Client Rhiannon is a trained culinary professional and baker. From a young age she had a passion for feeding people, sharing her love for others through great food. After
graduating with a degree in the Culinary Arts from Grossmont College, in San Diego, CA, she spent time working for a bakery in her home town of El Cajon, CA. However, after suffering serious back injuries, she decided it was time to bring her work home.
Running her new business out of her own kitchen, Rhiannon offers a wide variety of
event services and catering. She specializes in baked goods including cakes, cookies, cake-pops, cup-cakes, and chocolate-covered strawberries. It is her hope to use this opportunity to rebrand herself with a business cabinet, responsive, updateable WordPress website, and possibly new packaging.

Project Concept Rhiannon brought her own inspiration to the design consultation. The project began
with a new logo design based on that inspiration, and current logo typeface, then the focus shifted to incorporating it into a new WordPress website, business cabinet, and potentially a new line of packaging elements.
The goal is to, first and foremost, promote the baking services Rhiannon offers and
then, secondarily, event planning and decorating. It is important to really showcase her work visually while also providing a professional ‘storefront’ feel that evokes a feeling of enjoying sweet bakery confections. It will be important to use a variety of photography and graphic elements, soft, warm, fresh colors, and a hint of playfulness.

Comparitive Analysis Flour Power Cakery
Flour Power Cakery offers a very modern style and a soft, professional feel. Probably one of Rhiannon’s most powerful competitors, they offer many of the same services and have a long standing reputation in the comunity. Because they are an actual
storefront bakery, and they have a professional online presence, it will be important for Rhiannon to have an online storefront that is strongly competitive with them.

Comparitive Analysis Grove Pastry Shop
Grove Pastry Shop is another well established storefront bakery in the Lemon Grove, CA area. However, they do not have a very strong web presence, as their website feels
dated in style and sports a muddy color scheme. Their custom logo gets lost and their photo slideshow does not take full advantage of the website’s above-the-fold real
estate. Rhiannon has an opportunity to capture the attention of Grove Pastry patrons with a strong, fresh, playful brand design and website.

While this bakery offers galleries full of extraordinary photos of their work, their website and brand are completely without design aesthetic. They have no logo to speak of and their web and print design have no consistency. This is another great opportunity for
Rhiannon to establish her brand through web and graphic design to stand apart/above her competition in order to create growth for her business and reputation.

Analysis By using a color palette that is enticingly delicious and tastefully appealing, Rhiannon
can gain a strong foothold in the baking and event planning industry in her local area. Re-creating her brand with a new logo and theme that speak to her skills and

User Persona #1 Adrienne Age: 38 Occupation: Part-time retail, full-time mom Education: 2 years Community College Homelife: Lives in the suburbs with her husband, a real estate agent, and thier three little boys.
Background: She is the mother of three boys and is married to a man who makes a decent living in Real Estate. She works part time, at a local dress shop, while her kids are in school. She also spends many of her weekends and evenings chaufeurring her boys to-and-from their respective extra-curricular activities. Current Situation: Adrienne is the Maid of Honor in her youngest sister’s wedding this June. It is her responsibility to throw the Bridal Shower in honor of her sister. She adores her little sister but is highly stressed-out with all her matronly responsibilities. Is Looking for: Specifically, Adrienne wants her experience with her caterer to be simple and quick. She wants to surprise her sister with a custom cake and goodies for her Bridal Shower. She needs to be able to communicate the party’s theme to someone with experience in such matters, and feel content that the caterer will provide exceptional quality desserts with a minimum of fuss and a can-do attitude.

User Persona #2 - Lindsay Age: 24 Occupation: Assistant Producer - Local TV Station Education: Film school graduate Homelife: Lives with her fiance in thier downtown apartment.
Background: Lindsay and her husband do not have a lot of money, despite thier duel incomes and childless status as they are both working to pay off student loans and stay ahead of the standard cost of living. Current Situation: Lindsay has just become engaged to her college sweetheart. She has decided to throw a dinner party to surprise her friends and family with the news of her engagement. While she wants to do the meal herself, she was hoping to find someone to provide dessert. Is Looking for: She has been referred by a friend to Rhiannon’s Delights and would like to give her a try. She also intends to serve a chilled, sparkling, white wine and is interested in hearing ideas for desserts she might serve. She is looking for a caterer who is willing to do the prep work on site and create decorative presentation for serving, but who is also willing to work with her rather conservative budget.

User Persona #3 - Lynn Age: She’s not telling Occupation: Receptionist for an Accountant Education: BA in Medieval Literalture Homelife: Lives by herself in her own home in a small neighborhood.
Background: Lynn is an active widow whose children are both grown and on their own. She is active in her church as well as in her community. She has a full time job as the receptionist for an Accountant with whom she’s worked for many years. Lynn is good humored, extremely sharp, and considered by her friends to be a power to be reckoned with when she is on a mission. Current Situation: Lynn is currently in charge of arranging a mother-daughter tea which is an annual church function. She is chair of a small commitee and takes her responsibilities seriously. She is very organized and has delagated to others the tasks of finding a location, collection of tables, chairs, other neccesities, and printing up of flyers and advertising materials. Is Looking for: Lynn will be taking on the arrangement of food. While she prefers to call on certain members of the church to help with provisions, she does have a small budget for the tea which she intends to use on the purchase of a catered dessert. User Persona #4 - Morgan Age: 43 Occupation: Event Planner Education: High School Homelife: Lives by himself in an upper class condominium with his black lab pup.
Background: Morgan is an event planner working in a small firm developed with a group of friends, as a partnership. Morgan considers himself to be up-to-date on all the latest fashions and market trends and thoroughly enjoys his job. He works with a wide variety of clientele, but prefers weddings and corporate dinner parties over other types of event. He uses a number of different caterers for these events depending upon the client’s needs. Current Situation: He is currently working a wedding reception where the colors are red, lavender, and white and the bride is allergic to peanuts, eggs, and refined sugar. His current dessert caterer is in the Bahamas on vacation. Is Looking for: Morgan needs a new caterer who can incorporate foods within the color scheme and who is sensitive to her allergies. Client Needs Rhiannon needs a brand & website developed to spark the curiosity of her target
audience and encourage them to contact her for a free consultation. She needs a way to display her amazing work, share testimonials, and get her name out there in the
community. Rhiannon needs to let her audience know that she is able to keep costs
down, by keeping her storefront online, and yet providing the same quality product that they might find at any of her competitor’s storefront bakeries.
Market Needs Rhiannon currently has some powerful competition in the east San Diego area. There
is, however, a place for her in the market right now. There are a large number of people who want excellent baked goods without the high price tag. Additionally, in difficult
economic times, there is a rise in social events as people gather to support each other and to celebrate life. This portion of the market is ripe for a home-based catering business to provide guidance and great food for their events.

Research Rhiannon’s current WordPress website has it’s basic framework set up, but it is in need of a design and logo. While she brought her own inspirational elements to the table, it
was also important to reseach other successful bakeries to discover the elements which were most successful in communicating to the target audience.

Palette & Type While Rhiannon brought an existing typeface with her, it was important to find complimentary typefaces for headline and body copy.
Additionally, inspired in part by Rhiannon’s desired style and color elements and partly
by the successful web designs uncovered during the research, a broad color palette was explored. Color was also brought in through the use of patterns as well.
