City Council Resolution Supports State Legislative Measure Banning Landfills

By Sam Gomez

Sgomez@onwnews.com

Environmental group leaders rally to limit landfill expansion Last week, the Illinois State Senate Executive Committee unanimously supported legislation to prohibit new or expanded landfills within Cook County and promote the preservation and restoration of unique environmental areas. The bill, HB 3881, was introduced by State Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) and supported by dozens of community and environmental groups to preserve Chicago’s current 20-year landfill moratorium. The current moratorium, as introduced by 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope, was passed unanimously by the city council

in 2005. This legislation has, thus far, protected the Lake Calumet region from further landfilling and prohibits new or expanded landfills prior to February 1, 2025. “From the time I first came into office, I have made the landfill issue my priority”, said Alderman John A. Pope. “My office and countless others (from the community) came together to put an end to landfills and the laborious task of renewing the moratorium every 2 years.” In addition, the Chicago City Council introduced a resolution with 31 aldermen signing on to support HB 3881. The City of Chicago has been trying to block an attempt by landfill owner Land and Lakes, Inc. to disconnect 87 acres from Chicago and attach to suburban Dolton, which would allow them to expand its landfill – which in fact is scheduled to close by 2013.

East Side & Hegewisch Softball begins!!

Softball on the East Side and Hegewisch has been under way since last week. The East Side League had their fun filled opening day with weather in the upper 70s at Rowan Park. The tee-ball division and the minor division all had games that day as well. Jesus Ramirez, emcee and President of the League, was also there to welcome all teams and players. The tee ball division includes the Cheetahs, Panthers, Cougars, Bengals, Jaguars, Pumas and Lions. The minor division has the Hawks

and Ravens. With the Major division having the East Side teams Red & White, the league plays games in South Holland, Whiting and Calumet City. The East Side League has been in effect for 15 years and as the years go on, the league seems to be changing for the better with Ramirez at the helm and Rich Ybarra as its Vice President. They both continue to take the league to the next level with their teams. As the kids were prepared to play, the parents were ready to support their appropriate teams.

Nearly any day of the week at 5:30pm, a game is bound to be taking place. So, come out and support the teams. On May 10th, Hegewisch League had their 1st game at Mann Park with the Bullseyes and Starburts playing and the Red Hots vs Turtles in which the Red Hots lost by 1 run. The Hegewish Minor League consists of 6 minor league teams, Bullseyes, Starbursts, Turtles, Red Hots, Tootsie Rolls and the Razzles. On May 14th the Red Hots came away with a win vs the Razzles, as well as the Starbursts

defeating the Tootsie Rolls. Games at Mann Park also take place at 5:30pm on weekdays and 11am on Saturdays. The remaining games to be played are May 23rd, 29th, 30th, 31st, June 2nd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 13th thru 16th, 18th thru 23rd, and 25th thru 28th. Plenty of games to be played and enjoyed at either park so come out and enjoy some softball, support the neighborhood kids as well at the coaches who give their time and energy.

no LANDFILL CONTINUED FROM FRONT PAGE “A Cook County landfill ban is a critical first step toward continuing to revitalize this thriving community,” said Tom Shepherd, member of the Southeast Environmental Task Force. “Of all the commercial and industrial investments being made in the southeast side and south suburban region, a landfill proposed between 138th Street and the Calumet River poses the greatest risks to our environment, our physical health and the future of our community by undoing years of environmental progress.” Sen. Harmon’s legislation is supported by dozens of community and environmental groups including the Illinois Sierra Club, the Illinois Environmental Council, and the Environmental Law and Policy Center. The measure which will prevent new or expanded landfills in Chicago and Cook County is being fiercely opposed by the waste industry. “The state has 40 active landfills and 6 additional in different phases of expansion, providing sufficient capacity to accommodate the state’s waste for decades,” said Jennifer Walling, Executive Director of the Illinois Environmental

Council. “When you consider the expansion of recycling and composting programs, the logic of landfills in urban areas contradicts those efforts.” Public agencies have invested millions of tax payer dollars in acquiring and restoring properties in the Calumet area. Additional funding is committed or planned for on-going efforts to develop the Calumet Open Space Reserve and Millennium Reserve, often in conjunction with other large-scale environmental programs such as the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. “Without a county wide landfill ban, waste companies will once again be able to pursue landfills anywhere in Cook County including areas that have been designated for environmental restoration – such as the Lake Calumet region,” added Rich Melendrez, South Chicago Neighborhood House. “Without the moratorium the southeast side would get the garbage once again -- as it did for so many years.” For more information or to take action please visit http://www. nochicagolandfills.com/ or follow on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/ NoChicagoLandfills

helped open my eyes to making sustainable change and practices possible.” Colón’s Peace Corps service will wrap up this fall, and he says that it has been rewarding thus far. He is glad to have an opportunity to share his stories of living and working abroad, recognizing that Peace Corps volunteers should strive to bring their knowledge and understanding of new cultures back home to their communities. This helps Peace Corps achieve and carry out the essential third goal of the agency – to strengthen Americans’ understanding about the world and its vast peoples and cultures. As for Colón’s future plans, he hopes to use his new skills to continue working with youth on environmental issues, right here in Chicago. “I worked with the U.S. Forest Service in Milwaukee before joining Peace Corps,” he says, “and it would be great to work with them again, such as part of their Urban Connections program, connecting urban youth in Chicago with natural spaces. I really would like to take the skills I’ve learned during my service in community involvement, consensus building and engaged activism to the youth from my neighborhood. As one of the Peace Corps mottos says, I want to ‘think global, act local.”

From May 10 - 23, Colón will spend time with family and friends and share his Peace Corps experiences of adapting to a new culture, assisting a community in need and serving as an international ambassador for the United States. On May 10th, at the Old Town School of Folk Music on Lincoln Ave., Colón spoke at a special Peace Corps event to inspire a whole host of applicants who are preparing for their future Peace Corps assignments. Seton Academy Volleyball Championships

By Juan and Elizabeth Quintana jquintana@onwnews.com

Volleyball season has officially come to an end on the East Side in the Seton Academy league with Marsh 5th & 6th grade team finishing first in the league and in tournament. Our Lady of Guadalupe finished up 2nd followed by Burnham School 3rd and St. Agnes 4th. Lincoln and Sandridge came up 5th and 6th respectively. The 7th and 8th grade teams that participated in the league this year were Christ Our Savior, St. Agnes (7th Grade) and (8th Grade) Burnham, Sandridge, St. Casmir, Marsh and OLG. Laura and Elena Carrillo coordinated the league with the help from Seton Athletic Director, Deon, at

Seton Academy in the suburbs of South Holland, IL. As Marsh and OLG battled for 1st and 2nd place finishes, Burnham and St. Agnes had one of their better games with Burnham coming out on top. This league took place after the Calumet Park and Mann Park Leagues finished up. The coordinators want more schools in the area to participate next year and have all the leagues in the area grow. All of the top four teams received trophies for the league and tournament in both the 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade leagues. In the latter bracket OLG came out on top and Marsh finished 4th. All the teams did excellent this year and showed lots of improvement. Congratulations to all that participated.
