Lack of action to address an outdated and costly business rates system is holding businesses back, UKHospitality Scotland said today.

Responding to the Ministerial Statement on non-domestic rates, UKHospitality Scotland Executive Director Leon Thompson said: “The current system of business rates is holding our businesses back, with the punitive rates they pay preventing investment. It’s clear a new approach is needed if we are to achieve the Barclay Review’s aim of a business rates system that supports and encourages longterm investment.

“We’re hearing from hospitality businesses that their rateable values have increased by up to 50%, which makes the report from the Chief Statistician today, that rateable values are decreasing, surprising. The report does not reflect the reality on the ground, as felt by many of our businesses.

“The New Deal for Business Group and details of a subgroup to look at non-domestic rates is welcome news. There is much to do to improve the system and UKHospitality Scotland looks forward to engaging with the Business Group and the sub-group on this issue.”

We also have a host of partners for this year with our headline partner the fantastic Au Vodka. We are very proud to be working closely with Charlie, Alasdair Ben and the wider team on supporting the brand as they engage the industry in Scotland.

Not just that but by all accounts the team and brand LOVE a party so what better than to join forces with THE party of the year for the hospitality industry. We look forward to welcoming & entertaining you all on the night.

Inverness Students Celebrate Success At Learning For Life Graduation

Six students have celebrated their graduation from Diageo’s Learning for Life programme in a special ceremony hosted at The Whitehouse to toast their success.

The students have completed the sixweek bartending and hospitality course which offers young people entry level training in bartending and hospitality, including work experience in local pubs, bars and restaurants.

All participants of this cohort have been offered the opportunity to interview for Cru Holdings, a leading hospitality and travel company in the Highlands of Scotland. Two participants from the course have already secured full time roles with the company.
