A Beloved Father of OLG Church Laid to Rest By Marisa Munoz A well-known figure who served at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, Rev. James F. Maloney C.M.F passed away on November 15, 2011 after a long battle with illness. Father Maloney was a priest which many loved and recognized as a loving Father of the community and the church’s parishioners. Fr. Maloney began his profession as a Claretian Missionary in 1952, at the age of 19, to perpetual profession in 1955. He then went on to become an ordained priest on June 11, 1960. He also served as editor of Claretian Publications and Novena Director for the National Shrine of St. Jude located at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church after ordainment until 1970. Rumors of a new school on the Southeast Side have been swirling the area for years. Now, with plans in place and even a site in mind, the Southeast Area Elementary School will soon be moving forward in development. Expecting to serve up to 1,200 students, ranging from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, the three-story building, proposed to be at 105th and Indianapolis Blvd., will offer science, computer, music and art classrooms. It will include a library, gymnasium and dining facility as well as accommodating up to 74 faculty and staff members. With student’s age population continuing to grow, the school will serve the surrounding residential area as well as students from nearby schools that are at or exceeding student capacity. It will be an all-new school complete with new boundaries that will be constructed by the ward. The building is to be designed to achieve “Silver” level certification under the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. The projected site currently has eight buildings occupied by small businesses.

Southeast Area Elementary School to become Reality CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE These businesses will eventually close and the existing buildings will be leveled in order to accommodate the new elementary school development. “There are eight properties total,” said 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope. “The first ones are already under title and [the city] is demolishing them. We’re going through the legal process of acquiring all these and through the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) program we are able to help fund this project.” Plans that began during the Richard M. Daley administration, the Public Building Commission of Chicago took steps to acquire the property at 105th and Indianapolis Blvd. on behalf of Chicago Public Schools. “We have a commitment to education in the City of Chicago, and that commitment includes the construction of new schools,” said Mayor Daley in a press release from the Public Building Commission of Chicago. “We are investing in our children by providing new and modern facilities across the city. New schools create community anchors and instill community pride, which will serve generations to come.” The school’s construction, after acquiring all properties, environmental work is complete and all plans are approved, should take approximately 18 months. Being built on such a busy street, such as Indianapolis Blvd., some may also wonder how safe this will be for their children. A thorough study was done by Kenig, Lindgren, O’Hara, Aboona, Inc. (KLOA, Inc.) on the site to determine the existing traffic and pedestrian conditions. Entrance to the school would also be limited to the west side of the facility, which would prevent children from even coming into contact with the busy Indianapolis Blvd.

There’s also been some concern that new institution would be a charter school. Alderman Pope has been very clear about making it a community school. “Charter schools are interesting but as we’re spending millions and millions of dollars I’ve committed that this will be a community school and not a selective school where kids can come in from any neighborhood.” Said Alderman Pope. “We want this to serve the kids who are in the neighborhood. We want our kids to have the opportunity to experience the very best facilities.” Look for more details as they become available on the new Southeast Area Elementary School.

A Beloved Father of OLG Church Laid to Rest CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE He then traveled to Amarillo, Texas where he served as an associate pastor of St. Joseph Parish. Two years later Father returned to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and served as associate pastor and education director for the parish elementary school for two years. In 1974 he was elected as Provincial Superior of the Eastern Province, and remained until 1979. After his term was completed, Fr. Maloney traveled to Rome, Italy and served as Consultor for the Claretian General Government from 1979-1985. After his stay in Rome, he returned back to Our Lady of Guadalupe Church to server as pastor in 1986. Between 1993 and 1996, he served the Hispanic community as a pastor at La Asuncion Church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. It was during this time in 1996, he became ill which required him to take a momentary sick leave. In 1997, shortly after his sick leave Fr. Maloney came back to serve as pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, until his retirement in 2005. He then went on to reside in and serve the retirement community of Marian Village in Homer Glen, IL. Our Lady of Guadalupe is known as Chicago’s first Mexican Church. The parish began when Fr. William Kane S.J began serving the religious needs of the Mexicans of the South Chicago area in 1923. Father John Maiztegui, a Claretian priest was named pastor in 1924, which began a long history of Claretian priests who served the church. Fr. Maloney took part in a documentary titled, “The Voices of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which was featured on WTTW Channel 11. The documentary details the history of the church and the people of the community. Fr. Maloney along with various other members of the community and parish were featured in the documentary. Parishioners of OLG church and beyond came to show their last respects to Fr. Maloney on November 19, 2011. He was then laid to rest at Interment Queen of Heaven Cemetery Hillside, IL. Fr. Maloney will remain in the hearts of those who knew him and the lives he touched throughout his life, as he was appreciated and loved by many members of the community.

MANN PARK FALL VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE

Mann Park in Hegewisch is in full swing with its Adult Co - Rec and Womens’ Fall Volleyball leagues. Tuesday, November 8th, Co - rec team Green Olive Renegades went up against Los Flamas Blanlos. Before the games started, Green Olive Renegades team captain, Delia Payne spoke about the sponsor to the team and new owner to the Green Olive in Hegewisch, Hank Smith. Who was also in attendance in support of his team. Payne’s teammates include Jade Vega, Jacquelyn Scruggs, Nikki Serrano, Brenda Avila and Danielle Flores. They have been playing volleyball for four years together and always participate at Mann Park during the summer and fall seasons. These veteran volleyball players are now joined by newcomers Johnna Brajkovich, Margarito Zuniga, Paula Margarito, Stephanie Rodriguez and Anthony Gomez who are new to the team but not to the game. Gomez was a coach for the Marsh Elementary School girls’ volleyball team last year and led his team with a superior record. These adult teams play for fun, but the loud grunts as they hit the ball, low digs on their knees and fast spikes landing on opposite ends of the court show just how serious these teams can be. Wednesday evenings the Womens’ volleyball teams take the court with most of the same players who are on the Co rec volleyball teams, which play every Tuesday night. Nov. 8th had eight teams playing, Los Flamas Blanlos played three games against the Green Olive Renegades with scores of 25-20, 19-25and 15-9. Just Jim’s defeated the 3Vs in two games scoring 25-19 and 25-21. Auto Tech won vs. Center Slammers with scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 15-7. High Haters and Town Drunks went at it in two games scoring 25-23 and 25-17, giving High Haters the win. Games will continue weekly until late January 2012 when they start playoffs. More teams will be featured in the upcoming editions. Come out on Tuesday and Wednesday nights to support your favorite teams.
