Limiting landfill expansion has been an issue that has weighed heavily on not only residents but also environmental leaders and businesses on the Southeast Side of Chicago. In 2005 there was only one landfill operating in the City of Chicago. CID, owned by Waste Management and is located at 137th and the Bishop Ford expressway, had an estimated 225 acres of land which served as a depository. Some of the concerns towards the landfill were the negative health risks that could arise such as cancer, but also the pollutants that

could potentially affect our water supply which include the Calumet River and Lake Michigan and the odor that comes with the landfill. The area Aldermen and State of Illinois Representatives, and the Mayor of Chicago have been working together to keep a moratorium in place that would halt any expansion or new growth for an approximately 27 year period of time. Having a moratorium in place would stop any expansion or new building of landfills. Two weeks ago, the Illinois State Senate Executive Committee supported the prohibition of such landfills throughout the region. The bill, HB 3881, has protected the Lake Calumet region from any further growth or

expansion of landfills. Despite the growing concerns about HB 3881 sidestepping local authority, several members of the House are disappointed with the bill. With a 62-49 count, the bill is upheld and heading to Governor Pat Quinn for his signature. Keeping the community safe and clean has been a priority of Alderman John A. Pope of the 10th ward, with the backing of several other Aldermen and community activists. Also contributing to stopping legislation from expanding the landfills, State Rep. Marcus Evans (D-Chicago), has fought to keep his constituents from hazardous waste effects.

CID has reached its capacity and was forced to close due to the new and more restrictive moratorium in place. They are required by IEPA to monitor ground water, repair any erosion, and maintain vegetation and methane gas produced by the landfill. Inspections are done periodically by the City and IEPA. With millions of dollars in taxpayer’s money, public agencies have invested in acquiring and restoring properties in the Calumet Area. Additional funding has been committed for on-going projects to develop the Calumet Open Space Reserve and the Millennium Reserve along with other environmental programs. Economic

growth in the Calumet area in the form of new business and infrastructure is transpiring right before our eyes and to stop the growth of a pollutant such as a landfill is only promising a brighter future of a clean environment. The City of Chicago, under the leadership of Mayor Emanuel, has expanded the Blue Cart recycling program to include all of Chicago by the end of next year. Continued efforts by Mayor Emanuel in conjunction with Alderman Pope, in keeping our communities clean and revitalizing every effort to expand and bring new business to Chicago has been a priority. In maintaining a moratorium on the landfill is a positive move in keeping the City clean.

That project will be paid for by the savings realized form the retrofittings, which are expected to top $25 million a year. The Chicago Infrastructure Trust passed the City Council in April by a vote of 41-7, after being introduced to Chicagoans on March 1 in a joint event between Mayor Emanuel and President Clinton.

Not a prequel to Alien... By Brian Grabinski

Bgrabinski@onwnews.com

Prometheus (2012) R 124 min - Action | Horror | Sci-Fi - 8 June 2012 (USA) Director: Ridley Scott Writers: Jon Spaihts, Damon Lindelof Stars: Noomi Rapace, Logan Marshall-Green and Michael Fassbender SYNOPSIS: A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

REVIEW:

Anyone who’s heard anything about this film will know that if NOT a prequel to Ridley Scott’s - 1979 science fiction horror Alien, it is however set in the same universe and involves events some time before the crew of the Nostromo first encountered the classic

xenomorphs. Elements from the original Alien film are scattered throughout, but you don’t need to recognize them to enjoy this as a work in its own right. Anyone expecting answers to questions arriving from its predecessor will have to wait; Ridley says there will have to be at least two more films to fill the gap between the end of this film and the start of Alien is taken on as its own entity. Prometheus is certainly an epic thrill-ride. Ridley Scott is a veteran of the genre so he knows how to generate tension and build an atmosphere, but while he does this effectively, he also deflates the mood with some of the worst clichés in the universe. How Prometheus will eventually fit into the franchise can’t be judged yet, as we don’t know whether the dots will ever be joined, but as a science fiction thriller in its own right, this film is adequate and visually attractive, exciting and thought-provoking, as it tackles the big questions of the origins of mankind and the nature of humanity, alongside chilling and shocking alien encounters. Prometheus is better than average - but for a film of this caliber, it’s just not enough. It’s like flying across the universe for two years to discover the origins of mankind and not getting all of the answer you had been hoping for. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one an 9. My 2¢ -B

ning score of 15-7. With the three game winning streak it’s going to be exciting to watch them play against our East Side League team from Rowan Park, coached by Froilan Nunez, on Thursday, June 14th at Mann Park. With any rivalry, such as the Windy City Classic of the Cubs vs. White Sox, this should also be a good game as Synergy Orange is known in the Hegewisch/Mann Park area as one of three traveling teams while Chicago East Side is known to represent the East Side/Rowan Park area. What a game it will be! Synergy Orange has outstanding pitching with Danielle Palomino, Maya Rodriguez and Kayla Castaneda. They are also

playing tournaments against the south suburbs with the first being the Glen Ellen Invitational the weekend of June 15-17. Their Lemont Metro tournament play will take place July 12 – 15. They hope to keep doing well and end the season going to the Nationals in Columbus, Wisconsin during the first week of August. For the Nationals trip, the Synergy girls are raising money from now until the end of July with a variety of fundraisers. The Hegewisch Synergy girls will be out and about so, please support their cause as their schedule for regular season home games will be played at Mann Park June 14, 21, 22, 30 and July 5, 9 and 19. All home games begin at 6 p.m.

Cowie had the children laughing loudly as he went on about a werewolf in his fantasy book titled Werewoof and joked about characters in his other books. He made his point to the kids that writing can be fun. Students had plenty of questions for him about his wacky adventures in writing young adult books. Each Bright student in 5th through 8th grade received a signed copy of Werewoof which many of them began to read right away.

Every year students learn to become better writers in school. Kicking off the Young Authors writing for Bright School was a special treat author visit to share knowledge of writing books. Bright School’s principal, Millicent Clyburn, had Darryl Harvey visit to speak with the primary children about becoming an author. Darryl Harvey was born and raised on Chicago’s Westside and became interested in poetry early on in his life and later published books for children. Harvey’s visit focused on bringing to life his Sunflower Series of books that aim to promote self-esteem, education, sharing and positive family relationships. Harvey noticed growing up how children needed to have books that made them feel good about themselves starting at an early age. His first book in the series is titled I Can Do Anything, which the kindergartners at Bright School enjoyed very much. Harvey also read his other books and signed a copy for each student to keep and take home to read again and again.

students that included his knowledge about characters, tense, researching and adding humor in any genre. Many of his books are aimed at adults but he has many for young adults that use humor to engage his audience. Fifth graders at Bright School were treated to his amusing lessons on how to research for character writing.

As students reflect on the authors that visited Bright School, the teachers feel confident the children will take what they learned and apply the skills to writing their own books. Writing a book can be a lot of hard work but Bright students say they can do it. They are going to make writing fun!

The older students at Bright School also had their own author visit. Norm Cowie brought insight in writing books to
