the Golden Eagles were a perennial favorite for the league’s Commissioner’s Cup, awarded to the league’s best overall athletic department. ORU captured nine Cups in 15 years. Over the past 16 years the Golden Eagles have totaled 79 NCAA Tournament appearances and two NIT appearances, two WNIT appearances, 84 All-America selections, and four Olympians. In 2008, track & field athlete Andretti Bain became ORU’s first national champion in any sport when he captured NCAA titles in both the indoor and outdoor 400 meters. Bain went on to win a silver medal at the Beijing Olympics as part of the Bahamian 4x400 meter relay team. Pole vaulter Jack Whitt became the second National Champion, winning the 2012 Outdoor Pole Vault Championship. ORU’s athletic success hasn’t just been limited to wins on the field. The Golden Eagles have been extremely successful in the classroom as well, earning an overall GPA of 3.0 or better in 15 out of the last 16 years. Part of the reason for those honors was Carter’s creation of the Eli Academic Learning Center, one of the many facility upgrades he has directed. Others include the construction and/or improvement of the volleyball, baseball, basketball and soccer facilities. New locker rooms, playing surfaces, sound systems, signage, and additional seating have assured ORU that its athletic facilities can rival most NCAA Division I universities.

@orumsoc

2014 men’s Soccer fact book Yet, Carter isn’t resting on his laurels. New men’s and women’s basketball locker rooms, women’s basketball offices and a sports medicine facility in the Mabee Center have been constructed. ORU opened the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in 2006, a multipurpose facility located at J.L. Johnson Stadium which features a 2,500-square foot strength and conditioning center; the Grand Slam Room; and new offices for the baseball coaching staff. A 35,000-square foot indoor practice facility opened as part of the Golden Eagle Sports Complex in the summer of 2009. The Mabee Center basketball arena received a new state-of-the-art video scoreboard in the fall of 2008. All of these enhancements have been made in an effort to maintain ORU’s athletic success, and advance to the next level in the near future. Carter and his wife, Paula have two grown children, Lizz and Cason, and two grandchildren. They are also the parents of late son, Scott, who died in December 1993 of childhood cancer.
