BG Magazine is independent and it does not publish conflicting opinions with the ideal of the magazine nor even for all Lindens in the world. When we speak well, we are good. When we speak ill of, we are the best!

Are you surprised to see us naked? As a fashionista, this is hommage to Yves Saint Laurent, one of my fashion idols, who gave to us, women, the male wardrobe to explore, adapt and use in our daily life with elegance, charm, and no much questioning. And, if you remember well, he made a series of photos absolutely naked, using only his fabulous squared glasses. He left us, but his legacy is a forever classic style – that we use even in the metaverse. But we are not here just for this. Take a look at Alyne’s text, right there, and see that is not only a hommage that undresses us so easily‌. Lucrecia Slade

editorial Sometimes I imagine if I would have the courage to take half the shots I make with my avatar, and the answer is: “absolutely not”. But I don’t see any problem in to undress my avatar, because, at last, it’s my imaginary representation. Is just for it that I don’t get understand some postures of Linden Lab related to avatars. This issue was in its first planning just to talk about the relations between real and second lives, but it became a lampoon against censorship in SL. It’s not fault of exhibitors, or of organizers… Rules come from above and say: PG 13 – no nipples. Nipples? Omg, who never saw a nipple? Our first kiss was in a nipple, which nurtured us when we were just babies! What is the problem with them, Linden fellows? We are not here to say what can or not, but if Lucrecia proposed to pose naked as homage to YSL, I agreed just to show to Linden Lab guys at least one of my nipples… I owe this to all who suffered censorship. As I always say: if I want to be a Bad Girl, I must be provocative. ;) Good lecture! Alyne Dagger

Bad Girls interview / Prad Prathivi

No

LIMITS for CREATION Interviewing Prad Prathivi was more than just to know a builder, manager, photographer, producer, DJ, “priest”.... Behind many talents and so much hard work, there is an extremely gentle and creative young man, that received the Bad Girls in his home for this interview – and we had to cut around a ton of laughs from it. Do like us: have fun with Prad!

Bad Girls interview / Prad Prathivi Lucrecia Slade: The basics:

why, when, how, where...

etc, did u came here? Prad Prathivi: I came here in September 2006 after reading about Second Life in a BBC News article about a credit card security breach.I read the article and learnt it was about a virtual world, which looked interesting, so I installed SL, signed up and had a look around. I think I spent about 3 hours making the shape of my avatar, lol. And then I didn’t log in again for 2 weeks! Lucrecia Slade: You too?????? Alyne, I’m normal! Prad Prathivi: heehee Alyne Dagger: everybody does this, to be still a noobie, lol Prad Prathivi: Well oddly, I still have the same shape today. I based my shape on my RL body, So not much has changed =)

Alyne Dagger: I did not change my shape too, still the

same with some modifications Prad Prathivi: Once you have it right, it’s right.. ;) Alyne Dagger: my nose as big as in rl :) Alyne Dagger: prad, this month we are talking about slXrl interaction. Does sl improve or mess your life? Is SL an addiction or something that helps you? Prad Prathivi: SL definately helps me. In RL, I’m an architect, and SL gives me a platform to try out my ideas Lucrecia Slade: This is impressive. Your style is well known Prad Prathivi: : Without the constraints of RL.. I don’t worry about material costs here, or other factors, Sometimes, I don’t even worry about gravity. SL allows my mind to go wild with ideas and let me try anything, which is good when it comes to helping

Prad’s House

me design in RL. But I’ve learnt a lot of skills from SL too, which I can apply in RL. For example, social networking is one of the most useful skills I’ve learnt

architecture, photography, music.... How do they mix in your job and/or real life? Prad Prathivi: The boundaries also include owning

Alyne Dagger: Have you ever tryed to do a “pilot

my own bar, runing large scale events, and making clothes.. ;) I see SL about making friends, and also learning skills. Oh, and I make machinima.. SL movies too) Alyne Dagger: he is not an avatar, he is a shopping center!!!! LOL! Prad Prathivi: Oh, and I’ve also started making poses and animations) Lucrecia Slade: jesus, prad! XD Prad Prathivi: LOL! Alyne Dagger: Just kidding! Lucrecia Slade: this man doesn’t stop! Prad Prathivi: I don’t believe in limiting myself Alyne Dagger: How many hours you stay connected every day? Prad Prathivi: I’m usually online for about 6-8 hours a day, although I often leave my avatar in world to stop my IMs from capping. I’m quite young, and I manage fine on 5 hours sleep a night, so I can get a lot done in both worlds. (Here Alyne asked his age, but promised not to publish. But you can know: he is really very young!) Lucrecia Slade: this urge for creation.... You can define it as your “tag”? Prad Prathivi: I love to create.. moreso, I love to see other people enjoying my creations and I like to

building” here for do the same in the rl? Prad Prathivi: yes, I have - I’ve rented a sim a few times to try RL projects out here, I then get the client to look around the build and get their feedback. SL is a lot more powerful than normal 3D modelling software, because of the “avatar”. A client can interact with a building, and give me feedback Lucrecia Slade: and in this case... Alyne Dagger: that is a good idea for sl practical use Prad Prathivi: It is - SL can take over your life though, I do agree. It’s a very powerful platform, and when I joined, I set strict which I keep to. That way, I have a balanced RL and SL Lucrecia Slade: I see in your Flickr and blog that you are a prolific image maker. Prad Prathivi: I only got into photoshopping and making my own art a few months ago Alyne Dagger: I love to do sl photo with pile ups :) Prad Prathivi: I’ve been a Flickr member for over a year now, but only used to use it to upload my SL snapshots. Then, Joshua Morane left a comment on my Flickr stream, and out of curiosity, I had a look at his work, and was blown away. That inspired me to try it out myself Lucrecia Slade: These boundaries between arts,

understood in the masses of SL Lucrecia Slade: yes, is very common she them all around (?) Alyne Dagger: The gorean I can really understand,

SL5B main Stage,Photo by Prad

innovate and try out new things. Lucrecia Slade: And you’ve build the bigger event of this month, the SL5B. How it began? Prad Prathivi: I was approached by the planning commitee for SL5B a couple of months ago. They’d seen my builds and they wanted to know if I’d be interested in building for them. They asked me to build the mainstage at this year’s SL5B, which will be used for Live music, and also a side stage, for live DJs. They’ve also asked me to DJ as well (Oh yeah - I DJ in SL too). Prad Prathivi: Also, they knew me from the club I own/run Alyne Dagger: How do you see the restrictions they made to children and gorean avatars to sl5b? Prad Prathivi: I wasn’t happy about it.. this year’s theme was “culture” and gorean and children are both part of SL’s culture. A lot of people don’t understand them. Both groups aren’t very well

people in the heads can be conservative, but CHILDREN? Prad Prathivi: And my own belief was that SL5B would be a great place for these groups to come and show the grid about their culture. A lot of people don’t understand children in SL.. my own personal thoughts are that I don’t mind children in SL, or interacting with them on a social level. But it’s not a role I’d play myself Alyne Dagger: Do you think that people who are doing the grid really understand the residents’ willings? (I myself have a child avatar - Samara, from “The ring”) Prad Prathivi: I think they’re just trying to protect the image of SL in the real world, but they’re denying people the true image of SL, and it’s cultural richness. That’s why I was unhappy at Linden Labs for their role in SL5B and restricting it. Thankfully, they’ve now lifted the exclusion and everyone is allowed to apply again Lucrecia Slade: some other cultures have been affected by this “censorship”? Prad Prathivi: Not that I was aware, no. As long as the exhibitions are PG, they’re being allowed Alyne Dagger: What is your “culture” in SL, so?

Prad Prathivi: My culture in SL? Alyne Dagger:

sure Lucrecia Slade: “who do you think you are?” XD Prad Prathivi: My culture is simply to be myself, and meet as many people I can, and to have fun. I’m a very social and extrovert person. I make friends and get on with people very easily. That said, I’m also a pretty private person and I keep a close circle of friends, and tend to keep out the public eye. Lucrecia Slade: curiously, this is very clear on your profile Prad Prathivi: This is actually the first interview I’ve given in 4 months, lol Alyne Dagger: : how many friends in your personal list? Prad Prathivi: Thousands, but most of them are “contacts” and not friends Alyne Dagger: Just like me: many people that I cant even remember Prad Prathivi: hehe Lucrecia Slade: real life is also like this, I think Prad Prathivi: Yes, it is. My friends are the people I first met in SL: They knew me before I even rezzed my first cube here! Alyne Dagger: Coming back to the rl x sl subject: Have you ever catch yourself thinking in rl like you were in sl? Like: wow, how many prims must have this building? Prad Prathivi: Haha! Oh wow.. The number of times

I’ve looked at a building and though “How could that be made in prims?” is scary! Alyne Dagger: : We (me and Lu) have a friend that counts prims all the time, it is true!!! Lucrecia Slade: Using his Palmtop. ¬¬ Prad Prathivi: I do think in prims and sketch in prims sometimes, but I don’t limit myself in that way. I believe I can make any idea I think of in SL. So usually I think first, and then think in prims after. The thing I love about SL most is I can be creative without limits… apart from the 15,000 prim limit, LOL. Lucrecia Slade: LOL! Prad Prathivi: Apart from that, I’m good ;) Prad Prathivi: Other than that though, I usually seperate SL and RL Alyne Dagger: Have you ever woke up in the morning andt thought: oh god, have to edit my appearance? Prad Prathivi: No, never =P Lucrecia Slade: how it’s working? this separation? Prad Prathivi: I’m still working out the best way to link the two, in terms of career.. SL has helped me develop skills like building, 3D design, Photoshop, making movies, etc, which I can use in RL. So I use some SL skills in RL, but I want to bring the two together and show how compatible they are… I have a very active RL though.. I design and I’m a keen sportsman too, so I keep a good balance Lucrecia Slade: I asked you because I think... there’s

Prad and the Bad Girls

two circumstances, but just one life. And you can choose what do u want to play in each one. or both Prad Prathivi: Yes, although you can only fall 500 metres and not care in one of them =) Lucrecia Slade: or make a tp to office when you wake up late.... Alyne Dagger: Now it is time for alyne’s embarassing questions ^^ Lucrecia Slade: tcharannnnn Prad Prathivi: LOL! Alyne Dagger: Have you ever fall in love or envolved somehow with another avatar? Prad Prathivi: heh, yes I have been involved with another avatar in SL Alyne Dagger: It was a good or a bad experience? Prad Prathivi: You meet a lot of people, and without the distractions of a physical appearance, you get to truly know someone. Good experience, definately Alyne Dagger: STILL a good experience? XD

Lucrecia Slade: gossip girl... Alyne Dagger:: You said I could, Lucrecia. :P Lucrecia Slade: >.< Prad Prathivi: LOL- I’m happy being single right now.

I have a lot of things in SL which keep me very busy. That said, I’m a natural flirt.. ;) Which has sometimes led to some awkward situations, LOL Alyne Dagger: SL sex is good for you? (yes, I am a monster) Prad Prathivi: (yes, you are!) Alyne Dagger: (but I dont bite - only if I am asked to do it) Prad Prathivi: SL sex is an intimate bond between two people, and I view it as so. That’s the best you’re getting out of me, there.. ;) Lucrecia Slade: hahahahahahhahaa Alyne Dagger: I have a theory: you can do anything with other people here, if the other person agrees with you.

Prad Prathivi: You can, but I also have a theory that

every avatar has a person in RL who carries those feelings with them long after their computer is turned off Alyne Dagger: Yes, you are right. The only thing I am really out to is have a SL baby. I hate SL babies (the prim ones). They are ugly, they are boring… and many couples I know had a baby and broke apart, putting the little monster in the inventory! Prad Prathivi: LOL- I’ve never had a baby.. I’m not sure how they work, lol Lucrecia Slade: it doesn’t match with you... I think.... XD Prad Prathivi: lol! Alyne Dagger: They work like a time bomb that explodes sl marriages and look awfull Prad Prathivi: I’ve never been married in SL either, lol. Although I have married together 5 couples Lucrecia Slade: wow! Are you a priest too????? Prad Prathivi: hehe. Yes, but only when friends ask me to Lucrecia Slade: he’s an octopus????????? XD Alyne Dagger: I work like a priest some times. so we are colleages Prad Prathivi: hahaha Prad Prathivi: I’m a colleage to a lot of people.. ;) Lucrecia Slade: he’s shiva! Dancing, and creating! Prad Prathivi: I’m a Jack of all Trades.. I love everything that I do, and a lot of people seem to

think I’m very good at what I do, so I keep doing it =) Alyne Dagger: But I can bet you dont look like Michael Jackson when you are a priest - I do Lucrecia Slade: (she looks like Jacko as a priest... really) Prad Prathivi: (lmao.. O.o ) You: I did LUCRECIA’S WEDDING Prad Prathivi: Hahaha - Niiice) Lucrecia Slade: It was the most absurd marriage ever made in SL You: It was when people finally stop to think we were a couple. XD (?) Prad Prathivi: LOL!!! Lucrecia Slade: hahahahahahahhahahaa [Alyne Dagger: When people asked I always said: but she is the guy, ok? Lucrecia Slade: ¬¬ Prad Prathivi: Hehe.. ;) ) Alyne Dagger: Any RL friend came to SL with you, Prad? Prad Prathivi: Nope - it’s just me here from RL, although I have met some SL friends in RL Alyne Dagger: I am asking because me and Lucrecia are RL friends Prad Prathivi: ahh cool =) Alyne Dagger: For long time - and no hope to tell you our age Prad Prathivi: ;)

Alyne Dagger:

You are excellent to chat, prad! Prad Prathivi: Ty - I rarely give interviews anymore, but I’m enjoying this =) Alyne Dagger: Ah, Have something to ask you, people always want to know: Where are you from, and where do you live Prad Prathivi: I’m from the South Coast of England, I live right by the ocean. I love the sea =) Nothing beats watching the sun set on the horizon of the sea, after a long day Alyne Dagger: You’d love rio, where we live Prad Prathivi: Oh I’d love Rio! =) Lucrecia Slade: In your profile you put a picture of you. Prad Prathivi: yes Lucrecia Slade: You don’t seem like a “traditional” Englishman. ^^ Indian parents? Prad Prathivi: Observant.. ;) Yes - my parents are originally from India. But I was born and raised in the UK Lucrecia Slade: and this multicultural experience (India, UK, lots of friends around the world in SL), how it works with Prad, the avatar? Prad Prathivi: It gives me a more clear understanding to be more sensitive to other people I meet and their own cultures. In RL, I learnt a lot of my morals and ethics from religion, although I’m not religious myself Lucrecia Slade: and Prad, the human being? Prad Prathivi: I’m Prad in SL and I am Prad in

RL.. I treat everyone with respect and openness. Sometimes people will try to take advantage of that, but I’m a good judge of character, and I can deal with it. Lucrecia Slade: Do you think this is the most

important thing to learn here, in metaverse? Prad Prathivi: To be happy. There’s no point in Second Life is you’re not enjoying it Alyne Dagger: Oh, how cute! Prad Prathivi: Too many people tell me they don’t like this or don’t like that.. but if you’re always complaining and unhappy with SL, then change it and make yourself happy, or don’t use it. I leant this a while back when I complained about men’s clothing in SL and someone said to me “Then why don’t you make it?” So I did Alyne Dagger: Men clothes are really not good in the most here Prad Prathivi: Nope - I’ve teamed up with a very talented fashion designer now called Adam Soler, and we work together to make high quality clothes. Alyne Dagger: Thank you so much for this amazing interview, Prad. You are a very talented and funny person, I can bet RL and SL too. Hope we can see more of your work around, more and more! Lucrecia Slade: Hope you had fun as much as we did with this interview! Prad Prathivi: Sure I did!

“Omg, this wall has 250 prims!” “This is texture, man!” This dialog – that makes all the sense in SL – happened in a pizza restaurant, in “real life”, not so long ago. The first guy got the strange habit of counting prims… of real buildings, using his palmtop. One of his funny opinions was that the ABL building (Brazilian Academy of Literature) would be constructed with 3 mega prims only and Rio de Janeiro’s downtown has the larger number of prims of the entire city. The other “avatar” who participates of the meeting, quickly joined him in the “game” and soon they start to count every prim they found in their RL meetings.

real, I am normal by Alyne Dagger

Why is harder to take apart real from virtual life

Cover article

To the ones who lives in the strict sense of reality, this surreal joke of mixing RL and SL may be considered a game for crazy people, but after the moment you got yourself immersed in a metaverse, you bring the real life to your avatar (as we said in BG Mag #3), and you bring to your daily life vocabulary and concepts that were born and are mostly appropriate to Second Life. Ease, man, you’re not a freak because you, one day, waked up feeling so bad about your appearance that you felt the urge for editing it! Kenno Letov, who suggested us this article, told that he asked in a fashion store if the clothes he was buying were copy and edit. He collects stories about using a topsy-turvy vocabulary between friends and him: “we share these hilarious stories”, he confess laughing. Like Kenno and his friends, every SL Resident can tell stories about interactions between real life and the virtual one, and how they can help or mess up each other. Of course, those who don’t understand a thing about Second Life thinks it’s pathetic someone let the “game” have an influence over his/her life, but the truth is: when we become “online people”, no matter if it’s a 2D or 3D environment, we began to interact with a new language and this info exchange give birth to a new vocabulary

and new ideas. Before SL arrives in Brazil, we had the example of Orkut. It influenced so much the lives of lots of Brazilians that a study of UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro) concluded that 90% from 44% of Brazilians with home computers has a profile in this social network. The Orkut site gave to the word “community” the meaning of “Internet Forum”, gave to Brazilian vocabulary the word “scrap”, referring to the little messages between friends, and was used in the funny pop music “Eu vou te excluir do meu Orkut” (I’ll delete you from my Orkut), of the Brazilian country musician Ewerton Assunção. It’s easy to understand that nobody interact with a new Internet tool without being influenced by it. But the influence of Second Life may be more powerful because of the avatar factor. For those “off-Second Life” this is considered “just a doll”, but for the heavy user it’s a tridimensional representation of his/her digital self, exploring a new world. Not only Second Life, but other MMOs environments have this massive influence. And is not the possibility of being the perfect beauty that provokes it, but its adaptability, the opportunity of being what you want to be. Second Life, in this matter, has numerous cool things like changing shape, color, ethnics, being human, being animal,

to fly – these endless variables, since real to surreal, shakes every imagination and creativity of everyone. Editing, interaction and customize start up a series of ideas that remains in the head even with the computer is off. You certainly passed by the experience of seeing a store window and think how cool the clothes would be in you – and in your avatar. Talking about avatars – it happened to me, that writes the Linden & Lag section – sometimes I see a person in the street or in the shopping center and I send immediately an SMS to Lucrecia: “omg, I’m in front a human lag!”, and the classic answer is: “Alyne, did you take your pills today”? And talking about lag, our Good Guy of the month, Marcello Winston, was trapped in a huge traffic jam and said: “omg, this traffic is completely lagged”! These are good examples of how a proper vocabulary for

Second Life begin to be used referring to things and events of real life. These are trivialities but Second Life can add serious things to real people’s lives. In a personal level, your avatar can influence your real self: there are cases which people decide to begin a diet, or improve personal attributes to resemble more and more their avatars. Or, in the other hand, try to make the avatar more similar to their real appearance. The new “Real Women” style of avatars is getting more popular and the Barbie model of avatars are slowly put aside. There are fatty, fleshy, small avies, far from the top model stereotype. This is the opinion of Seide Tripp, an American Resident from North Carolina. She has a Flickr account about Second Life and an avatar that resembles too much the real person behind

Cover article

it: “Well, I fell doing so helps me to have a positive RL perception of myself. I might make me appear more appealing to me in some way in SL. It’s about pleasing oneself and opening portals to self love, so that it reflects in your RL appearance. I have been doing this since I got in SL two years ago. I also in that time have slowly lost 30 pounds. The better I feel about me the better I look in rl everyday. :)))” Second Life increase communities and is natural that true friendship, started in-world, become part of real life’s people. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. group, owned by Marcello Winston, plans a meeting on real life and recently made a party where avatars pass him their real life photos, displayed on a panel, under agreement. An avatar don’t have to be a mask, may be an exact embodiment of who you do, even not resemble to you.

These photos: what are real, what are virtual?

Thundera Rau e Nikavet Mayo

Like friendship, is very common a romantic relationship migrate from SL to RL. This is the case of DJ Thundera Rau, who recently married Nikavet Mayo in Second Life. The couple is separated by almost 1,865 miles but swears that the relationship is true: “It is the love that came in the right time” – says Nikavet. “Thundera and me wants to meet in real life, not just to know each other, but to be together”. Thundera confirms this hope and say more: “I would not be married in Second Life if this could not be serious in real life”. They want to make a virtual family too, “to adopt a noobie and make him/ her grow up in-world. We want someone to play this ‘role’ and form a family here, as we want to have one in real life”. Thundera and Nika, as Stephen Venkman and Kimberly Mirabeau (we’ll talk about them later), are an example of people that take seriously the initiative of having a family in SL. This is very different from marry someone you knew yesterday only “because is cool”, or buy a pregnancy prim and walk around with a belly because your friends did the same. If the virtual relationship is not serious, even sign a partnership, nor buying a virtual baby, will turn it a “real thing”. To know the people behind the

avatar, step by step, is the secret to upgrade a virtual romance to a real one. In the case of family, relationships and more, we need to remark that even in a virtual space, when you make a bond with another person – as a familiar, partner, friend – we point that is necessary have some care about it. There are lots of positive aspects, but who see the avatar doesn’t see its heart. Don’t share your passwords, bank accounts, personal information, because dishonest people can use the avatar anonymities to take advantage over other people. We said this in BG #9 (Ethics). Remember that if someone really loves you, this person never come to you asking, with no reasons, your particular data. If you feel that is an abuse, report immediately. After all, Second Life is a media environment: people walking around in virtual world are exposed to every kind of information, and as we don’t know any restriction over it, companies from all corners of the planet begun to buy spaces and islands in the metaverse – and it’s not success guaranteed. As media, SL is still passing by some kind of validation, and the continuity of experiences as Bradesco Island (the most popular and bigger Brazilian private

bank), Fiat Brazil, Ferrari, IBM, SEBRAE (the Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises) and many other business oriented islands, shows that this is a tendency for the next years. Other initiatives, as religious and philosophical currents of many colors, are using Second Life to express its ideas. But the truth is that no matters who are spreading its words in metaverse, these ideas will be successful only if who exposes them is a very experienced Resident, familiar to the vocabulary and habits of other Residents. There’s no reason for a company pays a large amount of money to its marketing agency to make an Island and after this have no support of a heavy user (or team of users) in-world, to make the appropriated buzz around the brand. This comes only with very much time Residence. The Resident initiatives for an ideal or belief are very common too and perfectly understood. The owners of “The Clam and Beam”, in Happy Clam Island, always put ideological/political banners as part of decoration. At the moment, is possible to see in the entrance a banner with the photo of the Democrat candidate for US Presidency, Barack Obama. The

Cover article

image, associating the candidate to the word “change”, was not sponsored, put there by any Democrat committee member or something like that — is just the political expression of a group of Residents that matches with the candidate ideas. Talking of ideas, Silverdrake Sparrow, a respected SL artist, put in her exhibit in Artist’s Park a picture which sale will be 100% donated to Dr. Paul Farmer’s organization, who maintains hospitals in Haiti and Peru for treatment of poor people. Silver says about her initiative: “I am planning to do a series of pictures to benefit charities. I had this one already up at the show and unsold, and I thought, this is something I could do to help.” And talking of arts, a huge polemic recently begun in Second Life hitting full in the first and second lives of an immense Resident community who likes photography and shares their works on Flickr: aspiring for maintain the exhibits of SL 5th birthday in the realms of PG orientation, Linden Lab established a series of rules that end by exclude a diversity of groups from the public art exhibitions. First, nudity was not allowed and, in a text that is almost funny, Linden prohibited to show nipples. This excluded a series of artists that make the

eroticism an essential part of his work, and the Goreans, role players of a RPG with strong emphasis in sex and graphic representations of violence. After that, in a text severely criticized, Linden not allowed the exhibits of photos that figure in the same scene an adult avatar and a kid one, together. In a first moment, is comprehensible that Linden – recently involved in accusations of tolerance with prostitution and pedophilia in the metaverse – wish to protect its image from new accusations. However, examining again the initiative, is very strange that this caused so many worries about the PG content in exhibitions, because is necessary to be an adult to go regularly in Second Life Main Grid. It gave the impression that Linden Lab wish to preserve itself, not the Residents. One of these Residents, who already participated of SL 4th birthday, is Stephen Venkman, who is our guest in Gallery, this month. Stephen chose to form a family in SL, which story is told in the box at the final of this article. He found people who accepted to join him in this option. Since 2005 in SL, he takes beautiful pictures of adult and kids avatars portrayed together, with no sexual connotation at all. In the contrary, these photos glorify the very values that Linden Lab wants to preserve.

Cover article

His photos, as we see in this article, are always playful and shows daily situations of a family, in a context that even the most perverted mind could ever consider differently from the way it’s presented: a family living its life, Stephen Venkman’s family living its life. The result of this controversy was the indignation of SL Residents that are Flickr users, who, leaded by Sue Stonebender, made a organized claim and send notecards to Linden Lab supporting Venkman’s family and, mainly, against censorship in Second Life. This protest (unfortunately ignored by Linden) reunited notecards from more than 80 avatars and was reproduced in Flickrs of those who participated. The frighten thing about it is that a basic right of real life – freedom of expression – was ignored in Second Life and shows a surreal paradox: to preserve a familiar ambience, Linden censored the very figure of… family. BG Magazine added to the protest and gives reason to any people who wants to express him/herself in Second Life – but in conformity with the laws of his/her country. This is not the first protest in Second Life: in 2007, after the terrible accident of the Brazilian TAM’s flight 3054, where 199 people died in July 17th, a group of avatars made a silent vigil

“There be pirates” and “Easter”: both were rejected by Linden this year, for they show children and adult avatars, together in the same image.

in Porto Alegre Island, and distributed mourning t-shirts. They protest against the authorities’ negligence of managing and bad maintenance of the airport of Guarulhos, Sao Paulo. This event was published in many newspapers and this proves that Residents can live in a parallel world, but in no case are disconnected from real life. To live, feel, love or protest, the second existence is a complement of the first one. The people who you are must not diminish behind an avatar, but grows and discover new possibilities. More than a game, Second Life must serve to personal accomplishment and improvement, bringing good things from metaverse to real world and vice-versa.

“Treasure map” was exhibited last year in SL4B. Of course, they didn’t have restrictions in 2007.

Stephen Venkman I came to SL by accident. An online add for SL and I didn’t know what it was. After stumbling in and wondering around for a week, I met a woman I befriended. She showed me around, we started to date and she introduced me to the “family” lifestyle of SL... We were together for one year...before she had to leave SL. We had adopted a couple of kids during this time. Both stayed with me after she left. My son decided he wanted to rp on another SIM and left the family to pursue other choices in SL. My daughter stayed with me. I met Kim shortly after and started to date, and then after a few months she moved into my SL on a permanent basis... our family has grown since. There are adoption agencies that work with kid avatars and adults looking for a family. There are hospitals where you can rp having a baby. You can buy a scripted prim that cries, eats, and sleeps. We now have two daughters and one son. The son is still a prim, we have not pursued an adoption yet because we are so busy in our SL right. Adults decide to be children for many reasons. Some had no childhood growing up, or bad childhood. Some just want to play a child again. No worries... carefree childhood if only for a few hours. My SL family affects my RL in ways that it would a RL family. I make time for them, I worry about them... we communicate via email to see if someone is ok. If someone is taking a vacation for SL, we can say hello. These are people I really care about.

Testimonial

This last deal with SL5B was upsetting due to the fact that my family is a part of who I am here. Nothing is shady. We love each other and our RL’s are just as important to us. We encourage each other to be the best we can be in RL and SL. To have someone say NO to my images was heartbreaking to me. I’ve done nothing wrong, so why not? It is because there are very sick people in the world who have ruined it for others. The bigger issue is to me though censorship of a group of individuals. This year it is child avatars. What will the political climate be asking us to get rid of next year? We should not walk in fear to this pressure, but showcase what it means to have “family” in SL. And that covers a lot of people. Family can mean a lot of things. Hopefully LL learns something from all of this. Communicating with its residents the issues that it faces would be helpful. Respond to those forces outside that want to make this world an evil place with positive images. SL is a place to perhaps have something in RL you didn’t get a chance to have... for me it was children. It’s a place to do things you couldn’t do in RL ... for me it was hang gliding. It’s a place to make things you didn’t have the opportunity to do in RL... to me it is photography. It’s a beautiful place, and the premise of “Your World, Your Imagination” meant a lot to a very diverse group of people. I’d hate to see that stifled out of fear and ignorance.

Alyne Dagger Choices This month, the main thing is find the real into the virtual. That’s why we begin with fantastic replicas of real life monuments that you can see in-world – this is not like to travel to these places, but it works a lot. In the Gallery, we invited Gita Rau and her incredible Flickerite work, full of colors and movement, and Stephen Venkman, a very detailed photographer that was presented to you in the cover article. Here is a little piece of his work that show how unforgivable is the censorship over him that came from SL5B organization.

Virtual Wonders

AD Choices - Unbelieavable Places

For now, is not possible to find all Modern Seven Wonders in Second Life, but there are some quite fantastic replicas in metaverse. I met six virtual wonders, great places to make some travel experience or simply take incredible shots.

AD Choices - Unbelieavable Places

Chichén Itza One of the Modern Seven Wonders in real life, the Aztec pyramid of Chichén Itza deserved an accurate and very well made reproduction in Mexico SL SIM. The place is full of attractions and is beautiful for pictures at day or night – when the pyramid shows its gorgeous particle effects. This is a great place to visit, for sure.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Visit%20Mexico/198/70/39

The Eiffel Tower in Paris 1900 Paris 1900 is magnificent. Built in every detail, it has not only the reproduction of the most famous tower in the world, but other Parisian beauties, as Champs ElisÊes and the Triumph Arc. The Paris 1900 build staff changes the environment according to the European’s seasons and the Tower is the main attraction, for its majesty and beauty. And if you are a daring avatar, test the free parachute jump from the highest peak of the Tower.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Seine/67/254/24

Statue of Liberty There are at least four “New Yorks” in SL and all of them have its Miss Liberty replicas. But I must say that the others didn’t please me – one of them is more like a fat little dwarf. Manhattan’s statue is a beautifully sculpted piece, is placed in a detached island (as the original one), and the rest of the scenery forms the typical frame for the tourist shot that you’ll take.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Statue%20of%20Liberty/95/90/29

Christ, the Redeemer in RJ City Forget that awful monster of Ilha Brasil. RJ City’s Christ, the Redeemer, is the only in SL that resembles the most the original, even though the beauty of the Corcovado Mount is not reproduced yet. Charming like the rest of the SIM, the Christ is place for parties and events and the island is becoming one of the most attractive Brazilian SIMs.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/RJ%20CITY/227/234/90

King’s Valley Pyramids I confess: I didn’t found so much fun in this Egyptian inspired island that reproduces King’s Valley – but you cannot ask too much from a desertic SIM. But I must put in relief the virtuose of the Sphinx’s builders that show even the erosion degree of the ancient construction or the proportional visual correction of the pyramids – the difference of dimensions to get this occurs in real life too. The travel is valuable as curiosity.

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Pharaohs%20Isle/220/115/32

Forbidden City It was not possible to discover if this impressive architectonical complex – owned by the same group that manages Transylvania – has some event agenda or is simply for tourism. The fact is: the details, the virtuose in building makes this an absolute place for travel. And even with huge dimensions, the place has no lag at all.

“To me SL affords an amazing opportunity for the photographer to indulge in many different and unexpected turns of content and style. My first love is classic pin-up style shots but I never know what I will find or come up with for an image. Not only are there wonderful things around almost every corner but even the most mundane SL image has the potential to really come alive with in-world tools and/or postproduction software.

Waiting

“Waiting, was an image i did about a year and a half ago, this is a remake of the original and propelled me into the world of flickr. I had a huge response to that image. No one was really doing those close ups at the time I took that. It’s first appearance was in 2006 on SLprofiles.com Water Dance was a combo of wireframe, regular shot and depth shot. This was taken at Lash’s LaReve Sim.

Water Dance

Kimberly, this was taken during an exploration of the Sim Relic, she was pregnant with our third child Adian. She just looked so beautiful against the dark background, I had to take a shot.”

Profile - Bruno Lisboa Oh

Rezzday: My first avie was born in 02/15/2007. Soon after, BrunoLisboa came.

How did you come here and why? I was in a Congress about Communication and Cyber Culture at PUC University, in Sao Paulo, and there I heard about Second Life (this was 2006). I didn’t have an immediate interest, only in the beginning of 2007 I made my first account and begun to discover all tools. I’m graduated in Communications and I’m photographer too in RL, and at that moment I was asking what it could be the sense of imagery production and what kind of processes would be emerging in the context of digital art. SL was the creative spark to improve personal production, now based in the relation with the metaverse.

What do you like in SL? Sometime I feel like in a civilizing mission, I feel joy working in the development of contents that respond to the common good.

What do you hate most (after lag and the crash thing)? People talk about web 3.0, collaborative environments, web semantics, etc. but I don’t see a denser analysis about the behavior and the situation of Residents. Is very common find in the metaverse Officers receiving less than US$ 0.65 per hour – working for real world companies. This worries me; questions as work and remuneration are still diffuse in metaverso. Private companies arrived here and created a distance, after all they fail in the appropriation of the Residents’ logic. Nor the Residents have the suitable financial support to develop freely their projects. We enter in the second experience based in market interests. Using soccer images – is very hard to kick the ball ahead, the game is stopped, and ball is taken in the feet of few ones.

Talk about your recent projects in SL and what are your expectations. I’m in search for a connection with Brazilian culture and, in Rita Lee’s project, with the music

specifically. Is a trial of a cultural intervention, to stimulate connections between Residents. After knew the researchers of Okatu – Brazilian Art & Culture, my mind become more tuned to the national identity question – for me, today, is one of the challenges. These projects are the stages.

Your favorite places. The straw net at Okatu! It’s a place to think and discuss some issues with interesting people. :D

Favorite people in SL, do you have some? Obviously my friends, there are many awesome people in SL. Today I have some dear people that I found in-world.

Your message to the readers: Show your inventories, find inspiration in our own cultural signs. In September will have much more from Rita Lee in SL, join our group to receive the news, and visit the site! http://www.ritaleeinsl.com/ Kisses to everyone!

foreigners spea First question: How do I say “Good Morning”??

Hey dear noobies! Yes, for me, you You say: “Bom dia” in the morning, “Boa are STILL noobies – in Portuguese tarde” in the afternoon, learning. Why learn Portuguese? and “Boa noite” in the evening! Awell, we are Brazilian and originally BG Magazine was made for Brazilians. This session is just to be in the place of another one, who makes sense just in Portuguese. So, awhile you can't read BG Mag in Portuguese, we are here to provide you with a little survivor kit for when you are TPd for a place full of Brazilians who can't understand what you say.^^ Get ready for lesson #1 - Friendship aboarding when you stop in a Brazilian SIM!

But if you are really clever, learn immediately that “Oi” is pretty easier to remember and can be used when you want!

ese lessons for eakers in Brazillian SIMs

(I know... we need a better title!)

Second question: How do I say “Hello” to a pretty girl?? It depends what you think about her... if you say “Oi Gatinha”, you called her a pretty girl, if you found her a hottie, you say “Oi Gostosa”...

Third question: I am a girl... How to say “Hello” to a hot guy? Brazilian guys like when you take the initiative... if you are hot, you can say any stupid thing and we will say: “sure!” but, for begin, the better words are: “Olá, tudo bem?”*

And if she say: “Cai fora”, better try to say hello to another girl...

*It means Just “Hi, how do you do?” If he answer: “Tô bem, vamos lá em casa?” he is intersted, but wants to take you to his home, what in any place of word means sex immediately!

The boring thing is, they did’nt choose for 2 pregnancies. Mom wanted to have twins and now I share her virtual womb with my dumb sister. Week # 2 Day 08 – Mom was in the clinic and now we live in a little bigger virtual womb – and this is not an advantage when you have a silly and depressed sister that says that she would love to exist in RL. Is it possible to make a half-abortion and get this idiot out??? Day 10 – Mom’s chief told her that it is very boring, when she does her work as party promoter, she is talking about us all the time. She began to cry and Dad supported her. He said the chief is an idiot who does’nt understand that pregnancy make avatars very sensible.

Day 12 – Mom asked Dad: “Am I fat???” Now, every time they want sex, we (my annoying sister and me) have to wait in the inventory, side by side with hairs, shoes and useless freebies that Mom always takes everywhere. My sister made friendship with the pink flamingo couple. Day 13 – Mom and Dad discussed just before the first sonogram, because she wanted a pregnant vampire gown and he didn’t have the slightest idea of where to find it. After a long time, she convinced him to look at picture. Interesting… That baby on the photo has nothing in common with me, nor with the eye crusted one that they say that is my sister.

Week # 5 Day 29 – Mom cried a river during the ultrasonography. Why, God, with so many women in SL, I’ll be the son of the dumbest of them all????? Dad bought cigars for Friday, the birth day. Doctor seems to be as lunatic as Mom – she said that “the babies are well and healthy”. Speak for my sister, Doc, I’m here absolutely against my will! And this crazy environment is unhealthy for my poor little mind! Day 30 – Guess what? Quarrel again. This boring routine of “wear belly - quarrel - take off belly - have sex” is disgusting! They went to a party and Mom worn the big belly. Everyone were caressing it when, suddenly, Dad made a scandal saying he was not taking anymore that speaking belly. Ok, Daddy, but you must remember that you paid for half of this belly and I am not happy of being a son of an unresolved vampire and an emotionally unbalanced party promoter.

Day 32 – I wanna kill my sister. She only wants to talk about the bling hat that she’ll use when she is born. Dad is still disappeared. A friend of him swears he’s offline, but my godmother swears that she saw him with a promoter at a Sexy Life’s adult party. Day 33 – Dad is back. He said my (now) ex-godmother is a shameless mendacious bitch and always flirted with him, hidden in IM. The pink flamingo asked me to join the gorilla avatar and other freebies and make a mass escape. We need guns and an action plan before the birth day!

Week # 6 Day 35 – We got no time to get weapons. I was born. The smoke script of Dad’s cigar is the most pathetic thing I ever seen. Mom cried a river again. Now I know who my sister resembles. Day 36 – Dad got me with him and we are in Midian City. Paradise! Full of foxes!!!! When I grow up, I want to be a RPG Player!!! He’s showing me to everyone, but hates when I say that I need to burp. A friend of Dad said that I am a SL tamagochi – whatever it means. Day 37 – Dad sucks! ¬¬ He throws me in his inventory and went to fight in Toxian City. Mom sends IMs and he ignores her. I think I am a son of a broken home. Dad’s inventory is a big mess! And his flamingos don’t speak my language. Day 39 – Now its official. My parents had dissolved the partnership and Mom is hysterical, sending IMs to Dad asking him to return me to her. He said he doesn’t return, because he paid for half of the “pregnancy thing”. I am just born and I am already a litigation object. World is not a good place.

Day 41 – After being bombed by an endless series of IMs from Mom, Dad dropped me in a no-return Sim and said that he’ll never ever marry and have a child in SL again. I think he’ll say to Mom that he deleted me. Is not fair with her, but that’s the way I like it: FREEEEDOMMMMMM!!!!! Now, I’ll fill this place with lots of lag, for fun! I’m lucky of having an asshole father that has no balls to delete me! XD Day 42 – Nobody found me till now, and that’s good! While nobody gets me, I make plans to dominate Second Life. You will hear from me, Voodoo Kid, the baby that will rule the world!!!!

Alyne Dagger

Linden 8-D Ten reasons to LOVE LUCRECIA SLADE

1

. Because she’s the most indicated person to form an opinion about fashion and décor that we know. And you can expect sincerity: she’ll never tell you that you are gorgeous with those ridiculous badly edited prim clothes full of blings!

2

. Because she has a GORGEOUS avatar – even not being a tall avatar, or a turbo Barbie doll or a big melon butt chick one.

3.

. Because who heard her voice never forget: it’s sexy, profound, seductive... till she laughs. Her laugh is more scandalous than a couple of parrots.

4

. Because she’s a SICKENING SNOB when talking to invasive, boring, disgusting and uncivilized people. In the other hand, when nobody is watching, she’s very kind and friendly to newbies and makes company to ashamed people who make camp (after one year in SL) hidden from people around. XD

5

. Because she helps me to mock my friend LPViper Watanabe, mocks him when I’m not online, and laughs when I mock him. Hear Viper saying “I’m lost” in her presence is priceless….

6

. Because she speaks English very well and make all the translation of the mag while I sit and clap hands and Fast waits to make the revision. XD

7

. Because she looks at me and say “ALYNE, LESS!” when I began the Drama Queen play. (Me? I do this?? Naaaaaahhhhh)

8

. Because she and markk Back make the kind of couple that makes us believe that love affairs can become a solid marriage.

9

. Because she’s exactly half of this mag, the stylish and chic half that makes a counterpoint to the unquiet and curious half. She’s unquiet and curious too, but makes this in a much more reserved way.

10.

Because in 8th June that maniac completed ONE YEAR in SL, and as she made to me an opening editorial with the greetings of many friends of us, I needed to consider something different like… my own opinion. Lu, I LOVE you (but the truck driver is you still, ok?).

Alyne Dagger

LAG 8-\ The young lady below was at SL5B exhibition using the tag “Impossible stuff”. A bitten candy for who guess what she is talking about….

Declaring love is ok, love is really a beautiful thing. But put the girlfriend’s photo in a badly made tattoo is stupid! Look how the face of the poor girl became distorted by his shape! And using with another tattoo set gets the thing worst.

Many people don’t give a damn for the shape, thinking that anything goes fine. Here, two examples that proves that the thing is not so simple. The thin one on the left seems more a squeezed toothpaste with almost no legs. And the tattooed guy on the right wanted to be big in Japan and only got to be fat and with a big butt. I will not talk about the ridiculous little head that crowns the effort to destroy his shape.

Linden Lab advises: you’ll never know when you accept a TP and fall with your melons in the face of someone that is in Away mode.

When you go to buy dance animations, please, don’t use that wonderful RPG costume. You can finish the day playing the Macarena dance dressed as a vampire!
